Carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) offer excellent in-plane mechanical performance, but their relatively low interlaminar fracture toughness makes them vulnerable to delamination, particularly around intralaminar discontinuities such as resin-rich regions or fiber gaps. This study investigates the effectiveness of polyamide (PA) mesh inserts in improving interlaminar toughness and suppressing delamination in CFRP laminates with such features. Two PA mesh configurations were evaluated: a fully embedded continuous layer and a 20 mm cut mesh strip placed between continuous and discontinuous plies near critical regions. Fracture toughness tests showed that PA mesh insertion improved interlaminar toughness approximately 2.4-fold compared to neat CFRP, primarily due to a mechanical interlocking mechanism that disrupts crack propagation and enhances energy dissipation. Uniaxial tensile tests with digital image correlation revealed that while initial matrix cracking occurred at similar stress levels, the stress at which complete delamination occurred was approximately 60% higher in specimens with a 20 mm mesh and up to 92% higher in specimens with fully embedded mesh. The fully embedded mesh provided consistent delamination resistance across the laminate, while the 20 mm insert localized strain redistribution and preserved global mechanical performance. These findings demonstrate that PA mesh is an effective interleaving material for enhancing damage tolerance in CFRP laminates with internal discontinuities. Full article

The increasing need for materials that are both lightweight and strong in the aerospace and automotive sectors has driven the extensive use of composite sandwich structures. This study examines the impact response of honeycomb sandwich composites fabricated using the vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) technique. Two configurations were analyzed, namely carbon–honeycomb–carbon (CHC) and carbon–Kevlar–honeycomb–Kevlar–carbon (CKHKC), to assess the effect of Kevlar reinforcement on impact resistance. Charpy impact testing was conducted to evaluate energy absorption, revealing that CKHKC composites exhibited significantly superior impact resistance compared to CHC composites. The CKHKC composite achieved an average impact strength of 70.501 KJ/m2, which is approximately 73.8% higher than the 40.570 KJ/m2 recorded for CHC. This improvement is attributed to Kevlar’s superior toughness and energy dissipation capabilities. A comparative assessment of impact energy absorption further highlights the advantages of hybrid Kevlar–carbon fiber composites, making them highly suitable for applications requiring enhanced impact performance. These findings provide valuable insights into the design and optimization of high-performance honeycomb sandwich structures for impact-critical environments. Full article

In engineering practice, liquid droplet impingement typically occurs at an oblique angle relative to the target surface, yet the influence of impact orientation on damage outcomes remains contentious and exhibits target-material dependency. In this paper, a typical single-waterjet-generating technique is applied to liquid impact tests on a unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminate, with special focus on the effects of the impingement angle and the fiber orientation. Finite-element simulation is employed to help reveal the failure mechanism of oblique impacts. The results show that, in most cases, the damage caused by a 15° oblique impact is slightly larger than that of a normal impact, while the increase amplitude varies with different impact speeds. Resin removal is more prone to occur when the projection of the waterjet velocity on the impact surface is perpendicular (marked as the fiber orientation PE) rather than parallel (marked as the fiber orientation PA) to the fiber direction of the top layer. A PE fiber orientation can lead to mass material peeling in comparison with PA, and the damage range is even much larger than for a normal impact. The underlying mechanism can be attributed to the increased lateral jet-particle velocity and resultant shear stress along the impact projection direction. The distinct damage modes observed on the CFRP laminate with the different fiber orientations PE and PA originate from the asymmetric tensile properties in the longitudinal/transverse directions of laminates coupled with dissimilar fiber–matrix interfacial characteristics. A theoretical model for the surface damage area under a single-jet impact was established through experimental data fitting based on a modified water-hammer pressure contact-radius formulation. The model quantitatively characterizes the influence of critical parameters, including the jet velocity, diameter, and impact angle, on the central area of the surface failure ring. Full article

The insulating rod of aramid fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composites (AFRP) is an important component of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). Under complex working conditions, the high temperature caused by voltage, current, and external climate change becomes one of the important factors that aggravate the interface degradation between aramid fiber (AF) and epoxy resin (EP). In this paper, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation software is used to study the effect of temperature on the interfacial properties of AF/EP. At the same time, the mechanism of improving the interfacial properties of three nanoparticles with different properties (insulator Al2O3, semiconductor ZnO, and conductor carbon nanotube (CNT)) is explored. The results show that the increase in temperature will greatly reduce the interfacial van der Waals force, thereby reducing the interfacial binding energy between AF and EP, making the interfacial wettability worse. Furthermore, the addition of the three fillers can improve the interfacial adhesion of the composite material. Among them, Al2O3 and CNT maintain a large dipole moment at high temperature, making the van der Waals force more stable and the adhesion performance attenuation less. The Mulliken charge and energy gap of Al2O3 and ZnO decrease slightly with temperature but are still higher than AF, which is conducive to maintaining good interfacial insulation performance. In recent times, fiber reinforced polymer composite materials have become more popular due to their remarkable features such as high specific strength, high stiffness and durability. Particularly, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composites are one of the most prominent materials used in the field of transportation and building engineering, replacing conventional materials due to their attractive properties as mentioned. In this work, a CFRP laminate is fabricated with carbon fiber mats and epoxy by a hand layup technique. Alumina (Al2O3) micro particles are used as a filler material, mixed with epoxy at different weight fractions of 0% to 4% during the fabrication of CFRP laminates. The important objective of the study is to investigate the influence of alumina micro particles on the mechanical performance of the laminates through characterization for various physical and mechanical properties. It is revealed from the results of study that the mass density of the laminates steadily increased with the quantity of alumina micro particles added and subsequently, the porosity of the laminates is reduced significantly. The SEM micrograph confirmed the constituents of the laminate and uniform distribution of Al2O3 micro particles with no significant agglomeration. The hardness of the CFRP laminates increased significantly for about 60% with an increase in weight % of Al2O3 from 0% to 4%, whereas the water gain % gradually drops from 0 to 2%, after which a substantial rise is observed for 3 to 4%. The improved interlocking due to the addition of filler material reduced the voids in the interfaces and thereby resist the absorption of water and in turn reduced the plasticity of the resin too. Tensile, flexural and inter-laminar shear strengths of the CFRP laminate were improved appreciably with the addition of alumina particles through extended grain boundary and enhanced interfacial bonding between the fibers, epoxy and alumina particles, except at 1 and 3 wt.% of Al2O3, which may be due to the pooling of alumina particles within the matrix. Inclusion of hard alumina particles resulted in a significant drop in impact strength due to appreciable reduction in softness of the core region of the laminates. Full article

The growing application of carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs) in construction opens new possibilities for replacing traditional materials such as steel, particularly in strengthening and retrofitting concrete structures. CFRP materials offer notable advantages, including high tensile strength, low self-weight, corrosion resistance, and the ability to be tailored to complex geometries. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current technologies used to strengthen concrete columns, with a particular focus on the application of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tubes in composite column systems. The manufacturing processes of FRP composites are discussed, emphasizing the influence of resin types and fabrication methods on the mechanical properties and durability of composite elements. This review also analyzes how factors such as fiber type, orientation, thickness, and application method affect the load-bearing capacity of both newly constructed and retrofitted damaged concrete elements. Furthermore, the paper identifies research gaps concerning the use of perforated CFRP tubes as internal reinforcement components. Considering the increasing interest in innovative column strengthening methods, this paper highlights future research directions, particularly the application of perforated CFRP tubes combined with external composite strengthening and self-compacting concrete (SCC). In carbon-fiber-reinforced composites, hydroxyl and carboxyl groups are formed on the carbon fiber surface as a result of the oxidation process applied to the fibers. These groups strengthen the interfacial bond between the fibers and the epoxy resin. In addition, the silanization process chemically bonds amino and glycidyl groups to the fiber surface, further improving adhesion and thus optimizing the performance of the joint. In light of this, the primary objective of the present study is to optimize the performance of adhesive joints by applying oxidation and silane modifications to the fibers added to the adhesive and the bonded metal materials. In this study, carbon fibers underwent oxidation treatment for 5, 10, and 20 min, followed by silanization with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) silane agents. Additionally, the surfaces of the bonded aluminum materials were subjected to a 10 min oxidation process, followed by silanization with APTES and GPTMS silane agents. The tensile test performance of single-lap joints, bonded using chemically surface-treated aluminum and composite adhesives containing 2 wt.% chemically treated carbon fibers, was experimentally investigated. According to the contact angle measurement results obtained in this study, aluminum materials subjected to oxidation treatment exhibited superhydrophilic behavior, whereas materials subjected to silanization displayed hydrophilic behavior. A similar trend was observed in the fibers. The performance of adhesive joints increased by approximately 14% when only the aluminum materials underwent oxidation treatment. Moreover, the addition of 2 wt.% carbon fibers to the adhesive enhanced the joint performance by approximately 31%. However, when oxidation treatments of varying durations were applied to both the aluminum materials and the fibers, the joint performance improved by approximately 35% to 40%. When silanization treatments were applied in addition to the oxidation treatments on aluminum and fiber surfaces, the joint performance increased by approximately 68% to 70%. These findings were corroborated through analyses performed using 3D profilometry and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) imaging. Full article

Titanium alloy/carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (TA1/CFRP) laminates, representing the latest fourth generation of fiber metal laminates (FMLs), is a kind of high-performance composite material. However, the fragility of the fiber/resin and metal/resin interface layers in these composites directly impacts their mechanical properties. To enhance these properties, this paper investigates the preparation process of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-reinforced ultra-thin TA1/CFRP laminates and explores the impact of MWCNT content on the interlayer properties of these ultra-thin TA1/CFRP laminates. Initially, the challenge of dispersing carbon nanotubes using ultrasonic dispersion devices and dispersants was addressed. Vacuum-curing pressure studies revealed minimal overflow at 0.8 bar vacuum. Subsequently, the impact of MWCNT content on interlayer properties was investigated. The results indicated a significant increase in interlayer shear strength and interlayer fracture toughness with MWCNT additions at 0.5 wt% and 0.75 wt%, whereas the interlayer properties decreased at 1.0 wt% MWCNT. Fracture morphology analysis revealed that MWCNT content exceeding 0.75 wt% led to agglomeration, resulting in resin cavity formation and stress concentration. Full article

Fiber Orientation Effects in CFRP Milling: Multiscale Characterization of Cutting Dynamics, Surface Integrity, and Damage Mechanisms

During the machining of unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (UD-CFRPs), their anisotropic characteristics and the complex cutting conditions often lead to defects such as delamination, burrs, and surface/subsurface damage. This study systematically investigates the effects of different fiber orientation angles (0°, 45°, 90°, and 135°) on cutting force, chip formation, stress distribution, and damage characteristics using a coupled macro–micro finite element model. The model successfully captures key microscopic failure mechanisms, such as fiber breakage, resin cracking, and fiber–matrix interface debonding, by integrating the anisotropic mechanical properties and heterogeneous microstructure of UD-CFRPs, thereby more realistically replicating the actual machining process. The cutting speed is kept constant at 480 mm/s. Experimental validation using T700S/J-133 laminates (with a 70% fiber volume fraction) shows that, on a macro scale, the cutting force varies non-monotonically with the fiber orientation angle, following the order of 0° < 45° < 135° < 90°. The experimental values are 24.8 N/mm < 35.8 N/mm < 36.4 N/mm < 44.1 N/mm, and the simulation values are 22.9 N/mm < 33.2 N/mm < 32.7 N/mm < 42.6 N/mm. The maximum values occur at 90° (44.1 N/mm, 42.6 N/mm), while the minimum values occur at 0° (24.8 N/mm, 22.9 N/mm). The chip morphology significantly changes with fiber orientation: 0° produces strip-shaped chips, 45° forms block-shaped chips, 90° results in particle-shaped chips, and 135° produces fragmented chips. On a micro scale, the microscopic morphology of the chips and the surface damage characteristics also exhibit gradient variations consistent with the experimental results. The developed model demonstrates high accuracy in predicting damage mechanisms and material removal behavior, providing a theoretical basis for optimizing CFRP machining parameters. Full article

Liquid hydrogen (LH2) storage using carbon-fiber-reinforced composite pressure vessels is facing increasing demands in aerospace engineering. However, hydrogen permeation in epoxy resin matrixes seriously jeopardizes the function and safety of the cryogenic vessels, and the micro-behavior of hydrogen permeation in epoxy resins remains mysterious. This study performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the hydrogen molecule permeation behaviors in two types of epoxy resin systems, with similar epoxy reins of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) and different curing agents, i.e., 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) and polypropylene glycol bis(2-aminopropyl ether) (PEA). The influencing factors, including the cross-linking degrees and temperatures, on hydrogen permeation were analyzed. It was revealed that increased cross-linking degrees enhance the tortuosity of hydrogen diffusion pathways, thereby inhibiting permeation. The adsorption characteristics demonstrated high sensitivity to temperature variations, leading to intensified hydrogen permeation at low temperatures. By triggering defects in the epoxy resin systems by uniaxial tensile simulation, high consistency between the simulation results and the results from helium permeability experiments can be achieved due to the micro-defects in the simulation model that are more realistic in practical materials. The findings provide theoretical insights into micro-scale permeation behavior and facilitate the development of high-performance epoxy resins in liquid hydrogen storage. Full article

Composite rotors, attributing to their leveraging characteristics of the light weight, high strength, high rigidity, corrosion resistance, and low noise, can significantly reduce the moment of inertia and enhance equipment operational efficiency. Using carbon fiber/glass fiber hybrid-reinforced resin–matrix composites as the rotor base material, the radial stability of a rotor can be effectively increased by regulating the fiber volume content. Meanwhile, the introduction of glass fiber not only enables the transition between the metal hub and composite rim but also optimizes the cost structure of the composite system, overcoming the economic bottleneck of single carbon fiber-reinforced resin–matrix composite rotors. This paper employs the finite element method to analyze a three-dimensional model of a composite rotor, investigating the performance of its metal hub and hybrid-reinforced resin–matrix composite rim. According to the radial stress distribution of the composite rotor during operation, the mixing ratio of carbon fiber/glass fiber is adjusted. The high-speed rotation condition of the composite rotor at 18,000 revolutions per minute is simulated to verify its safety and reliability. Full article

This paper presents a novel method for manufacturing molds using polymeric acrylic resin combined with aluminum trihydrate material (commercially known as DuPont Corian materials), offering a potential alternative with reduced complexity and cost. The study investigates the influence of various milling parameters, such as tool speed, tool type, feed rate, and depth of cut on the mechanical properties and surface finish of the molds. Also, laminating tests are conducted; results indicate that laminating tools produced through this method achieve competitive mechanical performance, including a hard, smooth surface with low roughness, making them viable candidates for industrial use. The proposed approach is particularly beneficial in terms of reducing machining time and overall costs while maintaining the necessary precision and durability for high-performance applications. This method, therefore, represents a promising solution for manufacturers seeking to optimize mold production processes in the composite materials industry. Full article

This study investigates the use of carbonized hemp fiber (CHF) as a reinforcement for phenol resorcinol formaldehyde (PRF)-based fiber composites. The hemp fiber was carbonized slowly up to 1000 °C under N2 with a yield of 18%. Compression-molded composites were prepared with CHF and then compared to hemp (HF) and wood fiber (WF) at 0 to 50% loading with PRF resin. The flow characteristics of the uncured composites were determined by dynamic rheology and showed pseudoplastic behavior; the composites show promise as extrudable materials. The flexural strength of the HF composites (69 MPa for 40% HF) was higher than the CHF composites. The thermal stability of the composites was determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and the CHF composites were more stable than the HF and WF composites. Carbonization was shown to enhance both the thermal stability and the hydrophobicity of the composites, which is expected to lead to less susceptibility to weathering and biological attack. Formulations of 50% WF, 50% CHF, and 30% HF fiber loadings with PRF were able to be extruded into rods. Extruded CHF composites showed better mechanical properties than the HF and WF composites. This study addresses the need for thermomechanically robust materials for high-temperature environments by investigating fabric-reinforced composites produced through polymer infiltration and thermal pressing using phenol-formaldehyde (PF) and epoxy (ER) resins. Experimental validation was required due to the lack of comparative data across different textile reinforcements under identical conditions. Seven technical fabrics—carbon, aramid, basalt, silica, fiberglass, asbestos, and a carbon/aramid hybrid—were used as reinforcements. Mechanical testing revealed that carbon- and hybrid fiber composites exhibited the highest tensile (up to 465 MPa) and compressive strengths (up to 301 MPa), particularly when combined with ER. Conversely, the use of PF generally resulted in a 30–50% reduction in mechanical strength. However, PF-based composites demonstrated superior thermal resistance, with the silica/PF combination showing the lowest back-face temperature (401 °C), up to 37% lower than other pairings. Thermal conductivity ranged from 0.041 to 0.51 W/m·K, with PF-based systems offering 6–12% lower values on average compared to ER-based analogs. Morphological analysis confirmed better interfacial bonding in ER composites, while PF systems showed higher structural integrity under thermal loading. Overall, the results emphasize the trade-offs between mechanical strength and thermal protection depending on the fabric–resin combination. Among all variants, the silica fabric with PF demonstrated the most balanced performance, making it a promising candidate for thermomechanical applications. Full article

The use of composite materials in aerospace structures has led to significant weight reductions and improved performance. However, their behavior under low-energy impact remains a critical concern due to the potential initiation of barely visible damage. This study investigates the crack initiation mechanisms in composite airfoil profiles subjected to low-energy impact, simulating real-world scenarios such as hail or bird strikes. Two types of airfoil profiles were fabricated using bidirectional carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) with epoxy resin and tested under ASTM D7136 impact conditions. Tensile tests following ASTM D3039 were conducted to assess post-impact mechanical behavior. The damage patterns were analyzed using high-resolution microscopy and non-destructive inspection techniques. Results revealed that damage severity and propagation depend on impact energy levels and airfoil geometry, with SC(2)-0714 exhibiting better impact resistance than GOE777-IL. Microscopic analysis confirmed that delamination initiated at 45° fiber orientations, expanding along interlaminar regions, while airfoil curvature influenced the impact energy dissipation.
