Background: This study aimed to examine the effects of an 8-week plyometric training program on lower-limb explosive strength, jump performance, musculotendinous stiffness, reactive strength index (RSI), and multidirectional speed in elite Polish badminton players. Methods: Twenty-four athletes were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n = 15), which supplemented their regular badminton training with plyometric exercises, or a control group (n = 15), which continued standard technical training. Performance assessments included squat jump (SJ), countermovement jump (CMJ), single-leg jumps, sprint tests (5 m, 10 m), lateral movements, musculotendinous stiffness, and RSI measurements. Results: The experimental group showed statistically significant improvements in jump height, power output, stiffness, and 10 m sprint and lateral slide-step performance (p < 0.05), with large effect sizes. No significant changes were observed in the control group. Single-leg jump improvements suggested potential benefits for addressing lower-limb asymmetries. Conclusions: An 8-week plyometric intervention significantly enhanced lower-limb explosive performance and multidirectional movement capabilities in young badminton players. These findings support the integration of targeted plyometric training into regular training programs to optimize physical performance, improve movement efficiency, and potentially reduce injury risk in high-intensity racket sports. The coastal sandy land in northeast Hainan Province is typical for this land type, also exhibiting strong sand activity. This study is based on wind speed, wind direction, and sediment transport data obtained at a field meteorological station using an omnidirectional sand accumulation instrument from 2020 to 2024, studying the coastal aeolian environment and sediment transport distribution characteristics in the region. Its findings provide a theoretical basis for comprehensively analyzing the evolution of coastal aeolian landforms and the evaluation and control of coastal aeolian hazards. The research results show the following: (1) The annual average threshold wind velocity for sand movement in the study area is 6.84 m/s, and the wind speed frequency (frequency of occurrence) is 51.54%, dominated by easterly (NE, ENE) and southerly (S, SSE) winds. (2) The drift potential (DP) refers to the potential amount of sediment transported within a certain time and spatial range, and the annual drift potential (DP) and resultant drift potential (RDP) of Mulan Bay from 2020 to 2024 were 550.82 VU and 326.88 VU, respectively, indicating a high-energy wind environment. The yearly directional wind variability index (RDP/DP) was 0.59, classified as a medium ratio and indicating blunt bimodal wind conditions. The yearly resultant drift direction (RDD) was 249.45°, corresponding to a WSW direction, indicating that the sand in Mulan Bay is generally transported in the southwest direction. (3) When the measured data extracted from the sand accumulation instrument in the study area from 2020 to 2024 were used for statistical analysis, the results showed that the total sediment transport rate (the annual sediment transport of the observation section) in the study area was 110.87 kg/m·a, with the maximum sediment transport rate in the NE direction being 29.26 kg/m·a. These results suggest that when sand fixation systems are constructed for relevant infrastructure in the region, the construction direction of protective forests and other engineering measures should be perpendicular to the net direction of sand transport. During unmanned drilling operations, the velocity of drill cuttings serves as an important indicator of drilling conditions, which necessitates real-time and accurate measurements. To address challenges such as the small size of cuttings, weak feature representations, and complex motion trajectories, we propose a novel velocity measurement method integrating small-object detection and tracking. Specifically, we enhance the multi-scale feature fusion capability of the YOLOv11 detection head by incorporating a lightweight feature extraction module, Ghost Conv, and a feature-aligned fusion module, FA-Concat, resulting in an improved model named YOLOv11-Dd (drilling debris). Furthermore, considering the robustness of the ByteTrack algorithm in retaining low-confidence targets and handling occlusions, we integrate ByteTrack into the tracking phase to enhance tracking stability. A velocity estimation module is introduced to achieve high-precision measurement by mapping the pixel displacement of detection box centers across consecutive frames to physical space. To facilitate model training and performance evaluation, we establish a drill-cutting splash simulation dataset comprising 3787 images, covering a diverse range of ejection angles, velocities, and material types. The experimental results show that the YOLOv11-Dd model achieves a 4.65% improvement in mAP@80 over YOLOv11, reaching 76.04%. For mAP@75–95, it improves by 0.79%, reaching 41.73%. The proposed velocity estimation method achieves an average accuracy of 92.12% in speed measurement tasks, representing a 0.42% improvement compared to the original YOLOv11. Full article

Electric motors play a decisive role in electric vehicles by converting electrical energy into mechanical motion across various drivetrain components. However, failures in these motors can interrupt the motor function, with approximately 40% of these failures stemming from bearing issues. Key contributors to bearing degradation include shaft voltage, bearing current, and electric discharge material spalling current, especially in motors powered by inverters or variable frequency drives. This review explores the tribological and vibrational aspects of bearing currents, analyzing their mechanisms and influence on electric motor performance. It addresses the challenges faced by electric vehicles, such as high-speed operation, elevated temperatures, electrical conductivity, and energy efficiency. This study investigates the origins of bearing currents, damage linked to shaft voltage and electric discharge material spalling current, and the effects of lubricant properties on bearing functionality. Moreover, it covers various methods for measuring shaft voltage and bearing current, as well as strategies to alleviate the adverse impacts of bearing currents. This comprehensive analysis aims to shed light on the detrimental effects of bearing currents on the performance and lifespan of electric motors in electric vehicles, emphasizing the importance of tribological considerations for reliable operation and durability. The aim of this study is to address the engineering problem of bearing failure in inverter-fed EV motors by integrating electrical, tribological, and lubrication perspectives. The novelty lies in proposing a conceptual link between lubricant breakdown and damage morphology to guide mitigation strategies. The study tasks include literature review, analysis of bearing current mechanisms and diagnostics, and identification of technological trends. The findings provide insights into lubricant properties and diagnostic approaches that can support industrial solutions. Full article

For further investigation of the properties of the muon component in the core regions of extensive air showers (EASs), a new underground hodoscopic set-up with a total sensitive area of 22 m2 was built at the Tien Shan High Mountain Cosmic Ray Station. The hodoscope is based on a set of large-sized scintillation charged particle detectors with an output signal of analog type. The installation ensures a (5–8) GeV energy threshold of muon registration and a ∼104 dynamic range for the measurement of the density of muon flux. A program facility was designed that uses modern machine learning techniques for automated search for the typical scintillation pulse pattern in an oscillogram of a noisy analog signal at the output of the hodoscope detector. The program provides a ∼99% detection probability of useful signals, with a relative share of false positives below 1%, and has a sufficient operation speed for real-time analysis of incoming data. Complete verification of the hardware and software tools was performed under realistic operation conditions, and the results obtained demonstrate the correctness of the proposed method and its practical applicability to the investigation of the muon flux in EASs. In the course of the installation testing, a preliminary physical result was obtained concerning the rise of the multiplicity of muon particles around an EAS core in dependence on the primary EAS energy. Electric propulsion requires engines and transmission systems that run at higher speeds compared to combustion engines. For improving sustainability and environmental protection, biodegradable oils are suggested for the lubrication of high-speed gears that require particularly quick wetting of the steel surfaces. Newly developed promising candidates include short-chained polyalphaolefins. In the present work, a study on the applicability of such oil is presented and discussed with respect to different aging levels based on biodegradable properties. It focuses on the wettability of metallic surfaces investigated through time-resolved contact angle measurements. Carbon steels with different carbon contents and microstructures are selected as the most commonly used materials for gears. Effects of steel composition, surface roughness and oil oxidation are studied. The results show that in most cases, the application of biodegradable polyalphaolefins is not critical; however, a combination of steels with inhomogeneous microstructure, high surface roughness and aged oil can be critical because of limited wetting. The parameter identification of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) serves as a fundamental basis for achieving high-precision motion control, state monitoring, and system development. Currently, AUV parameter identification typically relies on the complete motion information obtained from onboard sensors. However, in practical applications, it is often challenging to accurately measure key state variables such as velocity and angular velocity, resulting in incomplete measurement data that compromises identification accuracy and model reliability. This issue is particularly pronounced in vertical motion tasks involving low-speed, large pitch angles, and highly maneuverable conditions, where the strong coupling and nonlinear characteristics of underwater vehicles become more significant. Traditional hydrodynamic models based on full-state measurements often suffer from limited descriptive capability and difficulties in parameter estimation under such conditions. To address these challenges, this study investigates a parameter identification method for AUVs operating under vertical, large-amplitude maneuvers with constrained measurement information. A control autoregressive (CAR) model-based identification approach is derived, which requires only pitch angle, vertical velocity, and vertical position data, thereby reducing the dependence on complete state observations. To overcome the limitations of the conventional Recursive Least Squares (RLS) algorithm—namely, its slow convergence and low accuracy under rapidly changing conditions—a Multi-Innovation Least Squares (MILS) algorithm is proposed to enable the efficient estimation of nonlinear hydrodynamic characteristics in complex dynamic environments. The simulation and experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, demonstrating high identification accuracy and robustness in scenarios involving large pitch angles and rapid maneuvering. The results confirm that the combined use of the CAR model and MILS algorithm significantly enhances model adaptability and accuracy, providing a solid data foundation and theoretical support for the design of AUV control systems in complex operational environments. High-strength steel has high strength and low thermal conductivity, and its thin-walled parts are very susceptible to residual stress and deformation caused by cutting heat during the drilling process, which affects the machining accuracy and quality. High-strength steel thin-walled components are widely used in aerospace and other high-end sectors; however, systematic investigations into their temperature fields during drilling remain scarce, particularly regarding the evolution characteristics of the temperature field in thin-wall drilling and the quantitative relationship between drilling parameters and these temperature variations. This paper takes the thin-walled parts of AF1410 high-strength steel as the research object, designs a special fixture, and applies infrared thermography to measure the bottom surface temperature in the thin-walled drilling process in real time; this is carried out in order to study the characteristics of the temperature field during the thin-walled drilling process of high-strength steel, as well as the influence of the drilling dosage on the temperature field of the bottom surface. The experimental findings are as follows: in the process of thin-wall drilling of high-strength steel, the temperature field of the bottom surface of the workpiece shows an obvious temperature gradient distribution; before the formation of the drill cap, the highest temperature of the bottom surface of the workpiece is distributed in the central circular area corresponding to the extrusion of the transverse edge during the drilling process, and the highest temperature of the bottom surface can be approximated as the temperature of the extrusion friction zone between the top edge of the drill and the workpiece when the top edge of the drill bit drills to a position close to the bottom surface of the workpiece and increases with the increase in the drilling speed and the feed volume; during the process of drilling, the highest temperature of the bottom surface of the workpiece is approximated as the temperature of the top edge of the drill bit and the workpiece. The maximum temperature of the bottom surface of the workpiece in the drilling process increases nearly linearly with the drilling of the drill, and the slope of the maximum temperature increases nearly linearly with the increase in the drilling speed and feed, in which the influence of the feed on the slope of the maximum temperature increases is larger than that of the drilling speed. Difficult, extreme operating conditions of parabolic antennas under precipitation and sub-zero temperatures require the creation of effective heating systems. The purpose of the research is to develop a multilayer coating containing two metal-ceramic layers, epoxy composite layers, carbon fabric, and an outer layer of basalt fabric, which allows for effective heating of the antenna, and to study the properties of this coating. The multilayer coating was formed on an aluminum base that was subjected to abrasive jet processing. The first and second metal-ceramic layers, Al2O3 + 5% Al, which were applied by high-speed multi-chamber cumulative detonation spraying (CDS), respectively, provide maximum adhesion strength to the aluminum base and high adhesion strength to the third layer of the epoxy composite containing Al2O3. On this not-yet-polymerized layer of epoxy composite containing Al2O3, a layer of carbon fabric (impregnated with epoxy resin) was formed, which serves as a resistive heating element. On top of this carbon fabric, a layer of epoxy composite containing Cr2O3 and SiO2 was applied. Next, basalt fabric was applied to this still-not-yet-polymerized layer. Then, the resulting layered coating was compacted and dried. To study this multilayer coating, X-ray analysis, light and raster scanning microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used. The thickness of the coating layers and microhardness were measured on transverse microsections. The adhesion strength of the metal-ceramic coating layers to the aluminum base was determined by both bending testing and peeling using the adhesive method. It was established that CDS provides the formation of metal-ceramic layers with a maximum fraction of lamellae and a microhardness of 7900–10,520 MPa. In these metal-ceramic layers, a dispersed subgrain structure, a uniform distribution of nanoparticles, and a gradient-free level of dislocation density are observed. Such a structure prevents the formation of local concentrators of internal stresses, thereby increasing the level of dispersion and substructural strengthening of the metal-ceramic layers’ material. The formation of materials with a nanostructure increases their strength and crack resistance. The effectiveness of using aluminum, chromium, and silicon oxides as nanofillers in epoxy composite layers was demonstrated. The presence of structures near the surface of these nanofillers, which differ from the properties of the epoxy matrix in the coating, was established. Such zones, specifically the outer surface layers (OSL), significantly affect the properties of the epoxy composite. The results of industrial tests showed the high performance of the multilayer coating during antenna heating. Full article

Τhe Greek Seas are one of the most favorable locations for offshore wind energy development in the Mediterranean basin. In 2023, the Hellenic Hydrocarbons & Energy Resources Management Company SA published the draft National Offshore Wind Farm Development Programme (NDP-OWF), including the main pillars for the design, development, siting, installation, and exploitation of offshore wind farms, along with the Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment. The NDP-OWF is under assessment by the relevant authorities and is expected to be finally approved through a Joint Ministerial Decision. In this work, the preliminary offshore wind energy assessment of the Greek Seas is performed using the CERRA wind reanalysis data and in situ measurements from six offshore locations of the Greek Seas. The in situ measurements are used in order to assess the performance of the reanalysis datasets. The results reveal that CERRA is a reliable source for preliminary offshore wind energy assessment studies. Taking into consideration the potential offshore wind farm organized development areas (OWFODA) according to the NDP-OWF, the study of the local wind characteristics is performed. The local wind speed and wind power density are assessed, and the wind energy produced from each OWFODA is estimated based on three different capacity density settings. According to the balanced setting (capacity density of 5.0 MW/km2), the annual energy production will be 17.5 TWh, which is equivalent to 1509.1 ktoe. An analysis of the wind energy correlation, synergy, and complementarity between the OWFODA is also performed, and a high degree of wind energy synergy is identified, with a very low degree of complementarity. The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article

The optical floating zone technique was utilized to purify chromium and a single-phase chromium–silicon alloy in this work. The impurity content (carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen) can be reduced by decreasing the withdrawal speed of samples during the zone refining process, and the coarsening of grains was also observed. The effect of the impurities on mechanical properties was determined by hardness measurements at room temperature, and the hardness of both chromium and the chromium–silicon alloy decreased with lower concentrations of nitrogen and oxygen. In contrast, brittle material behavior is observed in samples prepared by arc melting process with higher concentrations of impurities. To use chromium–silicon alloys for future high-temperature applications, their brittle behavior must be improved, which can be achieved by reducing their carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen concentrations. This study investigates the capillary performance and wetting behavior of SLA (Stereolithography) 3D-printed porous structures, focusing on TPMS (triply periodic minimal surfaces)-Gyroid, Octet, Diamond, and Isotruss lattice designs. High-speed imaging was used to analyze droplet interactions, including penetration, spreading, and contact angles, with 16 μL water droplets dropping from 30 mm at 0.77 m/s. Results showed variable contact angles, with Isotruss and Octet having higher angles, while Diamond faced measurement challenges due to surface roughness. Numerical simulations of TPMS-Gyroid of 2 mm3 unit cells validated the experimental results, and Diamond, Octet, and Isotruss structures were simulated. Capillary performance was assessed through deionized (DI) water weight–time (w-t) measurements, identifying that the TPMS-Gyroid structure performed adequately. Structures with 4 mm3 unit cells had low capillary performance, excluding them from permeability testing, whereas smaller 2 mm3 structures demonstrated capillary effects but had printability and cleaning issues. Permeability results indicated that Octet performed best, followed by Isotruss, Diamond, and TPMS-Gyroid. Findings emphasize unit cell size, beam thickness, and droplet positioning as key factors in optimizing fluid dynamics for cooling, filtration, and fluid management. Full article

Traffic-related pollutants remain a challenging global issue, with significant policy implications. Within the European Union, Romania has the highest yearly societal cost per capita due to air pollution, which kills 29,000 Romanians every year, whereas the health and economic costs are also significant. In this context, municipal authorities in the country, particularly in high-density areas, should place a strong focus on mitigating air pollution. In particular, the capital city, Bucharest, ranks among the most congested cities in the world while registering the highest pollution index in Romania, with traffic pollution responsible for two-thirds of its air pollution. Consequently, studies that assess and model pollution trends are paramount to inform local policy-making processes and assist pollution-mitigation efforts. In this paper, a generalized additive modeling (GAM) framework is employed to model hourly concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), i.e., a relevant traffic-pollution proxy, at a busy urban traffic location in central Bucharest, Romania. All models are developed on a wide, fine-granularity dataset spanning January 2017–December 2022 and include extensive meteorological covariates. Model robustness is assured by switching between the generalized additive model (GAM) framework and the generalized additive mixed model (GAMM) framework when the residual autoregressive process needs to be specifically acknowledged. Results indicate that trend GAMs explain a large amount of the hourly variation in traffic pollution. Furthermore, meteorological factors contribute to increasing the models’ explanation power, with wind direction, relative humidity, and the interaction between wind speed and the atmospheric pressure emerging as important mitigators for NO2 concentrations in Bucharest. The results of this study can be valuable in assisting local authorities to take proactive measures for traffic pollution control in the capital city of Romania. Full article

Heat Transfer Performance and Influencing Factors of Waste Tires During Pyrolysis in a Horizontal Rotary Furnace

Pyrolysis technology currently serves as a significant method for recycling and reducing waste tires. In this paper, in order to improve the heat transfer efficiency during the pyrolysis of waste tires in a horizontal rotary furnace and the yield of pyrolysis oil, the effect laws of tire particle size, rotary furnace rotation speed, enhanced heat transfer materials, and adding spiral fins on heat transfer performance and pyrolysis product distribution were studied, respectively. The innovation lies in two aspects: first, aiming at the problems of slow heat transfer and low pyrolysis efficiency in horizontal rotary furnaces, we identified technical measures through experiments to enhance heat transfer, thereby accelerating pyrolysis and reducing energy consumption; second, with the goal of increasing high-value pyrolysis oil yield, we determined optimal operating parameters to improve economic and sustainability outcomes. The results showed that powdered particles of waste tires were heated more evenly during the pyrolysis process, which increased the overall heat transfer coefficient and the proportion of liquid products. When the rotational speed of the rotary pyrolysis furnace exceeded 2 rpm, there was sufficient contact between the material and the furnace wall, which was beneficial to the improvement of heat transfer performance. Adding heat transfer enhancement materials such as carborundum and white alundum could improve the heat transfer performance between the pyrolysis furnace and the material. Notably, a rotational speed of 3 rpm and carborundum were used as a heat transfer enhancement material with powdered waste tire particles during the pyrolysis process; the overall heat transfer coefficient was the highest, which was 16.89 W/(m2·K), and the proportion of pyrolysis oil products was 46.1%. When spiral fins were installed, the comprehensive heat transfer coefficient was increased from 12.78 W/(m2·K) to 16.32 W/(m2·K). The experimental results show that by increasing the speed of the pyrolysis furnace, adding heat transfer enhancing materials with high thermal conductivity to waste tires, and appropriate particle size, the heat transfer performance and pyrolysis rate can be improved, and energy consumption can be reduced.
