Coal serves as the primary energy source for China, with production anticipated to reach 4.76 billion tons in 2024. However, the mining process generates a significant amount of gangue, with approximately 800 million tons produced in 2023 alone. Currently, China faces substantial gangue stockpiles, characterized by a low comprehensive utilization rate that fails to meet the country’s ecological and environmental protection requirements. The environmental challenges posed by the treatment and disposal of gangue are becoming increasingly severe. This review employs bibliometric analysis and theoretical perspectives to examine the latest advancements in gangue utilization, specifically focusing on the application of computational chemistry to elucidate the structural features and interaction mechanisms of coal gangue, and to collate how these insights have been leveraged in the literature to inform its potential utilization routes. The aim is to promote the effective resource utilization of this material, and key topics discussed include evaluating the risks of spontaneous combustion associated with gangue, understanding the mechanisms governing heavy metal migration, and modifying coal byproducts to enhance both economic viability and environmental sustainability. The case studies presented in this article offer valuable insights into the gangue conversion process, contributing to the development of more efficient and eco-friendly methods. By proposing a theoretical framework, this review will support ongoing initiatives aimed at the sustainable management and utilization of coal gangue, emphasizing the critical need for continued research and development in this vital area. This review uniquely combines bibliometric analysis with computational chemistry to identify new trends and gaps in coal waste utilization, providing a roadmap for future research. Full article

The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, is one of the polyphagous pests of several crops and forestry, resistant to numerous conventional chemicals. Due to the negative side effects of harmful chemical pesticides, such as environmental pollution, and risks to human health, the introduction of effective and low-risk alternatives is essential. The promising pesticidal effects of essential oils (EOs) isolated from Artemisia annua have been documented in recent studies. In the present study, the acaricidal effects of an A. annua EO, along with its two dominant monoterpenoids, 1,8-cineole and camphor, were investigated against adults of T. urticae. Artemisia annua EO, 1,8-cineole, and camphor, with 24 h-LC50 values of 0.289, 0.533, and 0.64 µL/L air, respectively, had significant toxicity by fumigation against T. urticae adults. Along with lethality, A. annua EO and monoterpenoids had significant inhibitory effects on the activity of detoxifying enzymes, including α- and β-esterases, glutathione S-transferases, and cytochrome P-450 monooxygenase. According to the findings of the present study, A. annua EO and its two dominant monoterpenoids, 1,8-cineole and camphor, with significant toxicity and inhibitory effects on detoxifying enzymes, can be introduced as available, effective, and eco-friendly acaricides in the management of T. urticae. As the popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) continues to increase, the need for effective and efficient driveline lubricants and dielectric coolants has become crucial. Commercially used mineral oils or synthetic ester-based coolants, despite performing satisfactorily, are not environmentally friendly. The fatty esters of vegetable oils, after overcoming their shortcomings (like poor oxidative stability, higher viscosity, and pour point) through chemical modification, have recently been used as potential dielectric coolants in transformers. The benefits of natural esters, including a higher flash point, breakdown voltage, dielectric character, thermal conductivity, and most importantly, readily biodegradable nature, have made them a suitable and sustainable substitute for traditional coolants in electric transformers. Based on their excellent performance in transformers, research on their application as dielectric immersion coolants in modern EVs has been emerging in recent years. This review primarily highlights the beneficial aspects of natural esters performing dual functions—cooling as well as lubricating, which is necessary for “wet” e-motors in EVs—through a comparative study with the commercially used mineral and synthetic coolants. The adoption of natural fatty esters of vegetable oils as an immersion cooling fluid is a significant sustainable step for the battery thermal management system (BTMS) of modern EVs considering environmental safety protocols. Continued research and development are necessary to overcome the ongoing challenges and optimize esters for widespread use in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle market. Full article

The accumulation of end-of-life tires and the rapid increase in demolition activities pose significant environmental and waste-management challenges. The redevelopment of construction materials incorporating this waste is a potentially promising strategy for minimizing environmental impact while promoting the principles of a circular economy. This study investigates the performance of self-compacting concrete (SCC) incorporating up to 20% rubber aggregates (sand and gravel) and 40% recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) for non-structural applications. A series of tests was conducted to assess fresh and hardened properties, including flowability, compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, water absorption, and density. The results indicated that increasing RCA content reduced density and compressive strength, while tensile and flexural strengths were only moderately affected. Response surface methodology (RSM), utilizing a Box–Behnken design, was employed to optimize compressive, tensile, and flexural strength responses. Statistical analysis was used to identify the optimal mix proportions, which balance the mechanical performance and sustainability of SCC with recycled components. Mixtures incorporating moderate rubber content—specifically, 5–5.5% sand rubber and 0–6% coarse rubber—and 40% recycled-concrete aggregate (RCA) achieved the highest predicted performance, with compressive strength ranging from 20.00 to 28.26 MPa, tensile strength from 2.16 to 2.85 MPa, and flexural strength reaching 5.81 MPa, making them suitable for sidewalks and walkways. Conversely, mixtures containing higher rubber proportions (5.5–20% sand rubber and 20% coarse rubber) combined with the same RCA level (40%) showed the lowest mechanical performance, with compressive strength between 5.2 and 10.08 MPa, tensile strength of 1.05–1.41 MPa, and flexural strength from 2.18 to 3.54 MPa. These findings underscore the broad performance range achievable through targeted optimization. They confirm the viability of recycled materials for producing environmentally friendly SCC in non-structural applications. Full article

This paper presents a comprehensive review of the environmentally friendly management and reutilization of electronic waste (e-waste) plastics in flexible pavement construction. The discussion begins with an overview of e-waste management challenges and outlines key recycling approaches for converting plastic waste into asphalt-compatible materials. This review then discusses the types of e-waste plastics used for asphalt modification, their incorporation methods, and compatibility challenges. Physical and chemical treatment techniques, including the use of free radical initiators, are then explored for improving dispersion and performance. Additionally, in situations where advanced pretreatment methods are not applicable due to cost, safety, or technical constraints, the application of alternative approaches, such as the use of low-cost complementary additives, is discussed as a practical solution to enhance compatibility and performance. Finally, the influence of e-waste plastics on the conventional and rheological properties of asphalt binders, as well as the performance of asphalt mixtures, is also evaluated. Findings indicate that e-waste plastics, when combined with appropriate pretreatment methods and complementary additives, can enhance workability, cold-weather cracking resistance, high-temperature anti-rutting performance, and resistance against moisture-induced damage while also offering environmental and economic benefits. This review highlights the potential of e-waste plastics as sustainable asphalt modifiers and provides insights across the full utilization pathway, from recovery to in-field performance. Sprouted grains are gaining attention as a natural and sustainable source of bioactive compounds with potential benefits in managing insulin resistance (IR), a hallmark of obesity-related metabolic disorders. This review aims to synthesize current findings on the biochemical changes induced during grain germination and their relevance to metabolic health. We examined recent in vitro, animal, and human studies focusing on how germination enhances the nutritional and functional properties of grains, particularly through the synthesis of compounds such as γ-aminobutyric acid, polyphenols, flavonoids, and antioxidants, while reducing anti-nutritional factors. These bioactive compounds have been shown to modulate metabolic and inflammatory pathways by inhibiting carbohydrate-digesting enzymes, suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines, improving redox balance, and influencing gut microbiota composition. Collectively, these effects contribute to improved insulin sensitivity and glycemic control. The findings suggest that sprouted grains serve not only as functional food ingredients but also as accessible dietary tools for preventing or alleviating IR. Their role in delivering multiple bioactive molecules through a simple, environmentally friendly process highlights their promise in developing future nutrition-based strategies for metabolic disease prevention. Urban areas are facing increasing traffic congestion, pollution, and infrastructure strain. Traditional urban transportation systems are often fragmented. They require users to plan, pay, and travel across multiple disconnected services. Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) integrates these services into a single digital platform, simplifying access and improving the user experience. This review critically examines the role of MaaS in fostering sustainable mobility ecosystems. MaaS aims to enhance user-friendliness, service variety, and sustainability by adopting a customer-centric approach to transportation. The findings reveal that successful MaaS systems consistently align with multimodal transport infrastructure, equitable access policies, and strong public-private partnerships. MaaS enhances the management of routes and traffic, effectively mitigating delays and congestion while concurrently reducing energy consumption and fuel usage. In this study, the authors examine MaaS as a new mobility paradigm for a sustainable transportation system in smart cities, observing the challenges and opportunities associated with its implementation. To assess the environmental impact, a sustainability index is calculated based on the use of different modes of transportation. Significant findings indicate that MaaS systems are proliferating in both quantity and complexity, increasingly integrating capabilities such as real-time multimodal planning, dynamic pricing, and personalized user profiles. This study investigates the improvement effect and micro-mechanism of guar gum and palm fibers, two eco-friendly materials, on expansive soil. The study uses disintegration tests, unconfined compressive strength tests, triaxial compression tests, and SEM analysis to evaluate the enhancement of mechanical properties. The results show that the guar gum–palm fiber composite significantly improves the compressive and shear strength of expansive soil. The optimal ratio is 2% guar gum, 0.4% palm fiber, and 6 mm palm fiber length. Increasing fiber length initially boosts and then reduces unconfined compressive strength. Guar gum increases unconfined compressive strength by 187.18%, further improved by 20.9% with palm fibers. When fiber length is fixed, increasing palm fiber content increases and then stabilizes peak stress and shear strength (cohesion and internal friction angle), improving by 27.30%, 52.1%, and 12.4%, respectively, compared to soil improved with only guar gum. Micro-analysis reveals that guar gum enhances bonding between soil particles via a gel matrix, improving water stability and mechanical properties, while palm fibers reinforce the soil and inhibit crack propagation. The synergistic effect significantly enhances composite-improved soil performance, offering economic and environmental benefits, and provides insights for expansive soil engineering management. Moringa oleifera (MO), a nutritionally and pharmacologically potent species, is emerging as a sustainable candidate for applications across bioenergy, agriculture, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and biomedicine. This review explores recent advances in MO-based biotechnologies, highlighting novel extraction methods, green nanotechnology, and clinical trial findings. Although MO’s resilience offers promise for climate-smart agriculture and public health, challenges remain in standardizing cultivation and verifying therapeutic claims. This work underscores MO’s translational potential and the need for integrative, interdisciplinary research. MO is used in advanced materials, like electrospun fibers and biopolymers, showing filtration, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties—important for the biomedical industry and environmental remediation. In textiles, it serves as an eco-friendly alternative for wastewater treatment and yarn sizing. Biotechnological advancements, such as genome sequencing and in vitro culture, enhance traits and metabolite production. MO supports green biotechnology through sustainable agriculture, nanomaterials, and biocomposites. MO shows potential for disease management, immune support, metabolic health, and dental care, but requires further clinical trials for validation. Its resilience is suitable for land restoration and food security in arid areas. AI and deep learning enhance Moringa breeding, allowing for faster, cost-effective development of improved varieties. MO’s diverse applications establish it as a key element for sustainable development in arid regions. Full article

The global food industry is facing growing pressure to enhance food safety, extend shelf life, minimize waste, and adopt environmentally sustainable packaging solution. Nanotechnology offers innovative ways to meet these demands by enabling the creation of smart and sustainable food packaging systems. Due to their unique properties, nanomaterials can significantly enhance the functional performance of packaging by boosting mechanical strength, barrier efficiency, antimicrobial activity, and responsiveness to environmental stimuli. This review provides a comprehensive overview of nanomaterials used as smart and sustainable food packaging, focusing on their role in active and intelligent packaging systems. By integrating nanomaterials like metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, carbon-based nanostructures, and nano-biopolymers, packaging can now perform real-time sensing, spoilage detection, and traceability. These systems improve food quality management and supply chain transparency while supporting global sustainability goals. The review also discusses potential risks related to nanomaterials’ migration, environmental impact, and consumer safety, as well as the current regulatory landscape and limitations in industrial scalability. Emphasis is placed on the importance of standardized safety assessments and eco-friendly design to support responsible innovation. Overall, nano-enabled smart packaging represents a promising strategy for advancing food safety and sustainability. Future developments will require collaboration across disciplines and robust regulatory frameworks to ensure the safe and practical application of nanotechnology in food systems. Full article

Wax deposition, driven by the crystallization of long-chain n-alkanes, poses severe challenges across industries such as petroleum, oil and natural gas, food processing, and chemical manufacturing. This phenomenon compromises flow efficiency, increases energy demands, and necessitates costly maintenance interventions. Wax inhibitors, designed to mitigate these issues, operate by altering wax crystallization, aggregation, and adhesion over the pipelines. Classic wax inhibitors, comprising synthetic polymers and natural compounds, have been widely utilized due to their established efficiency and scalability. However, synthetic inhibitors face environmental concerns, while natural inhibitors exhibit reduced performance under extreme conditions. The advent of nano-based wax inhibitors has revolutionized wax management strategies. These advanced materials, including nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, and nanocomposites, leverage their high surface area and tunable interfacial properties to enhance efficiency, particularly in harsh environments. While offering superior performance, nano-based inhibitors are constrained by high production costs, scalability challenges, and potential environmental risks. In parallel, the development of “green” wax inhibitors derived from renewable resources such as vegetable oils addresses sustainability demands. These eco-friendly formulations introduce functionalities that reinforce inhibitory interactions with wax crystals, enabling effective deposition control while reducing reliance on synthetic components. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the mechanisms, applications, and comparative performance of classic and nano-based wax inhibitors. It highlights the growing integration of sustainable and hybrid approaches that combine the reliability of classic inhibitors with the advanced capabilities of nano-based systems. Future directions emphasize the need for cost-effective, eco-friendly solutions through innovations in material science, computational modeling, and biotechnology. Full article

Agriculture and its related industries produce annually a vast amount of byproducts and waste which comprise a large proportion of global waste. Only a small percentage is managed with environmentally acceptable procedures, while a large proportion is either incinerated or discarded into nearby open fields, causing serious environmental burdens. Since these byproducts exhibit a rich nutritional and phytochemical content, they may be considered as raw materials for various industrial applications, initiating the need for the development of sustainable and eco-friendly methods for their valorization. Among the various methods considered, Solid-State Fermentation (SSF) constitutes an intriguing eco-friendly bioprocess, being suitable for water-insoluble mixtures and providing products with improved stability and depleted catabolic suppression. Thus, there are several literature studies highlighting the aspects and efficacy of SSF for improving the nutritional and phytochemical contents of diverse agro-industrial waste. The review herein aspires to summarize these literature results with a special focus on the enhancement of their antioxidant potency. Interfacial solar evaporation has emerged as a promising strategy for freshwater production, where 3D evaporators offer distinct advantages in heat management and salt rejection. Freeze–thaw cycling is a widely adopted fabrication method for 3D hydrogel evaporators, yet the impact of preparation conditions (e.g., freezing temperature) on their evaporation performance remains poorly understood, hindering rational optimization of fabrication protocols. Herein, we report the fabrication of chitosan-based hydrogel evaporators via freeze–thaw cycles at different freezing temperatures (−20 °C, −40 °C, and −80 °C), leveraging its low cost and environmental friendliness. Characterizations of crosslinking density and microstructure reveal a direct correlation between freezing temperature and network porosity, which significantly influences evaporation rate, photothermal conversion efficiency, and anti-salt performance. It is noteworthy that the chitosan hydrogel prepared at −80 °C demonstrates an excellent evaporation rate in high-salinity environments and exhibits superior salt resistance during continuous evaporation testing. Long-term cyclic experiments indicate that there was an average evaporation rate of 3.76 kg m−2 h−1 over 10 cycles, with only a 2.5% decrease observed in the 10th cycle. This work not only elucidates the structure–property relationship of freeze–thaw fabricated hydrogels but also provides a strategic guideline for tailoring evaporator architectures to different salinity conditions, bridging the gap between material design and practical seawater desalination. Wheat powdery mildew is a major fungal disease threatening global wheat production. To develop an effective and environmentally friendly control strategy, this study systematically evaluated the disease-suppressive efficacy of strong oxidative free radicals across a series of treatment parameters, including radical concentrations (3.0–8.0 mg/L), spraying durations (20–60 s), solution pH levels (5–8), spraying heights (0–20 cm), and treatment timings corresponding to different infection stages (0–120 h post-inoculation). Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize these variables with the objective of maximizing disease control efficacy. The results showed that control efficacy increased with radical concentration up to 5.0 mg/L, beyond which a saturation effect was observed. The most effective conditions included a spraying duration of 50 s and a height of 6.5 cm. Maximum suppression was achieved when the treatment was applied within 0–12 h post-infection. Moreover, adjusting the solution pH to a range of 5–7 further enhanced the efficacy. The RSM-based predictive model demonstrated high accuracy (R2 = 0.9942), and the optimized parameters—6.65 mg/L radical concentration, 50.84 s spraying duration, and treatment at 15.67 h post-infection—yielded a predicted control efficacy of 97.64%, with a validation error below 0.5%. This study provides a quantitative basis for the precise and sustainable deployment of free radical-based treatments in wheat disease management. Full article

Thai fermented soybeans (TFSs) contain phytochemicals with anti-diabetic benefits. In this study, an initial non-optimized TFS extract (TFSE) was prepared using a conventional triplicate 80% ethanol extraction method and evaluated for its biological activity. TFSE effectively reversed TNF-α-induced insulin resistance in 3T3-L1 adipocytes by enhancing insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, indicating anti-diabetic potential. TFSE also upregulated the phosphorylation of AKT (a key insulin signaling mediator) and the expression of adipogenic proteins (PPARγ, CEBPα) in TNF-α-exposed 3T3-L1, suggesting the mitigation of adipocyte dysfunction; however, the results did not reach statistical significance. The conventional extraction process was labor-intensive and time-consuming, and to enhance extraction efficiency and bioactivity, the process was subsequently optimized using environmentally friendly microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) in combination with the Box–Behnken design (BBD) and response surface methodology (RSM). The optimized extract (O-TFSE) was obtained over a significantly shorter extraction time and exhibited higher levels of total flavonoids and antioxidant activity in comparison to TFSE, while showing reduced levels of isoflavones (daidzein, genistein, and glycitein) in relation to TFSE. Interestingly, O-TFSE retained similar efficacy in reversing TNF-α-induced insulin resistance and demonstrated significantly stronger α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibitory activities, indicating its enhanced potential for diabetes management. These results support the use of MAE as an efficient method for extracting functional compounds from TFS for functional foods targeting insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Full article
