Vegetable oils are essential for human nutrition and industrial applications. With growing global demand, increasing oil content in oilseed crops has become a top priority. This review synthesizes recent progress in understanding the genetic, environmental, and molecular mechanisms regulating oil content, and presents biotechnological strategies to enhance oil accumulation in major oilseed crops. Oil biosynthesis is governed by intricate genetic–environmental interactions. Environmental factors and agronomic practices significantly impact oil accumulation dynamics. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified key loci and candidate genes involved in lipid biosynthesis pathways. Transcription factors and epigenetic regulators further fine-tune oil accumulation. Biotechnological approaches, including marker-assisted selection (MAS) and CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing, have successfully generated high-oil-content variants. Future research should integrate multi-omics data, leverage AI-based predictive breeding, and apply precision genome editing to optimize oil yield while maintaining seed quality. This review provides critical references for the genetic improvement and breeding of high- and ultra-high-oil-content varieties in oilseed crops. Full article

Geographical origin authentication of agrifood products is essential for ensuring their quality, preventing fraud, and maintaining consumers’ trust. In this study, we used proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and excitation–emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy combined with chemometric methods for the geographical origin characterization of olive drupes and leaves from different Tuscany subregions, where olive oil production is relevant. Single-block approaches were implemented for individual datasets, using principal component analysis (PCA) for data visualization and Soft Independent Modeling of Class Analogy (SIMCA) for sample classification. 1H NMR spectroscopy provided detailed metabolomic profiles, identifying key compounds such as polyphenols and organic acids that contribute to geographical differentiation. EEM fluorescence spectroscopy, in combination with Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC), revealed distinctive fluorescence signatures associated with polyphenolic content. A mid-level data fusion strategy, integrating the common dimensions (ComDim) method, was explored to improve the models’ performance. The results demonstrated that both spectroscopic techniques independently provided valuable insights in terms of geographical characterization, while data fusion further improved the model performances, particularly for olive drupes. Notably, this study represents the first attempt to apply EEM fluorescence for the geographical classification of olive drupes and leaves, highlighting its potential as a complementary tool in geographic origin authentication. The integration of advanced spectroscopic and chemometric methods offers a reliable approach for the differentiation of samples from closely related areas at a subregional level. Full article

Background: Obesity is associated with insulin resistance (IR) and characterized by impaired activation of the PI3K/AKT route and glucose uptake. Elevated plasma levels of palmitic acid (PA) diminish insulin signaling in vitro and in vivo. Origanum vulgare L. essential oil (OVEO) is rich in monoterpenes with protective effects against IR. Objective: The study aimed to assess total phenols content and antioxidant activity of OVEO and its cytotoxicity, as well as its effect on insulin signaling and glucose uptake in PA-treated adipocytes. Methods: The quantification of total phenolic content was determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu method, while the antioxidant capacity of OVEO was assessed by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) methods. The cytotoxicity of OVEO (0.1–10 µg/mL) was assessed using the MTS assay. SW872 adipocytes were incubated with 0.4 mM PA for 24 h, with or without a 2 h preincubation of OVEO, and then stimulated with insulin (100 nM, 10 min) or a vehicle. Phosphorylation of Tyr-IRS-1, Ser-AKT, and Thr-AS160 was analyzed by Western blot, and glucose uptake was measured using 2-NBDG. Results: OVEO contained phenols and exhibits antioxidant capacity. All the concentrations of OVEO assessed were not cytotoxic on SW872 adipocytes. PA decreased basal phospho-AS160 as well as insulin-stimulated phospho-IRS1, phospho-AKT, phospho-AS160 and glucose uptake, while OVEO co-treatment enhanced these markers. Conclusions: These findings suggest a beneficial effect of OVEO on the PA-impaired insulin pathway and glucose uptake, which might be explained by its phenolic content and antioxidant capacity, highlighting its potential as a complementary therapeutic agent for IR and related metabolic disorders. Cinnamomum camphora is an ecologically and economically significant species, highly valued for its essential oil production and environmental benefits. Although a tissue culture system has been established for C. camphora, large-scale propagation remains limited due to the inconsistent formation of adventitious roots (ARs). This study investigated AR formation from callus tissue, focusing on associated physiological changes and gene expression dynamics. During AR induction, contents of soluble sugars and proteins decreased, alongside reduced activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and polyphenol oxidase (PPO). Levels of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and abscisic acid (ABA) decreased significantly throughout AR formation. Zeatin riboside (ZR) levels initially declined and then rose, whereas gibberellic acid (GA) levels displayed the opposite trend. Comparative transcriptomic and temporal expression analyses identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs), which were grouped into four distinct expression patterns. KEGG pathway enrichment indicated that 67 DEGs are involved in plant hormone signaling pathways and that 38 DEGs are involved in the starch and sucrose metabolism pathway. Additionally, protein–protein interaction network (PPI) analysis revealed ten key regulatory genes, which are mainly involved in auxin, cytokinin, GA, ABA, and ethylene signaling pathways. The reliability of the transcriptome data was further validated by quantitative real-time PCR. Overall, this study provides new insights into the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying AR formation in C. camphora and offers valuable guidance for optimizing tissue culture systems. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro efficacy of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized by bioreduction using lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) essential oil against multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria isolated from an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Methods: The essential oil was extracted and characterized by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Antioxidant activity was assessed using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, the 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assay, and total phenolic content. AgNPs (3 mM and 6 mM silver nitrate) were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Bacterial isolates were obtained from ICU surfaces and personal protective equipment (PPE). Results: The essential oil presented citral A, citral B, and β-myrcene as major components (97.5% of identified compounds). AgNPs at 3 mM showed smaller size (87 nm), lower Polydispersity Index (0.14), and higher colloidal stability (−23 mV). The 6 mM formulation (147 nm; PDI 0.91; −10 mV) was more effective against a strain of Enterococcus spp. resistant to all antibiotics tested. FTIR analysis indicated the presence of O–H, C=O, and C–O groups involved in nanoparticle stabilization. Discussion: The higher antimicrobial efficacy of the 6 mM formulation was attributed to the greater availability of active AgNPs. Conclusions: The green synthesis of AgNPs using C. citratus essential oil proved effective against MDR bacteria and represents a sustainable and promising alternative for microbiological control in healthcare environments. This research analyzes the innovative development of carnauba wax coatings enriched with essential oils (EOs: lemon, orange, grapefruit, clove, oregano, and cinnamon) or fruit by-products (FBPs: avocado, tomato, carrot, orange, lemon, and grapefruit) to improve postharvest preservation of organic oranges and lemons. Six EOs and six FBPs were evaluated for total phenolic content (TPC) and in vitro antifungal activity against Penicillium digitatum. Based on results, grapefruit, oregano, and clove EOs were selected for lemons, while avocado, orange, and grapefruit FBPs were selected for oranges. An in vivo test at 20 °C for 15 days with carnauba wax coatings assessed antifungal performance. Clove EO and avocado FBP showed strong in vitro inhibition and consistent hyphal suppression (~100 and ~82%, respectively). In vivo, coatings with grapefruit EO and avocado FBP significantly reduced fungal decay and sporulation (~75%) in lemons and oranges, respectively. Coated fruits also retained weight losses by ~25% compared to uncoated ones. These findings suggest that phenolic-rich natural extracts, especially from agro-industrial residues like avocado peels, offer a promising and sustainable strategy for postharvest citrus disease control. Further studies should test coating effectiveness in large-scale trials under refrigeration combined with other preservation strategies. Full article

The parameters and plant habitat characteristics of glandular trichomes could allow for faster and cheaper identification and selection of more essential oil-rich wild aromatic plants for further cultivation. This study aimed to establish relationships between the parameters of peltate glandular trichomes and essential oil content in commercially potential Thymus pulegioides in relation to plant sex, chemotype, and habitat characteristics. In total, 124 T. pulegioides plants belonging to different chemotypes and sexes and collected from 23 natural habitats were analysed. Essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation, and a light microscope was used to investigate parameters of peltate glandular trichomes in upper and lower leaf epidermises. For investigation of the dynamics of the parameters of peltate glandular trichomes, T. pulegioides were growing in open ground under the same environmental conditions. Results demonstrated that the essential oil percentage in phenolic chemotype plants was higher than in plants of a non-phenolic chemotype. Females and hermaphrodites did not significantly differ according to essential oil percentage. Cover abundance of T. pulegioides negatively affects the density and diameter of peltate glandular trichomes and the essential oil percentage in T. pulegioides. The parameters of peltate trichomes in the upper leaf epidermis could be anatomical markers, helping to select T. pulegioides with higher essential oil contents from natural habitats as promising candidates as new crops. Antimicrobial Activity of Greek Native Essential Oils Against Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Antibiotic Resistance Strains Harboring pNorm Plasmid, mecA, mcr-1 and blaOXA Genes

Background/Objectives: The rapid emergence of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli in food and clinical environments necessitates new, clean-label antimicrobials. This study assessed eight Greek native essential oils—oregano, thyme, dittany, rosemary, peppermint, lavender, cistus and helichrysum—for activity against six genetically and phenotypically diverse E. coli strains (reference, pNorm, mecA, mcr-1, blaOXA and O157:H7). We aimed to identify oils with broad-spectrum efficacy and clarify the chemical constituents responsible. Methods: Disk-diffusion assays measured inhibition zones at dilutions from 50% to 1.56% (v/v). MIC and MBC values were determined by broth microdilution. GC–MS profiling identified dominant components, and Spearman rank-order correlations (ρ) linked composition to activity. Shapiro–Wilk tests (W = 0.706–0.913, p ≤ 0.002) indicated non-normal data, so strain comparisons used Kruskal–Wallis one-way ANOVA with Dunn’s post hoc and Bonferroni correction. Results: Oregano, thyme and dittany oils—rich in carvacrol and thymol—exhibited the strongest activity, with MIC/MBC ≤ 0.0625% (v/v) against all strains and inhibition zones > 25 mm at 50%. No strain-specific differences were detected (H = 0.30–3.85; p = 0.998–0.571; padj = 1.000). Spearman correlations confirmed that carvacrol and thymol content strongly predicted efficacy (ρ = 0.527–0.881, p < 0.001). Oils dominated by non-phenolic terpenes (rosemary, peppermint, lavender, cistus, helichrysum) showed minimal or no activity. Conclusions: Phenolic-rich EOs maintain potent, strain-independent antimicrobial effects—including against multidrug-resistant and O157:H7 strains—via a multi-target mode that overcomes classical resistance. Their low-dose efficacy and GRAS status support their use as clean-label food preservatives or adjuncts to antibiotics or bacteriophages to combat antimicrobial resistance. Full article

The present study aimed to develop biodegradable films formulated with pectin/carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and cinnamon essential oil, investigating the effects of CP treatment time on the properties of the films. The developed films were used as packaging to evaluate the shelf life of chicken meat. Biodegradable films were produced from a film-forming solution containing pectin/CMC, glycerol (30%), and cinnamon essential oil (2%). All formulations included the essential oil, and the control group corresponded to the film that was not subjected to CP treatment. The CP treatments were applied at 22.5 L/min, 20 kV, and 80 kHz for 10, 20, and 30 min. The results showed that increasing CP treatment time led to a progressive reduction in apparent viscosity, indicating improved homogeneity of the polymer system. Hydrophobicity increased with treatment time, as shown by a higher contact angle (from 51.15° to 62.38°), resulting in lower water solubility. Mechanical properties were also enhanced, with tensile strength rising from 3.29 MPa to 6.74 MPa after 30 min of CP. Biodegradability improved with treatment time, reaching 99.51% mass loss after 15 days for the longest exposure. Films produced from the solution treated for 30 min (FCP30) were most effective in extending the shelf life of chicken breast fillets, reducing lipid oxidation (TBARS: 61.9%), peroxide content (58.7%), and microbial spoilage (TVB-N: 59.2%) compared to the untreated film. Overall, the results highlight the importance of CP treatment time as a key factor in enhancing film performance, supporting its application in sustainable active packaging. Full article

Melissa officinalis L. (Lamiaceae) is a perennial plant species widely used in the pharmaceutical and food industries, particularly valued for its sedative properties. This study investigates the impact of synthetic mulch film and planting density as two experimental factors on agronomic performance, raw material quality, and economic efficiency in lemon balm production. The experiment was conducted at three locations in Serbia (L1: Bačko Novo Selo, L2: Bavanište, L3: Vilandrica) from 2022 to 2024, using two planting densities on synthetic mulch film (F1: 8.3 plants m−2; F2: 11.4 plants m−2) and a control treatment without mulch (C). The synthetic mulch film used was a synthetic black polypropylene film (Agritela Black, 90 g/m2), uniformly applied in strips across the cultivation area, covering approximately 78% of the soil surface. The results showed consistent increases in morphological parameters and yield across the years. Plant height in F1 and F2 treatments ranged from 65 to 75 cm, while in the control it reached up to 50 cm (2022–2024). Fresh biomass yield varied from 13.4 g per plant (C) to 378.08 g per plant (F2), and dry biomass yield from 60.3 g (C) to 125.4 g (F2). The highest essential oil content was observed in F2 (1.2% in 2022), while the control remained at 0.8%. The F2 treatment achieved complete weed suppression throughout the experiment without the use of herbicides, demonstrating both agronomic and ecological advantages. Economic evaluation revealed that F2 generated the highest cumulative profit (€142,164.5) compared to the control (€65,555.3). Despite higher initial investment, F2 had the most favorable cost–benefit ratio in the long term. This study highlights the crucial influence of mulching and planting density on optimizing lemon balm production across diverse climatic and soil conditions, while also underscoring the importance of sustainable, non-chemical weed management strategies in lemon balm cultivation. The present work was performed in greenhouse conditions, and 10 ppm Se, 10 ppm B, and 100 mM salinity treatments were used. The results showed significant variations in the agronomic traits of oregano among the treatments and harvests. The 10 ppm Se×10 ppm B treatment showed improvements over other properties for morphological and yield properties with protein, essential oil, and Zn contents, and B×salinity outperformed other treatments, with variations in branch number enhancement. The analysis revealed that salinity treatment could effectively enhance Na and Ca contents. B treatment significantly improved Mn (12,443.51–18,739.77 ppm), Mg (406.85–632.79 ppm), Fe (61.43–885.06 ppm), Cu (5.02–9.32 ppm), and B (37.67–114.28 ppm) element contents. The highest K content was found from Se treatment. The effects of the Se, B, and salinity treatments showed effectively after second and third harvests of the oregano for the many examined properties. Fresh and dry weight values showed variability between 1.60–6.00 g/plant and 0.54–2.42 g/plant, respectively. Principal coordinate analysis indicated that most of the properties took place in the groups 1 (1st harvests of plant height and protein content, 2nd harvests of protein content and fresh and dry weight, 3rd harvest of fresh weight and total fresh and dry weight values) and 2 (branch number and essential oil contents, Na, and Zn). The heat-map analysis divided into two main clusters as A and B. A2, A4, and A5 treatments took place in the B group. Treatment of 10 ppm Se×10 ppm B showed better values compared to other treatments. Thus, this treatment may be beneficial for oregano cultivation under non-saline conditions. Full article

Consumer requirements for confectionery products have changed significantly over the past decade. These changes are evident in the growing demand for products that are high in protein but lower in energy content and, as a result, the market for these types of products is expanding. This study compared the chemical composition and functional properties of pork meat protein (MP) and blood plasma protein (BP) and evaluated their incorporation into cocoa cream formulations. Functional properties, such as water-holding capacity (WHC) and oil-holding capacity (OHC), were determined. Essential amino acid profiles were determined using HPLC analysis, and protein digestibility was evaluated both in the native form and after incorporation into the cocoa cream matrix via in vitro enzymatic digestion assays. Additionally, antioxidant activity of the enriched cocoa creams was assessed using the established ABTS assay. Results showed that BP contained a higher proportion of essential amino acids (26.44% of total amino acids), meeting the FAO/WHO recommendations, and exhibited superior digestibility compared to MP. Both proteins demonstrated high WHC and OHC values. The antioxidant potential of BP-enriched cocoa cream further supported its functional benefits. These findings indicate that blood plasma protein is a promising ingredient for enhancing the nutritional and functional quality of cocoa cream products. Full article

Background/Objectives: Basil essential oil exhibits a wide range of biological activities, including strong antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. Considering the health benefits of basil essential oil (BEO) and the favorable properties of alkyl polyglucoside emulsifiers, novel Montanov™-68-based O/W creams containing BEO were developed and characterized. Additionally, the influence of the emulsifier content on the cream’s properties was evaluated. Methods: The physicochemical properties were evaluated by organoleptic examination, physical stability test, and pH and electrical conductivity measurement. The mechanical properties were investigated by rheological, textural, and consistency analyses. In addition, a sensory evaluation protocol was applied. Results: The cream formulations containing 5% and 7% Montanov™ 68 demonstrated physical stability, with no evidence of phase separation during the observation period or following accelerated aging. The pH values remained within the acceptable range for topical use, and a gradual decrease in electrical conductivity over time was observed. The rheological analyses confirmed the non-Newtonian pseudoplastic behavior with thixotropic flow characteristics. The textural analyses demonstrated that the higher emulsifier content led to increased firmness, consistency, cohesiveness, and index of viscosity. The sensory analysis revealed differences between the alkyl polyglucoside (APG)-based cream formulations only in terms of the elasticity and stickiness. Conclusions: Although the rheological analyses suggested the better spreadability of the formulation with 5% emulsifier, this was not confirmed by the sensory analysis. However, the APG-based formulations performed significantly better than the synthetic surfactant-based formulation in terms of the absorption, stickiness, and greasiness (during and after application). These results are encouraging for the further evaluation of APG-based creams containing basil essential oil for topical application. Full article

Improving the quality of compounds in medicinal and aromatic plants is crucial due to their uses in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and food sectors. One way of influencing plant composition is through exposure to different light conditions. Therefore, a two-year field study (2023–2024) was conducted to investigate the impact of coloured shading nets on the physiology, essential oil (EO) content, and composition of three Mentha genotypes: Mentha × piperita ‘Multimentha’, Mentha × piperita ‘Fränkische Blaue’, and Mentha rotundifolia ‘Apfelminze’. In addition to an unshaded control, the Mentha plants were grown under red and blue shading nets. Plant height and vegetation indices were collected weekly. Biomass accumulation, EO content, and composition were determined for each harvest. Both red and blue shading were found to influence the physiological responses and EO compositions of the plants, with red shading promoting slightly higher p-menthone levels in ‘Fränkische Blaue’ and ‘Multimentha’, while blue shading slightly increased carvone levels in ‘Apfelminze’. While EO content varied across harvest seasons (spring, summer, and autumn), ‘Fränkische Blaue’ responded to red shading, demonstrating an increased EO content. The findings suggest that targeted use of coloured shading nets can modulate EO quality. However, genotype-specific responses highlight the necessity of further research to define shading applications for different species and genotypes. Full article

The Fermentative and Nutritional Effects of Limonene and a Cinnamaldehyde–Carvacrol Blend on Total Mixed Ration Silages

This study evaluated the effects of different doses of limonene essential oil (LEO) and a blend of cinnamaldehyde and carvacrol (BCC) on the fermentative quality and chemical–bromatological composition of total mixed ration (TMR) silages. Two independent trials were conducted, each focused on one additive, using a completely randomized design with four treatments (0, 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg of dry matter), replicated across two seasons (summer and autumn), with five replicates per treatment per season. The silages were assessed for their chemical composition, fermentation profile, aerobic stability (AS), and storage losses. In the LEO trial, the dry matter (DM) content increased significantly by 0.047% for each mg/kg added. Dry matter recovery (DMR) peaked at 97.9% at 473 mg/kg (p < 0.01), while lactic acid (LA) production reached 5.87% DM at 456 mg/kg. Ethanol concentrations decreased to 0.13% DM at 392 mg/kg (p = 0.04). The highest AS value (114 h) was observed at 203.7 mg/kg, but AS declined slightly at the highest LEO dose (600 mg/kg). No significant effects were observed for the pH, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), crude protein (CP), or non-fiber carbohydrates (NFCs). In the BCC trial, DMR reached 98.2% at 548 mg/kg (p < 0.001), and effluent losses decreased by approximately 20 kg/ton DM. LA production peaked at 6.41% DM at 412 mg/kg (p < 0.001), and AS reached 131 h at 359 mg/kg. BCC increased NDF (from 23.27% to 27.73%) and ADF (from 35.13% to 41.20%) linearly, while NFCs and the total digestible nutrients (TDN) decreased by 0.0007% and 0.039% per mg of BCC, respectively. In conclusion, both additives improved the fermentation efficiency by increasing LA and reducing losses. LEO was more effective for DM retention and ethanol reduction, while BCC improved DMR and AS, with distinct effects on fiber and energy fractions. Full article
