Population aging poses significant challenges to the sustainability of pension systems. This study presents an integrated methodological approach that uniquely combines actuarial life-cycle modeling with agent-based simulation to assess the potential of Reverse Mortgage Loans (RMLs) as a dual lever for enhancing retiree welfare and supporting pension system resilience under demographic and financial uncertainty. We explore Reverse Mortgage Loans (RMLs) as a potential financial instrument to support retirees while alleviating pressure on public pensions. Unlike prior research that treats individual decisions or policy outcomes in isolation, our hybrid model explicitly captures feedback loops between household-level behavior and system-wide financial stability. To test our hypothesis that RMLs can improve individual consumption outcomes and bolster systemic solvency, we develop a hybrid model combining actuarial techniques and agent-based simulations, incorporating stochastic housing prices, longevity risk, regulatory capital requirements, and demographic shifts. This dual-framework enables a structured investigation of how micro-level financial decisions propagate through market dynamics, influencing solvency, pricing, and adoption trends. Our central hypothesis is that reverse mortgages, when actuarially calibrated and macroprudentially regulated, enhance individual financial well-being while preserving long-run solvency at the system level. Simulation results indicate that RMLs can improve consumption smoothing, raise expected utility for retirees, and contribute to long-term fiscal sustainability. Moreover, we introduce a dynamic regulatory mechanism that adjusts capital buffers based on evolving market and demographic conditions, enhancing system resilience. Our simulation design supports multi-scenario testing of financial robustness and policy outcomes, providing a transparent tool for stress-testing RML adoption at scale. These findings suggest that, when well-regulated, RMLs can serve as a viable supplement to traditional retirement financing. Rather than offering prescriptive guidance, this framework provides insights to policymakers, financial institutions, and regulators seeking to integrate RMLs into broader pension strategies. Flocculants are indispensable in water and wastewater treatment, enabling the aggregation and removal of suspended particles, colloids, and emulsions. However, the conventional development and application of flocculants rely heavily on empirical methods, which are time-consuming, resource-intensive, and environmentally problematic due to issues such as sludge production and chemical residues. Recent advances in machine learning (ML) have opened transformative avenues for the design, optimization, and intelligent application of flocculants. This review systematically examines the integration of ML into flocculant research, covering algorithmic approaches, data-driven structure–property modeling, high-throughput formulation screening, and smart process control. ML models—including random forests, neural networks, and Gaussian processes—have successfully predicted flocculation performance, guided synthesis optimization, and enabled real-time dosing control. Applications extend to both synthetic and bioflocculants, with ML facilitating strain engineering, fermentation yield prediction, and polymer degradability assessments. Furthermore, the convergence of ML with IoT, digital twins, and life cycle assessment tools has accelerated the transition toward sustainable, adaptive, and low-impact treatment technologies. Despite its potential, challenges remain in data standardization, model interpretability, and real-world implementation. This review concludes by outlining strategic pathways for future research, including the development of open datasets, hybrid physics–ML frameworks, and interdisciplinary collaborations. By leveraging ML, the next generation of flocculant systems can be more effective, environmentally benign, and intelligently controlled, contributing to global water sustainability goals. This review surveys recent advances and emerging prospects in phase-transfer catalysis (PTC) for fuel desulfurization. In response to increasingly stringent environmental regulations, the removal of sulfur from transportation fuels has become imperative for curbing SOx emissions. Conventional hydrodesulfurization (HDS) operates under severe temperature–pressure conditions and displays limited efficacy toward sterically hindered thiophenic compounds, motivating the exploration of non-hydrogen routes such as oxidative desulfurization (ODS). Within ODS, PTC offers distinctive benefits by shuttling reactants across immiscible phases, thereby enhancing reaction rates and selectivity. In particular, PTC enables efficient migration of organosulfur substrates from the hydrocarbon matrix into an aqueous phase where they are oxidized and subsequently extracted. The review first summarizes the deployment of classic PTC systems—quaternary ammonium salts, crown ethers, and related agents—in ODS operations and then delineates the underlying phase-transfer mechanisms, encompassing reaction-controlled, thermally triggered, photo-responsive, and pH-sensitive cycles. Attention is next directed to a new generation of catalysts, including quaternary-ammonium polyoxometalates, imidazolium-substituted polyoxometalates, and ionic-liquid-based hybrids. Their tailored architectures, catalytic performance, and mechanistic attributes are analyzed comprehensively. By incorporating multifunctional supports or rational structural modifications, these systems deliver superior desulfurization efficiency, product selectivity, and recyclability. Despite such progress, commercial deployment is hindered by the following outstanding issues: long-term catalyst durability, continuous-flow reactor design, and full life-cycle cost optimization. Future research should, therefore, focus on elucidating structure–performance relationships, translating batch protocols into robust continuous processes, and performing rigorous environmental and techno-economic assessments to accelerate the industrial adoption of PTC-enabled desulfurization. The olive oil sector constitutes a fundamental pillar in the Mediterranean region from socio-economic and cultural perspectives. Nonetheless, it produces significant amounts of waste, leading to numerous environmental issues. These waste streams contain valuable compounds that can be recovered and utilized as inputs for various applications. This study introduces a novel value chain for olive wastes, focused on extracting lignin from olive pomace by ionic liquids and polyphenols from olive mill wastewater, which are then incorporated as hybrid nanoparticles in the formulation of an innovative starch-based biofertilizer. This biofertilizer, obtained by using residual wastewater as a source of soluble nitrogen, acting at the same time as a plasticizer for the biopolymer, was demonstrated to surpass traditional NPK biofertilizers’ efficiency, allowing for root growth and foliage in drought conditions. In order to recognize the environmental impact due to its production and align it with the technical output, the circularity and environmental performance of the proposed system were innovatively evaluated through a combination of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the Material Circularity Indicator (MCI). LCA results indicated that the initial upcycling process was potentially characterized by significant hot spots, primarily related to energy consumption (>0.70 kWh/kg of water) during the early processing stages. As a result, the LCA score of this preliminary version of the biofertilizer may be higher than that of conventional commercial products, due to reliance on thermal processes for water removal and the substantial contribution (56%) of lignin/polyphenol precursors to the total LCA score. Replacing energy-intensive thermal treatments with more efficient alternatives represents a critical area for improvement. The MCI value of 0.84 indicates limited potential for further enhancement. This study investigates the application of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) as a decision-support mechanism for managing complex sustainability issues in industrial settings, specifically within the framework of circular economy principles. Focusing on a case from the brewery sector, developed under the EU ECOFACT initiative, this research evaluates ten distinct configurations for the must cooling process. These alternatives are assessed using environmental, economic, and technical criteria, drawing on data from life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC) methodologies. The findings indicate that selecting an optimal scenario involves balancing trade-offs among electricity and water consumption, operational efficiency, and overall environmental impacts. Notably, Scenario 3 emerges as the most balanced option, consistently demonstrating superior performance across the primary evaluation criteria. The use of AHP in this context proves valuable by introducing structure and transparency to a multifaceted decision-making process where quantitative metrics and sustainability objectives intersect. By integrating empirical industrial data with an established multi-criteria decision approach, this study highlights both the practical utility and existing limitations of conventional AHP, particularly its diminished ability to discriminate between alternatives when their scores are closely aligned. These insights suggest that hybrid or advanced AHP methodologies may be necessary to facilitate more nuanced decision-making for circular economy transitions in industrial environments. Full article

To address the limitations of conventional single-stack fuel cell hybrid systems using equivalent hydrogen consumption strategies, this study proposes a multi-stack energy management strategy incorporating fuel cell health degradation. Leveraging a fuel cell efficiency decay model and lithium-ion battery cycle life assessment, power distribution is reformulated as an equivalent hydrogen consumption optimization problem with stack degradation constraints. A hybrid Genetic Algorithm–Particle Swarm Optimization (GA-PSO) approach achieves global optimization. The experimental results demonstrate that compared with the Frequency Decoupling (FD) method, the GA-PSO strategy reduces hydrogen consumption by 7.03 g and operational costs by 4.78%; compared with the traditional Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, it reduces hydrogen consumption by 3.61 g per operational cycle and decreases operational costs by 2.66%. This strategy ensures stable operation of the marine power system while providing an economically viable solution for hybrid-powered vessels. Full article

This study systematically compares the environmental and economic performance of three wastewater treatment systems: constructed wetlands (CWs), microbial fuel cells (MFCs), and their integration (CW–MFC). Lab-scale units of each system were constructed using a multi-media matrix (gravel, zeolite, and granular activated carbon), composite native wetland species (Juncus effusus, Iris sp., and Typha angustifolia), carbon-based electrodes (graphite), and standard inoculum for CW and CW–MFC. The MFC system employed carbon-based electrodes and proton-exchange membrane. The experimental design included a parallel operation of all systems treating domestic wastewater under identical hydraulic and organic loading rates. Environmental impacts were quantified across construction and operational phases using life cycle assessment (LCA) with GaBi software 9.2, employing TRACI 2021 and ReCiPe 2016 methods, while techno-economic analysis (TEA) evaluated capital and operational costs. The key results indicate that CW demonstrates the lowest global warming potential (142.26 kg CO2-eq) due to its reliance on natural biological processes. The integrated CW–MFC system achieved enhanced pollutant removal (82.8%, 87.13%, 78.13%, and 90.3% for COD, NO3, TN, and TP) and bioenergy generation of 2.68 kWh, balancing environmental benefits with superior treatment efficiency. In contrast, the stand-alone MFC shows higher environmental burdens, primarily due to energy-intensive material requirements and fabrication processes. TEA results highlight CW as the most cost-effective solution (USD 627/m3), with CW–MFC emerging as a competitive alternative when considering environmental benefits and operational efficiencies (USD 718/m3). This study highlights the potential of hybrid systems, such as CW–MFC, to advance sustainable wastewater treatment technologies by minimizing environmental impacts and enhancing resource recovery, supporting their broader adoption in future water management strategies. Future research should focus on optimizing materials and energy use to improve scalability and feasibility. Full article

This study investigates the enhancement of condition and the extension of service life in architectural structures of shopping malls through the application of a hybrid methodological framework that integrates Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Service Life Planning (SLP). Thisresearch identifies key parameters related to physical performance, sustainability indicators, and functional characteristics of architectural systems that are subject to deterioration and shifting market conditions during the operational phase. The methodology encompasses a theoretical synthesis of LCA/SLP principles and advances in modeling for both the integrated design of new facilities and the monitoring and renewal of existing ones—from data collection and early-stage planning, through construction, use, and maintenance, to end-of-life phases. A second component of the model focuses on quantitative assessment and condition forecasting, based on Markov chain modeling, applied to the case study of the “Deva 1” shopping mall in Serbia. The results demonstrate the model’s ability to correlate physical condition indices with predictive service life scenarios.This study further contributes by integrating time-dependent impact categories, usage profiles, and planning parameters into a unified evaluation matrix, which can be applied to the development and improvement of systems aimed at enhancing the structural, functional, esthetic, and indirectly economic value of shopping mall buildings throughout their entire life cycle—from an architectural perspective. Background/Objectives: A critical part of the maize life cycle takes place during the summer, and due to climate change, its growth and development are increasingly exposed to the irregular and unpredictable effects of drought stress. Developing and using new cultivars with increased drought tolerance for farmers is the easiest and cheapest solution. One of the concepts to screen for drought tolerance is to expose germplasm to various growth scenarios (environments), expecting that random drought will occur in some of them. Methods: In the present study, thirty-two maize hybrids belonging to four FAO maturity groups were tested for grain yield at six locations over two consecutive years. In parallel, data of the basic meteorological elements such as air temperature, relative humidity and precipitation were collected and used to compute two indices, scPDSI (Self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index) and VPD (Vapor Pressure Deficit), that were assessed as indicators of drought (water deficit) severity during the vegetation period. Practical implementation of these indices was carried out indirectly by first analyzing yield data using a factor analytic model to detect latent environmental variables affecting yield and then correlating those latent variables with drought indices. Results: The first latent variable, which explained 47.97% of the total variability, was correlated with VPD (r = −0.58); the second latent variable explained 9.57% of the total variability and was correlated with scPDSI (r = −0.74). Furthermore, latent regression coefficients (i.e., genotypic sensitivities to latent environmental variables) were correlated with genotypic drought tolerance. Conclusions: This could be considered an indication that there were two different acting mechanisms in which drought affected yield. Full article

The aim of this article is to assess the sale structure impact of selected, popular brands of passenger vehicles on total CO2 emissions in the context of the energy transition in the transport sector. A detailed analysis was conducted of the projected sales of gasoline-, diesel-, hybrid-, as well as electric-powered vehicles over the years 2021–2028. Based on the available empirical data, a mathematical model was developed to estimate emissions over the entire life cycle of vehicles, taking into account the unit carbon footprint of each type of drivetrain and the expected number of vehicles sold. The results indicate a gradual decline in total CO2 emissions during the analyzed period, mainly due to the increasing share of alternative drivetrains. Despite the growth in electric vehicle sales, their impact on emission reductions remains limited due to the long lifespan of conventional vehicle fleets. The article concludes with a proposal to expand the LCA model to include regional, energy, and recycling components, which could help in formulating more effective climate policies. Full article

The accelerating global demand for sustainable and efficient energy storage has driven substantial interest in supercapacitor technology due to its superior power density, fast charge–discharge capability, and long cycle life. However, the low energy density of supercapacitors remains a key bottleneck, limiting their broader application. This review provides a comprehensive and focused overview of the latest breakthroughs in supercapacitor research, emphasizing strategies to overcome this limitation through advanced material engineering and device design. We explore cutting-edge developments in electrode materials, including carbon-based nanostructures, metal oxides, redox-active polymers, and emerging frameworks such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). These materials offer high surface area, tunable porosity, and enhanced conductivity, which collectively improve the electrochemical performance. Additionally, recent advances in electrolyte systems—ranging from aqueous to ionic liquids and organic electrolytes—are critically assessed for their role in expanding the operating voltage window and enhancing device stability. The review also highlights innovations in device architectures, such as hybrid, asymmetric, and flexible supercapacitor configurations, that contribute to the simultaneous improvement of energy and power densities. We identify persistent challenges in scaling up nanomaterial synthesis, maintaining long-term operational stability, and integrating materials into practical energy systems. By synthesizing these state-of-the-art advancements, this review outlines a roadmap for next-generation supercapacitors and presents novel perspectives on the synergistic integration of materials, electrolytes, and device engineering. These insights aim to guide future research toward realizing high-energy, high-efficiency, and scalable supercapacitor systems suitable for applications in electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and next-generation portable electronics. This study aimed to investigate the effect of a hybrid PR programme (outpatient followed by a digital intervention) on exercise tolerance, cardiorespiratory adaptations, functional capacity and quality of life outcomes in previously hospitalised COVID-19 survivors. Methods: Forty-two patients (age (mean ± SD): 57 ± 12 yrs) with excessive fatigue due to long COVID (FACIT score (26 ± 10) were allocated to PR (n = 27) or usual care (UC) (n = 15) 140 ± 75 days from hospital discharge. PR consisted of 8 outpatient sessions (twice weekly for 4 weeks) followed by 24 home-based sessions (3 times/week for 8 weeks). Patients in the UC group were instructed to be physically active. Exercise tolerance was assessed by cardiopulmonary cycling testing to the limit of tolerance. Results: Following the completion of the hybrid PR programme, peak work rate (WRpeak) and peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) were, respectively, improved in the PR group by 19 ± 10 Watt (p = 0.001) and by 2.4 ± 3.0 mL/kg/min (p = 0.001). Furthermore, in the PR group, the 6 min walk distance was increased by 72 ± 69 metres (p = 0.001). FACIT and mMRC scores were also improved in the PR group by 15 ± 10 (p = 0.001) and by 1.4 ± 1.0 (p = 0.001), respectively. In the UC group, only the mMRC score was improved by 0.7 ± 1.0 (p = 0.008). Conclusions: The application of a hybrid PR programme was beneficial in improving cardiorespiratory exercise fitness, functional capacity and quality of life in previously hospitalised COVID-19 survivors. Public transportation in cities is negatively affected by reliance on petroleum-based fuels, leading to emissions and poor air quality. Although the environmental evaluation of alternative buses in terms of sustainability has been extensively studied, the social dimensions have not received as much attention. In this regard, this research examines the social implications of alternative urban buses through life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods, including Eco-Indicator 99, Impact 2002+, and ReCiPe Endpoint. The results indicate that diesel buses significantly impact health, while hybrid, fuel cell, and electric buses can decrease emissions by 50%. These results underscore the necessity of zero-emission technologies to enhance urban air quality and promote better public health. Full article

The widespread presence of antibiotics in aquatic environments poses significant ecological and public health risks due to their persistence, antimicrobial activity, and contribution to resistance gene proliferation. This review systematically evaluated the advancements in antibiotic degradation using ionizing radiation (γ-rays and electron beam) from laboratory studies to practical applications. By using keywords such as “antibiotic degradation” and “ionizing irradiation OR gamma radiation OR electron beam,” 328 publications were retrieved from Web of Science, with China contributing 33% of the literature, and a number of global representative studies were selected for in-depth discussion. The analysis encompassed mechanistic insights into oxidative (•OH) and reductive (eaq) pathways, degradation kinetics influenced by absorbed dose (1–10 kGy), initial antibiotic concentration, pH, and matrix complexity. The results demonstrated ≥90% degradation efficiency for major antibiotic classes (macrolides, β-lactams, quinolones, tetracyclines, and sulfonamides), though mineralization remains suboptimal (<50% TOC removal). Synergistic integration with peroxymonosulfate (PMS), H2O2, or O3 enhances mineralization rates. This review revealed that ionizing radiation is a chemical-free, compatible, and highly efficient technology with effective antibiotic degradation potential. However, it still faces several challenges in practical applications, including incomplete mineralization, matrix complexity in real wastewater, and operating costs. Further improvements and optimization, such as hybrid system development (e.g., coupling electron beam with other conventional technologies, such as flocculation, membrane separation, anaerobic digestion, etc.), catalytic enhancement, and life-cycle assessments of this emerging technology would be helpful for promoting its practical environmental application. Fast patrol boats account for a large number among the numerous vessels used in naval fleets. Owing to their operational characteristics, which involve relatively high speeds, they contribute to emissions significantly. This study presents an optimized design concept for a diesel–battery hybrid electric propulsion system integrated into the general ship design process for fast patrol boats. The optimization design uses mixed-integer linear programming to determine the most eco-friendly shares ratio of battery and diesel usage while satisfying high-endurance operational scenarios. A shares ratio of 1.259 tons of diesel to 2.88 tons of batteries was identified as the most eco-friendly configuration capable of meeting a 200-nautical-mile operational scenario at a maximum speed of 35 knots for the selected case study. A quantitative comparison through a global warming potential (GWP) analysis was conducted between conventional diesel propulsion systems and the designed diesel–battery hybrid electric propulsion system, using a life-cycle assessment (LCA) standardized under the ISO framework. The analysis confirmed that the optimized hybrid propulsion system can achieve a GWP reduction of approximately 7–9% compared with conventional propulsion systems. Few studies have applied LCA in this field, and the application of batteries as hybrid secondary energy sources is viable and sustainable for high-endurance scenarios. Full article
