The Impact of Mental Fatigue on the Accuracy of Penalty Kicks in College Soccer Players

Purpose: To investigate the impact of mental fatigue on the shooting accuracy and movement timing in the instep kick of Asian high-level soccer players. Methods: Eight male collegiate soccer players (age 22.00 ± 0.93 years) were tested before and after mental fatigue induction. Mental fatigue was induced via a 30 min Stroop task. The effectiveness of fatigue induction was assessed using heart rate variability (HRV), a visual analog scale (VAS), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ). Shooting performance was evaluated before and after mental fatigue using the Loughborough Soccer Shooting Test (LSST) and by evaluating timing by means of high-speed imaging. Results: Following mental fatigue induction, HRV decreased. Subjects’ motivation (VAS) to exercise significantly decreased (p < 0.001), while VAS mental fatigue level (p < 0.001) and mental effort level (p < 0.002) significantly increased. Significant differences were observed after completing the Stroop task for ABQ Emotional/Physical Exhaustion (p < 0.007), Reduced Sense of Accomplishment (p < 0.007), Sport Devaluation (p < 0.006), and overall burnout level (p < 0.002). LSST showed that the subjects’ left foot test scores (−4.13, p < 0.013), right foot test scores (−3, p < 0.001), and total scores (−3.16, p < 0.001) significantly decreased. Although movement times increased slightly after fatigue, they did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: Mental fatigue significantly impairs the shooting accuracy of collegiate soccer players, as evidenced by decreased LSST scores. However, it has no significant effect on event duration during shooting execution. Mental fatigue affected decision-making but not shooting movement timing. More cognitively challenging tasks are more affected by mental fatigue. Full article

Despite extensive research on early childhood education (ECE) quality at the preschool level, toddler settings remain comparatively understudied, particularly in Chile and Latin America. Research suggests that quality ECE strengthens child development, while low-quality services can be harmful. ECE quality comprises structural features like ratios and classroom resources, and process features related to interactions within classrooms. This study examines how process and structural quality indicators are related in nurseries serving disadvantaged backgrounds. Data were collected from 51 Chilean urban classrooms serving children aged 12–24 months. Classrooms were evaluated using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) for toddlers, questionnaires, and checklists. Latent Profile Analysis identified process quality patterns, while multinomial regression examined associations with structural quality indicators. The results revealed low-to-moderate process quality across classrooms (M = 4.78 for Emotional and Behavioral Support; M = 2.35 for Engaged Support for Learning), with three distinct quality clusters emerging. Marginally significant differences were found between high- and low-performing clusters regarding classroom space (p = 0.06), number of toys (p = 0.08), and staff educational credentials (p = 0.01–0.07). No significant differences emerged for group sizes or adult-to-child ratios, which are heavily regulated in Chile. These findings underscore the need to strengthen quality assurance mechanisms ensuring all children access quality ECE. Full article

Background/Objectives: Impairment in self-awareness (ISA) is one of the common consequences of an acquired brain injury (ABI) and is associated with anosodiaphoria. Collectively, these co-occurring neuropsychological disorders pose significant obstacles in the neurorehabilitation of moderate-to-severe ABI patients. Individuals who recover from ISA may present with anxiety and/or depression as adaptive reactions to the ABI, along with related functional disabilities. The present study investigated whether the level of metacognitive self-awareness (SA) is associated with the presence of anxiety and depression, apathy, or anosodiaphoria in patients with moderate-to-severe ABI. It aimed also at investigating the possible relationship between the severity of disability and both psycho-emotional diseases and the presence of PTSD symptoms in patients with high metacognitive SA. Methods: Sixty patients with moderate-to-severe ABI and different levels of metacognitive SA completed a series of questionnaires, which assessed their self-reported metacognitive SA, anosodiaphoria, anxiety and depression, apathy, and PTSD symptoms. Results: Low-metacognitive-SA patients showed lower levels of anxiety and depression and higher anosodiaphoria than high-metacognitive-SA patients. Patients with high metacognitive SA and high levels of disability showed significant higher states of anxiety and PTSD symptoms than patients with high metacognitive SA and low levels of disability. Conclusions: The neurorehabilitation of individuals with moderate to severe ABI should address, in particular, the complex interaction between ISA and anxiety and depression in patients during the rehabilitation process. Functional and Emotional Impact of Dry Eye and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction in Keratoconus

Background/Objectives: Dry eye (DE) can cause persistent eye rubbing, contributing to keratoconus (KC) development and progression. Both keratoconus (KC) and dry eye (DE) significantly impact patients’ functional and emotional well-being, with KC patients exhibiting a higher prevalence of DE symptoms and signs. This study examined whether functional (KEPAQ-F) and emotional (KEPAQ-E) quality of life, assessed by the Keratoconus End-Points Assessment Questionnaire, differ when influenced by symptoms and clinical signs of general DE versus meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) in KC patients. Methods: Volunteers with KC (ages 18–70) underwent DE and MGD assessments, completing OSDI, MGD (MGDQ), and KEPAQ questionnaires. Clinical measures included NITBUT, Schirmer, and meibography. Pearson correlations and path analysis assessed relationships between DE and MGD symptoms and KEPAQ-F/E. Results: Forty-five KC participants (mean age: 45 ± 13, range: 20–69 years, 25 males) were enrolled; 22 (49%) had DE, and 15 (33%) had MGD. Significant correlations were observed between KEPAQ-E (2.9 ± 3.0 Logit) and KEPAQ-F (1.7 ± 3.0 Logit) scores with OSDI (26.5 ± 26.7) and MGDQ (3.3 ± 2.2) scores, and all Belin outcome measures A-D for all participants. In participants with diagnosed dry eye, KEPAQ E and F were also significantly correlated with loss of meibomian glands in the lower eyelids (R = −0.44, p = 0.04). Path analysis showed both DE and MGD were negatively correlated with lower KEPAQ-E and KEPAQ-F scores, with DE symptoms were more influential (p < 0.05). The model explained 42% of the KEPAQ-E variance and 41% of the KEPAQ-F variance. Conclusions: Emotional and functional quality of life in KC is significantly and negatively related to DE and MGD symptoms, with DE symptoms exhibiting a greater impact. Furthermore, greater loss of meibomian glands in the lower eyelids is significantly associated with reduced emotional and functional KEPAQ scores in DE patients. These results underscore the critical importance of evaluating DE in KC to improve patient-reported outcomes. Full article

Despite the extensive evidence supporting the effectiveness of cognitive stimulation, differences in results may be due to the influence of cognitive and non-cognitive aspects in people with dementia. The aim of this systematic review is to identify the most reliable variables in forecasting the effectiveness of cognitive stimulation in people with mild to moderate dementia. According to PRISMA guidelines, the research was conducted using five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Web of Science, APA PsycInfo), considering randomized controlled trials. A total of six studies were included. Different aspects moderating the gain resulting from cognitive intervention were collected and assessed in terms of demographic, cognitive, emotional, social, and quality of life parameters. People with dementia benefit more from cognitive intervention if they are female, if they have a low formal education level, a low baseline level of cognitive function, and lower depressive symptoms, and if caregivers actively participate in sessions. Quality of life, if low at baseline, also seems to improve following CST intervention. A deeper understanding of the cognitive and non-cognitive aspects ensuring improvement after cognitive stimulation may guide future research to develop more personalized interventions. Full article

Background: Fear of falling (FOF) is a significant concern among older adults, especially after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). FOF can limit daily activities, reduce quality of life, and hinder recovery. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, severity, and impacts of FOF in patients undergoing TKA and identify factors contributing to increased FOF. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from April 2024 to December 2024. This study included 52 participants aged 20 to 75 years who had undergone primary TKA. Data were collected at two time points: after TKA and at three months post-surgery. The Short Falls Efficacy Scale-International (SFES-I) was used to assess the severity of FOF, and the Short Form 36 (SF-36) was used to measure the quality of life. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, and logistic regression were used for analysis. Results: This study included 52 participants (mean age: 63.77 ± 6.65 years; 82.7% female). Post-TKA, all participants exhibited high FOF (mean SFES-I score: 56.75 ± 8.30). After three months, the mean SFES-I score decreased significantly to 49.04 ± 12.45 (t = 4.408, p < 0.05). Post-TKA, SF-36 showed significant improvements in the physical function, role of physical limitations, bodily pain, vitality, social function, role of emotional limitations, and mental health subdomains. Bilateral total knee arthroplasty, body mass index, and some SF-36 subcomponents—such as general health, vitality, and role of emotional limitations—were identified as factors leading to increased FOF. Conclusions: FOF remains prevalent and severe in TKA patients, even at three months post-surgery, affecting rehabilitation outcomes. Early identification and tailored interventions for FOF should be considered essential components of comprehensive TKA recovery programs. Full article

(1) Background: Rapid population aging in China intensifies physical and mental health challenges, including negative emotions and social barriers. Physical activity (PA) fosters resilience, adaptability, and successful aging through emotional and social benefits. This study examines the relationship between square-dancing exercise and psychological capital (PsyCap) in middle-aged and elderly individuals using cross-validation, subgroup analysis, and a cross-sequential design. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study with 5714 participants employed a serial mediation model. Online questionnaires assessed square-dancing exercise, cognitive reappraisal, prosocial behavior tendencies, PsyCap, and interpersonal relationships. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS 27.0 and Mplus 8.3, incorporating correlation analysis, structural equation modeling, and subgroup comparisons. (3) Results: (a) Cognitive reappraisal and prosocial behavior mediated the link between square-dancing and PsyCap through three pathways; (b) model stability was confirmed across two random subsamples; (c) cross-group differences emerged in age and interpersonal relationships. Compared with secondary data, this study further validated PsyCap’s stability over six months post-pandemic. (4) Conclusions: The study, based on China’s largest square-dancing sample, establishes a robust serial mediation model. The findings strengthen theoretical foundations for PA-based interventions promoting psychological resilience in aging populations, highlighting structured exercise’s role in mental and social well-being. The problem associated with the manifestation of burnout syndrome is the subject of ongoing interest. In recent years, occupational burnout has been actively studied among professionals in the helping professions (teachers, physicians, social workers, psychologists, prison officers, etc.). However, the phenomenon has been poorly studied among freelancers. Therefore, the aim of this study is to fill this gap by determining the level of burnout syndrome among Bulgarian freelancers and investigate the influence of some work environment factors on professional burnout in the sample. A survey of 1138 freelancers was carried out using the Burnout Self-Assessment Questionnaire developed by Maslach and a questionnaire developed in-house to explore the factors of the occupational environment and ask questions related to socio-demographic factors. Hypotheses are tested using correlation analysis and structural equation modelling. The study reveals high levels of emotional exhaustion (40.91%, n = 484). High values on the scale of depersonalization were reported for 26,3% of the respondents (n = 311). Only 3.1% of the respondents (n = 37) had high values on the reduced personal accomplishment scale. The high levels of burnout among freelancers could be influenced by the specific characteristics of their work environment and the nature of their tasks. Full article

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains Europe’s leading cause of mortality, responsible for >45% of deaths. Beyond established risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, smoking, obesity), psychosocial elements—depression, anxiety, financial stress, personality traits, and trauma—significantly influence CVD development and progression. Behavioural Cardiology addresses this connection by systematically incorporating psychosocial factors into prevention and rehabilitation protocols. This review examines the HEARTBEAT model, developed by Greece’s first Behavioural Cardiology Unit, which aligns with current European guidelines. The model serves dual purposes: primary prevention (targeting at-risk individuals) and secondary prevention (treating established CVD patients). It is a personalised medicine approach that integrates psychosocial profiling with traditional risk assessment, utilising tailored evaluation tools, caregiver input, and multidisciplinary collaboration to address personality traits, emotional states, socioeconomic circumstances, and cultural contexts. The model emphasises three critical implementation aspects: (1) digital health integration, (2) cost-effectiveness analysis, and (3) healthcare system adaptability. Compared to international approaches, it highlights research gaps in psychosocial interventions and advocates for culturally sensitive adaptations, particularly in resource-limited settings. Special consideration is given to older populations requiring tailored care strategies. Ultimately, Behavioural Cardiology represents a transformative systems-based approach bridging psychology, lifestyle medicine, and cardiovascular treatment. This integration may prove pivotal for optimising chronic disease management through personalised interventions that address both biological and psychosocial determinants of cardiovascular health. Mental stress is a psychological or emotional strain that typically occurs because of threatening, challenging, and overwhelming conditions and affects human behavior. Various factors, such as professional, environmental, and personal pressures, often trigger it. In recent years, various deep learning (DL)-based schemes using electroencephalograms (EEGs) have been proposed. However, the effectiveness of DL-based schemes is challenging because of the intricate DL structure, class imbalance problems, poor feature representation, low-frequency resolution problems, and complexity of multi-channel signal processing. This paper presents a novel hybrid DL framework, BDDNet, which combines a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN), bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM), and deep belief network (DBN). BDDNet provides superior spectral–temporal feature depiction and better long-term dependency on the local and global features of EEGs. BDDNet accepts multiple EEG features (MEFs) that provide the spectral and time-domain features of EEGs. A novel improved crow search algorithm (ICSA) was presented for channel selection to minimize the computational complexity of multichannel stress detection. Further, the novel employee optimization algorithm (EOA) is utilized for the hyper-parameter optimization of hybrid BDDNet to enhance the training performance. The outcomes of the novel BDDNet were assessed using a public DEAP dataset. The BDDNet-ICSA offers improved recall of 97.6%, precision of 97.6%, F1-score of 97.6%, selectivity of 96.9%, negative predictive value NPV of 96.9%, and accuracy of 97.3% to traditional techniques. Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI)—encompassing anxiety, depression, and memory deficits—significantly diminishes the quality of life in patients with cancer, yet remains underrecognized in clinical practice. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic potential of tabernanthalog (TBG), a non-hallucinogenic analog of psychedelic compounds, as a novel intervention for CRCI using a Lewis lung carcinoma (3LL) mouse model. Behavioral assessments revealed heightened anxiety-like behavior and memory impairment following 3LL cell transplantation. Biochemical analysis revealed reduced tryptophan levels in both blood and hippocampal tissue, accompanied by the downregulation of serotonergic receptor genes and upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokine genes in the hippocampus of tumor-bearing mice. Additionally, microglial density and morphological activation were markedly elevated. TBG treatment reversed these behavioral deficits, improving both anxiety-related behavior and memory performance. These effects were associated with the normalization of microglial density and morphology, as well as the restoration of serotonergic receptor and cytokine gene expression. In vitro, TBG partially suppressed neuroinflammatory gene expression in BV-2 microglial cells exposed to conditioned medium from 3LL cells. Collectively, these findings suggest that TBG alleviates CRCI-like symptoms by modulating neuroinflammation and microglial activation. This study highlights TBG as a promising therapeutic candidate for improving cognitive and emotional functioning in patients with cancer. Full article

During the transition of culture-featured district planning from static conservation to innovation-driven models, existing research remains constrained by mechanistic paradigms, reducing districts to functional containers and neglecting human perceptual interactions and meaning-production mechanisms. This study explores and quantifies the generative mechanisms of spatial communicability and cultural dissemination efficacy within human-centered frameworks. Grounded in humanistic urbanism, we analyze Harbin Central Street as a case study integrating historical heritage with contemporary vitality, developing a tripartite communicability assessment framework comprising perceptual experience, infrastructure utility, and behavioral dynamics. Machine learning-based threshold analysis reveals that spatial encoding elements govern communicability through significant nonlinear mechanisms. The conclusion shows synergies between street view-quantified greenery visibility and pedestrian accessibility establish critical human-centered design thresholds. Spatial data analysis integrating physiologically sensed emotional experiences and topologically analyzed spatial morphology resolves metric fragmentation while examining spatial encoding’s impact on interaction efficacy. This research provides data-driven decision support for sustainable urban renewal and enhanced cultural dissemination, advancing heritage sustainability. Full article

Advances in neuroscience have improved the understanding of cognitive, emotional, and social processes involved in learning. Simultaneously, technologies such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and gamification are transforming educational practices. However, their integration into formal education remains limited and often misapplied. This study aims to evaluate the impact of technology-supported neuroeducational models on student learning and well-being. A systematic review was conducted using PubMed, the Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and LILACS, including open-access studies published between 2020 and 2025. Selection and methodological assessment followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Out of 386 identified articles, 22 met the inclusion criteria. Most studies showed that neuroeducational interventions incorporating interactive and adaptive technologies enhanced academic performance, intrinsic motivation, emotional self-regulation, and psychological well-being in various educational contexts. Technology-supported neuroeducational models are effective in fostering both cognitive and emotional development. The findings support integrating neuroscience and educational technology into teaching practices and teacher training, promoting personalized, inclusive, and evidence-based education. Full article

Background/Objectives: This study aimed to determine whether postpartum mothers exhibit a uniform trajectory of postpartum emotional status (PES) changes or if distinct subgroups with differing trajectories of PES exist. Additionally, it investigated whether intensified tactile stimulation of the infant through Shantala massage influences maternal PES. Method: A quasi-experimental design with a matched control group was employed. Eighty women following their first physiological delivery volunteered to participate. The intervention involved applying intensified tactile stimulation to the infant via Shantala massage over a 12-week postpartum period. Maternal PES, divided into negative and positive emotional domains, was assessed using four standardized questionnaires. Results: Two opposing trajectories of PES change were identified: adverse and favorable. Intensified tactile stimulation was associated with improvement in maternal emotional status along both trajectories. Conclusions: PES changes do not follow a uniform course across all women; notably, those with a favorable trajectory often begin with more severe symptoms. Overlooking this distinction in diagnosis, prevention, and treatment may result in suboptimal care. The factors influencing PES trajectories remain unidentified but may affect clinical intervention outcomes. The Shantala massage intervention appears to slow the progression of emotional disorders in women with adverse PES changes and accelerate recovery in those with favorable changes. Implementation of this approach in clinical settings is recommended. Full article

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, frequently observed in juvenile offenders. This systematic review explores the interplay between ADHD and juvenile delinquency, focusing on behavioural, psychological, and social dimensions. Following the PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature review was conducted using EBSCO Discovery Service, Science Direct, PubMed, and snowballing techniques. Studies meeting specific inclusion criteria, including juvenile offenders diagnosed with ADHD and comparisons to non-offender or non-ADHD control groups, were analysed. The methodological quality of studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute appraisal tools. A total of 21 studies were included, highlighting significant associations between ADHD and juvenile delinquency. ADHD symptoms, especially impulsivity and emotional dysregulation, were linked to an earlier onset of offending and higher rates of property crimes. Comorbidities such as conduct disorder, substance use disorder, and depression exacerbated these behaviours. Sociodemographic factors like low education levels and adverse family environments were also critical modifiers. Early intervention and tailored treatment approaches were emphasised to address these challenges. The findings underscore the need for early diagnosis, individualised treatment, and integrative rehabilitation programmes within the juvenile justice system to mitigate long-term risks and promote social inclusion.
