A Comparative Evaluation of Polymer-Modified Rapid-Set Calcium Sulfoaluminate Concrete: Bridging the Gap Between Laboratory Shrinkage and the Field Strain Performance

Rapid pavement repair demands materials that combine accelerated strength gains, dimensional stability, long-term durability, and sustainability. However, finding materials or formulations that offer these balances remains a critical challenge. This study systematically evaluates two polymer-modified belitic calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) concretes—CSAP (powdered polymer) and CSA-LLP (liquid polymer admixture)—against a traditional Type III Portland cement (OPC) control under both laboratory and realistic outdoor conditions. Laboratory specimens were tested for fresh properties, early-age and later-age compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strengths, as well as drying shrinkage according to ASTM standards. Outdoor 5 × 4 × 12-inch slabs mimicking typical jointed plain concrete panels (JPCPs), instrumented with vibrating wire strain gauges and thermocouples, recorded the strain and temperature at 5 min intervals over 16 weeks, with 24 h wet-burlap curing to replicate field practices. Laboratory findings show that CSA mixes exceeded 3200 psi of compressive strength at 4 h, but cold outdoor casting (~48 °F) delayed the early-age strength development. The CSA-LLP exhibited the lowest drying shrinkage (0.036% at 16 weeks), and outdoor CSA slabs captured the initial ettringite-driven expansion, resulting in a net expansion (+200 µε) rather than contraction. Approximately 80% of the total strain evolved within the first 48 h, driven by autogenous and plastic effects. CSA mixes generated lower peak internal temperatures and reduced thermal strain amplitudes compared to the OPC, improving dimensional stability and mitigating restraint-induced cracking. These results underscore the necessity of field validation for shrinkage compensation mechanisms and highlight the critical roles of the polymer type and curing protocol in optimizing CSA-based repairs for durable, low-carbon pavement rehabilitation. This study investigates the bond behavior of fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites with three common masonry substrates—solid clay bricks (SBs), perforated bricks (PBs), and concrete hollow blocks (HBs)—using knitted polyester grille (KPG) fabric. Through uniaxial tensile tests of the KPG fabric and FRCM system, along with single-lap and double-lap shear tests, the interfacial debonding modes, load-slip responses, and composite utilization ratio were evaluated. Key findings reveal that (i) SB and HB substrates predominantly exhibited fabric slippage (FS) or matrix–fabric (MF) debonding, while PB substrates consistently failed at the matrix–substrate (MS) interface, due to their smooth surface texture. (ii) Prism specimens with mortar joints showed enhanced interfacial friction, leading to higher load fluctuations compared to brick units. PB substrates demonstrated the lowest peak stress (69.64–74.33 MPa), while SB and HB achieved comparable peak stresses (133.91–155.95 MPa). (iii) The FRCM system only achieved a utilization rate of 12–30% in fabric and reinforcement systems. The debonding failure at the matrix–substrate interface is one of the reasons that cannot be ignored, and exploring methods to improve the bonding performance between the matrix–substrate interface is the next research direction. HB bricks have excellent bonding properties, and it is recommended to prioritize their use in retrofit applications, followed by SB bricks. These findings provide insights into optimizing the application of FRCM reinforcement systems in masonry structures. Full article

The shear tests are conducted on six precast segmental concrete beams (PSCBs) in this paper. A new specimen design scheme is presented to compare the effects of segmental joints on the shear performance of PSCBs. The failure modes, shear strength, structural deflection, stirrup strain, and tendon stress are recorded. The factors of shear span ratio, the position of segmental joints, and hybrid tendon ratio are focused on, and their effects on the shear behaviors are compared. Based on the measured responses, the shear contribution proportions of concrete segments, prestressed tendons, and stirrups are decomposed and quantified. With the observed failure modes, the truss–arch model is employed to clarify the shear mechanism of PSCBs, and simplified equations are further developed for predicting the shear strength. Using the collected test results of 30 specimens, the validity of the proposed equations is verified with a mean ratio of calculated-to-test values of 0.96 and a standard deviation of 0.11. Furthermore, the influence mechanism of shear span ratio, segmental joints, prestressing force, and hybrid tendon ratio on the shear strength is clarified. The increasing shear span ratio decreases the inclined angle of the arch ribs, thereby reducing the shear resistance contribution of the arch action. The open joints reduce the number of stirrups passing through the diagonal cracks, lowering the shear contribution of the truss action. The prestressing force can reduce the inclination of diagonal cracks, improving the contribution of truss action. The external unbonded tendon will decrease the height of the arch rib due to the second-order effects, causing lower shear strength than PSCBs with internal tendons. Full article

The performance of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures will gradually decrease over time, posing a threat to the safety of buildings. Although the performance of some buildings may still meet the safety requirements, they cannot meet new usage requirements. Therefore, this paper proposes a new-type joint to promote the development of research on the reinforcement and renovation of RC frame structures in response to this situation. The RC beams and columns of the joints are connected by embedded horizontal steel plate (a single plate with dimension of 150 mm × 200 mm × 5 mm), and the beams and columns are individually wrapped in steel. Through conducting low cyclic loading tests, this paper analyzes the influence of carrying out wrapped steel treatment and the thickness of wrapped steel of the beam and connector on mechanical performance indicators such as hysteresis curve, skeleton curve, stiffness, ductility, and energy dissipation. The experimental results indicate that the reinforcement using steel plate can significantly improve the dynamic performance of the joint. The effect of changing the thickness of the connector on the dynamic performance of the specimen is not significant, while increasing the thickness of wrapped steel of beam can effectively improve the overall strength of joint. The research results of this paper will help promote the application of reinforcement and renovation technology for existing buildings, and improve the quality of human living. Full article

Fatigue damage in steel–concrete composite structures frequently initiates at welded joints due to stress concentrations and inherent defects. This study investigates the stress intensity factors (SIFs) associated with fatigue cracks in the welds of steel longitudinal beams, employing the FRANC3D–ABAQUS interactive technique. A finite element model was developed and validated against experimental data, followed by the insertion of cracks at both the weld root and weld toe. The influences of stud spacing, initial crack size, crack shape, and lack-of-penetration defects on Mode I SIFs were systematically analyzed. Results show that both weld root and weld toe cracks are predominantly Mode I in nature, with the toe cracks exhibiting higher SIF values. Increasing the stud spacing, crack depth, or crack aspect ratio significantly raises the SIFs. Lack of penetration defects further amplifies the SIFs, especially at the weld root. Based on the computed SIFs, fatigue life predictions were conducted using a crack propagation approach. These findings highlight the critical roles of crack geometry and welding quality in fatigue performance, providing a numerical foundation for optimizing welded joint design in composite structures. This current review examines modeling approaches for renovating reinforced concrete (RC) buildings for vertical forest (VF) application, taking into account structural retrofitting, energy systems, forestry integration, and occupant comfort. The study assesses research conducted with an advanced 3D finite element analysis and the use of retrofitting modeling techniques, including textile-reinforced mortar (TRM), fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP), seismic joints, and green concrete applications. The energy system modeling methods are reviewed, taking into account the complexity of incorporating vegetation and seasonal variations. During forestry integration, three main design parameters are identified, namely, root systems, trunks, and crowns, for their critical role in the structural stability and optimal environmental performance. The comfort models are identified evolving from static to adaptive models incorporating thermal, acoustic, visual and air quality parameters. The current review consists of more than one hundred studies indicating that the integration of natural systems to buildings requires a multidimensional and multidisciplinary approach with sophisticated systems. The findings of this review provide the basis for implementing VF models to RC buildings, while highlighting areas requiring further research and validation. Full article

The European Health Technology Assessment (HTA) regulation (HTAR) came into effect in January 2025 and impacts the HTA process in all European Member States. Member States must give due consideration to the joint clinical assessment (JCA) report. This may require adaptations at the national level. This paper describes the anticipated changes to the Dutch national HTA process and how the Dutch National Health Care Institute (Zorginstituut Nederland, ZIN) prepared for this, because sharing experience between Member States can be of general interest for future expansion of the EU HTAR. ZIN’s implementation activities were facilitated by a project-governance structure and by a continuous gap analysis of the current national assessment and appraisal process of medicinal products, resulting in a concrete action plan. The implementation of the HTAR has two major implications for ZIN’s HTA process, namely that the scoping phase starts much earlier and that the JCA report is the starting point for the national assessment. Gaps, challenges and issues were identified in the categories: information and knowledge, IT and template, communication and stakeholder engagement, capacity and resources, and financial aspects. Based on a thorough and well-defined implementation plan, ZIN is ready to implement the HTAR in national HTA processes and to take on (co-)assessor roles for JCA of medicinal products in 2025. This paper presents a formulation for the dynamic analysis of dam–reservoir–foundation systems, employing a coupled finite element model that integrates displacements and reservoir pressures. An innovative coupled approach, without separating the solid and fluid equations, is proposed to directly solve the single non-symmetrical governing equation for the whole system with non-proportional damping. For the modal analysis, a state–space method is adopted to solve the coupled eigenproblem, and complex eigenvalues and eigenvectors are computed, corresponding to non-stationary vibration modes. For the seismic analysis, a time-stepping method is applied to the coupled dynamic equation, and the stress–transfer method is introduced to simulate the nonlinear behavior, innovatively combining a constitutive joint model and a concrete damage model with softening and two independent scalar damage variables (tension and compression). This formulation is implemented in the computer program DamDySSA5.0, developed by the authors. To validate the formulation, this paper provides the experimental and numerical results in the case of the Cahora Bassa dam, instrumented in 2010 with a continuous vibration monitoring system designed by the authors. The good comparison achieved between the monitoring data and the dam–reservoir–foundation model shows that the formulation is suitable for simulating the modal response (natural frequencies and mode shapes) for different reservoir water levels and the seismic response under low-intensity earthquakes, using accelerograms measured at the dam base as input. Additionally, the dam’s nonlinear seismic response is simulated under an artificial accelerogram of increasing intensity, showing the structural effects due to vertical joint movements (release of arch tensions near the crest) and the concrete damage evolution. This study investigates two novel prefabricated frame joints: prestressed steel sleeve-connected prefabricated reinforced concrete joints (PSFRC) and non-prestressed steel sleeve-connected prefabricated reinforced concrete joints (SSFRC). A total of three PSFRC specimens, four SSFRC specimens, and one cast-in-place joint were designed and fabricated. Seismic performance tests were conducted using different end-plate thicknesses, grout strengths, stiffener configurations, and prestressing tendon configurations. The experimental results showed that all specimens experienced beam end failures, and three failure modes occurred: (1) failure of the end plate of the beam sleeve, (2) failure of the variable cross-section of the prefabricated beam, and (3) failure of prefabricated beams at the connection with the steel sleeves. The load-bearing capacity and initial stiffness of the structure are increased by 35.41% and 32.64%, respectively, by increasing the thickness of the end plate. Specimens utilizing C80 grout exhibited a 39.05% higher load capacity than those with lower-grade materials. Adding stiffening ribs improved the initial stiffness substantially. Specimen XF2 had 219.08% higher initial stiffness than XF1, confirming the efficacy of stiffeners in enhancing joint rigidity. The configuration of the prestressed tendons significantly influenced the load-bearing capacity. Specimen YL2 with symmetrical double tendon bundles demonstrated a 27.27% higher ultimate load capacity than specimen YL1 with single centrally placed tendon bundles. An analytical model to calculate the moment–rotation relationship was established following the evaluation criteria specified in Eurocode 3. The results demonstrated a good agreement, providing empirical references for practical engineering applications. Full article

The shear strength of rock discontinuities is a critical parameter in rock engineering projects for assessing the safety conditions of rock slopes or concrete dam foundations. It is primarily controlled by the frictional contribution of rock texture (basic friction angle), the roughness of discontinuities, and the applied normal stress. While proper testing is essential for accurately quantifying shear strength, engineering geologists and engineers often rely on published historical databases during early design stages or when test results show significant variability. This paper serves two main objectives. First, it intends to provide a comprehensive overview of the basic friction angle concept from early years until its emergence in the Barton criterion, along with insights into distinctions and misunderstandings between basic and residual friction angles. The other, given the influence of the basic friction angle for the entire rock joint shear strength, the manuscript offers an extended database of basic friction angle values. Full article

Due to the long operation period of Beijing Metro Line 2 and the complex surrounding building environment, this paper comprehensively studied the mechanical properties of new tunnels using close-fitting undercrossing based on pre-support technology. To control structural deformation caused by the expansion project, methods such as laboratory tests, numerical simulation, and field tests were adopted to systematically analyze the tunnel mechanics during the undercrossing of existing metro lines. First, field tests were carried out on the existing Line 2 and Line 3 tunnels during the construction period. It was found that the close-fitting construction based on pre-support technology caused small deformation displacement in the subway tunnels, with little impact on the smoothness of the existing subway rail surface. The fluctuation range was −1 to 1 mm, ensuring the safety of existing subway operations. Then, a refined finite difference model for the close-fitting undercrossing construction process based on pre-support technology was established, and a series of field and laboratory tests were conducted to obtain calculation parameters. The reliability of the numerical model was verified by comparing the monitored deformation of existing structures with the simulated structural forces and deformations. The influence of construction methods on the settlement changes of existing line tracks, structures, and deformation joints was discussed. The research results show that this construction method effectively controls the settlement deformation of existing lines. The settlement deformation of existing lines is controlled within 1~3 cm. The deformation stress of the existing lines is within the concrete strength range of the existing structure, and the tensile stress is less than 3 MPa. The maximum settlement and maximum tensile stress of the station in the pre-support jacking scheme are −5.27 mm and 2.29 MPa. The construction scheme with pre-support can more significantly control structural deformation, reduce stress variations in existing line structures, and minimize damage to concrete structures. Based on the monitoring data and simulation results, some optimization measures were proposed. Full article

This paper outlines a structural qualification process to assess the use of newly developed high-modulus (HM) glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars with headed ends in the joint between concrete bridge barriers and decks. The main goals of the study are to evaluate the structural performance of GFRP-reinforced TL-5 barrier–deck systems under transverse loading and to determine the pullout capacity of GFRP anchorage systems for both new construction and retrofit applications. The research is divided into two phases. In the first phase, six full-scale Test-Level 5 (TL-5) barrier wall–deck specimens, divided into three systems, were constructed and tested up to failure. The first system used headed-end GFRP bars to connect the barrier wall to a non-deformable thick deck slab. The second system was similar to the first but had a deck slab overhang for improved anchorage. The third system utilized postinstalled GFRP bars in a non-deformable thick deck slab, bonded with a commercial epoxy adhesive as a solution for deteriorated barrier replacement. The second phase involves an experimental program to evaluate the pullout strength of the GFRP bar anchorage in normal-strength concrete. The experimental results from the tested specimens were then compared to the factored applied moments in existing literature based on traffic loads in the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. Experimental results confirmed that GFRP-reinforced TL-5 barrier–deck systems exceeded factored design moments, with capacity-to-demand ratios above 1.38 (above 1.17 with the inclusion of an environmental reduction factor of 0.85). A 195 mm embedment length proved sufficient for both pre- and postinstalled bars. Headed-end GFRP bars improved pullout strength compared to straight-end bars, especially when bonded. Failure modes occurred at high loads, demonstrating structural integrity. Postinstalled bars bonded with epoxy performed comparably to preinstalled bars. A design equation for the barrier resistance due to a diagonal concrete crack at the barrier–deck corner was developed and validated using experimental findings. This equation offers a conservative and safe design approach for evaluating barrier–deck anchorage. Full article

Cylindrical retaining structures are widely adopted in intercity railway tunnel engineering due to their exceptional load-bearing performance, no need for internal support, and efficient utilization of concrete compressive strength. Measured deformation data not only comprehensively reflect the influence of construction and hydrogeological conditions but also directly and clearly indicate the safety and stability status of structure. Therefore, based on two geometrically similar cylindrical shield tunnel shafts in Shenzhen, the surface deformation, structure deformation, and changes in groundwater outside the shafts during excavation were analyzed, and the deformation characteristics under the soil–rock composite stratum were summarized. Results indicate that the uneven distribution of surface surcharge and groundwater level are key factors causing differential deformations. The maximum horizontal deformation of the shafts wall is less than 0.05% of the current excavation depth (H), occurring primarily in two zones: from H − 20 m to H + 20 m and in the shallow 0–10 m range. Vertical deformations at the wall top are mostly within ±0.2% H. Localized groundwater leakage in joints may lead to groundwater redistribution and seepage-induced fine particle migration, exacerbating uneven deformations. Timely grouting when leakage occurs and selecting joints with superior waterproof sealing performance are essential measures to ensure effective sealing. Compared with general polygonal foundation pits, cylindrical retaining structures can achieve low environmental disturbances while possessing high structural stability. Full article

Flexible Behavior of Transverse Joints in Full-Scale Precast Concrete Slabs with Open-Type Joint Method

Cracks and concentrated stresses can develop in precast concrete slabs, depending on the quality of the joints. The open-type joint method was adopted herein to fabricate a full-scale precast concrete slab joint. The open-type joint method features an exposed joint configuration that allows for direct installation of shear connectors without temporary formwork, improving constructability and load transfer efficiency. Full-scale load testing was carried out using a four-point loading experiment, revealing that the precast concrete slab had a yield load of 550 kN and maximum load of 733 kN. A slab using the cast-in-place method was measured to have a yield load of 500 kN and maximum load of 710 kN. A finite element analysis (FEA) model modeled the precast concrete slab, and the displacement and maximum load were analyzed. The FEA showed a maximum error within 7%. Therefore, the FEA results can predict the structural performance of the load–displacement of the precast concrete slab. The support vector regression model predicted key structural performance indicators such as concrete compressive strength, maximum load, displacement, and principal stress. The prediction results indicated that the average error converged within 3%. The prediction results of the SVR model can complement FEA by estimating outcomes without the need for complex modeling. Thus, the precast concrete slab using the open-type joint method was able to achieve structural performance equivalent to that of the slab using the cast-in-place technique. Furthermore, FEA and machine learning will be able to predict the structural performance of precast concrete slabs using the open-type joint method. Full article

The behavior of the cast-in-place continuously reinforced concrete (CRC) bus pad applied to bus stop pavement in a central bus-only lane was experimentally analyzed under environmental and moving vehicle loads, and the early-age performance of the CRC bus pad was evaluated using experimental data and finite element analysis results. Using various measurement sensors, the concrete slab strain, longitudinal steel bar strains, horizontal and vertical displacements, and crack behavior of the CRC bus pad due to environmental loads were measured, and the dynamic responses of the concrete slab and steel bars due to moving vehicle loads were also measured. Additionally, a method for converting strain gauge measurements of a cracked concrete slab to the strain of an uncracked concrete slab was also proposed. Under environmental loads, the range of stresses acting on the steel bars and the bond between concrete and steel bars were analyzed to be appropriate for ensuring excellent performance of the CRC bus pad. The crack widths and vertical and longitudinal displacements of the CRC bus pad were found to have no effect on the pavement performance. Within the vehicle velocity range used in this experiment, the strains of the slab and steel bars as the vehicle passed through the CRC bus pad were virtually independent of the vehicle velocity and were within a range that did not cause any reduction in pavement performance. This study confirmed that the CRC bus pad has excellent performance and can replace asphalt concrete bus stop pavement or jointed concrete bus pad. Full article
