Liquid Crystal Elastomers combine the elasticity of polymer networks with the anisotropic ordering of liquid crystals, thus enabling reversible shape modifications and stimulus responsive actuation. Unfortunately, manual LCE fabrication remains limited by operator-dependent variability, which can lead to inconsistent film thickness and manufacturing times inadequate for a mass production. This work presents a low-cost, automated manufacturing framework that redesigns the mechanical assembly steps of the traditional one-step LCE fabrication process. The design includes rubbing, slide alignment, spacer placement, and infiltration cell assembly to ensure consistent film quality and scalability. A customized Cartesian robot, built by adapting a modified X–Y core 3D printer, integrates specially designed manipulator systems, redesigned magnetic slide holders, automated rubbing tools, and supporting fixtures to assemble infiltration devices in an automated way. Validation tests demonstrate reproducible infiltration, improved mesogen alignment confirmed via polarized optical microscopy, and high geometric repeatability, although glass-slide thickness variability remains a significant contributor to deviations in final film thickness. By enabling parallelizable low-cost production, the designed hardware demonstrates its effectiveness in devising the scalable manufacturing of LCE films suited for advanced therapeutic and engineering applications. Candida albicans, a commensal and opportunistic fungal pathogen, is a major clinical concern due to its ability to cause infections ranging from mild mucosal conditions to life-threatening systemic diseases, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Its capacity to form biofilms on medical devices further complicates treatment by enhancing antifungal resistance and immune evasion. In the search for novel therapeutic strategies, the lysine-enriched amphibian-derived temporin B analog, TB_KKG6K, has emerged as a promising antifungal agent. This study demonstrates that TB_KKG6K exhibits potent fungicidal activity against planktonic C. albicans cells, with a low potential to induce adaptation or resistance. TB_KKG6K has no adverse impact on the anti-Candida efficacy of standard antifungal drugs when applied in combination, interacting additively with amphotericin B and caspofungin in a fungicidal mode of action. Additionally, TB_KKG6K effectively reduces biofilm maturation on silicone elastomers, a material commonly used in medical devices, further highlighting its therapeutic potential. These data together with our previous documentation of minimal cytotoxicity and irritation potential in human cells makes TB_KKG6K a strong candidate for combating both planktonic and biofilm-associated C. albicans infections. These findings underscore the dual efficacy of TB_KKG6K and its potential to address the challenges posed by C. albicans in clinical settings. Full article

Flexible strain sensors capable of conformal integration with living organisms are essential for advanced wearable electronics, human–machine interaction, and plant health. However, many existing sensors require complex fabrication or rely on non-breathable elastomer substrates that interfere with the physiological microenvironment of skin or plant tissues. Here, we present a low-cost, breathable, and highly stretchable strain sensor constructed from biomedical materials, in which a double-layer medical elastic bandage serves as the porous substrate and an intermediate conductive medical elastic tape impregnated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) ink acts as the sensing layer. Owing to the hierarchical textile porosity and the deformable CNTs percolation network, the sensor achieves a wide strain range of 100%, a gauge factor of up to 2.72, and excellent nonlinear second-order fitting (R2 = 0.997). The bandage substrate provides superior air permeability, allowing long-term attachment without obstructing moisture and gas exchange, which is particularly important for maintaining skin comfort and preventing disturbances to plant epidermal physiology. Demonstrations in human joint-motion monitoring and real-time plant growth detection highlight the device’s versatility and biological compatibility. This work offers a simple, low-cost yet effective alternative to sophisticated strain sensors designed for human monitoring and plant growth monitoring, providing a scalable route toward multifunctional wearable sensing platforms. Additive manufacturing has significantly advanced patient-specific medical devices, particularly for hard tissue repair, yet applications in soft tissue remain limited. Existing approaches for 3D-printed soft tissue devices employ mainly biogels and bioinks for regenerative purposes, while synthetic grafts for tendons and ligaments remain non-customizable in shape and mechanics. This study investigates the mechanical performance of 3D-printed thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomers as a function of printing parameters, informing customizable connective tissue graft designs. Type C dogbone specimens (n = 180) of three replicates each of parameter combinations from material shore hardness, presence of anchoring within the lattice, infill patterns, and infill density were printed and tested following modified ASTM D412 standards for vulcanized rubber and elastomers. The measured mechanical properties are elastic modulus, tensile yield stress, yield strain, ultimate tensile strength, and ultimate strain. Results show that shore hardness and infill density are the strongest predictors of mechanical properties, with positive but modest effects from anchor presence. Infill pattern is only significant through interactions, and its effects depend on other parameters. While all groups underperformed compared to manufacturer-reported TPU strengths and were well below in vitro tendon failure loads, findings highlight material selection and density optimization as critical early considerations for future patient-specific elastomeric graft design. Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), as a class of smart materials, have attracted significant attention across soft robotics, biomedical engineering, and intelligent devices because of their unique capabilities to undergo large, reversible, and anisotropic deformations under external stimuli. Over the years, fabrication methods have advanced from conventional molding and thin-film processing to additive manufacturing, with 4D printing emerging as a transformative approach by enabling time-dependent, programmable shape transformations. Among the available methods, direct ink writing (DIW) and vat photopolymerization are most widely adopted, with ink chemistry, rheology, curing, and printing parameters directly governing mesogen alignment and actuation performance. Recent advances in LCE actuators have demonstrated diverse functionalities in soft robotics, including bending, crawling, gripping, and sequential actuation, while biomedical applications span adaptive tissue scaffolds, wearable sensors, and patient-specific implants. This review discusses the conceptual distinction between 3D and 4D printing, compares different additive manufacturing techniques for LCE, and highlights emerging applications in the field of soft robotics and biomedical technologies. Despite rapid progress in LCE, challenges remain in biocompatibility, long-term durability and manufacturing scalability. Overall, innovations in 4D printing of LCEs underscores both the promise and the challenges of these materials, pointing toward their transformative role in enabling next-generation soft robotic and biomedical technologies. Soft biological tissues display highly nonlinear and anisotropic mechanical behavior, which is critical to their physiological function. Replicating these mechanical properties using engineered materials and additive manufacturing represents a significant challenge in biomedical engineering, particularly for surgical simulation, device development, and preclinical testing. The left atrial appendage (LAA) was selected since it plays a central role in thrombus formation during atrial fibrillation, significantly contributing to cardioembolic stroke. This study proposes a framework for reproducing the nonlinear stress–strain behavior of soft tissue using 3D-printed models. The methodology integrates experimental material selection with optimization of key printing parameters to ensure structural reliability and functional mechanical performance. Two polymers—polyurethane (TPU) and a thermoplastic with elastomer-type behavior (TPE)—were selected for their tunable hardness and elasticity. A parametric study was conducted to investigate the effects of Shore A hardness (60A to 100A), infill density (0% to 100%), and external shell number (zero to two) on the tensile performance of printed models. Mechanical testing was performed to extract stress–strain curves and evaluate the mechanical response. The practical implications of this study are significant, demonstrating the potential of additive manufacturing for anatomical reproduction and replicating functional mechanical properties in soft tissue models. Self-oscillating systems convert steady external stimuli into sustained motion, enabling diverse applications in robotics, energy absorption, optics, and logic. Inspired by the adhesion–detachment behavior of climbing plants, we propose a novel light-powered self-adhesion oscillator comprising an elastic strip–substrate structure and a weight suspended by a photo-responsive liquid crystal elastomer fiber. By integrating a nonlinear beam deformation model with Dugdale’s cohesive model, we develop a nonlinear dynamic framework to describe the self-adhesion behavior of the elastic strip. Quasi-static analysis reveals two distinct operating modes: a static mode and a self-adhesion mode. Under constant light exposure, the liquid crystal elastomer fiber undergoes light-induced contraction, increasing peeling force and triggering a sudden transition from adhesion-on to adhesion-off. Upon entering the adhesion-off state, the fiber recovers its contraction, leading to a sharp return to the adhesion-on state. This cycle sustains a four-stage oscillation: gradual peeling, abrupt adhesion-off, gradual adhering, and abrupt adhesion-on. Furthermore, we identify the critical conditions for initiating self-adhesion and demonstrate effective control over the oscillation period. The system exhibits key advantages including amplitude controllable oscillation, widely tunable frequency, well-defined motion trajectories, and structural simplicity. These characteristics suggest promising potential for applications in self-healing adhesion systems, rescue devices, military engineering, and beyond. Full article

Printed flexible materials have garnered considerable attention as next-generation materials for bioelectronic applications, particularly hydrogels and elastomers, owing to their intrinsic softness, tissue-like mechanical compliance, and electrical conductivity. In contrast to conventional fabrication approaches, printing technologies enable precise spatial control, design versatility, and seamless integration with complex biological interfaces. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the progress in printable soft conductive materials, with a particular emphasis on the composition, processing, and functional roles of conductive hydrogels and elastomers. This review first introduces traditional fabrication methods for conductive materials and explains the motivation for using printing techniques. We then introduce two major classes of soft conductive materials, hydrogels and elastomers, and describe their applications in both in vitro systems, such as biosensors and soft stimulators, and in vivo settings, including neural interfaces and implantable devices. Finally, we discuss current challenges and propose future directions for advancing printed soft bioelectronics toward clinical translation. Full article

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) have shown great potential in the field of soft robotics due to their unique actuation capabilities. Despite the growing number of experimental studies in the soft robotics field, theoretical research remains limited. In this paper, a dynamic model of a bionic arm using an LCE fiber as artificial muscle is established, which exhibits periodic oscillation controlled by periodic illumination. Based on the assumption of linear damping and angular momentum theorem, the dynamics equation of the model oscillation is derived. Then, based on the assumption of linear elasticity model, the periodic spring force of the fiber is given. Subsequently, the evolution equations for the cis number fraction within the fiber are developed, and consequently, the analytical solution for the light-excited strain is derived. Following that, the dynamics equation is numerically solved, and the mechanism of the controllable oscillation is elucidated. Numerical calculations show that the stable oscillation period of the bionic arm depends on the illumination period. When the illumination period aligns with the natural period of the bionic arm, the resonance is formed and the amplitude is the largest. Additionally, the effects of various parameters on forced oscillation are analyzed. The results of numerical studies on the bionic arm can provide theoretical support for the design of micro-machines, bionic devices, soft robots, biomedical devices, and energy harvesters. This study provides a novel experimental setup and methodology for the quantitative investigation of evaporation-induced foaming behaviors in a polymer/small-molecule solution system (PSMS). In traditional dynamic test methods, it is difficult to precisely describe the evaporation-induced foaming process of a multicomponent solution because the concentration of light components in solution continuously decreases during ebullition, causing undesired changes in foaming behavior. In this study, a precisely controlled condensation reflux module was introduced into the setup to maintain pressure, temperature, and concentration of the PSMS at constant levels during the entire ebullition process, allowing dynamic test methods to quantify the evaporation-induced foamability. With this newly proposed device, experimental data of typical PSMS, polyolefin elastomer (POE)/n-hexane solution system, were obtained and modeled to illustrate the foam growth profile, thereby characterizing the dynamic foaming process based on a logistic growth function. The corresponding dimensionless number Σevap was calculated to evaluate evaporation-induced foam stability by analyzing the foam growth profile under varying pressure, concentration, and energy input levels. Furthermore, given that the PSMS represents a highly non-ideal system, the bubble nucleation rate J was modified in this work by introducing a correction coefficient δ to account for the non-ideal effects of macromolecules present in solutions. Additionally, another correction coefficient λ was incorporated into the Gibbs free energy term to adjust for supersaturation of liquid during nucleation. The experiment’s data align well with the modified bubble nucleation rate mechanism proposed herein. Full article

Magnetorheological (MR) foams represent a class of smart materials with unique tunable viscoelastic properties when subjected to external magnetic fields. Combining porous structures with embedded magnetic particles, these materials address challenges such as leakage and sedimentation, typically encountered in conventional MR fluids while offering advantages like lightweight design, acoustic absorption, high energy harvesting capability, and tailored mechanical responses. Despite their potential, challenges such as non-uniform particle dispersion, limited durability under cyclic loads, and suboptimal magneto-mechanical coupling continue to hinder their broader adoption. This review systematically addresses these issues by evaluating the synthesis methods (ex situ vs. in situ), microstructural design strategies, and the role of magnetic particle alignment under varying curing conditions. Special attention is given to the influence of material composition—including matrix types, magnetic fillers, and additives—on the mechanical and magnetorheological behaviors. While the primary focus of this review is on MR foams, relevant studies on MR elastomers, which share fundamental principles, are also considered to provide a broader context. Recent advancements are also discussed, including the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) to predict the rheological and magneto-mechanical behavior of MR materials, model complex device responses, and optimize material composition and processing conditions. AI applications in MR systems range from estimating shear stress, viscosity, and storage/loss moduli to analyzing nonlinear hysteresis, magnetostriction, and mixed-mode loading behavior. These data-driven approaches offer powerful new capabilities for material design and performance optimization, helping overcome long-standing limitations in conventional modeling techniques. Despite significant progress in MR foams, several challenges remain to be addressed, including achieving uniform particle dispersion, enhancing viscoelastic performance (storage modulus and MR effect), and improving durability under cyclic loading. Addressing these issues is essential for unlocking the full potential of MR foams in demanding applications where consistent performance, mechanical reliability, and long-term stability are crucial for safety, effectiveness, and operational longevity. By bridging experimental methods, theoretical modeling, and AI-driven design, this work identifies pathways toward enhancing the functionality and reliability of MR foams for applications in vibration damping, energy harvesting, biomedical devices, and soft robotics. Implantable cardiac devices are critical in improving patients’ quality of life through precise and continuous interaction between the device and pathological cardiac tissue. Due to the inherently rigid nature of conventional devices, several complications arise when interacting with soft cardiac tissue, caused by a mechanical mismatch between the device and myocardium. This leads to the excessive formation of fibrous tissue around the implanted device, ultimately compromising both device functionality and tissue health. To address these challenges, flexible electronics based on polymers and elastomers significantly softer than conventional rigid metals and silicon have been explored. The epicardial approach enables the device to conform to the curved myocardial surface and deform synchronously with cardiac motion, thereby improving mechanical compatibility. However, modulus mismatches between soft polymers and cardiac tissue can still lead to mechanical instability and non-uniform adhesion, potentially affecting long-term performance. This review comprehensively summarizes recent research advancements in epicardial patch electronics based on bioadhesive and conductive hydrogels. We emphasize current research directions, highlighting the potential of hydrogels in epicardial electronics applications. Critical discussion includes recent trends, ongoing challenges, and emerging strategies aimed at improving the properties of hydrogel-based epicardial patches. Future research directions to facilitate clinical translation are also outlined. Full article

Wearable sensors have rapidly advanced, enabling applications such as human activity monitoring, electronic skin, and biomimetic robotics. To meet the growing demands of these applications, multifunctional sensing has become essential for wearable devices. However, most existing studies predominantly focus on enhancing single-function sensing capabilities. This study introduces a multifunctional sensor that combines high stretchability for strain and pressure detection with ultraviolet (UV) sensing capability. To achieve simultaneous detection of strain, pressure, and UV light, a multi-sensing approach was employed: a capacitive method for strain and pressure detections and a resistive method utilizing a pn-heterojunction diode for UV detection. In the capacitive method, polyaniline (PANI) served as parallel-plate electrodes, while silicon-based elastomer acted as the dielectric layer. This configuration enabled up to 100% elongation and enhanced operational stability through encapsulation. The sensor demonstrated a strong linear relationship between capacitance value changes reasonably based on the area of PANI, and showed a good linearity with an R-squared value of 0.9918. It also detected pressure across a wide range, from low (0.4 kPa) to high (9.4 kPa). Furthermore, for wearable applications, the sensor reliably captured capacitance variations during finger bending at different angles. For UV detection, a pn-heterojunction diode composed of p-type silicon and n-type zinc oxide nanorods exhibited a rapid response time of 6.1 s and an on/off ratio of 13.8 at −10 V. Durability under 100% tensile strain was confirmed through Von Mises stress calculations using finite element modeling. Overall, this multifunctional sensor offers significant potential for a variety of applications, including human motion detection, wearable technology, and robotics. Full article

Touch is a crucial sense for advanced organisms, particularly humans, as it provides essential information about the shape, size, and texture of contacting objects. In robotics and automation, the integration of tactile sensors has become increasingly relevant, enabling devices to properly interact with their environment. This study aimed to develop a biomimetic, skin-inspired tactile sensor device capable of sensing applied force, characterizing it in three dimensions, and determining the point of application. The device was designed as a 4 × 4 matrix of tunneling magnetoresistive sensors, which provide a higher sensitivity in comparison to the ones based on the Hall effect, the current standard in tactile sensors. These detect magnetic field changes along a single axis, wire-bonded to a PCB and encapsulated in epoxy. This sensing array detects the magnetic field from an overlayed magnetorheological elastomer composed of Ecoflex and 5 µm neodymium–iron–boron ferromagnetic particles. Structural integrity tests showed that the device could withstand forces above 100 N, with an epoxy coverage of 0.12 mL per sensor chip. A 3D movement stage equipped with an indenting tip and force sensor was used to collect device data, which was then used to train neural network models to predict the contact location and 3D magnitude of the applied force. The magnitude-sensing model was trained on 31,260 data points, being able to accurately characterize force with a mean absolute error ranging between 0.07 and 0.17 N. The spatial sensitivity model was trained on 171,008 points and achieved a mean absolute error of 0.26 mm when predicting the location of applied force within a sensitive area of 25.5 mm × 25.5 mm using sensors spaced 4.5 mm apart. For points outside the testing range, the mean absolute error was 0.63 mm. Full article

Printed electronics employ established printing methods to create low-cost, mechanically flexible devices including batteries, supercapacitors, sensors, antennas and RFID tags on plastic, paper and textile substrates. This review focuses on the specific contribution of screen printing to that landscape, examining how ink viscosity, mesh selection and squeegee dynamics govern film uniformity, pattern resolution and ultimately device performance. Recent progress in advanced ink systems is surveyed, highlighting carbon allotropes (graphene, carbon nano-onions, carbon nanotubes, graphite), silver and copper nanostructures, MXene and functional oxides that collectively enhance mechanical robustness, electrical conductivity and radio-frequency behavior. Parallel improvements in substrate engineering such as polyimide, PET, TPU, cellulose and elastomers demonstrate the technique’s capacity to accommodate complex geometries for wearable, medical and industrial applications while supporting environmentally responsible material choices such as water-borne binders and bio-based solvents. By mapping two decades of developments across energy-storage layers and functional electronics, the article identifies the key process elements, recurring challenges and emerging sustainable practices that will guide future optimization of screen-printing materials and protocols for high-performance, customizable and eco-friendly flexible devices.
