Monoacylglycerols (MAGs) are significant intermediate byproducts in the hydrolysis of oils and fats. The accumulation of MAGs not only reduces the quality and purity of the final products in biodiesel production and edible oil refining but also poses challenges for downstream separation processes. Therefore, the development of efficient biocatalysts for the specific MAG conversion is of great industrial importance. The lipase from Aspergillus oryzae (AOL) has shown potential for lipid modification; however, the wild-type enzyme (WT) suffers from poor solubility, tendency to aggregate, and low specific activity towards MAGs in aqueous systems, which severely restricts its practical application. In this study, a combinatorial protein engineering strategy was employed to overcome these limitations. We integrated fusion protein technology with rational design to enhance both the functional expression and catalytic efficiency of AOL. Firstly, the superfolder green fluorescent protein (sfGFP) was fused to the N-terminus of AOL. The results indicated that the sfGFP fusion tag significantly improved the solubility and stability of the enzyme, preventing the formation of inclusion bodies. The fusion protein sfGFP-AOL exhibited a MAG conversion rate of approximately 65%, confirming the positive impact of the fusion tag on enzyme developability. To further boost catalytic performance, site-directed mutagenesis was performed based on structural analysis. Among the variants, the mutant sfGFP-Y92Q emerged as the most potent candidate. In the MAG conversion, sfGFP-Y92Q achieved a conversion rate of 98%, which was not only significantly higher than that of sfGFP-AOL but also outperformed the widely used commercial immobilized lipase, Novozym 435 (~54%). Structural modeling and docking analysis revealed that the Y92Q mutation optimized the geometry of the active site. The substitution of Tyrosine with Glutamine at position 92 likely enlarged the substrate-binding pocket and altered the local electrostatic environment, thereby relieving steric hindrance and facilitating the access of the bulky MAG substrate to the catalytic center. In conclusion, this work demonstrates that the synergistic application of sfGFP fusion and rational point mutation (Y92Q) can dramatically transform the catalytic properties of AOL. The engineered sfGFP-Y92Q variant serves as a robust and highly efficient biocatalyst for MAG degradation. Its superior performance compared to commercial standards suggests immense potential for cost-effective applications in the bio-manufacturing of high-purity fatty acids and biodiesel, offering a greener alternative to traditional chemical processes. Biodiesel, which is a blend of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), has garnered significant attention as a promising alternative to petroleum-based diesel fuel. Nevertheless, the commercial production of biodiesel faces challenges due to the high costs associated with feedstock and the non-recyclable homogeneous catalyst system. To address these issues, a solid catalyst derived from construction industry waste cement was synthesized and utilized for biodiesel production from waste cooking oil (WCO). The catalyst’s surface and physical characteristics were analyzed through various techniques, including Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The waste-cement catalyst demonstrated remarkable catalytic performance and reusability in the transesterification of WCO with methanol for biodiesel synthesis. A maximum biodiesel yield of 98.1% was obtained under the optimal reaction conditions of reaction temperature 65 °C; methanol/WCO molar ratio 16:1; calcined cement dosage 3 g; and reaction time 8 h. The apparent activation energy (Ea) from the reaction kinetic study is 35.78 KJ·mol−1, suggesting that the transesterification reaction is governed by kinetic control rather than diffusion. The biodiesel produced exhibited high-quality properties and can be utilized in existing diesel engines without any modifications. This research presents a scalable, environmentally benign pathway for WCO transesterification, thereby contributing significantly to the economic viability and long-term sustainability of the global biodiesel industry. The massive influx of pelagic Sargassum in the Caribbean poses a serious environmental, social, and economic problem, as the stranded biomass is often treated as waste and deposited in landfills. This literature review synthesizes recent research highlighting its potential for valorization in various industries, turning this challenge into an opportunity. Sargassum has low levels of protein and lipids. Still, it is particularly rich in carbohydrates, such as alginates, fucoidans, mannitol, and cellulose, as well as secondary metabolites, including phenolic compounds, flavonoids, pigments, and phytosterols with antioxidant and bioactive properties. These biochemical characteristics allow for its application in renewable energy (bioethanol, biogas, biodiesel, and combustion), agriculture (fertilizers and biostimulants), construction (composite materials, cement additives, and insulation), bioremediation (adsorption of heavy metals and dyes), and in the health sector (antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and pharmacological uses). A major limitation is its high bioaccumulation capacity for heavy metals, particularly arsenic, which increases environmental and health risks and limits its direct use in food and feed. Therefore, innovative pretreatment and bioprocessing are essential to mitigate these risks. The most promising approach for its utilization is a biorefinery model, which allows for the sequential extraction of multiple high-value compounds and energy products to maximize benefits, reduce costs, and sustainably transform Sargassum from a coastal pest into a valuable industrial resource. The development of sustainable catalysts from renewable resources is a key challenge for reducing the cost of industrial catalytic processes and waste valorization. In this work, low-cost heterogeneous active catalysts were prepared based on pyrolyzed forest residues, forming valuable porous support materials (Biochar) able to efficiently accommodate the highly active heteropolyacid HPW12. Further, magnetic functionality was incorporated in the novel catalytic materials by the impregnation of NiFe2O4. The resulting magnetic composites were characterized by FTIR-ATR, SEM-EDS, ICP-OES, BET, XRD, potentiometric titration and magnetometry. The novel HPW12@NiFe2O4@Biochar composites were able to valorize the glycerol to produce the fuel additive solketal with high conversion and high selectivity after only 3 h of reaction via acetalization reaction with acetone. The biochar catalytic composite prepared from cork presented higher pore size than the same prepared from forest biomass. This property was crucial to achieve the best conversion (89%) and the highest solketal selectivity (96%). Additionally, reusability capacity was verified, supporting the potential of the cork-pyrolyzed-based composites as potential low-cost catalytic material to produce fuel additives, such as solketal, under sustainable conditions. This may contribute one step further toward a future with greener energy, increasing the viability of biodiesel industry waste. Full article

Valorization of environmental waste into sustainable energy and value-added products offers a strategic pathway for advancing circular economic development and resource sustainability. In this study, waste cooking oil was converted into biodiesel using biogenically generated CaO, prepared thermally at 900 °C. The reaction process was modeled and optimized with a Taguchi orthogonal array L9(34), considering four factors at three levels to yield nine experimental conditions. The model reliability was statistically validated through analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 95% confidence level (p < 0.05), achieving a high determination coefficient (R2) of 0.9965. The maximum biodiesel yield of 91.08% was obtained under the optimal conditions of the methanol to oil ratio of 15:1, a catalyst loading of 4.5 wt%, a reaction time of 90 min, a temperature of 65 °C, and a constant stirring speed of 650 rpm. The fuel property analysis confirmed compliance with international biodiesel and diesel standards). Economic evaluation of the process showed that integrating waste cooking oil with reusable seashell-derived catalysts enabled the production of high-quality biodiesel at R23.20 (~USD 1.39)/L, highlighting a sustainable and cost-competitive alternative to conventional feedstock. Biofuels represent a viable alternative to fossil fuels due to their lower greenhouse gas emissions, potential for large-scale production, and renewable nature. Orange oil, turpentine, and their hydrogenated derivatives have emerged as promising candidates for biofuel components. Efficient design and operation of internal combustion engines require knowledge of biofuel density and viscosity as functions of temperature; however, experimental data on these properties remain limited. In this work, the densities and viscosities of turpentine, orange oil, hydrogenated turpentine, and hydrogenated orange oil were measured at atmospheric pressure over the temperature range (293.15–373.15) K. The measurements were performed with uncertainties below 0.05 kg·m−3 for density and 0.3 mPa·s for viscosity. The experimental data were correlated as a function of temperature using a quadratic function for density and the Andrade equation for viscosity, with absolute average relative deviations of 0.01% for density and 0.5% for viscosity. For all substances, both viscosity and density decrease with increasing temperature, and they are lower than the values for biodiesel. Orange oil and turpentine exhibited higher densities but lower viscosities than their hydrogenated counterparts, which can be attributed to differences in molecular size and packing efficiency. Finally, the measured density and viscosity values are compared with the limit values specified in the European and American biodiesel standards. The analysis shows that blending these essential oils with conventional biodiesel could result in biofuel mixtures that meet both standards. Full article

A series of clay–spinel nanocomposites reinforced by tungstophosphoric acid (TPA) were prepared and examined for the esterification of oleic acid. The type of spinel (ZnAl2O4 and CuAl2O4) and the weight ratio of clay-to-spinel were evaluated. The characterization results revealed that the clay–ZnAl2O4 nanocomposite formed better than the clay–CuAl2O4, with fewer other phases, such as ZnO or CuO. Moreover, clay–ZnAl2O4 showed higher pore volume and pore size, which led to higher conversion of oleic acid to biodiesel. The nanocomposite exhibited a good interaction between the spinel phase and clay, preventing the agglomeration of TPA. Assessing the weight ratio of clay-to-ZnAl2O4 (0.5, 1, and 1.5) showed that the same ratio of clay-to-spinel provided higher activity. It can be attributed to its rough surface, which facilitates vortex flow on the catalyst surface, its high pore volume (0.122 cc/g), and pore size (24.6 nm), enabling the diffusion of reactants and the egression of products, as well as its high acidic (453.9 μmol/g) and basic (731.6 μmol/g) properties. The clay–ZnAl2O4(1)–TPA with the largest particle size in the range of 10–30 nm converted 81.9% of oleic acid under the conditions of 120 °C, a 12 molar ratio of methanol-to-oleic acid, 4 wt.% of catalyst, and 4 h of reaction time. Due to both acidic and basic properties, along with its good reusability, the clay–ZnAl2O4(1)–TPA nanocatalyst can be a suitable catalyst for industrial biodiesel production via esterification and transesterification reactions. The conversion of biodiesel’s chemical energy into mechanical work in diesel engines is strongly influenced by the formation and quality of the fuel–air mixture. The physical and chemical properties of biodiesel, together with the operating characteristics of the fuel injection system, play a crucial role in this process. This study presents experimental findings on the injection behavior of a mechanically controlled injection system using three fuel types: pure rapeseed biodiesel, a 50% biodiesel–diesel blend, and conventional diesel fuel. The analysis focused on injection pressure, injection timing, injection duration, and fuel delivery under various operating conditions. In the second part of the experimental investigation, spray visualization was carried out by injecting fuels into a transparent liquid-filled chamber. A dedicated imaging and processing system was applied to capture and analyze spray development. From the recorded sequences, macroscopic spray parameters—including spray penetration length, spray cone angle, and projected spray area—were determined across different injection regimes. This approach allows clear identification of spray development tendencies and supports systematic comparison between fuels, particularly in relation to differences in injection pressure, injection duration, and delivered fuel quantity arising from the mechanically governed injection system. Correlation analysis between spray penetration length and peak injection pressure further highlights pressure-driven contributions to spray evolution. The findings contribute to better understanding of biodiesel spray behavior under realistic mechanically controlled conditions, supporting optimization of fuel injection performance and aiding in the selection or formulation of biodiesel fuels with improved spray characteristics. This study investigates the performance, emissions, and physicochemical characteristics of a small-scale gas turbine fueled with Jet A and camelina biodiesel blends (B10, B20, and B30). The blends were characterized by slightly higher density (up to +3%), viscosity (+12–18%), and lower heating value (−7–9%) compared to Jet A. These fuel properties influenced the combustion behavior and overall turbine response. Experimental results showed that exhaust gas temperature decreased by 40–60 °C and specific fuel consumption (SFC) increased by 5–8% at idle, while thrust variation remained below 2% across all operating regimes. Fuel flow was reduced by 4–9% depending on the blend ratio, confirming efficient atomization despite the higher viscosity. Emission measurements indicated a 20–30% reduction in SO2 and a 10–35% increase in CO at low load, mainly due to the sulfur-free composition and lower combustion temperature of biodiesel. Transient response analysis revealed that biodiesel blends mitigated overshoot and undershoot amplitudes during load changes, improving combustion stability. Overall, the results demonstrate that camelina biodiesel–Jet A blends up to 30% ensure stable turbine operation with quantifiable environmental benefits and minimal performance penalties, confirming their suitability as sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). Biodiesel is an alternative, sustainable, renewable, and environmentally friendly energy source, which has generated interest from the scientific community due to its low toxicity, rapid biodegradability, and zero carbon footprint. Biodiesel is a biofuel produced by the transesterification of triglycerides or the esterification of free fatty acids (FFA). Both reactions require catalysts with numerous active sites (basic, acidic, bifunctional, or enzymatic) for efficient biodiesel production. On the other hand, since the late 1990s, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a new class of porous materials and have been successfully used in various fields due to their multiple properties. For this reason, MOFs have been used as heterogeneous catalysts or as a platform for designing active sites, thus improving stability and reusability. This literature review presents a comprehensive analysis of using MOFs as heterogeneous catalysts or supports for biodiesel production. The optimal parameters for transesterification/esterification are detailed, such as the alcohol/feedstock molar ratio, catalyst amount, reaction time and temperature, conversion percentage, biodiesel yield, fatty acid and water content, etc. Additionally, novel methodologies such as ultrasound and microwave irradiation for obtaining MOF-based catalysts are described. It is important to note that most studies have shown biodiesel yields >90% and multiple reuse cycles with minimal activity loss. The bibliographic analysis was conducted using the American Chemical Society (ACS) Scifinder® database, the Elsevier B.V. Scopus® database, and the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science® database, under the institutional license of the Universidad Veracruzana. Keywords were searched for each section, generally limiting the document type to “reviews” and “journals,” and the language to English, and published between 2000 and 2025. Full article

The precise regulation of water content plays a pivotal role in determining several the critical properties of marine fuels, including combustion stability, corrosion resistance, and the mitigation of pollutant emissions. The present study introduces an innovative, additive-free technique for moisture extraction from Marine Gasoil (MGO) utilizing the hydrophilic polymer polyacrylamide, which leverages its polar amino groups to attract water molecules. This process facilitates the physical extraction of moisture without modifying the fuel’s composition, in contrast to traditional drying techniques or chemical additions. Experimental findings indicate a 34.6% decrease in water content in MGO (from 29.3 mg/kg to 19.15 mg/kg) and a 36.5% reduction in MGO–biodiesel blends (from 32.04 mg/kg to 20.34 mg/kg), accomplished within one hour of treatment. The scientific significance of this work lies in its discovery of polyacrylamide’s ability to retain moisture within a nonpolar fuel matrix—a phenomenon not previously investigated in maritime fuel applications. The findings highlight the potential for further research into polymer–fuel interactions and non-chemical strategies for fuel enhancement. Economically, the proposed technology reduces dependence on costly chemical additives and energy-intensive drying processes, while environmentally, it improves combustion efficiency and lowers emissions of hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and smoke. Overall, the results introduce a novel, sustainable, and practical process for improving maritime fuel quality, while supporting compliance with increasingly stringent regional and global environmental regulations. Biodiesel is an alternative to conventional diesel. The use of heterogeneous catalysts in biodiesel production is promising, as it is easier to separate them from the product than homogeneous ones. It was determined that the calcined grape snail (Helix pomatia) shells show good catalytic efficiency in the rapeseed oil transesterification process with methanol. It was determined that the CaO concentration in calcined grape snail (Helix pomatia) shells was 97.74 ± 0.12%. Using the response surface methodology, the biodiesel production process was optimized. The influence of the interaction of independent variables and optimal conditions for the synthesis of rapeseed oil methyl ester was determined: an alcohol-to-oil molar ratio of 10.6:1, a catalyst concentration of 5.7 wt%, and a reaction duration of 7.8 h at a temperature of 64 °C. The physical and chemical properties of the produced biodiesel at optimal process conditions are presented, and their compliance with the requirements of the biodiesel standard is discussed. The produced biodiesel using snail shells, which are food processing waste, meets the requirements of the standard and can be used in diesel engines during the summer period. Full article

A Robust AHP–TOPSIS Framework for Optimal Biodiesel Blend Selection Based on Emission Profiles, Fuel Properties and Blend Prices

This study evaluates eight biodiesel blend types and determines the overall optimal blend by applying two established multi-criteria decision-making methods: the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). The selected blends represent widely produced and utilized feedstocks that are reported in the previous literature. In the proposed methodology, AHP is employed to determine the weights for both emissions-related subcriteria, quantified through Global Warming Potential scores and property-related subcriteria, thereby reducing the subjectivity often encountered in earlier studies. Furthermore, two boundary alternatives, defined as the “Best” and “Worst” based on international standards, are introduced to enhance the robustness of the normalization procedure. The weights determined via AHP are subsequently integrated into the TOPSIS framework to rank the biodiesel alternatives. This combined AHP-TOPSIS approach addresses a gap in the literature, as no previous study has compared the best performing blends from different sources to identify a single optimal alternative. The results indicate that a 20% sunflower biodiesel blend (SN20) achieves the highest ranking. Sensitivity analyses, including the incorporation of an additional economic criterion, consistently reaffirm SN20’s superior performance. This study offers a transparent and reproducible method that can guide future biodiesel blend evaluations and reduce subjectivity in comparative assessment. Full article

The search for novel microbial lipases with robust and versatile biochemical properties remains a priority in industrial biotechnology. In this study, the gut microbiota of the Peruvian anchovy (Engraulis ringens) was explored as a potential source of lipase-producing bacteria. A total of 31 distinct bacterial strains were isolated, among which 10 exhibited extracellular lipase activity in qualitative plate assays. Molecular identification revealed representatives of the genera Staphylococcus, Serratia, and Aeromonas. Two promising strains, Staphylococcus ureilyticus LMB-06 and LMB-Ju02, were selected based on their superior lipase productivity and were further subjected to partial biochemical characterization. Their lipase-containing secretomes displayed activity across a broad temperature range, retained stability under mildly acidic conditions (pH 5.0–6.0), tolerated several organic solvents, and exhibited enhanced activity in the presence of Ca2+. Notably, the lipase activity of LMB-06 was positively influenced by Mg2+ and K+—a response not previously reported for Staphylococcus lipases—suggesting unique enzymatic properties. In addition, LMB-06 retained activity in the presence of H2O2, highlighting its suitability for biodiesel production from recycled oils. Furthermore, hydrolysis assays using various natural oils as substrates revealed a marked preference for plant-based oils, particularly olive oil. Altogether, these findings highlight the value of S. ureilyticus strains from anchovy gut microbiota as novel biocatalyst sources for sustainable oil bioprocessing and oleochemical applications. A Study on the Performance and Emission Characteristics of Cotton and Waste Lard Biodiesel on a CI Engine

In this study, cottonseed oil biodiesel and waste lard biodiesel were produced through a transesterification process and blended with conventional diesel at different ratios (B10 and B20). The performance and emission characteristics of these fuels were systematically evaluated in a single-cylinder, four-stroke, water-cooled diesel engine operating at speeds of 1000–1800 rpm under a constant 50% load. The physicochemical properties of the fuels were analyzed, and engine parameters including brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC), brake thermal efficiency (BTE), exhaust gas temperature (EGT), and emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC), carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) were measured. The results demonstrated that, compared with diesel, biodiesel blends significantly reduced CO, HC, and CO2 emissions. At 1800 rpm, the LB20 blend showed reductions of 31.03% in CO, 47.06% in HCs, and 19.14% in CO2 relative to diesel. These reductions are mainly attributed to the higher oxygen content and lower hydrogen-to-carbon ratio of biodiesel, which promote more complete combustion. However, all biodiesel blends exhibited higher NOx emissions than diesel, with the increase being more pronounced at higher blend ratios. At 1800 rpm, the LB20 blend recorded the highest NOx emissions, which were 20.63% higher than those of diesel under the same condition. In terms of performance, biodiesel blends showed higher BSFC and lower BTE compared with diesel, mainly due to their lower calorific value and higher viscosity. The lowest BTE and the highest BSFC were both observed with the LB20 blend, at 22.64% and 358.11 g/kWh, respectively. Full article
