Integrated qiaopi office–residence heritage preserves the material setting of remittance-letter operations together with domestic, educational, and ritual activities. In Lingnan’s hot–humid and disaster-prone environment, condition records need to be repeatable, spatially traceable, and continuously updatable. Taking Jingzu Jiashu and Mingde Jiashu, two former qiaopi office sites in Chaoshan, as case studies, this research develops an evidence-traceable digital conservation workflow integrating multi-source documentation; an adopted YOLOv8 surface-deterioration baseline; qualitative Grad-CAM visualization; structured deterioration records; and semi-automatic, human-confirmed Revit/HBIM association. UAV and terrestrial photography, mobile LiDAR/scanning, handheld measurement, measured drawings, point-cloud and reality-based products, and geometric models were organized into case-specific HBIM environments. The adopted deterioration dataset comprised 362 original images at 512 × 512 pixels and 2024 bounding-box annotations for five visually identifiable categories: spalling, staining, plants, saltpetering, and crack. The original images were divided into 253 training, 72 validation, and 37 independent-test images, while augmentation was restricted to the training subset, increasing the training pool to 1600 images. The previously established YOLOv8 baseline achieved a Precision of 0.85, Recall of 0.72, mAP50 of 0.83, and mAP50–95 of 0.58. Grad-CAM heatmaps were used as qualitative aids to examine model-emphasized image regions. Retained detections associated with Jingzu Jiashu and Mingde Jiashu were converted into versioned records containing source-image identifiers, deterioration classes, detector confidence, survey information, spatial references, verification states, and revision histories. Candidate spatial associations were generated through case identifiers, façade or space zones, element identifiers, and available spatial evidence, while final M1–M3 associations required human confirmation. By preserving source provenance, spatial uncertainty, and record histories, the workflow provides an auditable information basis for routine inspection, post-event review, maintenance prioritization, repair interpretation, and resilience-oriented preventive conservation. The workflow supports screening-level deterioration recognition and information management but does not provide causal diagnosis, structural assessment, exact affected-area measurement, building-independent generalization, or automatic repair recommendations. Background/Objectives: A surface feature first noticed after aesthetic treatment may be misclassified as treatment-created. This single-patient observation examined a stable medial tear-trough contour noticed after midface volumization. The aims were to map its clinically continuous course across anatomical layers and assess whether a superficial orbicularis oculi (OOc)-related component could modify its visibility. Methods: Clinical examination, palpation-guided surface marking, retrospective photography, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), thin-section computed tomography (CT), high-frequency ultrasound, and qualitative color Doppler were correlated using the marked course as a common spatial reference. Results: Diffuse fullness decreased after clinically indicated hyaluronidase treatment, whereas a narrower palpable line persisted; retrospective photographs showed similar earlier topography. CT/CBCT identified a bilateral asymmetric osseous correlate confined to the superior medial segment. Ultrasound identified a superficial band-like structure along the medial and inferior border of OOc with sonographic features compatible with an OOc-related muscular component; it was more superficial on the left and separated from the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi/levator labii superioris (LLSAN/LLS) field by adipose tissue. Qualitative color Doppler localized a deeper angular venous pathway and a superficial tributary passing beneath the band. The clinical course was continuous, but its correlates changed by segment and plane. Conclusions: In this patient, the contour was best understood as a layered boundary rather than a single substrate. Changes in surrounding volume may have increased its visibility, while the OOc-related band may have sharpened the edge adjacent to the tear-trough hollow. Layer-specific classification may be useful before corrective treatment is considered. Full article

Landscape observatories have gained increasing relevance as socio-ecological observation systems aimed at monitoring, analysing and communicating landscape transformations and landscape evolution, although the field remains characterised by conceptual fragmentation and the absence of systematised international inventories. This study addresses this gap through the development and analysis of a curated inventory of 113 landscape observatories and related initiatives, constructed from a systematic web-based search and an explicit process of data screening and coding. The research examines the territorial distribution, temporal evolution, declared objectives, methodologies, operational scales and temporal continuity of the identified initiatives through descriptive and interpretative analyses supported by the existing literature, including the role of remote sensing, spatial analysis and repeat photography. The results reveal a strong European predominance, particularly in France, and a marked concentration of initiatives operating at regional scales, temporally associated with the implementation of the European Landscape Convention. The dated subset suggests a marked expansion after 2000, although many initiatives lack explicit chronological information. The analysis also highlights substantial heterogeneity in functional orientations, distinguishing between observatories with continuous photographic monitoring, temporally limited observation systems, landscape study centres, documentary repositories and other initiatives with non-systematic uses of photography. Furthermore, the study identifies a recurrent gap between declared objectives and the explicit articulation of methodologies and temporal monitoring schemes. Overall, the paper proposes a typological synthesis of landscape observatories and related initiatives and discusses their potential role as hybrid socio-ecological monitoring systems for adaptive territorial governance. The results also highlight the need for clearer analytical frameworks and greater methodological transparency to facilitate comparison and strengthen their contribution to territorial knowledge and governance. Protrusions on the flow-passing surfaces of hydraulic machinery readily induce localized cavitation and exacerbate cavitation erosion damage. This study investigates the influence of a spherical cap protrusion on a flat wall on the collapse dynamics of cavitation bubbles. By integrating high-speed photography experiments with Kelvin impulse theory, an impulse model is constructed based on boundary treatment and potential flow superposition. The dynamic evolution characteristics of cavitation bubbles at both symmetric and asymmetric positions are systematically analyzed, with emphasis on the effects of the spherical cap angle and bubble azimuthal angle on bubble morphology evolution, bubble wall collapse velocity, and the magnitude and direction of the Kelvin impulse. The results indicate that as the spherical cap angle increases, the non-spherical collapse of bubbles at symmetric positions becomes substantially more pronounced, and the collapse mode transitions from flat wall-dominated to protrusion-dominated behavior. At asymmetric positions, a larger spherical cap angle intensifies the non-uniformity of the bubble wall collapse velocity: the minimum velocity continues to decrease, and the location of this extremum shifts toward the side adjacent to the protrusion. Meanwhile, the Kelvin impulse magnitude exhibits accelerating growth, and its direction reorients from perpendicular to the wall toward the protrusion structure. Full article

At around 8:40 a.m. on 17 July 2024, the Wanshuitian landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA) experienced a deformation failure characterized by thrust load-caused deformations and high-speed sliding. Using geological surveys and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photography, this study divided the Wanshuitian landslide area into five zones: sliding initiation (A1), secondary disintegration (A2), main accumulation (B1), right falling (B2), and left falling (B3) zones. Through monitoring data analysis and GeoStudio-based numerical simulations, this study revealed the mechanisms behind the landslide failure mode characterized by slope sliding approximately along the strike of the rock formation under the coupling effect of hydrological and geological conditions. The results indicate that factors inducing the landslide failure include the geomorphic feature of alternating grooves and ridges, the lithologic assemblage characterized by interbeds of soft and hard rocks, the slope structure with well-developed joints, and the sustained heavy rains in the preceding period. In the Wanshuitian landslide area, mudstone valleys are prone to accumulate rainwater, which can infiltrate directly into the weak interlayers of rock masses and soften the rock masses. Multi-peak rain events with a short time interval serve as a critical factor in groundwater recharge. Within 17 days preceding its failure, the Wanshuitian landslide experienced a superimposed process of heavy and secondary rain events with a short interval (four days). Rainwater from the first heavy rain event failed to completely discharge during the short interval, while the secondary rain event also caused rainwater accumulation. These led to a continuous rise in the groundwater table, a constant decrease in the shear strength of the slope, and ultimately the landslide instability. Since the landslide sliding in the dip direction of the rock formation was impeded, the main sliding direction of the landslide formed an angle of 88° with this direction. This led to a unique failure mode characterized by slope sliding approximately along the strike of the rock formation. Based on these findings, this study proposed characteristics for the early identification of the failure of similar landslides, aiming to provide a robust scientific basis for the monitoring, early warning, and prevention and control of the failure of similar landslides. To address the lack of direct experimental characterization of multi-kernel group threshing during maize ear threshing, an experimental study on maize ear group threshing was conducted based on kernel arrangement unit characteristics. By constructing a torque testing system for maize ear detachment, we analyzed the temporal variation in torque during detachment and its response to different experimental conditions. Statistical evaluation of torque variability and stability was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and error bars. Furthermore, high-speed photography was employed to capture continuous images and analyze the trajectories of kernel motion during critical detachment stages, revealing the movement characteristics and shedding behavior of kernel clusters. The results indicate that the maize ear threshing process does not involve individual kernel detachment but primarily manifests as group threshing behavior with the arrangement unit as the fundamental unit. Furthermore, the characteristics of the variation in threshing torque correspond to the collective detachment process of the kernel group. This study provides direct experimental evidence for the group threshing mechanism of maize ears through both torque statistical analysis and high-speed visualization. These findings offer valuable insights for threshing mechanism research and the optimization of threshing components. Full article

As public demand for health and well-being continues to rise, rural landscapes are increasingly valued as settings for stress reduction and psycho-physiological restoration. Drawing on five “Beautiful Villages” in Jiangning District, Nanjing (China), this study categorizes rural landscapes into three types—farmland production landscapes, rural settlement landscapes, and rural mountain–water landscapes—based on the proportional dominance of key landscape elements. Audio-visual stimuli were developed from on-site photography and field recordings to construct controlled rural audio-visual environments. Using a combination of physiological indicators and self-reported psychological assessments, we systematically compare restorative responses across modalities (visual, auditory, and audio-visual) and across landscape types, and examine how specific landscape elements relate to restorative outcomes. Results show that (1) auditory stimuli generally produce stronger restorative responses than visual stimuli, and audio-visual interactions are evident; (2) restorative benefits vary significantly across the three rural landscape types; and (3) visually natural and structurally rich elements are associated with greater restoration, while auditory cues can direct visual attention and natural sounds are positively linked to restorative outcomes. These findings advance understanding of multi-sensory restorative processes in rural landscapes and provide evidence for sustainable rural landscape planning and design by supporting healthier, more restorative, and more human-centered rural environments. Psoriasis is a heterogeneous inflammatory skin disease requiring continuous monitoring to assess treatment efficacy. Automated lesion segmentation remains a significant computer vision challenge due to irregular plaque boundaries, variable skin tones, and uncontrolled lighting conditions in clinical photography. This study proposes a robust hybrid deep learning framework for the automated segmentation of psoriatic lesions in unconstrained environments. We constructed a unique dataset utilizing a hierarchical three-class labeling scheme (psoriatic plaque, healthy skin, and background) to mitigate the class imbalance and background noise often found in binary segmentation tasks. Following a systematic hyperparameter optimization using the Optuna framework, three distinct architectures—DeepLabV3+, UperNet, and SegFormer—were identified as optimal. A novel ensemble architecture was then developed to integrate the high sensitivity of DeepLabV3+, the precision of UperNet, and the contextual balance of SegFormer via a conflict-resolution voting algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid model outperforms individual state-of-the-art architectures, achieving a Dice coefficient of 89.3% for lesion segmentation and an F1 score of 90.7% across skin classes. These findings confirm the system’s adaptability to real-world imaging conditions, validating its potential as an objective decision-support tool for dermatological practice. Full article

Background/Objectives: British trans and gender-expansive individuals face stigma and consistently experience lengthy waits for gender-enhancing interventions. Researchers are using a range of qualitative methodologies to give this marginalised community a voice. In this study the focus is on the lived experiences of British transgender men seeking medical intervention around their gender identity. The aim was to explore how psychological well-being for this group of transmen was both threatened and supported. Methods: Online semi-structured interviews using auto-photography were conducted with eleven transmen aged between 18 and 68 years. Both verbal and visual data were analysed together using interpretive phenomenological analysis. Analysis: Three themes focus on challenges and supportive strategies utilised by participants both before their decision to transition and after. All participants expressed significant mental health difficulties before commencing their transition, typically originating from childhood and continuing until they gained access to gender-affirming medical care. Their transition journeys damaged their well-being through resistance and rejection from families and communities, and difficulties navigating healthcare systems. A series of resources which significantly enhanced well-being were also reported. Unconditional acceptance and belonging found within and beyond the trans community, connecting with nature and ultimately progressing with gender-affirming healthcare were key elements in protecting and promoting well-being. Conclusions: The toll on the well-being of trans and other gender-expansive individuals is considerable and recent changes in UK law have exacerbated the hostile environment faced by TGE individuals. Community-based allyship and access to affirmative professional psychological support at all stages is vital. Full article

With the ongoing advancement of urbanization, the renewal of old urban areas has emerged as a central front in enhancing urban quality, with street space improvement playing a pivotal role in advancing sustainable urban development. This study focuses on Chengdu, a highly urbanized megacity, employing a combination of multi-point continuous street view photography, spatial mapping, and landscape design interventions to systematically examine human activity patterns, commercial dynamics, and pathways for spatial optimization along the street-facing interfaces of old residential neighborhoods and their adjacent urban streets. The findings reveal that: (1) commercializing the street-facing façades enhances local employment opportunities; (2) window-type fences demonstrate superior adaptability by effectively balancing commercial accessibility with resident safety; and (3) a diverse mix of commercial types sustains the vitality of street-level economies in these areas. These results not only offer actionable spatial strategies for the renovation of old residential zones in Chengdu but also contribute transferable insights for urban regeneration efforts globally. Background/Objectives: Topical steroid withdrawal syndrome is an underrecognized (and at times controversial) diagnosis, predominantly seen in individuals with a history of prolonged medium- to high-potency steroid use with sudden cessation. We aim to present topical steroid withdrawal clinical cases along with a narrative review of the literature to better characterize this understudied phenomenon. Methods: A total of 16 patients with a history of topical steroid withdrawal were enrolled in an IRB-approved clinical trial (NCT04864886). Participants underwent clinical assessments at the National Institutes of Health, including a history and physical examination, photography, genome sequencing, and comprehensive blood work. A follow-up survey assessed symptom activity and functional impact. Results: All patients reported severe itch, heat and photosensitivity, erythema, skin dryness, and pain. A total of 11 patients exhibited elevated IgE levels, 9 patients noted metallic-smelling skin, and 4 had peripheral blood eosinophilia. Symptomatic relief was observed with dupilumab, berberine, naltrexone, and various home remedies including topical ointments, vitamins, and probiotics, though effectiveness varied and often required trial and error. At follow-up, most respondents reported partial but ongoing symptoms, with several describing residual itch and intermittent interference with daily activities. Some participants continued therapeutic interventions, such as berberine, over two years after their initial evaluation. Conclusions: Our findings report improvement in patient symptoms such as itch and detail emerging management strategies that have not been discussed before. Improved recognition, physician consensus, and systemic evaluation of therapeutic options are needed to guide care and enhance quality of life for affected patients. Full article

Methods: Cross-sectional, multistage cluster-stratified sample technique was used to study adolescents aged 15–20 years (n = 344) from Al-Ahsa schools. Standardized extra-/intraoral photography supported Dental Esthetic Screening Index (DESI) scoring and psychosocial impact using Arabic Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ) were applied. Reliability was assessed through two-way mixed intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), Bland–Altman analysis, standard error of measurement (SEM), and minimal detectable change at the 95% confidence level (MDC95). Associations were examined using correlations and regression models. Results: The distribution of DESI categories was excellent (6.4%), good (29.7%), satisfactory (42.2%), insufficient (18.9%), and poor (2.9%). The distribution of PIDAQ impact levels was minimal (37.8%), slight (41.6%), moderate (18.0%), and significant (2.6%) (age p = 0.052; sex p = 0.417). DESI and total PIDAQ were weakly correlated (Spearman ρ = 0.248, 95% CI 0.143–0.347; p < 0.001). In a multivariable linear regression model with continuous PIDAQ total score as the outcome (R2 = 0.525; adjusted R2 = 0.516; p < 0.001), self-perceived smile dissatisfaction (B = 7.789; β = 0.478; p < 0.001) and tooth-color dissatisfaction (B = 4.099; β = 0.306; p < 0.001) showed the strongest associations with higher PIDAQ scores, while DESI total score showed a smaller association (B = 0.310; β = 0.120; p = 0.002). Age and sex were not significant predictors after adjustment. Conclusions: Objective smile esthetics were modestly associated with psychosocial impact, whereas adolescents’ self-perceived smile and tooth-color dissatisfaction were strongly associated with worse psychosocial outcomes. Although the smile esthetics may be clinically acceptable, adolescents can still experience reduced oral health-related quality of life due to the psychosocial impact of perceived dental esthetics. These findings support incorporating brief subjective questions on smile and tooth-color perception alongside objective assessment during routine adolescent dental care. Full article

Recent text-to-image AI systems have revived the long-standing fantasy of the image that appears to generate itself. Building on Chesher and Albarrán-Torres’s concept of ‘autolography’, this article situates contemporary AI-generated imagery within a longer lineage of self-generating images that extends from religious acheiropoieta (‘not made by hand’) through photography to computational image-making. Through the lens of Practice-as-Research (PaR), it positions digital photogrammetry as a knowledge ground in which the fantasy of the self-generating image continues to perform the faith structures of earlier visual cultures. Drawing on photogrammetric experiments originating within Lisbon’s Church of São Domingos in 2018, this article examines unexpected artifacts—ghosts, smears, and fragmentations—that emerge from movement, and reveal the body of the researcher in the centre. It argues that such digital ‘miracle’ images function as contingent, embodied events, and renders visible the labour, presence, and gestures typically erased by automated systems. It playfully proposes the ‘cheiropoieton’ (‘made by hand’) as an embodied counter-ethics to autolography, insisting on friction, care, and accountability in contemporary image-making. Full article

The external spatial form and skyline of high-density waterfront iconic building clusters in super-large cities are the most distinctive features of urban image. However, traditional static research methods (such as fixed-point photography) cannot capture the continuous visual experience of people in motion, thereby imposing obvious limitations. This study proposes a dynamic visual quantification method that constructs a linear observation path using the parametric platform Grasshopper. The method calculates two core parameters in real-time: the vertical perspective angle (θ, reflecting the building’s “sense of height”) and the horizontal perspective angle (β, reflecting the “sense of density” of the building cluster), so as to realize the dynamic and continuous quantification of the building cluster’s form. Using Shanghai Lujiazui as a case study, this paper validates the method’s effectiveness. The results show that the visual perception of buildings is not only determined by their absolute height but also influenced by the distance from the observation point and spatial relationships. Furthermore, through variance analysis and an annealing algorithm, this study can identify “visually stable points” (suitable for arranging core landmarks) and “optimal viewing points” (suitable for setting up urban viewing platforms). This method provides a reproducible quantitative tool and specific guidance for the optimization of waterfront building layouts and the planning of urban viewing platforms. Full article

This study proposes a “zonal inversion–fusion mosaicking” technical framework to address the challenge of acquiring continuous full-profile topography data in coastal wetland intertidal zones. The framework integrates and synergistically analyzes data from multi-platform sensors, including satellite, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and ground-based instruments. Applied to the Min River Estuary wetland, this framework employs zone-specific optimization strategies: in the inundated zone, the topography was inverted using Landsat-9 OLI imagery and a Random Forest algorithm (R2 = 0.79, RMSE = 2.08 m); in the bare flat zone, a linear model was developed based on Sentinel-2 time-series imagery using the inundation frequency method, and it achieved an accuracy of R2 = 0.86 and RMSE = 0.34 m; and in the vegetated zone, high-precision topography was derived from UAV oblique photography with Kriging interpolation (RMSE = 0.10 m). The key innovation is the successful generation of a seamless full-profile digital elevation model (DEM) with an overall RMSE of 0.54 m through benchmark unification and precision-weighted fusion algorithms from the sensor data fusion perspective. This study demonstrates that the synergistic sensors framework effectively overcomes the limitations of single-sensor observations, providing a reliable and generalizable integrated solution for the full-profile topographic monitoring of tidal flats, which offers crucial support for coastal wetland research and management.
