This research aims to analyze the evolution of productivity and efficiency in tractors featuring varying propulsion system designs through the development of a parametric modeling approach. Recognizing that large row-crop tractors represent a significant capital investment—ranging from USD 0.4 to over 0.8 million for current-generation models—and that machinery costs constitute a substantial share of farm production expenses, this study addresses the urgent need for data-driven decision-making in agricultural enterprises. Utilizing consolidated OECD Code 2 tractor test data for all large row-crop John Deere tractors from the MFWD era to the latest generation, the study evaluates tractor performance across multiple productivity and efficiency indicators. The analysis culminates in the creation of a robust, user-friendly parametric model (R2 = 0.9337, RMSE = 1.0265), designed to assist stakeholders in making informed decisions regarding tractor replacement or upgrading. By enabling the optimization of productivity and efficiency while accounting for agronomic and timeliness constraints, this model supports sustainable and profitable management practices in modern agriculture. High concentrations of vicine and convicine (v-c) in faba beans can trigger favism in susceptible humans, posing a significant barrier to the broader adoption of faba beans as a food source. While plant breeding and various post-harvest processing methods have been adopted to reduce v-c levels, there is limited understanding of how agronomic practices may assist in reducing v-c levels. This study investigated the effect of sowing time (TOS), soil type, and genotype on v-c levels in faba beans. Twelve faba bean genotypes were evaluated across multiple field sites by applying two sowing times and two diverse soil types. The v-c content was quantified using established chromatographic techniques. Genotypes were identified as the most major factor affecting v-c levels, with significant variation observed in mean vicine and convicine contents. Sowing time also had a significant impact (p < 0.01), with lower v-c levels observed in TOS 1 compared to TOS 2. This reduction may be due to a longer plant development period and extended seed desiccation in TOS 1. Soil conditions, likely linked to nutritional factors, significantly influenced vicine concentrations (p < 0.05) but did not influence convicine levels (p > 0.05). These findings highlight the importance of agronomy practices, such as optimal sowing time, soil nutrition, and moisture management, in minimizing v-c levels; the most effective strategy remains the development of low v-c genotypes combined with farming practices that naturally suppress v-c accumulation. Biogas slurry (BGS), a nutrient-rich by-product of anaerobic digestion, presents a promising opportunity for sustainable agriculture on sandy soils. This review explores the agronomic potential of using BGS for improving sorghum’s (Sorghum bicolor) productivity by enhancing soil fertility and the nutrient availability. It focuses on the sources and properties of BGS, its application methods, and their effects on the soil nutrient dynamics and crop productivity. The findings indicate that BGS improves the soil health and crop yields, offering an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fertilizers, especially in resource-limited settings. Despite these benefits, research gaps persist, including the need for long-term field trials, the optimization of application strategies for sandy soils, and comprehensive economic evaluations. Additionally, concerns such as nutrient imbalances, phosphorus accumulation, and slurry composition variability must be addressed. This review recommends standardizing BGS nutrient profiling and adopting site-specific management practices to maximize its agronomic benefits and environmental safety. Integrating BGS into sustainable soil fertility programs could contribute significantly to achieving agricultural resilience and circular economy goals. Full article

A dearth of knowledge exists on identifying the begomoviruses and distributing cassava mosaic viruses across key cassava-growing regions of Sierra Leone. The study aimed to identify and map the distribution of cassava mosaic disease (CMD)-associated viruses in farmers’ fields in Sierra Leone. Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) leaf samples were collected in 109 smallholder farms during a geo-referenced survey conducted from 10th May to 5th June 2024. Molecular diagnostics were carried out to identify the viral strains associated with CMD. Findings revealed that infection by stem cutting was more predominant in the south, east, north, and northwest regions than in the west region. In contrast, infection by whitefly was predominant in the west, north, and northwest regions. PCR screening of 426 samples coupled with sequence analysis revealed the presence of African cassava mosaic-like (ACMV-like) viruses, and East African cassava mosaic-like (EACMV-like) viruses as single infections at 78.1% and 1.3%, respectively. Co-infections of ACMV-like and EACMV-like viruses were detected in 20.6% of the tested samples. In addition, 70.6% of the samples positive for EACMV-like virus (single and mixed infections) were found to be positive for East African cassava mosaic Cameroon virus (EACMCMV). The ACMV and co-infection of ACMV and EACMV viruses were present in all regions, while EACMCV was detected in all regions except the western area. The results indicate more prevalence of the EACMCMV variant in Sierra Leone. This study suggests utilization of participatory surveillance and good agronomic practices to manage CMD in Sierra Leone. Permanent grasslands play a crucial role in ruminant nutrition, providing cost-effective and nutritionally rich forage. Their effective management is essential for improving agricultural productivity and sustainability. This review examines factors affecting forage quality, including environmental conditions, botanical composition, conservation methods, and fertilization strategies. The impact of grassland management practices, such as cutting frequency, grazing systems, and soil fertility enhancement, on forage nutritional value is discussed. Advances in breeding, including genomic selection and molecular techniques, offer opportunities to improve digestibility and resistance to environmental stress. Furthermore, conservation methods, including haymaking and silage production, significantly influence forage quality. Special attention is given to the role of legumes and multi-species swards in enhancing protein content and mineral composition. The review highlights that optimizing forage quality requires an integrated approach, combining agronomic practices, genetic improvements, and sustainable management strategies. Future research should focus on developing resilient forage systems that maintain high nutritional value while adapting to changing climatic conditions. Full article

Chemical nitrogen (N) fertilizer application has substantially boosted crop yield over the past few decades. However, an excessive N supply often comes at the expense of soil health and the long-term sustainability of agricultural ecosystems. To avoid these concerns, both biochar and organic fertilizers offer the potential to improve soil fertility while reducing reliance on chemical N fertilizer. However, the impact of these amendments on N use efficiency (NUE) and potential environmental risk in cherry tomatoes remains unclear. To fill the void, a two-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of biochar and organic fertilizer in combination with chemical N fertilizer on cherry tomato fruit yield, N uptake, NUE, and potential environmental risk. The results showed that compared with the CK (without biochar and organic fertilizer), biochar application had no significant effect on cherry tomato yield and NUE. In contrast, compared to CK, organic fertilizer increased the fruit yield, partial factor productivity of applied N, N agronomic efficiency, and N recovery efficiency by 21.4%, 18.4%, 18.5%, and 25.1%, respectively, averaged across both cropping seasons. In addition, increasing N fertilizer application alongside organic fertilizer further enhanced cherry tomato yield, but it compromised NUE and increased potential environmental risks related to global warming and terrestrial acidification. A comprehensive evaluation using Z-score analysis, integrating yield performance, NUE, and environmental risk, identified the combined application of organic fertilizer and 160 kg N ha−1 as the most promising fertilizer management practice for the sustainable production of cherry tomatoes. These findings provide a valuable reference for optimizing fertilizer management in cherry tomato production, especially in tropical regions where achieving a balance between sustainability and productivity is crucial. The rapid and accurate prediction of crop yield and the construction of optimal yield prediction models are important for guiding field-scale agronomic management practices in precision agriculture. This study selected the leaf area index (LAI) of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) at four different stages, and collected canopy spectral information and extracted vegetation indexes through unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multi-spectral sensors to establish the yield prediction model under the condition of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer and proposed optimal fertilization strategies for sustainable yield increase in wheat. The prediction results were evaluated using random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM) and back propagation neural network (BPNN) methods to select the optimal spectral index and establish yield prediction models. The results showed that LAI has a significantly positive correlation with yield across four growth stages of winter wheat, and the correlation coefficient at the anthesis stage reached 0.96 in 2018–2019 and 0.83 in 2019–2020. Therefore, yield prediction for winter wheat could be achieved through a remote sensing estimation of LAI at the anthesis stage. Six vegetation indexes calculated from UAV-derived reflectance data were modeled against LAI, demonstrating that the red-edge vegetation index (CIred edge) achieved superior accuracy in estimating LAI for winter wheat yield prediction. RF, SVM and BPNN models were used to evaluate the accuracy and precision of CIred edge in predicting yield, respectively. It was found that RF outperformed both SVM and BPNN in predicting yield accuracy. The CIred edge of the anthesis stage was the best vegetation index and stage for estimating yield of winter wheat based on UAV remote sensing. Under different N application rates, both predicted and measured yields exhibited a consistent trend that followed the order of SRF (slow-release N fertilizer) > SRFU1 (mixed TU and SRF at a ratio of 2:8) > SRFU2 (mixed TU and SRF at a ratio of 3:7) > TU (traditional urea). The optimum N fertilizer rate and N fertilizer type for winter wheat in this study were 220 kg ha−1 and SRF, respectively. The results of this study will provide significant technical support for regional crop growth monitoring and yield prediction. Full article

This study aims to identify the optimal conditions—host, plant material, seasonality, and agricultural practices—for isolating and developing a collection of culturable endophytic microorganisms to support sustainable Olea europaea L. cultivation. Samples were collected from three Sicilian olive cultivars (‘Nocellara del Belice’, ‘Nocellara Etnea’, and ‘Nocellara Messinese’) and six wild olive accessions across different phenological phases and under organic and conventional agronomic management. Endophytes were isolated from leaves and twigs using a culture-dependent approach, and their taxonomic diversity and plant-growth-promoting (PGP) traits were analyzed. A total of 133 endophytic isolates were identified, spanning bacterial (Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria) and fungal (Ascomycota and Basidiomycota) phyla. Wild olive trees contributed more than cultivated varieties to enriching the diversity and composition of culturable endophyte collection as well as twigs instead of leaves. Winter sampling allowed to implement the taxonomic genera of olive endophyte collection. Both farming systems favored an increase in the composition of microbial collection, though organic farming systems supported greater microbial richness. Functional analysis highlighted key PGP traits in a selection of bacterial isolates, including indole-3-acetic acid and siderophore production, nitrogen fixation, and antifungal activity. Bacillus spp. dominated enzymatic activities, such as amylase, protease, and lipase production, as well as antifungal activity against the olive fungal pathogen Neofusicoccum vitifusiforme. This research highlights the significant diversity and functional potential of Mediterranean olive endophytes. Our findings emphasize the role of native microbial communities as bio-inoculants, promoting plant growth, nutrient uptake, and disease resistance. These insights lay the groundwork for developing targeted olive-microbial consortia for biocontrol and stress tolerance applications. Full article

Salt accumulation in arable lands causes significant abiotic stress, resulting in a 10% loss in global arable land area and jeopardizing food production and agricultural sustainability. In order to attain high and sustainable food production, it is imperative to enhance traditional agricultural practices with modern technology to enable the restoration of arable lands afflicted by salinity. This review consolidates recent rice-specific advancements aimed at enhancing salt stress resilience through integrated strategies. We explore the functions of primary and secondary metabolic pathways, organic amendments, microbial symbiosis, and plant growth regulators in reducing the negative impacts of salt. Furthermore, we highlight the significance of emerging genetic and epigenetic technologies, including gene editing and transcriptional regulation, in developing salt-tolerant rice cultivars. Physiological studies reveal salt stress responses in rice plants, biochemical analyses identify stress-related metabolites, microbial investigations uncover beneficial plant–microbe interactions, and molecular approaches enable the identification of key genes—together providing essential insights for developing salt-tolerant rice varieties. We present a comprehensive overview of the multilayered strategies—ranging from agronomic management and physiological adaptations to molecular breeding and microbial applications—that have been developed and refined over recent decades. These approaches have significantly contributed to understanding and improving salinity tolerance mechanisms in rice. This review provides a foundational framework for future research and practical implementation in stress-resilient rice farming systems. Full article

Water scarcity in semiarid regions represents a critical challenge for sustainable agriculture, reducing the availability of forage and affecting livestock systems. The reuse of treated wastewater offers an environmentally friendly alternative to meet water and nutrient needs, supporting the principles of the circular economy. Sweet sorghum, with its remarkable tolerance to abiotic stress, represents a resilient crop option. Evaluating its agronomic and industrial responses to different depths of irrigation using reclaimed water is essential for improving resource-efficient agricultural practices in water-limited environments. This study evaluated the effects of different irrigation regimes with treated wastewater on the growth, productivity, and water use efficiency of sweet sorghum grown in a semiarid region of Brazil. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design, with five irrigation regimes ranging from 50% to 150% of crop evapotranspiration (ETc) and four replications. Irrigation was carried out with treated wastewater using a drip irrigation system. Growth parameters, fresh biomass, water use efficiency, and soluble solids content (°Brix) were analyzed in two consecutive harvests (main and ratoon crop). Deficit irrigation regimes (50% and 75% of ETc) resulted in higher water use efficiency and higher °Brix, whereas regimes above 100% of ETc reduced water use efficiency and biomass productivity. The ratoon crop showed greater sensitivity to water management, with significant productivity responses under irrigation around 100% of ETc. The first harvest was more productive in terms of fresh biomass and plant growth. Reclaimed water is a sustainable and efficient strategy for cultivating sweet sorghum in semiarid regions. Deficit irrigation regimes can be technically viable for maximizing water use efficiency and production quality, while proper irrigation management is crucial to avoiding losses associated with excessive water application. Cassava Mosaic Disease (CMD) is a major constraint to cassava production in Côte d’Ivoire, causing significant yield and income losses for smallholder farmers. Despite its high prevalence, farmers’ knowledge and understanding of the disease remain limited. To address this issue, the Central and West African Virus Epidemiology (WAVE) Regional Center of Excellence provided capacity building for farmers in the major cassava growing regions. This study assesses the impact of the WAVE’s trainings and awareness campaigns on farmers’ knowledge of the disease and the management methods they adopted. Mixed socio-agronomic data were collected from 290 farmers, and CMD epidemiological parameters were assessed in 82 farms. Data were analysed using propensity score matching (PSM), followed by a Tobit regression model to assess the determinants and intensity of adoption of CMD management practices, using Stata. The results showed that trained farmers had a better understanding of CMD compared to untrained farmers. On average, trained farmers adopted 2.36 disease management practices (DMPs) compared to 1.55 DMPs for untrained farmers. Participation in WAVE’s training sessions and a sound knowledge of CMD positively influenced both the adoption and intensity of adoption of DMPs. However, there was no significant difference in CMD incidence between beneficiary areas (54.55%) and non-beneficiary areas (54.95%), likely due to the unavailability of disease-free planting material, inadequate agricultural practices, and high populations of whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci). This study shows the importance of awareness campaigns in the sustainable management of crop diseases in general and CMD in particular and suggests the need to train farmers on disease management and provide them with healthy planting materials. Large-scale inter-basin water transfer is an important means to alleviate the pressure on water resources in water shortage regions. However, the long-term impacts of inter-basin transfers on the regional water–salt balance and associated land productivity remain poorly understood, especially in salt-affected arid environments. To fill this gap, the core objective of this study was to reveal the implications of inter-basin water transfer on soil salinity and sodicity and the crop yield response under different irrigation practices. We conducted a case study on the Karamay irrigation district (KID), an artificial oasis with a 30-year history of inter-basin water transfer in northwestern China, using trend and correlation analyses, water–salt balance analyses, and salt-controlled yield reduction functions as well as field comprehensive measurements over 1996–2023. The results indicate that soil salinity and sodicity profiles, overall, exhibited a clear vertical stratification under both the early and late crop growing stages, and the degree of the soil salinization was decreasing, and the area of non-saline land was increasing significantly from 1996 to 2023 in the KID. Owing to the lack of salt-washing water and the poor irrigation water quality, the water-saving irrigated farmland was in the slight salt-aggregating state in the topsoil layer, while the other soil layers were in the salt-expelling or salt-equilibrating state in the KID. The profile distribution and exchange fluxes of soil salinity and sodicity are mainly characterized by climate, irrigation, and groundwater dynamics, as well as the plant salt tolerance, soil properties, and agronomic management which also influence the soil salt accumulation. With the transformation of irrigation schemes from traditional flood irrigation to modern water-saving irrigation during 1996–2023, the impact of soil salinity on relative crop yields has been substantially reduced in the KID, especially for salt-sensitive crops. This revealed that optimizing the drainage facilities, precise field irrigation and fertilization measures, and rational crop selection and agronomic practices are vital for high-quality development in the KID. Capitalizing on these research findings, we would provide effective directives for maintaining the sustainability of agricultural development in other similar inter-basin water transfer zones in the world. Rye (Secale cereale L.), a cereal with valuable agronomic and nutritional benefits, contributes to sustainable agriculture, especially in areas where more demanding crops cannot be cultivated due to the poor agronomic value of soil. This review explores rye grain quality optimization strategies through production techniques. The quality and yield of grain are under the significant impact of agronomic factors, such as variety selection, crop rotation, soil tillage, fertilization, sowing practices, chemical protection, and harvest timing. It is also under the strong influence of the chosen farm’s management strategy, like organic or conventional farming system. This review emphasizes its diverse potential utilization routes, and the importance of bioactive compounds, dietary fibers, phenolic acids, phytoestrogens, and benzoxazinoids that enhance its value as a functional food. Cereal grain with quality issues cannot be used as food for humans, however, it can still be utilized alternatively as a renewable biofuel. This review showed rye grain to have a potential to contribute to sustainable agriculture and at the same time build farms’ resilience through possible alternative utilization strategies. It can serve as both a food source and a sustainable biofuel, offering a dual-purpose solution within the circular bioeconomy. Full article

Soil health has become increasingly important in recent years. The Hokkaido government initiated its original administrative strategy referred to as “Clean Agriculture” in 1991, before the concept of soil health and soil quality evolved in the 1990s. Also, Clean Agriculture has been integrated with remote sensing techniques for spatial application in arable fields. In this review paper, we summarized the scientific progress in Clean Agriculture and the management of soil health using remote sensing. One of the main pillars of Clean Agriculture is the minimal usage of chemical fertilizers and agrochemicals to increase soil fertility through the proper application of organic matter. The other two pillars are the sustainment and enhancement of the natural recycling function in agriculture and the enhancement of a stable production safe and high-quality agricultural products taking into account environmental harmony. These agronomic practices can increase soil fertility, maintain water quality, mitigate climate change, and maintain human health, and are similar to those in North America and the EU. Moreover, soil nitrogen fertility evaluated by autoclaved nitrogen (AC-N) can be estimated in large-scale fields and areas via remote sensing, which can facilitate variable nitrogen fertilization using variable-rate planters or broadcasters. Furthermore, systems comprising the growth sensor and variable-rate broadcaster can determine the additional nitrogen fertilization rates for winter wheat on the fields, which enhances soil health over relatively large areas. Further research is needed to expand the spatial utility of various Clean Agriculture techniques using multiperiod satellite images. Full article

Integrated soil fertility management is essential for improving soil productivity, rice yield, and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). This study investigated the combined effects of the chemical fertilizer rate, humic acid (HA), and flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FG) on the soil chemical properties, rice yield, NUE, and nitrogen agronomic efficiency (NAE) in acidic paddy soil. The following three factors were evaluated: (1) fertilization based on farmer practices and rice nutrient requirements; (2) HA at 0 and 975 kg ha−1; and (3) FG at 0, 23, and 636 kg ha−1. Fertilization based on rice requirements reduced the nitrogen (N) input by 14.5% compared to farmer practices while still maintaining similar grain yields. Under farmer practice, HA enhanced total N content, cation exchange capacity (CEC), rice yield, NUE, and NAE. HA with FG (636 kg ha−1) increased total organic carbon (TOC) levels, total N levels, and exchangeable ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N), but decreased the yield. In contrast, HA combined with FG at 23 kg ha−1 enhanced the soil exchangeable Ca and S levels, as well as resulting in a high rice yield (7.7 t ha−1), NUE (39%), and NAE (32 kg kg−1). The findings suggest that to maintain farmer fertilization practices while improving soil properties and rice yield, HA should be applied with FG (23 kg ha−1). Full article
