There is a long tradition of studying river sharing problems. A central question frequently examined and addressed is how common benefits or costs can be distributed fairly. In this context, axiomatic approaches of cooperative game theory often use contradictory principles of international water law, which are strictly rejected in practice. That leads to the question: Are these methods suitable for a real-world application? First, we conduct a systematic literature review based on the PRISMA approach to categorise the river sharing problems. We identified several articles describing a variety of methods and real-world applications, highlighting interdisciplinary interest. Second, we evaluate the identified axiomatic literature related to TU games with regard to their suitability for real-world applications. We exclude those “standalone” methods that exclusively follow extreme principles and/or do not describe cooperative behaviour. This is essential for a fair distribution. Third, we propose to use the traditional game-theoretical approach of airport games in the context of river protection measures to ensure a better economic interpretation and to enforce future cooperation in the joint implementation of protective measures. About one billion people worldwide are affected by neurologic disorders. Among the various neurologic disorders, one of the most common is Alzheimer’s disease (AD). AD is a neurodegenerative disorder that progressively affects cognitive functions, disrupting the daily lives of millions of individuals. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is often considered a prodromal stage of Alzheimer’s disease. In this article, we retrieved data from the online available dataset GSE63060, which includes transcriptomic data of 329 blood samples, of which there are 104 cognitively normal controls, 80 MCI patients, and 145 AD patients. We used transcriptomic data related to all three groups to perform an over-representation analysis of the gene ontologies followed by a network analysis. The aim of our study is to pinpoint alterations, detectable through a non-invasive method, in biological processes affected in MCI that persist during AD. Our goal is to uncover transcriptomic changes that could support earlier diagnosis and the development of more effective therapeutic strategies, starting from the early stages of the disease, to slow down or mitigate its progression. Our work provides a consistent picture of the transcriptomic unbalance of many genes strongly involved in ribosomal formation and biogenesis and splicing processes both in patients with MCI and with AD. Background: The anterior cerebral artery (ACA), a critical component of the cerebral arterial circle, exhibits substantial morphological variability. While previous studies have explored ACA morphology using cadaveric and imaging methods, a comprehensive meta-analysis incorporating the latest evidence is lacking. Methods: Following current guidelines, a systematic review and meta-analysis were performed across four major databases, supplemented by the gray literature and targeted journal searches. Ninety-nine studies, encompassing 85,316 patients, met the inclusion criteria. Statistical analyses were conducted using R, applying random effects models to estimate pooled prevalence and morphometric parameters. Results: The pooled prevalence of typical ACA morphology was 93.75%, whereas variants were noted in 6.25% of cases. The predominant variation identified was the accessory ACA (aACA) (1.99%), followed by unilateral absence of the A1 segment (1.78%), with the latter being more frequently recognized in imaging studies (p < 0.0001). Rare variants encompassed azygos ACA (azACA) (0.22%), fenestrated ACA (fACA) (0.02%), and bihemispheric ACA (bACA) (0.02%). The mean diameter and length of the A1 segment were measured at 2.10 mm and 14.24 mm, respectively. Hypoplasia of the A1 segment (<1 mm diameter) was recorded in 3.15% of cases. The influences of imaging modality, laterality, and population distribution on prevalence estimates were minimal. No significant publication bias was detected. Conclusions: Although infrequent, variants of the ACA possess significant clinical importance attributable to their correlation with aneurysm formation and the impairment of collateral circulation. The aACA and the absence of the A1 segment emerged as the most common variations. This meta-analysis presents an updated and high-quality synthesis of ACA morphology, serving as a valuable reference for clinicians and anatomists. Full article

Since the end of the Civil War, Cambodia has pursued economic development to enhance livelihoods, particularly in rural areas, where land is a critical resource. Previous studies have indicated that the country has changed land use and land cover. However, they have not explained how these changes can improve the livelihoods of local communities, thereby mitigating their negative impacts through an asset-based approach. Battambang Province, in the northwestern region, was the battleground until political integration in 1996. Since then, the province has been home to immigrants exploring the lands for livelihood. Thus, this study aims to examine agricultural livelihoods in the villages of Dei Kraham and Ou Toek Thla, located west of Battambang Town. These were selected because of their common characteristics. Adopting a quantitative approach and a sustainable livelihood framework, this study employed stratified random sampling to select 123 families for interviews across three population subgroups: old settlers, new settlers, and young settlers. In situ information was collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis tests to assess the livelihood assets underlying the physical, natural, human, financial, and social capital. The statistical analysis results reveal no significant differences (p-value = 0.079) in livelihood assets between the strata at the village level. Meanwhile, significant differences were observed in physical, human, and financial capital between old and young settlers when examining the subgroups (p-value 0.000). The extent of the land resources held by old settlers was associated with household income and livelihoods related to agriculture. Based on livelihood asset scores, nearly half of the new settlers (0.49–0.5) and a quarter of the young settlers (0.47) are vulnerable groups requiring support. The youth will soon face an uncertain future if they do not prioritize education. Full article

Comparison of the Effects of Cold-Water Immersion Applied Alone and Combined Therapy on the Recovery of Muscle Fatigue After Exercise: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Cold-water immersion (CWI), as a common recovery method, has been widely used in the field of post-exercise fatigue recovery. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive and systematic scientific evaluation of the combined effects of cold-water immersion combined with other therapies (CWI + Other). The aim of this study was to compare the effects of CWI and CWI + Other in post-exercise fatigue recovery and to explore the potential benefits of CWI + Other. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and EBSCO databases to include 24 studies (475 subjects in total) and performed a meta-analysis using standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The results showed that both CWI + Other (SMD = −0.68, 95% CI: −1.03 to −0.33) and CWI (SMD = −0.37, 95% CI: −0.65 to −0.10) were effective in reducing delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). In subgroup analyses of athletes, both CWI + Other (SMD = −1.13, 95% CI: −1.76 to −0.49) and CWI (SMD = −0.47, 95% CI: −0.87 to −0.08) also demonstrated significant effects. In addition, CWI + Other significantly reduced post-exercise C-reactive protein (CRP) levels (SMD = −0.62, 95% CI: −1.12 to −0.13), and CWI with water temperatures higher than 10 °C also showed a CRP-lowering effect (MD = −0.18, 95% CI: −0.30 to −0.07), suggesting a potential benefit in anti-inflammation. There were no significant differences between the two interventions in the metrics of creatine kinase (CK; CWI: SMD = −0.01, 95% CI: −0.27 to 0.24; CWI + Other: SMD = 0.26, 95% CI: −0.51 to 1.03) or countermovement jump (CMJ; CWI: SMD = 0.22, 95% CI: −0.13 to 0.57; CWI + Other: SMD = 0.07, 95% CI: −0.70 to 0.85). Changes in lifestyles, as well as the growing attention to healthy nutrition, led to the increasing demand for wines with reduced alcohol content. The reduction in fermentable sugars in the pre-fermentation stage of wine is one of the common methods for the production of wines with lower alcohol content. Viticultural practices such as early harvesting, use of growth regulators, reducing leaf area to limit photosynthetic rate, and pre-harvest irrigation are utilized. Additionally, techniques such as juice dilution, juice filtration with membranes, and the use of enzymes (e.g., glucose oxidase) are also employed in the pre-fermentation stage. This review summarizes and describes the classic and innovative viticultural and pre-fermentation techniques used to reduce the alcohol content and their main impact on the compositional characteristics of wine. Background: In a global panorama marked by a progressive rise in obesity, metabolic syndrome, and chronic non-communicable disease prevalence, nutrition education (NE) might play a pivotal role in restoring adoption and strengthening adherence to dietary patterns that protect human health. Therefore, the primary purpose of this work is to review the existing scientific literature studying NE programs aimed at schoolchildren in the decade 2014–2024 and evaluate the effectiveness of intervention tools. Methods: During the first phase of this research, a qualitative analysis was conducted to track similarity in intervention tools and strategies used in nutrition education programs. In the second phase, a quantitative analysis was carried out, extracting common parameters among studies and assessing their potential influence in improving adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD). Results: A high degree of heterogeneity was observed in educational program designs and intervention tools, which were usually not properly described and justified. All studies that measured adherence to the MD registered an improvement after the intervention, in some cases even higher than 10%. However, this study found no relationship between common parameters (i.e., number of formal tools, number of non-formal tools, lesson duration, and program length) used in NE and the improvement in students’ adherence to MD. Conclusions: This research has contributed to outlining a general framework of NE and to promoting a systematic approach in this research field. Full article

Harnessing Nature’s Chemistry: Deciphering Olive Oil Phenolics for the Control of Invasive Breast Carcinoma

Breast cancer (BC) is the most common malignancy and the second-leading cause of cancer-related mortalities in women. Epidemiological studies suggested the reduced BC incidence in Mediterranean populations due to the daily consumption of diets rich in extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO). EVOO secoiridoid phenolics are widely known for their positive outcomes on multiple cancers, including BC. The current study investigates the suppressive effects of individual and combined EVOO phenolics for BC progression and motility. Screening of a small library of EVOO phenolics at a single dose of 10 µM against the viability of the BC cell lines ZR-75-1 (luminal A) and MDA-MB-231 (triple negative BC, TNBC) identified oleocanthal (OC) and ligstroside aglycone (LA) as the most active hits. Screening of EVOO phenolics for BC cells migration inhibition identified OC, LA, and the EVOO lignans acetoxypinoresinol and pinoresinol as the most active hits. Combination studies of different olive phenolics showed that OC combined with LA had the best synergistic inhibitory effects against the TNBC MDA-MB-231 cells migration. A combination of 5 µM of each of OC and LA potently suppressed the migration and invasion of the MDA-MB-231 cells versus LA and OC individual therapies and vehicle control (VC). Animal studies using the ZR-75-1 BC cells orthotopic xenografting model in female nude mice showed significant tumor progression suppression by the combined OC-LA, 5 mg/kg each, ip, 3X/week treatments compared to individual LA and OC treatments and VC. The BC suppressive effects of the OC-LA combination were associated with the modulation of SMYD2–EZH2–STAT3 signaling pathway. A metastasis–clonogenicity animal study model using female nude mice subjected to tail vein injection of MDA-MB-231-Luc TNBC cells also revealed the effective synergy of the combined OC-LA, 5 mg/kg each, compared to their individual therapies and VC. Thus, EVOO cultivars rich in OC with optimal LA content can be useful nutraceuticals for invasive hormone-dependent BC and TNBC progression and metastasis. Full article

Background and Objectives: Flexible ureteroscopic surgery is a common minimally invasive procedure utilized for the management of various urological conditions. While effective, postoperative complications such as fever can occur, necessitating the identification of reliable biomarkers for early detection and management. In this study, we specifically evaluated the predictive performance of three preoperative hematologic indices: the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immune–inflammation index (SII). Materials and Methods: By systematically comparing these biomarkers through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and logistic regression modeling, we aimed to identify the most accurate predictor of postoperative fever development. Our cohort included patients who developed postoperative fever, many of whom exhibited normal WBC counts, allowing us to evaluate the discriminatory power of alternative inflammatory biomarkers. Results: Among the 150 patients, 32 developed postoperative fever. Conventional WBC counts did not predict fever, with 91% of feverish individuals having normal WBC values. In the ROC curve analysis, NLR outperformed SII (AUC 0.847, cutoff 796) and PLR (AUC 0.743, cutoff 106), with an AUC of 0.996 at 2.96. A combined logistic model achieved 100% sensitivity and 91% specificity (AUC = 0.996). Conclusions: This study addresses a critical gap in perioperative monitoring by validating readily available complete blood count-derived ratios as clinically meaningful predictors of postoperative inflammatory responses. Background/Objectives: Fatigue and cognitive impairment are common issues for People with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS), affecting over 80% and 40–65%, respectively. The relationship between these two debilitating conditions is complex, with cognitive deficits exacerbating fatigue and vice versa. This study investigates the effects of a multimodal intervention combining cognitive rehabilitation and neuromodulation to alleviate fatigue and enhance cognitive performance in PwMS. Methods: The research employed multiple baselines across the subjects in a Single-Case Experimental Design (mbSCED) with a cohort of three PwMS diagnosed with Relapsing–Remitting MS. The intervention protocol consisted of a baseline phase followed by a four-week treatment involving transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and cognitive training using RehaCom® software (version 6.9.0). Fatigue levels were measured using the modified Fatigue Impact Scale (mFIS), while cognitive performance was evaluated through standardized neuropsychological assessments. Results: The multimodal protocol exhibited high feasibility and acceptability, with no dropouts. Individual responsiveness outcomes varied, with two PwMS showing significant decreases in fatigue and improvements in cognitive performance, particularly in the trained domains. Their motor performance and quality of life also improved, suggesting that the treatment had indirect beneficial effects. Conclusions: This study provides preliminary evidence for the potential benefits of integrating neuromodulation and cognitive rehabilitation as a personalized therapeutic strategy for managing fatigue and cognitive impairments in MS. Further research is needed to delineate the specific contributions of each intervention component and establish standardized protocols for clinical implementation. The insights gained may lead to more effective, tailored treatment options for PwMS. Full article

The SCPB targets the C2–C4 nerves to anesthetize the occipital scalp region, covering the lesser occipital nerve territory that lies within typical posterior scalp incisions. Clinical evidence shows the block is effective in reducing acute postoperative pain after occipital craniotomy and diminishes opioid requirements. Studies have demonstrated successful and long-lasting analgesia, reductions in 24-h opioid consumption, and a lower incidence of severe pain. Moreover, the technique exhibits a low complication rate and is safer than a deep cervical plexus block because the injection remains superficial and avoids critical vascular and neural structures. When delivered under ultrasound guidance, major adverse events are exceedingly rare. By reducing opioid use, the SCPB can help reduce postoperative complications, allowing earlier neurological assessments and fewer opioid-related side effects. Incorporation of the SCPB into multimodal analgesia regimens can, therefore, accelerate postoperative recovery by providing regionally focused, opioid-sparing pain control without clinically significant sedation. Overall, current data support the SCPB as a dependable, well-tolerated, and clinically practical approach for managing post-craniotomy pain in patients undergoing occipital approaches. In this narrative review, we will discuss the mechanism of action and anatomy, the clinical application, safety and tolerability, patient outcomes, and emerging future directions of the superficial cervical plexus block and how it mitigates post-occipital craniotomy pain. Organic farming represents a paradigm that emphasises a balance between production and environmental sustainability. In the European Union (EU), organic farming has evolved into a global production system with harmonised standards and increasing market demand. Compared with conventional agriculture, it produces greater environmental benefits. The European Green Deal and the Farm to Fork (F2F) strategy highlight the role of organic farming in achieving the EU’s climate and environmental goals, aiming to use at least 25% of the total agricultural area for organic farming by 2030. This research assesses the contributions of Member States towards achieving the objectives of the European Green Deal and F2F strategy and increasing the number of organic farming areas in the future. The research assessed the performance of EU Member States during the period of 2018–2022 and for the projected period up to 2030, using indicators outlined in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Strategic Plan. EU Member States were classified by their historical growth in organic farming areas and their required future performance to meet targets. The results showed that the increase in organic farming areas across the EU is a sign of a shift towards more sustainable farming, although performance varied among Member States. Overall, performance tended to improve in seventeen Member States, remained stable in nine, and declined in only one. Full article

The Effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence-Based Interventions for Students with Learning Disabilities: A Systematic Review

Background/Objectives: While artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming education, its specific effectiveness for students with learning disabilities (LD) requires rigorous evaluation. This systematic review aims to assess the efficacy of AI-based educational interventions for students with LD, with a specific focus on the methodological quality and risk of bias of the available evidence. Methods: A systematic search was conducted across seven major databases (Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, APA PsycInfo, ERIC, Scopus, PubMed) for experimental studies published between 2022 and 2025. This review followed PRISMA guidelines, using the PICOS framework for inclusion criteria. A formal risk of bias assessment was performed using the ROBINS-I and JBI critical appraisal tools. Results: Eleven studies (representing 10 independent experiments), encompassing 3033 participants, met the inclusion criteria. The most studied disabilities were dyslexia (six studies) and other specific learning disorders (three studies). Personalized/adaptive learning systems and game-based learning were the most common AI interventions. All 11 studies reported positive outcomes. However, the risk of bias assessment revealed significant methodological limitations: no studies were rated as having a low risk of bias, with most presenting a moderate (70%) to high/serious (30%) risk. Despite these limitations, quantitative results from the stronger studies showed large effect sizes, such as in arithmetic fluency (d = 1.63) and reading comprehension (d = −1.66). Conclusions: AI-based interventions demonstrate significant potential for supporting students with learning disabilities, with unanimously positive reported outcomes. However, this conclusion must be tempered by the considerable risk of bias and methodological weaknesses prevalent in the current literature. The limited and potentially biased evidence base warrants cautious interpretation. Future research must prioritize high-quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and longitudinal assessments to establish a definitive evidence base and investigate long-term effects, including the risk of cognitive offloading. Potential of Pumpkin Pulp Carotenoid Extract in the Prevention of Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity

Background/Objectives: Doxorubicin is a chemotherapeutic agent whose clinical use is limited by side effects (SEs). The most common SE is doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC), for which there is still no prevention. The hypothesis arises that active substances of natural origin could influence DIC prevention by affecting several pathways of DIC occurrence. Methods: Thirty Wistar rats were divided into six groups (control, NADES (C8:C10) solvent, pumpkin pulp extract, doxorubicin, NADES (C8:C10) solvent–doxorubicin, and pumpkin pulp extract–doxorubicin). During the experiment, parameters of general condition, body, and heart weight were observed. Heart function parameters were monitored by measuring the levels of serum NT-pro-BNP, CK-MB, and hsTnT. Tissue damage was evaluated by determining the doxorubicin damage score and the expression of anti-cardiac troponin I, anti-Nrf2, anti-Bcl-2, anti-caspase-3, anti-COX2, and anti-Ki67 antibodies. Results: Doxorubicin administration led to impaired general condition of animals and increased the levels of NT-proBNP, CK-MB, hsTnT, and myocardium tissue damage of medium grade. Its administration induced apoptosis (as evidenced by elevated Casp3), reduced antiapoptotic Bcl-2 and troponin I expression in cardiomyocytes. Reduced Nrf2 expression due to doxorubicin administration was restored when pumpkin pulp extract containing carotenoids was coadministered, which led to the normalization of Casp3, Bcl-2, and troponin I expression. Consequently, the general condition and body weight were better in animals treated with both doxorubicin and the other treatment compared to those treated with doxorubicin alone. Conclusions: The results of this study strongly suggest that pumpkin pulp extract containing carotenoids has a cardioprotective effect, possibly by regulating the Nrf2 pathway. Full article

To enhance agricultural soil health and soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration, it is important to accurately measure SOC. The aim of this study was to compare common methods for measuring SOC in soils in order to determine the most effective approach among different agricultural land types. The measurement methods of loss-on-ignition (LOI), automated dry combustion (Dumas), and real-time near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) were compared. A total of 95 soil core samples, ranging in clay and calcareous content, were collected across a range of agricultural land types from forty-eight fields across five farms in the Southwest of England. There were similar and positive correlations between all three methods for measuring SOC (ranging from r = 0.549 to 0.579; all p < 0.001). On average, permanent grass fields had higher SOC content (6.6%) than arable and temporary ley fields (4.6% and 4.5%, respectively), with the difference of 2% indicating a higher carbon storage potential in permanent grassland fields. Newly predicted conversion equations of linear regression were developed among the three measurement methods according to all the fields and land types. The correlation of the conversation equations among the three methods in permanent grass fields was strong and significant compared to those in both arable and temporary ley fields. The analysed results could help understand soil carbon management and maximise sequestration. Moreover, the approach of using real-time NIRS analysis with a rechargeable portable NIRS soil device can offer a convenient and cost-saving alternative for monitoring preliminary SOC changes timely on or offsite without personnel risks from the high-temperature furnace and chemical reagent adopted in the LOI and Dumas processes, respectively, at the laboratory. Therefore, the study suggests that faster, lower-cost, and safer methods like NIRS for analysing initial SOC measurements are now available to provide similar SOC results as traditional soil analysis methods of the LOI and Dumas. Further studies on assessing SOC levels in different farm locations, land, and soil types across seasons using NIRS will improve benchmarked SOC data for farm stakeholders in making evidence-informed agricultural practices.
