Forest ecological product value realization (FEPVR) seeks to convert forest ecosystem services into identifiable, accountable, compensable, tradable, and financeable value returns through institutional and market arrangements. Existing studies have mainly emphasized aggregate evaluation or conversion efficiency, with less attention to the structural relationship between ecological supply capacity and value-capture capacity. This study develops a dual-dimensional framework of use-value realization (UVR) and exchange-value realization (EVR), and constructs a city-level panel of 147 policy-practice sample cities (prefecture-level and above) in China over 2019–2023. An entropy-weighted composite index and an entropy-weighted TOPSIS model are applied to measure FEPVR mechanism development, structural configurations, and relative closeness to the sample-defined ideal state. The results show that the mean composite score increased from 0.194 in 2019 to 0.337 in 2023, while the coefficient of variation declined from 0.561 to 0.398, indicating overall improvement and narrowing intercity disparities. Global Moran’s I remains positive and significant throughout the study period, indicating significant and positive spatial autocorrelation in FEPVR mechanism development. The UVR–EVR decomposition reveals substantial structural divergence: the HH, HL, LH, and LL configurations include 29, 33, 25, and 60 cities, respectively. TOPSIS results further show that EVR relative closeness increased markedly, whereas UVR relative closeness declined slightly, indicating that institutional and market-based value-capture capacity expanded faster than the ecological supply base. Robustness checks suggest that the rise in EVR is strongly associated with institutional-entry indicators, and should therefore be interpreted as the expansion of value-capture instruments rather than direct evidence of realized market performance or ecological improvement. The findings provide a descriptive evaluation of FEPVR mechanism development in cities with documented policy or practice foundations, and should not be generalized as the average condition of all Chinese cities. The cultivation of Hericium erinaceus in China accounts for about 85% of the global supply. Its decentralized production systems have developed across diverse climate zones, leading to distinct, location-specific practices recorded in local technical standards. This scoping review synthesizes these empirical protocols from five agro-climatic regions. It illustrates how adaptive strategies such as cold-tolerant strains in the northeast and market-driven precision in the subtropics are associated with yield stability. These practices reflect two interconnected forms of diversity. One is the diversity of cultivation systems themselves, from forest-based methods to industrial-scale production systems. The other is the diversity of locally adapted strains developed for specific environments. We use the Intelligent Germplasm–Cultivation–Processing–Market (GCPM) Integration framework to connect local practices with broader questions of systemic resilience. The evidence draws on field-validated standards, not controlled experiments, reflecting the current state of research. This work presents China’s practical knowledge as a reference for designing context-sensitive, climate-resilient cultivation systems elsewhere, suggesting that resilience may depend more on intelligent adaptation to local conditions than on one-size-fits-all solutions. The urban trade in non-timber forest products (NTFPs) plays a key role in sustaining livelihoods in the Global South, while also suggesting potential pressure on resource supply systems. This study provides an integrated analysis of NTFP diversity, market structure, economic importance, and perceived drivers of resource decline in Kolwezi, a rapidly expanding mining city where such dynamics remain poorly documented. Data were collected through surveys conducted with 35 sellers across two major urban markets and 384 consumers from different neighbourhoods and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics to examine patterns, associations, and socio-demographic influences. A total of 65 NTFP species were recorded, including 49 plant, 14 animal, and 2 fungal species, reflecting strong dependence on Miombo ecosystems. Medicinal (59.3%) and food uses dominate, with multifunctional species such as Bobgunnia madagascariensis (Desv.) J.H.Kirkbr. & Wiersama, Canarium schweinfurthii Engl., Terminalia mollis M.A.Lawson, Gardenia ternifolia subsp. jovis-tonantis (Welw.) Verdc., and Albizia antunesiana Harms, playing a central role in both household use and market supply. The trade is largely female-dominated (79.1%) and constitutes a major component of the informal urban economy, with monthly incomes ranging from USD 9 to 429.3, primarily driven by sales volume rather than unit price. However, the sector is constrained by structural and logistical limitations, including remoteness of supply areas, seasonality, and limited value addition. The perceived declining availability of high-use-value species, attributed by respondents to deforestation, mining expansion, and overexploitation, highlights perceived sustainability concerns. These pressures are perceived differently across socio-demographic groups, indicating heterogeneous understandings of environmental change. Overall, the results indicate a perceived mismatch between rising urban demand and declining resource availability, which may reflect an emerging socio-ecological imbalance between urban demand and perceived resource availability. Addressing these challenges requires integrated strategies that combine the domestication of priority species, the development of processing chains, improved infrastructure, and strengthened governance mechanisms. Such approaches are essential to reconcile livelihood support with the sustainable management of NTFPs in rapidly transforming urban landscapes. Full article

As the global climate change mitigation efforts urge the transition towards a green economy, comprehending the carbon footprint of forest industry supply chain is crucial to ensure sustainable management and utilization of renewable resources. This research quantified the carbon footprint of four different forest product industries: chip mill, hardwood sawmill, softwood sawmill, and in-woods chipping in the Northeastern U.S. Additionally, the impact of transportation (road and rail) on carbon footprint was analyzed. Life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed using SimaPro 9.3.0.3 software and allied databases (USLCI and US-EI). The functional unit was 1 tonne for chip mill (wood chips) and 1 m3 for sawmill (planks). The highest-contributing inputs for the chip mill and softwood sawmill were transportation. However, in-woods chipping and the hardwood sawmill had raw materials, residual wood, and round wood as the highest-contributing input. The study also enumerated the substances that contributed most to environmental impacts. The carbon footprint of chip mill, in-woods chipping, hardwood, and softwood sawmill were 49.5, 21.7, 72.9, and 73.7 kg CO2 eq per respective functional units, respectively. The results could assist the forest industry in promoting wood feedstock with a minimal carbon footprint and have educated engagement in an ever-evolving carbon market. Full article

Based on global bilateral six-digit HS code trade data of wood forest products from 2000 to 2022, we constructed a three-dimensional panel dataset combining year, importing country, and exporting country, and used a staggered difference-in-differences (DID) model to systematically examine the impact of regional trade agreements (RTAs) on the export of wood forest products and the mechanisms through which they operate. The results show that the signing of RTAs exerts a significant promoting effect on the export market share, extensive margin, and quantity margin of wood forest products, while exerting a significant negative effect on the price margin. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the impact of signing RTAs on the ternary margin of wood forest product exports varies significantly with product characteristics, bilateral distance, and the type of trade agreement. Mechanism analysis shows that RTAs produce these effects by reducing bilateral trade costs and strengthening bilateral social ties. Accordingly, this paper proposes policy recommendations to strengthen the RTA network, optimize the bilateral trade environment, and enhance the depth of environmental provisions in RTAs to promote the green and high-quality development of wood forest products. Analysis of game management and trophy game populations in Osijek-Baranja County shows that this region is one of the most valuable hunting areas in Croatia, with rich populations of red deer, roe deer, and wild boar, as well as stable annual population growth. The methodological framework included products and services in hunting based on data analysis from the Croatian Hunting Association, big-game trophy records (ETD forms), the Central Hunting Register, and the official price list of game culling and hunting services. Data on harvests and trophy values indicate long-term population stability and high economic potential of hunting, with red deer generating the highest total revenue (EUR 7.29 million), while roe deer and wild boar contribute to overall stability and harvest volume. The total trophy value over 12 hunting seasons reaches EUR 11.99 million, underscoring the economic importance of hunting tourism for local communities. Differences among hunting ground users suggest that private companies and the state company Croatian Forests Ltd. often achieve higher trophy values, while county hunting associations report more modest results. However, regression analysis shows there is not a strong statistical correlation between management structure and trophy outcomes, highlighting the significant influence of ecological and spatial factors on game quality. International hunters, primarily from Germany and Austria, represent a key segment of demand, confirming the market potential for further development of hunting tourism. Despite the rich natural base, results indicate the need for better marketing approach, digital visibility, and integration of hunting products with other forms of tourism, such as gastronomic, wine, and nature tourism. Effective positioning of Croatia as a competitive hunting destination requires adaptation to contemporary market trends and adherence to international sustainable management guidelines (FAO, ELC, CBD). In conclusion, hunting in Croatia represents an important non-wood forest product and a vital resource for rural and economic development. Sustainable population management, quality promotion, and integration of traditional and innovative practices are essential for reinforcing biodiversity conservation, supporting community livelihoods, and strengthening Croatia’s role in the European and global hunting-tourism market. Enhancing forestry management efficiency is critical for global sustainable development goals, yet how institutional arrangements can effectively incentivize farmers’ performance requires deeper investigation. This study constructs an integrated framework to examine the effects of well-defined property rights and market certification on the output and technical efficiency of household bamboo management. Utilizing survey data from 1090 households in China, we employ stochastic frontier analysis (SFA), propensity score matching (PSM), and mediation models. The findings reveal a key divergence: (1) Forest tenure certificates significantly increased bamboo output but not technical efficiency. This “quantity-driven” effect stemmed from increased capital and land inputs. (2) Market certification enhanced both output and technical efficiency, operating via a “quality-driven” mechanism of standardized management. (3) Significant technical efficiency losses persist, indicating substantial potential for productivity gains through optimized practices. This study concludes that singular property rights institutions are insufficient to overcome the “output-without-efficiency” bottleneck. Complementary, market-based mechanisms are essential for a dual-pillar policy system. This research offers theoretical support for optimizing forestry policies and provides insights for other developing countries seeking sustainable resource management. Full article

Against the backdrop of accelerating restructuring in the global economy and trade landscape, understanding the evolutionary mechanisms of timber trade networks has become increasingly crucial. Utilizing cross-national timber trade data from 2000 to 2024, this study applies a Stochastic Actor-Oriented Model to analyze the dynamic evolution of the timber trade network by incorporating multidimensional factors, including trade costs, resource costs, network structure, and trade structure. The findings reveal that: (1) Endogenous network mechanisms—particularly the triadic closure effect—play a dominant role in the formation of trade relationships; (2) resource-rich countries exhibit an export expansion with import restriction phenomenon, actively expanding exports while restricting imports to safeguard resource sovereignty; (3) timber price alone insufficiently reshapes trade ties, whereas sustainable forest management significantly drives network dynamics; and (4) net exporters favor developed economies via market screening. Economic development asymmetrically moderates trade—boosting exports in net exporters while curbing imports in net importers. This study moves beyond traditional economic perspectives, uncovering the profound effects of structural embeddedness and strategic behavior in timber trade, and the findings extend the theoretical framework for resource-based product commerce and provide empirical foundations for formulating equitable and sustainable forestry trade policies. In-depth data on business development processes is required to understand the reasons behind productivity dynamics and economic trends. However, even basic demographic knowledge of Russian timber enterprises is often scarce, which severely limits opportunities for advanced economic research. This paper addresses this issue by introducing an open dataset on the business demographics of logging and sawn wood production companies in Asian Russia, an important center of the global forestry economy. To create an aggregated dataset containing registration and liquidation information from 1991 to 2024, we developed an approach to collect and process primary data on 9731 legal entities in the specified timber industries and Russian regions. This paper presents the periodization of the Russian timber market for the first time based on the obtained dataset. This periodization allows us to track the effects of significant changes in the business environment over the past 35 years. The analysis revealed a structural shift in 2016, due to the launch of the tax authorities’ policy of liquidating abandoned and shell companies. This led to an overestimation of the number of liquidations in official statistics. Our estimates of the liquidation rates for economically active timber companies from 2016 to 2024 are three to five times lower, highlighting the importance of using micro-level data for economic research. Our findings suggest that the crises of 2019–2020 and 2022–2024 had a greater impact on new entries than exits in the Asian Russian timber market. The largest forest companies have demonstrated resilience in the face of changes in the timber market, the pandemic crisis, and economic sanctions imposed on Russia, as evidenced by their low liquidation rates. Global biodiversity decreased by 69% from 1970 to 2022, representing a key risk to economic activity. However, the link between nature, biodiversity and finance has received little attention within the field of sustainable finance. This paper attempts to fill this gap. Nature finance aims to avoid biodiversity loss and promote nature-positive activities, such as the conservation and protection of biodiversity through market-based solutions with the proper measurement of impact. Measuring biodiversity impact remains a challenge for most companies and banks, with a fragmented landscape of nature frameworks. We conduct a bibliometric analysis of the literature on biodiversity finance and analyze a unique market dataset of five global investment funds as well as all corporate bonds issued in Brazil, the country with the largest biodiversity assets. First, we find that the literature on nature finance is recent with a tipping point in 2020, with the three most common concepts being ecosystem services, nature-based solutions and circular economy. Second, we find that sovereigns and two corporate sectors (food production, pulp & paper) represent the vast majority of issuers that currently incorporate biodiversity considerations into funding structures, suggesting an opportunity to expand accountability for biodiversity impacts across a greater number of sectors. Third, we find a disconnect between science and finance. Out of a catalogue of 158 biodiversity metrics proposed by the IFC, just 33 have been used in bond issuances and 32 by fund managers, suggesting an opportunity for technical assistance for companies and to simplify catalogs to create a common language. Lack of consensus around metrics, complexity, and cost explain this gap. Fourth, we identify a distinction between liquid markets and illiquid markets in their application of biodiversity impact management and measurement. Illiquid markets, such as private equity, bilateral lending, voluntary carbon markets or investment funds can develop complex bespoke mechanisms to measure nature, leveraging detailed catalogues of metrics. Liquid markets, including bonds, exhibit a preference for simpler metrics such as preserved areas or forest cover. Full article

The forest food industry, as a typical low-carbon green ecological industry, holds strategic significance in addressing global food security challenges. This review takes forest protein resources as an example to analyze the current development status, opportunities, and challenges from a global industrial perspective. Research indicates that forests, as a vital food treasure for humanity, can provide diverse protein sources such as insects, plants, microorganisms, and bio-manufactured proteins. Currently, numerous technological innovations and market practices have emerged in fields such as insect protein (e.g., there are over 3000 edible insect species globally, with a market size of approximately USD 3.2 billion in 2023, projected to reach USD 7.6 billion by 2028), plant-based alternative protein (e.g., plant-based chicken nuggets by Impossible Foods in the United States), microbial fermentation protein (e.g., the production capacity of Solar Foods’ production base in Finland is 160 tons per year), and cell-cultured meat (e.g., cell-cultured chicken is sold in Singapore), demonstrating significant potential in alleviating food supply pressures and reducing environmental burdens. However, industrial development still faces practical challenges including insufficient resource exploration, incomplete nutritional and safety evaluation systems, low consumer acceptance, high costs of core technologies (e.g., the first cell-cultured meat burger in 2013 cost over 1 million USD/lb, and current costs need to be reduced to 17–65 USD/kg to achieve market competitiveness), and imperfect regulatory mechanisms (e.g., varying national standards lead to high compliance costs for enterprises). In the future, it is necessary to achieve efficient development and sustainable utilization of forest protein resources by strengthening resource exploration, clarifying the basis of nutrients, promoting multi-technology integration and innovation, and establishing a sound market access system, thereby providing solutions for global food security and high-quality development of the food industry. Monitoring and tracking the long-term dynamics of vineyard coverage and fresh grape production can support sustainable agricultural planning under evolving climate, market, and land-use pressures. This study presents a comprehensive, data-driven analysis of global viticulture trends from 1961 to 2023, integrating the official statistical database of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAOSTAT) for grape-producing countries. We applied statistical trend analysis (Mann–Kendall test), Random Forest regression modeling, cross-correlation functions, and dissimilarity analysis to examine patterns and drivers of change in vineyard area, production volume, yield efficiency, and land-use intensity. Our results reveal a significant global decoupling of production from vineyard areas, driven by increasing yields and technological intensification, particularly in rapidly expanding table grape markets in Asia. While traditional European wine regions are reducing vineyard coverage, emerging producers such as China and India are achieving high production with improved land efficiency. Production volume emerged as the dominant predictor of vineyard-harvested areas, while climatic factors, urbanization, and socio-economic dynamics also exerted significant influence. Our findings point to growing polarization in production amounts, alongside convergence in yield and management efficiency across countries. These findings contribute to the understanding of global viticulture transformation and provide insights into optimizing land-use strategies for sustainable grape production under climate change and market evolution. The BRICS has emerged as a strategic actor in global environmental and economic governance, encompassing 42% of the world’s population, 32% of global GDP, and nearly half of the world’s forest resources. Member countries have integrated forest management with renewable energy transition and carbon market mechanisms as part of their sustainable development strategies. In this context, Türkiye positions the forestry sector as both an environmental and economic lever in its potential alignment with BRICS while seeking to diversify its foreign policy. This study examines the long-term relationships between forest area, population, forest product trade, renewable energy production, and carbon emissions in BRICS-T countries for the period 2009–2023, employing panel econometric methods (FMOLS and DOLS). The findings indicate that population growth, forest expansion, and forest product trade are associated with increased emissions, while renewable energy production contributes to emission reductions. Moreover, bidirectional causality is identified between population and emissions and between renewable energy and emissions. The results suggest that environmental sustainability depends not only on the availability of resources but also on the quality of governance, policy coherence, and sectoral coordination. The study provides an original contribution to the literature by analyzing Türkiye’s environmental and economic integration with BRICS through the combined lens of forestry and energy transition, offering exploratory policy implications for Türkiye’s strategic position in a multipolar world. We document and analyze an emblematic case study of non-indigenous peasant autonomy and re-peasantization in Sa Kaeo province in the Issan region of Thailand, using a mostly qualitative, single case-study methodology. The Kok Edoi autonomous community, whose members engage in community forest management and increasingly in agroecological farming, was founded more than twenty-five years ago as the product of a land occupation by landless peasants associated with the national Thai social movement, the Assembly of the Poor (AoP), which is part of the global peasant movement, La Via Campesina (LVC). Partially inspired by opportunities given to the community and to AoP by LVC to learn and gain inspiration from Latin American experiences such as the Zapatistas in Mexico, Kok Edoi autonomy exemplifies how the exchange of social movement knowledge and experience can help shape and strengthen local struggles, and it is also suggestive of autonomy as an alternative pathway of resistance and sustainable development in Thailand. We review the literature on territorial autonomy, re-peasantization, and community forestry and autonomy in Thailand and the world. Situating Kok Edoi in Thai history concerning policies and conflicts around land and forests, we examine the type, dimensions, and facets of autonomy and re-peasantization present in Kok Edoi to demonstrate how these factors contribute to the community being considered an emblematic case of peasant autonomy, peasant land occupation, peasant management of and livelihood derived from natural resources, more autonomous alternative markets, collective accumulation, and political training and mobilization that contributes to a class-based national movement. This is novel in an academic literature that has to date focused principally on indigenous autonomy, largely in Latin America. Full article

The global supply chain of wood products plays a key role in sustainable development and climate resilience, but remains fragmented in the academic and technical literature. This systematic review aims to synthesize research published between 2000 and 2025 on wood products’ production, transformation, trade, governance, and sustainability. A comprehensive search was conducted in multiple databases and repositories, including Scopus, FAOSTAT, ScienceDirect, DOAJ, SciELO, CAPES, EMBRAPA, and AGNIC. A total of 784 records were identified and, after applying eligibility and deduplication criteria, 119 documents were included in the final synthesis. The results reveal key thematic trends, including the dynamics of international timber trade, certification and traceability systems, logistical challenges, digitalization, and integration of forest policies. Key gaps include limited inclusion of smallholders, low technology adoption in the Global South, and fragmented governance mechanisms. The results suggest that improving sustainability in global timber supply chains requires coordinated policy frameworks, technological investment, and inclusive market systems. This review contributes a consolidated overview and offers insights for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners in the forestry sector. Full article
