Fish coloration plays an important role in reproduction and camouflage, yet capturing color variation under field conditions remains challenging. We present a standardized, semi-automated protocol for measuring body coloration in the popular model fish threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Individuals are photographed in a controlled light box within minutes of capture, and color is sampled from eight anatomically defined standard sites in human-perception-based CIELAB space. Analyses combine univariate color metrics, multivariate statistics, and the ΔE* perceptual difference index to detect subtle shifts in hue and brightness. Validation on pre-spawning fish shows the method reliably distinguishes males and females well before full breeding colors develop. Although it currently omits ultraviolet signals and fine-scale patterning, the approach scales efficiently to large sample sizes and varying lighting conditions, making it well suited for population-level surveys of camouflage dynamics, sexual dimorphism, and environmental influences on coloration in sticklebacks. Background: Chronic stress in childhood and adolescence leads to excessive cortisol secretion, adipokines production and obesity with all the negative mental and physical effects on the health of individuals and adulthood. Objectives: The aim of the present non-randomized controlled trial was to investigate the effect of a stress management protocol with diaphragmatic breathing (DB) and physiotherapy exercise on stress, body composition, cardiorespiratory and metabolic markers of children and adolescents with morbid obesity. Methods: The study included 31 children and adolescents (5–18 years old) with morbid obesity (22 in the intervention arm and 9 controls). All participants completed anxiety questionnaires and a self-perception scale. Forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), blood pressure (BP) and SpO2 were measured. Fasting glucose, uric acid, triglycerides, HbA1c, (AST/SGOT), (ALT/SGPT), HDL, LDL, insulin, ACTH, cortisol, HOMA-IR, 17-OH, S-DHEA, SHBG were assessed, and anthropometric measurements were also performed. Results: In the intervention group, 4 months after the treatment, an improvement was noted in the BMI, BMI z-score, waist-to-height ratio, FEV1, SpO2, pulse and systolic BP. HDL increased, ALT/SGPT and insulin resistance improved. Positive changes were observed in temporary and permanent stress and self-esteem of children in the intervention group, including anxiety, self-perception, physical appearance, etc. Conclusions: A combined exercise and DB protocol has a positive effect on stress, by improving body composition, reducing insulin resistance, and ameliorating physical and mental health and quality of life of pediatric patients with morbid obesity. This story began half a century ago with the discovery of an unusually high presence of tryptophan (Trp, W) in transthyretin (TTR), one of the three carrier proteins of thyroid hormones. With the Trp-rich retinol-binding protein (RBP), TTR forms a plasma complex implicated in the delivery of retinoid compounds to body tissues. W has the lowest concentration among all AAs involved in the sequencing of human body proteins. The present review proposes molecular maps focusing on the ratio of W/AA residues found in the sequence of proteins involved in immune events, allowing us to ascribe the guidance of inflammatory processes as fully under the influence of W. Under the control of cytokine stimulation, plasma biomarkers of protein nutritional status work in concert with major acute-phase reactants (APRs) and with carrier proteins to release, in a free and active form, their W and hormonal ligands, interacting to generate hot spots affecting the course of acute stress disorders. The prognostic inflammatory and nutritional index (PINI) scoring formula contributes to identifying the respective roles played by each of the components prevailing during the progression of the disease. Glucagon demonstrates ambivalent properties, remaining passive under steady-state conditions while displaying stronger effects after cytokine activation. In developing countries, inappropriate weaning periods lead to toddlers eating W-deficient cereals as a staple, causing a dramatic reduction in the levels of W-rich biomarkers in plasma, constituting a novel nutritional deficiency at the global scale. Appropriate counseling should be set up using W implementations to cover the weaning period and extended until school age. In adult and elderly subjects, the helpful immune protections provided by W may be hindered by the surge in harmful catabolites with the occurrence of chronic complications, which can have a significant public health impact but lack the uncontrolled surges in PINI observed in young infants and teenagers. Biomarkers of neurodegenerative and neoplastic disorders measured in elderly patients indicate the slow-moving elevation of APRs due to rampant degradation processes. Full article

Wheat is one of the important grain crops, and spike counting is crucial for predicting spike yield. However, in complex farmland environments, the wheat body scale has huge differences, its color is highly similar to the background, and wheat ears often overlap with each other, which makes wheat ear detection work face a lot of challenges. At the same time, the increasing demand for high accuracy and fast response in wheat spike detection has led to the need for models to be lightweight function with reduced the hardware costs. Therefore, this study proposes a lightweight wheat ear detection model, CML-RTDETR, for efficient and accurate detection of wheat ears in real complex farmland environments. In the model construction, the lightweight network CSPDarknet is firstly introduced as the backbone network of CML-RTDETR to enhance the feature extraction efficiency. In addition, the FM module is cleverly introduced to modify the bottleneck layer in the C2f component, and hybrid feature extraction is realized by spatial and frequency domain splicing to enhance the feature extraction capability of wheat to be tested in complex scenes. Secondly, to improve the model’s detection capability for targets of different scales, a multi-scale feature enhancement pyramid (MFEP) is designed, consisting of GHSDConv, for efficiently obtaining low-level detail information and CSPDWOK for constructing a multi-scale semantic fusion structure. Finally, channel pruning based on Layer-Adaptive Magnitude Pruning (LAMP) scoring is performed to reduce model parameters and runtime memory. The experimental results on the GWHD2021 dataset show that the AP50 of CML-RTDETR reaches 90.5%, which is an improvement of 1.2% compared to the baseline RTDETR-R18 model. Meanwhile, the parameters and GFLOPs have been decreased to 11.03 M and 37.8 G, respectively, resulting in a reduction of 42% and 34%, respectively. Finally, the real-time frame rate reaches 73 fps, significantly achieving parameter simplification and speed improvement. Full article

The contamination of water bodies by industrial dyes poses a significant environmental challenge on a global scale. Conventional wastewater treatment methods often suffer from limitations related to high cost, limited efficiency, and potential secondary environmental impacts. Recent advances in photocatalytic technologies have highlighted the potential of metal sulfide-based photocatalysts, particularly those synthesized through environmentally friendly, plant-mediated approaches, as promising alternatives for efficient and sustainable dye degradation. However, despite their promising potential, metal sulfide photocatalysts often suffer from limitations such as photocorrosion, low stability under irradiation, and rapid recombination of charge carriers, which restrict their long-term applicability. In light of these challenges, this review provides a comprehensive examination of the physicochemical characteristics, synthetic strategies, and photocatalytic applications of metal sulfides. Particular emphasis is placed on green synthesis routes employing plant-derived extracts, which offer environmentally benign and sustainable alternatives to conventional methods. Moreover, the review elucidates various modification approaches, most notably, the formation of heterostructures, as viable strategies to enhance photocatalytic efficiency and mitigate the aforementioned drawbacks. The green synthesis of metal sulfides, aligned with the principles of green chemistry, offers a promising route toward the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly water treatment technologies. Exploring the interactions between compulsive buying and dietary practices is crucial in terms of understanding these behaviors from a behavioral standpoint. This paper investigates the relationships between compulsive buying (CB) and non-compulsive buying (non-CB), focusing on the influence of dietary habits (TFEQ), body mass index (BMI), and emotional valence. The study involved a representative sample of 707 Polish adults and employed tools such as the Compulsive Buying Scale, the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ), and the Emotional Appetite Questionnaire (EMAQ). The results revealed that compulsive buyers (CBs) had higher levels of cognitive restraint, emotional eating, and uncontrolled eating than non-compulsive buyers (non-CBs). Importantly, emotional valence—which includes both positive and negative emotions—significantly influenced dietary behaviors, illustrating the complex role emotions play in food consumption. Additionally, the results highlighted that the BMI significantly affects these relationships, suggesting different eating patterns across BMI categories. This study underscores the need for targeted interventions focusing on psychological and nutritional aspects to address these interconnected compulsive behaviors. Full article

In bioinformatics, pathway analyses are used to interpret biological data by mapping measured molecules with known pathways to discover their functional processes and relationships. Pathway analysis has become an essential tool for interpreting large-scale omics data, translating complex gene sets into actionable experimental insights. However, issues inherent to pathway databases and misinterpretations of pathway relevance often result in “pathway fails,” where findings, though statistically significant, lack biological applicability. For example, the Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) pathway was originally annotated based on its association with observed tumor necrosis, while it is multifunctional across diverse physiological processes in the body. This review broadly evaluates pathway analysis interpretation, including embedding-based, semantic similarity-based, and network-based approaches to clarify their ideal use-case scenarios. Each method for interpretation is assessed for its strengths, such as high-quality visualizations and ease of use, as well as its limitations, including data redundancy and database compatibility challenges. Despite advancements in the field, the principle of “garbage in, garbage out” (GIGO) shows that input quality and method choice are critical for reliable and biologically meaningful results. Methodological standardization, scalability improvements, and integration with diverse data sources remain areas for further development. By providing critical guidance with contextual examples such as TNF, we aim to help researchers align their objectives with the appropriate method. Advancing pathway analysis interpretation will further enhance the utility of pathway analysis, ultimately propelling progress in systems biology and personalized medicine. Full article

Parturition is accepted as a painful situation. Few studies explore pain-specific behaviours during farrowing in sows. The objectives of this study were, first, to assess if behavioural pain indicators (BPIs) are affected by the farrowing moment, parity, and suckling events, and second, to determine the relationship between the Facial Action Units (FAUs) and BPIs during farrowing. Ten Danbred sows were recorded throughout farrowing and on day 19 post-farrowing. Continuous observations of five BPIs and five FAUs were obtained across the three moments studied: (i) at the expulsion of the piglets, (ii) the time interval between the delivery of each piglet, and (iii) 19 days after farrowing, used as a control. Primiparous sows had more BPIs but fewer postural changes than multiparous sows. The BPIs were more frequent during suckling events in the pre-weaning moment. All the FAUs and BPIs were rare or absent post-farrowing (p < 0.05), and almost all of them were more frequent during farrowing (especially at the moment of delivery). Back arching showed the highest correlation with all the FAUs, and tension above the eyes showed the highest correlation with four of the BPIs. The BPIs and FAUs indicate that sows experience more pain during farrowing than during the third week post-farrowing, and piglet expulsion is the most painful moment in farrowing. Full article

Brachycephalic head shape in dogs has been associated with behavioural traits that may enhance their appeal as companion animals, contributing to their popularity. However, it remains unclear whether these behavioural differences are directly linked to head shape or are mediated by factors such as body size, demographics, and dog-keeping practices. Drawing on two large-scale owner surveys (N = 5613) and cephalic index estimates for 90 breeds, we investigated the relationship between head shape and eight behavioural variables (four personality traits and four behavioural problems), while controlling for 20 demographic and dog-keeping characteristics, as well as body size. Our results show that behavioural differences among head shapes are only partly attributable to head shape itself; some are explained by confounding variables. Specifically, brachycephalic dogs appeared predisposed to positive behaviours (e.g., calmness, fewer behavioural problems), but these traits were often obscured by their small body size and low training experience. These findings highlight the complex interplay between morphology, behaviour, and environment, and emphasize the role of training and management in supporting the behavioural well-being of popular brachycephalic breeds. This has important implications for owners, breeders, and welfare professionals aiming to align aesthetic preferences with behavioural and welfare outcomes. Full article

Assessment of Storm Surge Disaster Response Capacity in Chinese Coastal Cities Using Urban-Scale Survey Data

Currently, most studies evaluating storm surges are conducted at the provincial level, and there is a lack of detailed research focusing on cities. This paper focuses on the urban scale, using some fine-scale data of coastal areas obtained through remote sensing images. This research is based on the Hazard–Exposure–Vulnerability (H-E-V) framework and PPRR (Prevention, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery) crisis management theory. It focuses on 52 Chinese coastal cities as the research subject. The evaluation system for the disaster response capabilities of Chinese coastal cities was constructed based on three aspects: the stability of the disaster-incubating environment (S), the risk of disaster-causing factors (R), and the vulnerability of disaster-bearing bodies (V). The significance of this study is that the storm surge capability of China’s coastal cities can be analyzed based on the results of the evaluation, and the evaluation model can be used to identify its deficiencies. In this paper, these storm surge disaster response capabilities of coastal cities were scored using the entropy weighted TOPSIS method and the weight rank sum ratio (WRSR), and the results were also analyzed. The results indicate that Wenzhou has the best comprehensive disaster response capability, while Yancheng has the worst. Moreover, Tianjin, Ningde, and Shenzhen performed well in the three aspects of vulnerability of disaster-bearing bodies, risk of disaster-causing factors, and stability of disaster-incubating environment separately. On the contrary, Dandong (tied with Qinzhou), Jiaxing, and Chaozhou performed poorly in the above three areas. Full article

Objective: Retained primitive reflexes are associated with delayed motor and behavioral development in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study examined the effects of a 12-week structured exercise intervention on reflex integration, motor coordination, and socio-behavioral outcomes in these populations. Method: Fifteen children with ASD (13 boys, 2 girls) and twelve with ADHD (8 boys, 4 girls), aged 6–12 years, participated in rhythmic, balance, and coordination-based exercises. Primitive reflexes, including the asymmetrical tonic neck reflex (ATNR), were assessed using standardized protocols, and fine motor coordination was evaluated using the Finger and Thumb Opposition Test (FOT). Behavioral outcomes were measured using the Social Responsiveness Scale-2 (SRS-2) for the ASD group and the Conners 3 for the ADHD group. Results: The ASD group showed significant reductions in left-standing ATNR retention scores (p = 0.012) and improvements in right-hand FOT scores (p = 0.023). In the ADHD group, significant improvements were also observed in right-hand FOT scores (p = 0.007). Furthermore, Conners 3 Total and Global Index scores significantly decreased in the ADHD group (p = 0.016 and 0.020, respectively). Reflex retention patterns appeared broader and more bilateral in ASD than in ADHD, suggesting distinct motor developmental profiles. Conclusions: Short-term rhythmic, balance, and whole-body coordination exercise interventions may support behavioral and motor development in children with ASD and ADHD. Tailored programs emphasizing reflex integration hold promise for clinical and educational applications. Full article

Therefore, this paper reveals the distribution characteristics of estuary dams through the detailed dissection of the Qing 1 Member in the Daqingzijing area and establishes a completely new distribution pattern of estuary dams. By using geological data such as logging and core measurements, sedimentary microfacies at the shallow-water delta front are classified and logging facies identification charts for each sedimentary microfacies are developed. Based on the analysis of single-well and profile facies, the sedimentary evolution laws of the Qing 1 Member reservoirs are analyzed. On this basis, the sedimentary characteristics and model of the lacustrine shallow-water delta front are established. The results indicate that the Qing 1 Member in the Daqingzijing area exhibits a transitional sequence from a delta front to pro-delta facies and finally to deep lacustrine facies, with sediments continuously retrograding upward. Subaqueous distributary channels and estuary dams constitute the skeletal sand bodies of the retrogradational shallow-water delta. The estuary dam sand bodies are distributed on both sides of the subaqueous distributary channels, with sand body development gradually decreasing in scale from bottom to top. These bodies are intermittently distributed, overlapping, and laterally connected in plan view, challenging the conventional understanding that estuary dams only occur at the bifurcation points of underwater distributary channels. Establishing the sedimentary characteristics and model of the shallow-water delta front is of great significance for the exploration and development of reservoirs with similar sedimentary settings. Background/Objectives: Prehabilitation is a multimodal intervention introduced in preparation for various surgical procedures. The most effective treatment for obesity is bariatric surgery. Physiotherapy during prehabilitation for bariatric surgery may be an effective method of functional capacity improvement. We aimed to evaluate the impact of an individual outpatient 12-week, exercise-based physiotherapy program featuring prehabilitation on functional status, exercise tolerance, everyday mobility, and fatigue among patients qualified for bariatric surgery. Methods: The completion of an individual outpatient 12-week, exercise-based physiotherapy program during prehabilitation was an inclusion criterion for the study group. Participants included in the study and control groups were assessed twice, after enrollment into the prehabilitation program (the first assessment) and after prehabilitation but before surgery (the second assessment). Both assessments involved functional tests (a six-minute walking test [6MWT], a timed up and go test [TUG], a chest mobility test, anthropometric measures, a mobility index [Barthel], and a modified Borg scale). The collected anthropometric data and values from the 6MWT were used to create original linear models. This study followed STROBE recommendations. Results: The study group and control group did not differ statistically in terms of their anthropometric data. Statistically significant results were obtained between the first and second assessments in both groups in terms of body weight and waist circumference. However, only the study group showed improved results in the TUG test (p = 0.0001) and distance in the 6MWT (p = 0.0005). The study group presented with the normalization of blood pressure (BP) after exertion in the second assessment (systolic BP p = 0.0204; diastolic BP p = 0.0377), and the 6MWT results were close to the norms. According to the original linear model used to predict performance in the 6MWT, the primary modifiable determinant of exercise tolerance was the participant’s weight, while gender served as a non-modifiable determinant. Conclusions: Exercise-based physiotherapy in prehabilitation was associated with improved functional capacity in patients preparing for bariatric surgery, contributing to the improvement in 6MWT results in relation to the norms as well as exercise tolerance. Body weight may be an independent factor determining distance in the 6MWT for patients undergoing prehabilitation for bariatric surgery. Full article

Background/Objectives: “Ozempic face” is an aesthetic side effect associated with the use of the antidiabetic agent Ozempic (semaglutide), characterized by a prematurely aged and fatigued facial appearance due to rapid weight loss. Currently, treatment options for this condition are limited. In this study, we present our clinical experience with the BodyTite device, provided by InMode Italy S.r.l. (Rome, Italy). Materials and Methods: We report a case series involving 24 patients (19 women and 5 men, aged 27–65 years), treated with subdermal bipolar radiofrequency (Endotissutal Bipolar Radiofrequency) between 2023 and 2024. All patients underwent a minimum follow-up of 12 months. At the end of the follow-up period, patients rated their satisfaction on a from 0 to 10 scale, and an independent expert assessed the stability of clinical outcomes. Results: The majority of patients reported high satisfaction levels (≥8), which correlated with the independent expert’s evaluation of treatment efficacy and result stability. The only observed adverse event was transient cutaneous erythema. Conclusions: “Ozempic face” is an increasingly common side effect associated with newer classes of antidiabetic medications. Although these drugs offer significant metabolic benefits, the accompanying facial volume loss and aging are often poorly tolerated by patients. Our findings suggest that subdermal bipolar radiofrequency represents a safe, low-risk, and cost-effective therapeutic option for the aesthetic management of Ozempic face. Full article

Background: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease linked to systemic comorbidities, including metabolic, cardiovascular, and autoimmune disorders. Thyroid dysfunction, particularly hypothyroidism, has been observed in patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis, suggesting possible shared inflammatory pathways. Objectives: This study aims to explore the relationship between psoriasis and thyroid dysfunction in adults with moderate-to-severe psoriasis undergoing biologic therapy to determine whether psoriasis predisposes individuals to thyroid disorders and to identify demographic or clinical factors influencing this association. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study included adult patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis receiving biologic therapy, recruited from the Psoriasis Unit at the Dermatology Department of Hospital Universitario San Cecilio in Granada, Spain, from 2017 to 2023. Patients with mild psoriasis or those treated with conventional systemic therapies were excluded. The data collected included demographics and clinical characteristics, such as age, sex, BMI (body mass index), and psoriasis severity (psoriasis severity was evaluated using the Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI), body surface area (BSA) involvement, Investigator’s Global Assessment (IGA), pruritus severity using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), and impact on quality of life through the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI)). Thyroid dysfunction, including hypothyroidism and subclinical hypothyroidism, was assessed based on records from the Endocrinology Department. Results: Thyroid dysfunction was found in 4.2% of patients, all classified as hypothyroidism, primarily subclinical. The affected patients were generally older, with a mean age of 57.4 years. No significant differences in psoriasis severity (PASI, BSA) or treatment response were observed between patients with and without thyroid dysfunction. Conclusion: Our findings suggest hypothyroidism is the main thyroid dysfunction in psoriatic patients, independent of psoriasis severity. The lack of impact on psoriasis severity suggests hypothyroidism may be an independent comorbidity, warranting further research into shared inflammatory mechanisms. Full article
