Cycling represents a significant share of urban transportation, especially in terms of last-mile delivery. It has clear benefits for delivery times, as well as for environmental issues related to freight distribution. Furthermore, the increasing accessibility of low-cost environmental sensors (LCSs) provides an opportunity for urban monitoring in any situation. Moving in this direction, this research aims to investigate the use of LCSs to monitor particulate PM2.5 and PM10 levels and map them over delivery ride paths. The calibration process took 49 days of measurements into account, spanning different seasonal conditions (from May 2024 to November 2024). The employment of multiple linear regression and robust regression revealed a strong correlation between pollutant levels from two sources and other factors such as temperature and humidity. Subsequently, a one-month trial was carried out in the city of Faenza (Italy). In this study, a commercially available LCS was mounted on a cargo bike for measurement during delivery processes. This approach was adopted to reveal biker exposure to air pollutants. In this way, the operator’s route would be designed to select the best route in terms of delivery timing and polluting factors in the future. Furthermore, the integration of environmental monitoring to map urban environments has the potential to enhance the accuracy of local pollution mapping, thereby supporting municipal efforts to inform citizens and develop targeted air quality strategies. Improving charge transport in the aggregated state of nanocomposites is challenging due to the large number of defects present at grain boundaries. To enhance the charge transfer and photogenerated carrier extraction of MnOx nanofibers, a MnOx/GO (graphene oxide) nanocomposite was prepared. The effects of GO content and bias on the optoelectronic properties were studied. Representative light sources at 405, 650, 780, 808, 980, and 1064 nm were used to examine the photoelectric signals. The results indicate that the MnOx/GO nanocomposites have photocurrent switching behaviours from the visible region to the NIR (near-infrared) when the amount of GO added is optimised. It was also found that even with zero bias and storage of the nanocomposite sample at room temperature for over 8 years, a good photoelectric signal could still be extracted. This demonstrates that the MnOx/GO nanocomposites present a strong built-in electric field that drives the directional motion of photogenerated carriers, avoids the photogenerated carrier recombination, and reflect a good photophysical stability. The strength of the built-in electric field is strongly affected by the component ratios of the resulting nanocomposite. The formation of the built-in electric field results from interfacial charge transfer in the nanocomposite. Modulating the charge behaviour of nanocomposites can significantly improve the physicochemical properties of materials when excited by light with different wavelengths and can be used in multidisciplinary applications. Since the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs is the key bottleneck in multidisciplinary fields, this study provides a simple, low-cost method of tailoring defects at grain boundaries in the aggregated state of nanocomposites. These results can be used as a reference for multidisciplinary fields with low energy consumption. Full article

Optimizing Urban Mobility Through Complex Network Analysis and Big Data from Smart Cards

Urban public transportation systems face increasing pressure from shifting travel patterns, rising peak-hour demand, and the need for equitable and resilient service delivery. While complex network theory has been widely applied to analyze transit systems, limited attention has been paid to behavioral segmentation within such networks. This study introduces a frequency-based framework that differentiates high-frequency (HF) and low-frequency (LF) passengers to examine how distinct user groups shape network structure, congestion vulnerability, and robustness. Using over 20 million smart-card records from Beijing’s multimodal transit system, we construct and analyze directed weighted networks for HF and LF users, integrating topological metrics, temporal comparisons, and community detection. Results reveal that HF networks are densely connected but structurally fragile, exhibiting lower modularity and significantly greater efficiency loss during peak periods. In contrast, LF networks are more spatially dispersed yet resilient, maintaining stronger intracommunity stability. Peak-hour simulation shows a 70% drop in efficiency and a 99% decrease in clustering, with HF networks experiencing higher vulnerability. Based on these findings, we propose differentiated policy strategies for each user group and outline a future optimization framework constrained by budget and equity considerations. This study contributes a scalable, data-driven approach to integrating passenger behavior with network science, offering actionable insights for resilient and inclusive transit planning. Full article

The coastal sandy land in northeast Hainan Province is typical for this land type, also exhibiting strong sand activity. This study is based on wind speed, wind direction, and sediment transport data obtained at a field meteorological station using an omnidirectional sand accumulation instrument from 2020 to 2024, studying the coastal aeolian environment and sediment transport distribution characteristics in the region. Its findings provide a theoretical basis for comprehensively analyzing the evolution of coastal aeolian landforms and the evaluation and control of coastal aeolian hazards. The research results show the following: (1) The annual average threshold wind velocity for sand movement in the study area is 6.84 m/s, and the wind speed frequency (frequency of occurrence) is 51.54%, dominated by easterly (NE, ENE) and southerly (S, SSE) winds. (2) The drift potential (DP) refers to the potential amount of sediment transported within a certain time and spatial range, and the annual drift potential (DP) and resultant drift potential (RDP) of Mulan Bay from 2020 to 2024 were 550.82 VU and 326.88 VU, respectively, indicating a high-energy wind environment. The yearly directional wind variability index (RDP/DP) was 0.59, classified as a medium ratio and indicating blunt bimodal wind conditions. The yearly resultant drift direction (RDD) was 249.45°, corresponding to a WSW direction, indicating that the sand in Mulan Bay is generally transported in the southwest direction. (3) When the measured data extracted from the sand accumulation instrument in the study area from 2020 to 2024 were used for statistical analysis, the results showed that the total sediment transport rate (the annual sediment transport of the observation section) in the study area was 110.87 kg/m·a, with the maximum sediment transport rate in the NE direction being 29.26 kg/m·a. These results suggest that when sand fixation systems are constructed for relevant infrastructure in the region, the construction direction of protective forests and other engineering measures should be perpendicular to the net direction of sand transport. Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are increasingly pivotal for reducing carbon emissions in supply chain management (SCM); however, research exploring their combined potential from a sustainability perspective remains fragmented. This study aims to systematically map the research landscape and synthesize evidence on the applications, benefits, and challenges. Methods: A systematic scoping review was conducted on 23 peer-reviewed studies from the Scopus database, published between 2013 and 2024. Data were systematically extracted and analyzed for publication trends, application domains (e.g., transportation, warehousing), specific AI and robotic technologies, emissions reduction strategies, and implementation challenges. Results: The analysis reveals that AI-driven logistics optimization is the most frequently reported strategy for reducing transportation emissions. At the same time, robotic automation is commonly associated with improved energy efficiency in warehousing. Despite these benefits, the reviewed literature consistently identifies significant barriers, including the high energy demands of AI computation and complexities in data integration. Conclusions: This review confirms the transformative potential of AI and robotics for developing low-carbon supply chains. An evidence-based framework is proposed to guide practical implementation and identify critical gaps, such as the need for standardized validation benchmarks, to direct future research and accelerate the transition to sustainable SCM. The global energy transition and increasingly rigorous legal regulations aimed at climate protection are driving the search for alternative energy sources, including renewable energy sources (RESs) and waste heat. However, the mismatch between supply and demand presents a significant challenge. Thermal energy storage (TES) technologies, particularly mobile thermal energy storage (M-TES), offer a potential solution to address this gap. M-TES can not only balance supply and demand but also facilitate the transportation of heat from the source to the recipient. This paper reviews the current state of M-TES technologies, focusing on their technology readiness level, key operating parameters, and advantages and disadvantages. It is found that M-TES can be based on sensible heat, latent heat, or thermochemical reactions, with the majority of research and projects centered around latent heat storage. Regarding the type of research, significant progress has been made at the laboratory and simulation levels, while real-world implementation remains limited, with few pilot projects and commercially available systems. Despite the limited number of real-world M-TES implementations, currently existing M-TES systems can store up to 5.4 MWh in temperatures ranging from 58 °C to as high as 1300 °C. These findings highlight the potential of the M-TES and offer data for technology selection, simultaneously indicating the research gaps and future research directions. Full article

Digestate valorization is essential for sustainable waste management and circular economy strategies, yet large-scale adoption faces technical, economic, and environmental challenges. Beyond waste-to-energy conversion, digestate is a valuable soil amendment, enhancing soil structure and reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers. However, its agronomic benefits depend on feedstock characteristics, treatment processes, and application methods. This study reviews digestate composition, treatment technologies, regulatory frameworks, and environmental impact assessment through Life Cycle Assessment. It analyzes the influence of functional unit selection and system boundary definitions on Life Cycle Assessment outcomes and the effects of feedstock selection, pretreatment, and post-processing on its environmental footprint and fertilization efficiency. A review of 28 JCR-indexed articles (2018–present) analyzed LCA studies on digestate, focusing on methodologies, system boundaries, and impact categories. The findings indicate that Life Cycle Assessment methodologies vary widely, complicating direct comparisons. Transportation distances, nutrient stability, and post-processing strategies significantly impact greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient retention efficiency. Techniques like solid–liquid separation and composting enhance digestate stability and agronomic performance. Digestate remains a promising alternative to synthetic fertilizers despite market uncertainty and regulatory inconsistencies. Standardized Life Cycle Assessment methodologies and policy incentives are needed to promote its adoption as a sustainable soil amendment within circular economy frameworks. Full article

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication is a fundamental technology in the development of intelligent transportation systems, encompassing vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), infrastructure (V2I), and pedestrian (V2P) communications. This technology enables connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) to interact with their surroundings, significantly enhancing road safety, traffic efficiency, and driving comfort. However, as V2X communication becomes more widespread, it becomes a prime target for adversarial and persistent cyberattacks, posing significant threats to the security and privacy of CAVs. These challenges are compounded by the dynamic nature of vehicular networks and the stringent requirements for real-time data processing and decision-making. Much research is on using novel technologies such as machine learning, blockchain, and cryptography to secure V2X communications. Our survey highlights the security challenges faced by V2X communications and assesses current ML and blockchain-based solutions, revealing significant gaps and opportunities for improvement. Specifically, our survey focuses on studies integrating ML, blockchain, and multi-access edge computing (MEC) for low latency, robust, and dynamic security in V2X networks. Based on our findings, we outline a conceptual framework that synergizes ML, blockchain, and MEC to address some of the identified security challenges. This integrated framework demonstrates the potential for real-time anomaly detection, decentralized data sharing, and enhanced system scalability. The survey concludes by identifying future research directions and outlining the remaining challenges for securing V2X communications in the face of evolving threats. Full article

Natural hydrogen is generated by fairly deep processes and/or in low-permeability rocks. In such contexts, fluids circulate mainly through the network of faults and fractures. However, hydrogen flows from these hydrogen-generating layers can reach sedimentary rocks with more typical permeability and porosity, allowing H2 flows to spread out rather than be concentrated in fractures. In that case, three different H2 transport modes exist: advection (displacement of water carrying dissolved gas), diffusion, and free gas Darcy flow. Numerical models have been run to compare the efficiency of these different modes and the pathway they imply for the H2 in a sedimentary basin with active aquifers. The results show the key roles of these aquifers but also the competition between free gas flow and the dissolved gas displacement which can go in opposite directions. Even with a conservative hypothesis on the H2 charge, a gaseous phase exists at few kilometers deep as well as free gas accumulation. Gaseous phase displacement could be the faster and diffusion is neglectable. The modeling also allows us to predict where H2 is expected in the soil: in fault zones, eventually above accumulations, and, more likely, due to exsolution, above shallow aquifers. Full article

This study examines whether regional infrastructure can predict economic resilience in European regions, focusing on resistance, recovery, and reorientation during the COVID-19 crisis. While infrastructure is widely recognized as a key factor influencing regional resilience, its explicit role has been underexplored in the European context. Using a comprehensive literature review and spatial econometric models applied to NUTS-2 level data from 2017 to 2024, we investigate the direct and spatial spillover effects of various infrastructure types—transportation, healthcare, tourism, education, and digital access—on regional resilience outcomes. We apply OLS and four spatial models (SEM, SLX, SDEM, SDM) under 29 spatial weighting matrices to account for spatial autocorrelation. Results show that motorway density, early school leaving, and healthcare infrastructure in neighbouring regions significantly affect resistance. For recovery, railway density and GDP per capita emerge as key predictors, with notable spatial spillovers. Reorientation is shaped by population structure, railway density, and tourism infrastructure, with both positive and negative spatial dynamics observed. The findings underscore the importance of infrastructure not only in isolation but also within regional systems, revealing complex interdependencies. We conclude that policymakers must consider spatial externalities and coordinate infrastructure investments to enhance regional economic resilience across interconnected Europe. Full article

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis comparing the implementation of electric and diesel buses for public transport services in the low-density area of the City of Jastrebarsko in Croatia. It utilizes a multidimensional approach and incorporates direct and indirect costs, such as vehicle acquisition, operation, charging, maintenance, and environmental impact costs during the lifecycle of the buses. The results show that, despite the higher initial investment in electric buses, these vehicles offer savings, especially when coupled with significantly reduced emissions of pollutants, which decreases indirect costs. However, local contexts differ, leading to a need to revise whether or not a municipality can finance the procurement and operations of such a fleet. The paper utilizes a robust methodological framework, integrating a proposal based on real-world data and demand and combining it with predictive analytics to forecast long-term benefits. The findings of the paper support the introduction of buses as a sustainable solution for Jastrebarsko, which provides insights for public transport planners, urban planners, and policymakers, with a discussion about the specific issues regarding the introduction, procurement, and operations of buses of different propulsion in a low-density area. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) electrospun fiber membranes possess unique micro-nano structures and excellent properties. Adjusting their wettability enables the directional transportation of lubricants. A conventional method for adjusting porosity and wettability involves inducing membrane shrinkage using absolute ethanol and heat treatment. However, the shrinkage response and the corresponding changes in the tensile properties of TPU fiber membranes after induction remain unclear, limiting their applications. Thus, in this study, after being peeled off, the samples were first left to stand at room temperature (RT) for 24 h to release residual stress and stabilize their dimensions, and then treated with dehydrated ethanol at RT and high temperature, respectively, with their shrinkage behaviors observed and recorded. The results showed that TPU nanofiber membranes shrank significantly in absolute ethanol, and the degree of shrinkage was temperature-dependent. The shrinkage rates were 2% and 4% in dehydrated ethanol at room temperature and high temperature, respectively, and heating increased the shrinkage effect by 200%. These findings prove that absolute ethanol causes TPU fibers to shrink, and high temperatures further promote shrinkage. However, although the strong synergistic effect of heat and solvent accelerates shrinkage, it may induce internal structural defects, resulting in the deterioration of mechanical properties. The contraction response induced by anhydrous ethanol stimulation can be used to directionally adjust the local density and modulus of TPU nanofiber membranes, thereby changing the wettability. This approach provides new opportunities for applications in areas such as medium transportation and interface friction reduction in lubrication systems. Full article

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted significant attention due to their widespread applications in various fields such as environmental monitoring, agriculture, intelligent transportation, and healthcare. In these networks, the power cost of a sensor node is closely related to the radius of its coverage area, following a nonlinear relationship where power increases as the coverage radius grows according to an attenuation factor. This means that increasing the coverage radius of a sensor leads to a corresponding increase in its power cost. Consequently, minimizing the total power cost of the network while all clients are served has become a crucial research topic. The power cover problem focuses on adjusting the power levels of sensors to serve all clients while minimizing the total power cost. This survey focuses on the power cover problem and its related variants in WSNs. Specifically, it introduces nonlinear integer programming formulations for the power cover problem and its related variants, all within the specified sensor setting. It also provides a comprehensive overview of the power cover problem and its variants under both specified and unspecified sensor settings, summarizes existing results and approximation algorithms, and outlines potential directions for future research. Application of Protein Structure Encodings and Sequence Embeddings for Transporter Substrate Prediction

Membrane transporters play a crucial role in any cell. Identifying the substrates they translocate across membranes is important for many fields of research, such as metabolomics, pharmacology, and biotechnology. In this study, we leverage recent advances in deep learning, such as amino acid sequence embeddings with protein language models (pLMs), highly accurate 3D structure predictions with AlphaFold 2, and structure-encoding 3Di sequences from FoldSeek, for predicting substrates of membrane transporters. We test new deep learning features derived from both sequence and structure, and compare them to the previously best-performing protein encodings, which were made up of amino acid k-mer frequencies and evolutionary information from PSSMs. Furthermore, we compare the performance of these features either using a previously developed SVM model, or with a regularized feedforward neural network (FNN). When evaluating these models on sugar and amino acid carriers in A. thaliana, as well as on three types of ion channels in human, we found that both the DL-based features and the FNN model led to a better and more consistent classification performance compared to previous methods. Direct encodings of 3D structures with Foldseek, as well as structural embeddings with ProstT5, matched the performance of state-of-the-art amino acid sequence embeddings calculated with the ProtT5-XL model when used as input for the FNN classifier. In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has experienced considerable developments and has played an important role in various domains such as industry, agriculture, healthcare, transportation, and environment, especially for smart cities. Along with that, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are considered to be important components of the IoT system (WSN-IoT) to create smart applications and automate processes. As the number of connected IoT devices increases, privacy and security issues become more complicated due to their external working environments and limited resources. Hence, solutions need to be updated to ensure that data and user privacy are protected from threats and attacks. To support the safety and reliability of such systems, in this paper, security issues in the WSN-IoT are addressed and classified as identifying security challenges and requirements for different kinds of attacks in either WSNs or IoT systems. In addition, security solutions corresponding to different types of attacks are provided, analyzed, and evaluated. We provide different comparisons and classifications based on specific goals and applications that hopefully can suggest suitable solutions for specific purposes in practical. We also suggest some research directions to support new security mechanisms. Full article
