Grounding systems are critical for ensuring electrical safety, fault current dissipation, and electromagnetic compatibility in power installations across different voltage levels. This research presents a comparative study on the optimization of grounding configurations for 400 V, 10 kV, and 35 kV electrical installations, focusing on key performance parameters such as grounding resistance, step and touch voltages, and fault current dissipation efficiency. The study employs computational simulations using the finite element method (FEM) alongside empirical field measurements to evaluate the influence of soil resistivity, electrode materials, and grounding configurations, including rod electrodes, grids, deep-driven rods, and hybrid grounding systems. Results indicate that soil resistivity significantly affects grounding efficiency, with deep-driven rods providing superior performance in high-resistivity conditions, while grounding grids demonstrate enhanced fault current dissipation in substations. The integration of conductive backfill materials, such as bentonite and conductive concrete, further reduces grounding resistance and enhances system reliability. This study provides engineering insights into optimizing grounding systems based on installation voltage levels, cost considerations, and compliance with IEEE Std 80-2013 and IEC 60364-5-54. The findings contribute to the development of more resilient and cost-effective grounding strategies for electrical installations. Full article

The aim of the article is to determine the control range of a multiphase squirrel cage induction generator with more than three stator phases, operating in a wide range of driving speeds. The generator produces an output DC voltage using a multiphase converter operating as a PWM rectifier. The entire speed range is divided into intervals in which the sequence of stator phase voltages and, in effect, the number of pole pairs, is changed. In each interval, the output voltage is regulated by the frequency and amplitude of the stator voltages causing the highest possible power efficiency of the generator. The system can be scalar controlled or regulated using field orientation. Generator characteristics are calculated based on the set of steady-state equations derived from differential equations describing the multiphase induction machine. The calculation results are compared with simulations and with the steady-state measurement of the vector-controlled nine-phase generator. Recognizing the reliability of the obtained results, calculations are performed for a twelve-phase generator, obtaining satisfactory efficiency from 70% to 85% in the generator speed range from 0.2 to 1.0 of the assumed reference speed of 314 rad/s. The generator producing DC voltage can charge an electrical energy storage system or can be used directly to provide electrical power. This solution is not patented. Full article

Simulation and Analysis of Electric Thermal Coupling for Corrosion Damage of Metro Traction Motor Bearings

With the electrification of generator sets, electric locomotives, new energy vehicles, and other industries, AC motors subject bearings to an electric field environment, leading to galvanic corrosion due to the use of variable frequency power supply drives. The phenomenon of bearing discharge breakdown in subway traction motors is a critical issue in understanding the relationship between shaft current strength and the extent of bearing damage. This paper analyzes the mechanism of impulse discharge that leads to galvanic corrosion damage in bearings at a microscopic level and conducts electric thermal coupling simulations of the traction motor bearing discharge breakdown process. It examines the temperature rise associated with lubricant film discharge breakdown during the dynamic operation of the bearing and investigates how breakdown channel parameters and operational conditions affect the temperature rise in the micro-region of bearing lubrication. Ultimately, the results of the electric thermal coupling simulation are validated through experimental tests. This study revealed that in an electric field environment, the load-bearing area of the outer ring experiences significantly more severe corrosion damage than the inner ring, whereas non-bearing areas remain unaffected by electrolytic corrosion. When the inner ring reaches a speed of 4500_rpm, the maximum widths of electrolytic corrosion pits for the outer and inner rings are measured at 89 um and 51 um, respectively. Additionally, the highest recorded temperatures for the breakdown channels in the outer and inner rings are 932 °C and 802 °C, respectively. Furthermore, as the inner ring speed increases, both the width of the electrolytic corrosion pits and the temperature of the breakdown channels rise. Specifically, at inner ring speeds of 2500_rpm, 3500_rpm, and 4500_rpm, the widths of the electrolytic pits in the outer ring raceway load zone were measured at 34 um, 56 um, and 89 um, respectively. The highest temperatures of the lubrication film breakdown channels were recorded as 612 °C, 788 °C, and 932 °C, respectively. This study provides a theoretical basis and data support for the protective and maintenance practices of traction motor bearings. Full article

Cumulative mistuning effects in electric vehicle wireless charging systems, arising from component tolerances, coil misalignments, and aging-induced drifts, can significantly degrade system performance. To mitigate this issue, this work establishes an analysis model for mistuned series–series-compensated wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. Through equivalent simplification of mistuned parameters, we systematically examine the effects of compensation capacitances and coil inductances on input impedance, output power, and efficiency in SS-compensated topologies across wide load ranges and different coupling coefficients. Results reveal that transmitter-side parameter deviations exert more pronounced impacts on input impedance and power gain than receiver-side variations. Remarkably, under receiver-side inductance mistuning of −20%, a significant 32° shift in the input impedance angle was observed. Experimental validation on a 500 W prototype confirms ≤5% maximum deviation between calculated and measured values for efficiency, input impedance angle, and power gain. Full article

Background and Clinical Significance: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a frequent and limiting complication of oncological treatment, particularly in patients receiving oxaliplatin. Its onset can significantly affect the quality of life and compromise the continuity of the antineoplastic therapy. Due to the limited efficacy of available pharmacological therapies, percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS) has been proposed as a non-invasive alternative for symptom management. Case presentation: We report the case of a 75-year-old woman with colorectal adenocarcinoma who developed CIPN following oxaliplatin administration. She underwent a 12-week course of PENS targeting the median nerve, with weekly sessions conducted without interruption of chemotherapy and without adverse effects. The patient showed progressive improvement in neurosensory symptoms, as measured by the EORTC QLQ-CIPN20 questionnaire. Quantitative sensory testing revealed normalization of thermal and vibratory sensitivity and improved mechanical detection thresholds. The cumulative oxaliplatin dose was maintained throughout treatment. Conclusions: PENS may offer an effective and safe therapeutic option for managing CIPN, enabling symptom control without compromising oncological treatment. This case supports the need for controlled clinical trials to confirm efficacy and establish standardized protocols. Full article

A square patch metasurface is designed, simulated, fabricated, and experimentally tested to investigate polarization characteristics quantitatively. The metasurface consists of one layer unit cell in the form of a square patch with one via and a lumped resistor, which is used for harvesting RF (radio frequency) energy. FR4 dielectric is used as a substrate supported by a metal ground plane. Polarization-dependent properties with specific surface current patterns and voltage dip are obtained when simulating under normal incidence of a plane wave. This characteristic results from changes in surface current conditions when the polarization angle is varied. A voltage dip appears at a specific polarization angle when the surface current pattern is symmetrical. This condition occurs when the position of the lumped resistor from the center of the patch is perpendicular to the linearly polarized incident electric field. A couple of 10 × 10 arrays with different resistor positions are fabricated and tested. The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulated results. The proposed design demonstrates a symmetric unit cell structure with one via and a resistor that exhibits polarization-dependent behavior for linear polarization. An asymmetric patch design is explored through both simulation and measurement to mitigate polarization dependence by suppressing the dip behavior, albeit at the expense of reduced absorption efficiency. This study provides a complete polarization analysis for both symmetric and asymmetric patch metasurfaces with a single via and a single lumped resistor, and introduces a predictive relation between the position of the resistor relative to the center of the patch and the resulting voltage dip behavior. During the period from 2020 to 2024, 900 springs were mapped on the southern slopes of Medvednica Mountain Nature Park. Physicochemical parameters (temperature, pH, and electrical conductivity) were measured at 701 of these springs using a portable multimeter, and results were analyzed in relation to local lithology and human activities. This research provides the first results of this kind in this study area, aiming to expand the knowledge on local springs and to support the future protection and management of spring ecosystems. Springs on the Medvednica mountain showed substantial variation in measured parameters. The temperature ranged from 3.4 to 18.9 °C, reflecting local hydrological conditions, aquifer characteristics, and seasonal variability. Electrical conductivity (EC) ranged between 41 μS/cm and 2062 μS/cm, determined by both hydrogeological settings and anthropogenic impacts such as winter road salting. The pH values showed moderate variability, remaining mostly within neutral levels. These results emphasize the importance of continued monitoring and further research of Medvednica springs, in order to highlight their importance and to preserve their ecological and hydrological roles. This research focuses on designing polymer membranes as biocompatible materials using home-built electrospinning equipment, offering alternative solutions for tissue regeneration applications. This technological development supports cell growth on biomaterial substrates, including hepatocellular carcinoma (Hep-G2) cells. This work researches the compatibility of polymer membranes (fiber mats) made of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) for possible use in cellular engineering. A standard culture medium was employed to support the proliferation of Hep-G2 cells under controlled conditions (37 °C, 4.8% CO2, and 100% relative humidity). Subsequently, after the incubation period, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) assays were conducted in a physiological environment to characterize the electrical cellular response, providing insights into the biocompatibility of the material. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to evaluate cell adhesion, morphology, and growth on the PVDF polymer membranes. The results suggest that PVDF polymer membranes can be successfully produced through electrospinning technology, resulting in the formation of a dipole structure, including the possible presence of a polar β-phase, contributing to piezoelectric activity. EIS measurements, based on Rct and Cdl values, are indicators of ion charge transfer and strong electrical interactions at the membrane interface. These findings suggest a favorable environment for cell proliferation, thereby enhancing cellular interactions at the fiber interface within the electrolyte. SEM observations displayed a consistent distribution of fibers with a distinctive spherical agglomeration on the entire PVDF surface. Finally, integrating piezoelectric properties into cell culture systems provides new opportunities for investigating the influence of electrical interactions on cellular behavior through electrochemical techniques. Based on the experimental results, this electrospun polymer demonstrates great potential as a promising candidate for next-generation biomaterials, with a probable application in tissue regeneration. In order to improve the inversion accuracy of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and overcome the limitations of traditional linear methods, this paper proposes an improved shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA). First, an equilibrium grouping strategy is designed to balance the contribution weight of each subgroup to the global optimal solution, suppressing the local optimum traps caused by the dominance of high-quality groups. Second, an adaptive movement operator is constructed to dynamically regulate the step size of the search, enhancing the guiding effect of the optimal solution. In synthetic data tests of three typical electrical models, including a high-resistivity anomaly with 5% random noise, a normal fault, and a reverse fault, the improved algorithm shows an approximately 2.3 times higher accuracy in boundary identification of the anomaly body compared to the least squares (LS) method and standard SFLA. Additionally, the root mean square error is reduced by 57%. In the engineering validation at the Baota Mountain mining area in Jurong, the improved SFLA inversion clearly reveals the undulating bedrock morphology. At a measuring point 55 m along the profile, the bedrock depth is 14.05 m (ZK3 verification value 12.0 m, error 17%), and at 96 m, the depth is 6.9 m (ZK2 verification value 6.7 m, error 3.0%). The characteristic of deeper bedrock to the south and shallower to the north is highly consistent with the terrain and drilling data (RMSE = 1.053). This algorithm provides reliable technical support for precise detection of complex geological structures using ERT. Full article

This study evaluates the socio-economic impact of rural electrification through photovoltaic (PV) systems in Morocco. As part of the country’s broader energy transition strategy, decentralized renewable energy solutions like PV kits have been deployed to improve energy access in isolated rural areas. Using quasi-experimental econometric techniques, specifically propensity score matching (PSM) and estimation of the Average Treatment Effect on the Treated (ATT), the study measures changes in household income, expenditures, and economic activities resulting from PV electrification. The results indicate significant positive effects on household income, electricity spending, and productivity in agriculture and livestock. These findings highlight the critical role of decentralized renewable energy in advancing rural development and poverty reduction. Policy recommendations include expanding PV access with complementary support measures such as microfinance and technical training. Full article

A Safety-Based Approach for the Design of an Innovative Microvehicle

The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article

The energy generated from renewable sources has an intermittent nature since solar irradiation and wind speed vary continuously. Hence, their energy should be stored to be utilized throughout their shortage. There are various forms of energy storage systems while the most widespread technique is the battery storage system since its cost is low compared to other techniques. Therefore, batteries are employed in several applications like power systems, electric vehicles, and smart grids. Due to the merits of the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery, it is preferred over other kinds of batteries. However, the accuracy of the Li-ion battery model is essential for estimating the state of charge (SOC). Additionally, it is essential for consistent simulation and operation throughout various loading and charging conditions. Consequently, the determination of real battery model parameters is vital. An innovative application of the red-billed blue magpie optimizer (RBMO) for determining the model parameters and the SOC of the Li-ion battery is presented in this article. The Shepherd model parameters are determined using the suggested optimization algorithm. The RBMO-based modeling approach offers excellent execution in determining the parameters of the battery model. The suggested approach is compared to other programmed algorithms, namely dandelion optimizer, spider wasp optimizer, barnacles mating optimizer, and interior search algorithm. Moreover, the suggested RBMO is statistically evaluated using Kruskal–Wallis, ANOVA tables, Friedman rank, and Wilcoxon rank tests. Additionally, the Li-ion battery model estimated via the RBMO is validated under variable loading conditions. The fetched results revealed that the suggested approach achieved the least errors between the measured and estimated voltages compared to other approaches in two studied cases with values of 1.4951 × 10−4 and 2.66176 × 10−4. Background and Objective: Temperature management is key for reliable operation of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). The lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN) is fast and interpretable but struggles with nonlinear behavior under high power density. We propose OLTEM, a physics-informed deep model that combines LPTN with a thermal neural network (TNN) to improve prediction accuracy while keeping physical meaning. Methods: OLTEM embeds LPTN into a recurrent state-space formulation and learns three parameter sets: thermal conductance, inverse thermal capacitance, and power loss. Two additions are introduced: (i) a state-conditioned squeeze-and-excitation (SC-SE) attention that adapts feature weights using the current temperature state, and (ii) an enhanced power-loss sub-network that uses a deep MLP with SC-SE and non-negativity constraints. The model is trained and evaluated on the public Electric Motor Temperature dataset (Paderborn University/Kaggle). Performance is measured by mean squared error (MSE) and maximum absolute error across permanent-magnet, stator-yoke, stator-tooth, and stator-winding temperatures. Results: OLTEM tracks fast thermal transients and yields lower MSE than both the baseline TNN and a CNN–RNN model for all four components. On a held-out generalization set, MSE remains below 4.0 °C2 and the maximum absolute error is about 4.3–8.2 °C. Ablation shows that removing either SC-SE or the enhanced power-loss module degrades accuracy, confirming their complementary roles. Conclusions: By combining physics with learned attention and loss modeling, OLTEM improves PMSM temperature prediction while preserving interpretability. This approach can support motor thermal design and control; future work will study transfer to other machines and further reduce short-term errors during abrupt operating changes. Full article

This paper presents a data-driven energy management scheme for fuel cell and battery electric vehicles, formulated as a constrained optimal control problem. The proposed method employs a co-state network trained using real-time measurements to estimate the control law without requiring prior knowledge of the system model or a complete dataset across the full operating domain. In contrast to conventional reinforcement learning approaches, this method avoids the issue of high dimensionality and does not depend on extensive offline training. Robustness is demonstrated by treating uncertain and time-varying elements, including power consumption from air conditioning systems, variations in road slope, and passenger-related demands, as unknown disturbances. The desired state of charge is defined as a reference trajectory, and the control input is computed while ensuring compliance with all operational constraints. Validation results based on a combined driving profile confirm the effectiveness of the proposed controller in maintaining the battery charge, reducing fluctuations in fuel cell power output, and ensuring reliable performance under practical conditions. Comparative evaluations are conducted against two benchmark controllers: one designed to maintain a constant state of charge and another based on a soft actor–critic learning algorithm. Full article

Spin transport behaviors in heavy metal/ferromagnetic insulator (HM/FI) bilayers have attracted considerable attention due to various novel phenomena and applications in spintronic devices. Herein, we investigate the planar Hall effect (PHE) in Pt/Tm3Fe5O12 (Pt/TmIG) heterostructures at low temperatures; moment switching in the ferrimagnetic insulator TmIG is detected by using electrical measurements. Double switching hysteresis PHE curves are found in Pt/TmIG bilayers, closely related to the magnetic moment of Tm3+ ions, which makes a key contribution to the total magnetic moment of TmIG film at low temperature. More importantly, a magnetoresistance (MR) curve with double switching is found, which has not been reported in this simple HM/FI bilayer, and the sign of this MR effect is sensitive to the angle between the magnetic field and current directions. Our findings of these effects in this HM/rare earth iron garnet (HM/REIG) bilayer provide insights into tuning the spin transport properties of HM/REIG by changing the rare earth. Full article
