Mycosis is caused by, among other factors, filamentous fungi, ubiquitous molds belonging to Aspergillus spp. which are often opportunistic pathogens. Over 100 species of Aspergillus have been described. The most common species responsible for diseases in humans and animals are Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus niger, with Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus clavatus being somewhat rarer. Aspergillus causes a range of diseases, from localized colonization and hypersensitivity reactions, through chronic necrotizing infections, to rapidly progressing angioinvasion and dissemination, leading to death. Testicular mycosis is extremely rarely described in both humans and animals. No studies in the literature report a simultaneous occurrence of testicular tumors and fungal infection of the organ, so the aim of this paper was to describe, for the first time, a case of two independent testicular tumors coexisting with testicular mycosis. A histopathological examination was performed on the left testicle of a male dog, specifically a mixed-breed dog resembling a husky weighing 22 kg and with an age of 8 years. Bilateral orchidectomy was performed for medical reasons due to the altered outline of the left testicle, leading to scrotal deformation. The dog did not show any clinical signs of illness, and the testicles were not painful. The right testicle, according to the operating veterinarian, showed no macroscopic changes, so histopathological verification was not performed. Microscopic imaging of the changes clearly indicated the coexistence of a tumor process involving Leydig cells (Leydigoma, interstitial cell tumor, ICT), Sertoli cells (Sertolioma), and fungal infection of the testis. The case suggests the possibility of the coexistence of tumor processes, which may have impaired local immune response of the tissue, with an infectious, in this case fungal, inflammatory process. Based on the literature, this paper is the first report on the occurrence of two independent histotype testicular tumors and their associated mycosis. Full article

In the context of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the building sector, the reintegration of traditional earthen construction into modern architectural and renovation practices offers a sustainable alternative. To address the mechanical and water-resistance limitations of adobe bricks, the use of agricultural waste—such as rice husk—is increasingly being explored. This experimental study evaluates the effects of rice husk addition on the mechanical, hygrothermal, and acoustic properties of adobe bricks. Two soil types—one siliceous and one calcareous—were combined with 1, 2, and 3 wt% rice husk to produce bio-based earthen bricks. The influence of rice husk was found to depend strongly on the soils’ mineralogical and granulometric characteristics. The most significant improvements were in hygrothermal performance: at 3 wt%, thermal conductivity was reduced by up to 35% for calcareous soil and 20% for siliceous soil, indicating enhanced insulation. Specific heat capacity also increased with husk content, suggesting better thermal inertia. The moisture buffering capacity, already high in raw soils, is further improved due to increased surface porosity. Mechanically, rice husk incorporation had mixed effects: a modest increase in compressive strength was observed in siliceous soil at 1 wt%, while calcareous soil showed slight improvement at 3 wt%. Acoustic performance remained low across all samples, with minimal gains attributed to limited macro-porosity. These findings highlight the importance of soil composition in optimizing rice husk dosage and suggest promising potential for rice husk-stabilized adobe bricks, especially in thermally demanding environments. We classified common dog activities, such as sitting, standing, and lying down, which are crucial for monitoring the well-being of pets. To create a new model, we used convolutional neural networks (CNNs) on a Raspberry Pi platform and the InceptionV3 model, optimized on a dataset of Siberian Husky photos. The accuracy was 88% on a test set of 50 samples. In the developed model, TensorFlow Keras was used, while the OpenCV library was also used for system interaction with the Raspberry Pi and its Camera module. The model was effective for the image classification of dog behaviors in various environmental circumstances. The model substantially contributes to the development of pet welfare monitoring systems and improves the care for beloved animal companions. Full article

Recent advancements in image processing and machine-learning technologies have significantly improved vehicle monitoring and identification in road transportation systems. Vehicle classification (VC) is essential for effective monitoring and identification within large datasets. Detecting and classifying vehicles from surveillance videos into various categories is a complex challenge in current information acquisition and self-processing technology. In this paper, we implement a dual-phase procedure for vehicle selection by merging eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and the Multi-Objective Optimization Genetic Algorithm (Mob-GA) for VC in vehicle image datasets. In the initial phase, vehicle images are aligned using XGBoost to effectively eliminate insignificant images. In the final phase, the hybrid form of XGBoost and Mob-GA provides optimal vehicle classification with a pioneering attribute-selection technique applied by a prominent classifier on 10 publicly accessible vehicle datasets. Extensive experiments on publicly available large vehicle datasets have been conducted to demonstrate and compare the proposed approach. The experimental analysis was carried out using a myRIO FPGA board and HUSKY Lens for real-time measurements, achieving a faster execution time of 0.16 ns. The investigation results show that this hybrid algorithm offers improved evaluation measures compared to using XGBoost and Mob-GA individually for vehicle classification. Full article

Over the years, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has shown great potential in mapless autonomous robot navigation and path planning. These DRL methods rely on robots equipped with different light detection and range (LiDAR) sensors with a wide field of view (FOV) configuration to perceive their environment. These types of LiDAR sensors are expensive and are not suitable for small-scale applications. In this paper, we address the performance effect of the LiDAR sensor configuration in DRL models. Our focus is on avoiding static obstacles ahead. We propose a novel approach that determines an initial FOV by calculating an angle of view using the sensor’s width and the minimum safe distance required between the robot and the obstacle. The beams returned within the FOV, the robot’s velocities, the robot’s orientation to the goal point, and the distance to the goal point are used as the input state to generate new velocity values as the output action of the DRL. The cost function of collision avoidance and path planning is defined as the reward of the DRL model. To verify the performance of the proposed method, we adjusted the proposed FOV by ±10° giving a narrower and wider FOV. These new FOVs are trained to obtain collision avoidance and path planning DRL models to validate the proposed method. Our experimental setup shows that the LiDAR configuration with the computed angle of view as its FOV performs best with a success rate of 98% and a lower time complexity of 0.25 m/s. Additionally, using a Husky Robot, we demonstrate the model’s good performance and applicability in the real world. Full article

The management of the thermal environment to which dogs are exposed should be included in strategies to improve their welfare. An online questionnaire was administered to 624 owners of Siberian Husky dogs residing in Brazil, with the objective of assessing their perceptions regarding their dogs’ capacity to adapt to heat, and its association with the owners’ routine care. Owners who believed that dogs are low-heat-tolerant animals were more likely to report heat response behaviors from their dogs. Overall, owners reported walk with their dogs during early morning, late afternoon and nighttime. They also reported solar radiation as the primary criteria for determining the time to walk with their dogs. However, owners who reported walking with their dogs at noon mentioned time availability as their primary criteria. In conclusion, owners perceive Siberian Husky dogs living in Brazil as being poorly adapted to heat, and this perception appeared to influence their positive attitudes towards protecting their dogs from heat stress by choosing to walk them during times with less solar exposure. However, the lack of time for owners to walk with their dogs during cooler periods can still be a risk factor in exposing the animals to extreme hot conditions. Full article

Community-driven projects have characterized Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection in Indigenous communities in the Northwest Territories (NT) and Yukon (YT), Canada. These projects address concerns about the frequent diagnosis of Hp infection among community members and its relation to gastric cancer deaths, perceived to occur with alarming frequency in this region. Projects included breath-test screening for Hp infection, gastroscopy with gastric biopsies, and treatment to eliminate Hp infection. Previous project results showed a high prevalence of stomach pathologies associated with increased cancer risk among Hp-positive participants at baseline. This analysis describes changes in precancerous gastric pathologies in project participants who had gastroscopy before baseline treatment during 2008–2013 and again in 2017. Throughout the study period, the same pathologist graded Hp density, active gastritis, chronic gastritis, atrophic gastritis, and intestinal metaplasia using the updated Sydney System. Of 310 participants from three communities with baseline pathology data, 69 had follow-up pathology data. Relative to baseline, the prevalence of Hp infection and precancerous gastric pathology was substantially lower at follow-up; most participants who were Hp-positive at baseline and Hp-negative at follow-up had reduced severity of active, chronic, and/or atrophic gastritis at follow-up. Though follow-up numbers are small, these results yield evidence that successful Hp treatment has the potential to reduce the risk of gastric cancer in Arctic Indigenous communities. Full article

Social robots have the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with technology, providing a wide range of services and applications in various domains, such as healthcare, education, and entertainment. However, most existing social robotics platforms are operated based on embedded computers, which limits the robot’s capabilities to access advanced AI-based platforms available online and which are required for sophisticated physical human–robot interactions (such as Google Cloud AI, Microsoft Azure Machine Learning, IBM Watson, ChatGPT, etc.). In this research project, we introduce a cloud-based framework that utilizes the benefits of cloud computing and clustering to enhance the capabilities of social robots and overcome the limitations of current embedded platforms. The proposed framework was tested in different robots to assess the general feasibility of the solution, including a customized robot, “BuSaif”, and commercialized robots, “Husky”, “NAO”, and “Pepper”. Our findings suggest that the implementation of the proposed platform will result in more intelligent and autonomous social robots that can be utilized by a broader range of users, including those with less expertise. The present study introduces a novel methodology for augmenting the functionality of social robots, concurrently simplifying their utilization for non-experts. This approach has the potential to open up novel possibilities within the domain of social robotics. Full article

Competitions involving sled dogs are rapidly growing and body temperature assessment could represent a prompt and non-invasive method of screening for potential pathological conditions during or after activity. The aim of this clinical study was to evaluate if thermography is able to monitor the pre- and post-competition ocular and superficial body temperature variations during a sled dog competition. It subsequently compared the data relating to the ocular temperatures in different race types: mid-distance (30 km) and sprint (≤16 km). Results showed a statistically significant increase in post-competition ocular temperature of both eyes, regardless of the length of the race. The relative increase in the temperatures of the other body surfaces was lower than the expected values, probably due to the influence of environmental and subjective factors such as the type of coat of the Siberian Husky or subcutaneous fat. Infrared thermography has therefore proved to be useful method in sled dog competition conditions for screening superficial temperature variations, as the investigation is normally conducted in an external environment and often in demanding work conditions. Ehrlichiosis in dogs is an emerging vector borne rickettsial zoonotic disease of worldwide distribution. In general, three Ehrlichial species (Ehrlichia canis, E. ewingii, and E. chaffeensis) are involved in infecting dogs. Among them, E. canis is the well-known etiological pathogen affecting platelets, monocytes, and granulocytes. Dogs act as a reservoir, while the main vector responsible for disease transmission is Rhipicephalus sanguineus. However, in east Asian countries, Haemaphysalis longicornis is considered the principal vector for disease transmission. This disease affects multiple organs and systems and has three clinical manifestations, including acute, subclinical, and chronic. Definitive diagnosis involves visualization of morulae on cytology, detection of antibodies through an indirect immunofluorescence test (IFAT), and DNA amplification by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In canine ehrlichiosis, no predilection of age or sex is observed; however, Siberian Huskies and German Shepherds are more likely to develop severe clinical manifestations. Doxycycline, rifampicin, and minocycline are proven to be effective drugs against canine ehrlichiosis. This review is intended to describe a brief overview of Ehrlichia infection in dogs, its reported prevalence in east and south Asian countries, and the latest knowledge regarding chemotherapy and associated vectors responsible for the disease transmission. This manuscript also identifies the prevailing knowledge gaps which merit further attention by the scientific community. Full article

Studies assessing the association between hunger and psychological states have been conducted in laboratory settings, or limited to persons with eating disorders. In this study, 748 community-dwelling adults (56.4% women, 60.0 ± 9.3 years) completed the Ecological Momentary Assessment four times a day (08:00, 12:00, 16:00 and 20:00) for seven days. At each assessment, respondents indicated their current hunger level, food intake, and psychological states (sad, anxious, active, lively, distracted, anhedonic, angry, slow thinking and restless). Time-lagged associations assessing the effect of hunger on subsequent psychological states 4 h later and vice-versa were assessed. Hunger intensity increased subsequent active feeling (coefficient and 95% confidence interval: 0.029 (0.007; 0.051)) and lively feeling (0.019 (0.004; 0.034)) and decreased later slow thinking (−0.016 (−0.029; −0.003)). Previous eating increased later activity (0.116 (0.025; 0.208)). Feeling active (0.050 (0.036; 0.064)), lively (0.045 (0.023; 0.067)) and restless (0.040 (0.018; 0.063)) increased later hunger intensity, while distraction (−0.039 (−0.058; −0.019)) and slow thinking (−0.057 (−0.080; −0.034)) decreased it. No association was found between hunger, food intake and negative psychological states (sadness, anxiety and anger). Conclusions: Positive psychological states and hunger influence each other, while no association was found between hunger and negative psychological states. Full article

Congenital laryngeal paralysis (CLP) is an inherited disorder that affects the ability of the dog to exercise and precludes it from functioning as a working sled dog. Though CLP is known to occur in Alaskan sled dogs (ASDs) since 1986, the genetic mutation underlying the disease has not been reported. Using a genome-wide association study (GWAS), we identified a 708 kb region on CFA 18 harboring 226 SNPs to be significantly associated with CLP. The significant SNPs explained 47.06% of the heritability of CLP. We narrowed the region to 431 kb through autozygosity mapping and found 18 of the 20 cases to be homozygous for the risk haplotype. Whole genome sequencing of two cases and a control ASD, and comparison with the genome of 657 dogs from various breeds, confirmed the homozygous status of the risk haplotype to be unique to the CLP cases. Most of the dogs that were homozygous for the risk allele had blue eyes. Gene annotation and a gene-based association study showed that the risk haplotype encompasses genes implicated in developmental and neurodegenerative disorders. Pathway analysis showed enrichment of glycoproteins and glycosaminoglycans biosynthesis, which play a key role in repairing damaged nerves. In conclusion, our results suggest an important role for the identified candidate region in CLP. Full article

Positioning mobile systems with high accuracy is a prerequisite for intelligent autonomous behavior, both in industrial environments and in field robotics. This paper describes the setup of a robotic platform and its use for the evaluation of simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms. A configuration using a mobile robot Husky A200, and a LiDAR (light detection and ranging) sensor was used to implement the setup. For verification of the proposed setup, different scan matching methods for odometry determination in indoor and outdoor environments are tested. An assessment of the accuracy of the baseline 3D-SLAM system and the selected evaluation system is presented by comparing different scenarios and test situations. It was shown that the hdl_graph_slam in combination with the LiDAR OS1 and the scan matching algorithms FAST_GICP and FAST_VGICP achieves good mapping results with accuracies up to 2 cm. Full article

This paper presents a new synthetic dataset obtained from Gazebo simulations of an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) moving on different natural environments. To this end, a Husky mobile robot equipped with a tridimensional (3D) Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor, a stereo camera, a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver, an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and wheel tachometers has followed several paths using the Robot Operating System (ROS). Both points from LiDAR scans and pixels from camera images, have been automatically labeled into their corresponding object class. For this purpose, unique reflectivity values and flat colors have been assigned to each object present in the modeled environments. As a result, a public dataset, which also includes 3D pose ground-truth, is provided as ROS bag files and as human-readable data. Potential applications include supervised learning and benchmarking for UGV navigation on natural environments. Moreover, to allow researchers to easily modify the dataset or to directly use the simulations, the required code has also been released. Full article

In order to determine family functioning in the treatment of adults with bipolar disorders, guidelines are needed regarding the way family functioning may be assessed. The present systematic review aims to investigate how family functioning is assessed in this context. Following PRISMA guidelines, a total of 29 studies were reviewed. Results showed that although there was no consensual family functioning assessment across studies, 27 studies (93%) relied on self-report questionnaires, 12 studies (41%) relied on one family member as an informant (adult with bipolar disorder or other) and the adult considered was mostly a woman in the acute phase of bipolar I disorder. Significant heterogeneity was observed in the assessment of family functioning. Methodological considerations regarding the assessment of family functioning are discussed. Full article
