In the present contribution, Hot-rolled and annealed ferritic stainless steel T4003 with three distinct Mo contents (0%, 0.1%, and 0.2%) served as the research subject. Weldability tests were implemented by means of gas metal arc welding. Coupled with microstructural characterization, mechanical property assessments, and electrochemical corrosion tests, the regulatory mechanism of Mo on the microstructure and properties of the HAZ was systematically elucidated. Results demonstrate that the influence of Mo content on the evolution of the coarse-grained region structure of heat affected zone becomes significant. The addition of 0.1% Mo refines the grains, increasing the fraction of lath martensite to 70–75% while limiting the maximum width of the coarse-grained zone to 0.64 mm. Meantime, the addition promotes the precipitation of (Nb, Ti, Mo) (C, N) composite carbonitrides, enhancing overall performance through synergistic grain refinement and second-phase strengthening. The sample with 0.1% Mo exhibits an average low-temperature impact energy of 16.3 J at −40 °C, with the highest Vickers hardness in the HAZ, favorable strength–plasticity synergy of the welded joint, and optimal corrosion resistance. The coarse-grained zone of the 0.2% Mo sample is dominated by coarse δ-ferrite and features a larger width, and the HAZ shows inferior mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The precipitated phases in the 0.2% Mo segregate along the grain boundaries and distribute in a chain-like distribution, exacerbating the deterioration of material properties. These findings provide a technical reference for optimizing the composition design of T4003 ferritic stainless steel and ensuring its safe application in railway freight vehicles. Full article

The distributor valve is one of the most important components in the pneumatic braking system of trains. It performs the functions of filling and releasing the brake cylinder. The distributor valve most widely used on Bulgarian railways operates in two positions, respectively, in “freight train” mode (G) and in “passenger train mode” (P). The difference between them is determined by the different times for filling and emptying the brake cylinder. These times affect the moment of engagement of the braking system of each wagon in the train composition. This has a significant impact on the longitudinal forces obtained in the couplers. This paper is dedicated to the analysis of the influence of the distributor valve position on the longitudinal forces. A simulation study of the longitudinal behavior of a train set was carried out in Simulink®, which consists of a locomotive and 43 freight wagons attached to it, with 80 t gross mass of each wagon. The railway cars are linked by elastic elements with nonlinear characteristics. The results represent the distribution of longitudinal forces in time. They are used for the investigation of the longitudinal dynamics of the train, with the aim of improving the running-dynamic qualities of the train during braking. Full article

This study investigates the influence of roadway geometry and environmental conditions on traffic crash frequency along a 57 km mountainous segment of the BR-116/SP (Régis Bittencourt Highway), one of Brazil’s most critical freight and passenger corridors. A Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) with a Negative Binomial distribution was developed using monthly data aggregated by highway segment. Explanatory variables included traffic exposure, geometric design characteristics, and meteorological factors. The results revealed that horizontal curvature and longitudinal grade are key determinants of crash occurrence and that the interaction between these factors substantially amplifies crash risk. Specifically, segments with combined tight curvature (radius < 500 m) and moderate-to-steep grades showed up to a 4.3-fold increase in expected crash frequency compared with straight or flat sections. The model achieved satisfactory fit (RMSE = 1.273) and provided a robust framework for identifying high-risk locations. The findings highlight the importance of geometric consistency and integrated safety management strategies, contributing to sustainable transport management and offering methodological and practical contributions to data-driven road safety policies in Brazil. Construction logistics is central to optimising site operations and delivery processes, yet the need to meet dynamic site requirements while minimising transport movements presents a persistent challenge. Transport efficiency can be improved through both strategic and operational interventions at the business-unit level. This study examines transport-related distribution practices within the plasterboard supply chain in Auckland, New Zealand, and evaluates opportunities to enhance efficiency using established performance metrics. By integrating supply chain management and circular economy principles through spatial analysis and supply chain modelling, the research demonstrates the potential to achieve up to a three-fold improvement in vehicle capacity utilisation. The operational analysis—focused on general-purpose (non-specialist) transport—is grounded in real-world transport data that extends beyond conventional trip-centricity to capture a broader supply chain perspective. This approach addresses a key methodological gap by empirically validating analytical models in a specific operational context. In addition to quantifying efficiency gains, the study identifies context-specific inefficiencies that constrain construction transport performance and proposes sustainable solutions that extend beyond technological fixes. These include strategic organisational measures for improving fleet management, transport contracting and pricing, collaborative planning across supply chain actors, waste management practices, and collaborative logistics through integrated warehousing. By linking technical analysis with business-oriented insights, the research provides proof-of-concept for practical, scalable strategies for improved construction logistics and wider freight transport efficiency grounded in empirical evidence. This study analyses the operational efficiency of urban loading and unloading zones (LUZs) by applying queuing theory without waiting (Erlang B model) and incorporating weighted occupancy time as a fundamental metric. Six scenarios were evaluated in an urban block in Zaragoza, Spain: three using field data obtained through real world observation and three simulated. The system’s performance was compared under conditions of free access with a model that strictly enforces the municipal ordinance for Urban Goods Distribution, restricting access to authorized vehicles and maximum dwell times. The objective of this study is to evaluate the operational performance of different LUZ configurations, assessing how real versus regulation-compliant usage affects system capacity, estimated loss rates, and the spatial temporal productivity of the zones. The M/M/1/1 model in Kendall notation is suitable for representing this type of queuing-free urban environment, and weighted occupancy time proves to be a robust indicator for evaluating the performance of heterogeneous zones. The scenario assessment confirms that the sizing of these zones is correct if their proper use is guaranteed. The study concludes with recommendations and best practices for city governance in formulating urban policies aimed at developing more efficient and sustainable logistics to control land use in the LUZ. This study investigated the impact of a Yard Management System (YMS) implemented at a third-party logistics distribution center in the United States. Five years of operational data (2018–2022), including 72 monthly observations of inbound and outbound freight performance (measured in pounds) and detention occurrences (measured in US dollars), were analyzed using one-way ANOVA to assess pre- and post-implementation performance. The results indicated that the YMS significantly improved inbound and outbound freight volume, reduced detention occurrences, and enhanced operational efficiency within the third-party logistics distribution center. These findings suggest that YMS can be an effective tool for enhancing yard-level operational efficiency, reducing delays, and supporting broader supply chain optimization strategies in third-party logistics environments. Background: This study analyzes modal distribution patterns across Europe and 28 European countries, employing clustering analysis to identify trends in transport mode utilization. The research quantifies logistics diversification, examining extreme cases and addressing gaps in understanding modal transitions affecting environmental and economic performance. Methods: Statistical testing using compositional data transformations revealed significant differences between modal distributions (p < 0.001), justifying country-specific and European-level assessments. K-means clustering was applied to identify groups of countries with similar modal distribution patterns. Results: Maritime and road transport constitute the predominant modes across all analyzed countries in the study period. Among terrestrial modes, road transport dominates universally, exhibiting systematic growth, while rail transport experienced a corresponding decline. This trend directly contradicts European sustainability objectives promoting modal shift toward environmentally superior alternatives. Romania demonstrates the highest logistics diversification with the most balanced modal distribution, while Portugal exhibits the lowest diversification due to maritime transport dominance. K-means clustering positioned Portugal within a maritime-dominated group alongside Greece, Cyprus, and Ireland, reflecting similar geographical constraints and distribution patterns. Conclusions: The findings reveal critical aspects requiring further investigation concerning European modal distribution trends that challenge current policy effectiveness, highlighting the divergence between observed transport patterns and stated sustainability goals. These results provide essential insights for addressing persistent modal shift challenges in European transport systems. Full article

This study presents an initial feasibility concept paper for a proposed crosstie system, an innovative railroad crosstie reinforcement system designed to reduce the stresses transmitted to the underlying ballast. While not developed for a specific industry client, the proposed crosstie system lays the groundwork for patent application and potential commercialization, offering a novel alternative to conventional railroad construction. Finite Element Analysis demonstrated that this system can reduce effective stress on the ballast by up to 24%, effectively making train loads appear lighter to the substructure. The design of the proposed system focuses on mitigating the excessive stresses transmitted from crossties to the ballast layer in heavy axle load (HAL) freight rail operations. The goal was to create a reinforcement mechanism that is modular, compatible with existing track infrastructure, and capable of reducing maintenance costs by distributing loads more effectively across the ballast and subgrade. The findings indicate that this system is not only the most cost-effective and sustainable solution but also holds promise for reducing fixed stock investment, minimizing downtime for track maintenance, and enabling expanded rail network connectivity. These results support continued research and investment in the system’s development and deployment. Full article

The growing demand for fast and sustainable urban deliveries has accelerated exploration of the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles as viable logistics solutions for the last mile. This study investigates the integration of a distributed multi-agent system with a structured three-dimensional Urban Aerial Network (3D-UAN) for drone delivery operations. The proposed architecture models each drone as an autonomous agent operating within predefined air corridors and communication protocols. Unlike traditional approaches, which rely on simplified 2D models or centralized control systems, this research exploits a multi-layered 3D network structure combined with decentralized decision-making for improving scalability, safety, and responsiveness in complex environments. Through agent-based simulations, this study evaluates the operational performance of the proposed system under varying fleet size conditions, focusing on travel times and system scalability. Preliminary results demonstrate that the potential of this approach in supporting efficient, adaptive, resilient logistics within Urban Air Mobility frameworks depends on both the size of the fleet operating in the 3D-UAN and constraints linked to the current regulations and technological properties, such as the maximum allowed operational height. These findings contribute to ongoing efforts to define robust operational architectures and simulation methodologies for next-generation urban freight transport systems. Full article

Cities are complex systems with socioeconomic activities exhibiting diverse spatial distributions, where selecting an appropriate observation scale is vital for understanding urban complexity. However, the traditional methods for this task are often limited, either because they rely on subjective judgments or lack generalizability before being applied across the diverse functions of a city. To address this issue, we introduce a complexity–heterogeneity balancing method, which employs renormalization group techniques to generate distribution matrices across different scales, striking a balance between complexity and heterogeneity to objectively identify appropriate observation scales. We implement this method on freight, enterprise and restaurant distribution data derived from major Chinese cities to identify their appropriate spatial scales. The results properly reflect the characteristic spatial organization structure of each urban function, meaning that the method provides a robust framework for determining appropriate scales in urban spatial analysis tasks. Our study has potential applications in enhancing the logistics optimization, industrial zoning and commercial planning processes and identifying urban functions and morphological features, thereby contributing to sustainable urban development. Rising carbon emissions from international road freight transport in the EU—increasing from 29.4% in 2023 to 31.4% in 2025 under the With Existing Measures (WEM) Road Transport scenario—necessitate the implementation of additional measures within the framework of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). For Ukraine, operating under martial law and pursuing a post-war green recovery of its transport and trade sectors, the adoption of EU experience in distributed generation (DG) from renewable energy sources (RESs) is particularly critical. This study evaluates the synergy between energy-efficient and low-carbon management in logistics chains for road freight transportation in Ukraine, drawing on EU evidence of DG based on RESs. To this end, a decoupling analysis was conducted to identify the factors influencing low-carbon and energy-efficient management of logistics chains in Ukraine’s freight transport sector. Under wartime conditions, the EU practice of utilising electric vehicles (EVs) as an auxiliary source of renewable energy for distributed electricity generation within microgrids—through Grid-to-Vehicle (G2V) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technologies—was modelled. The results confirm the relevance of RES-based DG and the integration of EVs as a means of enhancing energy resilience in resource-constrained and conflict-affected regions. The scientific novelty of this research lies in identifying the conditions for achieving energy-efficient and low-carbon effects in the design of logistics chains through RES-based distributed generation, grounded in circular and inclusive economic development. The practical significance of the findings lies in formulating a replicable model for diversifying low-carbon fuel sources via the development of distributed generation of electricity based on renewable resources, providing a scalable paradigm for energy-limited and conflict-affected areas. Future research should focus on developing innovative logistics chain models that integrate DG and renewable energy use into Ukraine’s transport system. Full article

The rapid growth of e-commerce and the pandemic-driven surge in deliveries have intensified the challenges last-mile logistics poses to urban areas. Road transport, the predominant delivery mode, is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Despite a downward trend since 2008, emissions rose in 2022, reflecting an increased mobility demand. Light commercial vehicles and trucks impact air and noise pollution due to their high emissions and noise levels. Innovative solutions, such as cargo bikes (CBs), have emerged as sustainable alternatives to mitigate these effects. This paper reports a brief literature review on CBs and evaluates their environmental, economic, and social benefits by comparing real-life data from a shipping company operating with CBs in central Rome to simulated data for motorized delivery vehicles. By analyzing their potential to reduce emissions, improve urban livability, and lower operational costs, this study seeks to raise awareness on CBs’ sustainability as a viable alternative for last-mile logistics. Highlighting these advantages can support policymakers, businesses, and urban planners in fostering a transition to more sustainable urban mobility solutions. Full article

With the surge in urban logistics demand, traditional surface transportation faces challenges, such as traffic congestion and environmental pollution. Leveraging metro systems in metropolitan areas for both passenger commuting and underground logistics presents a promising solution. The metro-based underground logistics system (M-ULS), characterized by extensive coverage and independent right-of-way, has emerged as a potential approach for optimizing urban freight transport. However, existing studies primarily focus on single-line scenarios, lacking in-depth analyses of multi-tier network coordination and dynamic demand responsiveness. This study proposes an optimization framework based on mixed-integer programming and an improved ICSA to address three key challenges in metro freight network planning: balancing passenger and freight demand, optimizing multi-tier node layout, and enhancing computational efficiency for large-scale problem solving. By integrating E-TOPSIS for demand assessment and an adaptive mutation mechanism based on a normal distribution, the solution space is reduced from five to three dimensions, significantly improving algorithm convergence and global search capability. Using the Nanjing metro network as a case study, this research compares the optimization performance of independent line and transshipment-enabled network scenarios. The results indicate that the networked scenario (daily cost: CNY 1.743 million) outperforms the independent line scenario (daily cost: CNY 1.960 million) in terms of freight volume (3.214 million parcels/day) and road traffic alleviation rate (89.19%). However, it also requires a more complex node configuration. This study provides both theoretical and empirical support for planning high-density urban underground logistics systems, demonstrating the potential of multimodal transport networks and intelligent optimization algorithms. As a core component of high-speed trains, the traction drive system is also one of the main sources of both pass-by noise and interior noise. Current research primarily focuses on the modeling and design of its dynamic characteristics, while studies on its sound radiation remain relatively scarce. Existing investigations mainly rely on experimental and finite element methods. This paper proposes a rapid modeling method for the sound radiation of traction drive systems and analyzes the acoustic characteristics under different train speeds and gear helix angles. Taking an electric freight locomotive operating on China’s railways as the subject, the primary noise sources were identified through real-vehicle testing, thereby simplifying the non-dominant noise sources. By integrating a gear system dynamic model with theoretical models of gear meshing noise and motor noise, the proposed approach avoids the complexity and high computational cost associated with traditional finite element methods. The results show that at lower train speeds, the main noise source is the motor, while at higher speeds, it is the gearbox. As the train speed and helix angle increase, the radiated sound pressure of the traction drive system first increases and then decreases, though the sound field distribution and directivity remain largely unchanged. Rural areas often lack convenient delivery logistics services, which has become a major obstacle to their economic development. Network design initiatives that synergize passenger and freight transport have been identified as effective solutions to address this challenge. Building upon this initiative, this study investigates a novel three-echelon location-routing problem that synergizes trucks and fixed-route buses (3E-LRP-TF). The model is designed with an innovative operational mode that enables fixed-route buses and trucks to travel in a parallel manner, representing a valuable extension to traditional integrated passenger–freight distribution network design. A mixed-integer nonlinear programming model with the objective of minimizing the total network cost is constructed to formulate the problem. Furthermore, a bottom-up three-phase adaptive large neighborhood search (ALNS) algorithm is designed to solve the problem. A final empirical study was conducted, with Qingchuan County in China serving as a case study, with the aim of validating the effectiveness of the proposed model and algorithm. The results show that, compared with using trucks alone, the synergistic network system has the potential to reduce costs by more than 5% for parcel pickup and delivery services. The proposed algorithm can address larger-scale problems and exhibits better performance with regard to solution quality and efficiency. Sensitivity analysis indicates that the parcel transport capacity of bus routes exerts a nonlinear effect on total costs, and changes in service radius result in trade-offs between cost and accessibility. These findings provide actionable insights for policymakers and logistics operators. Full article
