Hydrogen is a potential key component of a carbon-neutral energy carrier and an input to marine industrial processes. This study examines the consequences of coupled hydrogen release and marine environmental factors during floating photovoltaic hydrogen production (FPHP) system failures. A validated three-dimensional numerical model of FPHP comprehensively characterizes hydrogen leakage dynamics under varied rupture diameters (25, 50, 100 mm), transient release duration, dispersion patterns, and wind intensity effects (0–20 m/s sea-level velocities) on hydrogen–air vapor clouds. FLACS-generated data establish the concentration–dispersion distance relationship, with numerical validation confirming predictive accuracy for hydrogen storage tank failures. The results indicate that the wind velocity and rupture size significantly influence the explosion risk; 100 mm ruptures elevate the explosion risk, producing vapor clouds that are 40–65% larger than 25 mm and 50 mm cases. Meanwhile, increased wind velocities (>10 m/s) accelerate hydrogen dilution, reducing the high-concentration cloud volume by 70–84%. Hydrogen jet orientation governs the spatial overpressure distribution in unconfined spaces, leading to considerable shockwave consequence variability. Photovoltaic modules and inverters of FPHP demonstrate maximum vulnerability to overpressure effects; these key findings can be used in the design of offshore platform safety. This study reveals fundamental accident characteristics for FPHP reliability assessment and provides critical insights for safety reinforcement strategies in maritime hydrogen applications. Underwater jet scouring is an efficient, flexible underwater dredging technique, yet its complex physical mechanisms and dynamic evolution hinder dredging effectiveness evaluation. Existing studies mostly use empirical formulas and neglect the sediment properties’ influence on scour holes. This study integrates numerical simulation, theoretical derivation, and sediment characteristics to develop a universal model for efficiently predicting underwater jet scour hole morphology, overcoming existing models’ limitations of over-simplifying complex physics and insufficient experimental data alignment. Using CFD–DEM coupling to simulate scouring, it correlates key physical parameters (average/maximum shear rate, average/maximum shear velocity) with jet characteristics (nozzle diameter, velocity, distance) via theoretical derivation and simplifications, validated using multi-condition simulation data. Comparative analysis shows maximum relative errors of 13% for depth and 7% for width, confirming the engineering applicability in scour hole prediction. Full article

This study examines the capabilities and optimisation of electrochemical jet machining (ECJM), a component of the electrochemical machining (ECM) production chain. A localised electrolyte jet helps remove material from selective areas; it is a suitable process for contoured parts and hard-to-machine material without inflicting thermal or mechanical stresses. In this regard, the study incorporates details of an experimental layout and variation in parameters in terms of voltage, electrolyte concentration, and jet velocity. The most striking findings indicate that the material removal rate and surface quality are susceptible to parameters such as applied voltage and stand-off distance, and electrolyte concentration and jet velocity (via electrolyte supply rate) fixed. Higher voltages and fixed electrolyte concentrations give higher removal rates, though this might impair the surface finish, thereby requiring a trade-off at best. These results provide insights into optimising process parameters for enhanced precision and efficiency in ECJM. Future research could focus on advanced electrolytes and improving scalability for industrial applications. Full article

The selection of process parameters for an ultra-high-pressure water jet directly affects the adhesion ability of the subsequent coating on the ship’s surface. This study investigates the effect of jet pressure, standoff distance, and nozzle traverse speed on the surface roughness of grade-A marine steel, aiming to optimize the process parameters and improve the quality of surface treatment. Based on single-factor experiments and orthogonal experiments, a three-factor, three-level experimental design was employed, considering jet pressure, standoff distance, and nozzle traverse speed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a confocal microscope were used to analyze the surface morphology and roughness of grade-A marine steel. The experimental results proved that surface roughness exhibited a nonlinear relationship with jet pressure, initially increasing and then decreasing as pressure rose. Conversely, surface roughness showed negative correlations with both standoff distance and nozzle traverse speed, progressively decreasing with increases in these parameters. Through hierarchical analysis, the effect hierarchy of the three factors on surface roughness was determined as follows: jet pressure > standoff distance > nozzle traverse speed. Parametric optimization revealed that a jet pressure of 150 MPa, a standoff distance of 25 mm, and a nozzle traverse speed of 180 mm/min collectively yielded a peak surface roughness of 62.549 μm. This value aligns with the pre-coating surface preparation standards for grade-A marine steel substrates, ensuring optimal adhesion for subsequent anti-corrosion treatments. Full article

Under the trend of lightweight and high-efficiency development in industrial equipment, precise regulation of lubrication in gear reducers is a key breakthrough for enhancing transmission system efficiency and reliability. This study establishes a three-dimensional numerical model for high-speed gear jet lubrication using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and dynamic mesh technology. By implementing the volume of fluid (VOF) multiphase flow model and the standard k-ω turbulence model, the study simulates the dynamic distribution of lubricant in gear meshing zones and analyzes critical parameters such as the oil volume fraction, eddy viscosity, and turbulent kinetic energy. The results show that reducing the oil injection distance significantly enhances lubricant coverage and continuity: as the injection distance increases from 4.8 mm to 24 mm, the lubricant shifts from discrete droplets to a dense wedge-shaped film, mitigating lubrication failure risks from secondary atomization and energy loss. The optimized injection distance also improves the spatial stability of eddy viscosity and suppresses excessive dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy, enhancing both the shear-load capacity and thermal management. Dynamic data from monitoring point P show that reducing the injection distance stabilizes lubricant velocity and promotes more consistent oil film formation and heat transfer. Through multiphysics simulations and parametric analysis, this study elucidates the interaction between geometric parameters and hydrodynamic behaviors in jet lubrication systems. The findings provide quantitative evaluation methods for structural optimization and energy control in gear lubrication systems, offering theoretical insights for thermal management and reliability enhancement in high-speed transmission. These results contribute to the lightweight design and sustainable development of industrial equipment. Full article

CO2 displacement is a key technique that was examined through numerical methods in a 3D Hele–Shaw cell, with CO2 as the displacing phase and shear-thinning fluids as the displaced phase. Without interfacial tension effects, the displacement shows branching patterns forming two vertically symmetric fingers, regardless of whether the displacing fluid is air or CO2. Under CO2 displacement, viscous fingering propagates farther and achieves higher displacement efficiency than air. Compared with air displacement, the finger advancing distance increases by 0.0035 m, and the displacement efficiency is 15.2% higher than that of air displacement. Shear-thinning behavior significantly influences the process; stronger shear thinning enhances interfacial stability and suppresses fingering. As the power-law index n increases (reducing shear thinning), the fingering length extends. Variations in interfacial tension reveal it notably affects fingering initiation and velocity in CO2 displacement of non-Newtonian fluids, but has a weaker impact on fingering formation. Interfacial tension suppresses short-wavelength perturbations, critical to interface stability, jet breakup, and flows, informing applications like foam-assisted oil recovery and microfluidics. Pressure relief devices are critical for the safe release of pressurized hydrogen. To address the risk of spontaneous ignition during a high-pressure release, three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations are systematically conducted to investigate the effects of burst conditions on spontaneous ignition behavior. Eight simulation cases are considered, involving two opening processes (instantaneous and 10-step-like), three burst disk shapes (flat, conventional domed, and reverse domed), and five opening ratios (1, 0.8, 0.6, 0.4, and 0.2). The 10-step-like opening enhances jet turbulence and promotes flame merging between the boundary layer and jet front, intensifying combustion. Domed structures cause a high-velocity region behind the leading shock wave, altering jet front evolution. Compared with reverse-domed disks, flat and conventional domed disks generate stronger vortices and a larger shock-heated area, resulting in more severe combustion and elevated fire risk. As the opening ratio decreases, both shock wave strength and propagation velocity drop significantly, and spontaneous ignition does not occur. The opening ratio has minimal influence on the distance traveled by shock-induced heating. These findings offer meaningful guidance for the design and manufacture of pressure relief devices for the safe emergency release of hydrogen. Full article

The dramatic increase in domestic and industrial waste over recent centuries has significantly polluted water bodies, threatening aquatic life and human activities such as drinking, recreation, and commerce. Understanding pollutant dispersion is essential for designing effective waste management systems, employing both experimental and computational techniques. Among Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques, the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) has emerged as a novel approach based on a discretized Boltzmann equation. The versatility and parallelization capability of this method makes it particularly attractive for fluid dynamics simulations using high-performance computing. Motivated by its successful application across various scientific disciplines, this study explores the potential of LBM to model pollutant mixing and dilution from outfalls into surface water bodies, focusing specifically on vertical dense jets in crossflow (JICF), a key scenario for the diffusion of brine from desalination plants. A full-LBM scheme is employed to model both the hydrodynamics and the transport of the saline concentration field, and Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are employed in the framework of LBM to reduce computational costs typically associated with turbulence modeling, together with a recursive regularization procedure for the collision operator to achieve greater stability. Several key aspects of vertical dense JICF are considered. The simulations successfully capture general flow characteristics corresponding to jets with varying crossflow parameter urF and most of the typical vortical structures associated with JICF. Relevant quantities such as the terminal rise height, the impact distance, the dilution at the terminal rise height, and the dilution at the impact point are compared with experimental results and semi-empirical relations. The results show a systematic underestimation of these quantities, but the key trends are successfully captured, highlighting LBM’s promise as a tool for simulating wastewater dispersion in aquatic environments. Polybenzimidazole (PBI), a high-performance polymer known for its exceptional thermal stability and chemical resistance, was processed by solution electrospinning to manufacture fibrous non-woven membranes. The process was repeated under different conditions by adjusting four main settings: the polymer solution concentration, the flow rate, the voltage applied between the needle and the collector, and the separating distance. To clarify the interplay between process parameters and material properties, a Design of Experiment (DOE) approach was used to systematically analyze the effects of said parameters on microstructural properties, including fiber diameter, porosity, and air permeability, pointing out that the increase in viscosity improves fiber uniformity, while optimizing the applied voltage and the needle–collector distance enhances jet stability and solvent evaporation, crucial for defect-free fibrous microstructures. Post-processing via calendering further refined the membrane texture and properties, for example by reducing porosity and air permeability without significantly altering the fibrous morphology, particularly at low lamination ratios. Thermal and mechanical evaluations highlighted that the obtained electrospun PBI membranes exhibited enhanced flexibility, but lower tensile strength compared to cast films due to the underlying open pore microstructure. This integrated approach—combining experimental characterization, DOE-guided optimization, and post-processing via calendering—provides a systematic framework for tailoring PBI membranes for specific applications, such as filtration, fuel cells, and molecular sieving. The findings highlight the potential of PBI-based electrospun membranes as versatile materials, offering high thermal stability, chemical resistance, and tunable properties, thereby establishing a foundation for further innovation in advanced polymeric membrane design and applications for energy and sustainability. Channel fire poses a great threat to personnel safety and structural strength, in which the temperature profile is worthy of attention. In this paper, the longitudinal temperature profile of a ceiling jet induced by a wall-attached fire with different channel slopes was experimentally investigated using a 1:8 reduced-scale channel. The results show the following: (1) For channel fire with a horizontal ceiling, the influence of the burner aspect ratio and source-ceiling height on the temperature profile is monotonous in the cases considered in this work. With a larger burner aspect ratio and larger source-ceiling distance, more ambient air could be entrained; hence, the longitudinal temperature under the ceiling decays faster. (2) For channel fire with an inclined ceiling, when the burner aspect ratio and source-ceiling distance remain constant, the asymmetric entrainment induced by the flame under larger channel slope leads to more hot smoke being transported upstream. Consequently, the temperature profile is not symmetric, with higher temperatures upstream and lower temperatures downstream. (3) Combining the influence of the burner aspect ratios, source-ceiling distance, and burner aspect ratio, the characteristic length scale was modified. Based on this, a model describing the ceiling temperature profile was proposed and then verified with previous data. Full article

Magnetic pulse welding (MPW) is a promising solid-state joining process that utilizes electromagnetic forces to create high-speed, impact-like collisions between two metal components. This welding technique is widely known for its ability to join dissimilar metals, including aluminum, steel, and copper, without the need for additional filler materials or fluxes. MPW offers several advantages, such as minimal heat input, no distortion or warping, and excellent joint strength and integrity. The process is highly efficient, with welding times typically ranging from microseconds to milliseconds, making it suitable for high-volume production applications in sectors including automotive, aerospace, electronics, and various other industries where strong and reliable joints are required. It provides a cost-effective solution for joining lightweight materials, reducing weight and improving fuel efficiency in transportation systems. This contribution concerns an application for the automotive sector (body-in-white) and specifically examines the welding of AA6082-T6 aluminum alloy with HC420LA cold-rolled micro-alloyed steel. One of the main aspects for MPW optimization is the determination of the process window that does not depend on the equipment used but rather on the parameters associated with the physical mechanisms of the process. It was demonstrated that process windows based on contact angle versus output voltage diagrams can be of interest for production use for a given component (shock absorbers, suspension struts, chassis components, instrument panel beams, next-generation crash boxes, etc.). The process window based on impact pressures versus impact velocity for different impact angles, in addition to not depending on the equipment, allows highlighting other factors such as the pressure welding threshold for different temperatures in the impact zone, critical transition speeds for straight or wavy interface formation, and the jetting/no jetting effect transition. Experimental results demonstrated that optimal welding conditions are achieved with impact velocities between 900 and 1200 m/s, impact pressures of 3000–4000 MPa, and impact angles ranging from 18–35°. These conditions correspond to optimal technological parameters including gaps of 1.5–2 mm and output voltages between 7.5 and 8.5 kV. Successful welds require mean energy values above 20 kJ and weld specific energy values exceeding 150 kJ/m2. The study establishes critical failure thresholds: welds consistently failed when gap distances exceeded 3 mm, output voltage dropped below 5.5 kV, or impact pressures fell below 2000 MPa. To determine these impact parameters, relationships based on Buckingham’s π theorem provide a viable solution closely aligned with experimental reality. Additionally, shear tests were conducted to determine weld cohesion, enabling the integration of mechanical resistance isovalues into the process window. The findings reveal an inverse relationship between impact angle and weld specific energy, with higher impact velocities producing thicker intermetallic compounds (IMCs), emphasizing the need for careful parameter optimization to balance weld strength and IMC formation. Numerical simulations were conducted to investigate high-pressure water jets in air. The Eulerian multiphase model was employed as the computational framework. Through simulating a high-pressure water jet impinging on a flat plate, two turbulence treatment methodologies were initially examined, demonstrating that the mixture turbulence modeling approach exhibits superior predictive capability compared to the per-phase turbulence modeling approach. Subsequent analysis focused on evaluating turbulence model effects on the impact pressure distribution on the flat plate. The results obtained from the elliptic–blending turbulence model (the SST k-ω-φ-α model) and the other two industry-standard two-equation turbulence models (the realizable k-ε model and the SST k-ω model) were comparatively analyzed against experimental data. The analysis revealed that the SST k-ω-φ-α model demonstrates superior accuracy near the stagnation region. The effects of bubble diameter and surface tension were further examined. Quantitative analysis indicated that the impact pressure exhibits a decrease with decreasing bubble diameter until reaching a critical threshold, below which diameter variations exert negligible influence. Furthermore, surface tension effects were found to be insignificant for impact pressure predictions when the nozzle-to-plate distance was maintained below 100 nozzle diameters (100D). Simulations of free high-pressure water jets were performed to evaluate the model’s capability to predict long-distance jet dynamics. While the axial velocity profile showed satisfactory agreement with experimental measurements within 200D, discrepancies in water volume fraction prediction along the jet axis suggested limitations in phase interface modeling at extended propagation distances. Gears play an important role in modern machinery and are indispensable transmission components, particularly at high speeds, where lubrication is essential for the reliability and efficiency of the gear unit. In order to study the oil coverage law and heat dissipation mechanism of high-speed rotating meshing gears by injection angle, this paper adopts the moving particle semi-implicit method to establish a high-speed rotating gear lubrication model, study the intrinsic effect of different jet angles on gear lubrication, and build a gear lubrication bench for experimental verification. Numerical simulation found that with an increase in spray angle, the gear surface coverage and heat transfer coefficient of the high-speed rotating transmission gears initially increase and then decrease. They reflect the same lubrication law characteristics. When the injection angle was 90°, the surface coverage and heat transfer coefficient values were at their greatest, resulting in the best spray lubricating effect. According to the experimental results, under the conditions of 0.5 MPa injection pressure and high-speed rotation of the transmission gear with vertical injection, the lubricant covers the largest surface area of the gear and the least power loss. Simultaneously, in our previous study, we experimentally obtained the optimal parameter conditions on the basis of which we derived. The effect of nozzle diameter on jet lubrication was investigated in a previous study, and in this article, the effect of nozzle angle and distance on gear lubrication is investigated; the optimal conditions for high-speed lubrication of gears are the incident distance of 3.5 cm, incident angle of 90°, incident diameter of 1.5 mm, and gear speed of 2000 r/min, and the lubrication effect reaches the best ideal state; reduction in oil loss due to oil injection lubrication and power loss due to different parameters of the lubrication system. Lubrication design provides a theoretical foundation for the transmission system. Full article

Drought and metal pollution severely impact plant growth. Root-associated extremophilic fungi can improve plant performance, and their encapsulation improves protection and effectiveness. This study optimized the encapsulation conditions for an extremophilic fungus with plant growth-promoting traits using alginate–chitosan capsules. An endophytic fungus was isolated from the roots of Neltuma chilensis from the Atacama Desert and identified via internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing. Its plant growth-promoting traits, including exopolysaccharide, ammonium, siderophore, and indole acetic acid production and phosphorus solubilization, were evaluated. Freeze-dried Penicillium nalgiovense was encapsulated using jet-breaking extrusion, and capsule morphology and fungal survival were assessed via scanning electron microscope (SEM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and viability tests. Using Taguchi’s design, optimal conditions for sphericity (0.914 ± 0.002) and mean size (3.232 ± 0.087 mm) were achieved with 1% chitosan, a 5 cm distance to the gelation bath, and a 40 Hz vibration frequency. CLSM analysis confirmed the presence of the chitosan outer layer, revealing the capsule’s coating material encapsulating the fungus P. nalgiovense. The encapsulated fungus remained viable across disinfection times, demonstrating effective protection and gradual release. These findings emphasize the need for precise parameter control in fungal encapsulation, providing a basis for developing robust bioinoculants to support plant resilience in extreme environments. Microbial Decontamination of Fresh-Cut Carrots via Cold Atmospheric Plasma Treatment: Effect on Physicochemical and Nutritional Properties During Storage

The extension of shelf-life and enhancement of the safety and quality of fresh-cut ready-to-eat vegetables is an ongoing public health concern. The present study investigated the efficacy of cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) treatment for the decontamination of fresh-cut carrots inoculated with Escherichia coli. An atmospheric plasma jet system operating at 1 kVA was utilized for treatment with varying plasma jet nozzle to sample distances (10–40 mm), exposure times (10–60 s) and either argon or dry air at 3 bar as working gases. It was demonstrated that both working gases achieved more than 4 log reductions in E. coli within 60 s of treatment while maintaining carrot surface temperatures below 50 °C. During 3-week storage at 4 °C, the immediate effects of plasma treatment on quality parameters were found to be minimal, with no significant changes observed in color (ΔE < 3.0) parameters, β-carotene content, ascorbic acid levels, total phenolic content (TPC), or total antioxidant activity (TAA) following either treatment. Additionally, plasma-treated carrots retained their firmness, showing no significant texture loss, whereas untreated controls experienced a firmness decline of approximately 9% by the end of storage. Notably, TPC increased by up to 41%, and TAA increased significantly (p < 0.05) in plasma-treated samples during storage, especially in dry air plasma-treated carrots. These results demonstrated that CAP treatment can be successfully applied for rapid inactivation of E. coli on fresh-cut carrot surfaces while preserving original quality characteristics during refrigerated storage, offering potential as non-thermal preservation technology for fresh produce.
