The modern road industry requires a more effective solution according to efficiency and minimizing environmental burden. This article discusses the use of recycled materials to modify bitumen binders within the concept of the circular economy. The main aim of this article was to create a new composite based on waste materials, including polymer waste and rubber crumb. The important element is the usage of locally available waste that has not been investigated previously as a material for asphalt modification. The prepared composition was preliminarily assessed according to chemical composition. Next, research dedicated to road application was conducted, including the following: determination of the resistance to hardening, aging under the influence of high temperature and air, as well as oxidation processes, assessment of penetration, and evaluation of the softening point. The conducted studies showed that the new composites with the addition of polymer waste and rubber crumb improve the thermal stability, elasticity, and resistance of bitumen to aging. Optimum concentrations of modifiers were determined that provide an increase in the performance characteristics of bitumen, including a decrease in the brittleness temperature and an increase in the softening temperature. The obtained results demonstrate the potential for the introduction of new composites based on recycled materials in road construction, contributing to increased environmental sustainability and economic efficiency. This work explores enhancing rear cabin suspension in vehicles using hydro-pneumatic shock absorbers to maintain the cabin position regardless of load and improve safety by mitigating oscillation impacts. Advanced solutions employ pneumatic elastic elements with automatic adjustment, addressing classic suspension disadvantages like variable cab position and natural frequency with load changes. The experimental analysis of reinforced rubber samples from the air socket material involved tensile testing and scanning electron microscopy. The tensile results showed a clear trend: weak reinforced samples (L, T) were ductile but had a lower strength, while the ones on the reinforcing direction (D_45, D_60) exhibited a significantly increased strength and stiffness, with D_60 being the strongest but least ductile. Stress–strain curves visually confirmed these mechanical behaviors. Crucially, SEM images of fracture surfaces consistently revealed widespread fiber pull out. This indicates that weak interfacial adhesion between the reinforcing fibers and the rubber matrix is a primary limiting factor for the composite′s overall strength. Full article

Aiming at the problems of serious pavement temperature diseases, low efficiency and high loss of ice-breaking methods, high occupancy rate of waste tires and the low utilization rate and insufficient durability of rubber particles, this paper aims to improve the service level of roads and ensure the safety of winter pavements. A pavement material with high efficiency, low carbon and environmental friendliness for active snow melting and ice breaking is developed. Firstly, NaOH, NaClO and KH550 were used to optimize the treatment of rubber particles. The hydrophilic properties, surface morphology and phase composition of rubber particles before and after optimization were studied, and the optimal treatment method of rubber particles was determined. Then, the optimized rubber particles were used to replace the natural aggregate in the polyurethane gel mixture by the volume substitution method, and the optimum polyurethane gel dosages and molding and curing processes were determined. Finally, the influence law of the road performance of RPGM was compared and analyzed by means of an indoor test, and the ice-breaking effect of RPGM was explored. The results showed that the contact angles of rubber particles treated with three solutions were reduced by 22.5%, 30.2% and 36.7%, respectively. The surface energy was improved, the element types on the surface of rubber particles were reduced and the surface impurities were effectively removed. Among them, the improvement effect of the KH550 solution was the most significant. With the increase in rubber particle content from 0% to 15%, the dynamic stability of the mixture gradually increases, with a maximum increase of 23.5%. The maximum bending strain increases with the increase in its content. The residual stability increases first and then decreases with the increase in rubber particle content, and the increase ranges are 1.4%, 3.3% and 0.5%, respectively. The anti-scattering performance increases with the increase in rubber content, and an excessive amount will lead to an increase in the scattering loss rate, but it can still be maintained below 5%. The fatigue life of polyurethane gel mixtures with 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% rubber particles is 2.9 times, 3.8 times, 4.3 times and 4.0 times higher than that of the AC-13 asphalt mixture, respectively, showing excellent anti-fatigue performance. The friction coefficient of the mixture increases with an increase in the rubber particle content, which can be increased by 22.3% compared with the ordinary asphalt mixture. RPGM shows better de-icing performance than traditional asphalt mixtures, and with an increase in rubber particle content, the ice-breaking ability is effectively improved. When the thickness of the ice layer exceeds 9 mm, the ice-breaking ability of the mixture is significantly weakened. Mainly through the synergistic effect of stress coupling, thermal effect and interface failure, the bonding performance of the ice–pavement interface is weakened under the action of driving load cycle, and the ice layer is loosened, broken and peeled off, achieving efficient de-icing. Metaconcrete (MC) is a class of engineered cementitious composites that integrates locally resonant inclusions to filter stress waves. While the dynamic benefits are well established, the effect of resonator content and geometry on static compressive resistance remains unclear. This study develops the first two-dimensional mesoscale finite-element model that explicitly represents steel cores, rubber coatings, and interfacial transition zones to predict the quasi-static behavior of MC. The model is validated against benchmark experiments, reproducing the 56% loss of compressive strength recorded for a 10.6% resonator volume fraction with an error of less than 1%. A parametric analysis covering resonator ratios from 1.5% to 31.8%, diameters from 16.8 mm to 37.4 mm, and coating thicknesses from 1.0 mm to 4.2 mm shows that (i) strength decays exponentially with volumetric content, approaching an asymptote at ≈20% of plain concrete strength; (ii) larger cores with thinner coatings minimize stiffness loss (<10%) while limiting strength reduction to 15–20%; and (iii) material properties of the resonator have a secondary influence (<6%). Two closed-form expressions for estimating MC strength and Young’s modulus (R2 = 0.83 and 0.94, respectively) are proposed to assist with the preliminary design. The model and correlations lay the groundwork for optimizing MC that balances vibration mitigation with structural capacity. Full article

Tire shape prediction presents significant engineering challenges due to the complex behavior of cord-rubber composites during manufacturing processes. Fabric cord components undergo thermal shrinkage and permanent deformation that substantially influence final tire dimensions, creating discrepancies between mold geometry and cured tire shape. While Post-Cure Inflation (PCI) helps control these dimensional changes, accurate prediction methods remain essential for reliable performance forecasting. This study addresses this challenge through a systematic experimental characterization of fabric cord behavior under manufacturing conditions. Thermal shrinkage and permanent set were quantified under various combinations of in-mold strain and PCI force, with distinct patterns identified for different cord materials (PET and nylon). Based on these experimental findings, a comprehensive finite element analysis methodology was developed to predict cured tire shape. Validation against 65 tire profiles demonstrated remarkable improvements over conventional approaches, with dimensional error reductions of 54.2% for the outer diameter and 49.5% for the section width. Profile and footprint predictions also showed significantly enhanced accuracy, particularly in capturing geometric features critical for tire–road contact characteristics. The proposed methodology enables more precise tire design optimization, improved performance prediction, and reduced prototype iterations, ultimately enhancing both product development efficiency and final tire performance. The growing demand for passenger comfort and environmental protection, as well as reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, drives the search for new, high-performance materials. Composite leaf springs, applied as part of elastic suspension systems and with the advantages of being strong and lightweight, with a high load-carrying capacity, are a possible method with which to achieve those goals. In this study, an epoxy thermoset was blended with 10–50 wt.% polysulfide rubber and reinforced with 10 wt.% alumina powder. The characteristics of the copolymer composite blend were studied by performing ASTM mechanical tests, including tensile strength, impact strength, hardness, and damping ratio tests. The experimental outcomes showed that increasing the proportion of polysulfide rubber caused a reduction in the maximum tensile strength, modulus at fracture, natural as well as damped frequency, and hardness, whereas a significant improvement was observed in impact strength, logarithmic decrement, and the damping ratio. Reinforcement with alumina powder caused a meaningful increase in the maximum tensile strength and natural frequency, with a good improvement in deformation strength. Impact strength and the damping ratio were maximized when alumina powder was increasingly added. This increase was contrary to what occurred for the hardness, which decreased upon reinforcement. Statistical methods, altering the design of the experiments, and linear regression were used to optimize the composite mixture for manufacturing leaf springs. Finally, the model was validated using analysis of variance and probability plots (normal distribution). The regression equations of tensile and impact strength, hardness, and damping ratio test results proved composite suitability for the application of leaf springs under representative loading and operating conditions. Finite element analysis of the composite material was performed using SolidWorks Simulation 22 Mechanical software. ANSYS 2022 R1 was used to study the mechanical properties of the leaf spring model fabricated from the proposed composite material. The finite element analysis results showed a significant reduction in the weight of leaf springs, with very good mechanical properties, including the tensile and impact strength, hardness, and damping ratio, when using the proposed copolymer-reinforced composite material. The development of prosthetic limbs has benefited individuals who suffered amputations due to accidents or medical conditions. During the development of conventional prosthetics, several challenges have been observed regarding the functional limitations, the restricted degrees of freedom compared to an actual human limb, and the biocompatibility issues between the surface of the prosthetic limb and the human tissue or skin. These issues could result in mobility impairments due to failed mimicry of the actual stress distribution, causing discomfort, chronic pain, and tissue damage or possible infections. Especially in cases where underlying conditions exist, such as diabetes, possible trauma, or vascular disease, a failed adaptation of the prosthetic limb could lead to complete abandonment of the prosthetic part. To address these challenges, the insertion of topologically optimized parts with a biomimetic approach has allowed the optimization of the mimicry of the complex functionality behavior of the natural body parts, allowing the development of lightweight efficient anthropomorphic structures. This approach results in unified stress distribution, minimizing the practical limitations while also adding an aesthetic that aids in reducing any possible symptoms related to social anxiety and impaired social functioning. In this paper, the development of a novel anthropomorphic designed prosthetic foot with a novel Thermoplastic Polyurethane-based composite (TPU-Ground Tire Rubber 10 wt.%) was studied. The final designs contain advanced sustainable polymeric materials, gyroid lattice geometries, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for performance optimization. Initially, a static evaluation was conducted to replicate the phenomena at the standing process of a conventional replicated above-knee prosthetic. Furthermore, dynamic testing was conducted to assess the mechanical responses to high-intensity exercises (e.g., sprinting, jumping). The evaluation of the dynamic mechanical response of the prosthetic limb was compared to actual plantogram-derived foot pressure data during static phases (standing, light walking) and dynamic phenomena (sprinting, jumping) to address the optimal geometry and density, ensuring maximum compatibility. This innovative approach allows the development of tailored prosthetic limbs with optimal replication of the human motion patterns, resulting in improved patient outcomes and higher success rates. The proposed design presented hysteretic damping factor and energy absorption efficiency adequate for load handling of intense exercises (0.18 loss factor, 57% energy absorption efficiency) meaning that it is suitable for further research and possible upcycling. The bruising of fruits occurs at various stages, including picking, transportation, and sale. For fruits with large kernels that occupy a significant portion of their overall volume, considering the impact of the kernel is crucial in elucidating the mechanisms of bruising and controlling bruise formation. This study employs reverse engineering to develop a composite finite element model of loquat peel, flesh, and kernels. Bruise formation during collisions is analyzed from the perspectives of contact force, equivalent stress, energy, bruise volume, and bruise susceptibility, aiming to reveal the significant role of the fruit core in the bruise formation process. In this paper, we propose the use of 3D printing technology to accurately quantify bruise measurement for fruits with large kernels. The results showed that the maximum contact force, equivalent stress, and internal energy between loquat and steel/wood were essentially consistent, but all exceeded those observed when using rubber. Due to the blocking of stress transmission by the kernel, the susceptibility of loquats to bruising increases with height before decreasing. This study elucidates the mechanism of bruise formation in fruits with large kernels and provides methods and ideas for the research and precise measurement of complex fruit bruising characteristics. The dynamic response and failure of rubber-coated sandwich composite structures with buoyancy material core (RC-BMC-SCS) subjected to high-energy low-velocity impacts were experimentally and numerically investigated. Six types of BMC-SCSs were designed and manufactured, and high-energy low-velocity impact experiments were performed. Based on the Mohr-Coulomb theory and the Ogden hyperelasticity constitutive model, a low-velocity impact finite element analysis model was developed. The results indicate that BMC-SCS damage stages could be divided into: (1) matrix damage, (2) core cracks, (3) debonding and fiber breakage. Three distinct damage stages of the RC-BMC-SCS were revealed: (1) rubber layer energy absorption, (2) core cracks, (3) debonding. The rubber layer can enhance the damage threshold by approximately 100% compared to BMC-SCS. However, rubber energy absorption capacity has an upper limit. Additionally, the larger the curvature of the BMC-SCS, the higher the initial stiffness of the structure and the larger the impact damage area. The results of this study provide valuable insights for the multifunctional design of composite deep-sea marine structures. Full article

Due to the significant impedance mismatch between water and air, two types of pipeline silencers designed for the same target frequency with different filling materials often have significantly different thickness. This increases the difficulty in designing silencers for multiple pipelines with different filling materials in narrow spaces. The paper reports a metamaterial design paradigm based on a Helmholtz cavity for low-frequency sound absorption for both air pipelines and water-filled pipelines. An asymmetric absorption metamaterial with coupled Helmholtz resonators is proposed to reduce the impact of low-frequency noise in air pipelines. By coupling the absorption mode and reflection mode, the asymmetric absorption metamaterial with a thickness of 71 mm achieves 95.6% absorption at 403 Hz. The tunable absorbing performance in broadband is confirmed by a finite element simulation. Additionally, a composite metamaterial constructed with HRs associated with a rubber layer is proposed for low-frequency broadband sound absorption in water-filled pipelines. An average absorptance of above 0.8 is achieved over the range of 380–508 Hz by coupling four basic composite metamaterial units with a thickness of 31.5 mm. The proposed design paradigm can reduce the complexity of designing multiple pipelines silencers with different filling materials because the muffler should have similar thickness in the same paradigm. In recent years, non-pneumatic tires have been gaining popularity, which can be seen in the increase in research results and proposals from world-class tire manufacturers (mainly as technology demonstrators). The possibility of eliminating the need to maintain compressed air is a major factor in the development of non-pneumatic tires and their usage in vehicles. Articles and patents were reviewed in relation to the load transfer mechanism, the design of non-pneumatic tire components, and recommendations for materials. Non-pneumatic tire top loaders are a desirable type of this type of wheel compared to bottom loaders, because they transfer loads over a larger part of the wheel, which increases their load capacity. Most non-pneumatic tires consist of a rim, an elastic structure, and a shear beam/band with a tread. The rim is used to secure the elastic structure and can be fitted with vibration dampers in the form of circumferential rubber rings. The gradient elastic structure, in comparison with the homogeneous structure (same thickness or dimensions of the elements), allows the range of axle displacements to be adjusted to the desired level without the need to increase the size of the wheel, and also influences the change in the location of the maximum stresses. The shear beam/ band mimics the properties of compressed air used in pneumatic tires. The shear beam/ band made as a webbing geometry ensures uniform pressure in the contact patch. The reinforced composite shear beam/ band ensures adequate bending strength with low energy losses and a small thickness of the beam/ band. Materials commonly used in the tire industry are used as reinforcement for the shear beam/ band, which was illustrated by the results of our own research. Full article

In this study, numerical simulations using the Abaqus finite element model were performed to evaluate the effects of incorporating waste tyres of varying sizes into the base layer as part of a coupled tyre–pavement structure. The tyre-reinforced structure demonstrated superior deformation resilience, attributed to the hyperelastic properties of tyre rubber, underscoring its potential for applications where deformation recovery is essential. For achieving a uniform settlement, the entire tyre stacking scheme is recommended, whereas the one-third tyre configuration is ideal for minimising displacement. The one-half tyre configuration provides a balanced approach, optimising resource utilisation for structures with moderate performance requirements. The inclusion of tyres increases the equivalent stress within the cement-stabilised gravel layer beneath the tyre, and this effect is less pronounced with smaller tyre sizes. Notably, the projected portion of the tyre tread enhances the bearing capacity of the base structure, improving the load distribution and overall structural performance. The middle and bottom surface layers were identified as the most critical for controlling deformation and stress distribution, while a moderate modulus is advised for the surface course to achieve a balance between deformation control and stress uniformity. The integration of high-modulus layers with tyre reinforcement offers an optimised solution for both deformation management and stress distribution. This study highlights the potential of tyre-reinforced pavements as an innovative and sustainable construction practice, particularly suited for light to moderate traffic conditions. Further research is recommended to explore the long-term environmental and economic benefits, as well as the impacts of tyre composition and ageing on performance. Full article

The use of additives in asphalt concrete has improved the performance of road pavements. Some additives include silica powder, fly ash, and crumb rubber. This study analyzed additive levels’ effect on the volumetric characteristics of asphalt mixtures using a statistical approach. This research uses aggregate gradation for asphalt concrete wearing a coarse layer to determine the effect of additive content on the volumetric of hot asphalt mixtures. Asphalt modification is used with silica powder at compositions of 0%, 2%, and 6%; fly ash with 0%, 2%, and 4%; and crumb rubber with 0%, 1%, and 1.25%. Samples were made and tested according to the Marshall test procedure. The volumetric characteristics of the asphalt mixture were subjected to correlation analysis with the Pearson and Spearman rank approaches and the ANOVA test. The Pearson and Spearman rank correlation analyses showed that fly ash and silica additives were suspected of having no correlation and influence on volumetric characteristics except for crumb rubber. The ANOVA test results show that the largest volumetric characteristics are significantly influenced by the crumb rubber additive on voids in mineral aggregates. In contrast, the silica and fly ash additives affect voids in mineral aggregates and Marshall stability. The difference in silica and fly ash additive content has shown different ANOVA test results even though they have the same size and composition of the forming elements. Full article

This paper develops a composite weaving structure, combining hexagonal micro-bumps and hexagonal grooves, in the design of the rubber surface of the screw pump. This allows us to solve the problem of high torque and fast wear of the rubber stator during the operation of screw pump lifting oil recovery, based on the bionic hexagonal surface structure, traditional surface damping principle, and fluid dynamic pressure lubrication theory. Finite element analysis is first conducted to quantitatively analyze the impacts of the parallel side distance, groove width, and groove depth on the surface flow field and wall pressure field of the composite hexagonal structure. Based on the simulation law, the rubber surface laser structure is then designed and prepared by nanosecond laser processing. Afterward, tribological experiments are conducted under the condition of long-term immersion in the actual extraction fluid of shale oil wells. This aims at simulating the actual downhole oil production conditions and quantitatively studying the impact of the size of the composite hexagonal structure on the lubrication characteristics of the friction part of the stationary rotor, as well as the effect of abrasion reduction. The results show that, within the simulation range, the smaller the parallel side distance, the higher the load-carrying capacity. In addition, the hexagonal weave with a parallel side distance of 3 mm has a higher wall load carrying capacity than that with distances of 4 mm and 5 mm. When the groove width is equal to 0.4 mm, the oil film load carrying capacity is higher than that in the case of 0.2 mm. When the groove depth increases, the oil film pressure first increases and then stabilizes or decreases after reaching 0.3 mm. In the hexagonal weave, the friction ratio of the rotor is equal to 0.4 mm. In the tribological experiment of hexagonal weave, the smaller the parallel side distance, the smaller the friction coefficient, and the 0.5 mm weave has the highest performance. Full article

This research examines the possibility of palm oil and oil palm trunk biochar (OPTB) from pyrolysis effectively serving as alternative processing oils and fillers, substituting petroleum-based counterparts in natural rubber (NR) composites. Chemical, elemental, surface and morphological analyses were used to characterize both carbon black (CB) and OPTB, by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) gas porosimetry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The influences of OPTB contents from 0 to 100 parts per hundred rubber (phr) on thermal, dielectric, dynamic mechanical, and cure characteristics, and the key mechanical properties of particulate NR-composites were investigated. OPTB enhanced the characteristics of the composites, as demonstrated by a rise in dielectric constant, thermal stability, storage modulus, glass transition temperature (Tg), hardness and modulus at 300% elongation, along with a decrease in the loss tangent (tan δ). Tear strength exhibited an increase with OPTB content up to a specific threshold, whereas tensile strength and elongation at break declined. This implies a compromise between the various mechanical properties when incorporating OPTB as a filler. This work supports the potential application of OPTB as a renewable substitute for CB in the rubber industry, particularly in tire production and other industrial rubber applications, which would also bring environmental, sustainability, and economic benefits for the palm oil-related industry.
