While the Ankom RF system facilitates efficient high-throughput in vitro fermentation studies, its high cost and limited flexibility constrain its broader applicability. To address these limitations, we developed and validated a low-cost, modular gas monitoring system (FerME), assembled from commercially available components. To evaluate its performance and reproducibility relative to the Ankom RF system (Ankom Technology, Macedon, NY, USA), in vitro rumen fermentation experiments were conducted under strictly controlled and identical conditions. Whole rumen contents were collected approximately 2 h post-feeding from individual mid- or late-lactation dairy cows and immediately transported to the laboratory. Each fermenter received 50 mL of processed rumen fluid, 100 mL of anaerobically prepared artificial saliva buffer, and 1.2 g of the donor cow’s diet. Bottles were sealed with the respective system’s pressure sensors, flushed with CO2, and incubated in a 50 L water bath maintained at 39 °C. FerME (New Taipei City, Taiwan) and Ankom RF fermenters were placed side-by-side to ensure uniform thermal conditions. To assess the effect of filter bag use, an additional trial employed Ankom F57 filter bags (Ankom Technology, Macedon, NY, USA; 25 μm pore size). Trial 1 revealed no significant differences in cumulative gas production, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), NH3-N, or pH between systems (p > 0.05). However, the use of filter bags reduced gas output and increased propionate concentrations (p < 0.05). Trial 2, which employed filter bags in both systems, confirmed comparable results, with the FerME system demonstrating improved precision (CV: 4.8% vs. 13.2%). Gas composition (CH4 + CO2: 76–82%) and fermentation parameters remained consistent across systems (p > 0.05). Importantly, with 12 pressure sensors, the total cost of FerME was about half that of the Ankom RF system. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that FerME is a reliable, low-cost alternative for real-time rumen fermentation monitoring and could be suitable for studies in animal nutrition, methane mitigation, and related applications. Since 1992, we have promoted the use of descriptions from ethnographic data, including ancient, surviving oral traditions, to aid in explaining the iconography portrayed in pictographs and petroglyphs found in Missouri, particularly those at Picture Cave. The literature to which we refer is from American Indian groups related linguistically and connected to the pre-Columbian inhabitants of Missouri. In addition, we have had on-going conversations with many elder tribal members of the Dhegiha Sioux language group (including the Osage, Quapaw, and Kansa (the Ponca and Omaha are also part of this cognate linguistic group)). With the copious collections of southern Siouan ethnographic accounts, we have been able to explain salient features in the iconography of several of the detailed rock art motifs and vignettes, and propose interpretations. This Midwest region is part of the Cahokia interaction sphere, an area that displays western Mississippian symbolism associated with that found in Missouri rock art as well as on pottery, shell, and copper. Integrating BIM curriculum into traditional construction management (CM) programs is essential to meet the increasing industry demand for BIM-ready graduates. However, academia struggles with BIM curriculum integration due to unfamiliar emerging BIM technologies, and the increased workload associated with curriculum transformation. Disciplines including nursing, health science, and medical overcame the same challenges using the ability-desire-knowledge-ability-reinforcement (ADKAR) change management model, while CM programs have not explored this model for BIM curriculum development. Thus, this research introduces the ADKAR change management lens to BIM curriculum development by proposing a practically modified and replicable ADKAR model for CM programs. Focus group interviews with 14 academics from the UK, USA, Korea, and Australia, revealed establishing a sense of urgency by appointing a BIM champion is the most critical step before the BIM curriculum development. Instant advice demystifying uncertain BIM concepts is recognised the most effective motivation among academia. Well-balanced BIM concept integrations is ‘sine qua non’ since excessively saturating BIM aspects across the program can dilute students’ essential domain knowledge. Students’ evaluation over the BIM curriculum were collected through a six-year longitudinal focus group interviews, revealing that progressive BIM learnings scaffolded from foundational concepts to advanced applications throughout their coursework is the most valuable. This study investigated the evolving trends, current research hotspots, and future directions of radiotherapy combined with nanobiomaterials through a bibliometric analysis. Publications related to nanobiomaterials used in radiotherapy between 2004 and 2024 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database and analyzed using VOSviewer, R, and CiteSpace. China emerged as the leading contributor, accounting for 1051 publications (50.41%), followed by the USA. Liu Zhuang is the most productive author in this field. American Chemical Society (ACS) Nano published the most influential articles and accumulated the highest number of citations. Advanced Targeted Therapies in Cancer: Drug Nanocarriers, the Future of Chemotherapy was the most cited, with 1255 citations. Citation bursts have revealed emerging research trends in targeted delivery, cellular studies, co-delivery strategies, immunogenic cell death, polymeric nanoparticles, tumor research, and drug delivery systems, indicating potential avenues for future research. Over the past two decades, nanomaterials for radiotherapy have gained substantial attention. Key areas of focus include enhancing the efficacy of radiotherapy, achieving targeted drug delivery, minimizing adverse effects, and integrating nanomaterials with other therapeutic modalities. Future investigations are expected to improve the precision of radiotherapy, augment radiation effects, and optimize the tumor microenvironment. Full article

Photoplethysmography-Based Blood Pressure Calculation for Neonatal Telecare in an IoT Environment

This study presents an algorithm for non-invasive blood pressure (BP) estimation in neonates using photoplethysmography (PPG), suitable for resource-constrained neonatal telecare platforms. Using the Windkessel model, the algorithm processes PPG signals from a MAX 30102 sensor, (Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated), based in San Jose, CA, USA) filtering motion noise and extracting cardiac cycle time and systolic time (ST). These parameters inform a derived blood flow signal, the input for the Windkessel model. Calibration utilizes average parameters based on the newborn’s post-conceptional age, weight, and gestational age. Performance was validated against readings from a standard non-invasive BP cuff at SES Hospital Universitario de Caldas. Two parameter estimation methods were evaluated. The first yielded root mean square errors (RMSEs) of 24.14 mmHg for systolic and 19.13 mmHg for diastolic BP. The second method significantly improved accuracy, achieving RMSEs of 2.31 mmHg and 5.13 mmHg, respectively. The successful adaptation of the Windkessel model to single PPG signals allows for BP calculation alongside other physiological variables within the telecare program. A device analysis was conducted to determine the appropriate device based on computational capacity, availability of programming tools, and ease of integration within an Internet of Things environment. This study paves the way for future research that focuses on parameter variations due to cardiovascular changes in newborns during their first month of life. Full article

Head-to-Head Comparison of Meril Myval Series Balloon-Expandable and Abbott Portico Series Self-Expanding Transcatheter Aortic Valves—A Single-Center Experience

Background and Objectives: Transcatheter heart valve (THV) selection is challenging as self-expanding valves (SEVs) are associated with lower post-procedural mean aortic gradients, while balloon-expandable valves (BEVs) have lower rates of paravalvular leak (PVL) and permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI). We aimed to compare the 30-day and 1-year outcomes following Myval BEV (Meril Life Sciences, Vapi, Gujarat, India) and intra-annular Portico SEV (Abbott, St. Paul, MN, USA) implantation. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data from the all-comer TAVI registry of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, Slovenia, from October 2017 to August 2023. Safety and efficacy outcomes following Myval BEV and Portico SEV implantation were compared overall and after propensity score matching. Results: Of the total 1152 THVs implanted, 97 patients (8%) received a Myval BEV and 47 (4%) a Portico SEV. After propensity score matching, there were no significant differences between the two patient cohorts regarding 30-day (Myval 0.0% vs. Portico 2.9%, p = 1.000) and 1-year mortality (Myval 0.0% vs. Portico 5.9%, p = 0.492). Likewise, the rates of new PPI, device failure (mean aortic gradient and more than mild PVL), and periprocedural in-hospital complications were comparable between the two groups. Conclusions: In this retrospective analysis of two intra-annular THVs, the Myval BEV was associated with comparable short- and mid-term outcomes as the Portico SEV. Full article

Aiming at the lightweight design of a bridge-shed integration structure, this paper presents a three-layered absorbing system in which a part of the sand cushion is replaced by expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam and the reinforced concrete (RC) protective slab is arranged above the sand cushion to enhance the composite system’s safety. A three-dimensional Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics–Finite Element Method (SPH-FEM) coupled numerical model is developed in LS-DYNA (Livermore Software Technology Corporation, Livermore, CA, USA, version R13.1.1), with its validity rigorously verified. The dynamic response of rockfall impacts on the shed slab with composite cushions of various thicknesses is analyzed by varying the thickness of sand and EPS materials. To optimize the cushion design, a specific energy dissipation ratio (SEDR), defined as the energy dissipation rate per unit mass (η/M), is introduced as a key performance metric. Furthermore, the complicated interactional mechanism between the rockfall and the optimum-thickness composite system is rationally interpreted, and the energy dissipation mechanism of the composite cushion is revealed. Using logistic regression, the ultimate stress state of the reactive powder concrete (RPC) slab is methodically analyzed, accounting for the speed and mass of the rockfall. The results are indicative of the fact that the composite cushion not only has less dead weight but also exhibits superior impact resistance compared to the 90 cm sand cushions; the impact resistance performance index SEDR of the three-layered absorbing system reaches 2.5, showing a remarkable 55% enhancement compared to the sand cushion (SEDR = 1.61). Additionally, both the sand cushion and the RC protective slab effectively dissipate most of the impact energy, while the EPS material experiences relatively little internal energy build-up in comparison. This feature overcomes the traditional vulnerability of EPS subjected to impact loads. One of the highlights of the present investigation is the development of an identification model specifically designed to accurately assess the stress state of RPC slabs under various rockfall impact conditions. The work presents a comprehensive analysis and costing of sugar beet cultivation in 2020–2022, for individual farms of the Lublin region. About 120 farms were analyzed. Based on this analysis, the criteria for a model farm were determined and adopted for the calculation of sugar beet production costs. ARIMA process modeling was performed, based on which forecasts were determined for several selected parameters. Customs tariffs introduced by the USA have a drastic impact on the economy. The effects of the COVID19 pandemic may also have a significant impact on the current market situation. Forecasting in the current geopolitical situation is very difficult because of the lack of stationarity of parameters. The financial result obtained by growers is mainly influenced by indirect costs absorbing 61.31% of total costs in 2020. In 2021 and 2022, indirect costs were 61.16% and 59.61% of production income, respectively. Among this group of costs, the largest share is accounted for by the costs of sowing services, sugar beet harvesting, and soil liming amounting from 14.27% to 15.92%. During the analyzed period, sugar beet cultivation remained profitable, with a production profitability index of 1.31 in 2020 and 2021, and 1.10 in 2022. The unit cost of production increased every year. In 2020, it was 14.27% and in 2021, it increased to 15.19%. The unit cost of production in 2022 was the highest, at 23.41%. Sugar beet cultivation is one of the profitable activities in agricultural production, but it is characterized by high production costs, which increased during the years analyzed (2020 to 2022), topping out at 90.87% of total revenue. The information and data presented in this study will be used in the development of a farmer-oriented application and will support the creation of an expert system for sugar beet growers. Due to small population size, Population Viability Analysis (PVA) of endangered species often pools all individuals into a single matrix to decrease variation in estimation of transition rates. These pooled populations may mask significant environmental variation among populations, affecting estimates. Using 10 years of population data (2000–2010) on the endangered plant Jacquemontia reclinata in Southeastern Florida, USA, I parameterized a stage-structured matrix model and calculated annual growth rates (lambdas)and elasticity for each year using stochastic matrix models. The metapopulation model incorporating actual dynamics of the two largest populations showed a lower occupancy rate and higher risk of extinction at an earlier time compared to a model that used the average of all natural populations. Analyses were consistent that incorporating population variation versus average dynamics in modeling J. reclinata demography results in more variation and greater extinction risk. Local variation may be due to both weather (including minimum winter temperature and total annual precipitation) and local disturbance dynamics in these urban preserves. Full article

High-precision 6D pose estimation for pick-and-place operations remains a critical problem for industrial robot arms in manufacturing. This study introduces an analytics-based solution for 6D pose estimation designed for a real-world industrial application: it enables the Staubli TX2-60L (manufactured by Stäubli International AG, Horgen, Switzerland) robot arm to pick up metal plates from various locations and place them into a precisely defined slot on a brake pad production line. The system uses a fixed eye-to-hand Intel RealSense D435 RGB-D camera (manufactured by Intel Corporation, Santa Clara, California, USA) to capture color and depth data. A robust software infrastructure developed in LabVIEW (ver.2019) integrated with the NI Vision (ver.2019) library processes the images through a series of steps, including particle filtering, equalization, and pattern matching, to determine the X-Y positions and Z-axis rotation of the object. The Z-position of the object is calculated from the camera’s intensity data, while the remaining X-Y rotation angles are determined using the angle-of-inclination analytics method. It is experimentally verified that the proposed analytical solution outperforms the hybrid-based method (YOLO-v8 combined with PnP/RANSAC algorithms). Experimental results across four distinct picking scenarios demonstrate the proposed solution’s superior accuracy, with position errors under 2 mm, orientation errors below 1°, and a perfect success rate in pick-and-place tasks. Directed Energy Deposition is an additive manufacturing subgroup that uses a laser beam to melt the wire or powder to create a melt pool. In the current study, a scientometric analysis has been carried out to analyze the contribution of countries, publication type analysis, distribution of publications over the years, keywords analysis, author analysis, cited journal, categories, institutes of publication, and report the practical implications. Firstly, the database was extracted from the Web of Science and then post-processed with CiteSpace 6.2.R4 and VOSviewer 1.6.20 software. Afterward, the associated results had been extracted and reported. It was found that China is the leader according to publication, followed by the USA and Germany, which mostly published their achievements in article and proceeding paper formats, which are increasing annually. According to the keywords, additive manufacturing, Laser Metal Deposition, and fabrication are the most commonly used. Based on the CiteSapce and VOSviewer results, Lin, Xin and Huang, Weidong are the authors with the highest publication rates. In addition, Additive Manufacturing, Materials & Design, and Materials Science and Engineering: A are the most cited journals, and regarding the categories, materials science, multidisciplinary, applied physics, and manufacturing engineering are the most commonly used DED processes. Northwestern Polytechnical University, Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, and the United States Department of Energy (DOE) have performed the most research in the field of DED. Full article

Compared to commuting, grocery shopping trips, despite their profound implications for mixed land use and transportation planning, have received limited attention in travel behavior research. Drawing upon a travel diary survey conducted in a fast-growing metropolitan region of the United States, i.e., Salt Lake County, UT, this research investigated a variety of influential factors affecting mode choices associated with grocery shopping. We analyze how built environment (BE) characteristics, measured at seven spatial scales or different ways of aggregating spatial data—including straight-line buffers, network buffers, and census units—affect travel mode decisions. Key predictors of choosing walking, biking, or transit over driving include age, household size, vehicle ownership, income, land use mix, street density, and distance to the central business district (CBD). Notably, the influence of BE factors on mode choice is sensitive to different spatial aggregation methods and locations of origins and destinations. The straight-line buffer was a good indicator for the influence of store sales amount on mode choices; the network buffer was more suitable for the household built environment factors, whereas the measurement at the census block and block group levels was more effective for store-area characteristics. These findings underscore the importance of considering both the spatial analysis method and the location (home vs. store) when modeling non-work travel. A multi-scalar approach can enhance the accuracy of travel demand models and inform more effective land use and transportation planning strategies. Full article

Background. Physicomechanical properties and clinical service of bulk-fill composites depend on their adequate polymerization and depth of cure. Some manufacturers claim that these composites can be adequately cured when used in bulks exceeding 4 mm. Objective. The aim of this study was to compare Vickers microhardness (VMH) and depth of cure (DOC) of six contemporary bulk-fill resin composites at depths of 4 mm and 6 mm. Material and methods. Six bulk-fill composites were evaluated in this study: 1. Tetric EvoCeram Bulk (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), (TEC); 2. Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior (3M ESPE Dental Products Division, St. Paul, MN, USA), (FBF); 3. Filtek One Bulk Fill (3M ESPE Dental Products Division, St. Paul, MN, USA, (FOB); 4. SonicFill 2 (Kerr, Orange, CA, USA), (SF2); 5. Admira Fusion X-tra (Voco, GmbH, Cuxhaven, Germany), (AFX); 6. GrandioSO X-tra (Voco, GmbH, Cuxhaven, Germany), (GSX). The 18 specimens (3 of each composite) were prepared in split Teflon moulds of 4 mm diameter and 6 mm thickness. All composites were cured in standard mode for 20 s using LED LCU (D-Light Duo, RF-Pharmaceuticals Sarl, Geneva, Switzerland; 1200–1300 mW/cm). The VMH was measured using a digital Micro Hardness Tester Shimadzu (HMV-2T E, Shimadzu Corporation, Kyoto, Japan). A 50 g (0.5 N) load force was applied for 30 s. Each specimen was measured at five places selected by chance at each level (N = 15). The hardness ratio or DOC was calculated for all samples as the ratio of bottom and surface microhardness at levels of 4 and 6 mm. Data were analysed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test. Results. Significant reduction in VMH was observed for all tested materials when comparing top surface and bottom (p < 0.01). The highest VMH was obtained for GSX and AFX, and the lowest for TEC. The results show that the degree of polymerization was adequate for all tested materials at a depth of 6 mm, since the hardness ratio exceeded 0.80 in all cases. The hardness ratio at 4 mm was high for all tested composites ranging from 0.91 for TEC to 0.98 for GSX. All composites showed adequate DOC at the bottom of the 6 mm bulk samples. However, the hardness ratio was the highest for Admira Fusion X-tra (0.96) and GrandioSO X-tra (0.97). Conclusions. All tested materials showed a significant decrease in microhardness from the top surface to the bottom. The DOC was adequate for all bulk-fill composites at a depth of 6 mm cured under standard mode for 20 s. All bulk-fill resin composites evaluated in this study can be used in bulk, up to 6 mm. The Fernald Feed Materials Production Center (FMPC), located in Fernald, Ohio, USA, released radon (Rn) as a byproduct of the processing of uranium materials during the years from 1951 to 1989. Rn is a colorless, odorless gas that emits charged alpha radiation that interacts with cells in the lung and trachea-bronchial tree, leading to DNA damage, mutations, and tumor initiation. The purpose of this project was to use evidence collected by the Fernald Dosimetry Reconstruction Project and other sources to estimate the outdoor Rn exposure to individuals in the community immediately surrounding the FMPC during the years of plant operation. Using previously tabulated source terms, diffusion and meteorological data, and self-reported detailed residential histories, we estimated radon exposure for approximately 9300 persons who lived at more than 14,000 addresses. The results indicated that a portion of the population cohort experiences mean annual Rn exposure exceeding the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) action limit of 4 pCiL−1. These exposure estimates support the analysis of the incidence of lung cancer in the Fernald Community Cohort (FCC). Full article

Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis (MAH) is a zoonotic pathogen with a broad host range and diverse clinical manifestations. We report here the first documented case of MAH-induced fatal vasculitis in zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata). Histopathological examination revealed acid-fast bacilli within macrophages and endothelial cells, primarily affecting the heart and aorta. Mycobacterial DNA was detected in cloacal swabs from affected finches and environmental samples from their housing facility. PCR targeting the rpoB gene and insertion elements IS1245 and IS901, followed by sequencing, confirmed MAH infection. MAH DNA was identified in 4 of 13 finch cloacal swabs and 7 of 28 environmental samples. This study describes a novel, highly pathogenic manifestation of MAH in birds and underscores the potential for avian involvement in environmental and zoonotic transmission. Full article
