This study conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of biodegradable (BD) mulching film in onion cultivation, with a focus on plant growth, yield, soil environment, weed suppression, and film degradation, in comparison to conventional polyethylene (PE) film and non-mulching (NM) treatment across multiple regions and years (2023–2024). The BD and PE films demonstrated similar impacts on onion growth, bulb size, yield, and weed suppression, significantly outperforming NM, with yield increases of over 13%. There were no consistent differences in soil pH, electrical conductivity, and physical properties in crops that used either BD or PE film. Soil temperature and moisture were also comparable regardless of which film type was used, confirming BD’s viability as an alternative to PE. However, areas that used BD film had soils which exhibited reduced microbial populations, particularly Bacillus and actinomycetes which was likely caused by degradation by-products. BD film degradation was evident from 150 days post-transplantation, with near-complete decomposition at 60 days post-burial, whereas PE remained largely intact (≈98%) during the same period. These results confirm that BD film can match the agronomic performance of PE while offering the advantage of environmentally friendly degradation. Further research should optimize BD film durability and assess its cost-effectiveness for large-scale sustainable agriculture. Full article

Climate change presents urgent and complex challenges to agricultural sustainability and food security, particularly in regions reliant on resource-intensive staple crops. Smart agriculture—through the integration of crop modeling, satellite remote sensing, and artificial intelligence (AI)—offers data-driven strategies to enhance productivity, optimize input use, and mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study introduces Farmdee-Mesook, a mobile-first smart agriculture platform designed specifically for Thai rice farmers. The platform leverages AquaCrop simulation, open-access satellite data, and localized agronomic models to deliver real-time, field-specific recommendations. Usability-focused design and no-cost access facilitate its widespread adoption, particularly among smallholders. Empirical results show that platform users achieved yield increases of up to 37%, reduced agrochemical costs by 59%, and improved water productivity by 44% under alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation schemes. These outcomes underscore the platform’s role as a scalable, cost-effective solution for operationalizing climate-smart agriculture. Farmdee-Mesook demonstrates that digital technologies, when contextually tailored and institutionally supported, can serve as critical enablers of climate adaptation and sustainable agricultural transformation. Late sowing and spring low temperatures have a great impact on the growth and maturation of wheat in the rice–wheat rotation region. In order to analyze the impacts of cold stress in February in early spring on yield formation and agronomic traits of wheat on different sowing dates, a controlled pot experiment was performed using the widely promoted and applied spring-type wheat variety Yangmai23 (YM23). The yield of wheat treated with late sowing date II (SDII, 21 November) and overly late sowing date III (SDIII, 9 December) were both lower than that of wheat sown on the suitable date I (SDI, 1 November). The yield of late-sown wheat decreased by 40.82% for SDII and by 66.77% for SDIII, compared with SDI, and these three treatments of wheat all grew under the natural conditions as the control treatments. The plant height, stem diameter of the internode below the ear, flag leaf length and area, and total awn length of the spike, as well as the spike length of late-sown wheat, were all significantly lower than those of wheat in SDI treatment. Early spring low temperatures exacerbated the decline in yield of wheat sown on different dates, to some extent. Despite showing higher net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate in flag leaves of the SDIII treatment under low-temperature stress than those of the other treatments at anthesis, overly late sowing led to minimal leaf area, shorter plant height, fewer tillers, and smaller ears, ultimately resulting in the lowest yield. Our study suggested that additional focus and some regulation techniques are needed to be studied further to mitigate the combined negative impacts of late sowing and low-temperature stress in early spring on wheat production. Cassava is the sixth most important food crop and is cultivated in more than 100 countries. The crop tolerates low soil fertility and drought, enabling it to play a role in climate adaptation strategies. Cassava generally requires careful preparation to remove toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) before its consumption, but HCN concentrations can vary considerably between varieties. Climate change and low inputs, particularly carbon and nutrients, affect agriculture in Pacific Island countries where cassava is commonly grown alongside traditional crops (e.g., taro). Despite increasing popularity in this region, there is limited experimental data about cassava crop management for different local varieties, their relative toxicity and nutritional value for human consumption, and their interaction with changing climate conditions. To help address this knowledge gap, three field experiments were conducted at the Koronivia Research Station of the Fiji Ministry of Agriculture. Two varieties of cassava with contrasting HCN content were planted at three different times coinciding with the start of the wet (September-October) or dry (April) seasons. A time series of measurements was conducted during the full 18-month or differing 6-month durations of each crop, based on destructive harvests and phenological observations. The former included determination of total biomass, HCN potential, carbon isotopes (δ13C), and elemental composition. Yield and nutritional value were significantly affected by variety and time of planting, and there were interactions between the two factors. Findings from this work will improve cassava management locally and will provide a valuable dataset for agronomic and biophysical model testing. Full article

The agronomic effectiveness of biofertilizers is influenced by strain origin, genetic identity, crop genotype, soil type, and environmental conditions. For best results, both the plant and rhizobia strain must be adapted to the common harsh soil conditions in the tropics. While plant varieties have changed over the years, complementary research on new strains effectiveness under varying soil fertility conditions has lagged in southern Africa. Seven field experiments were established in the main soybean-producing areas of Zimbabwe in the north, central, and north–east regions to evaluate agronomic benefits of new rhizobia strains against the current exotic commercial strain (MAR1491). One site was irrigated (site 3), and the other six sites were rainfed (sites 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7). While trends in inoculation response varied from site to site due to site conditions, inoculation with the strains NAZ15, NAZ25, and NAK128 consistently yielded high grain yields, which were similar to the current commercial strain MAR1491 and to application of mineral fertilizer (51.75 and 100 kg N ha−1). Grain yield levels were generally below 2 t ha−1 for sites 2, 3, and 5 and above 2 t ha−1 for sites 1, 4, and 6, while for the irrigated site 3, they ranged upwards of 3 t ha−1. When irrigated, all strains except NAK9 performed similarly in terms of grain yields and aboveground N uptake. Further testing on the inclusion of the indigenous strains NAZ15, NAZ25, and NAK128 in multi-strain commercial inoculant production targeting application in regions and soils where they excel beyond the current exotic strain MAR1491 is recommended. The quality of rice, one of the most important food crops in the world, is directly related to people’s dietary experience and nutritional health. With the improvement in living standards, consumer requirements for the taste quality of rice are becoming increasingly strict. Japonica rice occupies an important position in rice production due to its rich genetic diversity and excellent agronomic characteristics. In this study, LJ433, JY653, LJ218, LJ177, LY66, and LX21, which are mainly popularized in northern China and have different taste values, were selected as the experimental subjects, and YJ219, which won the gold award in the third China high-quality rice variety taste quality evaluation, was taken as the control (CK). Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance and spectral analysis were adopted as the main detection techniques. The effects of free water (peak area increased by 13.24–86.68% when p < 0.05), bound water, appearance characteristics (such as chalkiness, which decreased by 18.48–86.48%), and chemical composition (amylose content decreased by 3.76–26.47%) on the taste value of rice were systematically analyzed, and a multi-dimensional “appearance–palatability–nutrition” evaluation system was constructed. The experimental results indicated that increasing the free water content, reducing the chalkiness and chemical component content could significantly improve the taste value of rice (p < 0.05). The results of this research provide a theoretical basis for breeding new high-yield and high-quality rice varieties and have guiding significance for the practice of rice planting and processing. Fruit size is an important agronomic trait affecting the yield and commercial value of melon and a key trait selected for during domestication. In this study, two respective melon accessions (large-fruited M202008 and small-fruited M202009) were crossed, and developed biparental mapping populations of the F2 generation (160 and 382 plants) were checked across two subsequent experimental years (2023 and 2024). The phenotypic characterization and genetic inheritance analysis showed that melon fruit size is modulated by quantitative genetics. Bulked segregant sequencing analysis (BSA-seq) identified a stable and effective quantitative trait locus (QTL, named Cmfs) controlling fruit size, localized to a 3.75 Mb region on chromosome 9. To better delineate the main-effect Cmfs locus, co-dominant polymorphic molecular markers were developed in this genetic interval, and genotyping was performed within the F2 mapping populations grown across two years. QTL analysis of the phenotypic and genotypic datasets delimited the major-effect Cmfs locus interval for fruit length [2023: logarithm of odds (LOD) value = 6.16, 16.20% phenotypic variation explained (PVE); 2024: LOD = 5.44, 6.35% PVE] and fruit diameter (2023: LOD value = 5.48, 14.59% PVE; 2024: LOD = 6.22, 7.22% PVE) to 1.88 and 2.20 Mb intervals, respectively. The annotation analysis across the melon genome and comparison of resequencing data from the two parental lines led to the preliminary identification of MELO3C021600.1 (annotated as cytochrome P450 724B1) as a candidate gene related to melon fruit size. These results provide a better understanding for further fine mapping and functional gene analysis related to melon fruit size. Full article

This study evaluated the effects of different plant growth regulators and their concentration gradients on the agronomic traits, seed yield, and yield components of Medicago sativa L. cv. “Xinmu No. 5” alfalfa. This experiment comprised 10 treatments, including 98% mepiquat chloride (200, 250, and 300 mg/L), 5% prohexadione-calcium (150, 250, and 350 mg/L), and 5% uniconazole (50, 100, and 150 mg/L), each at three concentration levels, along with a distilled water control (CK). The results show that the 98% mepiquat chloride treatment (MCT3) significantly reduced plant height (by 22%) and internode length (by 28.3%), while increasing stem diameter, branch number, and seed yield. Plant height and internode length exhibited a significant positive correlation, and both were highly significantly negatively correlated (p < 0.01) with seed yield components, indicating that controlling vegetative growth can enhance seed yield. Principal component analysis (extracting four principal components with a cumulative contribution rate of 80.8%) further confirmed that the 98% mepiquat chloride treatment MCT3 (300 mg/L) was the most effective treatment for improving seed yield of alfalfa in arid regions. The diversification of plant protein sources is a strategic priority for European food systems, particularly under the EU Green Deal and Farm to Fork strategies. In this study, dual production of full-fat soy (FFS) and expanded soybean cake (ESC) was evaluated using non-GMO soybeans cultivated under semi-organic conditions in Central Poland. Two agronomic systems—post-emergence mechanical weeding with rotary harrow weed control (P1) and conventional herbicide-based control (P2)—were compared over a four-year period. The P1 system produced consistently higher yields (e.g., 35.6 dt/ha in 2024 vs. 33.4 dt/ha in P2) and larger seed size (TSW: up to 223 g). Barothermal and press-assisted processing yielded FFS with protein content of 32.4–34.5% and oil content of 20.8–22.4%, while ESC exhibited enhanced characteristics: higher protein (37.4–39.0%), lower oil (11.6–13.3%), and elevated dietary fiber (15.8–16.3%). ESC also showed reduced anti-nutritional factors (e.g., trypsin inhibitors and phytic acid) and remained microbiologically and oxidatively stable over six months. The semi-organic P1 system offers a scalable, low-input approach to local soy production, while the dual-product model supports circular, zero-waste protein systems aligned with EU sustainability targets. Melissa officinalis L. (Lamiaceae) is a perennial plant species widely used in the pharmaceutical and food industries, particularly valued for its sedative properties. This study investigates the impact of synthetic mulch film and planting density as two experimental factors on agronomic performance, raw material quality, and economic efficiency in lemon balm production. The experiment was conducted at three locations in Serbia (L1: Bačko Novo Selo, L2: Bavanište, L3: Vilandrica) from 2022 to 2024, using two planting densities on synthetic mulch film (F1: 8.3 plants m−2; F2: 11.4 plants m−2) and a control treatment without mulch (C). The synthetic mulch film used was a synthetic black polypropylene film (Agritela Black, 90 g/m2), uniformly applied in strips across the cultivation area, covering approximately 78% of the soil surface. The results showed consistent increases in morphological parameters and yield across the years. Plant height in F1 and F2 treatments ranged from 65 to 75 cm, while in the control it reached up to 50 cm (2022–2024). Fresh biomass yield varied from 13.4 g per plant (C) to 378.08 g per plant (F2), and dry biomass yield from 60.3 g (C) to 125.4 g (F2). The highest essential oil content was observed in F2 (1.2% in 2022), while the control remained at 0.8%. The F2 treatment achieved complete weed suppression throughout the experiment without the use of herbicides, demonstrating both agronomic and ecological advantages. Economic evaluation revealed that F2 generated the highest cumulative profit (€142,164.5) compared to the control (€65,555.3). Despite higher initial investment, F2 had the most favorable cost–benefit ratio in the long term. This study highlights the crucial influence of mulching and planting density on optimizing lemon balm production across diverse climatic and soil conditions, while also underscoring the importance of sustainable, non-chemical weed management strategies in lemon balm cultivation. Synergistic Role of Selenium and Boron in Enhancing Salinity Tolerance and Secondary Metabolite Accumulation in Oregano

The present work was performed in greenhouse conditions, and 10 ppm Se, 10 ppm B, and 100 mM salinity treatments were used. The results showed significant variations in the agronomic traits of oregano among the treatments and harvests. The 10 ppm Se×10 ppm B treatment showed improvements over other properties for morphological and yield properties with protein, essential oil, and Zn contents, and B×salinity outperformed other treatments, with variations in branch number enhancement. The analysis revealed that salinity treatment could effectively enhance Na and Ca contents. B treatment significantly improved Mn (12,443.51–18,739.77 ppm), Mg (406.85–632.79 ppm), Fe (61.43–885.06 ppm), Cu (5.02–9.32 ppm), and B (37.67–114.28 ppm) element contents. The highest K content was found from Se treatment. The effects of the Se, B, and salinity treatments showed effectively after second and third harvests of the oregano for the many examined properties. Fresh and dry weight values showed variability between 1.60–6.00 g/plant and 0.54–2.42 g/plant, respectively. Principal coordinate analysis indicated that most of the properties took place in the groups 1 (1st harvests of plant height and protein content, 2nd harvests of protein content and fresh and dry weight, 3rd harvest of fresh weight and total fresh and dry weight values) and 2 (branch number and essential oil contents, Na, and Zn). The heat-map analysis divided into two main clusters as A and B. A2, A4, and A5 treatments took place in the B group. Treatment of 10 ppm Se×10 ppm B showed better values compared to other treatments. Thus, this treatment may be beneficial for oregano cultivation under non-saline conditions. Full article

Under controlled field conditions, twelve self-made formulations were set up and compared with a conventional market formulation to comprehensively analyze their impacts on the agronomic traits, yield, soil physicochemical properties, and economic benefits of M. sextelata fruiting bodies. The research findings indicate that the nutrient bag formulations have a significant effect on soil available nutrients. Specifically, the contents of alkali-hydrolysable nitrogen (AN) and available potassium (AK) exhibit a significantly negative correlation with M. sextelata yield (r = −0.60, p < 0.05; r = −0.72, p < 0.01, respectively). Among all the treatment groups, the KY1 formulation (comprising 30% wheat grains, 5% rice bran, 60% corncobs, 2% rice husks, 1% lime, and 1% gypsum) achieved the highest yield of 915.13 kg per 667 m2, which was 16.1% higher than that of the control group. The net economic benefit per unit area (667 m2) reached CNY 75,282.15, representing a 20.7% increase compared to the traditional wheat grains-based formulation. In conclusion, partially substituting wheat grains with rice bran in ENBs can not only reduce reliance on staple food resources but also enhance yield and economic efficiency. Due to the differences in cultivated strains and environmental conditions, the impact on morel yield is substantial; therefore, the results of this study need further validation through pilot trials. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological, biochemical, and productive effects of the foliar application of bioregulators, based on auxin, cytokinin, and gibberellic acid, on yellow melon, cultivar DALI®, plants subjected to different salinity levels in a protected environment to simulate Brazil’s semi-arid conditions. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized block design, in a 4 × 3 factorial scheme, with four salinity levels (0, 2, 4, and 6 dS m−1) and three doses of the bioregulator, Stimulate® (0%, 100%, and 150% of the recommended dose), with six weekly applications. The physiological variables (chlorophyll a fluorescence and gas exchange) and biochemical parameters (antioxidant enzyme activity and lipid peroxidation) were evaluated at 28 and 42 days after transplanting, and the agronomic traits (fresh fruit mass, physical attributes, and post-harvest quality) were evaluated at the end of the experiment. The results indicated that salinity impaired the physiological and productive performance of the plants, especially at higher levels (4 and 6 dS m−1), causing oxidative stress, reduced photosynthesis, and decreased yield. However, the application of the bioregulator at the 100% dose mitigated the effects of salt stress under moderate salinity (2 dS m−1), promoting higher CO2 assimilation rates of up to 31.5%, better water-use efficiency, and reduced lipid peroxidation. In addition, the fruits showed a greater mass of up to 66%, thicker pulp, and higher soluble solids (> 10 °Brix) content, making them suitable for sale in the market. The 150% dose did not provide additional benefits and, in some cases, resulted in inhibitory effects. It is concluded that the application of Stimulate® at the recommended dose is effective in mitigating the effects of moderate salinity, up to ~3 dS m−1, in yellow melon crops; however, its effectiveness is limited under high salinity conditions, requiring the use of complementary strategies. Optimizing Agri-PV System: Systematic Methodology to Assess Key Design Parameters

Agrivoltaic (Agri-PV) systems face the critical challenge of balancing photovoltaic energy generation with crop productivity, yet systematic approaches to quantifying the trade-offs between these objectives remain scarce. In this study, we identify nine essential design indicators: panel tilt angle, elevation, photovoltaic coverage ratio, shading factor, land equivalent ratio, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) utilization, crop yield stability index, water use efficiency, and return on investment. We introduce a novel dual matrix Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to evaluate their relative significance. An international panel of eighteen Agri-PV experts, encompassing academia, industry, and policy, provided pairwise comparisons of these indicators under two objectives: maximizing annual energy yield and sustaining crop output. The high consistency observed in expert responses allowed for the derivation of normalized weight vectors, which form the basis of two Weighted Influence Matrices. Analysis of Total Weighted Influence scores from these matrices reveal distinct priority sets: panel tilt, coverage ratio, and elevation are most influential for energy optimization, while PAR utilization, yield stability, and elevation are prioritized for crop productivity. This methodology translates qualitative expert knowledge into quantitative, actionable guidance, clearly delineating both synergies, such as the mutual benefit of increased elevation for energy and crop outcomes, and trade-offs, exemplified by the negative impact of high photovoltaic coverage on crop yield despite gains in energy output. By offering a transparent, expert-driven decision-support tool, this framework enables practitioners to customize Agri-PV system configurations according to local climatic, agronomic, and economic contexts. Ultimately, this approach advances the optimization of the food energy nexus and supports integrated sustainability outcomes in Agri-PV deployment. Full article

Effects of Replacing Nitrogen Fertilizer with Organic Fertilizer on Soil Physicochemical Properties and Maize Yield in Yunnan’s Red Soil

Red soil regions commonly experience land degradation and low nutrient availability. Excessive fertilizer use in recent years has intensified these challenges, necessitating scientifically informed fertilization strategies to ensure agricultural sustainability. To identify optimal fertilization strategies for maize cultivation in Yunnan’s red soil regions, this study conducted field experiments involving partial substitution of nitrogen fertilizer with organic manure to determine whether this approach improves soil health and boosts maize yield. Four treatments were compared in a randomized complete block design over one growing season: no fertilization (NF), soil testing and formula fertilization (STF), 15% organic fertilizer (swine manure) replacing nitrogen fertilizer (OF15), and 30% organic fertilizer replacing nitrogen fertilizer (OF30). The results indicated that substituting organic fertilizer for nitrogen fertilizer reduced soil acidification while increasing total phosphorus (TP) and available phosphorus (AP), thereby enhancing soil physicochemical properties. Maize grown under OF30 exhibited improved agronomic traits including plant height, stem diameter, ear height, and ear length. Additionally, the partial replacement of synthetic fertilizer with organic fertilizer notably increased maize yield and the weight of 100 grains, but there was no significant difference (p < 0.05) between OF15 and OF30. Moreover, the OF30 treatment generated the highest economic return of 25,981.73 CNY·ha−1. Correlation and principal component analyses revealed that substituting organic fertilizer for nitrogen fertilizer notably influenced total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), available phosphorus (AP), and yield, with maize yield positively correlated with TP and AP content. This study presents evidence that replacing 30% of nitrogen fertilizer with organic fertilizer is a viable strategy to enhance soil health, maize productivity, and profitability in Yunnan’s red soil regions, providing a crucial scientific foundation to support sustainable agricultural development in the region.
