Introduction: The fish fauna in the Yucatan Peninsula exhibit a unique composition, shaped by the region’s complex geological and hydrological history. Thorichthys meeki is a widely distributed cichlid species that has been the subject of morphological, behavioral, and phylogenetic studies. Nevertheless, the historical and biogeographical processes that have shaped its diversification and genetic structure remain unexplored. Objective: The objective of this study was to identify phylogeographic patterns and assess the genetic diversity of T. meeki in southeastern Mexico. Methodology: Genomic DNA was extracted from the muscle tissue of specimens preserved in 90% ethanol. DNA was amplified using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequences were obtained from two molecular markers: cytochrome oxidase 1 (CO1) and S7 intron 1. Phylogeographic analyses included genetic diversity indices molecular variance analyses to assess population structure and haplotype networks. Results: A total of 60 CO1 and 40 S7 intron 1 sequences were obtained from 26 sampling sites. For CO1, 14 haplotypes were identified, with high haplotype diversity (Hd = 0.84), and low nucleotide diversity (π = 0.0048). For S7 intron 1, 16 haplotypes were recovered with lower haplotype diversity (Hd = 0.543) and π = 0.021. A hierarchical AMOVA (2 groups) showed the greatest variation; 72.3% in CO1 and 79.8% in S7 within population groups with significant ΦST values. Haplotype networks identified three haplogroups for each gene. A single CO1 haplotype was found in 26 sequences from 13 sampling sites. For S7 intron 1, one haplotype was identified in 22 sequences and was shered from all populations. Conclusions: A widely distributed haplotype for CO1 and S7 reflects historical connectivity among hydrological systems. These preliminary results provide an interesting insights into the processesthat have influenced the distribution of T. meeki on the Yucatán Peninsula. Full article

This study examines how transnational Mayan youth in rural Nebraska preserved and developed their linguistic heritage through the Kematzib’ Project while maintaining digital connections to Guatemala. Using Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) methodologies, K’iche’ and Q’anjob’al-speaking adolescents served as co-researchers, creating trilingual educational materials through poetry workshops and digital storytelling. Digital technologies facilitated both language preservation and transnational family connections, as participants utilized the same tools to create educational materials and maintain contact with their relatives in Guatemala. The collaborative creation of digital books that integrated Popol Wuj elements with contemporary transnational experiences helped students overcome linguistic shame, develop cultural pride, and build advocacy skills applicable across U.S. and Guatemalan contexts. This research illustrates how youth can activate transnational funds of knowledge while developing identities encompassing multiple national, cultural, and linguistic affiliations. Full article

Brosimum alicastrum Swartz (Mayan Nut) is a traditional Mesoamerican resource with nutritional potential exceeding many cereal grains, yet its therapeutic efficacy relative to processing remains under-researched. This study investigated the impact of geographic origin and processing on its hypolipidemic and antioxidant properties. Seed flours from Campeche (green raw—GsF), Nayarit (dried—DsF), and Yucatán (commercial roasted—RsF) were evaluated. Following proximal analysis and acute toxicity screening (up to 2000 mg/kg), effects were tested in a tyloxapol-induced hypertriglyceridemia rat model monitoring triglyceride (TG), and hepatic oxidative stress (OS) biomarkers. Proximal profiles were stable across regions. All samples were non-lethal, and, significantly, DsF and RsF achieved a maximum reduction of TG and protein carbonyl content (PCC) at only 200 mg/kg, whereas raw GsF required 2000 mg/kg. Hypertriglyceridemia induced a compensatory increase in SOD activity (~555%), which was maintained across all treated groups. Conversely, tyloxapol depleted GSH-Px activity by 16%, and only DsF, at 20 mg/kg, preserved activity statistically similar to the healthy control (6.71 ± 0.65 IU/μL). Drying and roasting seemed critical for enhancing the acute therapeutic effects observed at lower dosages. Full article

The Mam Mayan Christians of Guatemala’s Western Highlands regularly ascend sacred mountains to pray for the precarious migration journey across Mexico and into the United States. This paper describes and explicates the cultural logic connecting mountains, migration, and prayer through an analysis of linguistic practices across three domains: (1) the tacit and habitual reference to mountains in common Mam grammatical form classes, (2) the discourse patterns that link the precarities of migration to mountaintop prayer, and (3) the context for and structure of mountaintop prayer rituals. Taken together, the analysis of these three domains describes a Mam ontology of mountains that render mountaintop prayer the most important venue for facing the precarities of international migration. The paper closes by considering the habitus of Mam Maya Evangelical Christians as a source of Indigenous theological praxis. Full article

Although the role of proline (Pro) as an important osmolyte has been extensively studied, there are few comprehensive studies on their metabolism under salinity conditions. We investigated Pro metabolism in two habanero pepper varieties with contrasting salinity responses: Mayan Chan (tolerant) and Mayan Ba’alche (sensitive). First, a phylogenetic analysis of enzymes participating in their biosynthesis, P5CS and P5CR, and in its degradation, PDH, was performed. Additionally, the levels of their transcripts, the enzymatic activity, and Pro content were determined in plants subjected to 150 mM NaCl by short (0, 24, 48 and 72 h) and long (seven days) periods. Potassium flux in roots exposed to NaCl, in the absence or presence of Pro, was also measured. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the sequences were grouped according to their taxonomic family and not by salt tolerance of the species. Molecular and biochemical analyses showed significant differences between organs and varieties; the tolerant variety showed highest levels of transcripts, biosynthesis enzymes activities and accumulation of Pro. The results suggested that Pro metabolism in habanero pepper is a complex process, that is regulated at different levels and differentially between organs and varieties. Exogenous Pro only reduced potassium efflux in the sensitive variety exposed to NaCl, suggesting that a precise threshold of this amino acid is required to perform this function. Full article

Introduction: Gestational diabetes (GD) screening remains limited in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to resource constraints, limited training, and low community awareness. Although community-centered approaches may improve access to screening in rural and Indigenous settings, the implementation processes through which such approaches are designed and operationalized are rarely documented. Methods: This study presents a community-based implementation process report describing the development, adaptation, and early implementation of a GD screening program in rural Guatemala, guided by the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, and Sustainment (EPIS) implementation science framework. Using a participatory approach, international screening guidelines were systematically adapted to the local context through iterative protocol refinement, structured stakeholder engagement, and ongoing feedback from community health educators and partner institutions. Aggregate program data were used descriptively to characterize early screening uptake and feasibility. Results: Key implementation challenges included patient no-shows, community skepticism, and difficulties among health educators in interpreting screening procedures. Iterative adaptations were introduced to simplify protocols, reduce loss to follow-up, and strengthen community engagement. Over time, the program expanded from point-of-care screening to more comprehensive prenatal services and increased collaboration with the Ministry of Health and local community outlets. A total of 103 Indigenous Mayan Tz’utujil women were screened (mean age: 26.9 years; range: 15–46), of whom, 12 were diagnosed with GD. Conclusions: This implementation process report demonstrates the scientific value of systematically documenting real-world adaptation, feasibility, and stakeholder engagement when introducing GD screening in rural Indigenous LMIC settings. The implementation lessons described may inform similar maternal health initiatives in comparable contexts. Full article

Over the centuries, human interaction with natural resources has allowed us to build knowledge that has given rise to cultures and regions around the world. In Mexico, particularly in the Yucatán Peninsula region, the traditional Mayan house (TMH) represents a symbol of identity and ancestral knowledge of the Mayan culture and a way of life for the inhabitants of rural communities. However, there is little information on the flora used as raw materials for the construction of the TMH; considering that its structure is being modified with modern materials. The objective of this study has been to identify the different plant species used as raw materials for the construction of TMHs in different Mayan communities in northern Campeche, Mexico. A total of 27 surveys were conducted in seven communities using the snowball method, using non-probability convenience sampling. In total, 100% of the respondents were male, between 18 and 86 years old, of whom 73% learned about the construction of the TMH through knowledge transferred by their parents, while the remaining 27% learned from their grandparents. For the construction of the TMH, a total of 18 plant species were recorded; 100% of the respondents mentioned that they use Sabal yapa “Xa’an guano” (in Mayan) for the construction of the roof. Another 18% mentioned the use of grass (Spartina spartinae). It can be therefore concluded that there is a hybridization of the TMH, since the roofs are replaced with zinc sheets due to the low cost of modern materials and the low availability of Sabal yapa in some areas of northern Campeche. Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide worldwide and in Mexico; however, its effects on soil microbiota in traditional agroecosystems remain unclear. We evaluated bacterial, archaeal, and fungal responses to commercial glyphosate in three representative karst soils of the Yucatán Peninsula (black Leptosol, red Leptosol, and red Cambisol) historically associated with the Mayan milpa system. The high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA V4 and ITS1 regions was used to assess diversity patterns and differential abundance. Glyphosate application did not significantly alter alpha or beta diversity; however, fifteen taxa classified at the genus level exhibited shifts in relative abundance. Most bacterial taxa were depauperated in treated soils, whereas others, such as Arthrobacter, were enriched after application, indicating the presence of tolerant or resistant bacteria that may play a role in glyphosate degradation. Cordyceps, an entomopathogenic fungus, was depleted, indicating potential for natural pest control. The similarity of the core microbiota between samples with and without glyphosate application indicates that these communities are resilient. Overall, under short-term exposure, glyphosate induced compositional shifts in specific taxa without major effects on community structure but with potential implications for soil functionality and resilience in the Mayan milpa. The great city of Mayapan has experienced a technological change in pottery making, and our results confirm a shift in the raw materials and possibly the potters’ knowledge about them. The dynamics of change during the Postclassic period in the Maya area are reflected in the material changes used to make pottery. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on a collection of 248 pottery items from the archaeological site of Mayapán in Yucatán, Mexico, dating from the Middle Preclassic to Postclassic periods (700 BC–1500 CE). Non-invasive methods were used for the entire pottery set, including X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and fiber-optic reflectance spectroscopy (FORS). Additionally, for a representative subset, minimally invasive techniques such as inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) were employed. The resulting data enabled the identification of materials used in the pottery’s manufacture. The elemental composition of the objects was determined, revealing correlations between elements such as Si with Al that yield a R2 factor of 0.94. The results indicate the presence of smectite clays, carbonates, and iron oxides. The results show that a higher proportion of carbonates was found in the pieces from the Postclassic period compared to those from the Preclassic period, which may be associated with a change in the manufacturing process. Likewise, the Postclassic pieces are distinguished by a greater contribution of the Mg-OH signal, unlike the Preclassic and Classic, which show a greater contribution of the Al-OH group. The implications for the technological knowledge of the potters suggest the use of different technologies across various periods and material changes driven by shifts in political and economic relations in the city and the northern plains. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a multifactorial disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia. The FTO variant rs9939609 has been widely associated with obesity, but emerging evidence suggests a broader role for T2D risk across diverse populations. However, Mayan ancestry individuals remain underrepresented in genetic studies. Thus, we evaluated the association of rs9939609 with T2D, fasting glucose, and HbA1c in a southeastern Mexican region with prevalent Mayan ancestry. Birthplace was used as a proxy for ancestry, although no formal ancestry assessment was conducted. The A allele was associated with increased risk for T2D in both additive (OR = 1.88 [1.08–3.40], p = 0.031) and dominant (OR = 2.09 [1.08–4.15], p = 0.032) models, even after adjusting for age, sex, BMI, waist circumference, and waist/hip ratio. The A allele was also associated with increased fasting glucose and HbA1c levels in the dominant model. Mediation analysis suggested that T2D may mediate the effect of rs9939609-A on glucose traits. rs9939609-A may be a risk factor for T2D and elevated glucose levels in this population. However, the results should be interpreted with caution due to the limited sample size, which may result in under- or overestimation of effect sizes. Full article

This study explores the detection and classification of aguadas (ponds) in the Bajo El Laberinto region, in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, Campeche, Mexico, using remote sensing techniques. Lidar-derived digital elevation models (DEMs), orthophotos and satellite imagery from multiple sources were employed to identify and characterize these water reservoirs, which played a crucial role in ancient Maya water management and continued to be vital for contemporary wildlife. By comparing different visualization techniques and imagery sources, the study demonstrates that while lidar data provides superior topographic detail, satellite imagery—particularly with nominal 3 m, or finer, spatial resolution with a near-infrared band—offers valuable complementary data including present-day hydrological and vegetative characteristics. In this study, 350 aguadas were identified in the broader region. The shapes, canopy cover, and topographic positions of these aguadas were documented, and the anthropogenic origin of most features was emphasized. The paper’s conclusion states that combining various remote sensing datasets enhances the identification and understanding of aguadas, providing insights into ancient Mayan adaptive strategies and contributing to ongoing archaeological and ecological research. Hearing loss is a genetically heterogeneous sensory defect for which biallelic pathogenic variants in the GJB2 gene are a frequent cause. Here, we report a novel intragenic large deletion in GJB2 in a Mayan family with several members affected by congenital non-syndromic hearing loss. The analysis of the GJB2 gene in the proband was performed through Sanger sequencing. A novel homozygous 1259 bp deletion in GJB2 was identified, starting at nucleotide 248 of the coding region and ending at nucleotide 825 of the 3′-UTR (g.20188077_20189335del). Bioinformatic tools were used to predict the structural impact of the variant. This deletion would result in a truncated protein of 86 amino acids, p.(Phe83Cysfs*5), disrupting several critical domains of the connexin-26 protein. We developed an endpoint-PCR assay to test for the deletion. It was present homozygously in all affected siblings and was absent in 153 ethnically matched controls with normal hearing. Both parents and two unaffected siblings were heterozygous carriers, consistent with an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. In assessing disability within rural communities, it is crucial to explore the intersection of sociodemographic and health factors. This cross-sectional study, conducted between June and December 2022 in 16 rural locations in Yucatan, aimed to analyze how sociodemographic and occupational factors influence the perception of disability in Mayan communities, with a particular focus on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disability was evaluated disability in a sample of 1049 participants using the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS). Descriptive analyses and non-parametric tests were performed to characterize the sample and WHODAS scores. The participants’ mean age was 39.26 ± 17.87 years, and significant differences in disability perception were observed in relation to a COVID-19 diagnosis. Individuals with a confirmed diagnosis reported higher levels of disability in the domains of cognition and community participation (p < 0.05). Age strongly influenced disability (p < 0.05). Additionally, education was negatively associated with disability, suggesting that individuals with lower educational attainment were more likely to report higher disability (p < 0.05). These findings contribute to the understanding of disability in the rural Mayan context. Full article

“Coexpressivity” is the property of utterances that marshal multiple linguistic elements and modalities simultaneously to perform the distinct linguistic functions of Jakobson’s classic analysis (1960). This study draws on a longitudinal corpus of natural conversation recorded over six decades with an accomplished “master speaker” of Tsotsil (Mayan), adept at using his language to manage different aspects of social life. The research aims to elaborate the notion of coexpressivity through detailed examples drawn from a range of circumstances. It begins with codified emic speech genres linked to prayer and formal declamation and then ranges through conversational narratives to gossip-laden multiparty interaction, to emphasize coexpressive connections between speech as text and concurrent gesture, gaze, and posture among interlocutors; audible modalities such as sound symbolism, pitch, and speech rate; and finally, specific morphological characteristics and the multifunctional effects of lexical choices themselves. The study thus explores how multiple functions may, in principle, be coexpressed simultaneously or contemporaneously in individual utterances if one takes this range of modalities and expressive resources into account. The notion of “master speaker” relates to coexpressive virtuosity by linking the resources available in speech, body, and interactive environments to accomplishing a wide range of social ends, perhaps with a special flourish although not excluded from humbler, plainer talk. Objectives: This study evaluated the effectiveness of three-dimensional (3D) navigated transsacral screw fixation in patients with sacral insufficiency fractures (SIF) who experienced inadequate mobilization after conservative management. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 53 patients (mean [±standard deviation] age 78.7 [±10.8] years; range 43.7–92.4; 81.1% female) with sacral insufficiency fractures confirmed by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Documented osteoporosis was present in 28 (52.8%) of these patients. All had failed conservative management due to persistent sacral pain or inability to mobilize. Therefore, they underwent 3D-navigated transsacral screw fixation. We collected data on demographics, fracture classification (FFP system), pain levels (Visual Analog Scale [VAS]), opioid consumption, time to mobilization, and length of hospital stay. Clinical outcomes were recorded at discharge, 1 month, and 3 months post-op; telephone interviews were conducted between 1 January and 28 February 2024 to assess longer-term pain relief and functional status. Results: Using the fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFP) classification, 60.8% of patients had FFP IIa fractures, 11.8% had FFP IIc, and 21.6% had FFP IVb. Two transsacral screws were placed in 34.0% of cases and three in 38.0%. We observed significant postoperative pain reduction—median (interquartile range [IQR]) VAS-at-rest decreased from 5 (4) preoperatively to 2 (2) at discharge and 0 (1) at 3 months (p < 0.001)—along with reduced opioid use (from 92.5% of patients on the immediate postoperative day to 45.0% at 3 months, p = 0.003). Early mobilization was achieved in 96.2% of patients. The mean hospital stay was 11.7 ± 5.1 days (95% confidence interval [CI]: 10.3–13.2; range 3–25 days), with the few outlier cases (>21 days) attributable to medical complications or delayed rehabilitation placement. The overall complication rate was low (7.5%, predominantly minor wound issues), and the 3-month reoperation rate was 7.7%. Conclusions: The 3D-navigated transsacral screw fixation is a minimally invasive and effective approach for managing sacral insufficiency fractures. It provides substantial pain relief, enables early mobilization, and demonstrates a low complication rate at 3 months. This technique shows promise in improving short-term outcomes for patients who do not respond to conservative care, regardless of osteoporosis status, although further research is needed to evaluate long-term fracture healing and functional recovery.
