Smart Electromagnetic Skins (SESs) provide a cost-effective and efficient alternative to increasing the number of Base Stations (BSs) for improving the performance of next-generation communication networks and contribute to the implementation of Smart Radio Environments (SREs). SESs generalize the concept of ReflectArrays (RAs) because they redirect the incident field in a non-specular direction. However, as the difference between the pointing and specular directions increases, specular and parasitic effects arise, which affect the radiation pattern, energy efficiency, and pointing direction. The techniques generally adopted for SES design, using homogenized-effective-medium model, are unable to overcome this drawback efficiently. Starting with initial SES design based on the Phase-Gradient (PG) approach, the suppression of the higher order modes has been achieved by incorporating volumetric charge-current distributions when defining radiation modes, using theory of electromagnetic-multipoles. This approach reveals formation of anapoles in single-layer SESs/RAs for first time ever. By combining both local and non-local approaches in super-cell design, higher-order symmetry-breaking of unit cells is utilized to exploit anapole formation as a parasitic mode suppression method. Numerical analysis of SESs with increasing size confirms the effectiveness of the proposed approach, which allows for a drastic reduction in parasitic modes while leaving the performance of the desired mode unchanged. Adopting a multipole perspective enhances the understanding of SES radiation mechanisms, unlocks their unexploited performance potential, and opens new opportunities for multifunctional design. We theoretically demonstrate that nonmagnetic silicon nanodisk dimers, under plane-wave illumination, can achieve electric dipole mode-free by suppressing electric dipole responses at magnetic resonance frequencies through structural parameter tuning. This is enabled by the anapole mode, where destructive interference between Cartesian electric and toroidal dipole moments results in low spherical electric dipole scattering. Furthermore, the magnetic resonance responses in this nanostructure are tunable within the visible spectrum and compatible with current nanofabrication technology. Full article

Magnetic anapole states associated with the destructive interference between magnetic dipole and magnetic toroidal moments result in suppressed scattering accompanied by strongly enhanced near fields. Here, we demonstrate the existence of such modes in the gap of a gold oblate nano-ellipsoid on gold mirror (ONEOM) structures and observe a pronounced Purcell factor enhancement for magnetic dipole radiation upon introducing magnetic dipoles into the gap. We systematically investigate the dependence of the magnetic radiation Purcell factor on gap size and structural parameters. Notably, a 230-fold Purcell factor enhancement is achieved for the ONEOM configuration. This result highlights the potential of ONEOM structures in applications requiring efficient magnetic dipole emission, including nonlinear frequency conversion, plasmonic sensing, and single-photon sources. Metasurfaces have drawn extensive research attention for their unique optical properties and vast application potential. Among the various resonant modes induced in metasurfaces, BIC and electric anapole modes stand out as particularly interesting due to their distinctive physical characteristics. In this work, we designed and investigated novel dimeric dumbbell-shaped metasurfaces incorporating two independently tunable asymmetric parameters. This structural innovation enables the simultaneous excitation of both electric anapole and QBIC modes under normally incident MIR illumination. More importantly, by adjusting these two asymmetric parameters, one can independently tune the resonance peaks of the two modes, thereby overcoming the performance limits of conventional single-peak modulation. This metasurface design demonstrates outstanding performance for dielectric environment-sensing applications. We conducted a comprehensive investigation of the sensing sensitivity for dumbbell-shaped metasurfaces of various geometries. Our simulation results show that the circular-shaped configuration achieved high sensitivity, reaching 20,930 GHz/RIU. This work offers a novel design paradigm for multi-mode control and functionalization of metasurface structures. Full article

Thermal relics with masses in the GeV to TeV range remain possible candidates for the Universe’s dark matter (DM). These neutral particles are often assumed to have vanishing electric and magnetic dipole moments so that they do not interact with single real photons, but the anapole moment, a static electromagnetic property whose features are akin to that of a classical toroidal solenoid, can still be non-zero, permitting interactions with single virtual photons. In some models, DM predominantly annihilates into charged standard model particles through a p-wave process mediated by the anapole moment. The anapole moment is also responsible for another interaction of interest. If a DM medium were subjected to an electric current, a DM particle whose anapole moment was aligned with the current would have lower energy than the state with an antialigned anapole moment. Given these interactions, if a collection of initially unpolarized DM particles were subjected to an electric current, then the DM medium would become partially polarized, according to the Boltzmann distribution. In such a polarized medium, DM annihilation into photons, a subdominant s-wave process realizable through higher order interactions, would be somewhat suppressed. If the local electric current existed during a time in which the DM begins to drop out of thermal equilibrium with the rest of the Universe, the suppressed annihilation could lead to a small local excess in the relic DM density relative to a current-free region. This mechanism by which the local DM density can be perturbed is novel. Using effective interactions to model a DM particle’s anapole moment and polarizabilities (responsible for s-wave annihilation into two photons), we compute the changes in the DM density produced by long- and short-lived currents around freeze out. If we employ the most stringent constraints on DM annihilation into two photons, we find that long-lived currents can result in a fractional change in the DM density on the order of 1017 for DM masses around 100 GeV; for short-lived currents, this fractional change in local DM density is on the order of 1023 for the same DM mass. In the field of modern optical computing and communication, optical bistability plays a crucial role. With a weak third-order nonlinear coefficient, low switch thresholds of optical bistability from Si-based nanophotonic structures remain a challenge. In this work, a metasurface consisting of silicon nanostrip arrays placed on the optically thick silver film is proposed. The light–matter interaction is enhanced by mirror-inducing the magnetic anapole states (MASs) and asymmetrically optimizing its silicon nanostrip. Numerical results show that the average enhancement factor (EF) of an electric field can be greatly enhanced to be 1524.8. Moreover, the optical bistability of the proposed metasurface achieves the thresholds of ION-OFF and IOFF-ON of 8.5 MW/cm2 and 7.1 MW/cm2, respectively, which is the lowest threshold when compared to the previous works based on silicon nanostructures. The angular dependance of the bistability performance is also investigated. This work facilitates the proposed hybrid metasurface in the fields of miniaturized all-optical switches and modulators, which are key components in optical computing and communication. Full article

All-dielectric metasurfaces are a blooming field with a wide range of new applications spanning from enhanced imaging to structural color, holography, planar sensors, and directionality scattering. These devices are nanopatterned structures of sub-wavelength dimensions whose optical behavior (absorption, reflection, and transmission) is determined by the dielectric composition, dimensions, and environment. However, the functionality of these metasurfaces is fixed at the fabrication step by the geometry and optical properties of the dielectric materials, limiting their potential as active reconfigurable devices. Herein, a reconfigurable all-dielectric metasurface based on two high refractive index (HRI) materials like silicon (Si) and the phase-change chalcogenide antimony triselenide (Sb2Se3) for the control of scattered light is proposed. It consists of a 2D array of Si–Sb2Se3–Si sandwich disks embedded in a SiO2 matrix. The tunability of the device is provided through the amorphous-to-crystalline transition of Sb2Se3. We demonstrate that in the Sb2Se3 amorphous state, all the light can be transmitted, as it is verified using the zero-backward condition, while in the crystalline phase most of the light is reflected due to a resonance whose origin is the contribution of the electric (ED) and magnetic (MD) dipoles and the anapole (AP) of the nanodisks. By this configuration, a contrast in transmission (ΔT) of 0.81 at a wavelength of 980 nm by governing the phase of Sb2Se3 can be achieved. Full article

Exciting Fano resonance can improve the quality factor (Q-factor) and enhance the light energy utilization rate of optical devices. However, due to the large inherent loss of metals and the limitation of phase matching, traditional optical devices based on surface plasmon resonance cannot obtain a larger Q-factor. In this study, a silicon square-hole nano disk (SHND) array device is proposed and studied numerically. The results show that, by breaking the symmetry of the SHND structure and transforming an ideal bound state in the continuum (BIC) with an infinite Q-factor into a quasi-BIC with a finite Q-factor, three Fano resonances can be realized. The calculation results also show that the three Fano resonances with narrow linewidth can produce significant local electric and magnetic field enhancements: the highest Q-factor value reaches 35,837, and the modulation depth of those Fano resonances can reach almost 100%. Considering these properties, the SHND structure realizes multi-Fano resonances with a high Q-factor, narrow line width, large modulation depth and high near-field enhancement, which could provide a new method for applications such as multi-wavelength communications, lasing, and nonlinear optical devices. It is shown that the electric dipole- and electric quadrupole–anapole polarizabilities, denoted respectively by fαβ and gα,βγ, and the anapole magnetizability aαβ, are intrinsic properties of the electron cloud of molecules responding to optical fields. fαβ is a nonvanishing property of chiral and achiral compounds, whereas aαβ is suitable for enantiomer discrimination of chiral species. They can conveniently be evaluated by numerical integration, employing a formulation complementary to that provided by perturbation theory and relying on the preliminary computation of electronic current density tensors all over the molecular domain. The origin dependence of the dynamic anapolar response is rationalized via related computational techniques employing numerical integration, as well as definitions of molecular property tensors, for example, electric dipole and electric quadrupole polarizabilties and magnetizability. A preliminary application of the theory is reported for the Ra enantiomer of the hydrogen peroxide molecule, evaluating tensor components of electric dipole-anapole polarizability and anapole magnetizability as functions of the dihedral angle ϕ H-O-O-H in the range 0ϕ180. High refractive index dielectric nanostructures represent a new frontier in nanophotonics, and the unique semiconductor characteristics of dielectric systems make it possible to enhance electric fields by exploiting this fundamental physical phenomenon. In this work, the scattered radiation spectral features and field-enhanced interactions of gallium phosphide disks with forked slits at anapole modes are investigated systematically by numerical and multipole decomposition analyses. Additional enhancement of the electric field is achieved by opening the forked slits to create high-intensity hot spots inside the disk, and nearby molecules can access these hot spots directly. The results reveal a novel approach for near-field engineering such as electric field localization, nonlinear optics, and optical detection. Full article

This work proposes the use of the refractive index sensitivity of non-radiating anapole modes of high-refractive-index nanoparticles arranged in planar metasurfaces as a novel sensing principle. The spectral position of anapole modes excited in hollow silicon nanocuboids is first investigated as a function of the nanocuboid geometry. Then, nanostructured metasurfaces of periodic arrays of nanocuboids on a glass substrate are designed. The metasurface parameters are properly selected such that a resonance with ultrahigh Q-factor, above one million, is excited at the target infrared wavelength of 1.55 µm. The anapole-induced resonant wavelength depends on the refractive index of the analyte superstratum, exhibiting a sensitivity of up to 180 nm/RIU. Such values, combined with the ultrahigh Q-factor, allow for refractometric sensing with very low detection limits in a broad range of refractive indices. Besides the sensing applications, the proposed device can also open new venues in other research fields, such as non-linear optics, optical switches, and optical communications. Full article

All-dielectric metamaterials are a promising platform for the development of integrated photonics applications. In this work, we investigate the mutual coupling and interaction of an ensemble of anapole states in silicon nanoparticles. Anapoles are intriguing non-radiating states originated by the superposition of internal multipole components which cancel each other in the far-field. While the properties of anapole states in single nanoparticles have been extensively studied, the mutual interaction and coupling of several anapole states have not been characterized. By combining first-principles simulations and analytical results, we demonstrate the transferring of anapole states across an ensemble of nanoparticles, opening to the development of advanced integrated devices and robust waveguides relying on non-radiating modes.
