The shift from Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles (ICEVs) to Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) has accelerated global efforts to decarbonize transportation. However, battery degradation, high costs, and limited lifespan remain critical barriers. This review synthesizes recent innovations to extend Li-ion battery life in BEVs by exploring advances in degradation modeling, adaptive Battery Management Systems (BMSs), electronic component simulations, and real-world usage profiling. The authors have systematically analyzed over 80 recent studies using a PRISMA-guided review protocol. A novel comparative framework highlights gaps in current literature, particularly regarding real-world driving impacts, ripple current effects, and second-life battery applications. This review article critically compares model-driven, data-driven, and hybrid model approaches, emphasizing trade-offs in interpretability, accuracy, and deployment feasibility. Finally, the review links battery life extension to broader sustainability metrics, including circular economy models and predictive maintenance algorithms. This review offers actionable insights for researchers, engineers, and policymakers aiming to design longer-lasting and more sustainable electric mobility systems. Full article

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles have started to be used more and more due to the benefits they bring. Failure of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle components may result in loss of control, which may cause property damage or personal injury. In order to increase the operational safety of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, the implementation of a Predictive Maintenance system using the Internet of Things is required. In this paper, the authors propose a new architecture of Predictive Maintenance system for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles that is able to identify the fault type of Brushless DC electric motor and determine the Remaining Useful Life of the Li-ion batteries. In order to create the Predictive Maintenance system within the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, an architecture based on Fog Computing was proposed and Machine Learning was used to extract knowledge from the data. Wearable sensors are central to health-monitoring systems, but the limited capacity of compact batteries poses a challenge for long-term and maintenance-free operation. In this study, we investigated ambient electromagnetic wave (AEMW) energy harvesting using a human body antenna (HBA) as a means to supply power to wearable sensors. The power density and frequency distribution of AEMWs were measured in diverse indoor, outdoor, and basement environments. We designed and fabricated a flexible HBA–circuit interface electrode, optimized for broadband impedance matching when worn on the body. Experimental comparisons using a simulated AEMW source demonstrated that the HBA outperformed a conventional small whip antenna, particularly at frequencies below 300 MHz. Furthermore, the outdoor measurements indicated that the power harvested by the HBA was estimated to be −31.9 dBm (0.64 μW), which is sufficient for the intermittent operation of low-power wearable sensors and Bluetooth Low Energy modules. The electromagnetic safety was also evaluated through numerical analysis, and the specific absorption rate was confirmed to be well below the international safety limits. These findings indicate that HBA-based AEMW energy harvesting provides a practical and promising approach to achieving battery-maintenance-free wearable devices. Full article

The improvement of environmental conditions has become a priority for governments and legislators. New electrified mobility systems are increasingly present in our environment, as they enable the reduction of polluting emissions. Electric vehicles (EVs) are one of the fastest-growing alternatives to date, with exponential growth expected over the next few years. In this article, the various charging modes for EVs are explored, and the risks associated with charging technologies are analysed, particularly for charging systems in high-power DC with Lithium battery energy storage, given their long market deployment and characteristic behaviour. In particular, the Arc Flash (AF) risk present in high-power DC chargers will be studied, involving numerous simulations of the charging process. Subsequently, the Incident Energy (IE) analysis is carried out at different specific points of a commercial high-power ‘Mode 4’ charger. For this purpose, different analysis methods of recognised prestige, such as Doan, Paukert, or Stokes and Oppenlander, are applied, using the latest version of the ETAP® simulation tool version 22.5.0. This study focuses on quantifying the potential severity (consequences) of an AF event, assuming its occurrence, rather than performing a probabilistic risk assessment according to standard methodologies. The primary objective of this research is to comprehensively quantify the potential consequences for workers involved in the operation, maintenance, repair, and execution of tasks related to EV charging systems. This analysis makes it possible to provide safe working conditions and to choose the appropriate and necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for each type of operation. It is essential to develop this novel process to quantify the consequences of AF and to protect the end users of EV charging systems. Full article

The widespread integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into smart grid infrastructures necessitates intelligent and robust battery health diagnostics to ensure system resilience and performance longevity. While numerous studies have addressed the estimation of State of Health (SOH) and the prediction of remaining useful life (RUL) using machine and deep learning, most existing models fail to capture both short-term degradation trends and long-range contextual dependencies jointly. In this study, we introduce V2G-HealthNet, a novel hybrid deep learning framework that uniquely combines Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks with Transformer-based attention mechanisms to model battery degradation under dynamic vehicle-to-grid (V2G) scenarios. Unlike prior approaches that treat SOH estimation in isolation, our method directly links health prediction to operational decisions by enabling SOH-informed adaptive load scheduling and predictive maintenance across EV fleets. Trained on over 3400 proxy charge-discharge cycles derived from 1 million telemetry samples, V2G-HealthNet achieved state-of-the-art performance (SOH RMSE: 0.015, MAE: 0.012, R2: 0.97), outperforming leading baselines including XGBoost and Random Forest. For RUL prediction, the model maintained an MAE of 0.42 cycles over a five-cycle horizon. Importantly, deployment simulations revealed that V2G-HealthNet triggered maintenance alerts at least three cycles ahead of critical degradation thresholds and redistributed high-load tasks away from ageing batteries—capabilities not demonstrated in previous works. These findings establish V2G-HealthNet as a deployable, health-aware control layer for smart city electrification strategies. Full article

Terahertz (THz) communications and simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) hold the potential to energize battery-less Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices while enabling multi-gigabit data transmission. However, severe path loss, blockages, and rectifier nonlinearity significantly hinder both throughput and harvested energy. Additionally, high-power THz beams pose safety concerns by potentially exceeding specific absorption rate (SAR) limits. We propose a sensing-adaptive power-focusing (APF) framework in which a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) embeds low-rate THz sensors. Real-time backscatter measurements construct a spatial map used for the joint optimisation of (i) RIS phase configurations, (ii) multi-tone SWIPT waveforms, and (iii) nonlinear power-splitting ratios. A weighted MMSE inner loop maximizes the data rate, while an outer alternating optimisation applies semidefinite relaxation to enforce passive-element constraints and SAR compliance. Full-stack simulations at 0.3 THz with 20 GHz bandwidth and up to 256 RIS elements show that APF (i) improves the rate–energy Pareto frontier by 30–75% over recent adaptive baselines; (ii) achieves a 150% gain in harvested energy and a 440 Mbps peak per-user rate; (iii) reduces energy-efficiency variance by half while maintaining a Jain fairness index of 0.999;; and (iv) caps SAR at 1.6 W/kg, which is 20% below the IEEE C95.1 safety threshold. The algorithm converges in seven iterations and executes within <3 ms on a Cortex-A78 processor, ensuring compliance with real-time 6G control budgets. The proposed architecture supports sustainable THz-powered networks for smart factories, digital-twin logistics, wire-free extended reality (XR), and low-maintenance structural health monitors, combining high-capacity communication, safe wireless power transfer, and carbon-aware operation for future 6G cyber–physical systems. The scope of this paper is the development of a cost-effective wireless torque measurement system for vehicle drivetrain shafts. The prototype integrates strain gauges, an HX711 conditioner, a Wemos D1 Mini ESP8266, and a rechargeable battery directly on the rotating shaft, forming a self-contained sensor node. Calibration against a certified dynamometric wrench confirmed an operating span of ±5–50 N·m. Within this range, the device achieved a mean absolute error of 0.559 N·m. It also maintained precision better than ±2.5 N·m at 95% confidence, while real-time data were transmitted via Wi-Fi. The total component cost is below EUR 30 based on current prices. The novelty of this proof-of-concept implementation demonstrates that reliable, IoT-enabled torque sensing can be realized with low-cost, readily available parts. The paper details assembly, calibration, and deployment procedures, providing a transparent pathway for replication. By aligning with Industry 4.0 requirements for smart, connected equipment, the proposed torque measurement system offers an affordable solution for process monitoring and predictive maintenance in automotive and industrial settings. In the automotive industry, the supply of service parts—such as bumpers, batteries, and aero parts—is required even after the end of vehicle production, as customers need them for maintenance and repairs. To earn customer confidence, manufacturers must ensure timely availability of these parts while managing inventory efficiently. An excess of inventory can increase warehousing costs, while stock shortages can lead to supply delays. Accurate demand forecasting is essential to balance these factors, considering the changing demand characteristics over time, such as long-term trends, seasonal fluctuations, and irregular variations. This paper introduces a novel method for time series forecasting that employs Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) and Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) to analyze service part demand. EEMD decomposes historical order data into multiple modes, and DMD is used to predict transitions within these modes. The proposed method demonstrated an approximately 30% reduction in forecasting error compared to comparative methods, showcasing its effectiveness in accurately predicting service parts demand across various patterns. Contemporary research on electric buses focuses mainly on the following issues: energy efficiency, range and transport costs, and traction battery technology. However, little research has been conducted on operational reliability. This article presents a comparative assessment of the reliability of electric buses in relation to combustion engine buses. The research was conducted under real conditions in the city of Lublin, Poland. The reliability functions of buses and their structural components were determined based on the Weibull distribution. It was shown that electric buses have a shorter distance between failures than combustion engine buses of analogous capacity. The statistical significance of the differences in reliability between electric and combustion engine buses was verified. The suitability of the Weibull model as a model of bus reliability in comparative studies was verified. The results of the research can be used to monitor current sustainable public transport development programs and to improve bus diagnostic and maintenance systems in transport companies. Full article

Accurate SOH prediction provides a reliable reference for lithium-ion battery maintenance. However, novel algorithms are still needed because few studies have considered the correlations between monitored parameters in Euclidean space and non-Euclidean space at different time points. To address this challenge, a novel gated-temporal network assisted by improved grasshopper optimization (IGOA-GGNN-TCN) is developed. In this model, features obtained from lithium-ion batteries are used to construct graph data based on cosine similarity. On this basis, the GGNN-TCN is employed to obtain the potential correlations between monitored parameters in Euclidean and non-Euclidean spaces. Furthermore, IGOA is introduced to overcome the issue of hyperparameter optimization for GGNN-TCN, improving the convergence speed and the local optimal problem. Competitive results on the Oxford dataset indicate that the SOH prediction performance of proposed IGOA-GGNN-TCN surpasses conventional methods, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and gate recurrent unit (GRUs), achieving an R2 value greater than 0.99. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed IGOA-GGNN-TCN framework offers a novel and effective approach for state-of-health (SOH) estimation in lithium-ion batteries. By integrating improved grasshopper optimization (IGOA) with hybrid graph-temporal modeling, the method achieves superior prediction accuracy compared to conventional techniques, providing a promising tool for battery management systems in real-world applications. This paper provides a reliability analysis of selected components in the electrical power supply systems used for railway traffic control equipment. It includes rectifiers, controllers, inverters, generators, batteries, sensors, and switching elements. The study used failure data from power supply system elements on selected railway lines. The analysis was performed using a mathematical model based on Markov processes. Based on the findings, recommendations were made to improve safety levels. The results presented in the paper could serve as a valuable source of information for operators of power supply systems in railway traffic control, helping them optimize maintenance processes and increase equipment reliability. The inevitable decline in battery performance presents a major barrier to its widespread industrial application. Adaptive and accurate estimation of battery capacity is paramount for battery operation, maintenance, and residual value evaluation. In this paper, we propose a novel battery capacity estimation method based on an approximate open circuit voltage curve. The proposed method is rigorously tested using both lithium–iron–phosphate (LFP) and nickel–cobalt–manganese (NCM) battery packs at multiple charging rates under varied aging conditions. To further enhance capacity estimation accuracy, a voltage correction strategy is implemented utilizing the incremental capacity (IC) curve. This strategy also verifies the potential benefits of increasing the charging rate to shorten the overall test duration. Eventually, the capacity estimation error is consistently controlled within 2%. With optimal state of charge (SOC) interval selection, the estimation error can be further reduced to 1%. Clearly, our proposed method exhibits excellent compatibility across diverse battery materials and degradation states. This adaptability holds substantial scientific value and practical importance. It contributes to the safe and economic utilization of Li-ion batteries throughout their entire lifespan. Full article

The increasing deployment of photovoltaic and energy storage systems (ESSs) in modern power grids has highlighted the critical challenge of component degradation, which significantly impacts system efficiency, operational costs, and long-term reliability. Conventional energy dispatch and optimization approaches fail to adequately mitigate the progressive efficiency loss in PV modules and battery storage, leading to suboptimal performance and reduced system longevity. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a quantum-enhanced degradation pathway optimization framework that dynamically adjusts operational strategies to extend the lifespan of PV storage systems while maintaining high efficiency. By leveraging quantum-assisted Monte Carlo simulations and hybrid quantum–classical optimization, the proposed model evaluates degradation pathways in real time and proactively optimizes energy dispatch to minimize efficiency losses due to aging effects. The framework integrates a quantum-inspired predictive maintenance algorithm, which utilizes probabilistic modeling to forecast degradation states and dynamically adjust charge–discharge cycles in storage systems. Unlike conventional optimization methods, which struggle with the complexity and stochastic nature of degradation mechanisms, the proposed approach capitalizes on quantum parallelism to assess multiple degradation scenarios simultaneously, significantly enhancing computational efficiency. A three-layer hierarchical optimization structure is introduced, ensuring real-time degradation risk assessment, periodic dispatch optimization, and long-term predictive adjustments based on PV and battery aging trends. The framework is tested on a 5 MW PV array coupled with a 2.5 MWh lithium-ion battery system, with real-world degradation models applied to reflect light-induced PV degradation (0.7% annual efficiency loss) and battery state-of-health deterioration (1.2% per 100 cycles). A hybrid quantum–classical computing environment, utilizing D-Wave’s Advantage quantum annealer alongside a classical reinforcement learning-based optimization engine, enables large-scale scenario evaluation and real-time operational adjustments. The simulation results demonstrate that the quantum-enhanced degradation optimization framework significantly reduces efficiency losses, extending the PV module’s lifespan by approximately 2.5 years and reducing battery-degradation-induced wear by 25% compared to conventional methods. The quantum-assisted predictive maintenance model ensures optimal dispatch strategies that balance energy demand with system longevity, preventing excessive degradation while maintaining grid reliability. The findings establish a novel paradigm in degradation-aware energy optimization, showcasing the potential of quantum computing in enhancing the sustainability and resilience of PV storage systems. This research paves the way for the broader integration of quantum-based decision-making in renewable energy infrastructure, enabling scalable, high-performance optimization for future energy systems. In pursuit of zero-emission targets, increasing sustainability concerns have prompted urban centers to adopt more environmentally friendly modes of transportation, notably through the deployment of electric vehicles (EVs). A prominent manifestation of this shift is the transition from conventional fuel-powered buses to electric buses (e-buses), which, despite their environmental benefits, introduce significant operational challenges—chief among them, the management of battery systems, the most critical and complex component of e-buses. The development of efficient and reliable Battery Management Systems (BMSs) is thus central to ensuring battery longevity, operational safety, and overall vehicle performance. This study examines the potential of intelligent BMSs to improve battery health diagnostics, extend service life, and optimize system performance through the integration of simulation, real-time analytics, and advanced deep learning techniques. Particular emphasis is placed on the estimation of battery state of health (SoH), a key metric for predictive maintenance and operational planning. Two widely recognized deep learning models—Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)—are evaluated for their efficacy in predicting SoH. These models are embedded within a unified framework that combines synthetic data generated by a physics-informed battery simulation model with empirical measurements obtained from real-world battery aging datasets. The proposed approach demonstrates a viable pathway for enhancing SoH prediction by leveraging both simulation-based data augmentation and deep learning. Experimental evaluations confirm the effectiveness of the framework in handling diverse data inputs, thereby supporting more robust and scalable battery management solutions for next-generation electric urban transportation systems. Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) deployments in thermal power plants face significant energy efficiency challenges due to harsh operating conditions and device resource constraints. This paper presents gradient memory double-deep Q-network (GM-DDQN), a lightweight reinforcement learning approach for energy optimization on resource-constrained IIoT devices. At its core, GM-DDQN introduces the gradient memory mechanism, a novel memory-efficient alternative to experience replay. This core innovation, combined with a simplified neural network architecture and efficient parameter quantization, collectively reduces memory requirements by 99% and computation time by 85–90% compared to standard methods. Experimental evaluations across three realistic simulated thermal power plant scenarios demonstrate that GM-DDQN improves energy efficiency by 42% compared to fixed policies and 27% compared to threshold-based approaches, extending battery lifetime from 8–9 months to 14–15 months while maintaining 96–97% PSR. The method enables sophisticated reinforcement learning directly on IIoT edge devices without requiring cloud connectivity, reducing maintenance costs and improving monitoring reliability in industrial environments.
