The reorganization of academic work following the COVID-19 pandemic has intensified debate regarding the effects of work modality on faculty well-being, particularly in Latin American contexts characterized by structural inequalities and digital divides. This study examines the influence of work modality on the integrated well-being of university faculty in Peru. A quantitative, non-experimental explanatory design was employed with a sample of 448 faculty members from public and private universities. Occupational well-being and quality of life were assessed using validated instruments and subsequently integrated into a higher-order construct due to the absence of discriminant validity. Structural relationships were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with bootstrapping (5000 resamples). The results indicate that work modality significantly predicts integrated well-being (β = 0.823; p < 0.001), although the model explains a limited proportion of variance (R2 = 0.168). Comparative analysis revealed that faculty in in-person modality report significantly higher levels of well-being and quality of life than those in virtual modality. These findings suggest that work modality operates as a structural condition shaping faculty well-being and highlight the need for institutional policies that promote balanced and human-centered work designs in higher education. Population aging intensifies the need for built environments that support healthy and independent living while reducing preventable risks. This integrative review examines how architectural design, safety measures, and corporate security can function as an integrated, layered system for creating age-friendly environments across public spaces, housing, and intergenerational community settings. Drawing on a systematic search of literature published between 2010 and 2026 across databases including Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed, supplemented by international standards and policy documents, the review analyses how universal design principles, injury prevention strategies, and governance routines intersect to sustain mobility, reduce harms, and protect data, devices, and operational continuity. The findings indicate that gaps in any layer, such as inaccessible layouts, poorly maintained safety systems, or weak cybersecurity, can undermine overall effectiveness, compromise trust, and affect older adults’ autonomy. The COVID-19 pandemic further exposed these interdependencies, accelerating smart technology adoption while exacerbating digital inequality and social isolation, particularly in rural settings. This review concludes that age-friendly environments require not only barrier-free architecture and proportionate safety measures, but also robust governance structures that ensure accountability, lifecycle maintenance, and responsible data practices. Integrating these three domains provides a foundation for resilient, trustworthy, and health-promoting environments that enable older adults to remain active, socially connected, and secure. The transition to a circular economy creates winners and losers, challenging the assumption that green growth is inherently inclusive. While environmental benefits are documented, the distributional consequences remain poorly understood. This study analyzes how socioeconomic and labor inequalities shape the effectiveness of circular economy policies. Using panel data from 90 countries (2019–2024) combined with global governance indicators, we employ fixed-effects models, instrumental variables, and configurational analysis (fsQCA) to identify causal mechanisms. The results reveal a critical institutional threshold: circular economy policies reduce inequality only in countries with high institutional quality (WGI > 1.39). In contexts with weak institutions or positive Skill Structure Balance (SSB), these policies are regressive. Social protection and digital financial inclusion moderate these effects, acting as buffers against distributional risks. These findings challenge the “automatic social benefits” narrative, suggesting that environmental ambition requires parallel investments in institutional capacity and human capital to achieve a just transition. In the digital era, online attention has become a key indicator of tourism competitiveness and destination visibility. This study proposes a two-dimensional framework to evaluate the competitive state of online attention by combining its current magnitude and growth dynamics. Using Baidu Index data, the study applies the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) matrix and the coefficient of variation to analyze online attention patterns of Beijing’s 5A–level tourist attractions from 2011 to 2025. The results show clear polarization in online attention. A small number of iconic attractions consistently dominate digital visibility, while many other sites exhibit unstable and uneven attention trajectories. These patterns reflect the cumulative effects of consumer behavior, information-seeking preferences, and algorithmically mediated content environments, which reinforce attention concentration and competitive inequality over time. External shocks, particularly the COVID–19 pandemic, caused sharp declines in online attention in 2020, followed by an uneven recovery in subsequent years, highlighting the volatility of digital attention systems. The study also demonstrates the managerial value of the proposed framework. By classifying attractions according to attention levels and growth potential, the framework supports differentiated marketing and demand–redistribution strategies. For instance, increasing the visibility of high-potential but under-visited attractions can help redirect visitors away from overcrowded “Star/GC” sites and encourage more balanced spatial and temporal visitation. Overall, this study proposes a quantitative and replicable framework that integrates digital attention dynamics, algorithmic filtering, and consumer behavior into destination competitiveness analysis. The framework supports evidence-based and sustainability-oriented destination management by informing adaptive marketing and demand management strategies that can help alleviate overtourism and balance visitor flows. However, the study relies on a single digital platform and lacks direct sustainability indicators. Future research should integrate multi-platform data and link online attention metrics to measurable environmental, social, and economic sustainability outcomes. Full article

Africa has the world’s youngest population, and many young adults rely on informal or temporary employment, making digital financial literacy (DFL) critical for long-term financial resilience and sustainable economic development. In this paper, we present findings from a two-phase mixed-methods study. In Phase 1, we surveyed 300 Rwandans aged 18–32 on financial knowledge, digital skills, and financial behaviors to explore key gaps in DFL. Results show modest financial knowledge and moderate digital literacy, with common budgeting and saving practices but key cybersecurity awareness-practice gaps. Gender and education disparities are also evident. To address the low loan literacy observed in Phase 1 findings, we conceived an AI-enabled mobile money loan literacy chatbot and explored user interactions with the chatbot, along with perceived usability and usefulness in Phase 2. Our findings highlight design considerations for promoting intention to adopt DFL interventions. The study aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 (No Poverty), 5 (Gender Equality), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and 10 (Reduced Inequalities). Pediatric pain remains a highly prevalent and under-addressed health problem worldwide, largely due to educational gaps, limited humanization of care, and insufficient integration of digital and pedagogical innovations in higher education, and the purpose of this study is to describe and implement an international, higher education–driven model to improve training in humanized pediatric pain management. This multicenter mixed-methods study involves 15 universities from Europe, Africa, and Latin America and includes the development and cross-cultural validation of the HUPEDCARE-Q questionnaire to identify knowledge gaps, the design of an open-access, multilingual digital learning platform (PEDCARE) that integrates learning management and social networking functions, and the implementation of capacity-building workshops based on a training-the-trainers model for students, educators, health professionals, and families. The expected outcomes of the project include the establishment of a standardized instrument for assessing educational needs, the creation of a scalable digital educational environment, and the feasibility of international academic collaboration to strengthen competencies in pediatric pain care. The study suggests that higher education, combined with digital transformation and culturally sensitive approaches, may support the humanization of pediatric pain management and address educational and health inequities, although further research is needed to confirm these potential impacts. Rapid global urbanization has exacerbated the conflict between land expansion and ecosystem carrying capacity, making the enhancement of urban land use efficiency (ULUE), a critical pathway for sustainable development. While the digital economy offers a new engine for green transition, its spatiotemporal mechanisms remain underexplored. Taking China, a representative emerging economy, as a case study, this paper investigates the impact of digital transformation on ULUE from 2013 to 2020. By integrating the Super-EBM model with GTWR, we reveal a dynamic evolution where national efficiency improves while regional polarization intensifies. A key finding challenges traditional agglomeration theory, that population density increasingly exerts a negative impact on ULUE, suggesting that congestion costs and ecological pressures are outweighing agglomeration benefits in the digital era. Furthermore, digital infrastructure demonstrates a consistent positive effect by overcoming geographical barriers, whereas environmental regulation exhibits a J-curve effect that is initially constraining but eventually boosts efficiency. These insights provide a roadmap for developing nations to leverage digital tools for balancing economic growth with ecological sustainability, emphasizing the need for spatially differentiated strategies to manage the digital divide and urban congestion. Hate speech on social media reproduces norms of inequality and gender stereotypes, disproportionately affecting women. This study proposes a hybrid approach that integrates emotional tone classification with explicit hostility detection to strengthen preventive moderation. We constructed a corpus from three open data sets (1,236,371 records; 1,003,991 after ETL) and represented the text using TF-IDF and contextual RoBERTa embeddings. We trained individual models (RoBERTa fine-tuned, Random Forest, and XGBoost) and a stacking metamodel (Gradient Boosting) that combines their probabilities. On the test set, the ensemble outperformed the base classifiers, achieving accuracy of 0.93 in hate detection and 0.90 in emotion classification, with an AUC of 0.98 for emotion classification. We implemented a RESTful API and a web client to validate the moderation flow before publication, along with an administration panel for auditing. Performance tests in a prototype deployment (Google Colab exposed through an Ngrok tunnel) provided proof-of-concept validation, revealing concurrency limitations from around 300 users due to infrastructure constraints. In general, the results indicate that incorporating emotional tone analysis improves the model’s ability to identify implicit hostility and offers a practical way to promote safer digital environments. The probabilistic outputs produced by the ensemble model were subsequently analyzed using the Bayesian Calibration and Optimal Design under Asymmetric Risk (BACON-AR) framework, which serves as a mathematical post hoc decision layer for evaluating classification behaviour under unequal error costs. Rather than modifying the trained architecture or improving its predictive performance, the framework identifies a cost-sensitive operating threshold that minimizes the total expected risk under the selected asymmetric cost configuration. The experiments were conducted using an English-language data set; therefore, the findings of this study are limited to hate speech detection in English. Full article

Financial technologies (Fintech) have rapidly reshaped access to financial services, particularly in developing countries where traditional banking remains limited. This study investigates fintech’s role in advancing financial inclusion by analyzing panel data from 89 developing economies gathered from Global Findex reports (2011–2021), complemented by International Monetary Fund (IMF), UNU-WIDER, and PRIO datasets. We applied a random-effects regression model and GMM, incorporating fintech adoption alongside macroeconomic and institutional variables such as education, governance quality, and trade openness. Our results show that fintech is the most significant driver of financial inclusion, especially in expanding account ownership, with education and institutional quality further enhancing outcomes. Conversely, we show that population growth and income disparities constrain progress, while government expenditure and GDP growth display mixed effects. We also find that fintech reduces transaction costs and barriers, yet its impact depends on digital literacy, infrastructure, and governance. In conclusion, our findings highlight that fintech represents a transformative but unevenly utilized tool, capable of fostering broader economic participation and reducing inequality when paired with supportive policies and institutional frameworks. The sustainability of information poses an ever-greater challenge in the digital age, particularly within local media ecosystems, where access to technology does not necessarily lead to informed participation or stronger ties with institutions. In contexts such as Ecuador, persistent inequalities shape the way people access, use and trust information, reinforcing complex forms of the digital divide. This study analyses how the sustainability of information is reflected in media consumption patterns and levels of institutional engagement within a regional context. Based on a survey of 1784 people in the province of Imbabura, the study applies a combined approach using cluster analysis and random forest models to identify distinct audience profiles. The results reveal four distinct groups, demonstrating that the intensity and diversity of media use are more relevant than mere digital access. High levels of digital use do not guarantee greater institutional engagement; instead, hybrid patterns emerge that combine traditional, digital and institutional media in different ways. The findings show that digital access alone is not sufficient to ensure information sustainability or the formation of institutional opinion. From a public policy perspective, universities and public institutions should promote digital literacy, build trust and design more targeted communication strategies to reduce information inequalities and foster informed participation. Guaranteeing equitable access to computational thinking (CT) remains a persistent challenge in computing education, particularly across socioeconomically diverse school contexts. Although prior research has demonstrated the effectiveness of block-based and physical computing environments, limited empirical evidence has examined whether structured instructional mediation can compensate for contextual disparities. This quasi-experimental pre–post study addresses this gap by analyzing CT development in three socioeconomically diverse primary schools in Chile (N=88, third grade), including private urban, public urban, and rural public institutions. Students engaged in scaffolded Scratch programming and Arduino simulation activities designed to explicitly support abstraction, sequencing, and debugging processes. These activities were framed within a broader STEAM learning approach, integrating computational thinking with problem-solving, experimentation, and interdisciplinary reasoning. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in instructional time across contexts (F(2,85)=14.62, p<0.001, η2=0.26), indicating structural disparities in pacing. However, no statistically significant differences were observed in CT gains (F(2,85)=0.31, p=0.74), suggesting that structured pedagogical scaffolding buffered contextual inequalities. These findings provide empirical evidence from a Latin American non-WEIRD context and advance the conceptualization of instructional mediation as a compensatory mechanism for equity in early computing education. This study contributes to digital equity research by demonstrating that instructional design quality may play a more decisive role than infrastructural availability in enabling computational thinking development for all learners. Background: Healthcare policy in the United Kingdom recognizes that teenagers and young adults (TYAs: 16–24 years at diagnosis) require specialist care. In England, Principal Treatment Centers (PTCs) exist, delivering enhanced care exclusively within the PTC or as ‘joint care’ with designated hospitals (DHs). Central to this is the TYA multidisciplinary team (MDT) and an outreach model coordinating care between hospitals. We previously reported similar outcomes regardless of care location. Aims: To compare TYA experiences of care with healthcare professionals’ perspectives of the service they deliver. Methods: Mixed methods across England and Wales were used. The TYA-MDT identified TYAs who then received a postal invite to a cross-sectional survey capturing experiences of places of care, treatment, healthcare professional support (HCP), mental health, sexuality/fertility, clinical trials and care coordination. Comparisons were made based on exposure to care in a specialist TYA environment within 6 months of diagnosis: all-TYA-PTC (all care in the TYA-PTC, n = 70, 28%), no-TYA-PTC (no care in the TYA-PTC (n = 87, 35%): care delivered in a children/adult unit only), and joint care (care in a TYA-PTC and in a children’s/adult unit, n = 91, 36%). HCP perspectives were captured by rapid ethnography. Results: A total of 250/1056 (24%) TYAs participated. Overall, 200 (80%) rated their teams as excellent/good for helping them prepare for treatment. No evidence of significant differences existed between categories of care for proportions receiving support from key TYA-related professionals: TYA cancer nurse specialists (all-TYA-PTC n = 58, 91%; joint care n = 71, 88%; no-TYA-PTC n = 64, 82%) and social workers (all-TYA-PTC n = 30, 55%; joint care n = 36, 48%; no-TYA-PTC n = 28, 38%). A trend of diminishing support from youth support co-coordinators existed (all-TYA-PTC 63%; joint care 49%; no-TYA-PTC 40%, p = 0.069). This may explain why few differences in patient experiences existed across categories of care. Forty-nine HCPs participated. They were more critical in their interpretation of care, highlighting inequity in resources and challenges in some pathways and coordination. Conclusions: Similar access to age-appropriate support across care settings is likely to reflect recruitment methods. When TYAs are known to the MDT, age-appropriate care can be mobilized beyond TYA units, which could explain the equitable outcomes observed across different care locations in young people who responded to the survey. Nevertheless, gaps persist in communication and coordination, particularly within joint care models, and in the involvement of allied health professionals such as dieticians and physiotherapists, whose input is essential for rehabilitation and return to normal life. Strengthening these areas will require continued investment in workforce capacity and digital infrastructure to support genuinely coordinated, developmentally appropriate TYA cancer care. Background: Women with atrial fibrillation experience a higher lifetime risk of ischemic stroke, greater stroke severity, and worse functional outcomes than men. Preventive strategies focused on AF detection may therefore miss critical opportunities for early intervention in women. Methods: We developed a decision-analytic Markov model using real-world primary care data from Catalonia (Spain) to evaluate an artificial intelligence (AI) enabled strategy for upstream thromboembolic risk detection. The intervention combined electronic health record–based risk prediction, targeted digital rhythm screening, and individualized anticoagulation. Lifetime clinical and economic outcomes were estimated for adults aged ≥65 years, with pre-specified sex-stratified analysis. Results: Compared with usual care, the AI-enabled strategy reduced ischemic stroke, major adverse cardiovascular events, and long-term disability. Absolute reductions in stroke and disability were greater in women, reflecting higher baseline thromboembolic risk. Per 1000 high-risk women, the strategy prevented more strokes and generated larger quality-adjusted life-year gains than in men. From both healthcare payer and societal perspectives, the intervention was cost-saving in women, driven by reductions in stroke-related disability and long-term care. Conclusions: AI-enabled upstream thromboembolic risk detection may deliver particularly important benefits for older women and represents a promising approach to reduce sex-based inequities in stroke prevention. In recent decades, the Ucayali region, the main territory of the Asheninka communities, has experienced increasing socio-environmental pressures associated with climate change, educational inequality, and territorial vulnerability in rural and indigenous contexts. In response, this research proposes the design of a sustainable agricultural school for the Asheninka community, conceived as an educational building that integrates biophilic strategies to enhance environmental performance and spatial quality. The methodological approach comprises a literature review, site-specific environmental analysis based on hydrometeorological data, and the development of an architectural proposal focused on sustainable building design. Digital tools such as Revit and SketchUp were employed alongside official climatic data sources to support design decision-making. The proposal includes twelve biophilic agricultural classrooms incorporating passive design strategies, rainwater harvesting systems with a capacity of 22.5 m3 per day per classroom, and photovoltaic-powered public lighting systems. Results indicate that the integration of natural ventilation, green infrastructure, and locally sourced materials contributes to significant improvements in thermal comfort, humidity control, and energy autonomy within the educational facilities. The architectural complex is complemented by green corridors and collective open spaces that reinforce environmental performance at the site scale. This study demonstrates that sustainable educational buildings adapted to local ecosystems and climatic conditions can function as effective infrastructures for environmental mitigation and resilient rural development, contributing to more sustainable forms of urban and rural living. This mixed-methods study explores the views and experiences of 55 English-language teacher candidates in Chile who designed gamified project-based lessons aimed at fostering inclusive learning and social justice in culturally diverse classrooms. Data were collected through lesson plans, semi-structured interviews, and a Likert-scale survey, and were analysed using inductive content analysis and descriptive statistics. The findings reveal that participants valued gamification for enhancing student engagement, collaboration, and critical thinking, and they perceived gains in their ability to integrate social justice themes into language teaching. However, discrepancies emerged when participants had to plan lessons that had a social justice orientation because they perceived they did not have enough competence to approach equity-oriented themes. This study adopts a justice lens that foregrounds power, agency, and digital equity in teacher candidates’ lesson-planning skills to examine how they can redistribute voice, recognise situated knowledges, and expand their capacity to act within and against structural constraints. The study underscores the need for teacher education programmes to move beyond technical and motivational uses of gamification and digital tools. From their lesson plans, teacher candidates were not simply adopting digital tools at a technical level but seem to be designing an integrated pedagogical ecosystem that aligned gamification and project-based learning. However, it is inconclusive whether they are able to design gamified PBL environments that do not reproduce existing social and educational inequalities and ensure that access and participation are carefully scaffolded.
