Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems are important and essential for use in our daily comfort, either in homes, work, or transportation. And it is crucial to study the air movement coming from the inlet diffuser for a better design to enhance thermal comfort and energy consumption. The primary objective of the presented work is to investigate the thermal comfort within a faculty office occupied by two faculty members using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methodology. First, an independent mesh study was performed to reduce the uncertainty related to the mesh size. In addition, the presented CFD approach was validated against available experimental data from the literature. Then, the effect of inlet air temperature and velocity on air movement and temperature distribution is investigated using Ansys Fluent. To be as reasonable as possible, the persons who occupy the office, lights, windows, tables, the door, and computers are accounted for in the CFD simulation. After that, the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) was evaluated at three different locations inside the room, and the approximate total energy consumption was obtained for the presented cases. The CFD results showed that, for the presented cases, the sensation was neutral with the lowest energy consumption when the supply air velocity was 1 m/s and the temperature was 21 °C. Full article

Excessive alcohol consumption is associated with systemic health risks due to the production of acetaldehyde, a primary carcinogen that not only pollutes the environment but also endangers human health. In this study, a promising bacterial strain for biodegrading both ethanol and acetaldehyde was successfully isolated from the traditional fermented food Jiaosu and identified as Acetobacter ghanensis JN01 based on average nucleotide identity (ANI) analysis. Initial ethanol of 1 g/L was completely biodegraded within 4 h, while initial acetaldehyde of 1 g/L was also rapidly removed at 2 or 1 h by whole cells or cell-free extracts (CEs) of JN01, respectively, which indicated that JN01 indeed has a strong ability in the biodegradation of both ethanol and acetaldehyde. Whole-genome sequencing revealed a 2.85 Mb draft genome of JN01 with 57.0% guanine–cytosine (GC) content and the key metabolic genes (adh1, adh2, and aldh) encoding involving alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), co-located with NADH dehydrogenase genes and ethanol-responsive regulatory motifs, supporting the metabolic pathway of transforming ethanol to acetaldehyde, and, subsequently, converting acetaldehyde to acetic acid. Furthermore, selected in vitro safety-related traits of JN01 were also assessed, which is very important in the development of microbial catalysts against both ethanol and acetaldehyde. Full article

Trajectory data contain numerous sensitive attributes. Unauthorized disclosure of precise user trajectory information generates persistent privacy and security concerns that significantly impact daily life. Most existing trajectory privacy protection schemes focus on geographic trajectories while neglecting the critical importance of semantic trajectories, resulting in ongoing privacy vulnerabilities. To address this limitation, we propose the Semantic Behavior Sequence-based Trajectory Privacy Protection method (SBS-TPP). Our approach integrates short-term and long-term behavioral patterns within a user behavior modeling layer to identify user preferences. A dual-model framework (geographic and semantic) generates noise-injected trajectories with maximized noise potential. This methodology applies symmetric noise addition to both geographic trajectory fragments and semantic trajectory segments, optimizing trajectory data utility while ensuring robust protection of sensitive information. The SBS-TPP framework operates in the following two phases: firstly, behavior modeling, which comprises interest extraction from behavioral trajectory sequences, and secondly, noise generation, which creates synthetic noise locations with maximal semantic expectation from original locations, yielding privacy-enhanced trajectories for publication. Experimental results demonstrate that our interest extraction model achieves 93.7% accuracy while maintaining 81.6% data utility under strict privacy guarantees. The proposed method significantly enhances data usability and enables effective recommendation services without compromising user privacy or security. Full article

This study examines the adverse environmental impacts of solar photovoltaic parks located in established protected areas, aiming to determine the level of landscape fragmentation through the calculation of relevant landscape metrics. For this purpose, a case study was carried out in a Mediterranean Natura 2000 Special Protection Area (SPA), and landscape metrics were calculated using Geographic Information System spatial analysis tools. The analysis of metrics showed that the installation of renewable energy parks within the designated protected area negatively affect landscape fragmentation and the absence of carefully defined and evidence-based mitigation measures. The land cover categories that are significantly affected are those considered critical habitats of bird species that have been designated as SPAs. The results of this study highlight the need to integrate, in the National Renewable Energy Spatial Plans, specific biodiversity objectives, such as conservation objectives and the suspension of the installation of photovoltaic parks in certain areas that are important for conservation of biodiversity, in order to ensure the overall sustainability of renewable energy production. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the long-term energy performance and economic viability of offshore wind farms planned for locations within the Polish Exclusive Economic Zone of the Baltic Sea. It focuses on the impact of wind farm layout, aerodynamic wake effects, and rotor blade surface degradation. Using the Jensen wake model, modified Weibull wind speed distributions are computed for various turbine spacing configurations (5D, 8D, and 10D) and wake decay constants kw{0.02;0.03;0.05}. The results reveal a trade-off between turbine density and individual turbine efficiency: tighter spacing increases the total annual energy production (AEP) but also intensifies wake-induced losses. The study shows that cumulative losses due to wake effects can range from 16.5% to 38%, depending on the scenario considered. This corresponds to capacity factors ranging from 33.4% to 45.2%. Finally, lifetime productivity scenarios over 20 and 25 years are analyzed, and the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) is calculated to assess the economic implications of design choices. The analysis reveals that, depending on the values of the considered parameters, the LCOE can range from USD 116.3 to 175.7 per MWh produced. The study highlights the importance of early stage optimization in maximizing both the energy yield and cost-efficiency in offshore wind farm developments. Full article

The Impact of VAT Credit Refunds on Enterprises’ Sustainable Development Capability: A Socio-Technical Systems Theory Perspective

We investigate whether China’s Value-Added Tax (VAT) Credit Refund policy influences firms’ sustainable development capability (SDC), which reflects innovation-driven growth and green development. Exploiting the 2018 implementation of the VAT Credit Refund policy as a quasi-natural experiment, we employ a difference-in-differences (DID) approach and find causal evidence that the policy significantly enhances firms’ SDC. This suggests that fiscal instruments like VAT refunds are valued by firms as drivers of long-term sustainable and high-quality development. Our mediating analyses further reveal that the policy promotes firms’ SDC by strengthening artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and facilitating intelligent transformation. This mechanism “AI Capability Building—Intelligent Transformation” aligns with the socio-technical systems theory (STST), highlighting the interactive evolution of technological and social subsystems in shaping firm capabilities. The heterogeneity analyses indicate that the positive effect of VAT Credit Refund policy on SDC is more pronounced among small-scale and non-high-tech firms, firms with lower perceived economic policy uncertainty, higher operational diversification, lower reputational capital, and those located in regions with a higher level of marketization. We also find that the policy has persistent long-term effects, with improved SDC associated with enhanced ESG performance and green innovation outcomes. Our findings have important implications for understanding the SDC through the lens of STST and offer policy insights for deepening VAT reform and promoting intelligent and green transformation in China’s enterprises. Visual search is a core component of map reading, influenced by both cartographic design and human perceptual processes. This study investigates whether the location of a target cartographic symbol—central or peripheral—can be predicted using eye-tracking data and machine learning techniques. Two datasets were analyzed, each derived from separate studies involving visual search tasks with varying map characteristics. A comprehensive set of eye movement features, including fixation duration, saccade amplitude, and gaze dispersion, were extracted and standardized. Feature selection and polynomial interaction terms were applied to enhance model performance. Twelve supervised classification algorithms were tested, including Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, and Support Vector Machines. The models were evaluated using accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and ROC-AUC. Results show that models trained on the first dataset achieved higher accuracy and class separation, with AdaBoost and Gradient Boosting performing best (accuracy = 0.822; ROC-AUC > 0.86). In contrast, the second dataset presented greater classification challenges, despite high recall in some models. Feature importance analysis revealed that fixation standard deviation as a proxy for gaze dispersion, particularly along the vertical axis, was the most predictive metric. These findings suggest that gaze behavior can reliably indicate the spatial focus of visual search, providing valuable insight for the development of adaptive, gaze-aware cartographic interfaces. Conventional melanoma is exceedingly rare in the pediatric population, particularly among prepubescent children, and its diagnosis and management necessitate a multidisciplinary approach. The objective of this present report is to delineate the diagnostic pathway and therapeutic management of a 4-year-old girl with conventional melanoma, with particular focus on the molecular context. A pigmented lesion located on the auricle was surgically excised, and subsequent histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses confirmed the diagnosis of malignant melanoma (pT3b). Radiologic investigations revealed no evidence of metastatic disease, and comprehensive genetic testing utilizing next-generation sequencing (NGS) identified no pathogenic variants in the germline genes examined, nor in the BRAF, NRAS, KRAS, and TP53 genes within the excised lesion. The patient remains in good general health. This case report adds to the limited body of literature on melanoma in pediatric patients and underscores the importance of thorough diagnostic evaluation in this age group. Full article

The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that influence tourist behavior and revisit intentions in the context of halal tourism. The antecedent variables in this study included religiosity, digital halal literacy, halal destination features, contentment, and trust. This is a quantitative study that used travelers that visited halal tourism attractions in West Sumatra, Indonesia, as the sample population. The sample size was 400 respondents. The data were analyzed using the partial least squares–structural equation model (PLS-SEM). We discovered that religiosity is an important predictor of contentment and trust. Satisfaction was achieved through digital halal literacy and halal destination qualities and was found to have a significant influence on trust, tourist behavior, and revisit intentions. Finally, trust was found to have a significant association with intention to revisit and behavior. The results of this research are insightful for managers and policymakers on how to provide halal tourism attributes and analyze tourists’ digital halal literacy that lead to tourist satisfaction. This study also provides further knowledge to policymakers and local authorities on how to promote future tourist participation in halal tourism development in Indonesia; thus, it can help create more tourist returns for further visits to the same location in the future. Telomeres are protective DNA sequences located at chromosome ends, essential to maintaining genomic stability. This narrative review examines how maternal lifestyle factors during pregnancy influence fetal telomere length (TL). Positive associations have been identified between offspring’s TL and maternal consumption of nutrients such as vitamins C and D, folate, and magnesium. Additionally, adherence to a Mediterranean diet and regular physical activity during pregnancy are correlated with increased placental TL, supporting fetal genomic integrity. Conversely, maternal dietary patterns high in carbohydrates, fats, or alcohol, as well as exposure to triclosan and sleep-disordered breathing, negatively correlate with offspring’s TL. Maternal infections may also shorten TL through heightened inflammation and oxidative stress. However, evidence regarding the impact of other lifestyle factors—including maternal stress, smoking, caffeine intake, polyunsaturated fatty acid consumption, obesity, and sleep quality—remains inconsistent. Given that shorter telomere length has been associated with cardiovascular, pulmonary, and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as certain types of cancer, these findings highlight the vital importance of maternal health during pregnancy in order to prevent potential adverse effects on the fetus. Further studies are required to elucidate the precise timing, intensity, and interplay of these influences, enabling targeted prenatal interventions to enhance offspring health outcomes. Full article

Gastrodia elata Blume is an important medicinal orchid, yet its large-scale cultivation is increasingly threatened by fungal diseases. The 4-coumarate–CoA ligase (4CL) gene family directs a key step in phenylpropanoid metabolism and plant defence, but its composition and function in G. elata have not been investigated. We mined the G. elata genome for 4CL homologues, mapped their chromosomal locations, and analysed their gene structures, conserved motifs, phylogenetic relationships, promoter cis-elements and codon usage bias. Publicly available transcriptomes were used to examine tissue-specific expression and responses to fungal infection. Subcellular localisation of selected proteins was verified by transient expression in Arabidopsis protoplasts. Fourteen Ge4CL genes were identified and grouped into three clades. Two members, Ge4CL2 and Ge4CL5, were strongly upregulated in tubers challenged with fungal pathogens. Ge4CL2 localised to the nucleus, whereas Ge4CL5 localised to both the nucleus and the cytoplasm. Codon usage analysis suggested that Escherichia coli and Oryza sativa are suitable heterologous hosts for Ge4CL expression. This study provides the first genome-wide catalogue of 4CL genes in G. elata and suggests that Ge4CL2 and Ge4CL5 may participate in antifungal defence, although functional confirmation is still required. The dataset furnishes a foundation for functional characterisation and the molecular breeding of disease-resistant G. elata cultivars. Full article

Illegal logging is a major threat to tropical forests; however, control mechanisms and efforts to combat illegal logging have not effectively curbed fraud in the production chain, highlighting the need for effective methods to verify the geographic origin of timber. This study investigates the application of multi-elemental analysis combined with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to discriminate the provenance of tropical timber in the Brazilian Legal Amazon. Wood samples of Hymenaea courbaril L. (Jatobá), Handroanthus sp. (Ipê), and Manilkara huberi (Ducke) A. Chevalier. (Maçaranduba) were taken from multiple sites. Elemental concentrations were determined via Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), and CA was applied to evaluate geographic differentiation. Significant differences in elemental profiles were found among locations, particularly when using the intermediate disk portions (25% to 75%), and especially the average of all five sampled portions, which proved most effective in geographic discrimination of the trunk. Elements such as Ca, Sr, Cr, Cu, Zn, and B were especially important for spatial discrimination. These findings underscore the forensic potential of multi-elemental wood profiling as a tool to support law enforcement and environmental monitoring by providing scientifically grounded evidence of timber origin. (1) Single-nucleotide polymorphisms within precursor regions of microRNAs play crucial biological roles. (2) Utilizing a Gushi–Anka F2 resource population (n = 860), we screened and validated miRNA SNPs. A SNP mutation in the miR-3528 precursor region was identified. Specific primers were designed to amplify the polymorphic fragment. Genotyping was performed for this individual SNP across the population, using the MassArray system. Association analyses were conducted between this SNP and chicken growth and body measurement traits, carcass traits, meat quality traits, and serum enzyme activities. (3) The rs14098602 (+12 bp A > G) was identified within the precursor region of gga-miR-3528. Significant associations (p < 0.05) were observed between this SNP and chicken growth traits (body weight at the age of 0 day, body weight at the age of 2 weeks, and body weight at the age of 4 weeks), carcass traits (evisceration weight), meat quality traits (subcutaneous fat rate and pectoral muscle density), and serum enzyme activities (total protein, albumin, globulin, cholinesterase, and lactate dehydrogenase). (4) These findings suggest that the polymorphism at rs14098602 may influence chicken growth, meat quality, and serum biochemical indices, through specific mechanisms. The gga-miR-3528 gene likely plays an important role in chicken development. Therefore, this SNP can serve as a molecular marker for genetic breeding and auxiliary selection of growth-related traits, facilitating the rapid establishment of elite chicken populations with superior genetic resources. Colorectal cancer (CRC) constitutes a major global health concern, ranking as the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality. The current review explores sex-based differences in CRC epidemiology, risk factors, tumor biology, and clinical outcomes. Males exhibit a higher incidence and mortality rate, with left-sided (distal) CRC predominating, while females are more frequently diagnosed with right-sided (proximal) tumors, which tend to be more aggressive and less responsive to conventional chemotherapy. Genetic disparities, including microsatellite instability and X-chromosome tumor suppressor genes, contribute to sex-specific differences in tumor progression and treatment response. Immune variations also influence disease outcomes, with females exhibiting stronger immune surveillance but higher exhaustion markers. Lifestyle factors such as body mass index (BMI), smoking, and hormonal influences further modulate CRC risk. While males are more vulnerable to obesity-related CRC, central obesity (waist-to-hip ratio) emerges as a stronger predictor in females. Additionally, smoking increases CRC risk differentially by tumor location. These findings underscore the importance of sex-specific approaches in CRC prevention, screening, and treatment, advocating for personalized medicine strategies tailored to gender-based biological and clinical distinctions. This study aimed to investigate the effect of organizational culture on employee-perceived performance and whether this relationship is mediated by perceived organizational support and moderated by employee motivation. Three hundred individuals working in organizations located in Portugal and Angola participated in this study. This is a quantitative, exploratory, correlational, and cross-sectional study. The results indicate that only goal culture, rule culture, affective organizational support perception, and identified motivation have a positive and significant effect on perceived performance. Supportive culture and goal culture have a positive and significant effect on affective organizational support perception. All dimensions of organizational culture have a significant effect on cognitive organizational support perception, with the effects of the supportive culture and the goal culture being positive and significant, while the effects of the innovative culture and the rule culture are negative and significant. The perception of affective organizational support has a total mediating effect on the relationship between goal culture and perceived performance. Intrinsic motivation and identified motivation have a moderating effect on the relationship between all dimensions of organizational culture and perceived performance. This study is expected to help human resource managers understand the importance of the type of organizational culture that prevails in their organization to enhance employees’ perception of organizational support and performance.
