This work presents the experimental and numerical investigation of a novel acoustic metamaterial based on sustainable and biodegradable components: cork membranes and honeycomb cores made from treated aramid paper. The design exploits the principle of localized resonance induced by tensioned membranes coupled with subwavelength cavities, aiming to achieve high sound absorption at low (250–500 Hz) and mid frequencies (500–1400 Hz) with minimal thickness and environmental impact. Three configurations were analyzed, varying the number of membranes (one, two, and three) while keeping a constant core structure composed of three stacked honeycomb layers. Acoustic performance was measured using an impedance tube (Kundt’s tube), focusing on the normal-incidence sound absorption coefficient in the frequency range of 250–1400 Hz. The results demonstrate that increasing the number of membranes introduces multiple resonances and broadens the effective absorption bandwidth. Numerical simulations were performed to predict pressure field distributions. The numerical model showed good agreement with the experimental data, validating the underlying physical model of coupled mass–spring resonators. The proposed metamaterial offers a low-cost, modular, and fully recyclable solution for indoor sound control, combining acoustic performance and environmental sustainability. These findings offer promising perspectives for the application of bio-based metamaterials in architecture and eco-design. Further developments will address durability, high-frequency absorption, and integration in hybrid soundproofing systems. Full article

In recent years, various devices utilizing surface acoustic waves (SAW) have emerged as powerful tools for manipulating particles and fluids in microchannels. Although they demonstrate a wide range of functionalities across diverse applications, existing devices still face limitations in flexibility, manipulation efficiency, and spatial resolution. In this study, we developed a dual-sided standing surface acoustic wave (SSAW) device that simultaneously excites acoustic waves through two piezoelectric substrates positioned at the top and bottom of a microchannel. By fully exploiting the degrees of freedom offered by two pairs of interdigital transducers (IDTs) on each substrate, the system enables highly flexible control of microparticles. To explore its capability on particle aggregation, we developed a two-dimensional numerical model to investigate the influence of the SAW phase modulation on the established acoustic fields within the microchannel. Single-particle motion was first examined under the influence of the phase-modulated acoustic fields to form a reference for identifying effective phase modulation strategies. Key parameters, such as the phase changes and the duration of each phase modulation step, were determined to maximize the lateral motion while minimizing undesired vertical motion of the particle. Our dual-sided SSAW configuration, combined with novel dynamic phase modulation strategy, leads to rapid and precise aggregation of microparticles towards a single focal point. This study sheds new light on the design of acoustofluidic devices for efficient spatiotemporal particle concentration. Full article

Taconis oscillations represent spontaneous excitation of acoustic modes in tubes with large temperature gradients in cryogenic systems. In this study, Taconis oscillations in hydrogen and helium systems are enhanced with a porous material resulting in a standing-wave thermoacoustic engine. A theoretical model is developed using the thermoacoustic software DeltaEC, version v6.4b2.7, to predict system performance, and an experimental apparatus is constructed for engine characterization. The low-amplitude thermoacoustic model predicts the pressure amplitude, frequency, and temperature gradient required for excitation of the standing-wave system. Experimental measurements, including the onset temperature ratio, acoustic pressure amplitudes, and frequencies, are recorded for different stack materials and geometries. The findings indicate that, independent of stack, hydrogen systems excite at smaller temperature differentials than helium (because of different properties such as lower viscosity for hydrogen), and the stack geometry and material affect the onset temperature ratio. However, pressure amplitude in the excited states varies minimally. Initial measurements are also conducted in a cooling setup with an added regenerator. The configuration with stainless-steel mesh screens produces a small cryogenic refrigeration effect with a decrease in temperature of about 1 K. The reported characterization of a Taconis-based thermoacoustic engine can be useful for the development of novel thermal management systems for cryogenic storage vessels, including refrigeration and pressurization. This study aims to investigate the effects of phase synchronisation on tonal noise reduction in a multi-rotor UAV using an electronic phase-locking system. Experiments at the University of Bristol explored the impact of relative phase angle, propeller spacing, and blade geometry on acoustic performance, including psychoacoustic annoyance. Results show that increasing the phase angle consistently reduces the sound pressure level (SPL) due to destructive interference. For the two-bladed configuration, the highest noise reduction occurred at relative phase angle Δψ=90, with a 19 dB decrease at the first blade-passing frequency (BPF). Propeller spacing had minimal impact when phase synchronisation was applied. The pitch-to-diameter (P/D) ratio also influenced results: for P/D=0.55, reductions ranged from 13–18 dB; and for P/D=1.0, reductions ranged from 10–20 dB. Maximum psychoacoustic annoyance was observed when propellers were in phase (Δψ=0), while annoyance decreased with increasing phase angle, confirming the effectiveness of phase control for noise mitigation. For the five-bladed configuration, the highest reduction of 15 dB occurred at Δψ=36, with annoyance levels also decreasing with phase offset. Full article

The escalating environmental noise pollution along urban rail transit corridors, exacerbated by rapid urbanization, necessitates innovative and efficient noise control measures. A comprehensive investigation was conducted that utilized field measurements of train passing-by noise to establish a statistical energy analysis model for evaluating the acoustic performance of both vertical (VB) and fully enclosed (FB) barrier configurations. The study incorporated Maa’s theory of micro-perforated plate (MPP) parameter optimization and developed a neural network surrogate model focused on insertion loss maximization for barrier geometric design. Key findings revealed significant barrier-induced near-track noise amplification, with peak effects observed at the point located 1 m from the barrier and 2 m above the rail. Frequency-dependent analysis demonstrated a characteristic rise-and-fall reflection pattern, showing maximum amplifications of 1.47 dB for VB and 4.13 dB for FB within the 400–2000 Hz range. The implementation of optimized MPPs was found to effectively eliminate the near-field noise amplification effects, achieving sound pressure level reductions of 4–8 dB at acoustically sensitive locations. Furthermore, the high-precision surrogate model (R2 = 0.9094, MSE = 0.8711) facilitated optimal geometric design solutions. The synergistic combination of MPP absorption characteristics and geometric optimization resulted in substantially enhanced barrier performance, offering practical solutions for urban rail noise mitigation strategies. This study presents the development and validation of an AI-based system for detecting chainsaw sounds, integrated into a fixed-wing VTOL UAV. The system employs a convolutional neural network trained on log-mel spectrograms derived from four sound classes: chainsaw, music, electric drill, and human voices. Initial validation was performed through ground testing. Acoustic data acquisition is optimized during cruise flight, when wing-mounted motors are shut down and the rear motor operates at 40–60% capacity, significantly reducing noise interference. To address residual motor noise, a preprocessing module was developed using reference recordings obtained in an anechoic chamber. Two configurations were tested to capture the motor’s acoustic profile by changing the UAV’s orientation relative to the fixed microphone. The embedded system processes incoming audio in real time, enabling low-latency classification without data transmission. Field experiments confirmed the model’s high precision and robustness under varying flight and environmental conditions. Results validate the feasibility of real-time, onboard acoustic event detection using spectrogram-based deep learning on UAV platforms, and support its applicability for scalable aerial monitoring tasks. This paper presents a cloud-based architecture for the acquisition, transmission, and processing of acoustic data from hydrophone arrays, designed to enable the detection and monitoring of both surface and underwater vehicles. The proposed system offers a modular and scalable cloud infrastructure that supports real-time and distributed processing of hydrophone data collected in diverse aquatic environments. Acoustic signals captured by heterogeneous hydrophones—featuring varying sensitivity and bandwidth—are streamed to the cloud, where several machine learning algorithms can be deployed to extract distinguishing acoustic signatures from vessel engines and propellers in interaction with water. The architecture leverages cloud-based services for data ingestion, processing, and storage, facilitating robust vehicle detection and localization through propagation modeling and multi-array geometric configurations. Experimental validation demonstrates the system’s effectiveness in handling high-volume acoustic data streams while maintaining low-latency processing. The proposed approach highlights the potential of cloud technologies to deliver scalable, resilient, and adaptive acoustic sensing platforms for applications in maritime traffic monitoring, harbor security, and environmental surveillance. Accurate localization plays a critical role in enabling underwater vehicle autonomy. In this work, we develop a robust infrastructure-based localization framework that estimates the position and orientation of underwater vehicles using only range measurements from long baseline (LBL) acoustic beacons to multiple on-board receivers. The proposed framework integrates three key components, each formulated as a convex optimization problem. First, we introduce a robust calibration function that unifies multiple sources of measurement error—such as range-dependent degradation, variable sound speed, and latency—by modeling them through a monotonic function. This function bounds the true distance and defines a convex feasible set for each receiver location. Next, we estimate the receiver positions as the center of this feasible region, using two notions of centrality: the Chebyshev center and the maximum volume inscribed ellipsoid (MVE), both formulated as convex programs. Finally, we recover the vehicle’s full 6-DOF pose by enforcing rigid-body constraints on the estimated receiver positions. To do this, we leverage the known geometric configuration of the receivers in the vehicle and solve the Orthogonal Procrustes Problem to compute the rotation matrix that best aligns the estimated and known configurations, thereby correcting the position estimates and determining the vehicle orientation. We evaluate the proposed method through both numerical simulations and field experiments. To further enhance robustness under real-world conditions, we model beacon-location uncertainty—due to mooring slack and water currents—as bounded spherical regions around nominal beacon positions. We then mitigate the uncertainty by integrating the modified range constraints into the MVE position estimation formulation, ensuring reliable localization even under infrastructure drift. The acoustic performance of windows significantly influences evaluations of building quality, particularly in urban environments. This study presents the results of laboratory tests on the airborne sound insulation of windows with dimensions greater than those specified in ISO 10140-5:2021-10. The aim was to determine the impact of construction details and installation techniques on sound insulation, specifically Rw and Rw + Ctr values. The experimental variables included mounting methods (expansion tape versus low-pressure polyurethane foam), the presence or absence of a threshold in the lower frame, and the type of mullion (fixed versus movable). The tests involved two types of IGUs characterized by different acoustic properties. The findings indicate that the frame configuration, including threshold and mullion type, has a negligible influence on sound insulation. However, the standard method for estimating acoustic performance (EN 14351-1:2006 + A2:2017), which relies on IGU-based data, proved unreliable for modern window assemblies. The estimated values of Rw and Rw + Ctr were consistently lower than those obtained from direct laboratory measurements. These results highlight the need for verification through full-size window testing and suggest that reliance on simplified estimation procedures may lead to underperformance in real-world acoustic applications. Effect of Quasi-Static Door Operation on Shear Layer Bifurcations in Supersonic Cavities

Span-wise homogeneous supersonic cavity flows display complicated structures due to shear layer breakdown, flow acoustic resonance, and even non-linear hydrodynamic-acoustic interactions. In practical applications, such as aircraft bays, the cavity is of finite width and has doors, both of which introduce distinctive phenomena that couple with the shear layer at the cavity lip, further modulating shear layer bifurcations and tonal mechanisms. In particular, asymmetric states manifest as ‘tornado’ vortices with significant practical consequences on the design and operation. Both inward- and outward-facing leading-wedge doors, resulting in leading edge shocks directed into and away from the cavity, are examined at select opening angles ranging from 22.5° to 90° (fully open) at Mach 1.6. The computational approach utilizes the Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes equations with a one-equation model and is augmented by experimental observations of cavity floor pressure and surface oil-flow patterns. For the no-doors configuration, the asymmetric results are consistent with a long-time series DDES simulation, previously validated with two experimental databases. When fully open, outer wedge doors (OWD) yield an asymmetric flow, while inner wedge doors (IWD) display only mildly asymmetric behavior. At lower door angles (partially closed cavity), both types of doors display a successive bifurcation of the shear layer, ultimately resulting in a symmetric flow. IWD tend to promote symmetry for all angles observed, with the shear layer experiencing a pitchfork bifurcation at the ‘critical angle’ (67.5°). This is also true for the OWD at the ‘critical angle’ (45°), though an entirely different symmetric flow field is established. The first observation of pitchfork bifurcations (‘critical angle’) for the IWD is at 67.5° and for the OWD, 45°, complementing experimental observations. The back wall signature of the bifurcated shear layer (impingement preference) was found to be indicative of the 3D cavity dynamics and may be used to establish a correspondence between 3D cavity dynamics and the shear layer. Below the critical angle, the symmetric flow field is comprised of counter-rotating vortex pairs at the front and back wall corners. The existence of a critical angle and the process of door opening versus closing indicate the possibility of hysteresis, a preliminary discussion of which is presented. Full article

To enhance the survivability of armed helicopters in high-threat environments, integrated infrared (IR) suppressors are increasingly adopted to reduce thermal signatures. However, such integration significantly alters the exhaust flow field, which may in turn affect both the infrared and acoustic characteristics of the helicopter. This study investigates the aerodynamic, infrared, and acoustic impacts of an integrated IR suppressor through the comparative analysis of two helicopter configurations: a conventional design and a design equipped with an integrated IR suppressor. Full-scale models are used to analyze flow field and IR radiation characteristics, while scaled models are employed for aeroacoustic simulations. The results show that although the integrated IR suppressor increases flow resistance and reduces entrainment performance within the exhaust mixing duct, it significantly improves the thermal dissipation efficiency of the exhaust plume. The infrared radiation analysis reveals that the integrated suppressor effectively reduces radiation intensity in both the 3~5 μm and 8~14 μm bands, especially under cruise conditions where the exhaust is more efficiently cooled by ambient airflow. Equivalent radiation temperatures calculated along principal axes confirm lower IR signatures for the integrated configuration. Preliminary acoustic analyses suggest that the slit-type nozzle and integrated suppressor layout may also offer potential benefits in jet noise reduction. Overall, the integrated IR suppressor provides a clear advantage in lowering the infrared observability of armed helicopters, with acceptable aerodynamic and acoustic trade-offs. These findings offer valuable guidance for the future development of low-observable helicopter platforms. Full article

This research introduces an innovative passive vibration control methodology employing acoustic black hole (ABH) structures to mitigate vibration transmission in electric automotive steering machines—a prevalent issue adversely affecting driving comfort and vehicle safety. Leveraging the inherent bending wave manipulation properties of ABH configurations, we conceive an integrated vibration suppression framework synergizing advanced computational modeling with intelligent optimization algorithms. A high-fidelity finite element (FEM) model integrating ABH-attached steering machine system was developed and subjected to experimental validation via rigorous modal testing. To address computational challenges in design optimization, a hybrid modeling strategy integrating parametric design (using Latin Hypercube Sampling, LHS) with Kriging surrogate modeling is proposed. Systematic parameterization of ABH geometry and damping layer dimensions generated 40 training datasets and 12 validation datasets. Surrogate model verification confirms the model’s precise mapping of vibration characteristics across the design space. Subsequent multi-objective genetic algorithm optimization targeting RMS velocity suppression achieved substantial vibration attenuation (29.2%) compared to baseline parameters. The developed methodology provides automotive researchers and engineers with an efficient suitable design tool for vibration-sensitive automotive component design. Full article

Speaker profiling systems are often evaluated on a single corpus, which complicates reliable comparison. We present a fully reproducible evaluation pipeline that trains Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) models independently on three speech corpora representing distinct recording conditions—studio-quality TIMIT, crowdsourced Mozilla Common Voice, and in-the-wild VoxCeleb1. All models share the same architecture, optimizer, and data preprocessing; no corpus-specific hyperparameter tuning is applied. We perform a detailed preprocessing and feature extraction procedure, evaluating multiple configurations and validating their applicability and effectiveness in improving the obtained results. A feature analysis shows that Mel spectrograms benefit CNNs, whereas Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) suit LSTMs, and that the optimal Mel-bin count grows with corpus Signal Noise Rate (SNR). With this fixed recipe, EfficientNet achieves 99.82% gender accuracy on Common Voice (+1.25 pp over the previous best) and 98.86% on VoxCeleb1 (+0.57 pp). MobileNet attains 99.86% age-group accuracy on Common Voice (+2.86 pp) and a 5.35-year MAE for age estimation on TIMIT using a lightweight configuration. The consistent, near-state-of-the-art results across three acoustically diverse datasets substantiate the robustness and versatility of the proposed pipeline. Optimizing hydrodynamic performance and dissolved oxygen (DO) distribution is essential for improving water quality management in industrial recirculating aquaculture systems. This study combines experimental measurements and data analysis to evaluate the effects of the inlet pipe flow rate (Q), deployment distance ratio (d/r), deployment angle (θ), inlet pipe structure on hydrodynamics and the dissolved oxygen distribution across various tank layers. The flow field distribution in the tanks was measured using Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV), and the hydrodynamic characteristics, including average velocity (vavg) and the velocity uniformity coefficient (DU50), were quantitatively analyzed. The dissolved oxygen content at different tank layers was recorded using an Aquameter GPS portable multi-parameter water quality analyzer. The findings indicate that average velocity (vavg) and the velocity uniformity coefficient (DU50) are key determinants of the hydrodynamic characteristic of circular aquaculture tanks. Optimal hydrodynamic performance occurs for the vertical single-pipe porous configuration at Q = 9 L/s, d/r = 1/4, and θ = 45°,the average velocity reached 0.0669 m/s, and the uniformity coefficients attained a maximum value of 40.4282. In a vertical single-pipe porous structure, the tank exhibits higher dissolved oxygen levels compared to a horizontal single-pipe single-hole structure. Under identical water inflow rates and deployment distance ratios, dissolved oxygen levels in the surface layer of the circular aquaculture tank are significantly greater than that in the bottom layer. The results of this study provide valuable insights for optimizing the engineering design of industrial circular aquaculture tanks and addressing the dissolved oxygen distribution across different water layers. In the framework of the MATIM project, an acoustic test campaign was conducted on a platform derived from a commercial-class quadcopter within the CIRA semi-anechoic chamber. A dedicated rotor rig allowed systematic measurements of thrust, torque, and shaft speed together with near- and far-field noise using ten calibrated 1/2-inch precision microphones. Three configurations were examined: an isolated rotor, the same rotor mounted on an aluminium quadcopter plate, and the full four-rotor assembly. The resulting data set, acquired over 3000–8000 rpm, documents the azimuthal directivity and radial decay of tonal and broadband noise while separating motor, propeller, and installation contributions. Analysis shows that a nearby rigid plate scatters part of the sound field towards frontal and oblique observers and produces a shielding effect in the rotor plane. The combined operation of four rotors further redistributes energy and broadens blade-passing frequency harmonics. The database is intended as a benchmark for aeroacoustics codes and for the development of reduced-order models. Full article
