ORD-YOLO: A Ripeness Recognition Method for Citrus Fruits in Complex Environments

With its unique climate and geographical advantages, Yunnan Province in China has become one of the country’s most important citrus-growing regions. However, the dense foliage and large fruit size of citrus trees often result in significant occlusion, and the fluctuating light intensity further complicates accurate assessment of fruit maturity. To address these challenges, this study proposes an improved model based on YOLOv8, named ORD-YOLO, for citrus fruit maturity detection. To enhance the model’s robustness in complex environments, several key improvements have been introduced. First, the standard convolution operations are replaced with Omni-Dimensional Dynamic Convolution (ODConv) to improve feature extraction capabilities. Second, the feature fusion process is optimized and inference speed is increased by integrating a Re-parameterizable Generalized Feature Pyramid Network (RepGFPN). Third, the detection head is redesigned using a Dynamic Head structure that leverages dynamic attention mechanisms to enhance key feature perception. Additionally, the loss function is optimized using InnerDIoU to improve object localization accuracy. Experimental results demonstrate that the enhanced ORD-YOLO model achieves a precision of 93.83%, a recall of 91.62%, and a mean Average Precision (mAP) of 96.92%, representing improvements of 4.66%, 3.3%, and 3%, respectively, over the original YOLOv8 model. ORD-YOLO not only maintains stable and accurate citrus fruit maturity recognition under complex backgrounds, but also significantly reduces misjudgment caused by manual assessments. Furthermore, the model enables real-time, non-destructive detection. When deployed on harvesting robots, it can substantially increase picking efficiency and reduce post-maturity fruit rot due to delayed harvesting. These advancements contribute meaningfully to the quality improvement, efficiency enhancement, and digital transformation of the citrus industry. Full article

Sustainable development and the circular economy have become key challenges in the modern food sector, calling for innovative solutions that reduce waste and promote the efficient use of resources. The aim of this study was to develop a functional food product by utilizing by-products from chokeberry processing, thereby contributing to circularity in food systems. The integration of design thinking with fermentation of chokeberry pomace is presented in this study as an approach to developing value-added food ingredients. Qualitative consumer research (focus group interviews, n = 36) identified preferences and expectations regarding functional foods containing by-products. Conducted by an interdisciplinary team, the project followed five stages, involving both qualitative and quantitative research. Liquid surface fermentation was performed using Aspergillus niger, selected for its proven ability to enhance the antioxidant capacity and polyphenol content of plant matrices. The optimal process was 2-day fermentation under controlled pH conditions with glucose supplementation, which significantly enhanced the quality and nutritional value of the final product. Antioxidant activity (ABTS, FRAP, CUPRAC assays), total polyphenols, anthocyanins, and proanthocyanidins were determined, showing significant increases compared to non-fermented controls. The outcome was the development of a dried, fermented chokeberry pomace product that meets consumer expectations and fulfils sustainability goals through waste reduction and innovative reuse of fruit processing by-products. Blue mold of pome fruit, caused by Penicillium expansum, is controlled through postharvest applications of thiabendazole (TBZ), pyrimethanil (PYR), and fludioxonil (FDL). However, multi-fungicide-resistant isolates have emerged in the U.S. Pacific Northwest and their impact on decay control in long-term storage is unknown. This study evaluated the fitness of P. expansum isolates sensitive to all three postharvest fungicides (wild-types) and those resistant to TBZ (single-resistant), TBZ and PYR, or PYR and FDL (dual-resistant), and triple-resistant to the three fungicides. On nutrient-poor media, resistant isolates showed reduced conidial germination, whereas no significant differences were observed in germination, mycelial growth, or sporulation between phenotypes on nutrient-rich media at 1.5 and 20 °C. Regardless of their sensitivity phenotype, FDL-resistant isolates showed increased sensitivity to osmotic and oxidative stresses. Pathogenicity and virulence were not affected by the sensitivity phenotype on apples after six months of storage at 1.5 °C. Analysis of cumulative fitness changes indicated fitness loss under low-temperature in vitro and increased fitness under fungicide selection pressure on fruit in most resistant phenotypes. Gene expression analysis showed differential regulation of fitness-related genes, with most being up-regulated by TBZ. Overall, the results suggest that resistance in P. expansum may carry context-dependent fitness penalties, especially under high-stress conditions. Full article

Longnan is the largest olive cultivation area in China. The unique microclimates in Longnan make it an ideal testing ground for climate-resilient cultivation strategies with broader applications across similar regions, yet predictive models linking weather to oil quality remain scarce. This study establishes a climate suitability evaluation model for olive cultivation in central Longnan based on meteorological data and olive quality data in the Fotanggou planting base. Four key climatic factors are identified: cumulative sunshine hours during the fruit coloring to ripening period, average temperature during the fruit coloring to harvesting period, number of cloudy and rainy days during the harvesting period, and relative humidity during the fruit setting to fruit enlargement period. Olive oil quality is graded into three levels (Excellent III, Good II, Fair I) based on acidity, linoleic acid, and peroxide value using K-means clustering. A climate suitability index is developed by integrating these factors, with weights determined via principal component analysis. The model is validated against an olive quality report from the Dabao planting base, showing an 80% match rate. From 1991 to 2023, 87.9% of years exhibit suitable or moderately suitable conditions, with 100% of years in the past decade (2014–2023) reaching “Good” or “Excellent” levels. This model provides a scientific basis for evaluating and predicting olive oil quality, supporting sustainable olive industry development in Longnan. This model provides policymakers and farmers with actionable insights to ensure the long-term sustainability of olive industry amid climate uncertainty. Full article

Seeds of Cucurbitaceae crops represent a promising yet underexplored source of bioactive compounds with potential applications beyond nutrition, particularly in the cosmetics industry. This review examines the seeds of Citrullus lanatus (watermelon), Cucumis melo (melon), and Cucurbita pepo (pumpkin), focusing on their biochemical composition and evaluating their functional value in natural cosmetic development. Although these fruits are widely consumed, industrial processing generates substantial seed by-products that are often discarded. These seeds are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and phytochemicals, positioning them as sustainable raw materials for value-added applications. The incorporation of seed-derived extracts into cosmetic formulations offers multiple skin and hair benefits, including antioxidant activity, hydration, and support in managing conditions such as hyperpigmentation, acne, and psoriasis. They also contribute to hair care by improving oil balance, reducing frizz, and enhancing strand nourishment. However, challenges such as environmental instability and low dermal permeability of seed oils have prompted interest in nanoencapsulation technologies to improve delivery, stability, and efficacy. This review summarizes current scientific findings and highlights the potential of Cucurbitaceae seeds as innovative and sustainable ingredients for cosmetic and personal care applications. Wild edible plants, historically valued for their medicinal properties, can be a sustainable source of food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. The blue berries of Prunus spinosa L., known as blackthorns, have antioxidant, astringent, and antimicrobial benefits. To preserve these properties after harvesting, understanding the best storage methods is essential. In this study, blackthorns were preserved using different methods (air-drying, freezing, or freeze-drying) to determine the optimal procedure for preserving their antioxidant activity. The fruits were extracted using a 50:50 (V/V) mixture of ethanol and water. The different extracts were phytochemically characterized for their phenolic content and antioxidant activity. The Folin–Ciocalteu test revealed total phenolic contents of 7.97 ± 0.04, 13.99 ± 0.04, and 7.39 ± 0.08 (mg GAE/g raw material) for the three types of extracts, respectively. The total flavonoid contents were 2.42 ± 0.16, 3.14 ± 0.15, and 2.32 ± 0.03 (mg QE/g raw material), respectively. In line with the polyphenol analysis, the antioxidant activity as determined by DPPH method was higher for the frozen extract, with a value of 91.78 ± 0.80%, which was confirmed by the ROS test on keratinocytes. These results show that both air-drying and freeze-drying processes negatively impact the preservation of antioxidant activity in blackthorns, suggesting that freezing may be the best preservation method before bioactive compound extraction. This study explores the use of chlorography as a natural photographic developing technique that utilizes the decomposition of chlorophyll and other plant pigments through the action of sunlight. The developed images corresponded to previous research on changes in the iconography of the indigenous Salasaka people. In this context, this experimental project on natural photography is oriented toward the conservation of the ancestral knowledge of this community and the understanding of the native flora of Ecuador. We investigated the application of the contact image transfer technique with positive transparencies on leaves and flowers of 30 different species that grow in the Ecuadorian highlands, including leaves of vascular plants, as well as rose petals. The results showed that the clarity and contrast of chlorography depended on the plant species and exposure time. It was observed that fruit-bearing species produced more visible images than the leaves of other plants and rose petals, with species from the Passifloraceae family proving particularly effective. We interpreted these findings within the framework of plant photophysical mechanisms, proposing an inverse relationship between development efficiency and species’ non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) capacity. Furthermore, we interpreted the findings in relation to the photobleaching of pigments and compared chlorography with other natural photographic processes such as anthotypes. Key factors influencing the process were identified, such as the type of leaf, the intensity and duration of light, and the hydration of the plant material. It is concluded that chlorography is a viable, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly photographic alternative with potential applications in art, education, and research, although it presents challenges in terms of image permanence and reproducibility. The rugose surface trait in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), marked by ridges and depressions on the fruit epidermis, is linked to improved fruit texture. To investigate its regulatory basis, histological, textural, and transcriptomic differences, contrasting genotypes were analyzed. Histological analysis revealed that disorganized epidermal cell layers contribute to rugosity, with morphological differences emerging around 10 days post-anthesis (DPA). A computer-aided design (CAD)-based rugosity index (RI) was developed and showed strong correlation with sensory rugosity scores (R2 = 0.659, p < 0.001). Texture analysis demonstrated that increasing surface rugosity was associated with reduced rupture force and hardness, as well as elevated pectinase activity. Comparative transcriptome profiling identified 10 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to microtubule dynamics (e.g., CA03g18310 and CA09g13510) and phytohormone signaling (e.g., CA03g35180 and CA08g12070), which exhibited distinct spatial and temporal expression patterns. These findings suggest that coordinated cytoskeletal remodeling and hormonal regulation drive epidermal disorganization, leading to surface rugosity and altered fruit texture. The study provides novel insights into the molecular basis of fruit surface morphology and identifies promising targets for breeding high-quality pepper cultivars. Full article

This study investigated the maturity and optimal harvest interval of the ‘Kalinjot’ olive cultivar in the Vlora region. Fruit samples were collected from six randomly selected trees over nine harvest dates at 10-day intervals from September to December 2024. Physical, chemical, and instrumental analyses were conducted to evaluate parameters related to olive ripening and oil quality. Destructive methods measured the fruit diameter, fresh weight, maturity index, flesh firmness, and detachment index, while non-destructive techniques assessed the color and absorbance indices using portable Vis/NIR devices. Chemical analyses determined the fruit moisture, oil content, and total polyphenols. The results showed that the fruit diameter, fresh weight, and oil content increased with ripening, whereas the flesh firmness and detachment index decreased significantly. A negative correlation between the maturity index and color index was observed, along with strong positive correlations between the Kiwi-Meter’s IAD values, maturity index, and oil content. The optimal harvest interval was identified when olives reached up to 25.42% oil content and 1820.89 mg GAE/kg FW total polyphenols, ensuring both the technological and nutritional quality of the oil. YOLOv8n-FDE: An Efficient and Lightweight Model for Tomato Maturity Detection

To address the challenges of tomato maturity detection in natural environments—such as interference from complex backgrounds and the difficulty in distinguishing adjacent fruits with similar maturity levels—this study proposes a lightweight tomato maturity detection model, YOLOv8n-FDE. Four maturity stages are defined: mature, turning-mature, color-changing, and immature. The model incorporates a newly designed C3-FNet feature extraction and fusion module to enhance target feature representation, and integrates the DySample operator to improve adaptability under complex conditions. Furthermore, the detection head is optimized as the parameter-sharing lightweight detection head (PSLD), which boosts the accuracy of multi-scale tomato fruit feature prediction and precisely focuses on tomato color characteristics. A novel PIoUv2 loss function is also introduced to further improve localization performance and accelerate convergence. Experimental results demonstrate that the improved YOLOv8n-FDE model achieves a parameter count of 1.56 × 106, computational complexity of 4.5 GFLOPs, and a model size of 3.20 MB. The model attains an mAP@0.5 of 97.6%, representing reductions of 46%, 21%, and 60% in parameter count, computation, and size, respectively, compared to YOLOv8n, with a 1.8 percentage point increase in mAP@0.5. This study significantly reduces model complexity and improves the accuracy of tomato maturity detection, providing a more robust data foundation for subsequent orchard yield prediction. Full article

Plant genders could express different functional strategies to compensate for different reproductive costs, as females have an additional role in fruit and seed production. Secondary sexual dimorphism (SSD) expression is frequently greater under stress than under optimal growth conditions. The early gender identification in papaya may help to reduce orchard costs because the most desirable fruit shape is formed by hermaphrodite plants. We hypothesized that (a) gender ecophysiological phenotyping can be an alternative to make gender segregations in papaya seedlings, and (b) such gender segregation will be more efficient after a short drought exposure than under adequate water conditions. To test such hypotheses, seedlings of two papaya varieties (‘Candy’ and ‘THB’) were exposed to two kind of treatments: (1) water shortage (WS) for 45 h, after which they were well watered, and (2) continuously well-watered (WW). Study assessed the ecophysiological responses, such as stomatal conductance (gs), SPAD index, optical reflectance indices, morphological traits, and biomass accumulation in females (F) and hermaphrodites (H). In WS treatment, the SSD was expressed in 14 of 18 traits investigated, while in WW treatment, the SSD was expressed only in 7 of 18 traits. As tools for SSD expression, gs and simple ratio pigment index (SRPI) must be measured on the first or second day after the imposed WS was interrupted, respectively, while the other parameters must be measured after a period of four days. In some traits, the SSD was expressed in only one variety, or the response of H and F plants were of opposite values for two varieties. The choice of the clearest responses of gender segregation in WS treatment will be greenness index, combination of normalized difference vegetation index (CNDVI), photochemical reflectance index (PRI), water band index (WBI), SRPI, leaf number, leaf dry mass, and leaf mass ratio. If the WW conditions are maintained for papaya seedling production, the recommendation in gender segregation will be the analysis of CNDVI, carotenoid reflectance index 2 (CRI2), WBI, and SRPI. The non-destructive optical leaf indices segregated papaya hermaphrodites from females under both water conditions and eventually could be adjusted for wide-scale platform evaluations, with planned space arrangements of seedlings, and sensor’s set. Scaling Relationships Among the Floral Organs of Rosa chinensis var. minima: Implications for Reproductive Allocation and Floral Proportionalities

Although the allocation of biomass among floral organs reflects critical trade-offs in plant reproductive strategies, the scaling relationships governing biomass allocations remain poorly resolved, particularly in flowers. Here, we report the fresh mass scaling allocation patterns among four floral organs (i.e., sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels), and the two subtending structural components (i.e., the pedicel and receptacle) of 497 flowers of the hypogynous Rosa chinensis var. minima (miniature rose) using reduced major axis protocols. The two-parameter Weibull probability density function was also applied to characterize the distributions of floral organ mass, and revealed skewed tendencies in all six measured traits. The results show that the numerical values of the scaling exponents (α) for all pairwise power-law relationships significantly exceeded unity (α > 1), indicating disproportionate investments in larger floral structures with increasing overall flower size. Specifically, the scaling exponent of corolla fresh mass vs. calyx fresh mass was α = 1.131 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.086, 1.175), indicating that petal investment outpaces sepal investment as flower size increases. Reproductive organs also exhibited significant disproportionate investments (i.e., allometry): the collective carpel (gynoecium) fresh mass scaled allometrically with respect to the collective stamen (androecium) mass (α = 1.062, CI: 1.028, 1.098). Subtending axial structures (pedicel and receptacle) also had hyperallometric patterns, with pedicel mass scaling at α = 1.167 (CI: 1.106, 1.235) with respect to receptacle mass. Likewise, the combined fresh mass of all four foliar homologues (sepals, petals, androecium, and gynoecium) scaled disproportionately with respect to the biomass of the two subtending axial structures (α = 1.169, CI: 1.126, 1.214), indicating a prioritized resource allocation to reproductive and display organs. These findings are in accord with hypotheses positing that floral display traits, such as corolla size, primarily enhance pollen export by attracting pollinators, while maintaining fruit setting success through coordinated investment in gynoecium development. The consistent hyperallometry across all organ pairwise comparisons underscores the role of developmental integration in shaping floral architecture in Rosaceae, as predicted by scaling theory. By integrating morphometric and scaling analyses, this study proposes a tractable methodology for investigating floral resource allocation in monomorphic-flowering species and provides empirical evidence consistent with the adaptive patterns of floral traits within this ecologically and horticulturally significant lineage. Extraction and Spray Drying-Based Encapsulation of Anthocyanin Pigments from Jabuticaba Sabará Peel (Myrciaria jaboticaba (Vell.) O. Berg)

Jabuticaba (Myrciaria jaboticaba (Vell.) O. Berg) peel is a native Brazilian fruit by-product recognized for its high anthocyanin (ANC) content and strong antioxidant potential, making it a valuable natural source for food applications. This study aimed to optimize the extraction and spray drying-based encapsulation of ANCs from the peels of Sabará jabuticaba. Extraction was performed using ethanol acidified with HCl (6 M) under varying conditions of pH (1.0–3.0), temperature (14–50 °C), and solvent volume (100–250 mL). The highest anthocyanin yield (328.13 mg/100 g dry basis) was achieved at pH 1.0, 50 °C, and 250 mL solvent volume. For encapsulation, gum arabic and maltodextrin were used as wall materials at different mass ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1 w/w). The 1:2 ratio (gum arabic/maltodextrin) resulted in the highest retention of anthocyanins (315.37 mg/100 g dry basis), with encapsulation efficiency of approximately 96%, low water activity (0.27), and reduced moisture content (3.6%). These characteristics are essential for ensuring product stability during storage. The optimized anthocyanin-rich microparticles present promising potential for application as natural colorants and functional ingredients in food formulations or as antioxidant carriers in pharmaceutical products. Revised Viticulture for Low-Alcohol Wine Production: Strategies and Limitations

Interest in the wine sector focusing on no- or low-alcohol wines is growing. De-alcoholation, typically a post-fermentation process, faces restrictions in some countries and is often quite costly. Using raw materials like low-sugar grapes suitable for this purpose seems logical, yet the literature currently lacks contributions in this area. In this review paper, we outline an ideal ripening process where the goal of producing “low-sugar grapes” can be achieved through various methodologies applied at (i) the whole-canopy level (minimal pruning, hedge mechanical pruning with or without hand finishing, cane pruning combined with high bud load and no cluster thinning, applications of exogenous hormones, late irrigation, and double cropping); (ii) the canopy microclimate level, involving changes in the leaf area-to-fruit ratios (netting, apical or basal leaf removal, late shoot trimming, use of antitranspirants); and (iii) through new technologies (high-yield plots from vigor maps and the adoption of agrivoltaics). However, the efforts in this survey extend beyond merely achieving the production of low-sugar grapes in the vineyard, which is indeed primary but not exhaustive. Therefore, we also explore solutions for obtaining low-sugar grapes while simultaneously enhancing features such as lower acidity, increased phenolics, and aroma potential, which might boost consumer appreciation. The review emphasizes that (i) grapes intended for low-alcohol wine production should not be viewed as a low-quality sector but rather as an alternative endeavour, where the concept of grape quality remains firmly intact and (ii) viticulture for low sugar concentration is a primary strategy, rather than merely a support to dealcoholization techniques. Fruit flies that belong to the genus Zeugodacus (Diptera: Tephritidae) pose significant threats as invasive pests of agricultural crops in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The intensification of transboundary trade in fresh horticultural produce has increased the risk of introducing invasive species such as fruit flies, more so through the inadvertent transport of their immature developmental stages. Such immature stages of fruit flies belonging to the Tephritidae family are frequently intercepted at the international borders worldwide and are unable to be identified to the species level using morphological characteristics. Molecular identification using mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) gene has proven to be quite useful, as they are not constrained by developmental stages, sex, or colour morphs of the pest species in question. Also, real-time PCR-based species-specific assays offer quicker turnaround time since they do not require any post-PCR procedures. This study evaluated the utility of a real-time PCR assay based on the COI gene region to identify Zeugodacus cucurbitae from other Tephritid species. The developed real-time PCR assay provides a swift and precise way of discriminating between these highly invasive pest species during an interception event for rapid decision making. High specificity, having no cross-reactions with closely related Tephritids, and sensitivity of the developed assay will be extremely useful in discriminating Z. cucurbitae from other closely related fruit fly species. Z. cucurbitae-specific real-time PCR developed in this study is appropriate for organizations that carry out routine diagnostics to facilitate fresh produce imports and exports. Our assay is fully optimized for rapid deployment at international borders, offering reliable detection of the target species regardless of developmental stage, sex, or geographic origins.
