The artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L. subsp. scolymus) is an endemic perennial plant of the Mediterranean area commonly consumed as food. It is known since ancient times for its beneficial properties for human health, among which its antioxidant activity due to polyphenolics stands out. In the frame of our ongoing studies aiming to highlight the biodiversity and the chemodiversity of natural resources, we investigated the phenolic and saponin content of the cultivar “Carciofo di Procida” collected at Procida, an island of the Gulf of Naples (Italy). Along with the edible part of the immature flower, we included in our analyses the stem and the external bracts, generally discarded for food consuming or industrial preparations. The LCMS quali-quantitative profiling of polyphenols (including anthocyanins) and cynarasaponins of this cultivar is reported for the first time. In addition to antioxidant properties, we observed a significant cytotoxic activity due to extracts from external bracts against human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cell lines with 43% of cell viability, after 24 h from the treatment (50 μg/mL), and less potent but appreciable effects also against human colorectal adenocarcinoma CaCo-2 cells. This suggests that the different metabolite composition may be responsible for the bioactivity of extracts obtained from specific parts of artichoke and foresees a possible exploitation of the discarded material as a source of beneficial compounds. Examining the Relationship Between Increased Vegetable Consumption and Lifestyle Characteristics Among School-Aged Children: A Descriptive Study

The purpose of this study was to examine vegetable consumption and its relationship with lifestyle characteristics among children and adolescents. Data from a health survey administered to a representative sample of 177,091 schoolchildren between the ages of 8 and 17 were employed in this observational, cross-sectional investigation. Physical activity level, screen time, and sleeping patterns were assessed using self-completed questionnaires. Vegetable consumption and dietary habits were analyzed using the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index for Children and Adolescents. Participants consuming vegetables more than once daily were categorized as consumers vs. non-consumers. Physical education teachers measured anthropometric and physical fitness factors. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression analysis were conducted, and the odds ratio with the corresponding 95% confidence interval was calculated and adjusted for confounders. Vegetables were consumed once or more times a day by more females than males (25.5% vs. 24.0%, p < 0.001). In both sexes, vegetable consumers slept more, ate healthier, spent less time on screens, and had better anthropometric and aerobic fitness measurements than non-consumers. Healthy eating practices, such as regularly consuming fruits, legumes, nuts, and dairy products, were strongly correlated with vegetable intake. For every one-year increase in age, the odds of being a vegetable consumer decreased by 8% and 10% in boys and girls, respectively. Overweight/obese participants had lower odds of being a vegetable consumer by 20%. Increased screen time, inadequate physical activity, and insufficient sleeping hours decreased the odds of being a vegetable consumer by 22%, 30%, and 25%, respectively (all p-values < 0.001). Overall, a healthier lifestyle profile was associated with higher vegetable intake for both sexes among children and adolescents. Full article

Aging in wooden barrels is a proven technique that enhances the sensory complexity of alcoholic beverages by promoting the extraction of volatile and phenolic compounds. While oak has been traditionally used, there is a growing interest in exploring alternative wood species that can impart distinct sensory characteristics and promote innovative maturation processes. This review examines the impact of alternative woods on the aging of beverages, such as wine, cachaça, tequila, and beer, focusing on their influence on aroma, flavor, color, and chemical composition. A bibliometric analysis highlights the increasing scientific attention toward wood diversification and emerging aging technologies, including ultrasound and micro-oxygenation, which accelerate maturation while preserving sensory complexity. The role of toasting techniques in modulating the release of phenolic and volatile compounds is also discussed, emphasizing their contribution to unique sensory profiles. Additionally, regulatory aspects and sustainability considerations are explored, suggesting that alternative woods can expand flavor possibilities while supporting environmentally sustainable practices. This review underscores the potential of non-traditional wood species to drive innovation in the aging of alcoholic beverages and provide new sensory experiences that align with evolving consumer preferences and market trends. Background/Objectives: Cognitive impairment is one of the most common and debilitating clinical features of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Neuropsychological assessment, however, is time-consuming and requires personal resources, so, due to limited resources in daily clinical practice, information on cognitive profiles is often lacking, despite its high prognostic relevance. Time-saving and effective tools are required to bridge this gap. This study evaluates the sensitivity and specificity of a revised version of TRACK-MS (TRACK-MS-R), a recently published screening tool to identify cognitive impairment in MS in a fast and reliable way, offering a balance between efficiency and diagnostic yield for the individual patient. Methods: In this prospective cross-sectional study, 102 MS patients and 94 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HC) completed an extensive neuropsychological assessment, including TRACK-MS-R, to test for cognitive processing speed (Symbol Digit Modalities Test, SDMT) and verbal fluency (Regensburger Word Fluency Test, RWT). Sensitivity of TRACK-MS-R was assessed by using the BICAMS-M battery as a reference, and specificity was determined by comparing MS patients to HC. Results: TRACK-MS-R demonstrated high sensitivity (97.44%) when compared to the gold standard as represented by BICAMS-M for early and accurately detecting cognitive impairment in MS patients. Additionally, as a potential cognitive marker, TRACK-MS-R showed a specificity of 82.98% in distinguishing MS patients from healthy controls. Conclusions: TRACK-MS-R proves to be a highly sensitive and time-efficient screening tool for detecting cognitive impairment in patients with MS, while demonstrating good specificity compared to HC. Whereas high sensitivity is a prerequisite for a valid screening tool, its relatively modest specificity compared to BICAMS-M (62.9%) calls for caution in interpreting standalone results but instead indicates more extensive neuropsychological testing. Its briefness and diagnostic accuracy support its implementation in routine clinical practice, particularly in time-constrained settings. Full article

Bisphenol A (BPA), a prevalent endocrine-disrupting chemical, is widely found in various consumer products and poses significant health risks, particularly through hormone receptor interactions, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction. BPA exposure is associated with reproductive, metabolic, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Melatonin, a neurohormone with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, has emerged as a potential therapeutic agent to counteract the toxic effects of BPA. This review consolidates recent findings from in vitro and animal/preclinical studies, highlighting melatonin’s protective mechanisms against BPA-induced toxicity. These include its capacity to reduce oxidative stress, restore mitochondrial function, modulate inflammatory responses, and protect against DNA damage. In animal models, melatonin also mitigates reproductive toxicity, enhances fertility parameters, and reduces histopathological damage. Melatonin’s ability to regulate endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and cell death pathways underscores its multifaceted protective role. Despite promising preclinical results, human clinical trials are needed to validate these findings and establish optimal dosages, treatment durations, and safety profiles. This review discusses the wide range of potential uses of melatonin for treating BPA toxicity and suggests directions for future research. Full article

Pork is a major global source of animal protein, and improving both its production efficiency and meat quality is a central goal in modern animal agriculture and food systems. This study investigated post-inflection-point growth patterns in two genetically distinct pig breeds—the lean-type Yorkshire pig (YP) and the fatty-type Qingyu pig (QYP)—with the aim of elucidating breed-specific characteristics that influence pork quality and yield. Comprehensive evaluations of carcass traits, meat quality attributes, nutritional composition, and gene expression profiles were conducted. After the growth inflection point, carcass traits exhibited greater variability than meat quality traits in both breeds, though with distinct patterns. YPs displayed superior muscle development, with the longissimus muscle area (LMA) increasing rapidly before plateauing at ~130 kg, whereas QYPs maintained more gradual but sustained muscle growth. In contrast, intramuscular fat (IMF)—a key determinant of meat flavor and texture—accumulated faster in YPs post inflection but plateaued earlier in QYPs. Correlation and clustering analyses revealed more synchronized regulation of meat quality traits in QYPs, while YPs showed greater trait variability. Gene expression patterns aligned with these phenotypic trends, highlighting distinct regulatory mechanisms for muscle and fat development in each breed. In addition, based on the growth curves, we calculated the peak age at which the growth rate declined in lean-type and fat-type pigs, which was approximately 200 days for YPs and around 270 days for QYPs. This suggests that these ages may represent the optimal slaughter times for the respective breeds, balancing both economic efficiency and meat quality. These findings provide valuable insights for enhancing pork quality through precision management and offer theoretical guidance for developing breed-specific feeding strategies, slaughter timing, and value-added pork production tailored to consumer preferences in the modern food market. Chrysanthemum × morifolium (Ramat) Hemsl. (Hangbaiju), which has been widely consumed as a herbal tea for over 3000 years, is renowned for its biosafety and diverse bioactivities. This study investigates the impact of polyphenol-rich Hangbaiju extracts (HE) on high-fat diet-induced obesity in mice. HE contains phenolic acids and flavonoids with anti-obesity properties, such as apigenin, luteolin-7-glucoside, apigenin-7-O-glucoside, kaempferol 3-(6″-acetylglucoside), etc. To establish the obesity model, mice were randomly assigned into four groups (n = 8 per group) and administered with either HE or water for 42 days under high-fat or low-fat dietary conditions. Administration of low (LH) and high (HH) doses of HE both significantly suppressed body weight growth (by 16.28% and 16.24%, respectively) and adipose tissue enlargement in obese mice. HE significantly improved the serum lipid profiles, mainly manifested as decreased levels of triglycerides (28.19% in LH and 19.59% in HH) and increased levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (44.34% in LH and 54.88% in HH), and further attenuated liver lipid deposition. Furthermore, HE significantly decreased the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio 0.23-fold (LH) and 0.12-fold (HH), indicating an improvement in the microecological balance of the gut. HE administration also elevated the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria (e.g., Allobaculum, norank_f__Muribaculaceae), while suppressing harmful pathogenic proliferation (e.g., Dubosiella, Romboutsia). In conclusion, HE ameliorates obesity and hyperlipidemia through modulating lipid metabolism and restoring the balance of intestinal microecology, thus being promising for obesity therapy. Fistulina hepatica (Schaeff.) With. and Clitocybe nuda (Bull.) H.E. Bigelow & A.H. Sm. are wild edible mushrooms with nutritional and functional potential that remain insufficiently characterized. This study provides the first comparative assessment of their nutritional profiles, phenolic composition, and antioxidant activity, using specimens collected from Montesinho Natural Park (Portugal). Proximate composition, organic and phenolic acids, free sugars, and fatty acids were analyzed by chromatographic methods, and antioxidant capacity was assessed through OxHLIA and TBARS assays. F. hepatica showed higher carbohydrates (9.3 ± 0.2 g/100 g fw) and estimated energy values (43 ± 1 kcal/100 g fw), increased phenolic acids content (2.7 ± 0.1 mg/g extract), and the exclusive presence of p-coumaric and cinnamic acids, along with OxHLIA activity (IC50 = 126 ± 5 µg/mL at Δt = 60 min). C. nuda displayed higher protein (2.5 ± 0.1 g/100 g dw) and quinic acid contents (4.13 ± 0.02 mg/g extract), a PUFA-rich profile, and greater TBARS inhibition (EC50 = 303 ± 17 µg/mL). These findings highlight distinct and complementary bioactive traits, supporting their valorization as natural functional ingredients. Their compositional features offer promising applications in sustainable food systems and nutraceutical development, encouraging further investigations into safety, bioaccessibility, and formulation strategies. Notably, F. hepatica is best consumed at a young developmental stage, as its sensory properties tend to decline with maturity. Full article

Consumer interest in vegetarian, ethical, and clean-label foods is reviving the use of plant-derived milk coagulants. Cardosins from Cynara cardunculus (“thistle”) are aspartic proteases with strong clotting activity, yet their technological impact in cheese remains under-explored. This study compared a commercial thistle extract (PC) with traditional bovine rennet rich in chymosin (AC) during manufacture and 60-day ripening of Caciotta cheese. Classical compositional assays (ripening index, texture profile, color, solubility) were integrated with scanning electron microscopy, three-dimensional surface reconstruction, and descriptive sensory analysis. AC cheeses displayed slower but sustained proteolysis, yielding a higher and more linear ripening index, softer body, greater solubility, and brighter, more yellow appearance. Imaging revealed a continuous protein matrix with uniformly distributed, larger pores, consistent with a dairy-like sensory profile dominated by milky and umami notes. Conversely, PC cheeses underwent rapid early proteolysis that plateaued, producing firmer, chewier curds with lower solubility and darker color. Micrographs showed a fragmented matrix with smaller, heterogeneous pores; sensory evaluation highlighted vegetal, bitter, and astringent attributes. The data demonstrate that thistle coagulant can successfully replace animal rennet but generates cheeses with distinct structural and sensory fingerprints. The optimization of process parameters is therefore required when targeting specific product styles. Full article

The abrasion resistance of fabrics is one of the basic properties determining the utility performance and durability. The abrasion resistance of textile materials is measured using the Martindale device according to appropriate standards. The sample breakage method is the most commonly used of the three methods. The method is based on organoleptic assessment of fabric breakage. The method is time-consuming, and results may be subject to error resulting from the subjective nature of the assessment. The aim of the presented work was to check the possibility of the application of contactless 3D surface geometry measurement using an optical profilometer in an assessment of changes in fabrics’ surface due to the abrasion process. The obtained results confirmed that some parameters of the geometric structure of fabric surfaces, such as the highest height of the roughness profile Rz, the height of the highest pick of the roughness profile Rp, the depth of the lowest valley of the roughness profile Rv, the depth of the total height of the roughness profile Rt, and the kurtosis Rku, can be used to assess the abrasion resistance of fabrics. It is also stated that using the non-contact optical measurement of fabric surface geometry allows for an assessment of the directionality of surface texture. For this purpose, the autocorrelation function and angle distribution function can be applied. Full article

Background: Low-glycemic index (GI) carbohydrates like isomaltulose (ISO) are known to enhance incretin release and to improve postprandial glucose control at the following meal (an effect known as second meal effect, or SME), which is particularly beneficial for individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study aimed to assess the most effective preprandial interval of ISO- or saccharose (SUC) snacks (1 h vs. 3 h preload) to enhance prandial incretin responses to a subsequent meal. Methods: In a randomized crossover design, 15 participants with MetS completed four experimental conditions on four non-consecutive days, combining two preload types (ISO or SUC) and two preload timings (Intervention A: 3 h preload; Intervention B: 1 h preload). Specifically, the four conditions were (1) ISO + Intervention A, (2) SUC + Intervention A, (3) ISO + Intervention B, and (4) SUC + Intervention B. The order of conditions was randomized and separated by a 3–7-day washout period to minimize carryover effects. On each study day, participants consumed two mixed meal tests (MMT-1 and MMT-2) with a standardized preload (50 g ISO or SUC) administered either 3 h or 1 h prior to MMT-2. Blood samples were collected over 9 h at 15 predefined time points for analysis of glucose, insulin, C-peptide, and incretin hormones (GLP-1, GIP, and PYY). Results: The unique digestion profile of ISO resulted in a blunted glucose ascent rate (ΔG/Δt: 0.28 vs. 0.53 mmol/L/min for SUC, p < 0.01), paralleled by synonyms PYY elevation over 540 min monitoring, compared with SUC. ISO also led to higher and more sustained GLP-1 and PYY levels, while SUC induced a stronger GIP response. Notably, the timing of ISO consumption significantly influenced PYY secretion, with the 3 h preload showing enhanced PYY responses and a more favorable SME compared to the 1 h preload. Conclusions: ISO, particularly when consumed 3 h before a meal (vs. 1 h), offers significant advantages over SUC by elevating PYY levels, blunting the glucose ascent rate, and sustaining GLP-1 release. This synergy enhances the second meal effect, suggesting ISO’s potential for managing postprandial glycemic excursions in MetS. Full article

Gas sensors are considered a highly effective non-destructive technique for monitoring the quality and safety of food materials. These intelligent sensors can detect volatile profiles emitted by food products, providing valuable information on the changes occurring within the food. Gas sensors have garnered significant interest for their numerous advantages in the development of food safety monitoring systems. The adaptable characteristics of gas sensors make them ideal for integration into production lines, while the flexibility of certain sensor types allows for incorporation into packaging materials. Various types of gas sensors have been developed for their distinct properties and are utilized in a wide range of applications. Metal-oxide semiconductors and optical sensors are widely studied for their potential use as gas sensors in food quality assessments due to their ability to provide visual indicators to consumers. The advancement of new nanomaterials and their integration with advanced data acquisition techniques is expected to enhance the performance and utility of sensors in sustainable practices within the food supply chain. Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a prevalent gastrointestinal malignancy, ranking third in incidence and second in cancer-related mortality. Despite therapeutic advances, challenges such as chemotherapy toxicity and drug resistance persist. Thus, there is an urgent need for novel CRC treatments. However, developing new drugs is time-consuming and resource-intensive. As a more efficient approach, drug repurposing offers a promising alternative for discovering new therapies. Methods: In this study, we screened 1068 small molecular compounds from an FDA-approved drug library in CRC cells. Menadione was selected for further study based on its activity profile. Mechanistic analysis included a cell death pathway PCR array, differential gene expression, enrichment, and network analysis. Gene expressions were validated by RT-qPCR. Results: We identified menadione as a potent anti-tumor drug. Menadione induced three programmed cell death (PCD) signaling pathways: necroptosis, apoptosis, and autophagy. Furthermore, we found that the anti-tumor effect induced by menadione in CRC cells was mediated through a key gene: MAPK8. Conclusions: By employing methods of cell biology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics, we conclude that menadione can induce multiple forms of PCD in CRC cells by activating MAPK8, providing a foundation for repurposing the “new use” of the “old drug” menadione in CRC treatment. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are highly volatile chemicals in natural and anthropogenic environments, significantly affecting indoor air quality. Major sources of indoor VOCs include emissions from building materials, furnishings, and consumer products. Natural wood products release VOCs, including terpenes and aldehydes, which exert diverse health effects ranging from mild respiratory irritation to severe outcomes, such as formaldehyde-induced carcinogenicity. The temporal dynamics of VOC emissions were investigated, and the toxicological and physiological effects of the VOCs emitted by two types of natural wood, Korean Red Pine (Pinus densiflora) and Japanese Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa), were evaluated. Using female C57BL/6 mice as an animal model, the exposure setups included phytoncides, formaldehyde, and intact wood samples over short- and long-term durations. The exposure effects were assessed using oxidative stress markers, antioxidant enzyme activity, hepatic and renal biomarkers, and inflammatory cytokine profiles. Long-term exposure to Korean Red Pine and Japanese Cypress wood VOCs did not induce significant pathological changes. Japanese Cypress exhibited more distinct benefits, including enhanced oxidative stress mitigation, reduced systemic toxicity, and lower pro-inflammatory cytokine levels compared to the negative control group, attributable to its more favorable VOC emission profile. These findings highlight the potential health and environmental benefits of natural wood VOCs and offer valuable insights for optimizing timber use, improving indoor air quality, and informing public health policies. One concern in the yearly re-formulation of influenza vaccines is the time-consuming manufacturing of vaccine potency reagents, particularly for emergency responses. The continuous evaluation of modern techniques such as reversed-phase (RP) chromatography is an asset for streamlining this process. One challenge with RP methods, however, is the need to re-optimize methods for antigens that show poor separation, which can be highly dependent on analyst experience and available data. In this study, we leveraged a large RP dataset of influenza antigens to explore machine learning (ML) approaches of classifying challenging separations for computer-assisted method re-optimization across years, products, and analysts. Methods: To address recurring chromatographic issues—such as poor resolution, strain co-elution, and signal absence—we applied data augmentation techniques to correct class imbalance and trained multiple supervised ML classifiers to distinguish between these peak profiles. Results: With data augmentation, several ML models demonstrated promising accuracy in classifying chromatographic profiles according to the provided labels. These models effectively distinguished patterns indicative of separation issues in real-world data. Conclusions Our findings highlight the potential of ML as a computer assisted tool in the evaluation of vaccine quality, offering a scalable and objective approach to chromatogram classification. By reducing reliance on manual interpretation, ML can expedite the optimization of analytical methods, which is particularly needed for rapid responses. Future research involving larger, inter-laboratory datasets will further elucidate the utility of ML in vaccine analysis. Full article
