This study presents a cost-effective, carbon-negative construction material for affordable housing, developed entirely from locally available agricultural wastes: rice husk ash, wood ash, and rice straw—materials often problematic to dispose of in many African regions. Rice husk ash provides high amorphous silica, acting as a strong pozzolanic agent. Wood ash contributes calcium oxide and alkalis to serve as a reactive binder, while rice straw functions as a lightweight organic filler, enhancing thermal insulation and indoor climate comfort. These materials undergo natural pozzolanic reactions with water, eliminating the need for Portland cement—a major global source of anthropogenic CO2 emissions (~900 kg CO2/ton cement). This process is inherently carbon-negative, not only avoiding emissions from cement production but also capturing atmospheric CO2 during lime carbonation in the hardening phase. Field trials in Kenya confirmed the composite’s sufficient structural strength for low-cost housing, with added benefits including termite resistance and suitability for unskilled laborers. In a collaboration between the University of Tartu and Kenyatta University, a semi-automatic mixing and casting system was developed, enabling fast, low-labor construction of full-scale houses. This innovation aligns with Kenya’s Big Four development agenda and supports sustainable rural development, post-disaster reconstruction, and climate mitigation through scalable, eco-friendly building solutions. A Cu-11.85Al-3.2Mn-0.1Ti shape memory alloy (SMA) with excellent superelasticity and shape memory effect was successfully fabricated via selective laser melting (SLM). Increasing the energy density enhanced grain refinement, achieving a 90% refinement rate compared to cast alloy, with an average width of ~0.15 µm. Refined martensite lowered transformation temperatures and increased thermal hysteresis. Nanoscale Cu2TiAl phases precipitated densely within the matrix, forming a dual strengthening network combining precipitation hardening and dislocation hardening. This mechanism yielded a room-temperature tensile strength of 829.07 MPa, with 6.38% fracture strain. At 200 °C, strength increased to 883.68 MPa, with 12.26% strain. The maximum tensile strength represents a nearly 30% improvement on existing laser-melted quaternary Cu-based SMAs. Full article

Cavitation-induced degradation of metallic materials presents a significant challenge for engineers and users of equipment operating with high-velocity fluids. For any metallic material, the mechanical strength and ductility characteristics are controlled by the mobility of dislocations and their interaction with other defects in the crystal lattice (such as dissolved foreign atoms, grain boundaries, phase separation surfaces, etc.). The increase in mechanical properties, and consequently the resistance to cavitation erosion, is possible through the application of heat treatments and cold plastic deformation processes. These factors induce a series of hardening mechanisms that create structural barriers limiting the mobility of dislocations. Cavitation tests involve exposing a specimen to repeated short-duration erosion cycles, followed by mass loss measurements and surface morphology examinations using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results obtained allow for a detailed study of the actual wear processes affecting the tested material and provide a solid foundation for understanding the degradation mechanism. The tested material is the Ni-based alloy INCONEL 625, subjected to stress-relief annealing heat treatment. Experiments were conducted using an ultrasonic vibratory device operating at a frequency of 20 kHz and an amplitude of 50 µm. Microstructural analyses showed that slip bands formed due to shock wave impacts serve as preferential sites for fatigue failure of the material. Material removal occurs along these slip bands, and microjets result in pits with sizes of several micrometers. Full article

The phase transformations of Crucible Particle Metallurgy (CPM) American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) M4 steel were studied during heat treatments using a CALPHAD-based method. The calculated results were compared with experimental observations. The optimum austenitizing temperature was determined to be about 1120 °C using Thermo-Calc software (2024b). Air-cooling and quenching treatments led to the formation of martensite with a hardness of 63–65 Rockwell C (HRC). The annealing treatment promoted the formation of the equilibrium ferrite and carbide phases and resulted in a hardness of 24 HRC. These findings with regard to phases and microconstituents are in agreement with the predictions derived from a Thermo-Calc-calculated time–temperature–transformation diagram at 1120 °C. Additionally, the primary carbides, MC and M6C, which formed prior to the heat treatment and had a minor influence on the quenched hardness. In contrast, the tempering process primarily led to the formation of fine secondary M6C carbides, which hardened the tempered martensite to 57 HRC. The present work demonstrates the application of a CALPHAD-based methodology to the design and microstructural analysis of tool steels. Full article

Predicting bending fractures in advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) is challenging due to complex microstructural behaviors and strain rate dependencies, particularly in industrial forming processes. Current models and standards primarily focus on quasi-static tension or slow bending speeds, leaving a gap in understanding the accelerated failure of AHSS without necking. In this study, direct bending experiments were conducted on dual-phase, complex-phase, and martensitic AHSS grades under varying bending speeds and radii. Since the bending crack is irrelevant to the load drop, surface crack evolution was measured using three-dimensional surface profile analysis. The results showed that accelerated bending significantly delayed crack initiation across all tested materials, with small-radius bending showing reduced strain localization due to strain rate hardening. Larger-radius bending benefited primarily from increased fracture strain. Full article

This article presents the results of studies of the degradation of the structure and mechanical properties of the core materials BN-350 fast neutron and research WWR-K reactors required to justify the service life extension of early-generation power and research reactors. Extending the service life of nuclear reactors is a modern problem, since most operating reactors are early-generation reactors that have exhausted their design lifespan. The possibility of extending the service life is largely determined by the condition of the structural materials of the nuclear facility, i.e., their residual resources must ensure safe operation of the reactor. For the SAV-1 alloy, the structural material of the WWR-K reactor, studies were conducted on witness samples which were in the active zone during its operation for 56 years. It was found that yield strength and tensile strength of the irradiated SAV-1 alloy decreased by 24–48%, and relative elongation decreased by ~2% compared to the unirradiated alloy. Inside the grains and along their boundaries, there were particles of secondary phases enriched with silicon, which is typical for aged aluminum alloys. For irradiated structural steels of power reactors, studied at 350–450 C, hardening and a damping nature of creep were revealed, caused by dispersion hardening and the Hall–Petch effect. Full article

Enhancing damage tolerance and wear resistance in Al–Si-based alloys under thermomechanical stress remains a key challenge in lightweight structural applications. This study investigates the microstructural and tribomechanical behavior of hypoeutectic Al–Si–(Cu)–Mg alloys with varying Cu:Mg ratios (3:1 vs. 1:3) under a T6 heat treatment. Alloys A and B, with identical Si contents but differing Cu and Mg levels, were subjected to multiscale microstructural characterization and mechanical and wear testing at 25 °C, 150 °C, and 250 °C. Alloy A (Cu-rich) exhibited refined α-Al(FeMn)Si phases and homogeneously dissolved Cu in the Al matrix, promoting lattice contraction and dislocation pinning. In contrast, Alloy B (Mg-rich) retained coarse Mg2Si and residual β-AlFeSi phases, which induced local stress concentrations and thermal instability. Under tribological testing, Alloy A showed slightly higher friction coefficients (0.38–0.43) but up to 26.4% lower wear rates across all temperatures. At 250 °C, Alloy B exhibited a 25.2% increase in the wear rate, accompanied by surface degradation such as delamination and spalling due to β-AlFeSi fragmentation and matrix softening. These results confirm that the Cu:Mg ratio critically influences the dominant hardening mechanism—the solid solution vs. precipitation—and determines the high-temperature performance. Alloy A maintained up to 14.1% higher tensile strength and 22.3% higher hardness, exhibiting greater shear resistance and interfacial stability. This work provides a compositionally guided framework for designing thermally durable Al–Si-based alloys with improved wear resistance under elevated temperature conditions. Full article

In this study, the process of electrolytic–plasma nitrocarburizing (EPNC) of 20-grade steel was investigated using various electrolytes and temperature regimes. At the first stage, optical spectral analysis of plasma emission during EPNC was carried out with spectral registration in the range of 275–850 nm, which allowed the identification of active components (Hα, CN, Fe I, O I lines, etc.) and the calculation of electron density. Additionally, the EPNC process was recorded using a high-speed camera (1500 frames per second), which made it possible to visually evaluate the dynamics of arc and glow discharges under varying electrolyte compositions. At the next stage, the influence of temperature regimes (650 °C, 750 °C, and 850 °C) on the formation of the hardened layer was studied. Using SEM and EDS methods, the morphology, phase zones, and the distribution of chemical elements were determined. Microhardness measurements along the depth and friction tests were carried out. It was found that a temperature of 750 °C provides the best balance between the uniformity of chemical composition, high microhardness (~800 HV), and a minimal coefficient of friction (~0.48). The obtained results confirm the potential of the selected EPNC regime for improving the performance characteristics of 20-grade steel. Full article

Electrochemical treatment by means of direct current (DC) is usually used as a measure for steel rebar corrosion protection, e.g., cathodic protection (CP), electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE), and re-alkalization (RA). However, the passage of an electrical charge through the pore system of concrete or mortar, coupled with the migration of ions, concentration changes, and resulting phase changes, may alter its chloride penetration resistance and, subsequently, the time until rebar corrosion activation. Porosity changes in hardened Portland cement mortar were studied by means of mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and alterations in the mortar surface phase composition were observed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD). In order to innovatively investigate the impact of DC treatment on the properties of the mortar–electrolyte interface, the cathode-facing mortar surface and the anode-facing mortar surface were analyzed separately. The corrosion of steel coupons embedded in DC-treated hardened mortar was monitored by means of the free corrosion potential (Eoc) and polarization resistance (Rp). The results showed that the DC treatment affected the surface porosity of the hardened Portland cement mortar at the nanoscale. Up to two-thirds of the small pores (0.001–0.01 µm) were replaced by medium-sized pores (0.01–0.06 µm), which may be significant for chloride ingress. Although the porosity and phase composition alterations were confirmed using other techniques (EIS and XRD), corrosion tests revealed that they did not significantly affect the time until the corrosion activation of the steel coupons in the mortar. An ultra-high-strength press-hardening steel (PHS) and a high-strength dual-phase steel (DP) were butt-joined by the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process, aiming to assess the effects of a high heat input welding process on the structure-property relationship and residual stress. The post-weld microstructure, the microhardness profile, the tensile behavior, and the experimentally obtained residual stresses (by x-ray diffraction) of the steels in dissimilar (PHS-DP) and similar (PHS-PHS, DP-DP) pair combinations have been analyzed. Results indicated that the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the dissimilar pair PHS-DP achieves a similar strength to the DP-DP joint, whereas the elongation was similar to that of the PHS-PHS weldment. The failure location of the tensile specimens was expected and systematically observed at the tempered and softer sub-critical heat-affected zone (SC-HAZ) in all welded conditions. Compressive residual stresses were consistently observed along the weldments in all specimens; the more accentuated negative RS were measured in the PHS joint attributed to the higher volume fraction of martensite; furthermore, the negative RS measured in the fusion zone (FZ) could be well correlated to weld restraint due to the sheet anchoring during the welding procedure, despite the presence of predominant ferrite and pearlite microstructures. Enhancing the Mechanical Performance of Dual-Phase Steel Through Multi-Axis Compression and Inter-Critical Annealing

This study examines the microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and wear behavior of medium-carbon dual-phase steel (AISI 1040) processed via Multi-Axis Compression (MAC). The DP steel was produced through inter-critical annealing at 745 °C, followed by MAC at 500 °C, resulting in a refined grain microstructure. Optical micrographs confirmed the presence of ferrite and martensite phases after annealing, with significant grain refinement observed following MAC. The average grain size decreased from 66 ± 4 μm to 18 ± 1 μm after nine MAC passes. Mechanical testing revealed substantial improvements in hardness (from 145 ± 9 HV to 298 ± 18 HV) and ultimate tensile strength (from 557 ± 33 MPa to 738 ± 44 MPa), attributed to strain hardening and the Hall–Petch effect. Fractographic analysis revealed a ductile failure mode in the annealed sample, while DP0 and DP9 exhibited a mixed fracture mode. Both DP0 and DP9 samples demonstrated superior wear resistance compared to the annealed sample. However, the DP9 sample exhibited slightly lower wear resistance than DP0, likely due to the fragmentation of martensite induced by high accumulated strain, which could act as crack initiation sites during sliding wear. Furthermore, wear resistance was significantly enhanced due to the combined effects of the DP structure and Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD). These findings highlight the potential of MAC processing for developing high-performance steels suitable for lightweight automotive applications. Full article

Body-centered cubic (BCC) refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) demonstrate significant potential as nuclear structural materials due to their exceptional mechanical properties and radiation tolerance. While Zr-containing RHEAs often develop multiphase structures through Zr-rich phase precipitation to enhance high-temperature mechanical performance, their irradiation response mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigated the microstructure evolution and radiation damage behavior in equiatomic MoNbTiVZr RHEA under Au-ion irradiation at fluences of 2 × 1015, 4 × 1015, and 1 × 1016 ions/cm2. Microstructural characterization revealed that the annealed alloy primarily consisted of near-equiatomic BCC1 phase, Zr-rich BCC2 phase, (Mo,V)Zr Laves phase, and ordered Zr2C phase. Post-irradiation analysis showed distinct defect evolution patterns: the BCC1 phase developed fine dislocation loops, while the Zr-rich BCC2 and Zr2C phases exhibited dislocation clusters and dense dislocation networks, respectively. BCC1 phase exhibited the most pronounced irradiation hardening corresponding to its fine, dispersed dislocation loop characteristics. Phase separation induced by Zr precipitation reduced chemical complexity, accelerating irradiation defect evolution. These findings demonstrated that Zr-rich phase precipitation detrimentally impacted the radiation resistance of BCC-structured RHEAs, suggesting that single-phase stability should be prioritized in nuclear material design. Aluminum, boron, and titanium microalloyed into high-strength low-alloy boron steel exhibit a complex interplay, competing for nitrogen, with titanium demonstrating the highest affinity, followed by boron and aluminum. This competition affects the formation and distribution of nitrides, impacting the microstructure and mechanical properties of the steel. Titanium protects boron from forming BN and facilitates the nucleation of acicular ferrite, enhancing toughness. The segregation of boron to grain boundaries, rather than its precipitation as boron nitride, promotes the formation of martensite and thus the through-hardenability. Aluminum nitride is critical in controlling grain size through a pronounced pinning effect. In this study, we employ energy- and wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and computer-aided particle analysis to analyze the phase content of 12 high-purity vacuum induction-melted samples. The primary objective of this study is to correctly describe the microstructural evolution in the Fe-Al-B-Ti-C-N system using the Calphad approach, with special emphasis on correctly predicting the dissolution temperatures of nitrides. A multicomponent database is constructed through the incorporation of available binary and ternary descriptions, employing the Calphad approach. The experimental findings regarding the solvus temperature of the involved nitrides are employed to validate the accuracy of the thermodynamic database. The findings offer a comprehensive understanding of the relative phase stabilities and the associated interplay among the involved elements Al, B, and Ti in the Fe-rich corner of the system. The type and size distribution of the stable nitrides in microalloyed steel have been demonstrated to exert a substantial influence on the properties of the material, thereby rendering accurate predictions of phase stabilities of considerable relevance. This study investigates the effect of electrolytic-plasma hardening (EPH) on the structure, phase composition, and tribological properties of the low-alloy steels 20Cr2Ni4A and 37Cr4 (1.7034) (EN). Hardening was carried out at a voltage of 320 V for 7 s in an aqueous solution containing 20% soda ash and 10% carbamide. Using scanning electron microscopy, the formation of a zonal structure with a hardened surface layer characterized by a needle-like martensitic morphology was revealed. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the presence of Fe, Fe3C, Fe2C, and FeO phases. Microhardness measurements confirmed a significant increase in the hardness of the hardened layer. Tribological tests showed a reduction in the coefficient of friction to 0.574 for 20Cr2Ni4A steel and to 0.424 for 37Cr4 (1.7034) (EN) steel, indicating an improvement in wear resistance after EPH. Phase Transformation Kinetics During Post-Weld Heat Treatment in Weldments of C-250 Maraging Steel

Welding of maraging steels leads to a microstructural gradient from base material (BM) to weld metal (WM). During post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) the precipitation and reverted austenite (γr) reactions will occur defining the mechanical properties. These reactions are affected by the microstructure and local chemical composition of each zone in the “as welded” (AW) condition. This effect has not been clearly described yet nor the evolution of the microstructure. The objective of this work was to analyse the phase transformations at the different zones of the welded joint during the PWHT to explain the microstructure obtained at each zone. Samples of C250 maraging steel were butt-welded by GTAW-P (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding—Pulsed) process without filler material. The AW condition showed an inhomogeneous microhardness profile, associated with a partial precipitation hardening in the subcritical heat affected zone (SC-HAZ) followed by a softening in the intercritical (IC-HAZ) and recrystallized heat affected zone (R-HAZ). A loop-shaped phase was observed between low temperature IC-HAZ and SC-HAZ, associated with γr, as well as microsegregation at the weld metal (WM). The microstructural evolution during PWHT (480 °C) was evaluated on samples treated to different times (1–360 min). Microhardness profile along the welded joint was mostly homogeneous after 5 min of PWHT due to precipitation reaction. The microhardness in the WM was lower than in the rest of the joint due to the depletion of Ni, Ti and Mo in the martensite matrix related with the γr formation. The isothermal kinetics of precipitation reaction at 480 °C was studied using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), obtaining a JMAK expression. The average microhardness for each weld zone was proposed for monitoring the precipitation during PWHT, showing a different behaviour for the WM. γr in the WM was also quantified and modelled, while in the IC-HAZ tends to increase with PWHT time, affecting the microhardness.
