Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the mean age of eruption of permanent teeth and their clinical emergence sequence in a longitudinal sample of children from a multi-ethnic urban population. Methods: A total of 854 children (413 females and 441 males), aged between 4 and 13 years, were examined annually for a minimum of 4 consecutive years, as part of their annual dental screening appointment. The presence of permanent teeth was recorded at each examination. Mean and median ages, with standard deviations, of individual tooth eruption were calculated, in addition to the eruption sequence, and the analysis of the data was performed using the lognormal distribution model. Regarding the error of the method, two examiners reviewed all relevant dental screening forms, and any discrepancies were resolved through consultation with the senior author. Results: The sequence of permanent tooth eruption followed a consistent pattern across sexes, with distinct differences between the maxillary and mandibular arches. In the maxilla, eruption began with the first molar, while in the mandible, it started with the central incisor. Mandibular teeth generally erupted earlier than maxillary teeth, with girls experiencing earlier eruption than boys, with some exceptions, and prolonged eruption periods. No statistically significant differences were found in the timing of eruption between contralateral homologous teeth. Conclusions: Based on the present data, the observed sequence of tooth eruption in a multi-ethnic urban population showed similar patterns across sexes. Mandibular teeth generally erupt earlier than maxillary teeth, with girls experiencing earlier eruption than boys. Full article

Background: Breast cancer is the most prevalent malignancy among women globally. In Romania, it is the most frequent form of cancer affecting women, with approximately 12,000 new cases diagnosed annually, and the second most common cause of cancer-related mortality, second only to lung cancer. Methods: This study looked at 79 breast cancer patients from Oltenia, concentrating on epidemiology, histology, diagnostic features, and treatments. Patients were chosen based on inclusion criteria such as histopathologically verified diagnosis, availability of clinical and treatment data, and follow-up information. The analyzed biological material consisted of tissue samples taken from the breast parenchyma and axillary lymph nodes. Even though not the primary subject of this paper, all patients underwent immunohistochemical (IHC) evaluation both preoperatively and postoperatively. Results: We found invasive ductal carcinoma to be the predominant type, while ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and mixed types were rare. We performed cross-tabulations of metastasis versus nodal status and age versus therapy type; none reached significance (all p > 0.05), suggesting observed differences were likely due to chance. A chi-square test comparing surgical interventions (breast-conserving vs. mastectomy) in patients who did or did not receive chemotherapy showed, χ2 = 3.17, p = 0.367, indicating that chemotherapy did not significantly influence surgical choice. Importantly, adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy were used at similar rates across age groups, whereas neoadjuvant hormonal (endocrine) therapy was more common in older patients (but without statistical significance). Conclusions: Finally, we discussed the consequences of individualized care and early detection. Romania’s shockingly low screening rate, which contributes to delayed diagnosis, emphasizes the importance of improved population medical examination and tailored treatment options. Also, the country has one of the lowest rates of mammography uptake in Europe and no systematic population screening program. Full article

Background: Cardiac involvement is common in Fabry disease (FD) and typically manifests with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Patients with FD are frequently misdiagnosed, and this is mainly related to the lack of disease awareness among clinicians. The aim of this study was to determine whether providing a targeted educational intervention on FD may enhance FD diagnosis. Methods. This research was designed as a single-arm before-and-after intervention study and evaluated the impact of providing a specific training on FD to cardiologists from different Italian centers, without experience in rare diseases. In the 12-month period after the educational intervention, the rate of FD screening and diagnosis was assessed and compared with those conducted in the two years preceding the study initiation. Results: Fifteen cardiologists participated to this study, receiving a theoretical and practical training on FD. In the two previous two years, they conducted 12 FD screening (6/year), and they did not detect any cases of FD. After the training, they performed 45 FD screenings, with an eight-fold rise in the annual screening rate. The screened population (age: 61 ± 11 years, men: 82%) was mainly composed of patients with unexplained LVH (n = 43). There were four new FD diagnoses and, among of them, three had a late-onset GLA variant. After the cascade genetic screening, 11 affected relatives and 8 heterozygous carriers were also detected. Conclusions: A targeted educational intervention for cardiologists allowed the identification of four new families with FD. Enhancing FD awareness is helpful to reduce the diagnostic and therapeutic delay. Full article

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) trends have evolved due to changing screening practices. This study assessed long-term trends in PCa incidence and survival according to Gleason score (GS) in Friuli Venezia Giulia, northeastern Italy. Methods: A population-based study was conducted, encompassing 21,571 PCa cases from the regional Cancer Registry, diagnosed between 2000 and 2020. Age-standardized incidence rates and 5-year overall (OS) and net survival (NS) were assessed by GS (2–6, 7, 8–10) and age group (<65, 65–74, ≥75). Trends were analyzed using Joinpoint regression. Results: PCa incidence increased from 2000 to 2007 (Annual Percent Change, APC = +1.8%), then declined sharply until 2010 (APC = −7.6%) and remained stable thereafter. Incidence of low-grade cancers (GS 2–6) decreased across all age groups, especially in men aged ≥ 75 years (APC = −8.1%). The incidence of GS 7 rose until 2007 and then stabilized. High-grade cancers (GS 8–10) showed a stable incidence, but their proportion increased from 20% to 29%, mainly in older men. Survival improved across all GS groups. For GS 2–6, OS increased from 81.4% to 88.2%; for GS 7, from 78.1% to 88.1%. GS 8–10 had smaller gains, but NS reached 82% in recent years. Among men aged ≥ 75 years, OS for GS 7 rose from 51.9% to 78.1%, and for GS 8–10, from 43.9% to 54.4%. NS remained high for GS ≤ 7. Conclusions: While overall outcomes improved, the increasing proportion of high-grade PCa, despite a stable incidence, raises concerns, particularly in older men, and calls for tailored clinical strategies. Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is a leading preventable cause of neurocognitive impairment. Its incidence appears to be rising in several countries. We analysed 27 years of newborn-screening data (1997–2023) from the largest Chilean screening centre, covering 3,225,216 newborns (51.1% of national births), to characterise temporal trends and potential drivers of CH incidence. Annual CH incidence was modelled with Prais–Winsten regression to correct for first-order autocorrelation; additional models assessed trends in gestational age, sex, biochemical markers, and aetiological subtypes. We identified 1550 CH cases, giving a mean incidence of 4.9 per 10,000 live births and a significant yearly increase of 0.067 per 10,000 (95 % CI 0.037–0.098; p < 0.001). Mild cases (confirmation TSH < 20 mU/L) rose (+0.89 percentage points per year; p = 0.002). The program’s recall was low (0.05%). Over time, screening and diagnostic TSH values declined, total and free T4 concentrations rose, gestational age at diagnosis fell, and a shift from thyroid ectopy toward hypoplasia emerged; no regional differences were detected. The sustained increase in CH incidence, alongside falling TSH thresholds and growing detection of in situ glands, suggests enhanced recognition of milder disease. Ongoing surveillance should integrate environmental, iodine-nutrition, and genetic factors to clarify the causes of this trend. Full article

Background: Bulgaria carries a high burden of colorectal cancer (CRC) but, at the start of this study, lacked a nationwide organized screening program. Understanding specialist views (particularly on mail-based fecal testing) is essential for effective policy development. Objective: The objective is to assess the attitudes towards, practices of, and perceived barriers to CRC screening among Bulgarian gastroenterologists, with a focus on the feasibility of mail-based fecal occult blood testing (FOBT). Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 38 gastroenterologists examined clinical use of FOBT, screening method preferences, and perceived systemic and patient-level barriers to CRC screening. Results: Among respondents, 57.89% reported using FOBT in clinical practice, and 71.05% indicated they would undergo the test themselves and recommend it to relatives. Colonoscopy was the preferred diagnostic tool for 84.21% of participants; however, the existing literature raises concerns about its feasibility for large-scale population screening. Key systemic barriers, rated on a 5-point Likert scale, included financial constraints (mean = 3.08), inadequate infrastructure (2.89), and healthcare workforce shortages (2.71). Patient-level barriers were led by low health literacy (4.13), lack of motivation (3.95), and procedural fears (3.26). A majority (84.38%) believed that mail-based FOBT would increase screening uptake, and 57.89% supported annual distribution of test kits. Nearly all respondents (97.37%) favored initiating screening at age 50. Conclusions: This study highlights strong support among Bulgarian gastroenterologists for a national CRC screening program, with particular endorsement of mail-based FOBT. Despite acknowledged systemic and population-level barriers, the findings suggest that such an approach could increase screening coverage, promote early detection, and support the strategic rollout of Bulgaria’s emerging cancer control initiatives. This paper examines the operational consequences and energy demands associated with the growing cultural diversity of air travellers at airport security checkpoints. The analysis focuses on how an increasing proportion of passengers requiring enhanced security screening, due to cultural, religious, or linguistic factors, affects both system throughput and energy consumption. The methodology integrates synchronised measurement of passenger flow with real-time monitoring of electricity usage. Four operational scenarios, representing incremental shares (0–15%) of passengers subject to extended screening, were modelled. The findings indicate that a 15% increase in this passenger group leads to a statistically significant rise in average power consumption per device (3.5%), a total energy usage increase exceeding 4%, and an extension of average service time by 0.6%—the cumulative effect results in a substantial annual contribution to the airport’s carbon footprint. The results also reveal a higher frequency and intensity of power consumption peaks, emphasising the need for advanced infrastructure management. The study emphasises the significance of predictive analytics, dynamic resource allocation, and the implementation of energy-efficient technologies. Furthermore, systematic intercultural competency training is recommended for security staff. These insights provide a scientific basis for optimising airport security operations amid increasing passenger heterogeneity. Full article

The city of Al Ain is a fast-developing area. With building typology varying from low-rise to mid-rise, sustainable design in buildings is needed. As the majority of the city’s population is Emirati Citizens, the percentage of expats is increasing. The expats tend to live in mid-rise buildings. One of the central midrise areas is AL Ain Square. This study aims to investigate how an optimized mashrabiya pattern can impact the energy and the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) in a 3-bedroom apartment, fully oriented to the south, of an expat family. The methodology is as follows: case study selection, Weather analysis, Modeling/Validation of the base case scenario, Optimization of the mashrabiya pattern, Simulation of various scenarios, and Results. Analyzing the selected case study is the initial step of the methodology. This analysis begins with the district, building typology, and the chosen apartment. The weather analysis is relevant for using the mashrabiya (screen device) and the need to improve energy consumption and thermal comfort. The modeling of the base case shall be performed in Rhino Grasshopper. The validation is based on a one-year electricity bill provided by the owner. The optimization of mashrabiya patterns is an innovative process, where various designs are compared and then optimized to select the most efficient pattern. The solutions to the selected scenarios will then yield the results of the optimal scenario. This study is relevant to industry, academia, and local authorities as an innovative approach to retrofitting buildings. Additionally, the research presents a creative vision that suggests optimized mashrabiya patterns can significantly enhance energy savings, with the hexagonal grid configuration demonstrating the highest efficiency. This finding highlights the potential for geometry-driven shading optimization tailored to specific climatic and building conditions. Contrasting earlier mashrabiya studies that assess one static pattern, we couple a geometry-agnostic evolutionary solver with a utility-calibrated EnergyPlus model to test thousands of square, hexagonal, and triangular permutations. This workflow uncovers a previously undocumented non-linear depth perforation interaction. It validates a hexagonal screen that reduces annual cooling energy by 12.3%, establishing a replicable, grid-specific retrofit method for hot-arid apartments. Full article

Background: Cervical cancer is a major global health concern, causing approximately 350,000 deaths annually. It is also preventable through effective prevention and early detection. To facilitate elimination, the World Health Organization (WHO) set targets for HPV vaccination, screening, and treatment. Achieving these goals requires frameworks to monitor screening program performance. As many regions transition to HPV primary screening, a standardized Cervical Cancer Screening Cascade can track performance, identify gaps in follow-up, and optimize resource allocation. Methods: This paper introduces a structured cascade developed to monitor uptake, retention, and outcomes in HPV-based screening programs. The Cascade was created through collaboration between public health experts, clinicians, and researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC), the Women’s Health Research Institute, and BC Cancer. Results: The Cascade outlines four phases: screening, triage, detection, and treatment. Each phase includes two substages: “uptake” and “results,” with an additional substage in screening (“invitation”). “Screening” assesses invitation effectiveness and participation. “Triage” tracks follow-up after a positive screen. “Detection” evaluates attendance at diagnostic appointments, and “Treatment” measures the treatment rate for those with precancerous lesions. Conclusions: The Cascade can guide emerging and existing HPV screening programs within Canada and other similarly resourced settings and serve as a benchmark tool for programs to assess their progress towards cervical cancer elimination. To ensure food security in Xinjiang, scientifically conducting land suitability evaluation is of significant importance. This paper takes an arid and ecologically fragile region of southern Xinjiang—Qiemu County—as an example. Based on the optimized Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) model, 14 multi-source environmental variables including climate, soil, hydrology, and topography are integrated. The ENMeval package is used to optimize the model parameters, and Spearman’s rank correlation analysis is employed to screen key variables. The spatial distribution of land suitability and the dominant factors are systematically assessed. The results show that the model AUC values for the mountainous and plain areas are 0.987 and 0.940, respectively, indicating high accuracy. In the plain area, land suitability is primarily influenced by the soil sand content, while in the mountainous region, the annual accumulated temperature plays a leading role. The highly suitable areas are mainly distributed in the northern plains and parts of the southern mountains. This study clarifies the suitable areas for land development and environmental thresholds, providing a scientific basis for the development of land resources in arid regions and the implementation of the “store grain in the land” strategy. Catalpa bungei C. A. Mey, an economically and ecologically important tree species endemic to China, exhibits notable drought resistance; however, the spatial dynamics of its habitat under future climate change have not been thoroughly investigated. We employed a parameter-optimized MaxEnt modeling framework to project current and future suitable habitats for C. bungei under two Shared Socioeconomic Pathway scenarios, SSP126 (low-emission) and SSP585 (high-emission), based on CMIP6 climate data. We incorporated 126 spatially rarefied occurrence records and 22 environmental variables into a rigorous modeling workflow that included multicollinearity assessment and systematic variable screening. Parameter optimization was performed using the kuenm package in R version 4.2.3, and the best-performing model configuration was selected (Regularization Multiplier = 2.5; Feature Combination = LQT) based on the AICc, omission rate, and evaluation metrics (AUC, TSS, and Kappa). Model validation demonstrated robust predictive accuracy. Four primary environmental predictors obtained from WorldClim version 2.1—the minimum temperature of the coldest month (Bio6), annual precipitation (Bio12), maximum temperature of the warmest month (Bio5), and elevation—collectively explained over 90% of habitat suitability. Currently, the optimal habitats are concentrated in central and eastern China. By the 2090s, the total suitable habitats are projected to increase by approximately 4.25% under SSP126 and 18.92% under SSP585, coupled with a significant northwestward shift in the habitat centroid. Conversely, extremely suitable habitats are expected to markedly decline, particularly in southern China, due to escalating climatic stress. These findings highlight the need for adaptive afforestation planning and targeted conservation strategies to enhance the climate resilience of C. bungei under future climate change. Full article

In November 2024, the fourth annual Symposium focusing on early-age onset cancer (EAOC) was hosted by the Colorectal Cancer Resource & Action Network (CCRAN), assembling clinicians, researchers, and patients virtually to discuss challenges in early detection and diagnosis of individuals afflicted with EAOC across tumour types. The meeting addressed the rising rates of EAOC and identified strategies to overcome barriers to timely detection and diagnosis by closing gaps in public and healthcare provider knowledge on symptoms of cancer in younger adults and reducing inequities in standard screening for younger age groups. Discussions also encompassed the various factors that serve as impediments to accessing diagnostic testing and obtaining results, as well as the critical need for access to diagnostics such as comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP), the results of which could be imperative in helping to guide clinical decisions regarding effective and well-tolerated targeted therapies. The Symposium generated key calls to action regarding increasing EAOC education and awareness among primary care providers and the public, re-evaluation of cancer screening programs’ eligibility criteria to include younger populations, and mechanisms to reduce waiting times for diagnostic testing by addressing technologist shortages and improving access to CGP through national collaborative strategies and increased funding. Background: Salmonella infections impose a substantial global health burden, with an estimated 95.1 million cases occurring annually. Pregnant women exhibit a heightened vulnerability due to pregnancy-specific immune adaptations and dietary habits that increase their risk of Salmonella exposure, facilitating possible damage to the placental barrier. Despite this significant burden, Salmonella-associated placental pathology remains poorly understood, particularly its impact on foetal development through microstructural alterations. Aim: This study utilised stereology to assess histomorphological and functional alterations in term placentae of Salmonella Typhi-exposed placentae, compared to unexposed controls. Methods: A hospital-based case-control study was conducted in Ghana. Of 237 screened women, 62 placentae were selected for analysis, comprising 31 Salmonella-exposed cases (IgG/IgM-positive in placental and cord blood) and 31 gestational age-matched controls (IgG/IgM-negative). Placental tissues were processed for histology and stereology. Neonatal birthweights were also compared. Results: Stereological assessment revealed significantly higher mean volume densities of syncytial knots in the study group (0.4755 ± 0.04) compared to the controls (0.3342 ± 0.04, p = 0.0219). Syncytial denudation was increased in the study group (0.8113 ± 0.09) relative to the controls (0.1975 ± 0.08, p < 0.0001). Foetal capillary volume density was also significantly elevated in the study group (5.1010 ± 0.32) compared to the controls (3.562 ± 0.47, p < 0.0001). In contrast, intervillous space volume was significantly reduced in the study group (9.5810 ± 0.05) compared to the controls (11.593 ± 0.26, p = 0.0053). Neonates of exposed mothers showed a non-significant reduction in birthweight. Conclusion: Salmonella Typhi exposure in pregnancy induces subtle, yet significant alterations in placental architecture, compromising villous integrity and vascular organisation. Although birthweight may appear unaffected, the observed changes point to reduced placental efficiency and merit further research into their developmental consequences and long-term effects on babies. Introduction: Lung cancer (LC) is the leading cause of cancer mortality and is responsible for 1.8 million deaths annually. The early identification of risk factors, particularly smoking, is essential in improving outcomes. Public health campaigns play a crucial role in raising awareness, but misinformation and resource limitations hinder their effectiveness. This study evaluates the impact of a public awareness campaign on Saudi citizens’ understanding of lung cancer (LC) risks and screening. Methods: An interventional study was conducted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, using pre- and post-campaign self-administered surveys. A total of 1,426 participants aged 18 or older were surveyed either before or after the campaign. A matching approach was used to control for confounding variables. Each participant may receive a maximum total score of 14 for their knowledge of lung cancer and a maximum total score of 10 for their awareness of lung cancer screening. Results: A total of 713 participants were surveyed pre-campaign, and 859 post-campaign). After matching, 308 participants remained for the analysis, with no significant demographic differences between those who were surveyed before and after the campaign. Post-campaign, awareness was significantly improved, which is reflected in an increase in accurate responses to key statements. The median knowledge scores increased from 11.0 to 23.0, indicating a substantial increase in understanding. Conclusions: The campaign effectively enhanced the awareness of LC risk factors and screening. However, new misconceptions regarding universal screening emerged, emphasizing the need for clear messaging. Future initiatives should address socioeconomic and gender disparities, promote collaborative decision-making, and implement long-term educational strategies. These findings align with previous research and highlight areas for improvement in public health outreach. Full article

Phenolic compounds are important targets in olive breeding due to their health benefits and impact on fruit and oil quality. Fruit phenolic profiling enables efficient screening of large germplasm collections without oil extraction, but environmental variability, especially year-to-year differences, affects their expression. The aim of this study was to assess the genotypic influence on fruit phenolic composition, based on a three-year evaluation of 10 wild olive genotypes and 75 cultivars from an olive core collection. Each genotype was sampled in at least two seasons, with 1 to 3 trees analyzed annually. Variance analysis revealed significant genetic variation among cultivars and notable genotype-by-year interactions for certain phenolics. Broad-sense heritability was generally high for most compounds, although some, such as ligstroside and ligstroside aglycone, showed greater environmental sensitivity. Best linear unbiased predictions (BLUPs) were highly correlated with average relative phenotypic values. Clustering analyses identified strong associations among key phenolic compounds and highlighted distinct metabolic profiles separating wild and cultivated genotypes, reflecting differences in phenolic accumulation patterns. These findings demonstrate the genetic and environmental influences on olive fruit phenolics and provide reliable estimates to support future marker-assisted selection studies aimed at developing useful tools in olive breeding programs.
