This qualitative case study examined how university taekwondo coaches and athletes perceive artificial intelligence (AI) in sport, with emphasis on the psychological dimensions of implementation readiness. Using convenience sampling, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 23 coaches and 30 athletes competing in inter-university taekwondo championships in Turkey. Data were analysed through qualitative content analysis, and inter-coder agreement was quantified using Cohen’s Kappa. Competition analysis and training support were identified as the most useful applications. Reported benefits included faster feedback, improved athlete monitoring, and more systematic performance analysis, while concerns centred on incorrect guidance, loss of human elements in coaching, and insufficient accountability in AI-supported decisions. Athletes were generally positive about AI-assisted refereeing when it was framed around fairness and visibility, whereas coaches were more cautious when AI was presented as a substitute for core coaching functions. Interpreted through self-determination theory and self-efficacy as sensitising lenses, the findings indicate that AI adoption is most feasible when systems support rather than displace human roles, operate under clear governance and human oversight, and are accompanied by targeted training. The findings are context-specific and provide a basis for further empirical work. The findings of this study contribute to UN-SDG 9 by supporting the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence in sport management. Full article

The present study aimed to examine whether self-esteem acts as a mediator in the relationship between problematic internet use (PIU) and well-being among athletes, and to determine the implications of these relationships for educational practice, coaching strategies, and athlete support interventions. A total of 334 Polish athletes participated in the study and completed the Polish versions of the Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale 2 (GPIUS2), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES), and the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHC-SF). Pearson’s r correlation coefficients and mediation analyses using a bootstrap approach were conducted. The main results showed that PIU was negatively associated with self-esteem and well-being, whereas self-esteem was positively associated with well-being. Statistically significant, although small, indirect associations through self-esteem were observed between PIU and general well-being, as well as between all dimensions of PIU and emotional and psychological well-being. For social well-being, statistically significant indirect associations were observed only for preference for online social interaction and deficient self-regulation. These findings suggest that self-esteem may represent one psychological factor associated with the interrelations between PIU and well-being in athletes. The results may contribute to a more cautious understanding of the links between problematic internet use, self-esteem, and well-being, and may inform psychoeducational and preventive strategies in sport settings while acknowledging the limited practical significance of the observed effects. Background. Five-a-side soccer for the blind (F5) is a Paralympic sport that has been the subject of research aimed at identifying variables that influence performance. However, despite its growing popularity, there is limited scientific literature on quantitative analyses of offensive performance in this sport. Objective. To analyze 164 offensive plays by the Argentine men’s national team during the 2022 International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Copa América to determine the spatiotemporal progression and the decline in intra-match offensive performance. Materials and Methods. Each play was reconstructed with its progression vector, its finishing zone, and its absolute game minute. Multivariate logistic regression models and weighted trend analysis (Cochran–Armitage) were applied to examine the relationship between these variables and the offensive outcome (shot on-target and goal). Results. Plays originating from high-pressure recovery showed a favorable trend toward shooting on-target. The goal rate showed an empirical decline from 26.1% in the 6th–10th minutes to 6.7% in the final minutes, without reaching statistical significance. Conclusions. The results of this study suggest that the magnitude of the offensive progression vector and offensive effectiveness show an asymmetry toward the right side, as well as a pattern consistent with an intra-match decline toward the end of games. These variables appear to influence the offensive performance of the Argentine men’s national blind football (F5) in the 2022 Copa América. These findings provide one of the first integrated vector analyses of offensive performance in F5 and propose metrics applicable to coaching staff, the design of specific training programs, and the functional assessment of athletes with visual impairments; therefore, further studies are needed to analyze these metrics in different official competitions and to account for various competitive levels. It is recommended to design training exercises focused on recovery under high pressure near the right side of the offensive zone and maintain the intensity of play in the final minutes of the game. The relationship between athletes and equipment in the sport of speed skating is critical. A speed skater’s equipment, namely their skates, is an integral part of a dynamic system that facilitates the translation of human motion to on-ice racing. Although it is common practice to customize the setup of long track speed skates, empirical evidence supporting best practices is relatively undocumented. The exploratory nature of this investigation was intended to address two purposes: (i) profiling skate metrics in a competitive cohort of long track speed skaters and (ii) exploring the association between skate metrics and on-ice race times. Two databases were populated for the purpose of analysis: one for skate metrics and another for on-ice race times. Data were linked to the skates of thirty-one provincial-level long track speed skaters (male n = 19; female n = 12). The skate metrics database was populated by a single equipment technician, trained using measurement protocols consistent with the industry’s standards, and the metrics were grouped into three categories: (i) boot dimensions (n = 4), (ii) blade dimensions (n = 7), and (iii) skate setup (n = 5). The on-ice race time database was populated and collated using a secondary data source and included an aggregate time based on the mean of the three fastest race times per athlete by distance (500 m, 1000 m, and 1500 m) collected from the 2019–2023 seasons. Statistical analyses were conducted within and across the databases to (i) determine the variation in skate metrics and race times across athletes, and (ii) explore the association between skate metrics and race times. Analysis of the skate metrics database revealed coefficients of variance (CVs) for all metrics including the following: boot dimensions (6.95–8.69%), blade dimensions (0.00–14.24%), and skate setup metrics (8.63–17.05%). Of significant interest were large CVs for pivot point position (14.54%) and blade offset (8.63–17.05%), suggesting inconsistency and a potential lack of understanding of the impact of skate setup on performance. No significant correlations were revealed between skate setup metrics and race times. Across the three race distances, regression models were not statistically significant and explained only a small proportion of variance, highlighting the limited understanding between skate setup metrics and race times in practice. Profiling skate metrics and understanding their relationship with race times provides equipment technicians, coaches, and athletes with a baseline to inform decisions when customizing skate setup. This study explored parental concerns regarding their sons’ experiences in a professional football academy, using a case study methodology over a twelve-year period. Drawing on over 60 interviews with parenting pairs, the research identified that concerns were shaped by internal (e.g., personal beliefs), semi-internal (e.g., peer influence, agent input), and external (e.g., social media, educational trends) information sources. These sources often led to misaligned expectations between parents and the academy. The findings highlighted the prevalence of misinformation. In response, a series of targeted interventions were implemented, including structured communication strategies, shared mental models (SMMs), and a refined parent–academy code of conduct. These changes facilitated more integrated parent–athlete–coach relationships and improved clarity around developmental processes. Although causality cannot be established, the frequency of parental complaints decreased over time. This study emphasizes the need for academies to proactively engage parents as key stakeholders through clear, consistent, and evidence-informed communication, ultimately supporting a more coherent developmental experience for athletes. These findings have broad implications for talent development environments aiming to balance athlete and parent welfare with high-performance goals. Full article

The purpose of this study is to provide data-driven training optimization tools for indoor rowing coaches and athletes, provide quantitative reference for training monitoring and performance analysis in a controllable environment, and help improve the scientific level of competitive performance and training management. To address the absence of quantitative analysis regarding the relationship between rowing power load and competition time during pre-competition training, this study introduces a sequential attention pooling with monotonic constraints (SAP-MC) to systematically analyze data from the rowing power sensor system. The results show that the model effectively captures the negative correlation between power output and competition time. Specifically, when the average power is increased from 230 W to 290 W, the competition time is reduced from 435.2 s to 409.6 s, resulting in a significant reduction of 25.6 s (p < 0.001). When the coefficient of variation of power output (cv_power) increased from 0.08 to 0.18, the competition time was prolonged by 14.2 s (p < 0.01). In addition, when the acute-chronic load ratio (ACWR) exceeds 1.2, compared with the optimal range (0.9–1.1), the competition time is increased by about 6.8 s (p < 0.05). The overall analysis shows that the average power output and power stability are the most critical variables affecting the change of competition time, followed by training load balance and segmented pace optimization. The research results validate the scientific significance of power monitoring and provide a reference for quantitatively analyzing the correlation between training load and race time in a controlled indoor rowing training environment. In this study, we propose a general mathematical modelling framework based on the characteristics of elite athletes’ movements in the touch rugby matches to investigate the dynamic relationship between physical workload and injury risk over time. Our framework extends the Cox-based model in the context of touch rugby by incorporating a time-scaling component and cluster-specific heterogeneity simultaneously. In addition, we allow for the inclusion of covariates (e.g., velocity variation) to capture their effects. We applied our model to high-frequency wearable sensor data collected from 27 elite athletes (15 men and 12 women). The empirical study results show that our model, time-scaled frailty model (TSFM), demonstrates better goodness-of-fit than traditional frailty and Andersen–Gill models. The results reveal that higher velocity variation, particularly during high-intensity phases, and longer time of continuous exposure to the workload spike state significantly increased overload risk, ultimately resulting in injury. It also highlights the importance of individual differences, even under the same exercise intensity. These insights provide coaches with an evidence-based framework for athlete monitoring, allowing for more personalized training loads, tactical deployment, and injury prevention strategies in elite touch rugby environments. Bullying and victimization are prevalent in school and sport settings, yet they are rarely examined concurrently. This study explored the relationships between school and sport bullying among youth athletes, assessing whether demographic and sport-related factors are associated with these behaviors across contexts. Participants included 189 youth athletes (aged 8–15 years) from Central Macedonia, Northern Greece. They completed a demographic survey and the Bullying and Victimization Questionnaire twice, assessing both school and sport environments. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) evaluated the effects of gender, educational level, sport type, and contact classification, followed by regression analyses. Results showed that educational level yielded a significant multivariate effect, with secondary school students reporting higher involvement in school bullying, sport bullying, and sport victimization. Crucially, regression analyses revealed that school-context bullying and victimization were the strongest factors associated with corresponding behaviors in sports. Additionally, team sport participation was associated with sport victimization, while demographic factors were related to school bullying perpetration. These findings demonstrate the interconnected nature of bullying between school and sport environments, emphasizing the critical need for coordinated, multi-contextual prevention strategies among educators and coaches. The aim of this study was to investigate older adults’ engagement in sport through the lens of the Positive Development in Sport (PDS), a framework aimed at fostering human growth in sport environments. This qualitative study involved 80 older athletes (M = 71.91 years, SD = 7.91; 45 women) engaged in regular sport practice and four experienced coaches (37–57-years-old). Data was collected across multiple contexts: brief in-person individual or small-group interviews during a competitive event; five in-person focus groups; and individual interviews. Data was analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Findings revealed a central theme, autonomy to engage in sport, supported by three subthemes: competence and confidence, health, and setting priorities. Participants described sport as a meaningful component of their identity, with sustained engagement driven by intrinsic motivation and harmonious passion. They reported increased self-awareness, intentional health management, and the ability to balance sport participation with other life domains, highlighting positive implications for mental health. Coaches who actively supported athletes’ psychological needs played a key role in fostering autonomy and personal development. Participants also emphasized the importance of inclusive relationships and pedagogical strategies tailored to older athletes’ goals and lived experiences. The findings suggest that sport in older adulthood can be a context for personal growth and mental health development. Full article

This study aims to investigate the gender differences in lower limb strength among Chinese national rugby team athletes, as well as the relationship between these variables. Twenty-seven athletes underwent countermovement jump (CMJ) and one-repetition maximum (1RM) squat tests, with relative strength calculated through bodyweight normalization. Results showed that male athletes had significantly higher CMJ height (p = 0.005) and absolute squat 1RM values (p < 0.001) compared to female athletes; male and female athletes showed significant differences in relative strength (p < 0.001). Correlation analysis indicated a positive relationship between CMJ height and absolute squat strength (p = 0.002), but no significant association with relative strength. The findings suggest a significant sex-based disparity in absolute lower limb strength among athletes of the Chinese national rugby team, with relative strength levels also exhibiting variations. When developing training programs, coaches and athletes should consider gender-specific differences in absolute strength. Full article

Playing sports remains one of the most common avenues for youth engagement in physical activity. Yet mental health challenges, such as performance anxiety, depressive symptoms, reduced motivation, and burnout, place many young athletes at risk. As key mediators of sport participation, coaches’ roles are often underscored in recognizing shifts in athlete motivation, behavior, or well-being. Gaining better insight into athlete mental health status may enable coaches to provide timely support and strengthen athlete and team well-being. In this study protocol, we employ a mixed-methods design, evaluating the effectiveness of an AI-augmented mobile application (i.e., ThriveNudge) in promoting the mental health of youth athletes. ThriveNudge helps coaches monitor athlete mental health, flag mood disruptions, and practice supportive communication via simulated chats. A target sample of four interscholastic teams (with athletes aged 14–18 years) and their head coaches will be recruited. Teams will be cluster-randomized to either the intervention condition (n = 2), receiving pre-season training to implement ThriveNudge, or to a waitlist control condition (n = 2). Primary outcomes, including athlete burnout, motivation, coach–athlete relationships, and sport enjoyment, will be measured using psychometric scales administered online. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted with coaches and athletes in the experimental group to collect qualitative data on user interface and user experience. We hypothesize that teams using ThriveNudge will report lower athlete anxiety and burnout, higher intrinsic motivation and enjoyment, and stronger coach–athlete relationships than athletes in control teams. We aim to provide a scalable and accessible digital platform that safeguards youth mental health. Full article

Background: Grit is often celebrated as a predictor of youth success in sport, but little is known about how it develops over time through social and relational contexts. This study explores how grit forms among youth powerlifters through two developmental trajectories: an externally driven pathway shaped by structured adversity (Outside-In) and an internally driven pathway fueled by self-motivation (Inside-Out). Methods: This analytical autoethnographic study draws on multi-year coaching journals, field notes, and reflective narratives involving four Malaysian youth athletes. Through thematic coding and narrative synthesis, key developmental patterns were identified, and a dual-pathway conceptual model was constructed. Results: The findings revealed that youth from lower-autonomy backgrounds often developed grit through coach-led discipline and adversity (Outside-In), while others showed early self-regulation and purpose-driven persistence (Inside-Out). Both pathways could converge toward internalized grit. The coach–athlete relationship was central in mediating this growth. Some youths later turned outward to uplift others, indicating broader developmental impacts. Conclusions: Grit in youth sport is a socially embedded process. The Dual Pathway Model offers a framework for coaches and educators to cultivate perseverance in diverse youth through both relational support and autonomy development. Full article

This study aims to report the first Latvian version of the RESTQ-76, focusing on its internal validity, reliability, structural validity, and the relationships between the factors of the questionnaire. A total of 394 athletes (225 men and 169 women), aged 18–30 years (average age = 21, SD = 1.65), participated in the study. They were recruited from various sports clubs and universities. The RESTQ-76 was translated into Latvian through a forward-backward translation process to ensure accuracy of cultural relevance. To examine the questionnaire’s structure, principal component analysis (PCA) was performed. This analysis revealed a stable four-factor model comprising 18 scales, with acceptable fit indices (RMSEA = 0.089, CFI = 0.914, TLI = 0.896, NFI = 0.889), indicating good model fit. The psychometric validity of the Latvian version is supported by the original, indicating it is appropriate for use in sports settings throughout Latvia. As research on training load and recovery continues to expand, tools like the RESTQ-76 are becoming increasingly important. Curve Sprint Ability as an Indicator of Neuromuscular Function and Physical Fitness in Youth Soccer Players: Comparative Insights from U14 and U16 Groups

Background and Objectives: In modern soccer, players frequently perform curved sprinting (CS) actions that combine speed, agility, and neuromuscular control, highlighting the importance of assessing CS performance in youth athletes. This study aimed to investigate age-related differences in CS performance and its relationship with key components of physical fitness—including aerobic capacity, vertical jump height, and agility-based field tests—in U14 and U16 male soccer players. Materials and Methods: A total of 76 registered players participated, evenly divided between the two age groups. Statistical analyses included t-tests, correlation, and regression modeling to determine key predictors of curve-sprint performance. Results: U16 players showed significant between-group differences, with faster CS times on both the good and weak sides (p < 0.001, d = 0.93–1.08), as well as superior performance in the countermovement jump (p < 0.001, d = 1.12), Illinois Agility Test (p < 0.01, d = 0.70), and 5-0-5 change-of-direction (COD) test (p < 0.01, d = 0.74). Significant negative correlations were found between CMJ height and CS times (r = –0.40 to –0.73), indicating that greater explosive power was associated with better CS performance. Moderate to very strong positive correlations were observed between CS and agility measures (r = 0.43 to 0.79), particularly in the U16 group, whereas VO2max showed no meaningful relationship with CS performance (r = –0.16 to –0.30, p > 0.05). Conclusions: These results suggest that CS may serve as an indicator of neuromuscular power and agility, both of which improve with age. From a practical perspective, regular curve-sprint assessments and multidirectional drills may support talent development by helping coaches monitor neuromuscular efficiency and movement coordination in young players. Female participation in NCAA athletics has grown significantly since the passage of Title IX—the 1972 U.S. federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in educational programs and activities receiving federal funding—yet much of the existing research continues to focus on male athletes, leaving important gaps in our understanding of women’s experiences in collegiate sports. One underexamined area with important public health implications is the role of coach–athlete relationships in shaping female athletes’ mental health, access to resources, and overall collegiate experience. This exploratory study draws on in-depth interviews with 19 former female NCAA athletes to examine how their relationships with coaches influenced their athletic careers, mental health, and perceptions of support. Participants represented a range of sports and competitive levels, allowing for variation in experiences across contexts. Findings reveal that coach–athlete relationships are not only central to performance and motivation but also serve as key sources of emotional, social, and material support—or, in some cases, stress and disengagement. The quality and impact of these relationships were shaped by competitive pressures, team dynamics, and institutional expectations. This study underscores the importance of relational context in understanding the broader landscape of female NCAA athletes’ experiences and suggests that coach–athlete dynamics merit greater attention in both research and athletic program development. These findings underscore the relevance of coach–athlete dynamics as a public health concern, particularly in relation to mental health and emotional well-being in competitive sports environments. Supporting healthier relational cultures in collegiate athletics is essential for promoting positive health outcomes among female student-athletes. Full article
