Multi-vessel formation shipping demonstrates significant potential for enhancing maritime transportation efficiency and economy. However, existing route planning systems inadequately address the unique challenges of formations, where traditional methods fail to integrate global optimality, local dynamic obstacle avoidance, and formation coordination into a cohesive system. Global planning often neglects multi-ship collaborative constraints, while local methods disregard vessel maneuvering characteristics and formation stability. This paper proposes GLFM, a three-layer hierarchical framework (global optimization–local adjustment-formation collaboration module) for intelligent route planning of transport ship formations. GLFM integrates an improved multi-objective A* algorithm for global path optimization under dynamic meteorological and oceanographic (METOC) conditions and International Maritime Organization (IMO) safety regulations, with an enhanced Artificial Potential Field (APF) method incorporating ship safety domains for dynamic local obstacle avoidance. Formation, structural stability, and coordination are achieved through an improved leader–follower approach. Simulation results demonstrate that GLFM-generated trajectories significantly outperform conventional routes, reducing average risk level by 38.46% and voyage duration by 12.15%, while maintaining zero speed and period violation rates. Effective obstacle avoidance is achieved, with the leader vessel navigating optimized global waypoints and followers maintaining formation structure. The GLFM framework successfully balances global optimality with local responsiveness, enhances formation transportation efficiency and safety, and provides a comprehensive solution for intelligent route optimization in multi-constrained marine convoy operations. In lace textile manufacturing, the dyeing process in parallel machine environments faces challenges from sequence-dependent setup times due to color family transitions, machine eligibility constraints based on weight capacities, and probabilistic re-dyeing operations arising from quality inspection failures, which often lead to increased tardiness. To tackle this multi-constrained problem, a stochastic integer programming model is formulated to minimize total estimated tardiness. A novel symmetry-driven two-population collaborative differential evolution (TCDE) algorithm is then proposed. It features two symmetrically complementary subpopulations that achieve a balance between global exploration and local exploitation. One subpopulation employs chaotic parameter adaptation through a logistic map for symmetrically enhanced exploration, while the other adjusts parameters based on population diversity and convergence speed to facilitate symmetry-aware exploitation. Moreover, it also incorporates a symmetrical collaborative mechanism that includes the periodic migration of top individuals between subpopulations, along with elite-set guidance, to enhance both population diversity and convergence efficiency. Extensive computational experiments were conducted on 21 small-scale (optimally validated via CVX) and 15 large-scale synthetic datasets, as well as 21 small-scale (similarly validated) and 20 large-scale industrial datasets. These experiments demonstrate that TCDE significantly outperforms state-of-the-art comparative methods. Ablation studies also further verify the critical role of its symmetry-based components, with computational results confirming its superiority in solving the considered problem. Full article

LEAD-YOLO: A Lightweight and Accurate Network for Small Object Detection in Autonomous Driving

The accurate detection of small objects remains a critical challenge in autonomous driving systems, where improving detection performance typically comes at the cost of increased model complexity, conflicting with the lightweight requirements of edge deployment. To address this dilemma, this paper proposes LEAD-YOLO (Lightweight Efficient Autonomous Driving YOLO), an enhanced network architecture based on YOLOv11n that achieves superior small object detection while maintaining computational efficiency. The proposed framework incorporates three innovative components: First, the Backbone integrates a lightweight Convolutional Gated Transformer (CGF) module, which employs normalized gating mechanisms with residual connections, and a Dilated Feature Fusion (DFF) structure that enables progressive multi-scale context modeling through dilated convolutions. These components synergistically enhance small object perception and environmental context understanding without compromising network efficiency. Second, the neck features a hierarchical feature fusion module (HFFM) that establishes guided feature aggregation paths through hierarchical structuring, facilitating collaborative modeling between local structural information and global semantics for robust multi-scale object detection in complex traffic scenarios. Third, the head implements a shared feature detection head (SFDH) structure, incorporating shared convolution modules for efficient cross-scale feature sharing and detail enhancement branches for improved texture and edge modeling. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of LEAD-YOLO: on the nuImages dataset, the method achieves 3.8% and 5.4% improvements in mAP@0.5 and mAP@[0.5:0.95], respectively, while reducing parameters by 24.1%. On the VisDrone2019 dataset, performance gains reach 7.9% and 6.4% for corresponding metrics. These findings demonstrate that LEAD-YOLO achieves an excellent balance between detection accuracy and model efficiency, thereby showcasing substantial potential for applications in autonomous driving. In intelligent vehicular networks, the accuracy of semantic segmentation in road scenes is crucial for vehicle-mounted artificial intelligence to achieve environmental perception, decision support, and safety control. Although deep learning methods have made significant progress, two main challenges remain: first, the difficulty in balancing global and local features leads to blurred object boundaries and misclassification; second, conventional convolutions have limited ability to perceive irregular objects, causing information loss and affecting segmentation accuracy. To address these issues, this paper proposes a global–local collaborative attention module and a spider web convolution module. The former enhances feature representation through bidirectional feature interaction and dynamic weight allocation, reducing false positives and missed detections. The latter introduces an asymmetric sampling topology and six-directional receptive field paths to effectively improve the recognition of irregular objects. Experiments on the Cityscapes, CamVid, and BDD100K datasets, collected using vehicle-mounted cameras, demonstrate that the proposed method performs excellently across multiple evaluation metrics, including mIoU, mRecall, mPrecision, and mAccuracy. Comparative experiments with classical segmentation networks, attention mechanisms, and convolution modules validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The proposed method demonstrates outstanding performance in sensor-based semantic segmentation tasks and is well-suited for environmental perception systems in autonomous driving. Full article

How to Compensate Forest Ecosystem Services Through Restorative Justice: An Analysis Based on Typical Cases in China

The ongoing degradation of global forests has severely weakened ecosystem service functions, and traditional judicial remedies have struggled to quantify intangible ecological losses. China has become an important testing ground for restorative justice through the establishment of specialized environmental courts and the practice of environmental public interest litigation. Since 2015, China has actively explored and institutionalized the application of the concept of restorative justice in its environmental justice reform. This concept emphasizes compensating environmental damages through actual ecological restoration acts rather than relying solely on financial compensation. This shift reflects a deep understanding of the limitations of traditional environmental justice and an institutional response to China’s ecological civilization construction, providing critical support for forest ecosystem restoration and enabling ecological restoration activities, such as replanting and re-greening, habitat reconstruction, etc., to be enforced through judicial decisions. This study conducts a qualitative analysis of judicial rulings in forest restoration cases to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of restorative justice in compensating for losses in forest ecosystem service functions. The findings reveal the following: (1) restoration measures in judicial practice are disconnected from the types of ecosystem services available; (2) non-market values and long-term cumulative damages are systematically underestimated, with monitoring mechanisms exhibiting fragmented implementation and insufficient effectiveness; (3) management cycles are set in violation of ecological restoration principles, and acceptance standards lack function-oriented indicators; (4) participation of key stakeholders is severely lacking, and local knowledge and professional expertise have not been integrated. In response, this study proposes a restorative judicial framework oriented toward forest ecosystem services, utilizing four mechanisms: independent recognition of legal interests, function-matched restoration, application of scientific assessment tools, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. This framework aims to drive a paradigm shift from formal restoration to substantive functional recovery, providing theoretical support and practical pathways for environmental judicial reform and global forest governance. Unmanned platforms such as unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned ground vehicles, and autonomous underwater vehicles often face challenges of data, device, and model heterogeneity when performing collaborative data processing tasks. Existing research does not simultaneously address issues from these three aspects. To address this issue, this study designs an unmanned platform cluster architecture inspired by the cloud-edge-end model. This architecture integrates federated learning for privacy protection, leverages the advantages of distributed model training, and utilizes edge computing’s near-source data processing capabilities. Additionally, this paper proposes a federated edge intelligence method (DSIA-FEI), which comprises two key components. Based on traditional federated learning, a data sharing mechanism is introduced, in which data is extracted from edge-side platforms and placed into a data sharing platform to form a public dataset. At the beginning of model training, random sampling is conducted from the public dataset and distributed to each unmanned platform, so as to mitigate the impact of data distribution heterogeneity and class imbalance during collaborative data processing in unmanned platforms. Moreover, an intelligent model aggregation strategy based on similarity measurement and loss gradient is developed. This strategy maps heterogeneous model parameters to a unified space via hierarchical parameter alignment, and evaluates the similarity between local and global models of edge devices in real-time, along with the loss gradient, to select the optimal model for global aggregation, reducing the influence of device and model heterogeneity on cooperative learning of unmanned platform swarms. This study carried out extensive validation on multiple datasets, and the experimental results showed that the accuracy of the DSIA-FEI proposed in this paper reaches 0.91, 0.91, 0.88, and 0.87 on the FEMNIST, FEAIR, EuroSAT, and RSSCN7 datasets, respectively, which is more than 10% higher than the baseline method. In addition, the number of communication rounds is reduced by more than 40%, which is better than the existing mainstream methods, and the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified. Recent years have seen frequent heavy rainfall events in Japan, often linked to Baiu fronts and typhoons. These events are exacerbated by global warming, leading to an increased frequency and intensity. As floods represent a serious threat to sustainable urban development and community resilience, this study contributes to sustainability-focused risk reduction through integrated analysis. This study focuses on the 2 June 2023 heavy rain disaster in Toyohashi City, Japan, which caused extensive damage due to flooding from the Yagyu and Umeda Rivers. Using numerical models, this study accurately reproduces flooding patterns, revealing that high tides amplified the inundation area by 1.5 times at the Yagyu River. A resident questionnaire conducted in collaboration with Toyohashi City identifies key trends in evacuation behavior and disaster information usage. Traditional media such as TV remain dominant, but younger generations leverage electronic devices for disaster updates. These insights emphasize the need for targeted information dissemination and enhanced disaster preparedness strategies, including online materials and flexible training programs. The methods and findings presented in this study can inform local and regional governments in building adaptive disaster management policies, which contribute to a more sustainable society. Vaccine equity and access remain critical challenges in global health, particularly in regions with complex socio-political landscapes, like the Middle East. This review examines disparities in vaccine distribution within the Middle Eastern context, analyzing the unique challenges and opportunities across the region. It provides an overview of the area’s diverse finances and its impact on healthcare accessibility. We examine vaccination rates and identify critical barriers to vaccination, which may be particular issues in developing countries, such as vaccine thermostability, logistical hurdles, financial constraints, and socio-cultural factors, or broader problems, like political instability, economic limitations, and deficiencies in healthcare infrastructure. However, we also highlight successful efforts at the regional and national levels to improve vaccine equity, along with their outcomes and impacts. Ultimately, by drawing on the experiences of previous programs and initiatives, we propose strategies to bridge the gaps in vaccine access through sustainable financing, local manufacturing, and the strengthening of health systems. This approach emphasizes the importance of regional collaboration and long-term self-sufficiency in enhancing global health security and achieving more equitable outcomes in the Middle East. Urban areas are at the forefront in addressing global challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss. Among the key responses are nature-based solutions, which are increasingly being integrated into policy frameworks but which require strong community engagement for their effective implementation. This paper presents the findings of surveys conducted within the Place Lab in Katowice, Poland, an initiative developed as part of an international project and used as a participatory tool for co-creating and implementing green infrastructure. The project applies both place-based and people-centred approaches to support European cities in their transition towards regenerative urbanism. Place Lab activities encourage collaboration between local authorities and residents, enhancing awareness and fostering participation in environmental initiatives. The survey data collected during the project allowed for the evaluation of changes in public attitudes and levels of engagement and for the identification of broader societal phenomena that may influence the implementation of nature-based solutions. The findings revealed, for instance, that more women were interested in supporting the project, that residents tended to be sceptical of governmental actions on climate change, and that views were divided on the trade-off between urban infrastructure such as parking and roads and the presence of green areas. Furthermore, questions of responsibility, awareness, and long-term commitment were frequently raised. Building on the survey results and the existing literature, the study proposes a set of indicators to assess the contribution of citizen participation to the adoption of nature-based solutions. While the effectiveness of nature-based solutions in mitigating climate change impacts can be assessed relatively directly, evaluating civic engagement is more complex. Nevertheless, when conducted transparently and interpreted by experts, indicator-based assessment can offer valuable insights. This study introduces a novel perspective by considering not only drivers of engagement but also the obstacles. The proposed indicators provide a foundation for evaluating community readiness and commitment to nature-based approaches and may be adapted for application in other urban settings and in future research on climate resilience strategies. Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) pose significant risks to occupational populations engaged in poultry farming, livestock handling, and live poultry market operations due to frequent exposure to infected animals and contaminated environments. This review synthesizes evidence on AIV exposure patterns and risk factors through a comprehensive analysis of viral characteristics, host dynamics, environmental influences, and human behaviors. The main routes of transmission include direct animal contact, respiratory contact during slaughter/milking, and environmental contamination (aerosols, raw milk, shared equipment). Risks increase as the virus adapts between species, survives longer in cold/wet conditions, and spreads through wild bird migration (long-distance transmission) and live bird trade (local transmission). Recommended control measures include integrated animal–human–environment surveillance, stringent biosecurity measures, vaccination, and education. These findings underscore the urgent need for global ‘One Health’ collaboration to assess risk and implement preventive measures against potentially pandemic strains of influenza A viruses, especially in light of undetected mild/asymptomatic cases and incomplete knowledge of viral evolution. This study presents a cost-effective, carbon-negative construction material for affordable housing, developed entirely from locally available agricultural wastes: rice husk ash, wood ash, and rice straw—materials often problematic to dispose of in many African regions. Rice husk ash provides high amorphous silica, acting as a strong pozzolanic agent. Wood ash contributes calcium oxide and alkalis to serve as a reactive binder, while rice straw functions as a lightweight organic filler, enhancing thermal insulation and indoor climate comfort. These materials undergo natural pozzolanic reactions with water, eliminating the need for Portland cement—a major global source of anthropogenic CO2 emissions (~900 kg CO2/ton cement). This process is inherently carbon-negative, not only avoiding emissions from cement production but also capturing atmospheric CO2 during lime carbonation in the hardening phase. Field trials in Kenya confirmed the composite’s sufficient structural strength for low-cost housing, with added benefits including termite resistance and suitability for unskilled laborers. In a collaboration between the University of Tartu and Kenyatta University, a semi-automatic mixing and casting system was developed, enabling fast, low-labor construction of full-scale houses. This innovation aligns with Kenya’s Big Four development agenda and supports sustainable rural development, post-disaster reconstruction, and climate mitigation through scalable, eco-friendly building solutions. Facial expression plays an important role in human–computer interaction and affective computing. However, existing expression recognition methods cannot effectively capture multi-scale structural details contained in facial expressions, leading to a decline in recognition accuracy. Inspired by the multi-scale processing mechanism of the biological visual system, this paper proposes a wavelet-guided global–local feature aggregation network (WGGLFA) for facial expression recognition (FER). Our WGGLFA network consists of three main modules: the scale-aware expansion (SAE) module, which combines dilated convolution and wavelet transform to capture multi-scale contextual features; the structured local feature aggregation (SLFA) module based on facial keypoints to extract structured local features; and the expression-guided region refinement (ExGR) module, which enhances features from high-response expression areas to improve the collaborative modeling between local details and key expression regions. All three modules utilize the spatial frequency locality of the wavelet transform to achieve high-/low-frequency feature separation, thereby enhancing fine-grained expression representation under frequency domain guidance. Experimental results show that our WGGLFA achieves accuracies of 90.32%, 91.24%, and 71.90% on the RAF-DB, FERPlus, and FED-RO datasets, respectively, demonstrating that our WGGLFA is effective and has more capability of robustness and generalization than state-of-the-art (SOTA) expression recognition methods. Hyperspectral imaging for seed vigor detection faces the challenges of handling high-dimensional spectral data, information loss after dimensionality reduction, and low feature differentiation between vigor levels. To address the above issues, this study proposes an improved dynamic optimize MDS (DO-MDS) dimensionality reduction algorithm based on multidimensional scaling transformation. DO-MDS better preserves key features between samples during dimensionality reduction. Secondly, a dual-stream spectral collaborative attention (DSCA) module is proposed. The DSCA module adopts a dual-modal fusion approach combining global feature capture and local feature enhancement, deepening the characterization capability of spectral features. This study selected commonly used rice seed varieties in Zhejiang Province and constructed three individual spectral datasets and a mixed dataset through aging, spectral acquisition, and germination experiments. The experiments involved using the DO-MDS processed datasets with a convolutional neural network embedded with the DSCA attention module, and the results demonstrate vigor discrimination accuracy rates of 93.85%, 93.4%, and 96.23% for the Chunyou 83, Zhongzao 39, and Zhongzu 53 datasets, respectively, achieving 94.8% for the mixed dataset. This study provides effective strategies for spectral dimensionality reduction in hyperspectral seed vigor detection and enhances the differentiation of spectral information for seeds with similar vigor levels. Robust Federated Learning Against Data Poisoning Attacks: Prevention and Detection of Attacked Nodes

Federated learning (FL) enables collaborative model building among a large number of participants without sharing sensitive data to the central server. Because of its distributed nature, FL has limited control over local data and the corresponding training process. Therefore, it is susceptible to data poisoning attacks where malicious workers use malicious training data to train the model. Furthermore, attackers on the worker side can easily manipulate local data by swapping the labels of training instances, adding noise to training instances, and adding out-of-distribution training instances in the local data to initiate data poisoning attacks. And local workers under such attacks carry incorrect information to the server, poison the global model, and cause misclassifications. So, the prevention and detection of such data poisoning attacks is crucial to build a robust federated training framework. To address this, we propose a prevention strategy in federated learning, namely confident federated learning, to protect workers from such data poisoning attacks. Our proposed prevention strategy at first validates the label quality of local training samples by characterizing and identifying label errors in the local training data, and then excludes the detected mislabeled samples from the local training. To this aim, we experiment with our proposed approach on both the image and audio domains, and our experimental results validated the robustness of our proposed confident federated learning in preventing the data poisoning attacks. Our proposed method can successfully detect the mislabeled training samples with above 85% accuracy and exclude those detected samples from the training set to prevent data poisoning attacks on the local workers. However, our prevention strategy can successfully prevent the attack locally in the presence of a certain percentage of poisonous samples. Beyond that percentage, the prevention strategy may not be effective in preventing attacks. In such cases, detection of the attacked workers is needed. So, in addition to the prevention strategy, we propose a novel detection strategy in the federated learning framework to detect the malicious workers under attack. We propose to create a class-wise cluster representation for every participating worker by utilizing the neuron activation maps of local models and analyze the resulting clusters to filter out the workers under attack before model aggregation. We experimentally demonstrated the efficacy of our proposed detection strategy in detecting workers affected by data poisoning attacks, along with the attack types, e.g., label-flipping or dirty labeling. In addition, our experimental results suggest that the global model could not converge even after a large number of training rounds in the presence of malicious workers, whereas after detecting the malicious workers with our proposed detection method and discarding them from model aggregation, we ensured that the global model achieved convergence within very few training rounds. Furthermore, our proposed approach stays robust under different data distributions and model sizes and does not require prior knowledge about the number of attackers in the system. Full article

Ensuring data integrity and adaptability in aircraft health monitoring (AHM) is vital for safety-critical aviation systems. Traditional digital twin (DT) and federated learning (FL) frameworks, while effective in enabling distributed, privacy-preserving fault detection, lack mechanisms to remove the influence of corrupted or adversarial data once these have been integrated into global models. This paper proposes a novel FL–DT–FU framework that combines digital twin-based subsystem modeling, federated learning for collaborative training, and federated unlearning (FU) to support the post hoc correction of compromised model contributions. The architecture enables real-time monitoring through local DTs, secure model aggregation via FL, and targeted rollback using gradient subtraction, re-aggregation, or constrained retraining. A comprehensive simulation environment is developed to assess the impact of sensor drift, label noise, and adversarial updates across a federated fleet of aircraft. The experimental results demonstrate that FU methods restore up to 95% of model accuracy degraded by data corruption, significantly reducing false negative rates in early fault detection. The proposed system further supports auditability through cryptographic logging, aligning with aviation regulatory standards. This study establishes federated unlearning as a critical enabler for resilient, correctable, and trustworthy AI in next-generation AHM systems. Full article
