Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is an advanced imaging geodesy technique for detecting and characterizing surface deformation with high spatial resolution and broad spatial coverage. However, as an inherently post-event observation method, InSAR suffers from limited capability for near-real-time and short-term updates of deformation time series. In this paper, we proposed a data-driven adaptive framework for deformation prediction based on a hybrid deep learning method to accurately predict the InSAR-derived deformation time series and take the Xi’erguazi−Mawo landslide complex (XMLC) as a case study. The InSAR-derived time series was initially decomposed into trend and periodic components with a two-step decomposition process, which were thereafter modeled separately to enhance the characterization of motion kinematics and prediction accuracy. After retrieving the observations from the multi-temporal InSAR method, two-step signal decomposition was then performed using the Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN) and Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD). The decomposed trend and periodic components were further evaluated using statistical hypothesis testing to verify their significance and reliability. Compared with the single-decomposition model, the further decomposition leads to an overall improvement in prediction accuracy, i.e., the Mean Absolute Errors (MAEs) and the Root Mean Square Errors (RMSEs) are reduced by 40–49% and 36–42%, respectively. Subsequently, the Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network and the proposed CNN-BiLSTM-SelfAttention (CBS) models were constructed to predict the trend and periodic variations, respectively. The CNN and self-attention help to extract local features in time series and strengthen the ability to capture global dependencies and key fluctuation patterns. Compared with the single network model in prediction, the MAEs and RMSEs are reduced by 22–57% and 4–33%, respectively. Finally, the two predicted components were integrated to generate the fused deformation prediction results. Ablation experiments and comparative experiments show that the proposed method has superior ability. Through rapid and accurate prediction of InSAR-derived deformation time series, this research could contribute to the early-warning systems of slope instabilities. Full article

Ocean waves are created by energy passing through water, causing it to move in a circular motion and have a crucial impact on the safety of ship navigation, offshore engineering construction, and marine disaster early warning. Therefore, developing high-precision, real-time wave observation technology to accurately obtain wave parameters is very important. This study employs a One-Vertical-Two-Inclined Millimeter-Wave Radar Array (1V2I-MMWRA) to observe wave parameters in the South China Sea. Based on the measured displacement time series, significant wave height, mean wave height, significant wave period, and mean wave period were estimated using both the zero-crossing method and spectral estimation. The system performance was validated against an air–sea interface flux buoy. Experimental results demonstrate that the zero-crossing method exhibits superior precision. The Root-Mean-Square Errors (RMSEs) for the aforementioned parameters were 0.13 m, 0.11 m, 0.81 s, and 0.46 s, respectively. In contrast, spectral estimation yielded higher RMSEs of 0.20 m, 0.16 m, 1.07 s, and 0.74 s, primarily attributed to increased deviations during typhoon passage. Furthermore, directional spectrum analysis reveals that peak frequency and Power Spectral Density (PSD) intensify with the strengthening of the typhoon, while estimated wave directions align closely with in situ measurements. These findings confirm the high reliability of the 1V2I-MMWRA under extreme conditions, highlighting its distinct advantages of lower power consumption and ease of deployment. Full article

The interpretation and diagnosis of central sleep apnea in pediatrics by nocturnal polysomnography is challenging due to its technical complexity, which involves the simultaneous recording of multiple physiological parameters related to sleep and wakefulness. Furthermore, the unfamiliar environment of a sleep laboratory can hinder sleep evaluation, and diagnostic backlogs are common due to restricted capacity at specialist tertiary centers. The ability to undertake home sleep studies in a familiar environment using simple, robust, and low-cost technology is attractive. The potential to repurpose the PneumoWave biosensor, a UKCA Class 1 device, registered as an accelerometer-based monitoring device that is intended to capture and store chest motion data continuously over a period of time for retrospective analysis, was explored in an in vitro model of central sleep apnea. The PneumoWave system contains a biosensor (PW010), which was able to record simulated apnea episodes of 5 to 20 s across physiologically relevant pediatric breathing rates using an in vitro manikin model and manual annotation. The findings confirm that the PneumoWave biosensor could be a useful technology to support home sleep apnea testing and warrant further exploration. Full article

Background/Objectives: Quadriceps arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI) represents a key impairment following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), contributing to quadriceps weakness. Although transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS) have been primarily investigated for analgesia, their effects on quadriceps strength in the early postoperative period remain underexplored. Methods: This study describes a single-blinded, parallel-group randomized controlled trial investigating the short-term effects of a single high-frequency TENS session and a novel long-term potentiation (LTP) PENS protocol on quadriceps strength and related clinical outcomes after ACLR. Fifty-four participants will be randomly allocated using block randomization in a 1:1:1 ratio to one of three groups: a control group (conventional post-ACLR rehabilitation only), a TENS group (conventional rehabilitation plus a single high-frequency TENS session), or a PENS group (conventional rehabilitation plus a single LTP PENS session). Participants will receive neuromodulatory intervention during the sixth postoperative week. The LTP PENS protocol consists of five 5 s stimulation bursts at 100 Hz and 250 μs pulse width and has only been investigated once in patients with upper limb pathology, underscoring its novelty in a postoperative setting. Results: The primary outcome is quadriceps maximal voluntary isometric contraction, selected as a clinically relevant surrogate of quadriceps activation deficits associated with AMI. Secondary outcomes include pain intensity, pressure pain threshold, knee range of motion, thigh muscle perimeter, knee effusion and swelling, and self-reported function and knee-related quality of life. Outcomes will be assessed at baseline, immediately post-treatment, and 1 and 7 days post-intervention by a blinded assessor. Full article

Background and Objectives: Lumbar disk herniation with radiculopathy (LDHR) is a prevalent neuromusculoskeletal condition characterized by nociceptive and neuropathic pain components. Manual therapy (MT) is commonly used in its management, whereas Functional Magnetic Stimulation (FMS) represents an emerging modality with limited evidence in radiculopathy. The aim of this study was to examine the short-term effects of combining MT with FMS compared with MT alone on pain intensity, neuropathic pain features, neural mechanosensitivity, and functional disability in individuals with chronic LDHR. Materials and Methods: Forty adults with MRI-confirmed unilateral LDHR were randomly allocated to an MT + FMS group or an MT-only group. Both groups received ten treatment sessions over three weeks. Outcomes included lumbar and leg pain intensity (NPRS), functional disability (RMDQ), neuropathic pain symptoms (S-LANSS), and straight leg raise (SLR) range of motion. Measurements were obtained at baseline and at week 3. Group and time effects were examined using a two-way mixed ANOVA with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Significant group × time interactions were observed for all outcomes (p < 0.01), indicating greater improvements in the MT + FMS group. Reductions in lumbar and leg pain, disability, and S-LANSS scores exceeded established MCID thresholds, while SLR gains surpassed published MDC values, reflecting both statistical and clinical relevance. Only the MT + FMS group improved below the neuropathic pain diagnostic cutoff (S-LANSS < 12). Conclusions: The findings of this trial suggest that incorporating FMS into a manual therapy program may provide additional short-term clinical benefits for individuals with chronic LDHR. Further research with larger samples, longer follow-up periods, and mechanistic assessments is needed to confirm these preliminary results and to better understand the underlying mechanisms. To reduce manual operation and enhance the intelligence of the high-altitude maintenance wall-climbing robot during its operation, path planning and autonomous navigation need to be implemented. Due to non-uniform magnetic adhesion between the wall-climbing robot and the steel plate, often caused by variations in steel thickness or surface pitting, the wall-climbing robot may experience motion deviations and deviate from its planned trajectory. In order to obtain the actual deviation from the expected trajectory, it is necessary to accurately locate the wall-climbing robot. This allows for the generation of precise control signals, enabling trajectory correction and ensuring high-precision autonomous navigation. Therefore, this paper proposes an external visual localization system based on a pan–tilt laser tracker unit. The system utilizes a zoom camera to track an AprilTag marker and drives the pan–tilt platform, while a laser rangefinder provides high-accuracy distance measurement. The robot’s three-dimensional (3D) pose is ultimately calculated by fusing the visual and ranging data. However, due to the limited tracking speed of the pan–tilt mechanism relative to the robot’s movement, we introduce an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to robustly predict the robot’s true spatial coordinates. The robot’s three-dimensional coordinates are periodically compared with the predefined route coordinates to calculate the deviation. This comparison generates closed-loop control signals for the robot’s movement direction and speed. Finally, based on the LoRa communication protocol, closed-loop control of the robot’s movement direction and speed are achieved through the upper-level computer, ensuring that the robot returns to the predefined track. Extensive comparative experiments demonstrate that the localization system achieves stable localization with an accuracy better than 0.025 m on a 6 m × 2.5 m steel structure surface. Based on this high-precision positioning and motion correction, the robot’s motion deviation is kept within 0.1 m, providing a reliable pose reference for precise motion control and high-reliability operation in complex structural environments. Modulating boundary conditions offers a powerful approach to generate and control topological defects, which govern the structure and dynamics of liquid crystals. Here, we employ Langevin dynamics simulations to study defect structure formation in two-dimensional colloidal liquid crystals confined within a square cavity whose walls undergo periodic oscillation. The spatial topology of the driving boundary from single-side to global four-wall actuation directly sets the symmetry of energy input, which in turn determines its spatial gradient and distribution. By controlling boundary vibrations through amplitude and frequency, we demonstrate the emergence of novel steady-state patterns and transformations between distinct defect structures, identified via the local order parameter. Four-wall oscillation generates richer structural diversity due to its higher spatial symmetry. Structural transitions are quantified by tracking a global director angle under two driving regimes: varying amplitude at fixed frequency (f = 2.0), and varying frequency at fixed amplitude (A = 1.0). Our results establish that the manner of energy injection determined by the choice of boundary motion mode governs the emergent defect architectures, providing a general route to engineer non-equilibrium phases under confinement. In the study of disordered hyperuniformity, which bridges ordered and disordered states and has broad implications in physics and biology, active matter systems offer a rich platform for spontaneous pattern formation. This work investigates frustrated Vicsek–Kuramoto systems, where frustration induces complex collective behaviors, to explore how hyperuniform states arise. We numerically analyze the phase diagram via the structure factor S(q) and the density variance δρ2R. Results show that recessive lattice states exhibit Class I hyperuniformity under high coupling strength and intermediate frustration, emerging from the interplay of frustration-induced periodicity and active motion, characterized by dynamic, drifting rotation centers rather than static order. Notably, global hyperuniformity emerges from the spatial complementarity of orientation subgroups that are individually non-hyperuniform, a phenomenon termed “orientation-modulated hyperuniformity”. This work establishes frustration as a novel mechanism for generating hyperuniform states in active matter, highlighting how anisotropic interactions can yield global order from disordered components, with potential relevance to biological systems and material science. This work explores the qualitative dynamics of the modified unstable time-fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation (mUNLSE), a model applicable to nonlinear wave propagation in plasma and optical fiber media. By transforming the governing equation into a planar conservative Hamiltonian system, a detailed bifurcation study is carried out, and the associated equilibrium points are classified using Lagrange’s theorem and phase-plane analysis. A family of exact wave solutions is then constructed in terms of both trigonometric and Jacobi elliptic functions, with solitary, kink/anti-kink, periodic, and super-periodic profiles emerging under suitable parameter regimes and linked directly to the type of the phase plane orbits. The validity of the solutions is discussed through the degeneracy property which is equivalent to the transmission between the phase orbits. The influence of the fractional derivative order on amplitude, localization, and dispersion is illustrated through graphical simulations, exploring the memory impacts in the wave evolution. In addition, an externally periodic force is allowed to act on the mUNLSE model, which is reduced to a perturbed non-autonomous dynamical system. The response to periodic driving is examined, showing transitions from periodic motion to quasi-periodic and chaotic regimes, which are further confirmed by Lyapunov exponent calculations. These findings deepen the theoretical understanding of fractional Schrödinger-type models and offer new insight into complex nonlinear wave phenomena in plasma physics and optical fiber systems. During deepwater completion and testing, the platform and riser system are subjected to long-term motions induced by ocean currents, which may cause structural damage and potential failure of the landing string. This study investigates the mechanical and fatigue performance of a subsea Christmas tree and landing string under environmental conditions of the LH11-1 Oilfield in the South China Sea. A global–local simulation framework is used to build a coupled dynamic model of the riser–landing string system and a local model for the landing string, considering load-transfer characteristics, current profiles, periodic features, and two representative environmental conditions (typhoon and non-typhoon). For seventeen typical operating scenarios, the strength of the riser–landing string system is evaluated, and wave-induced and vortex-induced fatigue analyses are performed for the key components. The stress distribution strongly depends on operating conditions, but local strength results confirm that stresses in the primary landing string components remain below allowable limits in all scenarios. Fatigue analysis indicates that the most severe wave-induced damage in the riser occurs at its bottom section, with a fatigue life of about 15.12 years, while in the landing string, it is concentrated near the lower end, with an estimated life of about 52.68 years. The maximum vortex-induced fatigue damage occurs near the riser surface region, with a corresponding fatigue life of about 18.52 years. Full article

Flexible and wearable pressure sensors are essential for monitoring of human motion and are distinguished by their increased sensitivity and outstanding mechanical robustness. In this study, we systematically engineered a flexible and wearable pressure sensor with a multilayer conductive architecture, arranging a sponge substrate coated in a consecutive manner with a barium zirconium titanate thin film, followed by polypyrrole, multiwalled carbon nanotubes, and eventually polydimethylsiloxane. The foundation of additional conductive pathways is enabled via the utilization of a porous framework and the hierarchical arrangement, causing the achievement of an excellent sensitivity of 9.71 kPa−1 (0–9 kPa), a rapid 40 ms response time, and a fast 60 ms recovery period, combined with a particularly low detection limit (125 Pa) and an extended pressure range from 0 to 225 kPa. Furthermore, the integration of a rough and porous barium zirconium titanate/barium titanate thin film is expected to deliver a voltage output (1.25 V) through piezoelectric working mechanisms. This study possesses the potential to provide an innovative architecture design for advancing the development of future electronic devices for health and sports monitoring. Full article

This study used high-resolution Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry to monitor erosion patterns on a mudstone badland platform in southwestern Taiwan over a 22-month period. Five UAV surveys conducted between 2017 and 2018 were processed using Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry to generate time-series digital surface models (DSMs). Topographic changes were quantified using DSMs of Difference (DoD). The results reveal intense surface lowering, with a mean erosion depth of 34.2 cm, equivalent to an average erosion rate of 18.7 cm yr−1. Erosion is governed by a synergistic regime in which diffuse rain splash acts as the dominant background process, accounting for approximately 53% of total erosion, while concentrated flow drives localized gully incision. Morphometric analysis shows that erosion depth increases nonlinearly with slope, consistent with threshold hillslope behavior, but exhibits little dependence on the contributing area. Plan and profile curvature further influence the spatial distribution of erosion, with enhanced erosion on both strongly concave and convex surfaces relative to near-linear slopes. The gully network also exhibits rapid channel adjustment, including downstream meander migration and associated lateral bank erosion. These findings highlight the complex interactions among hillslope processes, gully dynamics, and base-level controls that govern badland landscape evolution and have important implications for erosion modeling and watershed management in high-intensity rainfall environments. This paper investigates the optimal control problem of orbital rendezvous for spacecraft in near-circular orbits with a low-thrust propulsion system. Two optimality criteria are considered: time-optimal and motor-time-optimal control. A linearized mathematical model of relative motion between the active and passive spacecraft is employed, which is formulated in dimensionless variables that characterize secular, periodic, and lateral motion components of the relative motion. By applying Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle, the equations governing the optimal relative motion of the spacecraft are derived. To address the discontinuities associated with the bang–bang switching function inherent in the motor-time-optimal problem, and the lack of a suitable initial guess, a homotopy method is adopted, in which the solution to the rendezvous time-optimal problem is used as an initial guess and is gradually deformed into the motor-time-optimal control. Considering the errors introduced by the linearization of the relative motion model, the obtained control law is validated via numerical simulations based on the original nonlinear dynamics of the system. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed trajectory optimization methodology achieves high success rates and rapid convergence, providing valuable theoretical support and practical guidance for mission scenarios with similar trajectory design requirements. Background/Objectives: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to assess muscle function while performing a motion task within the scanner. Quantitative measures such as contraction velocity and strain can be derived from the images. Cine phase contrast (PC) MRI for time-resolved imaging of muscle function relies on the consistently repeated execution of the motion task for several minutes until data acquisition is complete. This may be difficult for patients with neuromuscular dysfunctions. To date, this approach has been applied only in adults, but not pediatric populations. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the feasibility of PC MRI for assessing calf muscle function during electrically evoked and voluntary motion in children with cerebral palsy (CP) using open-source hardware and software. Methods: Cine PC MRI was performed at 3T in ambulatory pediatric patients with CP and typically developing children under electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) (n = 14/13) and during voluntary plantarflexion (n = 4/4) using a home-built pedal with a force sensor. A visual feedback software was developed to enable synchronized imaging of voluntary muscle contractions. Muscle contraction velocity and strain were calculated from the MRI data. Data quality was rated by two readers. Results: During EMS, the velocity data quality was rated as sufficient in 21% of scans in patients compared with 82% of scans in controls. During the voluntary task, all patients demonstrated increased compliance and greater generated force output than during EMS. Voluntary motion imaging was successful in all controls but none of the patients, as motion periodicity in patients was worse during voluntary than during stimulated contraction. Conclusions: Cine phase-contrast MRI combined with EMS or voluntary motion proved challenging in pediatric patients with CP, particularly in those with more severe baseline muscle dysfunction or reduced tolerance to stimulation. In contrast, the approach was successfully implemented in typically developing children. Although the scope of the patient-based findings is limited by data heterogeneity, the method demonstrates considerable potential as a tool for monitoring treatment-related changes in muscle function, particularly in less severely affected patients. Further refinement of the EMS and voluntary motion protocols, together with a reduction in MRI acquisition time, is required to improve motion periodicity, tolerability, and consequently the overall success rate in the intended pediatric patient cohort. The present paper investigates the dynamic behavior of an unbalanced rotor mounted in a balancing machine. Differential equations of motion are derived without linearization using Lagrange equations of the second kind to determine the nonlinear nature of the system. This study proposes a method for using differential equations in balancing to determine important parameters, such as the coordinates of the center of mass and the products of inertia of the rotor. An analysis of the interactions between the periodicities of the individual terms in the differential equations is carried out in order to eliminate terms with difficult-to-determine moments of inertia.
