This work presents a high-fidelity simulation of the Peach Bottom turbine trip (PBTT) benchmark using the Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA), a multiphysics reactor modeling tool developed by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors energy innovation hub. The PBTT benchmark, based on a 1977 transient event at the end of cycle 2 in a General Electric Type-4 boiling water reactor (BWR), is a critical test case for validating core physics models with thermal feedback during rapid reactivity events. VERA was employed to perform end-to-end, pin-resolved simulations from conditions at the beginning of cycle 1 through the turbine-trip transient, incorporating detailed neutron transport, fuel depletion, and subchannel thermal hydraulics. The simulation reproduced key benchmark observables with high accuracy: the peak power excursion occurred at 0.75 s, matching the scram time and closely aligning with the benchmark average of 0.742 s; the simulated maximum power spike was approximately 7600 MW, which is within 3% of the benchmark average of 7400 MW; and void-collapse dynamics were consistent with benchmark expectations. Reactivity predictions during cycles 1 and 2 remained within 1500 pcm and 400 pcm of criticality, respectively. These results confirm VERA’s ability to model complex coupled neutronic and thermal hydraulic behavior in a BWR turbine-trip transient, which will support its use in future studies of modeling dryout, fuel performance, and uncertainty quantification for transients of this type. Background/Objectives: In recent years, the discharge of antibiotics into rivers and irrigation canals has increased. However, few studies have addressed the impact of these compounds on agricultural fields that use such water to meet crop demands. Methods: In this study, the transport of two types of gentamicin (pure gentamicin and gentamicin sulfate) was modeled at concentrations of 150 and 300 μL/L, respectively, in a soil with more than 60 years of agricultural use. Infiltration tests under constant head conditions and gentamicin transport experiments were conducted in acrylic columns measuring 14 cm in length and 12.7 cm in diameter. The scaling parameters for the Richards equation were obtained from experimental data, while those for the advection–dispersion equation were estimated using inverse methods through a nonlinear optimization algorithm. In addition, a fractal-based model for saturated hydraulic conductivity was employed. Results: It was found that the dispersivity of gentamicin sulfate is 3.1 times higher than that of pure gentamicin. Based on the estimated parameters, two simulation scenarios were conducted: continuous application of gentamicin and soil flushing after antibiotic discharge. The results show that the transport velocity of gentamicin sulfate in the soil may have short-term consequences for the emergence of resistant microorganisms due to the destination of wastewater containing antibiotic residues. Conclusions: Finally, further research is needed to evaluate the impact of antibiotics on soil physical properties, as well as their effects on irrigated crops, animals that consume such water, and the soil microbiota. The placement of hydraulic elements in existing pool-type fishways to make them more suitable for Cyprinid fish is an issue of increasing interest in fishway research. Hydrodynamic characteristics and fish behavior at the representative pool of the fishway with bottom orifices and notches were assessed at the Dagdelen hydropower plant in the Ceyhan River Basin, Türkiye. Three-dimensional velocity measurements were taken in the pool of the fishway using an Acoustic Doppler velocimeter. The measurements were taken with and without a brush block at two different vertical distances from the bottom, which were below and above the level of bristles tips. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was conducted for the studied fishway. The numerical model utilized Large Eddy Simulation (LES) combined with the Darcy–Forchheimer law, wherein brush blocks were represented as homogenous porous media. Our results revealed that the relative submergence of bristles in the brush block plays a very important role in velocity and Reynolds shear stress (RSS) distributions. After the placement of the submerged brush block, flow velocity and the lateral RSS component were reduced, and a resting area was created behind the brush block below the bristles’ tips. Fish movements in the pool were recorded by underwater cameras under real-time operation conditions. The heatmap analysis, which is a 2-dimensional fish spatial presence visualization technique for a specific time period, showed that Capoeta damascina avoided the areas with high turbulent fluctuations during the tests, and 61.5% of the fish presence intensity was found to be in the low Reynolds shear regions in the pool. This provides a clear case for the real-world ecological benefits of retrofitting existing pool-weir fishways with such flexible hydraulic elements. Full article

Complex mechanical systems, such as agricultural combine harvesters, are subjected to dynamic excitations from multiple coupled sources, compromising structural integrity and operational reliability. Disentangling these vibrations to identify dominant sources and quantify their transmission paths remains a significant engineering challenge. This study proposes a robust diagnostic framework to address this issue. We employed a multi-condition vibration test with sequential source activation and an improved Operational Transfer Path Analysis (OTPA) method. Applied to a harvester chassis, the results revealed that vibration energy is predominantly concentrated in the 0–200 Hz frequency band. Path contribution analysis quantified that the “cutting header → conveyor trough → hydraulic cylinder → chassis frame” path is the most critical contributor to vertical vibration, with a vibration acceleration level of 117.6 dB. Further analysis identified the engine (29.3 Hz) as the primary source for vertical vibration, while lateral vibration was mainly attributed to a coupled resonance between the threshing cylinder (58 Hz) and the engine’s second-order harmonic. This study’s theoretical contribution lies in validating a powerful methodology for vibration source apportionment in complex systems. Practically, the findings provide direct, actionable insights for targeted structural optimization and vibration suppression. Full article

To investigate temporal deformation mechanisms of hydraulic asphalt concrete slope flow under evolving temperatures, this study developed a novel temperature-controlled slope flow intelligent test apparatus. Using this apparatus, slope flow tests were conducted at four temperature levels: 20 °C, 35 °C, 50 °C, and 70 °C. By applying nonlinear dynamics theory, the temporal evolution of slope flow deformation and its nonlinear mechanical characteristics under varying temperatures were thoroughly analyzed. Results indicate that the thermal stability of hydraulic asphalt concrete is synergistically governed by the phase-transition behavior between asphalt binder and aggregates. Temporal evolution of slope flow exhibits a distinct three-stage pattern as follows: rapid growth (0~12 h), where sharp temperature rise disrupts the primary skeleton of coarse aggregates; decelerated growth (12~24 h), where an embryonic secondary skeleton forms and progressively resists deformation; stabilization (>24 h), where reorganization of coarse aggregates is completed, establishing structural equilibrium. The thermal stability temperature influence factor (δ) shows a nonlinear concave growth trend with increasing test temperature. Dynamically, this process transitions sequentially through critical stability, nonlinear stability, period-doubling oscillatory stability, and unsteady states. Full article

Freshwater ecosystems—home to roughly 10% of known species—are losing biodiversity to river-morphology alteration, hydraulic infrastructure, and pollution, yet most ecological network (EN) studies focus on terrestrial systems and overlook hydrological connectivity under human disturbance. To address this, we devised and tested a dual EN framework in the Yangtze River Delta’s Ecological Green Integration Demonstration Zone, constructing freshwater and terrestrial networks independently before merging them. Using InVEST Habitat Quality, MSPA, the MCR model, and Linkage Mapper, we delineated sources and corridors: freshwater sources combined NDWI-InVEST indicators with a modified, sluice-weighted resistance surface, producing 78 patches (mean 348.7 ha) clustered around major lakes and 456.4 km of corridors (42.50% primary). Terrestrial sources used NDVI-InVEST with a conventional resistance surface, yielding 100 smaller patches (mean 121.6 ha) dispersed across woodlands and agricultural belts and 658.8 km of corridors (36.45% primary). Unified models typically favor large sources from dominant ecosystems while overlooking small, high-value patches in non-dominant systems, generating corridors that span both freshwater and terrestrial habitats and mismatch species migration patterns. Our dual framework better reflects species migration characteristics, accurately captures dispersal paths, and successfully integrates key agroforestry-complex patches that unified models miss, providing a practical tool for biodiversity protection in disturbed freshwater–terrestrial landscapes. The electrification of road vehicles is a relatively mature sector, while other areas of mobility, such as construction machinery, are just beginning their transition to electric solutions. This work presents the design and realization of an integrated drive system specifically developed for retrofitting fan drives in heavy machinery, like bulldozers and tractors, utilizing existing 48 VDC batteries. By replacing or complementing internal combustion and hydraulic technologies with electric solutions, significant advantages in efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and versatility can be achieved. Focusing on the fan drive system addresses the critical challenge of thermal management in high ambient temperatures and harsh environments, particularly given the high current requirements for 3kW-class applications. A sensorless architecture has been selected to enhance reliability by eliminating mechanical position sensors. The developed fan drive has been extensively tested both on a braking bench and in real-world applications, demonstrating its effectiveness and robustness. Future work will extend this prototype to electrify additional onboard hydraulic motors in these machines, further advancing the electrification of heavy-duty equipment and improving overall efficiency and environmental impact. An electro-hydraulic servo loading system for a pavement mechanical properties test device was designed. The simulation analysis and test results showed that the PID control met the design requirements, but the output’s maximum error did not. Therefore, a fast terminal sliding mode control strategy with an extended state observer (ESO) was proposed. A tracking differentiator was constructed to obtain smooth differential signals from the input signals. The order of the system was reduced by considering the third and higher orders of the system as the total disturbance, and the states and the total disturbance of the system were estimated using the ESO. The fast terminal sliding mode control achieved fast convergence of the system within a limited time. The simulation results showed that the proposed control strategy improved the system accuracy and anti-disturbance ability, and system control performance was optimized. Full article

In this paper, the effective bulk modulus of pump-controlled hydraulic cylinders is studied in the context of linear time-invariant modeling and control. Using an experimental test-rig, the minimum expected value of the effective bulk modulus is identified, and its impact on stability and achievable performance under feedback control is analyzed. A method for control design and analysis based on a single operating point, analogous to that of what is traditionally utilized in valve-controlled systems, is proposed and validated. It is shown that despite the drastic reduction in the minimum effective bulk modulus occurring in these systems compared to that of valve-controlled cylinders, adequate performance may be achieved under feedback control due to the presence of adequate damping. Two critical modeling aspects commonly neglected in the research literature on these systems are highlighted, and their importance is demonstrated. These results demonstrate the efficacy of linear time-invariant methods in pump-controlled cylinders, as well as the importance of making appropriate modeling decisions, and should therefore be of high relevance to both researchers and engineers working with pump-controlled cylinders. In the Kelameili volcanic gas reservoir, primary hydraulic fracturing treatments in some wells take place on a limited scale, resulting in a rapid decline in production post stimulation and necessitating re-fracturing operations. However, prolonged production has led to a significant evolution in the in situ stress field, which complicates the design of re-fracturing parameters. To address this, this study adopts an integrated geology–engineering approach to develop a formation-specific geomechanical model, using rock mechanical test results and well-log inversion to reconstruct the reservoir’s initial stress field. The dynamic stress field simulations and re-fracturing parameter optimization were performed for Block Dixi-14. The results show that stress superposition effects induced by multiple fracturing stages and injection–production cycles have significantly altered the current in situ stress distribution. For Well K6, the optimized re-fracturing parameters comprised a pump rate of 12 m3/min, total fluid volume of 1200 m3, prepad fluid ratio of 50–60%, and proppant volume of 75 m3, and the daily gas production increased by 56% correspondingly, demonstrating the effectiveness of the optimized re-fracturing design. This study not only provides a more realistic simulation framework for fracturing volcanic rock gas reservoirs but also offers a scientific basis for fracture design optimization and enhanced gas recovery. The geology–engineering integrated methodology enables the accurate prediction and assessment of dynamic stress field evolution during fracturing, thereby guiding field operations. Full article

With the frequent occurrence of global floods, the demand for emergency rescue equipment has grown rapidly. The development and technological innovation of digital hydraulic drive systems (DHDSs) for emergency drainage pumps (EDPs) have become key to improving rescue efficiency. However, EDPs are prone to being affected by random and uncertain loads during operation. To achieve intelligent and efficient rescue operations, a DHDS suitable for EDPs was proposed. Firstly, the configuration and operation mode of the DHDS for EDPs were analyzed. Based on this, a multi-field coupling dynamic simulation platform for the DHDS was constructed. Secondly, the output characteristics of the system under alternating loads were simulated and analyzed. Finally, a test platform for the EDP DHDS was established, and the dynamic characteristics of the system under alternating loads were explored. The results show that as the load torque of the alternating loads increases, the amplitude of the pressure of the motor also increases, the output flow of the hydraulic-controlled proportional reversing valve (HCPRV) changes slightly, and the fluctuation range of the rotational speed of the motor increases. The fluctuation range of the pressure and the rotational speed of the motor are basically not affected by the frequency of alternating loads, but the fluctuation amplitude of the output flow of the HCPRV reduces with the increase in the frequency of alternating loads. This system can respond to changes in load relatively quickly under alternating loads and can return to a stable state in a short time. It has laudable anti-interference ability and output stability. Deployment of nature-based systems for mine water treatment is constrained by system size, and the evidence suggests decreasing hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) of organic substrates over time compromises performance. In lab-scale continuous-flow reactors, we investigated (1) the geochemical and hydraulic performance of organic substrates used in nature-based systems for metals removal (via bacterial sulfate reduction) from mine water, and then (2) the potential to operate systems modestly contaminated with Zn (0.5 mg/L) at reduced hydraulic residence times (HRTs). Bioreactors containing limestone, straw, and wood chips, with and without compost and/or sewage sludge all achieved 88%–90% Zn removal, but those without compost/sludge had higher Ksat (929–1546 m/d). Using a high Ksat substrate, decreasing the HRT from 15 to 9 h had no impact on Zn removal (92.5% to 97.5%). Although the sulfate reduction rate decreased at a shorter HRT, microbial analysis showed high relative abundance (2%–7%) of sulfate reducing bacteria, and geochemical modelling pointed to ZnS(s) precipitation as the main attenuation mechanism (mean ZnS saturation index = 3.91–4.23). High permeability organic substrate treatment systems operated at a short HRT may offer potential for wider deployment of such systems, but pilot-scale testing under ambient environmental conditions is advisable. When a high-speed rotating projectile faces high impact loads, the sensitive parts of the control system can get damaged, resulting in operational failure. It is crucial to develop a unique buffer structure that offers impact resistance and has a small contact area. An annularly distributed multi-sphere point contact structure was designed and fabricated on a magnesium alloy substrate based on the Hertz contact theory. The accuracy of the finite element numerical model, constructed using Abaqus/Explicit, was verified through hydraulic impact tests. The impact mechanical properties of the structure were studied by analyzing the influence of the number, diameter, and cavity radius of hemispheres using an experimentally verified finite element model. The axial and radial deformations of the structure were compared and analyzed. The research findings indicate that the deformation and impact resistance of the structure can be greatly influenced by increasing the number of hemispheres, enlarging the hemisphere diameter, and incorporating internal cavities. Specifically, with 6 hemispheres, each with a diameter of Φ 6 mm and a cavity radius of R1.5 mm, the axial and radial deformations are only 1.03 mm and 3.02 mm, respectively. The contact area of a single hemisphere is 7.16 mm2. The study offers new perspectives on choosing buffer structures in high-impact environments. Full article

Soil improvement is one of the fundamental practices in civil engineering, with a long-standing history. In today’s context, the rapidly increasing demand for construction driven by urbanization has further emphasized the necessity and significance of soil stabilization techniques. This study aims to determine the optimum parameters for improving sandy soils by incorporating sodium alginate (SA) as a biopolymer additive into the microbial calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) process. Sand types S1, S2, and S3, each with distinct particle size distributions, were selected, and the specimens were prepared at medium relative density. Three distinct approaches, MICP, SA, and MICP + SA, were tested for comparison. Additionally, two different improvement methods, injection and mixing, were applied to investigate their effects on the geotechnical properties of the soils. In this context, hydraulic conductivity, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), and calcite content tests, as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses, were performed to assess the changes in soil behavior. SA contributed positively to the overall efficiency of the MICP process. The study highlights SA-assisted MICP as an alternative that enhances the microstructural integrity of treated soils and responds to the environmental limitations of conventional methods through sustainable innovation. Fluidized solidified soil (FSS) has emerged as a promising material for marine pile scour remediation, yet its limited construction window and vulnerability to hydraulic erosion before sufficient curing constrain its broader application. This study systematically evaluates FSS formulations based on dredged sediment, cement partially replaced by silica fume (i.e., 0%, 4%, 8%, and 12%), and quicklime activation under three water–solid ratios (WSR, i.e., 0.525, 0.55, and 0.575). Experimental assessments included flowability tests, unconfined compressive strength, direct shear tests, and microstructural analysis via XRD and SEM. The results indicate that SF substitution significantly mitigates flowability loss during the 90–120 min interval, thereby extending the operational period. Moreover, the greatest enhancement in mechanical performance was achieved at an 8% SF replacement: at WSR = 0.55, the 3-day UCS increased by 22.78%, while the 7-day cohesion and internal friction angle rose by 13.97% and 2.59%, respectively. Microscopic analyses also confirmed that SF’s pozzolanic reaction generated additional C-S-H gel. However, the SF substitution exhibits a pronounced threshold effect, with levels above 8% introducing unreacted particles that disrupt the cementitious network. These results underscore the critical balance between flowability and early-age strength for stable marine pile scour repair, with WSR = 0.525 and 8% SF substitution identified as the optimal mix.
