To further enhance the economic performance of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), this study develops a model-adaptive model predictive control (MPC) strategy. This strategy leverages the dynamic relationship between proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) output characteristics and temperature to track its optimal operating temperature (OOT), addressing challenges of temperature control accuracy and high energy consumption in the PEMFC thermal management system (TMS). First, PEMFC and TMS models were developed and experimentally validated. Subsequently, the PEMFC power–temperature coupling curve was experimentally determined under multiple operating conditions to serve as the reference trajectory for TMS multi-objective optimization. For MPC controller design, the TMS model was linearized and discretized, yielding a predictive model adaptable to different load demands for stack temperature across the full operating range. A multi-constrained quadratic cost function was formulated, aiming to minimize the deviation of the PEMFC operating temperature from the OOT while accounting for TMS parasitic power consumption. Finally, simulations under Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC) conditions evaluated the OOT tracking performance of both PID and MPC control strategies, as well as their impact on stack efficiency and TMS energy consumption at different ambient temperatures. The results indicate that, compared to PID control, MPC reduces temperature tracking error by 33%, decreases fan and pump speed fluctuations by over 24%, and lowers TMS energy consumption by 10%. These improvements enhance PEMFC operational stability and improve FCV energy efficiency. Full article

This paper addresses the economic–environmental dispatch (EED) problem in DC power grids integrating thermoelectric and photovoltaic generation. A multi-objective optimization model is developed to minimize both fuel costs and CO2 emissions while considering power balance, voltage constraints, generation limits, and thermal line capacities. To overcome the non-convexity introduced by quadratic voltage products in the power flow equations, a convex reformulation is proposed using second-order cone programming (SOCP) with auxiliary variables. This reformulation ensures global optimality and enhances computational efficiency. Two test systems are used for validation: a 6-node DC grid and an 11-node grid incorporating hourly photovoltaic generation. Comparative analyses show that the convex model achieves objective values with errors below 0.01% compared to the original non-convex formulation. For the 11-node system, the integration of photovoltaic generation led to a 24.34% reduction in operating costs (from USD 10.45 million to USD 7.91 million) and a 27.27% decrease in CO2 emissions (from 9.14 million kg to 6.64 million kg) over a 24 h period. These results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed SOCP-based methodology and demonstrate the environmental and economic benefits of renewable integration in DC networks. Full article

The large-scale integration of new energy is an inevitable trend to achieve the low-carbon transformation of power systems. However, the strong randomness of wind power, photovoltaic power, and loads poses severe challenges to the safe and stable operation of systems. Existing studies demonstrate insufficient integration and handling of source-load bilateral uncertainties in wind–solar–fossil fuel storage complementary systems, resulting in difficulties in balancing economy and low-carbon performance in their energy storage configuration. To address this insufficiency, this study proposes an optimal energy storage configuration method considering source-load uncertainties. Firstly, a deterministic bi-level model is constructed: the upper level aims to minimize the comprehensive cost of the system to determine the energy storage capacity and power, and the lower level aims to minimize the system operation cost to solve the optimal scheduling scheme. Then, wind and solar output, as well as loads, are treated as fuzzy variables based on fuzzy chance constraints, and uncertainty constraints are transformed using clear equivalence class processing to establish a bi-level optimization model that considers uncertainties. A differential evolution algorithm and CPLEX are used for solving the upper and lower levels, respectively. Simulation verification in a certain region shows that the proposed method reduces comprehensive cost by 8.9%, operation cost by 10.3%, the curtailment rate of wind and solar energy by 8.92%, and carbon emissions by 3.51%, which significantly improves the economy and low-carbon performance of the system and provides a reference for the future planning and operation of energy systems. Autonomous drones may be called on to perform search-and-rescue operations in environments without access to signals from the global navigation satellite system (GNSS), such as underground mines, subterranean caverns, or confined tunnels. While technology to perform such missions has been demonstrated at events such as DARPA’s Subterranean (Sub-T) Challenge, the hardware deployed for these missions relies on heavy and expensive sensors, such as LiDAR, carried by costly mobile platforms, such as legged robots and heavy-lift multicopters, creating barriers for deployment and training with this technology for all but the wealthiest search-and-rescue organizations. To address this issue, we have developed a custom four-rotor aerial drone platform specifically built around low-cost low-weight sensors in order to minimize costs and maximize flight time for search-and-rescue operations in GNSS-denied environments. We document the various issues we encountered during the building and testing of the vehicle and how they were solved, for instance a novel redesign of the airframe to handle the aggressive yaw maneuvers commanded by the FUEL exploration framework running onboard the drone. The resulting system is successfully validated through a hardware autonomous flight experiment performed in an underground environment without access to GNSS signals. The contribution of the article is to share our experiences with other groups interested in low-cost search-and-rescue drones to help them advance their own programs. Full article

Driven by carbon neutrality and peak carbon policies, hydrogen energy, due to its zero-emission and renewable properties, is increasingly being used in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (H-FCVs). However, the high cost and limited durability of H-FCVs hinder large-scale deployment. Hydrogen internal combustion engine hybrid electric vehicles (H-HEVs) are emerging as a viable alternative. Research on the techno-economics of H-HEVs remains limited, particularly in systematic comparisons with H-FCVs. This paper provides a comprehensive comparison of H-FCVs and H-HEVs in terms of total cost of ownership (TCO) and hydrogen consumption while proposing a multi-objective powertrain parameter optimization model. First, a quantitative model evaluates TCO from vehicle purchase to disposal. Second, a global dynamic programming method optimizes hydrogen consumption by incorporating cumulative energy costs into the TCO model. Finally, a genetic algorithm co-optimizes key design parameters to minimize TCO. Results show that with a battery capacity of 20.5 Ah and an H-FC peak power of 55 kW, H-FCV can achieve optimal fuel economy and hydrogen consumption. However, even with advanced technology, their TCO remains higher than that of H-HEVs. H-FCVs can only become cost-competitive if the unit power price of the fuel cell system is less than 4.6 times that of the hydrogen engine system, assuming negligible fuel cell degradation. In the short term, H-HEVs should be prioritized. Their adoption can also support the long-term development of H-FCVs through a complementary relationship. Full article

Semi-flexible pavement (SFP) is a durable and cost-effective alternative to conventional rigid and flexible pavement and is formed by permeating an open-graded asphalt (OGA) layer with high-fluidity cement grout. The degradation of SFP mattresses due to fuel oil spills can result in significant maintenance costs. Incorporating glass waste (GW) into the construction of SFPs offers an eco-friendly solution, helping to reduce repair costs and environmental impact by conserving natural resources and minimizing landfill waste. The main objective of this research is to investigate the mechanical performance and fuel oil resistance of SFP composites containing different levels of glass aggregate (GlaSFlex composites). Fine glass aggregate (FGA) was replaced with fine virgin aggregate at levels of 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% by mass. The results indicated the feasibility of utilizing FGA as a total replacement (100%) for fine aggregate in the OGA structural layer of SFPs. At 100% FGA, the composite exhibited excellent mechanical performance and durability, including a compressive strength of 8.93 MPa, a Marshall stability exceeding 38 kN, and a stiffness modulus of 19,091 MPa. Furthermore, the composite demonstrated minimal permanent deformation (0.04 mm), a high residual stability of 94.7%, a residual compressive strength of 83.3%, and strong resistance to fuel spillage with a mass loss rate of less than 1%, indicating excellent durability. Before the onset of global warming concerns, the idea of manufacturing electric vehicles on a large scale was not widely considered. However, electric vehicles offer several advantages that have garnered attention. They are environmentally friendly, with simpler drive systems compared to traditional fossil fuel vehicles. Additionally, electric vehicles are highly efficient, with an efficiency of around 90%, in contrast to fossil fuel vehicles, which have an efficiency of about 30% to 35%. The higher energy efficiency of electric vehicles contributes to lower operational costs, which, alongside regulatory incentives and shifting consumer preferences, has increased their strategic importance for many vehicle manufacturers. In this paper, we present a thematic literature review on electric vehicles charging station location planning and scheduling. A systematic literature review across various data sources in the area yielded ninety five research papers for the final review. The research results were analyzed thematically, and three key directions were identified, namely charging station deployment and placement, optimal allocation and scheduling of EV parking lots, and V2G and smart charging systems as the top three themes. Each theme was further investigated to identify key topics, ongoing works, and future trends. It has been found that optimization methods followed by simulation and multi-criteria decision-making are most commonly used for EV infrastructure planning. A multistakeholder perspective is often adopted in these decisions to minimize costs and address the range anxiety of users. The future trend is towards the integration of renewable energy in smart grids, uncertainty modeling of user demand, and use of artificial intelligence for service quality improvement. Full article

To reduce carbon emission levels and improve the low-carbon performance and economic efficiency of Integrated Energy Systems (IESs), this paper introduces oxy-fuel combustion technology to transform traditional units and proposes a low-carbon economic dispatch method. Considering the stepwise carbon trading mechanism, it provides new ideas for promoting energy conservation, emission reduction, and economic operation of integrated energy systems from both technical and policy perspectives. Firstly, the basic principles and energy flow characteristics of oxy-fuel combustion technology are studied, and a model including an air separation unit, an oxygen storage tank, and carbon capture equipment is constructed. Secondly, a two-stage power-to-gas (P2G) model is established to build a joint operation framework for oxy-fuel combustion and P2G. On this basis, a stepwise carbon trading mechanism is introduced to further constrain the carbon emissions of the system, and a low-carbon economic dispatch model with the objective of minimizing the total system operation cost is established. Finally, multiple scenarios are set up for simulation analysis, which verifies that the proposed low-carbon economic optimal dispatch strategy can effectively reduce the system operation cost by approximately 21.4% and improve the system’s carbon emission level with a total carbon emission reduction of about 38.3%. Meanwhile, the introduction of the stepwise carbon trading mechanism reduces the total cost by 12.3% and carbon emissions by 2010.19 tons, increasing the carbon trading revenue. Full article

This study systematically compares the environmental and economic performance of three wastewater treatment systems: constructed wetlands (CWs), microbial fuel cells (MFCs), and their integration (CW–MFC). Lab-scale units of each system were constructed using a multi-media matrix (gravel, zeolite, and granular activated carbon), composite native wetland species (Juncus effusus, Iris sp., and Typha angustifolia), carbon-based electrodes (graphite), and standard inoculum for CW and CW–MFC. The MFC system employed carbon-based electrodes and proton-exchange membrane. The experimental design included a parallel operation of all systems treating domestic wastewater under identical hydraulic and organic loading rates. Environmental impacts were quantified across construction and operational phases using life cycle assessment (LCA) with GaBi software 9.2, employing TRACI 2021 and ReCiPe 2016 methods, while techno-economic analysis (TEA) evaluated capital and operational costs. The key results indicate that CW demonstrates the lowest global warming potential (142.26 kg CO2-eq) due to its reliance on natural biological processes. The integrated CW–MFC system achieved enhanced pollutant removal (82.8%, 87.13%, 78.13%, and 90.3% for COD, NO3, TN, and TP) and bioenergy generation of 2.68 kWh, balancing environmental benefits with superior treatment efficiency. In contrast, the stand-alone MFC shows higher environmental burdens, primarily due to energy-intensive material requirements and fabrication processes. TEA results highlight CW as the most cost-effective solution (USD 627/m3), with CW–MFC emerging as a competitive alternative when considering environmental benefits and operational efficiencies (USD 718/m3). This study highlights the potential of hybrid systems, such as CW–MFC, to advance sustainable wastewater treatment technologies by minimizing environmental impacts and enhancing resource recovery, supporting their broader adoption in future water management strategies. Future research should focus on optimizing materials and energy use to improve scalability and feasibility. Full article

With wildfires becoming more frequent and severe in fire-prone regions affected by warmer and drier climate conditions, reducing hazardous fuels is increasingly recognized as a preventative strategy for promoting sustainability and safeguarding valued resources. Prescribed fire is one of the most cost-effective methods for reducing hazardous fuels and hence wildfire severity, yet empirical research on its effectiveness at minimizing damage to highly valued resources and assets (HVRAs) remains limited. The overarching objective of this study was to evaluate wildfire severity under differing weather conditions across various HVRAs characterized by diverse land uses, vegetation types, and treatment histories. The findings from this study reveal that wildfire severity was generally lower in areas treated with prescribed fire, although the significance of this effect varied among HVRAs and diminished as post-treatment duration increased. The wildland–urban interface experienced the greatest initial reduction in wildfire severity following prescribed fire, but burn severity increased more rapidly over time relative to other HVRAs. Elevated drought conditions had a significant effect, increasing wildfire severity across all HVRAs. The implications of this study underscore the role of prescribed fire in promoting sustainable land management by reducing wildfire severity and safeguarding both natural and built environments, particularly in the expanding wildland–urban interface. Due to the limitations of current battery technologies—such as lower energy density and high cost compared to fossil fuels—electric vehicles (EVs) face constraints in applications requiring extended range or heavy payloads, such as refuse trucks. As a midterm solution, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) combine internal combustion engines (ICEs) and electric powertrains to enable flexible energy usage, particularly in urban duty cycles characterized by frequent stopping and idling. This study introduces a model-based energy management strategy using the Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS), tailored for a retrofitted series hybrid refuse truck. A conventional ISUZU NPR 10 truck was instrumented to collect real-world driving and operational data, which guided the development of a vehicle-specific ECMS controller. The proposed strategy was evaluated over five driving cycles—including both standardized and measured urban scenarios—under varying load conditions: Tare Mass (TM) and Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM). Compared with a rule-based control approach, ECMS demonstrated up to 14% improvement in driving range and significant reductions in exhaust gas emissions (CO, NOx, and CO2). The inclusion of auxiliary load modeling further enhances the realism of the simulation results. These findings validate ECMS as a viable strategy for optimizing fuel economy and reducing emissions in hybrid refuse truck applications. Full article

The active safety of tractors remains a major concern in rural road environments, where tractor drivers face high crash risks due to limited vehicle visibility. In Serbia, 1.4% of crashes involve tractors, mainly due to poor visibility (64.3%), lack of beacon lights, unsafe overtaking, and unmarked stopped tractors (14.3% each). These issues reduce safety, increase fuel consumption and emissions, and cause economic losses. A driving simulator study with 117 drivers examined how visibility equipment affects speed perception. The results showed that 20 km/h was best estimated with all visibility aids, while 10 km/h was most accurately judged with only the slow-moving vehicle emblem. These findings emphasize the potential for simple, cost-effective visibility measures to enhance the active safety of tractors in mixed rural traffic conditions. By enhancing tractor visibility, these measures reduce crash risks, minimize unnecessary acceleration and deceleration, and lower fuel consumption and emissions associated with traffic disturbances. Furthermore, by preventing crashes, these solutions contribute to reducing resource consumption in crash-related medical care, vehicle repairs, and infrastructure damage. Integrating improved visibility equipment into rural traffic policy can significantly enhance tractors’ active safety and reduce the risk of crashes in agricultural regions. Full article

This study presents a multi-objective predictive energy management system (EMS) for optimizing hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) in autonomous marine vessels. The objective is to minimize fuel consumption and emissions while maximizing renewable energy usage and pure-electric sailing durations. The EMS combines nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) with metaheuristic optimizers—Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA)—and is benchmarked against a conventional rule-based (RB) method. The HRES architecture comprises photovoltaic arrays, vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs), diesel engines, generators, and a battery storage system. A ship dynamics model was used to represent propulsion power under realistic sea conditions. Simulations were conducted using real-world operational and environmental datasets, with state prediction enhanced by an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). Performance is evaluated using marine-relevant indicators—fuel consumption; emissions; battery state of charge (SOC); and emission cost—and validated using standard regression metrics. The NMPC-GWO algorithm consistently outperformed both NMPC-GA and RB approaches, achieving high prediction accuracy and greater energy efficiency. These results confirm the reliability and optimization capability of predictive EMS frameworks in reducing emissions and operational costs in autonomous maritime operations. Full article

Learning from Arctic Microgrids: Cost and Resiliency Projections for Renewable Energy Expansion with Hydrogen and Battery Storage

Electricity in rural Alaska is provided by more than 200 standalone microgrid systems powered predominantly by diesel generators. Incorporating renewable energy generation and storage to these systems can reduce their reliance on costly imported fuel and improve sustainability; however, uncertainty remains about optimal grid architectures to minimize cost, including how and when to incorporate long-duration energy storage. This study implements a novel, multi-pronged approach to assess the techno-economic feasibility of future energy pathways in the community of Kotzebue, which has already successfully deployed solar photovoltaics, wind turbines, and battery storage systems. Using real community load, resource, and generation data, we develop a series of comparison models using the HOMER Pro software tool to evaluate microgrid architectures to meet over 90% of the annual community electricity demand with renewable generation, considering both battery and hydrogen energy storage. We find that near-term planned capacity expansions in the community could enable over 50% renewable generation and reduce the total cost of energy. Additional build-outs to reach 75% renewable generation are shown to be competitive with current costs, but further capacity expansion is not currently economical. We additionally include a cost sensitivity analysis and a storage capacity sizing assessment that suggest hydrogen storage may be economically viable if battery costs increase, but large-scale seasonal storage via hydrogen is currently unlikely to be cost-effective nor practical for the region considered. While these findings are based on data and community priorities in Kotzebue, we expect this approach to be relevant to many communities in the Arctic and Sub-Arctic regions working to improve energy reliability, sustainability, and security. The proposed study incorporates a stochastic demand side management (SDSM) strategy for a self-sufficient residential system powered from a PV source with a hybrid battery–hydrogen storage system to minimize the total degradation costs associated with key components, including Li-io batteries, fuel cells, and PEM electrolyzers. The uncertainty in demand forecasting is addressed through a scenario-based generation to enhance the robustness and accuracy of the proposed method. Then, stochastic optimization was employed to determine the optimal operating schedules for deferable appliances and optimal water heater (WH) settings. The optimization problem was solved using a genetic algorithm (GA), which efficiently explores the solution space to determine the optimal operating schedules and reduce degradation costs. The proposed SDSM technique is validated through MATLAB 2020 simulations, demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing component degradation costs, minimizing load shedding, and reducing excess energy generation while maintaining user comfort. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method achieved total degradation cost reductions of 16.66% and 42.6% for typical summer and winter days, respectively, in addition to a reduction of the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) by about 22.5% compared to the average performance of 10,000 random operation scenarios.
