This study evaluated the ballistic performance and failure mechanisms of epoxy-based hybrid laminates reinforced with abaca/UHMWPE and pineapple leaf fiber (PALF)/UHMWPE fabrics fabricated by using vacuum-assisted hand lay-up. Ballistic tests utilized 9 mm full metal jacket (FMJ) rounds (~426 m/s impact velocity) under NIJ Standard Level IIIA conditions (44 mm maximum allowable BFS). This experimental test was complemented by finite element analysis (FEA) incorporating an energy-based bilinear fracture criterion to simulate matrix cracking and fiber pull-out. The results showed that abaca/UHMWPE composites exhibited lower backface signature (BFS) and depth of penetration (DOP) values (~23 mm vs. ~42 mm BFS; ~7 mm vs. ~9 mm DOP) than PALF/UHMWPE counterparts, reflecting superior interfacial adhesion and more ductile failure modes. Accelerated weathering produced matrix microcracking and delamination in both systems, reducing overall ballistic resistance. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed improved fiber–matrix bonding in abaca composites and interfacial voids in PALF laminates. The FEA results reproduced major failure modes, such as delamination, fiber–matrix debonding, and petaling, and identified stress concentration zones that agreed with experimental observations, though the extent of delamination was slightly underpredicted. Overall, the study demonstrated that abaca/UHMWPE hybridcomposites offer enhanced ballistic performance and durability compared with PALF/UHMWPE laminates, supporting their potential as sustainable alternatives for lightweight protective applications. Hyaluronic acid (HA)-based fillers are widely used in aesthetic dermatology for their biocompatibility, reversibility, and safety; however, adverse events (AEs) may occur. This review evaluated the safety profile, focusing on short- and long-term AEs, of HA fillers manufactured with MACRO (MAtrix CROsslinking) Core Technology, encompassing both current saypha and former Princess products. A systematic PubMed search identified prospective clinical trials assessing safety outcomes following facial aesthetic use of these fillers. Eleven studies including 947 patients met the inclusion criteria. The most common short-term AEs were transient swelling, injection site pain, and bruising, which were predominantly mild to moderate and resolved within two weeks. Severe or serious treatment-related events were rare, with only one reported across all studies. Long-term AEs, such as delayed-onset nodules or inflammatory reactions, were infrequent and mild, with no granulomas, hypersensitivity responses, or vascular complications observed. Safety outcomes were consistent across formulations and between the legacy Princess and current saypha products. Overall, the saypha HA filler portfolio demonstrates a predictable and strong safety profile within the expected range reported in the broader literature, noting the limitations of cross-study comparisons. Most AEs were related to injection trauma rather than the filler itself, supporting its continued use in clinical aesthetic practice. Full article

Objectives: This study aimed to define the learning curve required for cardiac surgery residents to acquire basic technical and interpretive skills in transit-time flow measurement (TTFM) and high-resolution epicardial ultrasonography (HRUS) during coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Methods: Prospective, observational, single-center study evaluating performance using a novel scoring system combining functional (TTFM) and anatomical (HRUS) assessment criteria. This study was registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (Identifier: NCT06589323). Nine cardiac surgery residents without prior hands-on experience in TTFM or HRUS were enrolled. Twenty-seven elective CABG patients (67 grafts) were analyzed. Each measurement was compared with those obtained by an expert benchmark surgeon (N.T.) under standardized hemodynamic conditions. Results: Residents achieved the predefined primary endpoint (combined TTFM + HRUS score/number of grafts ≥ 11) after a median of 3 cases (IQR 2–4) and 7 anastomoses (IQR 7–10). Kaplan–Meier analysis showed a progressive increase in the probability of success, with a sharp rise after the seventh anastomosis. A shorter interval between attempts (<30 days) was significantly associated with earlier achievement of the endpoint (p < 0.05). Median acquisition time for TTFM was 25 s, with <10% inter-observer variability across all flow parameters. HRUS images of adequate quality were obtained within 60 s in >90% of cases, though slightly lower success rates were observed for lateral and inferior wall targets. No resident- or procedure-related variable was independently associated with performance improvement. Conclusions: Mastery of basic TTFM and HRUS skills requires only a few cases and anastomoses, demonstrating a short and attainable learning curve. These findings challenge the perception of a steep learning process and support the routine use of intraoperative graft verification techniques in all CABG procedures. Full article

Virtual Field Trips (VFTs) have emerged as an alternative to Traditional Field Trips (TFTs), addressing logistical, financial, and accessibility constraints in geoscience education. This study presents a comparative analysis of the educational impact of a VFT and a TFT implemented with the same 10th-grade class in a Portuguese secondary school. The VFT, focused on volcanism and its socioeconomic impacts, used Google Earth to explore the island of São Miguel in the Azores. The TFT, centred on the rock cycle, was conducted at the Lavadores Beach geological site. Both interventions followed the field-based learning model by Orion and were structured around three phases: preparation, field trip (virtual or traditional), and post-activity synthesis. Data was collected through diagnostic tests, schematization, observation grids, student reports (snapshot), group projects, and written responses to a fieldwork guide recorded on Padlet during the VFT and TFT. The results showed that both VFTs and TFTs enhance conceptual understanding and student engagement, though they foster different skills: VFTs strengthen digital literacy, improve accessibility and inclusion for students with mobility or geographic constraints, allow for content revisitation, foster collaboration among students, integrate multimedia resources, and enable virtual exploration of remote locations that would otherwise be inaccessible. They also offer reduced costs, greater scheduling flexibility, and allow for individualised pacing of student learning. In contrast, TFTs provide richer sensory and practical experiences that are essential for hands-on scientific inquiry and foster stronger connections with the natural environment. The study concludes that a complementary use of both strategies offers the most inclusive and effective approach to teaching geosciences. Full article

The complexity of modern cyber–physical systems is steadily increasing as their functional scope expands and as regulations become more demanding. To cope with this complexity, organizations are adopting methodologies such as model-based systems engineering (MBSE). By creating system models, MBSE promises significant advantages such as improved traceability, consistency, and collaboration. On the other hand, the adoption of MBSE faces challenges in both the introduction and the operational use. In the introduction phase, challenges include high initial effort and steep learning curves. In the operational use phase, challenges arise from the difficulty of retrieving and reusing information stored in system models. Research on the support of MBSE through artificial intelligence (AI), especially generative AI, has so far focused mainly on easing the introduction phase, for example by using large language models (LLMs) to assist in creating system models. However, generative AI could also support the operational use phase by helping stakeholders access the information embedded in existing system models. This study introduces an LLM-based multi-agent system that applies a Graph Retrieval-Augmented Generation (GraphRAG) strategy to access and utilize information stored in MBSE system models. The system’s capabilities are demonstrated through a chatbot that answers questions about the underlying system model. This solution reduces the complexity and effort involved in retrieving system model information and improves accessibility for stakeholders who lack advanced knowledge in MBSE methodologies. The chatbot was evaluated using the architecture of a battery electric vehicle as a reference model and a set of 100 curated questions and answers. When tested across four large language models, the best-performing model achieved an accuracy of 93 percent in providing correct answers. Full article

Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most common type of cancer and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Surgery remains the most effective treatment, but new therapeutic strategies are urgently needed. The use of natural polyphenolic compounds such as curcumin (CUR) and resveratrol (RSV) has played a significant role in this effort. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current applications and molecular mechanisms of curcumin and resveratrol in gastric cancer, highlighting their therapeutic potential and translational relevance. Analytically, CUR induces apoptosis, endoplasmic stress and cell cycle arrest. On the other hand, resveratrol enhances apoptosis and reduces inflammation. Both compounds increase cancer cell sensitivity to chemotherapy and help prevent chemoresistance, highlighting their potential as molecular enhancers in anticancer therapy. Combined with standard therapeutic drugs, they represent an innovative strategy for GC treatment. By presenting these innovative approaches, this review offers a global perspective on how their administration could shape future treatment strategies. Full article

The aim of this research is to elaborate on the activities of non-formal experiential learning in agritourism developed by an organic family farm in Thessaloniki, Greece. Based on a qualitative approach, in-depth interviews with the owners of the farm and a Business Model Canvas (BMC) approach to this case study, the results indicate that workshops, seminars on nutrition, environmental conservation activities, plant identification, hands-on activities for children and cooking lessons with chefs are some of the non-formal learning tools. The aforementioned activities, on the one hand, raise gate sales for the family and, on the other hand, promote knowledge and awareness towards the contemporary environmental challenges that the rural areas and our food chain are facing. Future development strategies were also identified through the BMC, such as the adoption of digital educational tools, and ‘Do It Yourself’ kits for growing microgreens at home, while the need for official certification and support of multifunctional farms by the Ministry of Rural Development was also highlighted. Fall-compliant flooring represents a passive fall preventative approach that has emerged as an effective intervention for reducing fall-related injuries, yet its adoption remains limited due to insufficient understanding among end-users and key stakeholders. To address this knowledge gap, this perspective article provides a proof-of-concept for an interactive pedagogical tool designed to use gamification principles to improve understanding of the mechanical behavior of fall-compliant flooring. This two-part perspective article first establishes the scientific foundation through controlled ball drop experiments comparing energy dissipation between fall-compliant and standard flooring. Through video-based tracking analysis, the experiments quantified kinetic energy and force dissipation across spatial and temporal dimensions. Results revealed that fall-compliant flooring exhibits significantly superior spatiotemporal energy dissipation capabilities compared to standard flooring across both force and kinetic energy metrics. Building on these findings, the second part proposes a conceptual framework for a pedagogical tool that translates these experimental insights into an interactive learning experience that could, in future implementations, allow users to conduct hands-on ball drop activities supported by real-time scientific explanations. This approach transforms complex biomechanical concepts into accessible, engaging learning experiences. By combining experiential learning with gamified elements, this tool, termed “Fallville”, has the potential to increase fall-injury prevention awareness, deepen understanding of fall-compliant flooring mechanisms, and ultimately accelerate adoption of this proven safety intervention in healthcare and residential settings. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementias (ADRD) are neurodegenerative conditions that cause gradual deterioration of cognition, memory and language in the elderly. AD has been declared as a health priority by the World Health Organization (WHO) considering its severity and unavailability of a permanent cure. Although the global AD/ADRD population is made up of many ethno-racial groups, the majority of AD studies have focused on the Caucasian population. The few AD studies conducted on minority populations in the US have found that significant AD health disparities exist, demonstrating that African Americans and Hispanics have a significantly higher prevalence of AD and related dementias, with their risk often approaching twice that of White individuals. For the past few years, epigenomic research has played an important role in understanding health disparities among diverse racial and ethnic groups. Unlike genetic studies, which focus on the DNA sequence that one is born with, epigenomics investigates how changes in gene expression due to extrinsic environmental exposures may impact disease pathophysiology. Recent epigenomic studies appear to be promising in not only understanding disease pathology but also in developing diagnostic and therapeutic tools for AD with population specificity. However, there is only a handful of studies and review articles available addressing the epigenomic applications in irradicating racial disparities in AD/ADRD. Therefore, the aim of this review is to discuss the recent findings of epigenomic studies in AD and related dementias, their contribution in irradicating racioethnic disparities and insights into the future direction of their application in precision medicine. Background/Objectives: Although children’s playgrounds foster physical, cognitive and emotional health, sandpits can harbour antibiotic-resistant bacteria, representing a health concern for kids. Therefore, this point prevalence study investigated the presence and antimicrobial resistance of Escherichia coli in sandpits at four schools in Durban to ascertain the potential risk to schoolchildren and inform school authorities of the need to prevent such occurrences. Methods: Twenty samples were collected from schools on a single day. E. coli was isolated using colilert-18® and confirmed using PCR. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed against 19 antibiotics using the disc diffusion method and Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines. Results: E. coli was detected in 2/4 schools (50%), yielding 100 pure isolates. Of these, 71% (31 Site B and 40 Site C isolates) were resistant to at least one of the antibiotics tested, displaying 36 antibiograms. The highest resistance was to CFX (n = 40), and the lowest was to AMK and MEM (n = 1). All isolates were susceptible to CIP, CHL, GEN and TZP. At Site B, the highest resistance was against CFX (n = 16) and the lowest against AMK, CTX and NAL (n = 1). The highest resistance at Site C was against TET (n = 26), and the lowest against ATH and AUG (n = 1). Twenty isolates (20%) were multidrug-resistant, displaying resistance to at least one antibiotic from 3 classes. Conclusions: These results show that children with poor hygiene practices could get sick from playing in sandpits. Schools must change their sand regularly and ensure that sandpits are constantly exposed to the sun. Full article

Traditional surgical techniques are based on the manual application of force using mallets and osteotomes, which often result in uncontrolled impact forces, procedural inconsistencies, and patient discomfort. Magnetic mallets (MMs), magnetodynamic devices, provide a controlled application of force using electromagnetism, aiming to achieve greater precision, reduced operating time, and improved surgical outcomes. The aim of the present systematic review was to evaluate the effectiveness of MMs compared to conventional surgical techniques in oral and implant surgery. The focused question was as follows: “Do magnetic mallets improve clinical outcomes in oral and implant surgery compared to traditional instruments?” Only clinical studies comparing the use of MMs with traditional techniques in oral surgery were included. The following databases were searched up to 27 November 2025: Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science. For quality assessment, the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 (RoB 2) tool was applied for randomized controlled trials (RCTs), while the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used for non-randomized studies. Data were screened and synthesized by two reviewers. The systematic review was conducted based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement. In total, 347 studies were initially found and 6 matched the inclusion criteria and were included in the review, for a total of 282 patients. Five RCTs were included, as well as one retrospective study. The studies investigated were as follows: implant site preparation (two studies with a total of 86 patients), sinus lift and contextual implant insertion (three studies, total: 102 patients), dental extraction (two studies, total: 70 patients), and split-crest (one study with 46 patients). The outcomes suggest that MMs may serve as a potential alternative to traditional techniques, exhibiting promising although preliminary outcomes. The studies included reported a lower incidence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo with the use of MMs compared to hand osteotomes. Regarding quality assessment, RCTs raised some concerns, while the retrospective study had a moderate risk of bias. Despite the promising results, the paucity of high-quality controlled trials limits definitive conclusions on the superiority of MM over conventional techniques. Further well-designed comparative trials are needed to confirm the clinical benefits, optimize protocols across different indications, and evaluate MMs’ potential role in the management of critical bone conditions and complex surgery. Background and Objectives: Evidence on motor performance in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is scarce and inconsistent. The association of motor impairments with autism severity and intelligence remains insufficiently studied. We aimed to examine motor performance parameters in children with ASD compared with typically developing (TD) peers. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a convenience sample of 26 children with ASD, aged 4–10 years, was recruited from specialized centers in KSA, alongside 27 age- and sex-matched TD children. For the ASD group, severity (Childhood Autism Rating Scale, CARS-2) and intelligence quotient (Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scale, SB5) were extracted from medical records. CARS-2 score was utilized to categorize children with ASD into two groups (mild-to-moderate and severe groups). All study children were assessed for gross and fine motor skills using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2 (MABC-2), balance, muscle strength, endurance, and flexibility. Results: ASD groups recorded significantly lower scores in all MABC-2 component areas when compared to the TD group (p < 0.001). Aiming and catching percentile was significantly lower in the severe ASD group compared to the mild-to-moderate group (p = 0.05). Furthermore, children with ASD exhibited increased hypermobility, predominantly at the elbow joints, reduced grip strength, shorter distance in the modified 6 min walk test, and lower standing long-jump performance (p < 0.001) when compared to TD group; however, no significant difference was recorded between the ASD groups. Spearman correlation revealed that aiming and catching was negatively correlated with autism severity (CARS-2) (r = −0.38, p = 0.05) and positively with IQ (r = 0.51, p = 0.03). Aiming and catching was positively correlated with grip strength (r = 0.55, p = 0.003), endurance (r = 0.58, p = 0.002), and jump distance (r = 0.44, p = 0.03), while balance was positively correlated with grip strength (r = 0.44, p = 0.02). Conclusions: Children with ASD exhibit significant impairments in gross and fine motor performance compared with TD peers, accompanied by hypermobility, reduced strength, and diminished endurance. Notably, aiming and catching ability correlated with both IQ and autism severity as well as specific motor parameters, suggesting its potential as a clinical marker of motor–cognitive interaction in ASD. Exposure to plant protection products (pesticides) is common among agricultural workers and may represent an underrecognized cause of mucocutaneous disease. We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional survey in agricultural communities in southern Thailand (August–November 2025) to estimate the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and dermatology-specific quality-of-life impact of pesticide-attributed symptoms. Agricultural workers with pesticide use or exposure within the preceding 12 months were recruited via convenience sampling; participants provided consent and completed standardized interviewer-administered questionnaires assessing demographics, pesticide exposure history and application practices, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, self-reported cutaneous and mucosal symptoms (ocular and oral/nasal), and the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Of the 354 eligible individuals, 228 participated in the study, and 226 were included in the analyses. The median age was 54 years (interquartile range [IQR], 15), and 82.7% were male. Overall, 14.6% reported pesticide-attributed cutaneous symptoms, 5.3% reported ocular mucosal symptoms, and 0.4% reported oral/nasal mucosal symptoms. Cutaneous manifestations were predominantly symptoms occurring after exposure, with pruritic, erythematous eruptions affecting the arms and hands that typically resolved within 1–7 days after cessation of exposure. Among symptomatic participants, the median DLQI was 0.5 (IQR 3.0); however, DLQI scores were significantly higher among participants who reported pesticide-attributed cutaneous symptoms (p < 0.001) and ocular symptoms (p < 0.001). These findings suggest that pesticide-associated mucocutaneous effects are generally mild yet clinically meaningful, underscoring the need to strengthen PPE training, risk communication, and occupational health surveillance in agricultural settings. Background and Clinical Significance: Giant sphenoid wing meningiomas are generally viewed as skull base masses that compress frontal centers and their respective pathways gradually enough to cause a dysexecutive–apathetic syndrome, which can mimic primary neurodegenerative disease. The aim of this report is to illustrate how bedside phenotyping and multimodal imaging can disclose similar clinical presentations as surgically treatable network lesions. Case Presentation: An independent, right-handed older female developed an incremental, two-year decline of her ability to perform executive functions, extreme apathy, lack of instrumental functioning, and a frontal-based gait disturbance, culminating in a first generalized seizure and a newly acquired left-sided upper extremity pyramidal sign. Standardized neuropsychological evaluation revealed a predominant frontal-based dysexecutive profile with intact core language skills, similar to behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). MRI demonstrated a large, right fronto-temporo-basal extra-axial tumor attached to the sphenoid wing with homogeneous postcontrast enhancement, significant vasogenic edema within the frontal projection pathways, and a marked midline displacement of structures with an open venous pathway. With the use of a skull-base flattening pterional craniotomy with early devascularization followed by staged internal debulking, arachnoid preserving dissection, and conservative venous preservation, the surgeon accomplished a Simpson Grade I resection. Sequential improvements in the patient’s frontal “re-awakening” were demonstrated through postoperative improvements on standardized stroke, cognitive and functional assessment scales that correlated well with persistent decompression and symmetric ventricles on follow-up images. Conclusions: This case illustrates the possibility of a non-dominant sphenoid wing meningioma resulting in a pseudo-degenerative frontal syndrome and its potential for reversal if recognized as a network lesion and treated with tailored, venous-sparing skull-base surgery. Contrast-enhanced imaging and routine frontal testing in atypical “dementia” presentations may aid in identifying additional patients with potentially surgically remediable cases. Full article
