In this study, a non-typical luminescent organosilicone was synthesized through a click reaction and used as a cross-linker to cure hydroxyl-terminated dimethylsilicone oil at room temperature via the sol–gel process, followed by application as a coating on a glass surface. This organosilicone film functions effectively as a luminescent down-shifting (LDS) material. Additionally, the presence of methyl groups and voids in the structure imparts a low refractive index, allowing it to serve as an anti-reflective (AR) layer. Optical and structural analyses on organosilicone-coated glass samples were conducted, and the dual-functional layer was applied to the glass cover of a perovskite solar panel to evaluate its performance. The coating not only enhanced light transmission as an AR layer but also converted UV light into blue light, which was absorbed by the solar cell. The results indicated improved solar panel performance, particularly in short-circuit current (Isc), external quantum efficiency (EQE) in the UV wavelength range, and overall efficiency. Overall, this material is a promising candidate for solar panel applications owing to maximized UV absorption for LDS, preserved transparency of the top cover glass, and room-temperature gelation, which facilitates repair of the dual-functional coating. The design of broadband, high-efficiency solar absorbers remains challenging due to the complex and ill-posed inverse mapping from the target optical responses to the physical structures in inverse design optimization. To address this, we propose a joint forward–inverse deep learning framework that enables the rapid and accurate optimization of multilayer metamaterial absorbers. This method integrates an inverse network based on a Modified Swin Transformer with a Multilayer Perceptron forward proxy and performs end-to-end training in a consistency-driven cycle. This strategy reduces the one-to-many ambiguity in inverse design and improves the prediction accuracy, with normalized test mean squared errors of 7.2 × 10−5 (inverse) and 6.8 × 10−5 (forward). Using this framework, we optimized an absorber comprising W/SiO2 hyperbolic metamaterial stacks and TiO2/SiO2 anti-reflection coatings, achieving 97.4% average absorptivity across the 400–1750 nm solar spectrum, along with polarization insensitivity and robust wide-angle performance up to 60° incidence. The outdoor solar heating tests showed that the fabricated absorber reaches a peak temperature of 86.3 °C under natural sunlight, with an irradiance peak of about 850 W/m2 at noon. This work shows that combining forward and reverse deep learning provides a powerful and scalable paradigm for accelerating the intelligent design of high-performance solar thermal metamaterials. Binary oxide ceramics have emerged as key materials in solar energy research due to their versatility, chemical stability, and tunable electronic properties. This study presents a comparative analysis of seven prominent oxides (TiO2, ZnO, Al2O3, SiO2, CeO2, Fe2O3, and WO3), focusing on their functional roles in silicon, perovskite, dye-sensitized, and thin-film solar cells. A bibliometric analysis covering over 50,000 publications highlights TiO2 and ZnO as the most widely studied materials, serving as electron transport layers, antireflective coatings, and buffer layers. Al2O3 and SiO2 demonstrate highly specialized applications in surface passivation and interface engineering, while CeO2 offers UV-blocking capability and Fe2O3 shows potential as an absorber material in photoelectrochemical systems. WO3 is noted for its multifunctionality and suitability for scalable, high-rate processing. Together, these findings suggest that binary oxide ceramics are poised to transition from supporting roles to essential components of stable, efficient, and environmentally safer next-generation solar cells. Black silicon has attracted significant interest for various engineering applications, including solar cells, due to its ability to create highly absorbent surfaces or interfaces for light. It enhances light absorption in crystalline solar cells, improving the efficiency of converting incident light into electricity for photovoltaic applications. This research focused on fabricating nanostructures that played a critical role in enhancing light absorption in the upper layers of solar cells. These nanostructures were created using the black silicon method, forming a layer known as “black silicon”. The coating not only improved the efficiency of crystalline solar cells but also enhanced their stability. The antireflection coating, composed of nanostructures with various shapes, including conical, pillar-like, and spike-like forms, achieved a reflectivity as low as 10% in the spectral range of 400–700 nm. This corresponded to a sample with α = 0.85 and a chuck bias of 4 W. An Inductively Coupled Plasma Reactive Ion Etching (ICP RIE) machine was employed to develop and control the specific shape, size, and density of the fabricated black silicon, which was then subjected to testing. The efficiency of the black silicon photovoltaic cell was 23.3%. Full article

Solar cells play an increasing role in global electricity production, and it is critical to maximize their conversion efficiency to ensure the highest possible production. The number of photons entering the absorbing layer of the solar cell plays an important role in achieving a high conversion efficiency. Metal nanoparticles supporting localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) have for years been suggested for increasing light in-coupling for solar cell applications. However, most studies have focused on materials exhibiting strong LSPRs, which often come with the drawback of considerable light absorption within the solar spectrum, limiting their applications and widespread use. Recently, aluminum (Al) nanoparticles have gained increasing interest due to their tuneable LSPRs in the ultraviolet and visible regions of the spectrum. In this study, we present an ideal configuration for maximizing light in-coupling into a standard textured crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cell by determining the optimal Al nanoparticle and anti-reflection coating (ARC) parameters. The best-case parameters increase the number of photons absorbed by up to 3.3%. We give a complete description of the dominating light–matter interaction mechanisms leading to the enhancement and reveal that the increase is due to the nanoparticles optically exhibiting both particle- and thin-film characteristics, which has not been demonstrated in earlier works. The efficiency of thin film photoelectric devices can be improved by redirecting incident electromagnetic radiation along their surface layers. Redirection can be achieved using antireflection coatings made of subwavelength dielectric particle arrays. In this study, we fabricate such coatings, consisting of Ge particles on quartz glass substrates via solid-state dewetting, transforming thin Ge films into compact particles. Using optically transparent substrates, we measure reflection and transmission spectra and determine absorption spectra, showing that substrates coated with Ge particles absorb much more strongly than substrates coated with continuous Ge films. The spectra obtained using objective lenses with different aperture angles indicate that scattered radiation is predominantly directed at glancing angles to the substrate surface. The lateral propagation of scattered radiation is the result of destructive interference, which suppresses both reflected and transmitted radiation. Full article

InGaAs photodiodes have a wide range of important applications; for example, NIR imaging, fiber optical communication, and spectroscopy. In this paper, we studied InGaAs photodiodes with different doping concentration absorber layers. The simulated results suggested that, by reducing the absorber doping concentration from 1 × 1016 to 1 × 1015 cm−3, the maximum quantum efficiency of the devices can rise by 1.2%, to 58%. The simulation also showed that, by increasing the doping concentration of the absorber layer within a certain range, the dark current of the device can be slightly reduced. A PIN structure was grown and fabricated, and CV measurements suggested a low doping concentration of about 1.2 × 1015 cm−3. Although the thermal activation energy of the dark current suggested a distinct component of shunt dark current at a high temperature range, a dark current of ~6 × 10−4 A/cm2 (−0.5 V) was measured at room temperature. The peak quantum efficiency of the InGaAs device was characterized as 54.7% without antireflection coating and 80.2% with antireflection coating. Full article

In this study, we aim to minimize light loss and achieve high power conversion efficiencies (PCE) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by employing a spectral conversion film component with antireflection properties. In our scheme, NaYF4:Tm, Yb, and Gd luminescent nanorod/silica nanosphere-based thin films are applied on CH3NH3PbI3 PSCs to improve the device efficiency. The film was fabricated by spin coating an aged silica sol containing NaYF4:Tm, Yb, and Gd luminescent nanorods. The size and the spectral conversion properties of the NaYF4:Tm, Yb, and Gd luminescent nanorods were controlled by tuning the Gd3+ ion concentration. The microstructure and the transmittance properties of the thin film were controlled by changing the concentration of NaYF4:Tm, Yb, and Gd luminescent nanorod in silica sol. The thin films have excellent spectral conversion properties while exhibiting a maximum transmittance. The photovoltaic performance of PSCs with NaYF4:Tm, Yb, and Gd luminescent nanorod/silica nanosphere-based thin films was systematically investigated. The light transmittance was optimized to 95.1% on a cleaned glass substrate, which resulted in an average increase of about 3.0% across the broadband range of 400–800 nm. The optimized films widen the spectrum of light absorbed by conventional PSC cells and reduce reflections across a broad range, enhancing the photovoltaic performance of PSCs. As a result, the PCE of the PSC increased from 14.51% for the reference device without a thin film to 15.67% for the PSC device with an optimized thin film. This study presents a comprehensive solution to the problem of Fresnel reflection and spectral response mismatch of the PSCs, which provides new ideas for the light management of PSCs. Full article

Recently, the development of tandem devices has become one of the main strategies for further improving the efficiency of photovoltaic modules. In this regard, combining well-established Si technology with thin film technology is one of the most promising approaches. However, this imposes several limitations on such thin film technology, such as low prices, the absence of scarce or toxic elements, the possibility to tune optical properties and long lifetime stability. Therefore, to show the potential of kesterite/silicon tandems, in this work, a 2 terminal (2T) structure using pure germanium kesterite was simulated with combined SCAPS and transfer matrix methods. To explore the impact of individual modifications, a stepwise approach was adopted to improve the kesterite. For the bottom sub cell, a state-of-the-art silicon PERC cell was used with an efficiency of 24%. As a final result, 19.56% efficiency was obtained for the standalone top kesterite solar cell and 28.6% for the tandem device, exceeding standalone silicon efficiency by 4.6% and justifying a new method for improvement. The improvement observed could be attributed primarily to the enhanced effective lifetime, optimized base doping, and mitigated recombination at both the back and top layers of the CZGSSe absorber. Finally, colorimetric analysis showed that color purity for such tandem structure was low, and hues were limited to the predominant colors, which were reddish, yellowish, and purple in an anti-reflective coating (ARC) thickness range of 20–300 nm. The sensitivity of color variation for the whole ARC thickness range to electrical parameters was minimal: efficiency was obtained ranging from 28.05% to 28.63%. Full article

This study experimentally demonstrates two types of ultra-broadband metamaterial absorbers with high performance in the visible-to-near-infrared range by using different anti-reflection coatings (i.e., SiO2 and Si3N4) and a multi-subcell Ti-SiO2-Ti metasurface. Compared to the bare metamaterial nanostructure, the absorption bandwidth of the coated metasurfaces exhibit increases of 594 nm and 1093 nm, respectively. Such improvements benefit from nearly perfect impedance matching to the free space enhanced by the anti-reflection coating, thin film interference, and excitations of different surface plasmon resonances. As a result, the absorber with SiO2 coating exhibits a measured bandwidth with an absorption of 0.9 ranging from 502 nm to 1892 nm, while the absorber with Si3N4 coating further broadens the bandwidth from 561 nm to 2450 nm. The measured average absorptions for both cases remain above 95% and 87%, respectively. Moreover, both nanostructures are robust to large incident angles of up to 60° for both TE and TM modes. Our findings highlight the promising potential of these absorbers for various applications, including solar energy harvesting, thermal emitters, and photodetectors. Full article

Phase-Change Materials (PCMs) are widely applied in dynamic optical modulation due to the dramatic changes in their complex refractive index caused by temperature variation. As the functionality varies, the application of a single PCM cannot meet the compact, efficient and broadband needs of optical modulators. In this work, we combine vanadium dioxide (VO2) and a chalcogenide (Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) or In3SbTe2 (IST)) to obtain a VO2–GST/IST multiple-stack film that is optimized by a genetic algorithm. This film has a wide spectrum and high modulation properties with three self-switchable modes varied by temperature, including transmission, absorption and reflection. The optimal results are an average normal transmittance, absorbance, and reflectance of 0.76, 0.91, 0.86 in 3–5 μm and 0.72, 0.90, 0.90 in 8–14 μm under different temperature ranges. The film enhances the transmission and absorption properties due to the formation of anti-reflective coating and Fabry–Perot resonance. Compared with GST, the film maintains high reflectance due to the metal-like interface reflection of crystalline IST, which exhibits metallic properties. For different polarization states, the film demonstrates great directional insensitivity when the incidence angles vary from 0° to 60°. The designed self-adaptive multistage infrared radiative thermo-optic modulator has promising implications for optical fuse, fiber-optic communication and energy storage fields. Full article

In parabolic trough technology, the development of thermally and structurally stable solar coatings plays a key role in determining the efficiency, durability, and economic feasibility of tube receivers. A cermet-based solar coating is typically constituted by a thin film stratification, where a multilayer graded cermet is placed between an infrared metallic reflector and an antireflection filter. This work reports the realization of materials based on Al2O3 and W characterized by high structural and chemical stability in vacuum at high temperature, obtained through the optimization of high-deposition-rate processes. Al2O3 material, employed as the antireflection layer, was deposited through a reactive magnetron sputtering process at a high deposition rate. Cermet materials based on W-Al2O3 were deposited and employed as absorber layers by implementing reactive magnetron co-sputtering processes. An investigation into the stability of the realized samples was carried out by means of several material characterization methods before and after the annealing process in vacuum (1 × 10−3 Pa) at high temperature (620 °C). The structural properties of the samples were evaluated using Raman spectroscopy and XRD measurements, revealing a negligible presence of oxides that can compromise the structural stability. Spectrophotometric analysis showed little variations between the deposited and annealed samples, clearly indicating the high structural stability. Full article

In the current study, we aim to limit the power dissipation in amorphous silicon solar cells by enhancing the cell absorbance at different incident angles. The current improvement is justified by adding the single-period of ternary 1D photonic crystal with texturing on the top surface, which acts as an anti-reflecting coating. The texturing shape gives the photons at least two chances to localize inside the active area of the cell. Therefore, it increases the absorbance of the cell. Moreover, we add binary one-dimensional photonic crystals with the features of a photonic band gap, which acts as a back mirror to return the photons that were transmitted inside the cell’s active region. The considered structure is demonstrated by the well-defined finite element method (FEM) by using COMSOL multiphysics. Full article

Anti-reflective coating (ARC) layers on silicon (Si) solar cells usually play a vital role in the amount of light absorbed into the cell and protect the device from environmental degradation. This paper reports on the thickness optimization of hafnium oxide (HfO2) as an ARC layer for high-performance Si solar cells with PC1D simulation analysis. The deposition of the HfO2 ARC layer on Si cells was carried out with a low-cost sol-gel process followed by spin coating. The thickness of the ARC layer was controlled by varying the spinning speed. The HfO2 ARC with a thickness of 70 nm possessed the lowest average reflectance of 6.33% by covering wavelengths ranging from 400–1000 nm. The different thicknesses of HfO2 ARC layers were used as input parameters in a simulation study to explore the photovoltaic characteristics of Si solar cells. The simulation findings showed that, at 70 nm thickness, Si solar cells had an exceptional external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 98% and a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.15%. The thicknesses of HfO2 ARC considerably impacted the photovoltaic (PV) characteristics of Si solar cells, leading to achieving high-performance solar cells. Full article

The visible and infrared wavelengths are the most frequently used electromagnetic (EM) waves in the frequency spectrum; able to penetrate the atmosphere and reach Earth’s surface. These wavelengths have attracted much attention in solar energy harvesting; thermography; and infrared imaging applications for the detection of electrical failures; faults; or thermal leakage hot spots and inspection of tapped live energized components. This paper presents a numerical analysis of a compact cubic cross-shaped four-layer metamaterial absorber (MA) structure by using a simple metal-dielectric-metal-dielectric configuration for wideband visible and infrared applications. The proposed MA achieved above 80% absorption in both visible and near-infrared regions of the spectrum from 350 to 1250 nm wavelength with an overall unit cell size of 0.57λ × 0.57λ × 0.59λ. The SiO2 based anti-reflection coating of sandwiched tungsten facilitates to achieve the wide high absorption bandwidth. The perceptible novelty of the proposed metamaterial is to achieve an average absorptivity of 95.3% for both visible and infrared wavelengths with a maximum absorptivity of 98% from 400 nm to 900 nm. Furthermore, the proposed structure provides polarization insensitivity with a higher oblique incidence angle tolerance up to 45°. Full article
