Analysis of variations in the components of the Earth’s magnetic field, recorded at the magnetic observatory of the Institute of Ionosphere (Almaty, Kazakhstan) during the earthquakes of 22 January 2024 and 4 March 2024, showed that these fluctuations were not related to intrinsic variations in the magnetic field itself, but rather to mechanical oscillations of the magnetometer together with its support. Evidence supporting the seismokinetic origin of the variations in the vector magnetometer was the discrepancy between the total magnetic field measured by the absolute magnetometer and the total magnetic field calculated from the vector magnetometer readings. Equations were derived that relate variations in the components of the magnetic field to the tilt angles of the sensor, enabling the determination of the direction of arrival of seismic shock waves. Azimuths of earthquake epicenters were calculated from oscillations observed in magnetogram records for several events, and these were compared with azimuths obtained from a network of seismic stations. It is shown that, in order to improve the accuracy of geomagnetic field measurements—required for the study of seismoelectric and seismomagnetic phenomena, as well as for identifying earthquake precursors—the design of magnetic observatories should be supplemented with an inclinometer to enable correction of vector magnetometer measurement results. In this paper, we investigate the propagation properties of a partially coherent Gaussian Schell-model (GSM) beam by effective beam parameters in oceanic turbulence. We provide detailed analytical derivations based on the extended Huygens–Fresnel integral and the cross-spectral density function. It is found that the angle-of-arrival fluctuation, spreading, and wander of the partially coherent GSM beam decrease with increasing source coherence parameter and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate, and with decreasing temperature fluctuations and mean-square temperature dissipation rate. At 200 m propagation distance, the relative mean-squared width under salinity-dominated conditions (ω = −2) is approximately 0.02% larger than that under temperature-dominated conditions (ω = −5), indicating that salinity fluctuations cause more obvious beam spreading. Microwave wireless power transfer (MWPT) for space solar power stations (SSPS) requires high-precision beam pointing in order to maintain effective aperture coupling and transmission efficiency under platform motion and disturbances. This paper proposes a dual-link beam pointing estimation framework that integrates guidance-link interferometric angle-of-arrival (AoA) measurements with power-link energy-field reconstruction. The interferometric chain provides high-rate azimuth and elevation observations for dynamic tracking, while the energy-field reconstruction estimates the energy-centroid displacement from the received-aperture power distribution to correct steady-state pointing bias. A Kalman filter (KF) is developed to fuse the asynchronous multi-rate measurements, yielding continuous and robust pointing estimates for closed-loop beam control. Simulation results show that the proposed fusion method achieves azimuth and elevation RMSEs of 0.0069° and 0.006° with interferometric and energy-centroid error levels of approximately 0.05° and 0.02°, respectively, significantly reducing high-frequency fluctuations. In addition, a sensitivity model is established to quantify the impact of angular errors on capture efficiency. The expected efficiency improves from approximately 0.988 and 0.998 for the individual methods to nearly unity for the fusion output. Quantitative accuracy thresholds corresponding to different efficiency requirements are further derived, providing practical guidelines for SSPS MWPT system design. Full article

Recently, free-space optical (FSO) communication systems utilizing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) relays have garnered significant attention. Integrating UAV relays into FSO communication and employing cooperative diversity techniques not only fulfill the need for long-distance transmission but also enable flexible adjustments of relay positions based on the actual environment. This paper investigates the performance of a parallel-UAV-relay-based FSO communication system. In the considered system, the channel fadings include atmospheric loss, atmospheric turbulence, pointing errors, and angle-of-arrival fluctuation. Using the established channel model, we derive a tractable expression for the probability density function of the total channel gain. Then, we derive closed-form expressions of the system outage probability (OP) and average bit error rate (ABER). Moreover, we also derive the asymptotic OP and ABER for a high-optical-intensity regime. Our numerical results validate the accuracy of the derived theoretical expressions. Additionally, the effects of the number of relay nodes, the field of view, the direction deviation, the signal-to-noise ratio threshold, the atmospheric turbulence intensity, the transmit power, and the transmission distance on the system’s performance are also discussed. Optical communication is a critical technology for future deep space exploration, offering substantial advantages in transmission capacity and spectrum utilization. This paper establishes a comprehensive theoretical framework for avalanche photodiode (APD)-based deep space optical uplink communication under combined channel impairments, including atmospheric and coronal turbulence induced beam scintillation, pointing errors, angle-of-arrival (AOA) fluctuations, link attenuation, and background noise. A closed-form analytical channel model unifying these effects is derived and validated through Monte Carlo simulations. Webb and Gaussian approximations are employed to characterize APD output statistics, with theoretical symbol error rate (SER) expressions for pulse position modulation (PPM) derived under diverse impairment scenarios. Numerical results demonstrate that the Webb model achieves higher accuracy by capturing APD gain dynamics, while the Gaussian approximation remains viable when APD gain exceeds a channel fading-dependent gain threshold. Key system parameters such as APD gain and field-of-view (FOV) angle are analyzed. The optimal APD gain significantly influences the achievement of optimal SER performance, and angle of FOV design balances AOA fluctuations tolerance against noise suppression. These findings enable hardware optimization under size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) constraints without compromising performance. Our work provides critical guidelines for designing robust APD-based deep space optical uplink communication systems. Full article

Traditional received signal strength indicator (RSSI)-based and angle of arrival (AoA)-based positioning methods are highly susceptible to multipath effects, signal attenuation, and noise interference in complex indoor environments, which significantly degrade positioning accuracy. To mitigate the impact of the above deterioration, we propose a deep learning-based Bluetooth indoor positioning system, which employs a Kalman filter (KF) to reduce the angular error in AoA measurements and utilizes a median filter (MF) and moving average filter (MAF) to mitigate fluctuations in RSSI-based distance measurements. In the deep learning network architecture, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN)–multi-head attention (MHA) model. During the training process, the backpropagation (BP) algorithm is used to compute the gradient of the loss function and update the parameters of the entire network, gradually optimizing the model’s performance. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed indoor positioning method achieves an average error of 0.29 m, which represents a significant improvement compared to traditional RSSI and AoA methods. Additionally, it displays superior positioning accuracy when contrasted with numerous emerging indoor positioning methodologies. Full article

Indoor positioning systems (IPSs) are increasingly vital for various applications on the Internet of Things (IoT), including home automation, navigation in large buildings, AR, and smart city development. These systems rely on techniques such as time of arrival (ToA), angle of arrival (AoA), and received signal strength indicator (RSSI), and Bluetooth low energy (BLE). Despite advancements, challenges such as signal fluctuations, multipath effects, and high infrastructure costs limit the accuracy and adoption of these systems. This paper proposes a deep neural network-based approach to enhance angle estimation by leveraging phase drift values, an underutilized aspect in current models. By employing the phase drift-dependent lightweight angle estimation (PLAE) model, we aim to improve angle prediction accuracy, particularly in complex indoor environments. Experimental results demonstrate that our model achieves higher accuracy compared to traditional methods. The integration of time series data handling capabilities in our approach highlights its potential to provide more reliable indoor positioning solutions. This research contributes to the development of specialized models for precise AoA estimation, addressing the gaps in existing methodologies. Full article

Localization accuracy in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios is often hindered by the complex nature of multipath propagation. Traditional approaches typically focus on NLOS node identification and error mitigation techniques. However, the intricacies of NLOS localization are intrinsically tied to propagation challenges. In this paper, we propose a novel single-site localization method tailored for complex multipath NLOS environments, leveraging only angle-of-arrival (AOA) estimates in conjunction with a ray-tracing (RT) algorithm. The method transforms NLOS paths into equivalent line-of-sight (LOS) paths through the generation of generalized sources (GSs) via ray tracing. A novel weighting mechanism for GSs is introduced, which, when combined with an iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS) estimator, significantly improves the localization accuracy of non-cooperative target sources. Furthermore, a multipath similarity displacement matrix (MSDM) is incorporated to enhance accuracy in regions with pronounced multipath fluctuations. Simulation results validate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm, achieving localization performance that approaches the Cramér–Rao lower bound (CRLB), even in challenging NLOS scenarios. Indoor positioning is the key enabling technology for many location-aware applications. As GPS does not work indoors, various solutions are proposed for navigating devices. Among these solutions, Bluetooth low energy (BLE) technology has gained significant attention due to its affordability, low power consumption, and rapid data transmission capabilities, making it highly suitable for indoor positioning. Received signal strength (RSS)-based positioning has been studied intensively for a long time. However, the accuracy of RSS-based positioning can fluctuate due to signal attenuation and environmental factors like crowd density. Angle of arrival (AoA)-based positioning uses angle measurement technology for location devices and can achieve higher precision, but the accuracy may also be affected by radio reflections, diffractions, etc. In this study, a dual-branch convolutional neural network (CNN)-based BLE indoor positioning algorithm integrating RSS and AoA is proposed, which exploits both RSS and AoA to estimate the position of a target. Given the absence of publicly available datasets, we generated our own dataset for this study. Data were collected from each receiver in three different directions, resulting in a total of 2675 records, which included both RSS and AoA measurements. Of these, 1295 records were designated for training purposes. Subsequently, we evaluated our algorithm using the remaining 1380 unseen test records. Our RSS and AoA fusion algorithm yielded a sub-meter accuracy of 0.79 m, which was significantly better than the 1.06 m and 1.67 m obtained when using only the RSS or the AoA method. Compared with the RSS-only and AoA-only solutions, the accuracy was improved by 25.47% and 52.69%, respectively. These results are even close to the latest commercial proprietary system, which represents the state-of-the-art indoor positioning technology. Full article

As the era of sixth-generation (6G) communications approaches, there will be an unprecedented increase in the number of wireless internet-connected devices and a sharp rise in mobile data traffic. Faced with the scarcity of spectrum resources in traditional communication networks and challenges such as rapidly establishing communications after disasters, this study leverages unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to promote an integrated multi-hop communication system combining free-space optical (FSO) communication, terahertz (THz) technology, and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). This innovative amalgamation capitalizes on the flexibility of UAVs, the deployability of IRS, and the complementary strengths of FSO and THz communications. We have developed a comprehensive channel model that includes the effects of atmospheric turbulence, attenuation, pointing errors, and angle-of-arrival (AOA) fluctuations. Furthermore, we have derived probability density functions (PDFs) and cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) for various switching techniques. Employing advanced methods such as Gaussian–Laguerre quadrature and the central limit theorem (CLT), we have calculated key performance indicators including the average outage probability, bit error rate (BER), and channel capacity. The numerical results demonstrate that IRS significantly enhances the performance of the UAV-based hybrid FSO/THz system. The research indicates that optimizing the number of IRS elements can substantially increase throughput and reliability while minimizing switching costs. Additionally, the multi-hop approach specifically addresses the line-of-sight (LoS) dependency limitations inherent in FSO and THz systems by utilizing UAVs as dynamic relay points. This strategy effectively bridges longer distances, overcoming physical and atmospheric obstacles, and ensures stable communication links even under adverse conditions. This study underscores that the enhanced multi-hop FSO/THz link is highly effective for emergency communications after disasters, addressing the challenge of scarce spectrum resources. By strategically deploying UAVs as relay points in a multi-hop configuration, the system achieves greater flexibility and resilience, making it highly suitable for critical communication scenarios where traditional networks might fail. Satellite laser communication can achieve high-speed, high-precision, and high-security broadband communication without being constrained by the electromagnetic spectrum, which has attracted attention. So, this paper proposes the use of a high-altitude platform (HAP) under anisotropic non-Kolmogorov turbulence to improve the communication performance of the system. Cross quadrature amplitude modulation (XQAM) and hexagon quadrature amplitude modulation (HQAM) are applied to the ground–HAP–satellite (G-H-S) laser communication system. Considering the combined effects of uplink light intensity scintillation, beam wander, and the angle of arrival fluctuation, the G-H-S system’s bit error rate (BER) closure expression is derived under the EW distribution. Simultaneously, the relationship between the G-H-S system’s signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and BER under different anisotropic factor u values is simulated and compared with the traditional ground–satellite (G-S) system. The results show that the communication performance of the G-H-S system with HQAM modulation is better. In addition, the effects of the zenith angle, receiving aperture, transmitter beam radius, and beam divergence angle on the BER performance of the system are also studied. Finally, the correctness of the analysis results is verified via Monte Carlo simulation. This research will benefit the design and optimization of satellite laser communication systems. Full article

In dual-wavelength free-space optical communication systems, the wavefront distortion differences caused by the wavelength difference of the signal and beacon lights cannot be completely corrected. In this study, according to the method of geometric optics, the relationship between the wavefront phases of the signal and beacon lights is analyzed by establishing a mathematical model of the cross-correlation ratio of the arrival-angle fluctuation and phase relationship of different Gaussian-beam wavelengths under weak turbulence near the surface. The numerical results show that after Gaussian beams of different wavelengths propagate through the same atmospheric channel, the cross-correlation number of the arrival-angle fluctuation decreases with an increase in the wavelength difference, waist radius, and turbulence intensity, and increases with an increase in propagation distance. The beam-wavefront phase difference increases with an increasing wavelength difference. Finally, a wavefront distortion correction experiment of a dual-wavelength adaptive optical system verified the correctness of the wavefront phase-difference relationship between the signal light and beacon light established in this study. Future wireless communications have been envisaged to benefit from integrating drones and free space optical (FSO) communications, which would provide links with line-of-sight propagation and large communication capacity. The theoretical performance analysis for a drone-assisted downlink FSO system is investigated. Furthermore, this paper utilizes the Málaga distribution to characterize the effect of atmospheric turbulence on the optical signal for the drone–terrestrial user link, taking into account atmospheric attenuation, pointing errors, and angle-of-arrival fluctuations. The probability density function and cumulative distribution function are then expressed in closed-form using the heterodyne detection and indirect modulation/direct detection techniques, respectively. Thereafter, the analytical expressions including the average bit error rate (BER) and the ergodic capacity are given. Particularly, the asymptotic behavior of the average BER of the considered system is presented using heterodyne detection at high optical power. The Monte Carlo simulation results certify the theoretical analytical results. Correspondingly, the field-of-view of the receiver is analyzed for optimal communication performance. Full article
