Floating solar technology has gained significant attention as part of the global expansion of renewable energy due to its potential for installation in underutilized water bodies. Several countries, including the Netherlands, have initiated efforts to extend this technology from inland freshwater applications to open offshore environments, particularly within offshore wind farm areas. This development is motivated by the synergistic benefits of increasing site energy density and leveraging the existing offshore grid infrastructure. The deployment of offshore floating photovoltaic (OFPV) systems involves assembling multiple modular units in a marine environment, introducing operational risks that may give rise to safety concerns. To mitigate these risks, weather windows must be considered prior to the task execution to ensure continuity between weather-sensitive activities, which can also lead to additional time delays and increased costs. Consequently, optimizing marine logistics becomes crucial to achieving the cost reductions necessary for making OFPV technology economically viable. This study employs a simulation-based approach to estimate the installation duration of a 5 MWp OFPV plant at a Dutch offshore wind farm site, started in different months and under three distinct risk management scenarios. Based on 20 years of hindcast wave data, the results reveal the impacts of campaign start months and risk management policies on installation duration. Across all the scenarios, the installation duration during the autumn and winter period is 160% longer than the one in the spring and summer period. The average installation durations, based on results from 12 campaign start months, are 70, 80, and 130 days for the three risk management policies analyzed. The result variation highlights the additional time required to mitigate operational risks arising from potential discontinuity between highly interdependent tasks (e.g., offshore platform assembly and mooring). Additionally, it is found that the weather-induced delays are mainly associated with the campaigns of pre-laying anchors and platform and mooring line installation compared with the other campaigns. In conclusion, this study presents a logistics modeling methodology for OFPV systems, demonstrated through a representative case study based on a state-of-the-art truss-type design. The primary contribution lies in providing a framework to quantify the performance of OFPV installation strategies at an early design stage. The findings of this case study further highlight that marine installation logistics are highly sensitive to local marine conditions and the chosen installation strategy, and should be integrated early in the OFPV design process to help reduce the levelized cost of electricity. To meet the growing demand for space launches and overcome the limitations of land-based launches, the scientific research community is committed to developing safer and more flexible offshore rocket launch technologies. Their core carriers—marine platforms—are directly exposed to the dynamic and variable marine environment. The complex coupling effects of wind, waves, and currents impose severe challenges upon these platforms, causing complex phenomena such as severe rocking. These phenomena pose severe threats to and significantly interfere with the stability and normal execution of offshore rocket launch operations. This study employs CFD simulation software to analyze liquid sloshing within a cylindrical tank, both with and without baffles. Following validation of the natural frequency, the analysis focuses on the suppression effect of different baffle positions and configurations on tank sloshing. The numerical simulation results indicate the following: Incorporating baffles alters the natural frequency of liquid sloshing within the tank and effectively suppresses the free surface motion. The suppression of the wave surface motion improves as the baffle is positioned closer to the free surface and as the number of perforations in the baffle increases. However, when the number of perforations exceeds a certain threshold, further increasing it yields negligible improvement in the suppression of the sloshing wave surface motion. Full article

Impact of Hydrogen Release on Accidental Consequences in Deep-Sea Floating Photovoltaic Hydrogen Production Platforms

Hydrogen is a potential key component of a carbon-neutral energy carrier and an input to marine industrial processes. This study examines the consequences of coupled hydrogen release and marine environmental factors during floating photovoltaic hydrogen production (FPHP) system failures. A validated three-dimensional numerical model of FPHP comprehensively characterizes hydrogen leakage dynamics under varied rupture diameters (25, 50, 100 mm), transient release duration, dispersion patterns, and wind intensity effects (0–20 m/s sea-level velocities) on hydrogen–air vapor clouds. FLACS-generated data establish the concentration–dispersion distance relationship, with numerical validation confirming predictive accuracy for hydrogen storage tank failures. The results indicate that the wind velocity and rupture size significantly influence the explosion risk; 100 mm ruptures elevate the explosion risk, producing vapor clouds that are 40–65% larger than 25 mm and 50 mm cases. Meanwhile, increased wind velocities (>10 m/s) accelerate hydrogen dilution, reducing the high-concentration cloud volume by 70–84%. Hydrogen jet orientation governs the spatial overpressure distribution in unconfined spaces, leading to considerable shockwave consequence variability. Photovoltaic modules and inverters of FPHP demonstrate maximum vulnerability to overpressure effects; these key findings can be used in the design of offshore platform safety. This study reveals fundamental accident characteristics for FPHP reliability assessment and provides critical insights for safety reinforcement strategies in maritime hydrogen applications. As the development of offshore wind energy transforms from coastal to deep-sea regions, designing a cost effective mooring system while ensuring the safety of floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) remains a critical challenge, especially considering extreme wave environments. This study employs a model coupling computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element method (FEM) to investigate the responses of a parked FOWT platform with its mooring system under rogue wave conditions. Specifically, the mooring dynamics are solved using a local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method, which is believed to provide high accuracy. Firstly, rogue wave generation and the coupled CFD-FEM are validated through comparisons with existing experimental and numerical data. Secondly, FOWT platform motions and mooring tensions caused by a rogue wave are obtained through simulations, which are compared with the ones caused by a similar peak-clipped rogue wave. Lastly, analysis of four different mooring design schemes is conducted to evaluate their performance on reducing the mooring tensions. The results indicate that the rogue wave leads to significantly enlarged FOWT platform motions and mooring tensions, while doubling the number of mooring lines with specific line angles provides the most balanced performance considering cost-effectiveness and structural safety under identical rogue wave conditions. Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) unlock superior wind resources and reduce operational barriers. The dynamics of FOWT platforms present added engineering challenges and opportunities. While the motion of the floating platform due to wind and wave disturbances can worsen power quality and increase structural loading, certain movements of the floating platform can be exploited to improve power capture. Consequently, active FOWT platform control methods using conventional and innovative actuation systems are under investigation. This paper develops a novel framework to design nonlinear control laws for six degrees-of-freedom platform motion. The framework uses simplified rigid-body analytical models of the FOWT. Lyapunov’s direct method is used to develop actuator-agnostic unconstrained control laws for platform translational and rotational control. A model based on the NREL-5MW reference turbine on the OC3-Hywind spar-buoy platform is utilized to test the control framework for an ideal actuation scenario. Possible applications using traditional and novel turbine actuators and future research directions are presented. Full article

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) provides all-weather, all-time imaging capabilities, enabling reliable maritime ship detection under challenging weather and lighting conditions. However, most high-precision detection models rely on complex architectures and large-scale parameters, limiting their applicability to resource-constrained platforms such as satellite-based systems, where model size, computational load, and power consumption are tightly restricted. Thus, guided by the principles of lightweight design, robustness, and energy efficiency optimization, this study proposes a three-stage collaborative multi-level feature fusion framework to reduce model complexity without compromising detection performance. Firstly, the backbone network integrates depthwise separable convolutions and a Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) to suppress background clutter and extract effective features. Building upon this, a cross-layer feature interaction mechanism is introduced via the Multi-Scale Coordinated Fusion (MSCF) and Bi-EMA Enhanced Fusion (Bi-EF) modules to strengthen joint spatial-channel perception. To further enhance the detection capability, Efficient Feature Learning (EFL) modules are embedded in the neck to improve feature representation. Experiments on the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Ship Detection Dataset (SSDD) show that this method, with only 1.6 M parameters, achieves a mean average precision (mAP) of 98.35% in complex scenarios, including inshore and offshore environments. It balances the difficult problem of being unable to simultaneously consider accuracy and hardware resource requirements in traditional methods, providing a new technical path for real-time SAR ship detection on satellite platforms. This study explores virtual sensing techniques for the Eolink floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT), which features a pyramidal platform and a single-point mooring system that enables weathervaning to maximize power production and reduce structural loads. To address the challenges and costs associated with monitoring submerged components, virtual sensors are investigated as an alternative to physical instrumentation. The main objective is to design a virtual sensor of mooring hawser loads using a reduced set of input features from GPS, anemometer, and inertial measurement unit (IMU) data. A virtual sensor is also proposed to estimate the bending moment at the joint of the pyramid masts. The FOWT is modeled in OrcaFlex, and a range of load cases is simulated for training and testing. Under defined sensor sampling conditions, both supervised and physics-informed machine learning algorithms are evaluated. The models are tested under aligned and misaligned environmental conditions, as well as across operating regimes below- and above-rated conditions. Results show that mooring tensions can be estimated with high accuracy, while bending moment predictions also perform well, though with lower precision. These findings support the use of virtual sensing to reduce instrumentation requirements in critical areas of the floating wind platform. Full article

With the expansion of offshore oil and gas resources to deepwater areas, the problem of the vortex-induced vibration of marine risers, as a key structure connecting offshore platforms and subsea wellheads, has become increasingly prominent. At present, there are few reviews on the vortex-induced vibration of flexible risers. This review provides a detailed discussion of vortex-induced vibration in marine risers. This review begins with the engineering background. It then systematically analyzes the key factors that influence VIV response. These factors include the riser’s structural parameters, such as aspect ratio and mass ratio. They also include the external fluid environment. Next, this review evaluates current VIV suppression strategies by analyzing specific experimental results. It compares the effectiveness and trade-offs of passive techniques. It also examines the potential and limitations of active methods, which often use smart materials, like piezoelectrics. This study highlights the major challenges in VIV research today. These challenges relate to prediction accuracy and suppression efficiency. Key problems include model uncertainty at high Reynolds numbers and the practical implementation of suppression devices in engineering systems. Finally, this paper presents an outlook on the future directions. It concludes that an intelligent, full-lifecycle integrity management system is the best path forward. Full article

Offshore wind turbine structures (OWTs) commonly use monopile foundations for support, and long-term exposure to wind–wave cyclic loads may induce changes in foundation stiffness. Variations in foundation stiffness can significantly alter the inherent vibration characteristics of OWTs, potentially leading to amplified vibrations or resonant conditions. In this study, a numerical model considering soil–pile interaction was developed on the FLAC3D platform to analyze the natural frequency of OWTs under long-term cyclic loading. The study first validated the numerical model’s effectiveness through comparison with measured data; a degradation stiffness model (DSM) was then embedded to assess how prolonged cyclic loading affects the degradation of foundation stiffness. A series of parametric studies were conducted in medium-dense and dense sand layers to investigate natural frequency alterations induced by prolonged cyclic loading. Finally, a simplified method for evaluating long-term natural frequency changes was established, and a 3.6 MW offshore wind turbine case was used to reveal the evolution characteristics of its natural frequency under long-term cyclic loads. The data reveal that the natural frequency of the structure undergoes a downward tendency as cyclic loading and frequency increase. To ensure long-term safe operation, the designed natural frequency should preferably shift toward 3P (where P is the blade rotation frequency). Full article

This study provides a comprehensive overview of vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) for emerging energy applications by combining a bibliometric analysis and a thematic mini-review. Scopus-indexed publications from 1979 to 2025 were analyzed using PRISMA guidelines and bibliometric tools (Bibliometrix, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer) to map global research trends, and a parallel mini-review distilled recent advances into five thematic areas: aerodynamic strategies, advanced materials, urban integration, hybrid systems, and floating offshore platforms. The results reveal that VAWT research output has surged since 2006, led by China with strong contributions from Europe and North America, and is concentrated in leading renewable energy journals. Dominant topics include computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, performance optimization, wind–solar hybrid integration, and adaptation to turbulent urban environments. Technologically, active and passive aerodynamic innovations have boosted performance albeit with added complexity, remaining mostly at moderate technology readiness (TRL 3–5), while advanced composite materials are improving durability and fatigue life. Emerging applications in microgrids, building-integrated systems, and offshore floating platforms leverage VAWTs’ omnidirectional, low-noise operation, although challenges persist in scaling up, control integration, and long-term field validation. Overall, VAWTs are gaining relevance as a complement to conventional turbines in the sustainable energy transition, and this study’s integrated approach identifies critical gaps and high-priority research directions to accelerate VAWT development and help transition these turbines from niche prototypes to mainstream renewable solutions. This study identifies the optimal location for an offshore energy island to supply sustainable power to desalination plants along the Red Sea coast. As demand for clean energy in water production grows, integrating renewables into desalination systems becomes increasingly essential. A decision-making framework was developed to assess site feasibility based on renewable energy potential (solar, wind, and wave), marine traffic, site suitability, planned developments, and proximity to desalination facilities. Data was sourced from platforms such as Windguru and RETScreen, and spatial analysis was conducted using Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). Results indicate that the central Red Sea region offers the most favorable conditions, combining high renewable resource availability with existing infrastructure. The estimated regional desalination energy demand of 2.1 million kW can be met using available renewable sources. Integrating these sources is expected to reduce local CO2 emissions by up to 43.17% and global desalination-related emissions by 9.5%. Spatial constraints for offshore installations were also identified, with land-based solar energy proposed as a complementary solution. The study underscores the need for further research into wave energy potential in the Red Sea, due to limited real-time data and the absence of a dedicated wave energy atlas. Full article

Driven by the environmental benefits associated with reduced greenhouse gas emissions, oil companies have intensified research efforts into reassessing the strategies used to meet the electrical demands of offshore production platforms. Among the various alternatives available, the deployment of onshore–offshore interconnections via High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems has emerged as a promising solution, offering both economic and operational advantages. In addition to reliably meeting the electrical demand of offshore facilities, this approach enables enhanced operational flexibility due to the advanced control and regulation capabilities inherent to HVDC converter stations. Based on the use of interconnection through an HVDC link, aiming to evaluate the operation of the electrical system as a whole, this study focuses on evaluating dynamic events using the PSCAD software version 5.0.2 to analyze the direct online starting of a large induction motor and the sudden loss of a local synchronous generating unit. The simulation results are then analyzed to assess the effectiveness of both Grid-Following (GFL) and Grid-Forming (GFM) control strategies for the converters, while the synchronous generators are evaluated under both voltage regulation and constant power factor control operation, with a particular focus on system stability and restoration of normal operating conditions in the sequence of events. During offshore operations of jack-up platforms, the spudcan may experience sudden punch-through failure when penetrating from an overlying stiff clay layer into the underlying soft clay, posing significant risks to platform safety. Conventional punch-through prediction methods, which rely on predetermined soil parameters, exhibit limited accuracy as they fail to account for uncertainties in seabed stratigraphy and soil properties. To address this limitation, based on a database of centrifuge model tests, a probabilistic prediction framework for the peak resistance and corresponding depth is developed by integrating empirical prediction formulas based on Bayes’ theorem. The proposed Bayesian methodology effectively refines prediction accuracy by quantifying uncertainties in soil parameters, spudcan geometry, and computational models. Specifically, it establishes prior probability distributions of peak resistance and depth through Monte Carlo simulations, then updates these distributions in real time using field monitoring data during spudcan penetration. The results demonstrate that both the recommended method specified in ISO 19905-1 and an existing deterministic model tend to yield conservative estimates. This approach can significantly improve the predicted accuracy of the peak resistance compared with deterministic methods. Additionally, it shows that the most probable failure zone converges toward the actual punch-through point as more monitoring data is incorporated. The enhanced prediction capability provides critical decision support for mitigating punch-through potential during offshore jack-up operations, thereby advancing the safety and reliability of marine engineering practices. Drag embedment anchors (DEAs) provide reliable and cost-effective mooring solutions for floating structures, e.g., platforms, ships, offshore wind turbines, etc., in offshore engineering. Structural stability and operational safety require accurate predictions of their penetration depths and holding capacities across various seabed conditions. In this study, explicit linear regression (LR) models were developed for the first time to predict the penetration depth and holding capacity of DEAs on clay and sand seabed. Buckingham’s theorem was also applied to identify dimensionless groups of parameters that influence DEA behavior, e.g., the penetration depth and holding capacity of the DEAs. LR models were developed and validated against experimental data from the literature for both clay and sand seabed. To evaluate model performance and identify the most accurate LR models to predict DEA behavior, comprehensive sensitivity, error, and uncertainty analyses were performed. Additionally, LR analysis revealed the most influential input parameters impacting penetration depth and holding capacity. Regarding offshore mooring design and geotechnical engineering applications, the proposed LR models offered a practical and efficient approach to estimating DEA performance across various seabed conditions. Thin plates are commonly used in mechanical structures such as ship hulls, offshore platforms, aircraft, automobiles, and bridges. When subjected to in-plane compressive loads, these structures may experience buckling. In some applications, perforations are introduced, altering membrane stress distribution and buckling behavior. This study investigates the elasto-plastic buckling behavior of perforated plates using the Finite Element Method (FEM), Constructal Design (CD), and Exhaustive Search (ES) techniques. Simply supported thin rectangular plates with central elliptical perforations were analyzed under biaxial elasto-plastic buckling. Three shapes of holes were considered—circular, horizontal elliptical, and vertical elliptical—along with sixteen aspect ratios and two different materials. Results showed that higher yield stress leads to higher ultimate stress for perforated plates. Regardless of material, plates exhibited a similar trend: ultimate stress decreased as the aspect ratio dropped from 1.00 to around 0.40 and then increased from 0.35 to 0.25. A similar pattern was observed in the stress components along both horizontal (x) and vertical (y) directions, once the y-component became considerably higher than the x-component for the same range of 0.40 to 0.25. For longer plates, in general, the vertical elliptical hole brings more benefits in structural terms, due to the facility in the distribution of y-components of stress. Full article
