Optimization of Scanning Distance for Three Intraoral Scanners from Different Manufacturers: An In Vitro Accuracy Analysis

Background: Accuracy of optical impressions—defined by the intraoral scanner (IOS)’s trueness and precision per International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards—is influenced by both operator- and patient-related factors. Thus, this in vitro study aimed to (1) evaluate how scanning distance affects the accuracy of three different intraoral scanners (IOSs), and (2) identify the optimal scanning distance for each scanner. Methods: A maxillary arch model was obtained using polyvinyl siloxane impression material and poured with Type IV stone (Octa-rock royal®, Kulzer, Germany). Using three different types of IOSs—the trios 3 shape (TRIOS ® cart, 3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark); the Helios 500 (Eighteeth ®, Changzhou, China); and the Heron (3Disc ®, Herndon, VA 20170, USA)—ten scans were performed with each of the IOSs with five predetermined distances: 0 mm, 2.5 mm, 5 mm, 7.5 mm, and 10 mm. Spacers of varying heights were designed using Meshmixer version 3.5 (Autodesk, Inc., Mill Valley, CA, USA) and three-dimensional printed with the Form 2 printer (Formlabs, Somerville, MA, USA). The scanned data was processed using Geomagic Control X (Version 16.0.2.16496, 3D Systems, Wilsonville, OR, USA). Statistical analyses were performed using R Statistical Software (version 4.2.2), with significance set at α = 0.05. Results: Scanning distance significantly influenced scan accuracy for all three scanners. The 3Disc scanner (3Disc, Herndon, VA, USA) demonstrated the highest accuracy at a 7.5 mm distance, while both the Helios 500 (Eighteeth, Changzhou, China) and Trios 3 (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark) scanners achieved their best accuracy at a 5 mm distance, as indicated by the lowest root mean square (RMS) values (p < 0.05). Conclusions: To conclude, each IOS has an optimal scanning distance for best accuracy. Trios 3 (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark) outperformed the others in both trueness and precision. Future studies should examine these effects under full-arch and clinical conditions. Full article

Aim of the study: Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) are autoimmune diseases with a low prevalence and incidence worldwide. The levels of IFN-γ production by T-lymphocytes are related to disease activity. IFN-γ +874 T/A (rs2430561) has been shown to alter the serum levels of IFN-γ in different pathologies. The aim of this work is to explore the role of IFN-γ +874 T/A polymorphism in IIM. Methods: Using a specific sequence primer-polymerase chain reaction (SSP-PCR), the genotype was defined for normal healthy controls (HC) and patients with IIM. Markers of muscle damage, clinical features and treatment were collected from chart at the time of diagnosis and at recruitment point. All the data were analyzed by demographic characteristics, genotype, type of IIM, treatment, clinical features, and enzymatic levels. Results: No association was found comparing the genotypes or alleles of the IIM patients vs. HC. On the other hand, the TT genotype, previously described as a high producer of INF γ, showed higher levels of CPK at diagnosis in IIM patients, whereas females at diagnosis and males in remission presented higher levels. Conclusions: Even with a limited number of patients due to the rarity of this disease, no association was found between the disease development. Further, the TT genotype promoted muscle damage due to CPK elevation in the sera compared to the TA/AA genotype in patients with IIM. This could be genetic evidence of the impact of IFN-γ in the disease activity of IIM patients. A larger cohort is needed to confirm these results. Full article

Background: The UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) grassroots concussion guidance, May 2023, advised that all community-based sport-related concussions (SRCs) be diagnosed by a healthcare practitioner. This may require that general practitioners (GPs) diagnose and manage SRCs. Diagnosing SRCs in primary care settings in the United Kingdom (UK) presents significant challenges, primarily due to the lack of validated tools specifically designed for general practitioners (GPs). This scoping review aims to identify diagnostic and management tools for SRCs in grassroots sports and primary care settings. Aims: To identify tools that can be used by GPs to diagnose and manage concussions in primary care, both adult and paediatric populations. Design and Methods: A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScRs). Five databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar) were searched from 1946 to April 2025. Search terms included “concussion”, “primary care”, and “diagnosis”. Studies that discussed SRCs in community or primary care settings were included. Those that exclusively discussed secondary care and elite sports were excluded, as well as non-English studies. Two reviewers independently screened titles, abstracts, and full texts, with a third resolving any disagreements. Data were extracted into Microsoft Excel. Studies were assessed for quality using the Joanna Briggs critical appraisal tools and AGREE II checklist. Results: Of 727 studies, 12 met the inclusion criteria. Identified tools included Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 6 (SCAT6, 10–15 min, adolescent/adults), Sport Concussion Office Assessment Tool 6 (SCOAT6, 45–60 min, multidisciplinary), the Buffalo Concussion Physical Examination (BCPE, 5–6 min, adolescent-focused), and the Brain Injury Screening Tool (BIST, 6 min, ages 8+). As part of BCPE, a separate Telehealth version was developed for remote consultations. SCAT6 and SCOAT6 are designed for healthcare professionals, including GPs, but require additional training and time beyond typical UK consultation lengths (9.2 min). BIST and BCPE show promise but require UK validation. Conclusions: SCAT6, SCOAT6, BIST, and BCPE could enhance SRC care, but their feasibility in UK primary care requires adaptation (e.g., integration with GP IT systems and alignment with NICE guidelines). Further research is required to validate these tools and assess additional training needs. Full article

Cisgender sexual minority women (SMW, e.g., lesbian, queer) are at greater risk for poor mental and physical health compared to heterosexual women and face challenges when accessing health care. Previous research has largely focused on general sexual and gender minority barriers to health care, but more research is needed on the experiences of specific subgroups, including cisgender SMW. The current study qualitatively explored barriers and facilitators for cisgender SMW seeking health care. Twenty cisgender SMW aged 18–40 recruited using Meta advertisements and past participant lists completed 45 min semi-structured interviews and a brief survey. Thematic analysis conducted by two coders revealed a barrier theme with six subthemes, and a facilitator theme with seven subthemes. The barrier subthemes included discrimination, dominant culture centric, unsupportive socio-political environment, lack of patient-centered care, avoidance/concealment of sexual identity, and socio-economic challenges. The facilitator subthemes included supportive socio-political environment, advance identification of LGBTQ-affirming HCPs, patient-centered care, HCP identity similar to patient, social support, re-engagement with care after bad experiences, and socio-economic advantages. This study provides insight into the lived experiences of cisgender SMW that can help improve knowledge about health care disparities and inform health care interventions for this population. Recently, studies on accelerator-based boron neutron capture therapy (AB-BNCT) systems for cancer treatment have attracted the attention of researchers around the world. A neutron source can be obtained through the impingement of high-intensity proton beams emitted from the accelerator onto the target. This process would deposit a large amount of heat within this target. A thermal management system design is needed for AB-BNCT systems to prevent the degradation of the target due to thermal/mechanical loading. However, there are few studies that investigate this topic. In this paper, a cooling channel with a boiling heat transfer mechanism is numerically designed for thermal management in order to remove heat deposited in the Be target of the AB-BNCT system of Heron Neutron Medical Corp. A three-dimensional (3D) CFD methodology with a two-fluid model and an RPI wall boiling model is developed to investigate its availability. Two subcooled boiling experiments from previous works are adopted to validate the present CFD boiling model. This validated model can be confidently applied to assist in thermal management design for the AB-BNCT system. Based on the simulation results under the typical operating conditions of the AB-BNCT system set by Heron Neutron Medical Corp., the present coolant channel employing the boiling heat transfer mechanism can efficiently remove the heat deposited in the Be target, as well as maintain its integrity during long-term operation. In addition, compared with the channel with the single-phase convection traditionally designed for an AB-BNCT system, the boiling heat transfer mechanism can result in a lower peak temperature in the Be target and its corresponding deformation. A well-equipped legionary army prepared to lay siege to Pompeii. Among the weapons deployed along the northern stretch of the city walls were battering rams and mobile siege towers equipped with ballistae and scorpions. The impact marks from Republican-era stone balls and dart tips remain visible today between the Vesuvio and Ercolano Gates. In 2002 and 2016, the authors surveyed significant cavities using both direct and indirect methods. The collected data were then used to calculate the volume of fractured stone material. Given the hardness of the wall ashlars, ballistic parameters were quantified based on Hellenistic treatises. The results make it possible to derive dimensions for reconstructing artillery calibrated to the observed effects. Full article

Injury and Illness Surveillance in Para-Cycling: A Single-Centre One-Season Prospective Longitudinal Study

Introduction: Para-cycling is a competitive sport governed by the World Body for Cycling, Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), encompassing various cycling disciplines tailored to athletes with physical or visual impairments. This study aimed to prospectively monitor the incidence of injury and illness in Para cyclists during the 2024 Paralympic season. Methods: This prospective, observational study included ten professional Para cyclists (five male, five female) with impairments ranging from spinal cord-related, neuromuscular, and musculoskeletal conditions to vision impairment. The definitions of an ‘athlete health problem’, ‘injury’, and ‘illnesses’ followed the Para sport translation of the IOC consensus. Injury and illness data were collected weekly using the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre Questionnaire on Health Problems V2 (OSTRC-H2), with the addition of subjective markers of well-being and training load, between February 2024 and October 2024. All medical contacts for any injury or illness were logged in line with consensus statement recommendations. Results: The OSTRC-H2 questionnaire had a response rate of 76.5% (±12.2%, range 55–88%) across the 35 weeks. Athletes reported 7.36 (95% CI: 5.41–9.46) health problems per 365 days, with a medical attention rate of 5.56 (95% CI: 3.91–7.36) per 365 days. The overall injury rate was 1.94 per 365 athlete days (95% CI: 1.23–2.93), with a higher incidence in males (2.44, 95% CI: 1.53–3.67) than in females (1.51, 95% CI: 0.68–2.95). Conversely, illness rates were higher in females (5.40, 95% CI: 3.00–8.11) than in males (1.80, 95% CI: 0.60–3.30), with an overall illness rate of 3.60 per 365 days (95% CI: 2.29–5.10). Conclusions: This is the first study to present prospective injury and illness epidemiology rates in Para cyclists in combination with subjective well-being markers. The findings underscore the importance and feasibility of longitudinal health monitoring in Para cyclists, ensuring that both physical and mental health concerns are systematically tracked and addressed. This enables a proactive, multidisciplinary support system to respond effectively to fluctuations in well-being, particularly during periods of injury or illness. Full article

Background: Healthcare robotics needs context-aware policy-compliant reasoning to achieve safe human–agent collaboration. The current ontologies fail to provide healthcare-relevant information and flexible semantic enforcement systems. Methods: HERON represents a modular upper ontology which enables healthcare robotic systems to communicate and collaborate while ensuring safety during operations. The system enables domain-specific instantiations through SPARQL queries and SHACL-based constraint validation to perform context-driven logic. The system models robotic task interactions through simulated eldercare and diagnostic and surgical support scenarios which follow ethical and regulatory standards. Results: The validation tests demonstrated HERON’s capacity to enable safe and explainable autonomous operations in changing environments. The semantic constraints enforced proper eligibility for roles and privacy conditions and policy override functionality during agent task execution. The HERON system demonstrated compatibility with healthcare IT systems and demonstrated adaptability to the GDPR and other policy frameworks. Conclusions: The semantically rich framework of HERON establishes an interoperable foundation for healthcare robotics. The system architecture maintains an open design which enables HL7/FHIR standard integration and robotic middleware compatibility. HERON demonstrates superior healthcare-specific capabilities through its evaluation against SUMO HL7 and MIMO. The future research will focus on optimizing HERON for low-resource clinical environments while extending its applications to remote care emergency triage and adaptive human–robot collaboration. Coral reefs are experiencing increasing disturbance regimes. The influence these disturbances have on coral reef health is traditionally captured through field-based monitoring, representing a very small reef area (<1%). Satellite-based observations offer the ability to up-scale the spatial extent of monitoring efforts to larger reef areas, providing valuable insights into benthic trajectories through time. Our aim was to demonstrate a repeatable benthic habitat mapping approach integrating field and satellite data acquired annually over 21 years. With this dataset, we analyzed the trends in benthic composition for a shallow platform reef: Heron Reef, Australia. Annual benthic habitat maps were created for the period of 2002 to 2023, using a random forest classifier and object-based contextual editing, with annual in situ benthic data derived from geolocated photoquadrats and coincident high-spatial-resolution (2–5 m pixel size) multi-spectral satellite imagery. Field data that were not used for calibration were used to conduct accuracy assessments. The results demonstrated the capability of remote sensing to map the time series of benthic habitats with overall accuracies between 59 and 81%. We identified various ecological trajectories for the benthic types, such as decline and recovery, over time and space. These trajectories were derived from satellite data and compared with those from the field data. Remote sensing offered valuable insights at both reef and within-reef scales (i.e., geomorphic zones), complementing percentage cover data with precise surface area metrics. We demonstrated that monitoring benthic trajectories at the reef scale every 2 to 3 years effectively captured ecological trends, which is crucial for balancing resource allocation. Full article

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) induces immunological and autonomic imbalances. Exercise is a beneficial strategy for controlling IBD symptoms. We investigated the role of exercise on gastrointestinal (GI) motility changes and autonomic parameters in rats with ileitis. Rats were divided into control, ileitis, and exercise+ileitis groups. Ileitis was induced by TNBS (40 mM, intraileally). The exercise was swimming (1 h/day/4 weeks, 5%/bw). We assessed eating behaviour and oxidative stress. Body composition was assessed by bioimpedance. Autonomic balance and ECG parameters were measured by an electrocardiogram (ECG). Gastrointestinal motility was evaluated using the phenol red technique. In terms of body composition, total body water (TBW), body mass index (BMI), and fat-free mass (FFM) were higher in the ileitis group (216.80 ± 11.44 mL; 24.09 ± 2.15 g/cm2; 287.1 ± 14.66 g) (p < 0.05) vs. control rats (130.06 ± 28.23 mL; 16.38 ± 2.50 g/cm2; 193 ± 42.21 g) and exercise prevented (91.33 ± 12.33 mL; 11.73 ± 0.47 g/cm2; 133.8 ± 16.82 g) (p < 0.05) these changes. The exercise+ileitis group induces a reduction (p < 0.05) in gastric retention vs. ileitis and control (11.22 ± 1.91% vs. 35.17 ± 1.01% and 33.96 ± 1.77%). Ileitis increased intestinal retention in the duodenum (46.3 ± 2.56% vs. 24.98 ± 1.78%) and jejunum (34.22 ± 2.33% and 34.72 ± 2.83% vs. 47.32 ± 1.48%) (p < 0.05) and decreased intestinal retention in the ileum (p < 0.05) vs. the control group. Exercise+ileitis prevented (p < 0.05) changes in the duodenum (24.96 ± 1.66% vs. 46.3 ± 2.56%) and ileum (40.32 ± 3.75% vs. 14.08 ± 0.88%). Ileitis induces high MDA levels (p < 0.05) vs. control rats (4.43 ± 0.69 vs. 2.15 ± 0.12 nmol/mg of the tissue). This effect was prevented (p < 0.05) in the exercise+ileitis group (2.75 ± 0.21 vs. 4.43 ± 0.69 nmol/mg of the tissue). We observed a reduction in the LF component (p < 0.05) in the ileitis group vs. control group (31.32 ± 3.99 vs. 43.43 ± 3.86). The correlation indicated a stronger interrelationship between the autonomic parameter and intestinal retention in the ileum (r: 0.68; p: 0.04). The current study suggests intestinal ileitis alters GI motility and autonomic balance, and physical exercise can represent an essential non-pharmacological approach to IBD treatment. Full article

Hydrogen is a carbon-neutral fuel, so in theory it holds enormous potential. The use of hydrogen as a fuel for traditional internal combustion engines is becoming increasingly prominent. The authors now have the opportunity to retrofit a single-cylinder diesel research engine to an engine with hydrogen operation. For this reason, before that conversion, they prepared a comprehensive review study regarding hydrogen. Firstly, the study analyzes the most essential properties of hydrogen in terms of mixture formation and combustion compared to diesel. After that, it deals with indirect and direct injection, and what kind of combustion processes can occur. Since there is a possibility of pre-ignition, backfire, and knocking, the process can be dangerous in the case of indirect mixture formation, and so a short subsection is devoted to these uncontrolled combustion phenomena. The next subsection shows how important, in many ways, a special spark plug and ignition system are for hydrogen operation. The next part of the study provides a detailed presentation of the possible combustion chamber design for operation with hydrogen fuel. The last section reveals how many parameters can be focused on analyzing the hydrogen’s combustion process. The authors conclude that intake manifold injection and a Heron-like combustion chamber design, with a special spark plug with an ignition system, would be an appropriate solution. Full article

Objectives: To analyze the microscopic anatomy of the human uterine cervix in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) images obtained by microtomography (microCT). Methods: Human uterine cervixes surgically removed for benign gynecologic conditions were immersed in formalin and iodine solution for more than 72 h and images were acquired by microtomography. Results: In total, 10 cervical specimens were evaluated. The images provided by microCT allowed the study of the vaginal squamous epithelium, demonstrated microscopic 3D images of the metaplastic process between the exo and endocervix, and demonstrated the effects of metaplastic transformation on the thickness of the endocervical epithelium. Also reconstructed in 3D the endocervical folds and the repercussions of the metaplastic process on the endocervix, the changes of the endocervical epithelium along the cervical lumen and the relationship between the endocervix epithelium from the internal os and endometrium. In addition, 2D images could demonstrate the difference in tissue orientation of the collagen on the cervical stroma in a large field of view. Conclusions: MicroCT could demonstrate the microscopic anatomy of the human uterine cervix in 2D and 3D images, including the different stages of metaplastic process of the endocervical epithelium and reconstructed the endocervical lumen in 3D, preserving its natural anatomy without any mechanical effect for its dilatation. Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus of the family Flaviviridae. The association between ZIKV and microcephaly was first described in Brazil in 2015. The risk of vertical transmission occurs in pregnant women with or without symptoms, and the risk of malformation appears to be worse when infection occurs in the first and second trimesters of pregnancy. The rate of vertical transmission varies from 26 to 65%, and not all fetuses develop malformations. The incidence of malformations resulting from transmission is uncertain, ranging from 6–8% in the US to 40% in Brazil. Congenital ZIKV syndrome is a set of clinical manifestations that can affect the fetus of a mother infected with ZIKV. The manifestations are broad and nonspecific, including microcephaly, subcortical calcifications, ocular changes, congenital contractures, early hypertension, and pyramidal and extrapyramidal signs. Other findings such as growth restriction and fetal miscarriage/death may also occur. Our aim in this article is to review the literature on mosquito transmission, clinical presentation, serologic diagnosis, intrauterine transmission, pre- and postnatal imaging diagnostic findings, and short- and long-term follow-up. The Epidemiology of Injuries and Illnesses During SailGP Season 4: A Prospective Cohort Study

Introduction: Sailing is a high-intensity sport that demands a combination of physical strength, endurance, and technical skill. Sail Grand Prix (SailGP), inaugurated in 2019, epitomises a transformative approach to professional sailing. This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of injury and illness epidemiology among SailGP elite sailors, comparing injury and illness types and locations across different sailing activities. Methods: This prospective cohort study analysed injury and illness data from professional sailors throughout season 4 (2023/2024) of the professional sailing league. Data were collected on the number of hours spent in training, racing, and foiling, alongside injury reports, categorising injury types and locations. Incidence rates were calculated per 1000 h of sailing and 365 athlete days. Injuries were stratified by sex, position on the boat, and specific sailing activities to provide a detailed comparison. Results: A total of 100 sailors participated in the Sail GP 2024 season, accumulating 4919.84 h of recorded sailing activity: 2186.03 h in racing and 2733.80 h in training. The overall injury incidence rate was 9.96 per 1000 h of activity (95% CI: 7.17–12.75) and 7.43 per 365 athlete days (95% CI: 4.99–9.86). The injury rate was notably higher for foiling at 26.52 per 1000 h (95% CI: 19.09–33.94) compared to general sailing at 14.51 per 1000 h (95% CI: 10.44–18.57). Racing posed a greater injury risk than training, with an injury rate of 11.89 per 1000 h (95% CI: 7.77–16.46) compared to 8.41 per 1000 h for training (95% CI: 5.12–12.07). Grinders had the greatest rate of injuries at 3.86 (2.24, 5.69) injuries per 1000 h of sailing. The illness incidence rate was 5.14 per 1000 h (95% CI: 3.21–7.28), with respiratory illnesses being the most frequently reported. Conclusion: This study highlights the injury and illness risks amongst elite sailors in Sail GP. Males were at higher risk of injury, with the position of grinders being the most commonly injured. Ankle and knee injuries were the most prevalent. Future research should focus on developing sport-specific injury prevention programmes and examining long-term outcomes in sailors. Full article

Birds from Chalcolithic Settlements in the Plains of Bulgaria

A first attempt has been made to present a general composition of birds found in Chalcolithic settlements in the plains and lowlands of Bulgaria. Based on data from 21 settlements, 78 bird taxa (including 3 domestic forms) have been identified. Of these, 56 species have been identified to the species level. They constitute 13.4% (almost 1/7) of the 417 recorded bird species in the country. Aquatic birds (waterfowl, grebes, loons, herons, etc.) predominate (29 species). There are 12 species inhabiting woodland landscapes. Ten species are field/openland birds, and five are petrophilous species that inhabit rocky and stony habitats. Five species have disappeared as nesting in the country—bearded vulture, great bustard, common crane, colchic pheasant (native colchicus ssp.), and black grouse. These five species constitute 8.9% of the established composition of birds in the Chalcolithic settlements in the country. One extinct subspecies of the Eurasian coot has been described from one of these settlements. Full article
