Preventing progressive collapse induced by accidental events poses a critical challenge in the design and construction of resilient structures. While substantial progress has been made in planar structures, the progressive collapse mechanisms of precast concrete spatial structures—particularly regarding the effects of precast slabs—remain inadequately explored. This study develops a refined finite element modeling approach to investigate progressive collapse mechanisms in fully bonded prestressed precast concrete (FB-PPC) spatial frames, both with and without precast slabs. The modeling approach was validated against available test data from related sub-assemblies, and applied to assess the collapse performance. A series of pushdown analyses were conducted on the spatial frames under various column removal scenarios. The load–displacement curves, slab contribution, and failure modes under different conditions were compared and analyzed. A simplified energy-based dynamic assessment was additionally employed to offer a rapid estimation of the dynamic collapse capacity. The results show that when interior or side columns fail, the progressive collapse process can be divided into the beam action stage and the catenary action (CA) stage. During the beam action stage, the compressive membrane action (CMA) of the slabs and the compressive arch action (CAA) of the beams work in coordination. Additionally, the tensile membrane action (TMA) of the slabs strengthens the CA in the beams. When the corner columns fail, the collapse stages comprise the beam action stage followed by the collapse stage. Due to insufficient lateral restraints around the failed column, the development of CA is limited. The membrane action of the slabs cannot be fully mobilized. The contribution of the slabs is significant, as it can substantially enhance the vertical resistance and restrain the lateral displacement of the columns. The energy-based dynamic assessment further reveals that FB-PPC spatial frames exhibit high ductility and residual strength following sudden column removal, with dynamic load–displacement curves showing sustained plateaus or gentle slopes across all scenarios. The inclusion of precast slabs consistently enhances both the peak load capacity and the residual resistance in dynamic collapse curves. Full article

This paper addresses the critical challenge of selecting suitable pile foundations in port engineering by systematically investigating the axial bearing behavior of large-diameter steel pipe piles and prestressed high-strength concrete (PHC) piles. The study integrates both numerical simulations and field tests within the context of the Yancheng Dafeng Port Security Facilities Project. A self-balanced static load numerical model for PHC piles was developed using Plaxis 3D, enabling the simulation of load-displacement responses, axial force transfer, and side resistance distribution. The accuracy of the model was verified through a comparison with field static load test data. With the verified model parameters, the internal force distribution of steel pipe piles was analysed by modifying material properties and adjusting boundary conditions. A comparative analysis of the two pile types was conducted under identical working conditions. The results reveal that the ultimate bearing capacities of the 1# steel pipe pile and the 2# PHC pile are 6734 kN and 6788 kN, respectively. Despite the PHC pile having a 20% larger diameter, its ultimate bearing capacity is comparable to that of the steel pipe pile, suggesting a more efficient utilisation of material strength in the latter. Further numerical simulations indicate that, under the same working conditions, the ultimate bearing capacity of the steel pipe pile exceeds that of the PHC pile by 18.43%. Additionally, the axial force distribution along the steel pipe pile shaft is more uniform, and side resistance is mobilised more effectively. The reduction in side resistance caused by construction disturbances, combined with the slenderness ratio (L/D = 41.7) of the PHC pile, results in 33.87% of the pile’s total bearing capacity being attributed to tip resistance. The findings of this study provide crucial insights into the selection of optimal pile types for terminal foundations, considering factors such as bearing capacity, environmental conditions, and economic viability. This paper presents field investigations of a corrugated steel soil–steel arch structure with a span of 25.7 m and a rise of 9.0 m—currently the largest single-span structure of its kind in Europe. The structure, serving as a wildlife crossing along the DK16 expressway in northeastern Poland, was constructed using deep corrugated steel plates (500 mm× 237 mm) made from S315MC steel, without additional reinforcements such as stiffening ribs or geosynthetics. The study focused on monitoring the structural behavior during the critical backfilling phase. Displacements and strains were recorded using 34 electro-resistant strain gauges and a geodetic laser system at successive backfill levels, with particular attention to the loading stage at the crown. The measured results were compared with predictions based on the Swedish Design Method (SDM). The SDM equations did not accurately predict internal forces during backfilling. At the crown level, bending moments and axial forces were overestimated by approximately 69% and 152%, respectively. At the final backfill level, the SDM underestimated bending moments by 55% and overestimated axial forces by 90%. These findings highlight limitations of current design standards and emphasize the need for revised analytical models and long-term monitoring of large-span soil–steel structures. Full article

After the 2011 earthquake, lake water depletion has become a widespread issue in Sikkim, especially in regions classified as high to very high seismic zones, where many lakes have turned into seasonal water bodies. This study investigates Chochen Lake in the Barapathing area of Sikkim’s Pakyong district, which is facing severe water seepage and instability. The problem, intensified by the 2011 seismic event and ongoing local construction, is examined through subsurface fracture mapping using Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) and profiling techniques. A statistical factor method, applied to interpret VES data, helped identify fracture patterns beneath the lake. Results from two sites (VES-1 and VES-2) reveal significant variations in weathered and semi-weathered soil layers, indicating fractures at depths of 17–50 m (VES-1) and 20–55 m (VES-2). Higher fracture density near VES-1 suggests increased settlement risk and ground displacement compared to VES-2. Contrasting resistivity values emphasize the greater instability in this zone and the need for cautious construction practices. The findings highlight the role of seismic-induced fractures in ongoing water depletion and underscore the importance of continuous dewatering to stabilize the swampy terrain. Full article

In this study, steel fibers were used to improve the mechanical properties of high-strength self-compacting concrete (HSSCC), and its effect on the fracture mechanical properties was investigated by a three-point bending test with notched beams. Coupled with the digital image correlation (DIC) technique, the fracture process of steel-fiber-reinforced HSSCC was analyzed to elucidate the reinforcing and fracture-resisting mechanisms of steel fibers. The results indicate that the compressive strength and flexural strength of HSSCC cured for 28 days exhibited an initial decrease and then an enhancement as the volume fraction (Vf) of steel fibers increased, whereas the flexural-to-compressive ratio linearly increased. All of them reached their maximum of 110.5 MPa, 11.8 MPa, and 1/9 at 1.2 vol% steel fibers, respectively. Steel fibers significantly improved the peak load (FP), peak opening displacement (CMODP), fracture toughness (KIC), and fracture energy (GF) of HSSCC. Compared with HSSCC without steel fibers (HSSCC-0), the FP, KIC, CMODP, and GF of HSSCC with 1.2 vol% (HSSCC-1.2) increased by 23.5%, 45.4%, 11.1 times, and 20.1 times, respectively. The horizontal displacement and horizontal strain of steel-fiber-reinforced HSSCC both increased significantly with an increasing Vf. HSSCC-0 experienced unstable fracture without the occurrence of a fracture process zone during the whole fracture damage, whereas the fracture process zone formed at the notched beam tip of HSSCC-1.2 at its initial loading stage and further extended upward in the beams of high-strength self-compacting concrete with a 0.6% volume fraction of steel fibers and HSSCC-1.2 as the load approaches and reaches the peak. This article analyzes the operating principle of the BMM sensor emitter in order to improve the accuracy of the wireless determination of the BMM sensor coordinates under a massif of destroyed rock in the context of the problem of determining the shift of rocks during gold ore mining. Using numerical simulations, FEM has been developed to develop digital models reflecting individual cases of the propagation of the magnetic field of the emitter located in various geological conditions and positions relative to the rock surface and the vertical axis. The accuracy of determining the coordinates of the radio beacon in the rock has been analyzed, and data on the deviation of the coordinates of the peaks of the magnetic field strength from the radio beacon axis have been obtained in cases of a heterogeneous composition of the rock massif, the influence of the deviation of the emitter axis angle from the vertical, the influence of the unevenness of the collapse relief, and the influence of the superposition of fields from different radiation sources. A study has been carried out to determine the direction of the radio beacon search based on the resulting vector of the emitter’s magnetic field strength. Full article

This study investigates the behavior of phosphate ion transport through two structurally distinct anion-exchange membranes—AMV (homogeneous) and HC-A (heterogeneous)—in an electrodialysis system under both static and stirred conditions at varying pH levels. Chronopotentiometric and current–voltage analyses were used to investigate the influence of pH and hydrodynamics on ion transport. Under underlimiting (ohmic) conditions, the AMV membrane exhibited simultaneous transport of H2PO4 and HPO42− ions at neutral and mildly alkaline pH, while such behavior was not verified at acidic pH and in all cases for the HC-A membrane. Under overlimiting current conditions, AMV favored electroconvection at low pH and exhibited significant water dissociation at high pH, leading to local pH shifts and chemical equilibrium displacement at the membrane–solution interface. In contrast, the HC-A membrane operated predominantly under strong electroconvective regimes, regardless of the pH value, without evidence of water dissociation or equilibrium change phenomena. Stirring significantly impacted the electrochemical responses: it altered the chronopotentiogram profiles through the emergence of intense oscillations in membrane potential drop at overlimiting currents and modified the current–voltage behavior by increasing the limiting current density, reducing electrical resistance, and compressing the plateau region that separates ohmic and overlimiting regimes. Additionally, both membranes showed signs of NH3 formation at the anodic-side interface under pH 7–8, associated with increased electrical resistance. These findings reveal distinct ionic transport characteristics and hydrodynamic sensitivities of the membranes, thus providing valuable insights for optimizing phosphate recovery via electrodialysis. Transmission towers are particularly vulnerable to extreme wind events, which can lead to structural damage or collapse, thereby compromising the stability of power transmission systems. Enhancing the wind-resistant capacity of these towers is therefore critical for improving the reliability and resilience of electrical infrastructure. This study utilizes finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate the structural response of a 220 kV transmission tower subjected to fluctuating wind loads, effectively capturing the dynamic characteristics of wind-induced forces. A comprehensive dynamic analysis is conducted to account for uncertainties in wind loading and variations in wind direction. Through this approach, this study identifies the most critical wind angle and local structural weaknesses, as well as determines the threshold wind speed that precipitates structural collapse. To improve structural resilience, a concurrent multi-scale modeling strategy is adopted. This allows for localized analysis of vulnerable components while maintaining a holistic understanding of the tower’s global behavior. To mitigate failure risks, the traditional perforated plate reinforcement technique is implemented. The reinforcement’s effectiveness is evaluated based on its impact on load-bearing capacity, displacement control, and stress redistribution. Results reveal that the critical wind direction is 45°, with failure predominantly initiating from instability in the third section of the tower leg. Post-reinforcement analysis demonstrates a marked improvement in structural performance, evidenced by a significant reduction in top displacement and stress intensity in the critical leg section. Overall, these findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the wind-induced fragility of transmission towers and offer practical reinforcement strategies that can be applied to enhance their structural integrity under extreme wind conditions. A novel prefabricated pile foundation is presented to improve the disaster resistance of the pole line. Bearing performance analysis of prefabricated inclined pile foundations for electric poles under downward pressure-horizontal loading is carried out, and the effects of prefabricated foundation dimensions and pile inclination on the horizontal load–displacement curves at the top of the poles, the horizontal displacement and settlement at the top of the piles, the horizontal displacement and tilt rate of the poles’ bodies and piles bending moments are investigated. The findings indicate the following: as the prefabricated foundation size grows, the bearing capacity of the foundation improves, and the anti-overturning ability of the electric pole improves; the foundation size increases from 0.9 m to 1.35 m, the anti-overturning bearing capacity of the foundation increases by 15.77%, the maximum bending moment of the foundation pile body increases by 19.7%, and the maximum bending moment occurs at about 0.2 m of the pile body; the bearing capacity of inclined piles is larger than that of straight piles—with an increase in the pile inclination angle, the foundation bearing performance increases, and the overturning bearing capacity of the poles increases; the pile inclination angle grows from 0° to 20°, the overturning bearing performance of the foundation increases by 19.2%, the maximum bending moment of the foundation piles reduces by 21.2%, and the maximum of the bending moment occurs at the pile body at a position of about 0.2 m. Helium (He) accumulation in tungsten—widely used as a plasma-facing material in fusion reactors—can lead to clustering, trap mutation, and eventual formation of helium bubbles, critically impacting material performance. To clarify the atomic-scale mechanisms governing this process, we conducted systematic molecular statics and molecular dynamics simulations across a wide range of vacancy cluster sizes (n = 1–27) and temperatures (500–2000 K). We identified the onset of trap mutation through abrupt increases in tungsten atomic displacement. At 0 K, the critical helium-to-vacancy (He/V) ratio required to trigger mutation was found to scale inversely with cluster size, converging to ~5.6 for large clusters. At elevated temperatures, thermal activation lowered the mutation threshold and introduced a distinct He/V stability window. Below this window, clusters tend to dissociate; above it, trap mutation occurs with near certainty. This critical He/V ratio exhibits a linear dependence on temperature and can be described by a size- and temperature-dependent empirical relation. Our results provide a quantitative framework for predicting trap mutation behavior in tungsten, offering key input for multiscale models and informing the design of radiation-resistant materials for fusion applications. A recently proposed method called “controlled swelling of monolithic films” was implemented to prepare ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) ultrafiltration membranes. For the first time, the effect of UHMWPE molecular weight (MW) on the structure and properties of the membranes prepared via this special case of thermally induced phase separation was studied in detail. The morphology and properties of the membranes were studied using SEM, DSC, liquid–liquid displacement porometry, and standard methods for the evaluation of mechanical properties, permeance, rejection, and abrasion resistance. High-quality membranes with a tensile strength of 5.0–17.8 MPa, a mean pore size of 25–50 nm, permeance of 17–107 L m−2 h−1 bar−1, rejection of model contaminant (blue dextran) of 72–98%, and great abrasion resistance can be prepared only if the MW of the polymer in the initial monolithic film is sufficiently high. The properties of the membranes can effectively be controlled by changing the MW of the polymer and the mass fraction of the latter in the swollen film. Shrinkage is responsible for the variation in the membrane properties. The membranes prepared from a higher-MW polymer are more prone to shrinking after the removal of the solvent. Shrinkage decreases before rising again and minimizes with an increase in the polymer content in the swollen film. Full article

Research on helicopter stability is essential for the design of flotation systems and serves as a primary basis for evaluating wind and wave resistance. The drainage volume method and fluid–solid coupling method are commonly used for calculating floating characteristics. However, the drainage volume method ignores the flexibility of airbags and their interaction with the helicopter, while the fluid–solid coupling method is computationally intensive. In contrast, the analysis of a helicopter’s hydrostatic floating characteristics is a static problem. It suffices to obtain relevant results when the helicopter reaches a stationary state, without the need to accurately simulate the dynamic process of achieving that state. Therefore, this paper proposes an equivalent calculation method, in which the hydrostatic effect of water on the helicopter is represented by the hydrostatic pressure applied across the entire flotation system. The finite element method (FEM) is then employed to determine the final static state, and the results are compared with those from the drainage volume method and available experimental data to validate the reliability of the proposed approach. To elucidate the influence mechanism of airbags and flexible connecting straps on the lateral static stability of helicopters, this paper analyzes airbag positions at various heeling angles and examines the impact of different internal airbag pressures. The results indicate that the main factor affecting lateral static stability is the displacement of the airbags. This displacement causes variations in the airbag’s buoyancy and center of buoyancy, thereby reducing the lateral heeling moment. Full article

Background: This study aimed to investigate how barbell type (elastic vs. inelastic) and lifting speed affect postural stability and lower limb muscle activation during the single-leg deadlift (SLDL), a common unilateral exercise in rehabilitation and performance training. Methods: Twenty-seven healthy adults performed SLDLs using both elastic and inelastic barbells under three lifting speeds (normal, fast, and power). Center of pressure (COP) displacement in the anterior–posterior (AP) and medial–lateral (ML) directions and electromyographic (EMG) activity of eight lower limb muscles were measured. Results: COP displacement was significantly lower when using elastic barbells (AP: F = 6.509, p = 0.017, η2 = 0.200, ω2 = 0.164; ML: F = 9.996, p = 0.004, η2 = 0.278, ω2 = 0.243). EMG activation was significantly higher for the gluteus medius, biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and gastrocnemius (all p < 0.01), especially under power conditions. Significant interactions between barbell type and speed were found for the gluteus medius (F = 13.737, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.346, ω2 = 0.176), semitendinosus (F = 6.757, p = 0.002, η2 = 0.206, ω2 = 0.080), and tibialis anterior (F = 3.617, p = 0.034, η2 = 0.122, ω2 = 0.029). Conclusions: The findings suggest that elastic barbells improve postural control and enhance neuromuscular activation during the SLDL, particularly at higher speeds. These results support the integration of elastic resistance in dynamic balance and injury prevention programs. Full article

Nodular Cast Iron (NCI, also known as ductile iron) is widely used in important components such as crankshafts for automotive engines and internal combustion engines, as well as storage and transportation containers for spent fuel in nuclear power plants, due to its good comprehensive mechanical properties such as strength, toughness, and wear resistance. The effect of temperature on the fracture behavior of NCI was investigated using compact tensile (CT) specimens at different temperatures. The results showed that the conditional fracture toughness parameter (KQ) of the NCI specimens firstly increased and then decreased with decreasing temperature. The crack tip opening displacement δm shows a significant ductile–brittle transition behavior with the decreasing of temperature. δm remains constant in the upper plateau region but sharply decreases in the ductile–brittle region (−60 °C to −100 °C) and stabilizes at a smaller value in the lower plateau region. Multiscale fractographic analysis indicated that the fracture mechanism changed from ductile fracture (above −60 °C) to ductile–brittle mixed (−60 °C to −100 °C) and then to completely brittle fracture (below −100 °C). As the temperature decreased, the fracture characteristics changed from ductile dimples to dimple and cleavage mixed and then to brittle cleavage. Full article

Aftershocks are inevitable phenomena following a mainshock, especially after a major earthquake. However, the cumulative damage caused by aftershocks and its impact on structural performance evaluation has only recently received significant attention. This study explores the effects of mainshock–aftershock (MS–AS) sequences, including multiple consecutive aftershocks, acting on 3D steel moment-resisting frame structures. Following nonlinear time history analysis, several fundamental variables such as residual interstory drift, maximum displacement, plastic hinge formation, and base shear are evaluated to examine cumulative damage. In this context, the findings depicted in terms of aftershocks play a significant role in exacerbating plastic deformations and damage accumulation in steel moment frames. Subsequently, to mitigate cumulative damage on steel moment frames, retrofitting strategies were implemented. Retrofitting strategies effectively reduce cumulative damage and improve seismic resilience under multiple earthquake events. This research highlights the limitations of single-event seismic assessments and the need to incorporate sequential earthquake effects in design and retrofit practices. Furthermore, it provides new insights into mitigating further damage by retrofitting existing structures under multiple earthquakes. Full article
