High-Mn steels are commonly fabricated by hot rolling and on-line cooling for cryogenic applications, because there exists an aging embrittlement zone in most high-Mn steels, and this shortcoming makes it difficult to optimize their mechanical properties by heat treatments. Hence, 0.6C-18Mn-0/3/5Al (in wt.%) steels were designed to investigate the effects of Al on their strength and toughness. The addition of 5 wt.% Al can increase yield strength from 357 to 461 MPa and the Charpy impact absorbed energy from 56 to 119 J. Although there is still a cryogenic aging embrittlement zone in each steel, we found that the addition of Al can narrow this brittle zone. Moreover, the absorbed energy is lowered by around 89%, 48%, and 40% for the 0Al, 3Al, and 5Al steels at −196 °C, respectively. Additionally, impact plastic deformation mechanisms were also revealed in the steels with a heat-treating temperature of 600 °C, revealing that the main deformation mechanism shifts from numerous partial dislocation slip to twinning plus strong planar slip as the addition of Al increases. Addressing the limitations of traditional fatigue life prediction methods, which rely on extensive experimental data and incur high costs, and given the current absence of studies that employ deformation inhomogeneity parameters to construct fatigue-indicator parameter (FIP) for predicting low-cycle fatigue (LCF) life of metals in hydrogen environments, this study firstly explores how hydrogen pre-charging influences the LCF behavior of hot-rolled ribbed bar grade 400 (HRB400) steel via experimental and crystal plasticity simulation, and focus on the relationship between the fatigue life and the evolution of microscale deformation inhomogeneity. The experimental results indicate that hydrogen charging causes alterations in cyclic hysteresis, an expansion of the elastic range of the stabilized hysteresis loop, and a significant reduction in LCF life. Secondly, a novel FIP was developed within the crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) framework to predict the LCF life of HRB400 steel under hydrogen influence. This FIP incorporates three internal variables: hydrogen embrittlement index, axial strain variation coefficient, and macroscopic stress ratio. These variables collectively account for the hydrogen charging effects and stress peak impacts on the microscale deformation inhomogeneity. The LCF life of hydrogen-charged HRB400 steel can be predicted using this new FIP. We performed fatigue testing under only one loading condition to measure the corresponding fatigue life and determine the FIP critical value. This helped predict fatigue life under different cyclic loading conditions for the same hydrogen-charged material. We compared the experimental data to validate the novel FIP to accurately predict the LCF life of hydrogen-charged HRB400 steel. The error between the predicted results and the measured results is limited to a factor of two. Full article

The objective of this study was to characterize austenitic stainless steel 310 produced by Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), addressing a gap in the literature regarding this alloy. Microstructural, chemical, and mechanical analyses were performed. Optical and electron microscopy revealed a predominantly columnar grain structure with characteristic tracks along the deposition direction. Point and mapping EDS analyses indicated a homogeneous distribution of iron, chromium, and nickel; however, point measurements suggested a possible underestimation of nickel, likely due to high relative error. Tensile tests demonstrated anisotropic mechanical behavior, with yield strength meeting standards at 45° and 90°, but lower at 0°. Ultimate tensile strength and elongation were below conventional requirements, with a maximum elongation of 15% at 90°. Additionally, the sample exhibited a total porosity of approximately 0.89%, which contributes to the reduction in mechanical properties, especially in the direction parallel to the deposition tracks. Overall, the WAAM-produced 310 stainless steel presented a microstructure similar to hot-rolled and annealed AISI 310 steel, but with distinctive features related to the additive process, such as mechanical anisotropy and microstructural directionality. Ferritic lightweight steels are an emerging class of low-density steels (LDSs) with promising mechanical properties. The study aimed to develop two ferritic lightweight steels with different Mn concentrations. Al was incorporated to achieve the lightweighting effect due to its relatively low atomic mass of substitutional solutions. The C concentration was kept at a minimum level to avoid the precipitation of carbides and the Mn addition was intended to increase solid solution strengthening. Thermodynamic calculations (Thermo-Calc) were employed to design the composition, analyze the phase constituents, and predict the phase transformation behavior. Microstructural investigation and hardness tests were conducted to experimentally verify the calculations. Both produced alloys exhibited a fully ferritic microstructure. Compared to industrially produced DP980 steel, a density reduction of about 7.2% and 8.3% was attained for the Fe-0.04C-5.5Al-1.6Mn-0.075Nb and Fe-0.04C-5.6Al-5.5Mn-0.08Nb steels, respectively. The steel with the higher Mn content showed increased hardness attributed to its solution strengthening effect. An increase in the hardness values was also measured with the progress in hot-rolling thickness reductions for both alloys. The alloying elements influenced the microstructural characteristics, phase transformation behavior, density, and hardness of the newly designed lightweight steels. Full article

This study investigates the hot deformation behaviour and microstructural evolution of two AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel variants: 0A (basic) and 1C (modified). These variants primarily differ in chemical composition, with 0A containing higher austenite-stabilizing elements (C, N) compared to 1C, which features lower interstitial content and slightly higher Si and Cr. This research aimed to optimize hot rolling conditions for enhanced forming properties. Uniaxial hot compression tests were conducted using a Gleeble thermo-mechanical system between 850 and 990 °C at a strain rate of 3.3 s−1, simulating industrial finishing mill conditions. Analysis of flow curves, coupled with detailed microstructural characterization using electron backscatter diffraction, revealed distinct dynamic restoration mechanisms influencing each material’s response. Thermodynamic simulations confirmed significant austenite formation in both materials within the tested temperature range, notably affecting their deformation behaviour despite their initial ferritic state. Material 0A consistently exhibited a strong tendency towards dynamic recrystallization (DRX) across a wider temperature range, particularly at 850 °C. DRX led to a microstructure with a high concentration of low-angle grain boundaries and sharp deformation textures, actively reorienting grains towards energetically favourable configurations. However, under this condition, DRX did not fully complete the recrystallization process. In contrast, material 1C showed greater activity of both dynamic recovery and DRX, leading to a much more advanced state of grain refinement and recrystallization compared to 0A. This indicates that the composition of 1C helps mitigate the strong influence of the deformation temperature on the crystallographic texture, leading to a weaker texture overall than 0A. Full article

The experimental tests needed for the estimation of the fatigue limit generally require extensive time and many specimens. A valid but not standardized alternative is the thermographic analysis of the self-heating phenomenon. The present work is aimed at using Infrared thermography to determine the fatigue limit in two kinds of Ti-6Al-4V samples obtained by hot rolling: (1) with the standard dog-bone shape (unnotched specimen) and (2) with two opposed semicircular notches at the sides (notched specimen). Uniaxial tensile experiments are performed on unnotched samples, and the surface temperature variation during loading is monitored. The stress corresponding to the end of the thermoelastic stage gives a rough indication of the fatigue limit. Then, fatigue tests at different sinusoidal loads are performed, and the thermographic signal is monitored and processed. The results obtained using lock-in thermography in dissipative mode, e.g., analyzing the second harmonic, showed a sudden change in slope when the applied stress exceeded a certain limit. This slope change is related to the fatigue limit. In addition, the ratio between the fatigue limits obtained for notched and unnotched specimens, e.g., the fatigue strength reduction factor, is consistent with literature values based on the selected geometry. The formation mechanism of black streak defects in hot-rolled steel sheets was investigated to address the influence of the process parameters on the surface quality during the production of 304 stainless steels. Macro-/microstructural characterization revealed that the defect regions contained necessary mold slag components (Ca, Si, Al, Mg, Na, K) which originated from the initial stage of solidification in the mold region of the continuous casting process, indicating obvious slag entrapment during continuous casting. On this basis, a three-dimensional coupled finite-element model for the molten steel flow–thermal characteristics was established to evaluate the effects of typical casting parameters using the determination of the critical slag entrapment velocity as the criterion. Numerical simulations demonstrated that the maximum surface velocity improved from 0.29 m/s to 0.37 m/s with a casting speed increasing from 1.0 m/min to 1.2 m/min, which intensified the meniscus turbulence. However, the increase in the port angle and the depth of the submerged entry nozzle (SEN) effectively reduced the maximum surface velocity to 0.238 m/s and 0.243 m/s, respectively, with a simultaneous improvement in the slag–steel interface temperature. Through MATLAB (version 2023b)-based reverse optimization combined with critical velocity analysis, the optimal mold slag properties were determined to be 2800 kg/m3 for the density, 4.756 × 10−6 m2/s for the kinematic viscosity, and 0.01 N/m for the interfacial tension. This systematic approach provides theoretical guidance for process optimization and slag design enhancement in industrial production. Full article

In the industrial practice of metal forming, the consistent and reasonable characterization of the material behavior under the coupling effect of strain, strain rate, and temperature on the material flow stress is very important for the design and optimization of process parameters. The purpose of this work was to establish an appropriate constitutive model to characterize the rheological behavior of a hot-formed steel plate (22MnB5 steel) produced through the TSCR (Thin Slab Casting and Rolling) process under practical deformation temperatures (150–250 °C) and strain rates (0.001–3000 s−1). Subsequently, the material flow behavior was modeled and predicted using the Johnson–Cook flow stress constitutive model. In this study, uniaxial tensile tests were conducted on 22MnB5 steel at room temperature under varying strain rates, along with elevated-temperature tensile tests at different strain rates, to obtain the engineering stress–strain curves and analyze the mechanical properties under various conditions. The results show that during room-temperature tensile testing within the strain rate range of 10−3 to 300 s−1, the 22MnB5 steel exhibited overall yield strength and tensile strength of approximately 1500 MPa, and uniform elongation and fracture elongation of about 7% and 12%, respectively. When the strain rate reached 1000–3000 s−1, the yield strength and tensile strength were approximately 2000 MPa, while the uniform elongation and fracture elongation were about 6% and 10%, respectively. Based on the experimental results, a modified Johnson–Cook constitutive model was developed and calibrated. Compared with the original model, the modified Johnson–Cook model exhibited a higher coefficient of determination (R2), indicating improved fitting accuracy. In addition, to predict the material’s damage behavior, three distinct specimen geometries were designed for quasi-static strain rate uniaxial tensile testing at ambient temperature. The Johnson–Cook failure criterion was implemented, with its constitutive parameters calibrated through integrated finite element analysis to establish the damage model. The determined damage parameters from this investigation can be effectively implemented in metal forming simulations, providing valuable predictive capabilities regarding workpiece material performance. This study investigates the fabrication and residual stress behavior of a 0.5 wt.% graphene-reinforced AA2195 aluminum matrix composite, developed for advanced aerospace structural applications. The composite was synthesized via squeeze casting, followed by a multi-pass hot rolling process and subsequent T8 heat treatment. The evolution of residual stress was systematically examined after each rolling pass and during thermal treatments. The successful incorporation of graphene into the matrix was confirmed through Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. Residual stress measurements after each pass revealed a progressive increase in compressive stress, reaching a maximum of −68 MPa after the fourth hot rolling pass. Prior to the fifth pass, a solution treatment at 530 °C was performed to dissolve coarse precipitates and relieve internal stresses. Cold rolling during the fifth pass reduced the compressive residual stress to −40 MPa, and subsequent artificial aging at 180 °C for 48 h further decreased it to −23 MPa due to recovery and stress relaxation mechanisms. Compared to the unreinforced AA2195 alloy in the T8 condition, which exhibited a tensile residual stress of +29 MPa, the graphene-reinforced composite in the same condition retained a compressive residual stress of −23 MPa. This represents a net improvement of 52 MPa, highlighting the composite’s superior capability to retain compressive residual stress. The presence of graphene significantly influenced the stress distribution by introducing thermal expansion mismatch and acting as a barrier to dislocation motion. Overall, the composite demonstrated enhanced residual stress characteristics, making it a promising candidate for lightweight, fatigue-resistant aerospace components. Full article

Thermomechanical processing has a significant impact on the porosity and mechanical properties of AISI 316L stainless steel produced by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). This work evaluated the effect of three heat treatment conditions: as-built (HT0), annealed at 650 °C for 3 h with air cooling (HT1), and annealed at 1050 °C for 1 h followed by water quenching (HT2), combined with cold and hot rolling at different strain levels. The most pronounced improvement was observed after 20% hot rolling followed by water quenching (HR + WQ), which reduced porosity to 0.05% and yielded the most spherical pores, with a circularity factor (fcircle) of 0.90 and an aspect ratio (AsR) of 1.57. At elevated temperatures, the matrix becomes more pliable, which promotes pore closure and helps reduce stress concentrations. On the other hand, applying heat treatment without causing deformation resulted in the pores growing and increasing porosity in the build direction. The fractography supported these findings, showing a transition from brittle to more ductile fracture surfaces. Heat treatment combined with plastic deformation effectively reduced internal defects and improved both structural integrity and strength. Full article

Rolling bearings are widely used in rotating machinery, and their health status is crucial for the safe operation of the equipment. The research on relevant fault diagnosis algorithms is a hot topic in the field. As a leading deep learning paradigm, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in bearing fault diagnosis. However, conventional CNNs encounter significant limitations in accurately identifying and classifying early-stage bearing faults, primarily due to two challenges: (1) the diagnostic accuracy is highly susceptible to variations in the input signal length and segmentation strategies and (2) incipient faults are characterized by extremely low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), which obscure fault signatures. To address these challenges, we propose a Waveform Intersection-CNN (WI-CNN)-based intelligent diagnosis method for early faults. This approach integrates Gramian Angular Field theory to construct high-resolution fault signatures, enabling the CNN-based diagnosis of incipient bearing faults. Validation using the Case Western Reserve University dataset demonstrates an average diagnostic accuracy exceeding 98%. Furthermore, we established a custom test platform to develop a hybrid diagnosis strategy for 10 distinct fault types. Comparative studies against two conventional CNN diagnostic methods confirm that our approach delivers superior diagnostic precision, a faster iteration speed, and enhanced algorithmic robustness. The empirical findings demonstrate that the model achieves an accuracy of 99.67% during training and 98.167% in the testing phase. Crucially, the proposed method offers exceptional simplicity, computational efficiency, and practical applicability, facilitating its widespread implementation. Full article

Aluminum and its alloy magnetron sputtering targets, owing to their superior electrical/thermal conductivity and robust substrate adhesion, serve as critical materials in advanced electronics and information technologies. It is known that the microstructure of the target, including grain uniformity and crystallographic texture, directly affects the sputtering performance and the quality of the deposited thin film. Despite extensive research efforts, the review paper focused on the microstructure of aluminum target materials is still absent. In that context, the recent progress on the Al alloy target is reviewed, focusing on grain refinement and texture control strategies. The roles of alloying elements, such as Si, Cu, and rare-earth Sc and Nd, are described first. The two conventional manufacturing techniques of fabricating Al targets, including melting and powder metallurgy, are introduced. Then, studies on grain refinement by thermomechanical processing routes (hot/cold rolling, annealing and forging) are summarized. Lastly, texture engineering through deformation and heat treatment protocols (unidirectional/multidirectional rolling, deformation thickness, and composite deformation modes) is reviewed. The effects of thermo-mechanical treatment and different annealing temperatures on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a nickel-based superalloy were investigated by metallographic microscope, scanning electron microscope, and mechanical properties measurements. The results demonstrated that the tensile strength and elongation of the hot-rolled samples were higher than those of the annealed ones. The ultimate engineering stress and engineering strain of the studied samples solid solution treated at 1175 °C for 4 h were 709 ± 19.8 MPa and 87.2 ± 1.4%, and the product of strength times elongation (PSE) was 61.8 GPa·%. These findings indicated that the thermo-mechanical treatment was an effective method to improve both the strength and the ductility of the nickel-based superalloy. Full article

Plastic forming in magnesium alloy sheet products is becoming a hot topic because of its potential in light-weight structural designs. Due to the special anisotropic and tension–compression asymmetrical properties of magnesium alloys, traditional modeling methods based on the von Mises yield criterion and using only uniaxial tensile properties for bending-dominated process simulations are not able to produce accurate predictions. In this study, two kinds of tensile tests (uniaxial and biaxial) and some compressive tests were performed along three material directions to obtain anisotropic and asymmetric properties, based on which the parameters of the Hill48 and Verma yield criteria were obtained. Then, the user subroutine VUMAT was developed, and the roll-forming process for magnesium alloys was simulated with the established anisotropic and asymmetric yield criteria. Finally, a roll-forming experiment on AZ31 magnesium alloy was performed. Compared with the experiments, it was found that roll-forming and springback predictions based on the Verma yield criterion had higher accuracy than those based on the von Mises and Hill48 yield criteria FEM models, which ignore anisotropy and asymmetry. This study provides an important FEM modeling idea that considers not only anisotropy but also asymmetry in the bending-dominated forming processes of magnesium alloys in which tension and compression exist simultaneously. In this work, we report the identification of a novel quaternary intermetallic phase (Al21GdCrTi) formed during the solidification of a novel Al-Gd-Cr-Ti alloy, which has not been previously documented in the literature to the best of our knowledge. The study also provides a detailed analysis of microstructure evolution, texture behavior, and the mechanical strengthening effect of rolling processes, along with neutron absorption performance. XRD analysis reveals that the intensity of (022), (113) planes of the as-hot-cold-rolled sample is higher than that of the as-cast due to the change in the direction of some grains in these planes during rolling. The results indicate that the studied alloys scatter neutrons about 100 times less than a nearly pure aluminum alloy. The hardness of the as-cast alloy increased from 36 to 53 HV after cold rolling and to 50 HV after hot rolling-cold rolling. Hot-cold-rolled alloy has a yield strength of 160 MPa and an ultimate tensile strength of 181 MPa, while maintaining an elongation of 11.3%. The studied alloys, containing 4.2 wt.% of the alloying elements 3.8Gd, 0.2Cr, and 0.2Ti (Al-3.8Gd-0.2Cr-0.2Ti), exhibited a yield strength 28 MPa higher than those containing 21 wt.% of the alloying elements 5Cu, 6Gd, and 8Bi (Al-5Cu-6Gd-8Bi). The studied alloys form the basis for the development of high-technology Al-Gd alloys for neutron shielding. Full article
