The goals of the European Union towards the energy transition imply profound changes in the energy field, so as to promote sustainable energy development while fostering economic growth. To achieve these changes, the incorporation of sustainable technologies supporting decentralisation, energy efficiency, renewable energy production, and demand flexibility is of vital importance. Blockchain has the potential to change energy services towards this direction. To optimally exploit blockchain, innovative business models need to be designed, identifying the opportunities emerging from unmet needs, while also considering potential risks so as to take action to overcome them. In this context, the scope of this paper is to examine the opportunities and the risks that emerge from the adoption of blockchain in four innovative business models, while also identifying mitigation strategies to support and accelerate the energy transition, thus proposing optimal approaches of exploitation of blockchain in energy services. The business models concern Energy Performance Contracting with P4P guarantees, improved self-consumption in energy cooperatives, energy efficiency and flexibility services for natural gas boilers, and smart energy management for EV chargers and HVAC appliances. Firstly, the value proposition of the business models is analysed and results in a comprehensive SWOT analysis. Based on the findings of the analysis and consultations with relevant market actors, in combination with the examination of the relevant literature, risks are identified and evaluated through a qualitative assessment approach. Subsequently, specific mitigation strategies are proposed to address the detected risks. This research demonstrates that blockchain integration into these business models can significantly improve energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, enhance security, and support a more decentralised energy system, providing actionable insights for stakeholders to implement blockchain solutions effectively. Furthermore, according to the results, technological and legal risks are the most significant, followed by political, economic, and social risks, while environmental risks of blockchain integration are not as important. Strategies to address risks relevant to blockchain exploitation include ensuring policy alignment, emphasising economic feasibility, facilitating social inclusion, prioritising security and interoperability, consulting with legal experts, and using consensus algorithms with low energy consumption. The findings offer clear guidance for energy service providers, policymakers, and technology developers, assisting in the design, deployment, and risk mitigation of blockchain-enabled business models to accelerate sustainable energy development. The Impact of VAT Credit Refunds on Enterprises’ Sustainable Development Capability: A Socio-Technical Systems Theory Perspective

We investigate whether China’s Value-Added Tax (VAT) Credit Refund policy influences firms’ sustainable development capability (SDC), which reflects innovation-driven growth and green development. Exploiting the 2018 implementation of the VAT Credit Refund policy as a quasi-natural experiment, we employ a difference-in-differences (DID) approach and find causal evidence that the policy significantly enhances firms’ SDC. This suggests that fiscal instruments like VAT refunds are valued by firms as drivers of long-term sustainable and high-quality development. Our mediating analyses further reveal that the policy promotes firms’ SDC by strengthening artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and facilitating intelligent transformation. This mechanism “AI Capability Building—Intelligent Transformation” aligns with the socio-technical systems theory (STST), highlighting the interactive evolution of technological and social subsystems in shaping firm capabilities. The heterogeneity analyses indicate that the positive effect of VAT Credit Refund policy on SDC is more pronounced among small-scale and non-high-tech firms, firms with lower perceived economic policy uncertainty, higher operational diversification, lower reputational capital, and those located in regions with a higher level of marketization. We also find that the policy has persistent long-term effects, with improved SDC associated with enhanced ESG performance and green innovation outcomes. Our findings have important implications for understanding the SDC through the lens of STST and offer policy insights for deepening VAT reform and promoting intelligent and green transformation in China’s enterprises. The integration of virtual and augmented reality is transforming processes in the field of product design. This study evaluates the usability of immersive digital tools applied to industrial design through a combined market research and empirical case study, using the software ‘Gravity Sketch’ and the immersive headset ‘Meta Quest 3’. An embedded single case study was conducted based on the international standard ISO 9241-11, considering the dimensions of effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction, analysed through nine indicators: tasks completed, time to complete tasks, dimensional accuracy, interoperability, interactivity, fatigue, human error, learning curve, and perceived creativity. The results show a progressive improvement in user–system interaction across the seven Design Units, as users become more familiar with immersive technologies. Effectiveness improves as users gain experience, though it remains sensitive to design complexity. Efficiency shows favourable values even in early stages, reflecting operational fluency despite learning demands. Satisfaction records the greatest improvement, driven by smoother interaction and greater creative freedom. These findings highlight the potential of immersive tools to support design processes while also underlining the need for future research on sustained usability, interface ergonomics, and collaborative workflows in extended reality environments. Disruption in Southern Africa’s Money Laundering Activity by Artificial Intelligence Technologies

The rise in illicit financial activities across the South Africa–Zimbabwe corridor, with an estimated annual loss of $3.1 billion demands advanced AI solutions to augment traditional detection methods. This study introduces FALCON, a groundbreaking hybrid transformer–GNN model that integrates temporal transaction analysis (TimeGAN) and graph-based entity mapping (GraphSAGE) to detect illicit financial flows with unprecedented precision. By leveraging data from South Africa’s FIC, Zimbabwe’s RBZ, and SWIFT, FALCON achieved 98.7%, surpassing Random Forest (72.1%) and human auditors (64.5%), while reducing false positives to 1.2% (AUC-ROC: 0.992). Tested on 1.8 million transactions, including falsified CTRs, STRs, and Ethereum blockchain data, FALCON uncovered $450 million laundered by 23 shell companies with a cross-border detection precision of 94%, directly mitigating illicit financial flows in Southern Africa. For regulators, FALCON met FAFT standards, yielding 92% court admissibility, and its GDPR-compliant design (ε = 1.2 differential privacy) met stringent legal standards. Deployed on AWS Graviton3, FALCON processed 2 million transactions/second at $0.002 per 1000 transactions, demonstrating real-time scalability, making it cost-effective for financial institutions in emerging markets. As the first AI framework tailored for Southern Africa’s financial ecosystems, FALCON sets a new benchmark for ethical AML solutions in emerging economies with immediate applicability to CBDC supervision. The transparent validation of publicly available data underscores its potential to transform global financial crime detection. Full article

“The Internet of Things” is a relatively new idea that refers to objects that can connect to the Internet and exchange data. The Internet of Things (IoT) enables novel interactions between objects and people by interconnecting billions of devices. While there are many IoT-related products, challenges pertaining to their effective implementation, particularly the lack of knowledge and confidence about security, must be addressed. To provide IoT-based enterprises with a platform for efficiency and sustainability, this study aims to identify the critical elements that influence the growth of a successful company integrated with an IoT system. This study proposes a decision support tool that evaluates the influential features of IoT using the Pythagorean Fuzzy and Interval Grey approaches within the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). This study demonstrates that security, value, and connectivity are more critical than telepresence and intelligence indicators. When both strategies are used, market demand and information privacy become significant indicators. Applying the Pythagorean Fuzzy approach enables the identification of sensor networks, authorization, market demand, and data management in terms of importance. The application of the Interval Grey approach underscores the importance of data management, particularly in sensor networks. The indicators that were finally ranked are compared to obtain a good coefficient of agreement. These findings offer practical insights for promoting sustainability in enterprise operations by optimizing IoT infrastructure and decision-making processes. Full article

In this study, the impact of moderate and high CO2 and O2 levels was compared to low and moderate gas combinations during prolonged storage on the quality of Regina sweet cherries harvested in different maturity stages, particularly in terms of decreasing internal browning. Fruits were harvested in two different maturity stages (Light and Dark Mahogany skin color) and stored in CA of 15% CO2 + 10% O2; 10% CO2 + 10% O2; 10% CO2 + 5% O2; 5% CO2 + 5% O2 and MA of 4 to 5% CO2 + 16 to 17% O2 for 30 and 40 days at 0 °C and 90% RH, followed by a marketing period. After the storage, both maturity stages significantly reduced internal browning, decay, and visual quality losses in CA with 10–15% CO2 and 10% O2. In addition, it preserved luminosity, total soluble solids (TSSs), titratable acidity (TA), and bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins and phenols. This treatment also maintained the visual appearance of the sweet cherries, favoring their market acceptance. At the same time, the light red fruits showed a better general quality compared to darker color after the storage. In conclusion, a controlled atmosphere with optimized CO2 and O2 concentrations, together with harvesting with a Light Mahogany external color, represents an effective strategy to extend the shelf life of Regina sweet cherries up to 40 days plus the marketing period, maintaining their physical and sensory quality for export markets. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are considered a good energy source to maintain supply and demand, mitigate intermittency, and ensure grid stability. The primary contribution of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of global energy markets and a critical analysis of BESS’ participation in frequency control ancillary service (FCAS) markets. This review synthesises the current state of knowledge on the evolution of the energy market and the role of battery energy storage systems in providing grid stability, particularly frequency control services, with a focus on their integration into evolving high-renewable-energy-source (RES) market structures. Specifically, solar PV and wind energy are emerging as the main drivers of RES expansion, accounting for approximately 61% of the global market share. A BESS offers greater flexibility in storage capacity, scalability and rapid response capabilities, making it an effective solution to address emerging security risks of the system. Moreover, a BESS is able to provide active power support through power smoothing when coupled with solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind generation. In this paper, we provide an overview of the current status of energy markets, the contribution of battery storage systems to grid stability and flexibility, as well as the challenges that BESS face in evolving electricity markets. This paper selects 50 listed commercial banks in China from 2012 to 2023 as research samples, and employs the fixed effects model and Hansen’s threshold regression method to systematically examine the impact mechanism and non-linear characteristics of FinTech development on the profitability of commercial banks. The key findings are summarized as follows: (1) FinTech significantly undermines the overall profitability of commercial banks by reshaping the competitive landscape of the industry and intensifying the technology substitution effect. This is primarily reflected in the reduction in traditional interest income and the erosion of market share in intermediary business. (2) Heterogeneity analysis indicates that large state-owned banks and joint-stock banks experience more pronounced negative impacts compared to small and medium-sized banks. (3) Additional research findings reveal a significant single-threshold effect between FinTech and bank profitability, with a critical value of 4.169. When the development level of FinTech surpasses this threshold, its inhibitory effect diminishes substantially, suggesting that after achieving a certain degree of technological integration, commercial banks may partially alleviate external competitive pressures through synergistic effects. This study offers crucial empirical evidence and theoretical support for commercial banks to develop differentiated technology strategies and for regulatory authorities to design dynamically adaptable policy frameworks. Fan growth serves as a critical performance indicator for the sustainable development of livestreaming e-commerce (LSE). However, existing research has paid limited attention to this topic. This study investigates the unique interactive advantages of LSE over traditional e-commerce by examining how interactivity drives fan growth through the mediating role of user retention and the moderating role of anchors’ facial attractiveness. To conduct the analysis, real-time data were collected from 1472 livestreaming sessions on Douyin, China’s leading LSE platform, between January and March 2023, using Python-based (3.12.7) web scraping and third-party data sources. This study operationalizes key variables through text sentiment analysis and image recognition techniques. Empirical analyses are performed using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression with robust standard errors, propensity score matching (PSM), and sensitivity analysis to ensure robustness. The results reveal the following: (1) Interactivity has a significant positive effect on fan growth. (2) User retention partially mediates the relationship between interactivity and fan growth. (3) There is a substitution effect between anchors’ facial attractiveness and interactivity in enhancing user retention, highlighting the substitution relationship between anchors’ personal characteristics and livestreaming room attributes. This research advances the understanding of interactivity’s mechanisms in LSE and, notably, is among the first to explore the marketing implications of anchors’ facial attractiveness in this context. The findings offer valuable insights for both academic research and managerial practice in the evolving livestreaming commerce landscape. Full article

This longitudinal study examines how perceived brand globalness (PBG) influenced sustainable purchase intentions (SPI) between 2021 and 2024, incorporating factors such as perceived brand quality (PBQ), perceived brand prestige (PBP), brand–cause fit (BCF), and the moderating effect of consumer ethnocentrism (CE). Using survey responses from 415 participants, the study employed partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) via SmartPLS4. The findings reveal that CE emerged as significant in 2024, while PBP’s impact on SPI weakened—suggesting a growing consumer association of prestige with sustainability. Heightened post-pandemic ethical awareness further underscores the importance of brand values. Contrary to earlier research indicating low CE in developing markets, the 2024 results demonstrate an unexpected rise in CE, highlighting its evolving significance. Overall, the study emphasizes the necessity for global brands to adopt sustainable, locally attuned strategies to succeed in developing countries. Full article

The cement industry is a significant contributor to global carbon dioxide emissions, primarily due to the energy demands of its production process and its reliance on clinker, a material formed through the high-temperature calcination of limestone. Strategies to reduce emissions include the adoption of low-carbon fuels, the use of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, and the integration of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) to reduce the clinker content. The effectiveness of these measures depends on a complex set of interactions involving technological feasibility, market dynamics, and regulatory frameworks. This study presents a system dynamics model designed to assess how various decarbonization approaches influence long-term emission trends within the cement industry. The model accounts for supply chains, production technologies, market adoption rates, and changes in cement production costs. This study then analyzes a number of scenarios where there is large-scale sustained investment in each of three carbon mitigation strategies. The results show that CCS by itself allows the cement industry to achieve carbon neutrality, but the high capital investment results in a large cost increase for cement. A combined approach using alternative fuels and SCMs was found to achieve a large carbon reduction without a sustained increase in cement prices, highlighting the trade-offs between cost, effectiveness, and system-wide interactions. Background: Rapid urbanization has intensified the challenges of freight transport, particularly in last-mile (LM) delivery, leading to rising costs and environmental externalities. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have emerged as a promising innovation to address these issues. While much of the existing literature emphasizes business and operational perspectives, this study focuses on the acceptance of AVs from the standpoint of e-consumers—individuals who make purchases via digital platforms—in an emerging market context. Methods: Grounded in an extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2), which is specifically suited to consumer-focused technology adoption research, this study incorporates five constructs tailored to AV adoption. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was applied to survey data collected from 304 e-consumers in Northeast Brazil. Results: The findings reveal that performance expectancy, hedonic motivation, and environmental awareness exert significant positive effects on acceptance and intention to use AVs for LM delivery. Social influence shows a weaker, yet still positive, impact. Importantly, price sensitivity exhibits a minimal effect, suggesting that while consumers are generally cost-conscious, perceived value may outweigh price concerns in early adoption stages. Conclusions: These results offer valuable insights for policymakers and logistics providers aiming to implement consumer-oriented, cost-effective AV solutions in LM delivery, particularly in emerging economies. The findings emphasize the need for strategies that highlight the practical, emotional, and environmental benefits of AVs to foster market acceptance. Full article

Weed management remains a critical challenge in the U.S. container ornamental production industry, where weeds not only compete with crops for limited resources but also harbor pests and pathogens, thereby diminishing plant quality and marketability. The paper explores the economic impact of weed infestations, herbicide resistance development, and the limited availability of selective herbicides for ornamental crops in the United States. This review synthesizes current chemical weed control tactics, focusing not only on both preemergence and postemergence herbicides commonly used in ornamental nurseries, but also organic alternatives and integrated weed management (IWM) approaches as complementary strategies by evaluating their effectiveness, crop safety, and usage. There is a critical need for research in the areas of alternative chemical options such as insecticides, miticides (e.g., Zerotol and Tetra Curb Max), and organic products for liverwort control in greenhouses. Although essential oils and plant-based extracts show some potential, their effectiveness and practical use remain largely unexplored. Full article

“Innovatives” or “Sceptics”: Views on Sustainable Food Packaging in the New Global Context by Generation Z Members of an Academic Community

The growing concern over environmental sustainability has intensified the focus on consumers’ perceptions of eco-friendly food packaging, especially among younger generations. This study aims to investigate the attitudes, preferences, and barriers faced by Greek university students regarding sustainable food packaging, a demographic considered pivotal for driving future consumption trends. An online questionnaire assessing perceptions, preferences, and behaviours related to sustainable packaging was administered to students, with responses measured on a five-point Likert scale. Three hundred and sixty-four students took part in this survey, with the majority (60%) of them being female. Principal component analysis was employed to identify underlying factors influencing perceptions, and k-means cluster analysis revealed two consumer segments: “Innovatives”, including one hundred and ninety-eight participants (54%), who demonstrate strong environmental awareness and willingness to adopt sustainable behaviours, and “Sceptics”, including one hundred sixty-six participants (46%), who show moderate engagement and remain cautious in their choices. Convenience, affordability, and clear product communication emerged as significant factors shaping student preferences. The findings suggest that targeted educational campaigns and transparent information are essential to converting positive attitudes into consistent purchasing behaviours. This research provides valuable insights for policymakers and marketers looking to design effective sustainability strategies tailored to the student population. Full article

Sugar Beet Profitability in Lubelskie Province, Poland

The work presents a comprehensive analysis and costing of sugar beet cultivation in 2020–2022, for individual farms of the Lublin region. About 120 farms were analyzed. Based on this analysis, the criteria for a model farm were determined and adopted for the calculation of sugar beet production costs. ARIMA process modeling was performed, based on which forecasts were determined for several selected parameters. Customs tariffs introduced by the USA have a drastic impact on the economy. The effects of the COVID19 pandemic may also have a significant impact on the current market situation. Forecasting in the current geopolitical situation is very difficult because of the lack of stationarity of parameters. The financial result obtained by growers is mainly influenced by indirect costs absorbing 61.31% of total costs in 2020. In 2021 and 2022, indirect costs were 61.16% and 59.61% of production income, respectively. Among this group of costs, the largest share is accounted for by the costs of sowing services, sugar beet harvesting, and soil liming amounting from 14.27% to 15.92%. During the analyzed period, sugar beet cultivation remained profitable, with a production profitability index of 1.31 in 2020 and 2021, and 1.10 in 2022. The unit cost of production increased every year. In 2020, it was 14.27% and in 2021, it increased to 15.19%. The unit cost of production in 2022 was the highest, at 23.41%. Sugar beet cultivation is one of the profitable activities in agricultural production, but it is characterized by high production costs, which increased during the years analyzed (2020 to 2022), topping out at 90.87% of total revenue. The information and data presented in this study will be used in the development of a farmer-oriented application and will support the creation of an expert system for sugar beet growers. Cost forecasting will enable farmers to plan their production more effectively. Full article
