In this study, free vibration analysis of three-layer sandwich panels with cores based on a triply periodic minimum surface (TPMS) and graphene platelet-reinforced composite (GPLRC) faces is performed. Four different geometries including cylindrical, spherical, saddle and flat panels were investigated and the governing equations were solved using higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT) extracted from Hamilton’s principle. The accuracy and precision of the presented analytical method is verified by comparing the dimensionless natural frequencies with reference studies. Then, the effect of various parameters including panel geometry, core topology type and graphene weight percentage on the vibration response was investigated. The results show that adding graphene to the face layers significantly increases the natural frequencies and improves the overall stiffness of the structure. In addition, the frequencies of the panel may be controlled through different patterns and topologies. Also, double-curved panels, especially spherical geometries, present the highest fundamental natural frequency. The findings of this research could play an important role in the design and performance evaluation of advanced structures with TPMS cores and nanoscale reinforcement. Full article

This paper studies the thermomechanical low-velocity impact behaviors of geometrically imperfect nanoplatelet-reinforced composite (GRC) beams considering the von Kármán nonlinear geometric relationship. The graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs) are assumed to have a functionally graded (FG) distribution in the matrix beam along its thickness, following the X-pattern. The Halpin–Tsai model and the rule of mixture are employed to predict the effective Young modulus and other material properties. Dividing the impact process into two stages, the corresponding impact forces are calculated using the modified nonlinear Hertz contact law. The nonlinear governing equations are obtained by introducing the von Kármán nonlinear displacement–strain relationship into the first-order shear deformation theory and dispersed via the differential quadrature (DQ) method. Combining the governing equation of the impactor’s motion, they are further parametrically solved by the Newmark-β method associated with the Newton–Raphson iterative process. The influence of different types of geometrical imperfections on the nonlinear thermomechanical low-velocity impact behaviors of GRC beams with varying weight fractions of GPLs, subjected to different initial impact velocities, are studied in detail. Based on domain decomposition, a semi-analytical method (SAM) is applied to analyze the free vibration of double-curved shells of revolution with a general curvature radius made from graphene nanoplatelet (GPL)-reinforced porous composites. The mechanical properties of the GPL-reinforced composition are assessed with the Halpin–Tsai model. The double-curvature shell of revolution is broken down into segments along its axis in accordance with first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and the multi-segment partitioning technique, to derive the shell’s functional energy. At the same time, interfacial potential is used to ensure the continuity of the contact surface between neighboring segments. By applying the least-squares weighted residual method (LWRM) and modified variational principle (MVP) to relax and achieve interface compatibility conditions, a theoretical framework for analyzing vibrations is developed. The displacements and rotations are described through Fourier series and Chebyshev polynomials, accordingly, converting a two-dimensional issue into a suite of decoupled one-dimensional problems. The obtained solutions are contrasted with those achieved using the finite element method (FEM) and other existing results, and the current formulation’s validity and precision are confirmed. Example cases are presented to demonstrate the free vibration of GPL-reinforced porous composite double-curved paraboloidal, elliptical, and hyperbolical shells of revolution. The findings demonstrate that the natural frequency of the shell is related to pore coefficients, porosity, the mass fraction of the GPLs, and the distribution patterns of the GPLs. Full article

The implementation of a machine learning approach to predict vibration suppression, as derived from nanocomposite laminates with piezoelectric shunted systems, is studied in this article. Datasets providing the vibration response and vibration attenuation are developed using parametric finite element simulations. A graphene/fibre-reinforced laminate cantilever beam is used in those simulations. Parameters, including the graphene and fibre reinforcements content, as well as the fibre angles, are among the inputs. Output is the vibration suppression achieved by the piezoelectric shunted system. Artificial Neural Networks are trained and tested using the derived datasets. In this paper, the free vibration response of a stiffened functionally graded graphene nanoplatelet (GPL)-reinforced composite multilayer cylindrical shell panel is studied for the first time. The shell is stiffened by both stringers and rings. Additionally, the effect of reinforcing the shell panel, ring and stinger with GPLs is independently studied. Halpin–Tsai relations are employed to evaluate the mechanical properties of the shell panel, rings and stringers. The first-order shear deformation shell theory, accompanied by the Lekhnitsky smeared stiffener model, using the numerical finite element method and Hamilton principle, is employed to develop the governing motion equations of the shell panel. Four different types of GPL patterns, including FG-A, FG-X, FG-O and UD, are assumed across the thickness of the shell panel, rings and stringers. The effects of different factors, including various weight fractions and patterns of GPLs nanofillers, the geometry of the shell panel and stiffeners and two displacement boundary conditions, on the natural frequencies of the shell panel, have been studied. The nonlinear bending of the sandwich plates with graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs) reinforced porous composite (GNRPC) core and two metal skins subjected to different boundary conditions and various loads, such as the concentrated load at the center, linear loads with different slopes passing through the center, linear eccentric loads, uniform loads, and trapezoidal loads, has been presented. The popular four-unknown refined theory accounting for the thickness stretching effects has been employed to model the mechanics of the sandwich plates. The governing equations have been derived from the nonlinear Von Karman strain–displacement relationship and principle of virtual work with subsequent solution by employing the classical finite element method in combination with the Newton downhill method. The convergence of the numerical results has been checked. The accuracy and efficiency of the theory have been confirmed by comparing the obtained results with those available in the literature. Furthermore, a parametric study has been carried out to analyze the effects of load type, boundary conditions, porosity coefficient, GPLs weight fraction, GPLs geometry, and concentrated load radius on the nonlinear central bending deflections of the sandwich plates. In addition, the numerical results reveal that the adopted higher order theory can significantly improve the simulation of the transverse deflection in the thickness direction. Full article

The finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate the free and forced vibration characteristics of functionally graded graphene-nanoplatelet-reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) beams. The weight fraction of graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs) is assumed to vary continuously along the beam thickness according to a linear, parabolic, or uniform pattern. For the FG-GPLRC beam, the modified Halpin–Tsai micromechanics model is used to calculate the effective Young’s modulus, and the rule of mixture is used to determine the effective Poisson’s ratio and mass density. Based on the principle of virtual work under the assumptions of the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory, finite element formulations are derived to analyze the free and forced vibration characteristics of FG-GPLRC beams. A two-node beam element with six degrees of freedom is adopted to discretize the beam, and the corresponding stiffness matrix and mass matrix containing information on the variation of material properties can be derived. On this basis, the natural frequencies and the response amplitudes under external forces are calculated by the FEM. The performance of the proposed FEM is assessed, with some numerical results obtained by layering method and available in published literature. The comparison results show that the proposed FEM is capable of analyzing an FG-GPLRC beam. A detailed parametric investigation is carried out to study the effects of GPL weight fraction, distribution pattern, and dimensions on the free and forced vibration responses of the beam. Numerical results show that the above-mentioned effects play an important role with respect to the vibration behaviors of the beam. Full article

Lightweight blades with high strength are urgently needed in practical rotor engineering. Sandwich structures with porous core and reinforced surfaces are commonly applied to achieve these mechanical performances. Moreover, blades with large aspect ratios are established by the elastic plate models in theory. This paper studies the vibration of a rotating sandwich pre-twist plate with a setting angle reinforced by graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs). Its core is made of foam metal, and GPLs are added into the surface layers. Supposing that nanofillers are perfectly connected with matrix material, the effective mechanical parameters of the surface layers are calculated by the mixing law and the Halpin–Tsai model, while those of the core layers are determined by the open-cell scheme. The governing equation of the rotating plate is derived by employing the Hamilton principle. By comparing with the finite element method obtained by ANSYS, the present model and vibration analysis are verified. The material and structural parameters of the blade, including graphene nanoplatelet (GPL) weight faction, GPL distribution pattern, porosity coefficient, porosity distribution pattern, length-to-thickness ratio, length-to-width ratio, setting angle and pre-twist angle of the plate are discussed in detail. The finds provide important inspiration in the designing of a rotating sandwich blade. Full article

This work aims at investigating the nonlinear transient response of fluid-conveying pipes made of graphene nanoplatelet (GPL)-reinforced composite (GPLRC) under blast loads and in a thermal environment. A modified Halpin–Tsai model is used to approximate the effective Young’s modulus of the GPLRC pipes conveying fluid; the mass density and Poisson’s ratio are determined by using the Voigt model. A slender Euler–Bernoulli beam is considered for modeling the pipes conveying fluid. The vibration control equation of the GPLRC pipes conveying fluid under blast loads is obtained by using Hamilton’s principle. A set of second-order ordinary differential equations are obtained by using the second-order Galerkin discrete method and are solved by using the adaptive Runge–Kutta method. Numerical experiments show that GPL distribution and temperature; GPL weight fraction; pipe length-to-thickness ratio; flow velocity; and blast load parameters have important effects on the nonlinear transient response of the GPLRC pipes conveying fluid. The numerical results also show that due to the fluid–structure interaction, the vibration amplitudes of the GPLRC pipes conveying fluid decay after the impact of blast loads. Full article

Four different graphene-based temperature sensors were prepared, and their temperature and humidity dependences were tested. Sensor active layers prepared from reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and graphene nanoplatelets (Gnp) were deposited on the substrate from a dispersion by air brush spray coating. Another sensor layer was made by graphene growth from a plasma discharge (Gpl). The last graphene layer was prepared by chemical vapor deposition (Gcvd) and then transferred onto the substrate. The structures of rGO, Gnp, and Gpl were studied by scanning electron microscopy. The obtained results confirmed the different structures of these materials. Energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction was used to determine the elemental composition of the materials. Gcvd was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Elemental analysis showed different oxygen contents in the structures of the materials. Sensors with a small flake structure, i.e., rGO and Gnp, showed the highest change in resistance as a function of temperature. The temperature coefficient of resistance was 5.16−3·K−1 for Gnp and 4.86−3·K−1 for rGO. These values exceed that for a standard platinum thermistor. The Gpl and Gcvd sensors showed the least dependence on relative humidity, which is attributable to the number of oxygen groups in their structures. Full article

This paper conducted the free vibration analysis of a sandwich annular thin plate with whirl motion. The upper and lower faces of the annular plate are made of uniform solid metal, while its core is porous foamed metal reinforced by graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs). Both uniform and non-uniform distributions of GPLs and porosity along the direction of plate thickness which leads to a functionally graded (FG) core are taken into account. The effective material properties including Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and mass density are calculated by employing the Halpin–Tsai model and the rule of mixture, respectively. Based on the Kirchhoff plate theory, the differential equations of motion are derived by applying the Lagrange’s equation. Then, the assumed mode method is utilized to obtain free vibration behaviors of the sandwich annular plate. The finite element method is adopted to verify the present model and vibration analysis. The effects of porosity coefficient, porosity distribution, graphene nanoplatelet (GPL) distribution, graphene nanoplatelet (GPL) weight fraction, graphene nanoplatelet length-to-thickness ratio (GPL-LTR), graphene nanoplatelet length-to-width ratio (GPL-LWR), spinning speed, outer radius-to-thickness ratio and inner radius-to-thickness ratio of the plate, are examined in detail. This paper investigates the aeroelastic flutter and vibration reduction of functionally graded (FG) multilayer graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs) reinforced composite plates with piezoelectric patch subjected to supersonic flow. Activated by the control voltage, the piezoelectric patch can generate the active mass and active stiffness that can accordingly increase the base plate’s stiffness and mass. As a result, it changes the GPLs reinforced plate’s dynamic characteristics. The motion equation of the plate-piezoelectric system is derived through the Hamilton principle. Based on the modified Halpin–Tsai model, the effects of graphene nanoplatelets weight fraction and distribution pattern on the dynamic behaviors of the plate are numerically studied in detail. The result illustrates that adding a few amounts of grapheme nanoplatelets can effectually enhance the aeroelastic properties of the plates. Two kinds of control strategies, including the displacement and acceleration feedback control, are applied to suppress the occurrence of the flutter of the plate. It shows that the displacement and acceleration feedback control can improve the critical flutter Mach number of the plate by attaching active stiffness and active mass, respectively. Furthermore, the combined displacement and acceleration feedback control has a better control effect than that of considering only one of them. Full article

The focus of this paper is the effect of thickness stretching on the static and dynamic behaviors of functionally graded graphene reinforced composite (FG-GRC) plates. The bending and free vibration behaviors of FG-GRC plates under simply supported conditions are studied based on two plate theories, with or without taking into account the thickness stretching effect, respectively, and the effect of thickness stretching on FG-GRC plates is analyzed by comparing the calculated results of the two types of plate theories. The properties of composite materials are estimated by the modified Halpin-Tsai model and rule of mixture, Hamilton’s principle is used to construct its governing equation, and the Navier solution method is used to find the closed solution. The numerical results show that the effect of thickness stretching depends mainly on the transverse anisotropy of the FG-GRC plates, and the FG-GRC plates are most significantly affected by the thickness stretching when the graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs) are asymmetrically distributed, and the effect of thickness stretching tends to increase as the total number of layers and the weight fraction of GPLs increase. This paper presents a study on wave propagation in rotating functionally graded (FG) microbeams reinforced by graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs). The graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs) are considered to distribute in the diameter direction of the micro-beam in a gradient pattern, which leads to the functionally graded structure.
