430 stainless steel exhibits soft magnetic properties, excellent formability, and corrosion resistance, making it widely used in industrial applications. This study investigates the effects of different cold working rates on the properties of 430 stainless steel subjected to various magnetic annealing atmospheres (F-1.5Si, F-1.5Si-10%, F-1.5Si-40%, F-1.5Si-10% (MA), F-1.5Si-40% (MA), F-1.5Si-10% (H2), and F-1.5Si-40% (H2)). The results indicate that increasing the cold working rate improves the material’s mechanical properties; however, it negatively impacts its magnetic and corrosion resistance properties. Additionally, the magnetic annealing process improves the mechanical properties, while atmospheric magnetic annealing optimizes the overall magnetic performance. In contrast, magnetic annealing in a hydrogen atmosphere does not enhance the magnetic properties as effectively as atmospheric magnetic annealing. Still, it promotes the formation of a protective layer, preserving the mechanical properties and providing better corrosion resistance. Furthermore, regardless of whether magnetic annealing is conducted in an atmospheric or hydrogen environment, materials with 10% cold work rate (F-1.5Si-10% (MA) and F-1.5Si-10% (H2)) exhibit the lowest coercive force (286 and 293 A/m in the 10 Hz test condition), making them ideal for electromagnetic applications. The operation of heavy-haul railway trains with large loads results in significant cracking issues in reinforced concrete beams. Atmospheric carbon dioxide, oxygen, and moisture from the atmosphere penetrate into the beam interior through these cracks, accelerating the carbonation of the concrete and the corrosion of the steel bars. The rust-induced expansion of steel bars further exacerbates the cracking of the beam. The interaction between environmental factors and beam cracks leads to a rapid decline in the durability of the beam. To address this issue, a multi-physics field coupling durability assessment method was proposed, considering concrete beam cracking, concrete carbonation, and steel bar corrosion. The interaction among these three factors is achieved through sequential coupling, using crack width, carbonation passivation time, and steel bar corrosion rate as interaction parameters. Using this method, the deterioration morphology and stiffness degradation laws of 8 m reinforced concrete beams under different load conditions, including those of heavy and light trains in heavy-haul railways, are compared and assessed. The analysis reveals that within a 100-year service cycle, the maximum relative stiffness reduction for beams on the heavy train line is 20.0%, whereas for the light train line, it is only 7.4%. The degree of structural stiffness degradation is closely related to operational load levels, and beam cracking plays a critical role in this difference. Full article

Atmospheric corrosion significantly impacts infrastructure worldwide, with traditional assessment methods being time-intensive and costly. This study developed a comprehensive machine learning framework for predicting atmospheric corrosion rates using environmental and material parameters. Three regression models (Linear Regression, Random Forest, and Gradient Boosting) were trained on a scientifically informed synthetic dataset incorporating established corrosion principles from ISO 9223 standards and peer-reviewed literature. The Gradient Boosting model achieved superior performance with cross-validated R2 = 0.835 ± 0.024 and RMSE = 98.99 ± 16.62 μm/year, significantly outperforming the Random Forest (p < 0.001) and Linear Regression approaches. Feature importance analysis revealed the copper content (30%), exposure time (20%), and chloride deposition (15%) as primary predictors, consistent with the established principles of corrosion science. Model diagnostics demonstrated excellent predictive accuracy (R2 = 0.863) with normally distributed residuals and homoscedastic variance patterns. This methodology provides a systematic framework for ML-based corrosion prediction, with significant implications for protective coating design, material selection, and infrastructure risk assessment, pending comprehensive experimental validation. In this study, the atmospheric corrosion behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloy exposed in Sanya and Nansha for one year was investigated. While existing studies have characterized marine corrosion of magnesium alloys, the synergistic corrosion mechanisms under extreme tropical marine conditions (simultaneous high Cl, rainfall, and temperature fluctuations) remain poorly understood—particularly regarding dynamic corrosion–product evolution. The corrosion characteristics and behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloy exposed in Sanya and Nansha were evaluated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, electrochemical measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and weight loss tests. The results showed that the main components of corrosion products were MgCO3·xH2O(x = 3, 5), Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·4H2O, Mg2Cl(OH)3·4H2O, and Mg(OH)2. The corrosion rate exposed in the Nansha was 26.5 μm·y−1, which was almost two times than that in Sanya. Localized corrosion is the typical corrosion characteristic of AZ31 magnesium alloy in this tropical marine atmosphere. This study exposes the dynamic crack–regeneration mechanism of corrosion products under high-Cl-rainfall synergy. The corrosion types of AZ31 magnesium alloy in this tropical marine atmosphere were mainly represented by pitting corrosion and filamentous corrosion. Full article

Weathering steel (WS) is widely used in bridge construction due to its high corrosion resistance, durability, and low maintenance requirements. This paper reviews the performance of WS bridges in Canadian climates, focusing on the formation of protective patina, influencing factors, and long-term maintenance strategies. The protective patina, composed of stable iron oxyhydroxides, develops over time under favorable wet–dry cycles but can be disrupted by environmental aggressors such as chlorides, sulfur dioxide, and prolonged moisture exposure. Key alloying elements like Cu, Cr, Ni, and Nb enhance corrosion resistance, while design considerations—such as drainage optimization and avoidance of crevices—are critical for performance. The study highlights the vulnerability of WS bridges to microenvironments, including de-icing salt exposure, coastal humidity, and debris accumulation. Regular inspections and maintenance, such as debris removal, drainage system upkeep, and targeted cleaning, are essential to mitigate corrosion risks. Climate change exacerbates challenges, with rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and ocean acidification accelerating corrosion in coastal regions. Future research directions include optimizing WS compositions with advanced alloys (e.g., rare earth elements) and integrating climate-resilient design practices. This review highlights the need for a holistic approach combining material science, proactive maintenance, and adaptive design to ensure the longevity of WS bridges in evolving environmental conditions. The influence of the copper (Cu) content on the corrosion resistance of 3.5%Ni low-carbon weathering steel was investigated using periodic dry–wet cycle accelerated corrosion tests. The mechanical properties of the steels were assessed via tensile and low-temperature impact tests, while corrosion resistance was evaluated based on weight loss measurements. Surface oxide layers were characterized using three-dimensional laser confocal microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical methods. Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) was employed to examine the cross-sectional morphology of the oxide layer after 72 h of accelerated corrosion tests. The results indicate that the solution state of Cu increased the strength of 3.5%Ni steels but significantly damaged the low-temperature toughness. As the Cu content increased from 0.75% to 1.25%, the corrosion rate decreased from 4.65 to 3.74 g/m2 h. However, when there was a further increase in the Cu content to 2.15%, there was little decrease in the corrosion rate. With the increase in the Cu content from 0.75% to 2.15%, the surface roughness of 3.5%Ni weathering steel after corrosion decreased from 5.543 to 5.019 μm, and the corrosion behavior was more uniform. Additionally, the α/γ protective factor of the oxide layer of the surface layer increased from 2.58 to 2.84 with an increase in the Cu content from 0.75% to 1.25%, resulting in the oxide layer of the surface layer being more protective. For 1.25%Cu steel, the corrosion current density of rusted samples is lower (ranging from 1.2609 × 10−4 A/cm2 to 3.7376 × 10−4 A/cm2), and the corrosion potential is higher (ranging from −0.85544 V to −0.40243 V). Therefore, the rusted samples are more corrosion resistant. The Cu in the oxide layer of the surface layer forms CuO and CuFeO2, which are helpful for increasing corrosion resistance, which inhibits the penetration of Cl. Full article

Corrosion-related failures have emerged as a critical driver of premature support bolt failures in underground mines, emphasizing the urgency of understanding the phenomenon with respect to enhancing safety in underground environments. This study investigated key factors influencing bolt degradation through extensive experimental evaluation of cable bolts in simulated underground bolt environments. Multi-stranded cable specimens were exposed to saturated clay, coal, mine water, and grout/cement environments. Water samples were collected weekly from critical packing sections and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, and dissolved oxygen. The mineralogy and atmospheric conditions were identified as principal corrosion factors, and clay-rich and coal matrices accelerated corrosion, linked to high ion mobility and oxygen diffusion. Secondary factors correlated context-dependently: pH was negatively associated with corrosion in mineral-packed environments, while conductivity was correlated with non-mineral matrices. Notably, multi-stranded cables exhibited higher localized galvanic corrosion in inter-strand zones, highlighting design vulnerabilities. This work provides pioneering evidence that geological conditions are primary drivers for corrosion-related failures, offering actionable guidance for corrosion mitigation strategies in mining infrastructure. This study investigates the development of silver (Ag)-doped zirconia (ZrO2) coatings deposited on 316LVM stainless steel via the unbalanced magnetron sputtering technique. The oxygen content in the Ar/O2 gas mixture was systematically varied (12.5%, 25%, 37.5%, and 50%) to assess its influence on the resulting coating properties. In response to the growing demand for biomedical implants with improved durability and biocompatibility, the objective was to develop coatings that enhance both wear and corrosion resistance in physiological environments. The effects of silver incorporation and oxygen concentration on the structural, tribological, and electrochemical behavior of the coatings were systematically analyzed. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was employed to identify crystalline phases, while atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to characterize surface topography prior to wear testing. Wear resistance was evaluated using a ball-on-plane tribometer under simulated prosthetic motion, applying a 5 N load with a bone pin as the counter body. Corrosion resistance was assessed through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in a physiological solution. Additionally, tribocorrosive performance was investigated by coupling tribological and electrochemical tests in Ringer’s lactate solution, simulating dynamic in vivo contact conditions. The results demonstrate that Ag doping, combined with increased oxygen content in the sputtering atmosphere, significantly improves both wear and corrosion resistance. Notably, the ZrO2-Ag coating deposited with 50% O2 exhibited the lowest wear volume (0.086 mm3) and a minimum coefficient of friction (0.0043) under a 5 N load. This same coating also displayed superior electrochemical performance, with the highest charge transfer resistance (38.83 kΩ·cm2) and the lowest corrosion current density (3.32 × 10−8 A/cm2). These findings confirm the high structural integrity and outstanding tribocorrosive behavior of the coating, highlighting its potential for application in biomedical implant technology. Full article

We present a corrosion-resistant quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer (QIT-MS) designed for trace detection of volatiles in sulfuric acid aerosols, with a specific focus on phosphine (PH3). Here, we detail the gas calibration methodology using permeation tube technology for generating certified ppb-level PH3/H2S/CO2 mixtures, and report results from mass spectra with sufficient resolution to distinguish isotopic envelopes that validate the detection of PH3 at a concentration of 62 ppb. Fragmentation patterns for PH3 and H2S agree with NIST data, and signal-to-noise performance confirms ppb sensitivity over 2.6 h acquisition periods. We further assess spectral interferences from oxygen isotopes and propose a detection scheme based on isolated phosphorus ions (P+) to enable specific and interference-resistant identification of PH3 and other reduced phosphorus species of astrobiological interest in Venus-like environments. This work extends the capabilities of QIT-MS for trace gas analysis in chemically aggressive atmospheric conditions. Full article

Glass curators often question how their treatments affect the long-term stability of historical glass. While damp cotton swabs are commonly used to remove surface salts and dust, the use of water remains controversial, particularly for heavily altered glass, due to concerns about worsening hydration. This study investigates the effect of water rinsing on an unstable soda-lime glass altered for six months (monoliths) and fifteen months (powders) at 35 °C and 85% relative humidity. Samples were then rinsed with Milli-Q water at 20 °C or 50 °C, and the monolithic glass was subsequently subjected to an additional 15 months of alteration under the same conditions. The glass surface was characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as Raman spectroscopy to identify the nature of the salts. The evolution of the hydrated layer was assessed using transmission FTIR, Raman and solid-state NMR spectroscopies, ToF-SIMS, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results show that rinsing effectively removes surface salts—primarily sodium carbonate—and induces structural changes in the hydrated layer, promoting silicate network polymerization. Upon resuming alteration, rinsed monolithic samples exhibit no further degradation after the additional 15 months of alteration. These findings offer promising insights for conservation practices and may help curators refining their treatment strategies for altered glass. Full article

To investigate the corrosion resistance of 60Si2MnA spring steel coated with Zn-Al in a domestic atmospheric environment containing harmful salts, the corrosion environmental factors (temperature, humidity, deposited salts, and pH) were obtained through field research. The deliquescence and weathering behavior of harmful salts were studied using impedance methods to establish their characteristic curves. Additionally, a self-designed salt deposition test apparatus was employed to conduct accelerated atmospheric corrosion tests under constant salt deposition (10 g/m2) and controlled temperature and humidity conditions (20 °C/75% RH and 40 °C/75% RH) over different corrosion periods. The results show that noticeable red rust appeared on the samples after one month of corrosion. As the temperature increased, the consumption of the coating accelerated. XRD and Raman analyses reveal that the main corrosion products of the coating materials were ZnO, Zn(OH)2, and Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6, while the red rust primarily consisted of iron oxides and hydroxides. In the early stages of corrosion, the self-corrosion current density was relatively low due to the protective effects of the coating and the corrosion product layer, indicating good corrosion resistance. However, in the later stages, the integrity of the coating and the corrosion product layer deteriorated, leading to a significant increase in the self-corrosion current density and a decline in corrosion resistance. This study provides a data foundation for understanding the corrosion behavior of Zn-Al-coated spring steel in atmospheric environments and offers theoretical insights for developing more corrosion-resistant coatings and optimizing anti-corrosion measures. Atmospheric corrosion, especially in coastal environments, presents a major challenge for the long-term durability of metallic and concrete infrastructure due to chloride deposition from marine aerosols. With a significant portion of the global population residing in coastal zones—often associated with intense industrial activity—there is growing demand for accurate and early corrosion prediction methods. Traditional standards for assessing atmospheric corrosivity depend on long-term empirical data, limiting their usefulness during the design stage of infrastructure projects. To address this limitation, this study develops predictive models using machine-learning techniques, namely gradient boosting, support vector machine, and neural networks, to estimate chloride deposition levels based on easily accessible climatic and geographical parameters. Our models were trained on a comprehensive dataset that included variables such as land coverage, wind speed, and orientation. Among the models tested, tree-based algorithms, particularly gradient boosting, provided the highest prediction accuracy (F1 score: 0.8673). Time-Dependent Fragility Functions and Post-Earthquake Residual Seismic Performance for Existing Steel Frame Columns in Offshore Atmospheric Environment

This paper evaluates the time-dependent fragility and post-earthquake residual seismic performance of existing steel frame columns in offshore atmospheric environments. Based on experimental research, the seismic failure mechanism and deterioration laws of the seismic behavior of corroded steel frame columns were revealed. A finite element analysis (FEA) method for steel frame columns, which considers corrosion damage and ductile metal damage criteria, is developed and validated. A parametric analysis in terms of service age and design parameters is conducted. Considering the impact of environmental erosion and aging, a classification criterion for damage states for existing steel frame columns is proposed, and the theoretical characterization of each damage state is provided based on the moment-rotation skeleton curves. Based on the test and numerical analysis results, probability distributions of the fragility function parameters (median and logarithmic standard deviation) are constructed. The evolution laws of the fragility parameters with increasing service age under each damage state are determined, and a time-dependent fragility model for existing steel frame columns in offshore atmospheric environments is presented through regression analysis. At a drift ratio of 4%, the probability of complete damage to columns with 40, 50, 60, and 70-year service ages increased by 18.1%, 45.3%, 79.2%, and 124.5%, respectively, compared with columns within a 30-year service age. Based on the developed FEA models and the damage class of existing columns, the influence of characteristic variables (service age, design parameters, and damage level) on the residual seismic capacity of earthquake-damaged columns, namely the seismic resistance that can be maintained even after suffering earthquake damage, is revealed. Using the particle swarm optimization back-propagation neural network (PSO-BPNN) model, nonlinear mapping relationships between the characteristic variables and residual seismic capacity are constructed, thereby proposing a residual seismic performance evaluation model for existing multi-aged steel frame columns in an offshore atmospheric environment. Combined with the damage probability matrix of the time-dependent fragility, the expected values of the residual seismic capacity of existing multi-aged steel frame columns at a given drift ratio are obtained directly in a probabilistic sense. The results of this study lay the foundation for resistance to sequential earthquakes and post-earthquake functional recovery and reconstruction, and provide theoretical support for the full life-cycle seismic resilience assessment of existing steel structures in earthquake-prone areas. Piezodynamic Behavior of HA-BT Osteoconductive Coatings Under LIPUS Stimulation in Lab-on-a-Chip Model: A Promising Strategy for Bone Regeneration

Bone regeneration demands biomaterials capable of supporting tissue integration and mimicking the native piezodynamic properties of bone. In this study, hydroxyapatite–barium titanate (HA-BT) composite coatings with varying BT content (10, 30, and 50 wt%) were developed to enhance the piezoelectric response and corrosion resistance of Ti6Al4V implants. The coatings were synthesized via high-energy ball milling and atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). XRD analysis with Rietveld refinement confirmed the presence of HA along with secondary phases (TTCP, β-TCP, CaO). Electrochemical tests revealed lower corrosion current densities for the coatings containing ≤30% BT, indicating improved stability in physiological environments. Cytotoxicity assays (MTT) demonstrated biocompatibility across all formulations. Piezoresponse force microscopy (DART-SS-PFM) confirmed enhanced d33-eff values for the 50% BT coating (>15 pm/V); however, biological assays under low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) stimulation showed increased osteocalcin expression for ≤30% BT, while 50% BT induced cellular stress. Overall, HA-BT coatings with up to 30% BT exhibited optimal electrochemical stability, favorable piezoelectric performance, and enhanced biological response, underscoring their potential for orthopedic implant applications and regenerative tissue engineering. Human development has led to increased production of oil and gas, mainly as energy sources, which, however, are responsible for contamination and metal corrosion in industrial, marine, and terrestrial environments. Lubricating oil, in particular, is widely used in generators and industrial machines in the electric sector and is responsible for contamination not only in industrial environments but also in many terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. In this context, this study aimed to apply the Starmerella bombicola ATCC 222214 biosurfactant to inhibit metal corrosion in seawater and in an Accelerated Corrosion Chamber (ACC). For this purpose, its toxicity against the microcrustacean Artemia salina, its dispersion capacity, and its ability to promote oil biodegradation in a saline environment were investigated. The biosurfactant, when applied at twice its Critical Micellar Concentration (CMC), caused low mortality (30.0%) of microcrustaceans in a saline environment, and, in its crude form, the biosurfactant ensured the dispersion of no less than 77.56% of residual engine oil in seawater. Oil biodegradation by autochthonous microorganisms reached 94.39% in the presence of the biosurfactant in seawater. Furthermore, the biosurfactant, when used at twice its CMC, acted satisfactorily as a corrosion inhibitor by reducing the mass loss of galvanized iron specimens (plates) in seawater in a static system to only 0.36%. On the other hand, when the biosurfactant was added at the CMC as an atmospheric corrosion inhibitor, the reduction in mass loss of carbon steel plates treated in the ACC was 17.38% compared to the control containing only a biodegradable matrix based on vegetable resin. When the biosurfactant was incorporated into different paints applied to galvanized iron plates placed in contact with the salt spray produced in the ACC, the best result was obtained using the biomolecule at a concentration of 3% in the satin paint, ensuring a plate mass loss (29.236 g/m2) that was almost half that obtained without surfactant (52.967 g/m2). The study indicated the use of yeast biosurfactant as a sustainable alternative in combating the contamination of marine environments and metal corrosion, with the aim of preserving the environment and improving the quality of life in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
