Porous highly cross-linked polymer (PIP) was synthesized by a polycondensation reaction between hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene and piperazine. The obtained polymer has a surface area of 76.9 m2/g and a mesoporous structure. After carbonization, the obtained product (PIP-C) has a surface area of 177 m2/g. The obtained carbon product contained nitrogen and phosphorus heteroatoms, which leads to a higher specific capacitance (155.6 F/g) and catalytical activity in the electroreduction of oxygen (15.9 A/g). This work shows the possibility of the use of such porous phosphazene polymers as precursors for heteroatom-doped carbon materials, which might be used in electrochemical devices like electrodes for supercapacitors or metal-free electrocatalysts in fuel cells. The development of dental restorative materials with improved physical and mechanical properties is an important area of research. In this study, hexaallylaminocyclotriphosphazene (HAP) was used to modify dental composites. HAP is a compound with multiple carbon-carbon bonds that can react with methacrylic resins to form a copolymer. HAP was synthesized by reacting allylamine with hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene and characterized it using 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Molecular dynamics simulations using the MM2 force field showed that HAP has a nanosize (the diameter of a sphere eclosing the molecule is 1.3 nm), making it a suitable nanomodifier for dental composites. Using 3D printing, samples of dental methacrylic composites containing up to 10 wt. % HAP were prepared and their physicomechanical properties and antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria S. mutans were studied. As a result, it was established that the maximum flexural strength (115.1 ± 10.2 MPa) is achieved with a modifier content of 5 wt.% in the composite. The maximum value of inhibition of S. mutans growth in a liquid nutrient medium is achieved with a HAP content of 10 wt.% in the sample. Furthermore, with a HAP content of more than 5 wt.% in the composite, inhibition of biofilm on the material surface is observed. The resulting composite is proposed for use as dental crowns in restorative dentistry. Full article

Frequent crude oil spills during offshore oil and gas production and transportation have inflicted irreversible detrimental effects on both human activities and marine ecosystems; with particular risks of secondary disasters such as combustion and explosions. To address these challenges; advanced oil sorption technologies have been developed to overcome the inherent limitations of conventional remediation methods. In this study, a flame-retardant protective coating was fabricated on melamine sponge (MS) through precipitation polymerization of octa-aminopropyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP), endowing the MS@PPOS-PDMS-Si composite with exceptional char-forming capability. Secondary functional layer: By coupling the complementary physicochemical properties of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and SiO2 nanofibers, we enabled them to function jointly, achieving superior performance in the material systems; this conferred enhanced hydrophobicity and structural stability to the MS matrix. Characterization results demonstrated a progressive reduction in peak heat release rate (PHRR) from 137.66 kW/m2 to118.35 kW/m2, 91.92 kW/m2, and ultimately 46.23 kW/m2, accompanied by a decrease in total smoke production (TSP) from 1.62 m2 to 0.76 m2, indicating significant smoke suppression. Furthermore, the water contact angle (WCA) exhibited substantial improvement from 0° (superhydrophilic) to 140.7° (highly hydrophobic). Cyclic sorption–desorption testing revealed maintained oil–water separation efficiency exceeding 95% after 10 operational cycles. These findings position the MS@PPOS-PDMS-Si composite as a promising candidate for emergency oil spill response and marine pollution remediation applications, demonstrating superior performance in fire safety, environmental durability, and operational reusability. A series of new amide-based cyclotriphosphazene molecules consisting of different terminal groups (heptyl, decyl, and tetradecyl) at the periphery was successfully synthesized and characterized. The reaction began with the alkylation of methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate with 1-bromoheptane, 1-bromodecane, and 1-bromotetradecane, which was followed by reduction with potassium hydroxide to form a series of benzoic acid intermediates (1a–c). These intermediates underwent a reaction with thionyl chloride, followed by a reaction with 4-nitroaniline and triethylamine, to form para-substituted amides (2a–c). Further reduction of intermediates 2a–c with sodium sulfide hydrate produced the anilines 3a–c. Another reaction of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) with methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate yielded intermediate 4, which was then reduced with sodium hydroxide to form intermediate 5. Finally, chlorination of intermediate 5 with thionyl chloride, followed by a reaction with the aniline derivatives (3a–c), formed the hexasubstituted cyclotriphosphazene compounds 6a–c, with two amide linkages. The structures of these compounds were confirmed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and CHN elemental analysis. Full article

This research aims to develop fiber-reinforced composites (FRC) with enhanced fire resistance, which can be particularly useful for the transport industry (e.g., aviation, automotive, and train production). The fire retardation was achieved through epoxy matrix modification with hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCTP). First, the fire-resistant and mechanical properties of the epoxy matrix filled with different HCTP contents (4.8, 7.2, and 9.5 wt.%) were studied to select the most effective HCTP content for the impregnation of FRC. Then, glass, basalt, and carbon fiber fabrics were impregnated with epoxy filled with 7.2 wt.% of HCTP, and the fire resistance, flexural, and interlaminar fracture properties were studied to select the most effective HCTP-modified type of fiber reinforcement based on the test results. It was concluded that basalt fiber impregnated with epoxy filled with HCTP could be selected as the most effective reinforcement type, allowing excellent mechanical and flame-retardant properties. The structural versatility of polydichlorophosphazene derived from the inestimable possibilities to functionalize the two halogens, attached to each phosphazene main chain unit, attracted increasing attention in the last decade. This uncountable chemical derivatization is doubled by the amphiphilic roleplay demonstrated by polyphosphazenes containing twofold side-chained hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties. Thus, it is able to encapsulate specific bioactive molecules for various targeted nanomedicine applications. A new amphiphilic graft, polyphosphazenes (PPP/PEG–NH/Hys/MAB), was synthesized via the thermal ring-opening polymerization of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene, followed by a subsequent two-step substitution reaction of chlorine atoms with hydrophilic methoxypolyethylene glycol amine/histamine dihydrochloride adduct (PEG–NH2)/(Hys) and hydrophobic methyl-p-aminobenzoate (MAB), respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 1H and 31P-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) have been used to validate the expected architectural assembly of the copolymer. Docetaxel loaded micelles based on synthesized PPP/PEG–NH/Hys/MAB were designed by dialysis method. The micelles size was evaluated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The drug release profiles from the PPP/PEG–NH/Hys/MAB micelles were established. In vitro cytotoxicity tests of PPP/PEG–NH/Hys/MAB micelles loaded with Docetaxel revealed that designed polymeric micelles exhibited an increased cytotoxic effect on MCF-7 cells. Full article

In this work, we engineered a corn-straw-based bio-foam material under the inspiration of the intrinsic morphology of the corn stem. The explosion pretreatment was applied to obtain a fibrillated cellulose starting material rich in lignin. The in situ esterification of cellulose was adopted to improve the cross-linking network of the as-developed foam bio-material. The esterification of lignin was observed in the same procedure, which provides a better cross-linking interaction. The esterified corn-straw-derived bio-foam material showed excellent elastic resilience performance with an elastic recovery ratio of 83% and an elastic modulus of 20 kPa. Meanwhile, with surface modification by hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene-functionalized lignin as the flame retardant (Lig-HCCP), the as-obtained bio-foam material demonstrated quite a good flame retardancy (with 27.3% of the LOI), as well as a heat insulation property. The corn-straw-derived bio-foam material is prospected to be a potential substitution packaging material for widely used petroleum-derived products. This work provides a new value-added application of the abundant agricultural straw biomass resources. Full article

A novel multiple-ring molecule containing P and N, called HCCP-SA, was successfully prepared by the nucleophilic substitution reaction of salicylamide (SA) and hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP). Particularly, HCCP-SA possessed the dual functions of heat resistance and flame retardancy. The molecular structure of HCCP-SA was identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. HCCP-SA was bonded into the molecular chain of epoxy resin by the ring-opening curing reaction of epoxy resin, aiming to form a heat-resistant and flame-retardant composite (E-HS-x). In particular, the best-prepared E-HS-x composite with a 20 phr content of HCCP-SA (E-HS-20) presented excellent thermal stability, with an initial decomposition temperature of 267.94 °C and a max weight loss speed of only 0.95 mg·min−1. Moreover, E-HS-20 exhibited remarkable flame retardancy with a limiting oxygen index value of 27.1% and a V-2 rating in the UL94 flame retardancy test. The best-prepared E-HS-20 composite would be a suitable and potential candidate for heat-resistant and flame-retardant polymer materials. Full article

As a result of this research, it was established that the chlorine atom replacement rates in hexa-chlorocyclotriphosphazene by o-, m-, and p-methylanilines’ temperatures are crucial in determining which reaction is made. The speed of reaction practically does not affect the polarity of the synthesis solvent. For the formation of fully substituted o-, m-, and p-arilaminocyclotriphosphazenes, the reaction takes 5 h and is carried out in the diglyme at its boiling temperature. The structure of the synthesized AAP was confirmed by 31P and 1H NMR spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. By means of synchronous DSK and TGA, it is found that the synthesized AAP are crystalline and their thermal destruction has a stepped character. Thermal destruction is shown to be accompanied by the simultaneous removal of three aniline molecules from the AAP molecules. Conducted curing of epoxy resin DER-331 is carried out using the AAP as a curing agent. It has been established that due to steric difficulties, o- AAP does not interact with epoxy resin, unlike m- and p- AAP. The gel fraction in curing resin is measured, and the AAP relate to the stage processes of macromolecule formation. The result is that polymers based on DER-331 and m-, p-AAP have a gel fraction content up to 97 mass. %. These polymers have glass-transition temperatures 80 and 85 °C (m- and p-AAP-based, respectively) and demonstrate fire resistance to standard UL-94 of category V-0. Full article

The [V6O13]2− cluster is successfully immobilized to the polymeric framework of cyclomatrix polyphosphazene via the facile precipitation polymerization between the phenol group symmetrically modified [V6O13]2− and hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene. The structure of the as-prepared polyoxometalate-containing polyphosphazene (HCCP-V) was characterized by FT-IR, XPS, TGA, BET, as well as SEM and zeta potential. The presence of a rigid polyoxometalate cluster not only supports the porous structure of the polymeric framework but also provides an improved catalytic oxidation property. By using H2O2 as an oxidant, the as-prepared HCCP-V exhibited improved catalytic oxidation activity toward MPS, DBT, and CEES, which can achieve as high as 99% conversion. More importantly, the immobilization of POMs in the network of cyclomatrix polyphosphazene also provides better recyclability and stability of the heterogeneous catalyst. Full article

Organophosphazenes are of interest due to the combination of increased mechanical and thermal properties of polymer materials obtained with their use, however, they are characterized by a complex multi-stage synthesis. Moreover, the high viscosity of phosphazene-containing epoxy resins (PhER) makes their processing difficult. To simplify the synthesis of PhER, a one-step method was developed, and bisphenol F was chosen, which also provided a decrease in viscosity. In the current study, PhER were formed by a one-stage interaction of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCP) with bisphenol F isomers and epichlorohydrin in the presence of alkali, which was a mixture of epoxycyclophosphazenes (ECPh) with a functionality from 1 to 4 according to the results of MALDI-TOF analysis. Conventional epoxy resins based on bisphenol F, also formed during the process, showed high mechanical properties and glass transition temperature, and the reactivity of the obtained resins is similar to the base epoxy resins based on bisphenols A and F. Cured PhER had higher or the same mechanical properties compared to base epoxy resins based on bisphenol A and F, and a glass transition temperature comparable to base epoxy resins based on bisphenol F: glass transition temperature (Tg) up to 174.5 °C, tensile strength up to 74.5 MPa, tensile modulus up to 2050 MPa, tensile elongation at break up to 6.22%, flexural strength up to 146.6 MPa, flexural modulus up to 3630 MPa, flexural elongation at break up to 9.15%, and Izod impact strength up to 4.01 kJ/m2. Analysis of the composition of the obtained PhER was carried out by 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence elemental analysis, and contained up to 3.9% phosphorus and from 1.3% to 4.2% chlorine. The temperature profile of the viscosity of the resulting epoxy resins was determined, and the viscosity at 25 °C ranged from 20,000 to 450,000 Pa·s, depending on the ratio of reagents. The resins studied in this work can be cured with conventional curing agents and, with a low content of the phosphazene fraction, can act as modifiers for traditional epoxy resins, being compatible with them, to increase impact strength and elasticity while maintaining the rest of the main mechanical and processing properties, and can be used as a resin component for composite materials, adhesives, and paints. This work is devoted to the influence of phosphazene modifiers with different substituents on the curing process, thermal properties and flammability of benzoxazine resin. Novel catalysts with m-toluidine substituents were introduced. The catalytic activity of studied phosphazene compounds decreased in the row: hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCP) > tetra m-toluidine substituted phosphazene PN-mt (4) > hexa m-toluidine substituted phosphazene PN-mt (6) > hexaphenoxycyclotriphosphazene (HPP), where HPP is totally inactive. Two types of catalysis: basic and acid were proposed. A brief study of resulting properties of polybenzoxazines was presented. The addition of any studied modifier caused the decrease of glass transition temperature and thermal stability of polymers. The morphology of cured compositions was characterized by matrix-dispersion phase structure. All phosphazene containing polybenzoxazines demonstrated the improved flame resistance. Full article

Hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene is a ring compound consisting of an alternating phosphorus and nitrogen atom with two chlorine substituents attached to the phosphorus atom. The six chlorine atoms attached to this cyclo compound can be substituted with any different nucleophile that leads to changes in different chemical and physical properties. The major topics that were investigated in this research are the flame retardancy and dielectric properties of cyclotriphosphazene compounds. Cyclotriphosphazene compounds have high potential to act as a flame retardant, and this compound consists of two active elements attributed to its high flame-retardant character. This compound also demonstrated good ability as a flame retardant due to its low toxicity and less smoke produced. In addition, cyclotriphosphazene compounds were also investigated for their dielectric properties. Cyclotriphosphazene has high potential in the electrical field since it has dielectric properties that can be widely studied in the investigation of any potential application. This review presented literature studies focused on recent research development and studies in the field of cyclotriphosphazene that focused on synthesis, structural, flame retardancy, and dielectric properties of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene compounds.
