Accurate streamflow forecasting at fine temporal and spatial scales is essential to manage the diverse hydrological behaviors of individual catchments, particularly in rapidly responding mountainous regions. This study compares three forecasting models ARIMAX, LSTM, and HEC-HMS applied to the Posina River basin in northern Italy, using 13 years of hourly hydrological data. While recent literature promotes multi-basin LSTM training for generalization, we show that a well-configured single-basin LSTM, combined with a rolling forecast strategy, can achieve comparable accuracy under high-frequency, data-constrained conditions. The physically based HEC-HMS model, calibrated for continuous simulation, provides robust peak flow prediction but requires extensive parameter tuning. ARIMAX captures baseflows but underestimates sharp hydrological events. Evaluation through NSE, KGE, and MAE shows that both LSTM and HEC-HMS outperform ARIMAX, with LSTM offering a compelling balance between accuracy and ease of implementation. This study enhances our understanding of streamflow model behavior in small basins and demonstrates that LSTM networks, despite their simplified configuration, can be reliable tools for flood forecasting in localized Alpine catchments, where physical modeling is resource-intensive and regional data for multi-basin training are often unavailable. The rhythm of epileptiform activity occurs in various brain injuries (ischemia, stroke, concussion, mechanical damage, AD, PD). The epileptiform rhythm is accompanied by periodic Ca2+ pulses, which are necessary for the neurotransmitter release, the repair of damaged connections between neurons, and the growth of new projections. The duration and amplitude of these pulses depend on intracellular calcium-binding proteins. The effect of the synthetic fast calcium buffer BAPTA on the epileptiform activity of neurons induced by the GABA(A)-receptor inhibitor, bicuculline, was investigated in a 14-DIV rat hippocampal culture. In the epileptiform activity mode, neurons periodically synchronously generate action potential (AP) bursts in the form of paroxysmal depolarization shift (PDS) clusters and their corresponding high-amplitude Ca2+ pulses. Changes in the paroxysmal activity and Ca2+ pulses were recorded continuously for 10–11 min as BAPTA accumulated. It was shown that during BAPTA accumulation, transformation of neuronal patch activity occurs. Moreover, GABAergic and glutamatergic neurons respond differently to the presence of calcium buffer. Experiments were performed on two populations of neurons: a population of GABAergic neurons that responded selectively to ATPA, a calcium-permeable GluK1 kainate receptor agonist, and a population of glutamatergic neurons with a large amplitude of cluster depolarization (greater than −20 mV). These neurons made up the majority of neurons. In the population of GABAergic neurons, during BAPTA accumulation, the amplitude of PDS clusters decreases, which leads to a switch from the PDS mode to the classical burst mode with an increase in the electrical activity of the neuron. In glutamatergic neurons, the duration of PDS clusters decreased during BAPTA accumulation. However, the amplitude changed little. The data obtained showed that endogenous calcium-binding proteins play a significant role in switching the epileptiform rhythm to the recovery rhythm and perform a neuroprotective function by reducing the duration of impulses in excitatory neurons and the amplitude of impulses in inhibitory neurons. Background/Objectives: The increasing incidence rates of keratinocyte carcinoma (KC), particularly in fair-skinned populations, call for efforts to intensify health education of the general population in addressing this prevalent skin cancer type. As a preparatory step, this systematic review summarizes the published research on the knowledge and risk perception regarding KC among individuals without medical training. Methods: The review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024618851) and adheres to PRISMA guidelines. The databases PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycArticles, and PsycINFO were searched on 30 July 2024. Studies were eligible if knowledge and/or risk perception was assessed in lay people. Risk of bias (ROB) was assessed with the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist for prevalence studies. Comparable outcomes (e.g., awareness of terms for KC) were meta-analyzed. Results: Included reports (n = 17) were published between 1991 and 2024 with 16,728 individuals assessed. Awareness for the most common type of KC, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), was low (20.75% of respondents (95% confidence interval (CI): 15.24–27.61)), while more respondents were familiar with colloquial terms (60.9–72.8%). Meta-analysis indicated an underestimation of the frequency of KC, with only 7.21% (CI: 4.03–12.58) identifying BCC as the most common type of skin cancer. Furthermore, concern about developing KC as assessed in only two overlapping studies was reported by only 25–30% of respondents, indicating a significant gap in risk awareness and a lack of research on risk perception regarding KC. Conclusions: This review highlights the need for targeted health education interventions to improve knowledge and preventive behaviors regarding KC. Given the limitations of the included studies, characterized by high ROB, heterogeneity of results, and a lack of standardized assessment tools, further research is essential to enhance the understanding and awareness of KC in diverse populations. Recently, the usage of mobile phone-based games has increased due to the growing accessibility and convenience they provide. Using a descriptive-quantitative design, a disaster-based mobile application was developed in this study to enhance disaster literacy among the private senior high schools in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in Davao City, the Philippines. The developed application was provided together with survey questionnaires to 364 students randomly selected from different schools in Davao City usingF a simple random sampling method. The technology acceptance (TAM) model was used to explain how users accepted the new technology. The mobile application was designed with features in four disaster scenarios—fire, flood, volcano, and earthquake. The results revealed a high acceptance, with an average score of the perceived usefulness (PE) of 4.52, perceived ease of use (PEOU) of 4.44, and a behavioral intention (BI) of 4.12. The students accepted the application to enhance disaster risk reduction and management. Aligned with SDG 4 and SDG 11, the application can be used to equip users with the knowledge to respond to disasters and ensure community resilience. Full article

Using waste biomass as a raw material for the combined production of electricity and heat offers corresponding energy, economic, environmental and resource efficiency benefits. The study examines both the performance of a system for combined energy production based on the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) utilizing wood biomass and the market interest in its deployment within Bulgaria. Its objective is to propose a technically and economically viable solution for the recovery of waste biomass through the combined production of electricity and heat while simultaneously assessing the readiness of industrial and municipal sectors to adopt such systems. The cogeneration plant incorporates an ORC module enhanced with three additional economizers that capture residual heat from flue gases. Operating on 2 t/h of biomass, the system delivers 1156 kW of electric power and 3660 kW of thermal energy, recovering an additional 2664 kW of heat. The overall energy efficiency reaches 85%, with projected annual revenues exceeding EUR 600,000 and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of over 5800 t/yr. These indicators can be achieved through optimal installation and operation. When operating at a reduced load, however, the specific fuel consumption increases and the overall efficiency of the installation decreases. The marketing survey results indicate that 75% of respondents express interest in adopting such technologies, contingent upon the availability of financial incentives. The strongest demand is observed for systems with capacities up to 1000 kW. However, significant barriers remain, including high initial investment costs and uneven access to raw materials. The findings confirm that the developed system offers a technologically robust, environmentally efficient and market-relevant solution, aligned with the goals of energy independence, sustainability and the transition to a low-carbon economy. Event-based vision sensors (EVSs), often referred to as neuromorphic cameras, operate by responding to changes in brightness on a pixel-by-pixel basis. In contrast, traditional framing cameras employ some fixed sampling interval where integrated intensity is read off the entire focal plane at once. Similar to traditional cameras, EVSs can suffer loss of sensitivity through scenes with high intensity and dynamic clutter, reducing the ability to see points of interest through traditional event processing means. This paper describes a method to reduce the negative impacts of these types of EVS clutter and enable more robust target detection through the use of individual pixel frequency analysis, background suppression, and statistical filtering. Additionally, issues found in normal frequency analysis such as phase differences between sources, aliasing, and spectral leakage are less relevant in this method. The statistical filtering simply determines what pixels have significant frequency content after the background suppression instead of focusing on the actual frequencies in the scene. Initial testing on simulated data demonstrates a proof of concept for this method, which reduces artificial scene noise and enables improved target detection. Full article

Efficacy of NAMPT Inhibitors in Pancreatic Cancer After Stratification by MAP17 (PDZK1IP1) Levels

Background/Objectives: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is the seventh leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with its incidence rising each year. Despite its relatively low incidence, the aggressiveness of pancreatic cancer results in high mortality, with only 12% of patients surviving five years post-diagnosis. Surgical resection remains the only potentially curative treatment, but the tumor is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. The goal of this work is to identify vulnerabilities that can affect the efficacy of treatments and improve the efficacy of therapy. Methods: MAP17 overexpression in pancreatic cancer cell lines, RT-qPCR analysis, xenografts, in vitro and in vivo treatments, analysis of data from pancreatic tumors in transcriptomic patient databases. Results: We studied the prognostic and predictive value of MAP17 (PDZK1IP1) expression in pancreatic cancer, and we found that high MAP17 mRNA expression was associated with poor prognosis. In addition, single-cell analysis revealed that high MAP17 expression was present only in tumor cells. We investigated whether the response to various antitumor agents depended on MAP17 expression. In 2D culture, MAP17-expressing pancreatic cancer cells responded better to gemcitabine and 5-fluorouracil. However, in vivo xenograft tumors with MAP17 expression showed resistance to all treatments. Additionally, MAP17-expressing cells had a high NAD pool, which seems to be effectively depleted in vivo by NAMPT inhibitors, the primary enzyme for NAD biosynthesis. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that MAP17 expression could enhance the prognostic stratification of pancreatic cancer patients. Moreover, the coadministration of NAMPT inhibitors with current treatments may sensitize tumors with high MAP17 expression to chemotherapy and improve the efficacy of chemotherapy. Full article

Background: Cochlear implantation (CI) in pediatric patients with cochlear nerve deficiencies (CND) remains controversial due to a highly variable clinical population, lack of evidence-based guidelines, and mixed research findings. This study assessed current clinical perspectives and practices regarding CI candidacy in children with CND among hearing healthcare professionals in the USA. Methods: An anonymous 19-question online survey was distributed to CI clinicians nationwide. The survey assessed professional background, experience with aplasia and hypoplasia, and perspectives on CI versus auditory brainstem implant (ABI) candidacy, including imaging practices and outcome expectations. Both multiple-choice and open-ended responses were analyzed to identify trends and reasoning. Results: Seventy-two responses were analyzed. Most clinicians supported CI for hypoplasia (60.2%) and, to a lesser extent, for aplasia (41.7%), with audiologists more likely than neurotologists to favor CI. Respondents cited lower risk, accessibility, and the potential for benefit as reasons to attempt CI before ABI. However, many emphasized a case-by-case approach, incorporating imaging, electrophysiological testing, and family counseling. Only 22.2% considered structural factors the best predictors of CI success. Conclusions: Overall, hearing health professionals in the USA tend to favor CI as a first-line option, while acknowledging the limitations of current diagnostic tools and the importance of individualized, multidisciplinary decision-making in CI candidacy for children with CND. Findings reveal a high variability in clinical perspectives on CI implantation for pediatric aplasia and hypoplasia and a lack of clinical consensus, highlighting the need for more standardized assessment and imaging protocols to provide greater consistency across centers and enable the development of evidence-based guidelines. The problem associated with the manifestation of burnout syndrome is the subject of ongoing interest. In recent years, occupational burnout has been actively studied among professionals in the helping professions (teachers, physicians, social workers, psychologists, prison officers, etc.). However, the phenomenon has been poorly studied among freelancers. Therefore, the aim of this study is to fill this gap by determining the level of burnout syndrome among Bulgarian freelancers and investigate the influence of some work environment factors on professional burnout in the sample. A survey of 1138 freelancers was carried out using the Burnout Self-Assessment Questionnaire developed by Maslach and a questionnaire developed in-house to explore the factors of the occupational environment and ask questions related to socio-demographic factors. Hypotheses are tested using correlation analysis and structural equation modelling. The study reveals high levels of emotional exhaustion (40.91%, n = 484). High values on the scale of depersonalization were reported for 26,3% of the respondents (n = 311). Only 3.1% of the respondents (n = 37) had high values on the reduced personal accomplishment scale. The high levels of burnout among freelancers could be influenced by the specific characteristics of their work environment and the nature of their tasks. Full article

Mushroom production is a sustainable practice but requires improvements, such as in Lentinula edodes (Berk) Pegler cultivation, which has high water and labor demands. In this context, this study proposed replacing the traditional primordia induction method by submersion with a water injection method. Two primordia induction methods (submersion and injection) and two cultivation block formats were compared: rectangular cube (2 kg) and cylindrical (3.5 kg). The substrate, composed of eucalyptus sawdust (72%), wheat bran (12.5%), rice bran (12.5%), CaCO3 (1%), and CaSO4 (2%), was inoculated with strain LED 19/11 and incubated for 80 days at 26 ± 5 °C and 85 ± 15% humidity. After this period, the blocks were washed and transferred to the production environment. Fruiting was induced either by submersion or water injection, and production was evaluated over four harvest flushes. The 2 kg blocks had higher yields with submersion (16.62%), while the 3.5 kg blocks responded better to injection (13.01%), showing more homogeneous production. Increasing the substrate quantity contributes to greater harvest stability across production cycles. Water injections proved to be a viable alternative, reducing handling and facilitating large-scale production. The use of this technique demonstrates great importance in reducing water use and also the need for labor in cultivation. Full article

The increasing penetration of distributed renewable energy and the emergence of large-scale, flexible loads such as data centers pose significant challenges to the economic and secure operation of distribution systems. Traditional static pricing mechanisms are often inadequate, leading to inefficient resource dispatch and curtailment of renewable generation. To address these issues, this paper proposes a hierarchical pricing and dispatch framework modeled as a tri-level Stackelberg game that coordinates interactions among an upstream grid, a distribution system operator (DSO), and multiple virtual power plants (VPPs). At the upper level, the DSO acts as the leader, formulating dynamic time-varying purchase and sale prices to maximize its revenue based on upstream grid conditions. In response, at the lower level, each VPP acts as a follower, optimally scheduling its portfolio of distributed energy resources—including microturbines, energy storage, and interruptible loads—to minimize its operating costs under the announced tariffs. A key innovation is the integration of a schedulable data center within one VPP, which responds to a specially designed wind-linked incentive tariff by shifting computational workloads to periods of high renewable availability. The resulting high-dimensional bilevel optimization problem is solved using a Kriging-based surrogate methodology to ensure computational tractability. Simulation results verify that, compared to a static-pricing baseline, the proposed strategy increases DSO revenue by 18.9% and reduces total VPP operating costs by over 28%, demonstrating a robust framework for enhancing system-wide economic and operational efficiency. Salmonella is one of the main causes of food-borne illness worldwide. In most cases, Salmonella contamination can be traced back to food processing plants and/or to cross-contamination during food preparation. To avoid food-borne diseases, food processing plants use sanitizers and biocidal to reduce bacterial contaminants below acceptable levels. Despite these preventive actions, Salmonella can survive and consequently affect human health. This study investigates the adaptive capacity of the main Salmonella enterica serotypes isolated from the poultry production line, focusing on their replication, antimicrobial resistance, and biofilm formation under stressors such as acidic conditions, oxidative environment, and high osmolarity. Using growth curve analysis, crystal violet staining, and microscopy, we assessed replication, biofilm formation, and antimicrobial resistance under acidic, oxidative, and osmotic stress conditions. Disinfectant tolerance was evaluated by determining the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of sodium hypochlorite. The antibiotic resistance was assessed using the Kirby–Bauer method. The results indicate that, in general, acidic and osmotic stress reduce the growth of Salmonella. However, no significant differences were observed specifically for serotypes Infantis, Heidelberg, and Corvallis. The S. Infantis isolates were the strongest biofilm producers and showed the highest prevalence of multidrug resistance (71%). Interestingly, S. Infantis forming biofilms required up to 8-fold higher concentrations of sodium hypochlorite for eradication. Furthermore, osmotic and oxidative stress significantly induced biofilm production in industrial S. Infantis isolates compared to a reference strain. Understanding how Salmonella responds to industrial stressors is vital for designing strategies to control the proliferation of these highly adapted, multi-resistant pathogens. Full article

OKG-ConvGRU: A Domain Knowledge-Guided Remote Sensing Prediction Framework for Ocean Elements

Accurate prediction of key ocean elements (e.g., chlorophyll-a concentration, sea surface temperature, etc.) is imperative for maintaining marine ecological balance, responding to marine disaster pollution, and promoting the sustainable use of marine resources. Existing spatio-temporal prediction models primarily rely on either physical or data-driven approaches. Physical models are constrained by modeling complexity and parameterization errors, while data-driven models lack interpretability and depend on high-quality data. To address these challenges, this study proposes OKG-ConvGRU, a domain knowledge-guided remote sensing prediction framework for ocean elements. This framework integrates knowledge graphs with the ConvGRU network, leveraging prior knowledge from marine science to enhance the prediction performance of ocean elements in remotely sensed images. Firstly, we construct a spatio-temporal knowledge graph for ocean elements (OKG), followed by semantic embedding representation for its spatial and temporal dimensions. Subsequently, a cross-attention-based feature fusion module (CAFM) is designed to efficiently integrate spatio-temporal multimodal features. Finally, these fused features are incorporated into an enhanced ConvGRU network. For multi-step prediction, we adopt a Seq2Seq architecture combined with a multi-step rolling strategy. Prediction experiments for chlorophyll-a concentration in the eastern seas of China validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. The results show that, compared to baseline models, OKG-ConvGRU exhibits significant advantages in prediction accuracy, long-term stability, data utilization efficiency, and robustness. This study provides a scientific foundation and technical support for the precise monitoring and sustainable development of marine ecological environments. Full article

The Pivotal Role of Social Support, Self-Compassion and Self-Care in Predicting Physical and Mental Health Among Mothers of Young Children

Background: Mothers’ health significantly affects their well-being and that of their families. The early years of motherhood can be tough and impact mental health. This study examined the associations between mothers’ self-compassion, social support, and self-care behaviors and their physical and mental well-being. Methods: In August 2023, an online cross-sectional survey was conducted among 514 Israeli mothers with children under three. Mothers’ physical and mental health was assessed using SF12. Self-compassion was measured by the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS). Social support was evaluated through the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and self-care was assessed via the Pittsburgh Enjoyable Activities Test (PEAT). Results: Respondents’ average age was 31.5 years. Their self-reported physical health was relatively high, with a mean of 78.36 (SD = 21) on a 0–100 scale (n = 442). Mental health scores were lower, with a mean of 65.88 (SD = 20.28, n = 401). Perceived physical health was higher among Jewish mothers, younger mothers, and those with higher income levels. Additionally, greater social support and self-compassion correlated with better perceived physical health (Adj R2 = 0.11, p < 0.001). For mental health, higher scores were observed among Jewish mothers, younger mothers, and full-time employed mothers. Furthermore, higher social support, self-compassion, and self-care practices were associated with improved perceptions of mental health (Adj R2 = 0.39, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Promoting the well-being of mothers is crucial for their health, their children’s well-being, and the family unit. Health professionals working with mothers of young children should emphasize and help promote social support, self-compassion, and self-care activities. Full article

The habenula (Hb) of the epithalamus is formed of the medial (MHb) and lateral (LHb) parts. The improper functioning of the Hb may lead to depression and anxiety. The glutamate excitotoxicity is accompanied by astroglia reactivity and leads to the damage of nervous system structures. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of monosodium glutamate (MSG) administrated subcutaneously to rats in doses of 2 g/kg b.w. (I) and 4 g/kg b.w. (II), on astroglia in the MHb and LHb. Based on immunohistochemical reactions, the morphology, number of astrocytes immunoreactive for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP-IR) and S100β protein (S100β-IR), and their surface area, perimeter, number and length of processes, and cytoplasmic-nuclear immunostaining intensity for the studied proteins were assessed. In the MHb of animals receiving MSG, especially at a high dose, hypertrophy and an increase in the number of GFAP-IR and S100β-IR cells were demonstrated. In the LHb, only hypertrophy of processes in S100β-positive glia was observed. The immunostaining intensity increased in GFAP-IR glia and decreased in S100β-IR cells only in animals from group I. The results revealed that astroglia respond to MSG depending on its dose and the Hb part. This different behavior of glia may indicate their different sensitivity and resistance to damaging factors.
