This study proposes a new air treatment system that integrates dehumidification, cooling, and water recovery using a Horizontal Air–Ground Heat Exchanger (HAGHE) combined with Peltier cells. The airflow generated by a fan flows through an HAGHE until it meets a septum on which Peltier cells are placed, and then separates into two distinct streams that lap the two surfaces of the Peltier cells: one stream passes through the cold surfaces, undergoing both sensible and latent cooling with dehumidification; the other stream passes through the hot surfaces, increasing its temperature. The two treated air streams may then pass through a mixing chamber, where they are combined in the appropriate proportions to achieve the desired air supply conditions and ensure thermal comfort in the indoor environment. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis was carried out to simulate the thermal interaction between the HAGHE and the surrounding soil. The simulation focused on a system installed under the subtropical climate conditions of Nairobi, Africa. The simulation results demonstrate that the HAGHE system is capable of reducing the air temperature by several degrees under typical summer conditions, with enhanced performance observed when the soil is moist. Condensation phenomena were triggered when the relative humidity of the inlet air exceeded 60%, contributing additional cooling through latent heat extraction. The proposed HAGHE–Peltier system can be easily powered by renewable energy sources and configured for stand-alone operation, making it particularly suitable for off-grid applications. Full article

How Nanofluids May Enhance Energy Efficiency and Carbon Footprint in Buildings?

Nanofluids are an innovative working medium in solar hot water installations (DHWs), thanks to their increased thermal conductivity and heat transfer coefficient. The aim of this work was to assess the effect of Al2O3 nanofluids in a water–ethylene glycol base (40:60%) and with the addition of Tween 80 surfactant (0.2 wt%) on thermal efficiency (ε) and exergy (ηex) in a plate heat exchanger at DHW flows of 3 and 12 L/min. The numerical NTU–ε model was used with dynamic updating of thermophysical properties of nanofluids and the solution of the ODE system using the ode45 method, and the validation was carried out against the literature data. The results showed that the nanofluids achieved ε ≈ 0.85 (vs. ε ≈ 0.87 for the base fluid) and ηex ≈ 0.72 (vs. ηex ≈ 0.74), with higher entropy generation. The addition of Tween 80 reduced the viscosity by about 10–15%, resulting in a slight increase of Re and h-factor; however, the impact on ε and ηex was marginal. The environmental analysis with an annual demand of Q = 3000 kWh/year and an emission factor of 0.2 kg CO2/kWh showed that for ε < 0.87 the nanofluids increased the emissions by ≈16 kg CO2/year, while at ε ≈ 0.92, a reduction of ≈5% was possible. This paper highlights the need to optimize nanofluid viscosity and exchanger geometry to maximize energy and environmental benefits. Nowadays, due to the growing problems of global warming, the analysis of energy efficiency and carbon footprint related to the functioning of a building seems to be crucial. Full article

A brick kiln was experimentally studied to measure the transient temperature of hot gases and the compressive strength of the bricks, using pine wood as fuel, in order to evaluate the thermal performance of the actual system. In addition, a transient combustion model based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to simulate the combustion of natural gas in the brick kiln as a hypothetical case, with the aim of investigating the potential benefits of fuel switching. The theoretical stoichiometric combustion of both pine wood and natural gas was employed to compare the mole fractions and the adiabatic flame temperature. Also, the transient hot gas temperature obtained from the experimental wood-fired kiln were compared with those from the simulated natural gas-fired kiln. Furthermore, numerical simulations were carried out to obtain the transient hot gas temperature and NOx emissions under stoichiometric, fuel-rich, and excess air conditions. The results of CO2 mole fractions from stoichiometric combustion demonstrate that natural gas may represent a cleaner alternative for use in brick kilns, due to a 44.08% reduction in emissions. Contour plots of transient hot gases temperature, velocity, and CO2 emission inside the kiln are presented. Moreover, the time-dependent emissions of CO2, H2O, and CO at the kiln outlet are shown. It can be concluded that the presence of CO mole fractions at the kiln outlet suggests that the transient combustion process could be further improved. The low firing efficiency of bricks and the thermal efficiency obtained are attributed to uneven temperatures distributions inside the kiln. Moreover, hot gas temperature and NOx emissions were found to be higher under stoichiometric conditions than under fuel-rich or excess of air conditions. Therefore, this work could be useful for improving the thermal–hydraulic and emissions performance of brick kilns, as well as for future kiln design improvements. Full article

The response of a temperature sensor in a gas stream depends on several heat transfer phenomena. The temperature of the thermocouple’s hot junction in the hot stream is lower than the measured temperature, which causes a measurement error. Compensation for this error and interpretation of the values indicated by the temperature sensor are possible by using a sensor dynamics model. Changes over time of the hot junction temperature as well as the entire thermocouple temperature in a stream are solved using the finite element method. Fluid flow and heat transfer equations are solved for a particular sensor geometry. This article presents a method for identifying a temperature sensor model using the results of numerical modeling of the response to temperature changes of the fluid stream, in which the input and output signal waveforms are recorded and then used by the estimator of a model coefficient. It is demonstrated that the dynamics of a bare-bead thermocouple sensor are well-described by a first-order transfer function. The proposed method was used to study the influence of stream velocity on the reaction of two sensors differing in the diameter of the wires, and the effect of radiative heat transfer on the model coefficients was examined by enabling and disabling selected models. The results obtained at several calculation points show the influence of the stream outflow velocity and selected geometric parameters on the value of the transfer function coefficients, i.e., transfer function gain and time constant. This study provides quantitative models of changes in sensor dynamics as functions of the coefficients. Full article

Objectives: This study examined the impact of a low-sugar flavored beverage on total fluid intake and hydration biomarkers during intermittent exercise in a hot environment among healthy children. Methods: Twenty-one children (11 girls, 8–10 y) completed a randomized, crossover study with two trials. Each trial involved three bouts of 10 min walking, 5 min rest, 10 min walking, and 35 min rest for a total of 3 h in a hot (29.9 ± 0.6 °C) and dry environment (26 ± 7% relative humidity). Walking intensity was 69 ± 7% of age-predicted maximum heart rate. Participants consumed either plain water (W) or a low-sugar flavored beverage (FB). Body weight, fluid intake, urine samples, and perceptual ratings were collected. Results: Total ad libitum fluid intake was significantly higher with the FB (946 ± 535 mL) than with W (531 ± 267 mL; p < 0.05). This difference was 128% higher for FB compared to W, with 19 out of the 21 children ingesting more fluids in FB versus W. Children rated the FB as more likable across all time points (p < 0.05). Net fluid balance was better with FB at 60, 70, 85, 135, and 145 min (p < 0.05), though not different at the 3 h mark. Urine volume was higher with FB (727 ± 291 mL) than with W (400 ± 293 mL; p < 0.05). Urine osmolality was significantly higher in the W trial at 120 and 180 min (p < 0.05). Conclusions: A flavored, low-sugar beverage enhanced ad libitum fluid intake and improved hydration markers compared to water during exercise in the heat, supporting its potential as a practical rehydration strategy for children. In recent years, packed-bed systems have emerged as an attractive design for thermal energy storage systems due to their high thermal efficiency and economic feasibility. As integral components of numerous large-scale applications systems, packed-bed thermal energy stores can be successfully paired with renewable energy and waste heat to improve energy efficiency. An analysis of the thermal performances of two packed beds (hot and cold) during six-hour charging and discharging cycles has been conducted in this paper using COMSOL Multiphysics software, utilizing the optimal design parameters that have been determined in previous studies, including porosity (0.2), particle diameters (4 mm) for porous media, air as a heat transfer fluid, magnesia as a storage medium, mass flow rate (13.7 kg/s), and aspect ratio (1). The performance has been evaluated during both the charging and discharging cycles, in terms of the system’s capacity factor, the energy stored, and the thermal power, in order to understand the system’s performance and draw operational recommendations. Based on the results, operating the hot/cold storage in the range of 20–80% of the full charge was found to be a suitable range for the packed-bed system, ensuring that the charging/discharging power remains within 80% of the maximum. Enhancing the thermal performance of building façades is vital for reducing energy demand in hot desert climates, where envelope heat gain increases cooling loads. This study investigates the integration of biomimicry into opaque ventilated façade (OVF) systems as a novel approach to reduce façade surface temperatures. Thirteen bio-inspired façade configurations, modeled after strategies observed in nature, were evaluated using computational fluid dynamics simulations to assess their effectiveness in increasing airflow and reducing inner skin surface temperatures. Results show that all proposed biomimetic solutions outperformed the baseline OVF in terms of thermal performance, with the wide top mound configuration achieving the greatest temperature reduction—up to 5.9 °C below the baseline OVF and 16.4 °C below an unventilated façade. The study introduces an innovative methodology that derives façade design parameters from nature and validates them through simulation. These findings highlight the potential of nature-based solutions to improve building envelope performance in extreme climates. Full article

Innovative approaches in hot forging, such as the use of floating dies, which aim to minimise burr formation by controlling material flow, require precise management of die geometry distortions. These distortions, primarily caused by thermal gradients, must be tightly controlled to prevent malfunctions during production. This study introduces a comprehensive thermal analysis framework that captures the complete forging cycle—from billet transfer and die closure to forging, spray-cooling, and lubrication. Two advanced heat transfer models were developed: a pressure- and lubrication-dependent contact heat transfer model and a spray-cooling model that simulates fluid dispersion over die surfaces. These models were implemented within the finite element software FORGE-NxT to evaluate the thermal behaviour of dies under realistic operating conditions. These two new models, contact and spray-cooling, implemented within a full-cycle thermal simulation and validated with industrial thermal imaging data, represent a novel contribution. The simulation results showed an average temperature deviation of just 5.8%, demonstrating the predictive reliability of this approach. This validated framework enables accurate estimation of thermal fields in the dies, and offers a practical tool for optimising process parameters, reducing burr formation, and extending die life. Moreover, its structure and methodology can be adapted to various hot forging applications where thermal control is critical to ensuring part quality and process efficiency. Full article

This study examines the labyrinth seal disc of an aero-engine, specifically analysing the radial deformation caused by centrifugal force and heat stress during operation. This distortion may lead to discrepancies in the performance attributes of the labyrinth seal and could potentially result in contact between the labyrinth seal tip and neighbouring components. A numerical analytical model incorporating the rotor and stator cavities, along with the labyrinth seal disc structure, has been established. The sealing integrity of a standard labyrinth seal disc’s flow channel is evaluated and studied at different clearances utilising the fluid–solid-thermal coupling method. The findings demonstrate that, after considering radial deformation, a cold gap of 0.5 mm in the conventional labyrinth structure leads to stabilisation of the final hot gap and flow rate, with no occurrence of tooth tip rubbing; however, both the gap value and flow rate show considerable variation relative to the cold state. When the cold gap is 0.3 mm, the labyrinth plate makes contact with the stator wall. To resolve the problem of tooth tip abrasion in the conventional design with a 0.3 mm cold gap, two improved configurations are proposed, and a stability study for each configuration is performed independently. The leakage and temperature rise attributes of the two upgraded configurations are markedly inferior to those of the classic configuration at a cold gap of 0.5 mm. At a cold gap of 0.3 mm, the two improved designs demonstrate no instances of tooth tip rubbing. Full article

The Aptian–Albian interval represents a significant cooling phase within the Cretaceous “hothouse” climate, marked by dynamic climatic fluctuations. High-resolution continental records are essential for reconstructing terrestrial climate and ecosystem evolution during this period. This study examines a lacustrine-dominated succession of the Shahezi Formation (Lishu Rift Depression, Songliao Basin, NE Asia) to access paleo-weathering intensity and paleoclimate variability between the Middle Aptian and Early Albian (c. 118.2–112.3 Ma). Multiple geochemical proxies, including the Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA), were applied within a sequence stratigraphic framework covering four stages of lake evolution. Our results indicate that a hot and humid subtropical climate predominated in the Lishu paleo-lake, punctuated by transient cooling and drying events. Periods of lake expansion corresponded to episodes of intense chemical weathering, while two distinct intervals of aridity and cooling coincided with phases of a reduced lake level and fan delta progradation. To address the impact of potassium enrichment on CIA values, we introduced a rectangular coordinate system on A(Al2O3)-CN(CaO* + Na2O)-K(K2O) ternary diagrams, enabling more accurate weathering trends and CIA corrections (CIAcorr). Uncertainties in CIA correction were evaluated by integrating geochemical and petrographic evidence from deposits affected by hydrothermal fluids and external potassium addition. Importantly, our results show that metasomatic potassium addition cannot be reliably inferred solely from deviations in A-CN-K diagrams or the presence of authigenic illite and altered plagioclase. Calculations of “excess K2O” and CIAcorr values should only be made when supported by robust geochemical and petrographic evidence for external potassium enrichment. This work advances lacustrine paleoclimate reconstruction methodology and highlights the need for careful interpretation of weathering proxies in complex sedimentary systems. Full article

In the operation of enhanced geothermal systems (EGSs), complex physical and chemical coupling processes, which are crucial for the efficient exploitation of geothermal energy, are involved. In situ studies of multi-fracture hot dry rocks (HDRs) face significant challenges, leading to a shortage of experimental data for verifying numerical simulations and supporting experimental techniques. In this paper, a multi-field coupling experimental simulation technique was designed for a multi-fracture geothermal reservoir. This technique enables the experimental investigation of the effects of fracture and reservoir characteristics, working fluid parameters, and wellbore arrangement on the multi-field coupling transport mechanism inside geothermal reservoirs during EGS operation. In addition, the practicability and reliability of the experimental technique were proved via a two-dimensional multi-fracture model. The experimental technique addresses a research gap in studying multi-fracture geothermal reservoirs and holds potential to promote substantial progress in geothermal resource exploitation. Gypsum and salt rocks have been proven to act as seals for abundant oil and gas reserves on a global scale, with significant potential for hydrocarbon preservation and evolution. Notably, the sedimentary dynamics of non-evaporitic gypsum in terrestrial half-graben basins remain underexplored, particularly regarding its genetic link to hydrocarbon accumulation in interbedded mudstones. This study is based on the Zhanhua Sag, in which thick-layered gypsum rocks with dark mudstone are deposited. The gypsum crystals show the intermittent deposition characteristics. The cumulative thickness of the gypsum-containing section reaches a maximum of over 110 m. The spatial distribution of gypsum thickness correlates strongly with the location of deep-seated faults. The strontium and sulfur isotopes of gypsum indicate deep hydrothermal fluids as mineral sources, and negative oxygen isotope excursions also suggest that gypsum layers precipitated in situ from hot brine. Total organic carbon and Rock-Eval data indicate that the deep-lake gypsum rock system has excellent hydrocarbon potential, especially in the mudstone interlayers. This study developed a depositional model of deep-lake gypsum rocks with thermal brine genesis in half-graben basins. The gypsum-bearing system is rich in mudstone interlayers. These gypsum–mudstone interbeds represent promising targets for shale oil exploration after the initial breakthrough during the extraction process. These insights provide a theoretical framework for understanding gypsum-related petroleum systems in half-graben basins across the globe, offering guidance for hydrocarbon exploration in analogous sedimentary environments. One of the challenges of our age is climate change and the ways in which it affects the Earth’s global ecosystem. To face the problems linked to such an issue, the international community has defined actions aimed at the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in several sectors, including the aviation industry, which has been requested to mitigate its environmental impact. Conventional aircraft propulsion systems depend on fossil fuels, significantly contributing to global carbon emissions. For this reason, innovative propulsion technologies are needed to reduce aviation’s impact on the environment. Electric propulsion has emerged as a promising solution among the several innovative technologies introduced to face climate change challenges. It offers, in fact, a pathway to more sustainable air travel by eliminating direct greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing energy efficiency. Unfortunately, integrating electric motors into aircraft is currently a big challenge, primarily due to thermal management-related issues. Efficient heat dissipation is crucial to maintain optimal performance, reliability, and safety of the electric motor, but aeronautic applications are highly demanding in terms of power, so ad hoc Thermal Management Systems (TMSs) must be developed. The present paper explores the design and optimization of a TMS tailored for a megawatt electric motor in aviation, suitable for regional aircraft (~80 pax). The proposed system relies on coolant oil injected through a hollow shaft and radial tubes to directly reach hot spots and ensure effective heat distribution inside the permanent magnet cavity. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate how advanced TMS strategies can enhance operational efficiency and extend the lifespan of electric motors for aeronautic applications. The effectiveness of the radial tube configuration is assessed by means of advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis with the aim of verifying that the proposed design is able to maintain system thermal stability and prevent its overheating. Corrosion Behaviors of Ni80A Alloy Valve in Marine Engine Within Ammonia-Rich Environment

Ammonia fuel is regarded as a promising zero-carbon alternative to diesel in next-generation marine engines. However, the high-temperature ammonia-rich environment poses significant corrosion challenges to hot-end components such as valves. This study investigates the corrosion behavior of Ni80A alloy marine valves under the coupled effects of a high temperature and ammonia atmosphere. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the service temperature of the valve and the ammonia concentration distribution inside the engine cylinder were identified. High-temperature corrosion experiments were conducted with a custom-designed setup. Results show that corrosion kinetics accelerated markedly with temperature: the initial corrosion rate at 800 °C was four times that at 500 °C, and the maximum corrosion layer thickness reached 37 μm—double that at lower temperatures. Microstructural analysis revealed a transition from a dense, defect-free corrosion layer at 500 °C to a non-uniform layer with coarse CrN particles and aggregated nitrides at 800 °C. Notably, surface hardness increased at both temperatures, peaking at 590 HV at 500 °C, while matrix hardness at 800 °C declined due to γ′ phase coarsening and grain growth. This work provides detailed insight into the temperature-dependent ammonia corrosion mechanisms of marine Ni-based alloy valves, offering essential data for material design and durability assessment in ammonia-fueled marine engines. Research and Performance Evaluation of Low-Damage Plugging and Anti-Collapse Water-Based Drilling Fluid Gel System Suitable for Coalbed Methane Drilling

Coalbed methane (CBM), a significant unconventional natural gas resource, holds a crucial position in China’s ongoing energy structure transformation. However, the inherent low permeability, high brittleness, and strong sensitivity of CBM reservoirs to drilling fluids often lead to severe formation damage during drilling operations, consequently impairing well productivity. To address these challenges, this study developed a novel low-damage, plugging, and anti-collapse water-based drilling fluid gel system (ACWD) specifically designed for coalbed methane drilling. Laboratory investigations demonstrate that the ACWD system exhibits superior overall performance. It exhibits stable rheological properties, with an initial API filtrate loss of 1.0 mL and a high-temperature, high-pressure (HTHP) filtrate loss of 4.4 mL after 16 h of hot rolling at 120 °C. It also demonstrates excellent static settling stability. The system effectively inhibits the hydration and swelling of clay and coal, significantly reducing the linear expansion of bentonite from 5.42 mm (in deionized water) to 1.05 mm, and achieving high shale rolling recovery rates (both exceeding 80%). Crucially, the ACWD system exhibits exceptional plugging performance, completely sealing simulated 400 µm fractures with zero filtrate loss at 5 MPa pressure. It also significantly reduces core damage, with an LS-C1 core damage rate of 7.73%, substantially lower than the 19.85% recorded for the control polymer system (LS-C2 core). Field application in the JX-1 well of the Ordos Basin further validated the system’s effectiveness in mitigating fluid loss, preventing wellbore instability, and enhancing drilling efficiency in complex coal formations. This study offers a promising, relatively environmentally friendly, and cost-effective drilling fluid solution for the safe and efficient development of coalbed methane resources. Full article
